- 0:02Speaker 1: Life Audio The Bible Study Podcast, Episode nine hundred and
- 0:07Speaker 1: sixty two. Today, The Bible Study Podcast continues the study
- 0:11Speaker 1: of the Gospel of Luke with Luke twenty four. Welcome
- 0:23Speaker 1: to the Bible Study Podcast. I'm your host, Chris Christensen.
- 0:26Speaker 1: We're continuing on and wrapping up here the Gospel of
- 0:29Speaker 1: Luke with the Resurrection. But first a word from this sponsor.
- 0:35Speaker 1: Luke twenty four starts this way, Jesus has risen. On
- 0:39Speaker 1: the first day of the week, very early in the morning,
- 0:41Speaker 1: the women took the spices they had prepared and went
- 0:44Speaker 1: to the tomb. They found the stone rolled away from
- 0:46Speaker 1: the tomb, but when they entered, they did not find
- 0:49Speaker 1: the body of the Lord Jesus. While they were wondering
- 0:52Speaker 1: about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like
- 0:55Speaker 1: lightning stood beside them. In their fright. The women bowed
- 0:59Speaker 1: down with their faces to the ground. But the men
- 1:02Speaker 1: said to them, why do you look for the living
- 1:04Speaker 1: among the dead? He is not here. He has risen.
- 1:09Speaker 1: Remember how he told you while he was still with
- 1:11Speaker 1: you in Galilee, the son of Man must be delivered
- 1:14Speaker 1: over to the hands of sinners, be crucified. And on
- 1:17Speaker 1: the third day, be raised again. Then they remembered his words.
- 1:21Speaker 1: When they came back from the tomb, they told all
- 1:23Speaker 1: these things to the eleven and to the others. It
- 1:26Speaker 1: was Mary Magdalene, Joanna Marry, the mother of James, and
- 1:31Speaker 1: the others with them who told this to the apostles.
- 1:34Speaker 1: But they did not believe the women, because their words
- 1:36Speaker 1: seemed to them like nonsense. Peter, however, got up and
- 1:40Speaker 1: ran to the tomb. Bending over, he saw the strips
- 1:43Speaker 1: of linen lying by themselves, and he went away wondering
- 1:46Speaker 1: to himself what had happened. Now, Remember that in the
- 1:52Speaker 1: chapters previous, as they're heading to Jerusalem, Jesus tells them,
- 1:56Speaker 1: I think it's on three different occasions. What is going
- 1:59Speaker 1: to happen? That he he's going to die, that he's
- 2:01Speaker 1: going to rise again. But it made no sense to them,
- 2:05Speaker 1: and it still makes no sense even when the women
- 2:08Speaker 1: come back to the disciples and say that we ran
- 2:13Speaker 1: into this beings. I don't know if they use the
- 2:16Speaker 1: word angels. But these messengers, these people wearing these bright
- 2:21Speaker 1: white clothing that's gleamed like lightning, that are telling us
- 2:26Speaker 1: that Jesus isn't dead anymore. Now isn't dead anymore is
- 2:32Speaker 1: one of those strange phrases that one does not get
- 2:35Speaker 1: to say. It is not something that one normally uses
- 2:39Speaker 1: when one is dead. One tends to stay dead. I
- 2:43Speaker 1: thought it was interesting when I learned Spanish that there
- 2:46Speaker 1: are two different words for to be, something that is
- 2:49Speaker 1: temporary and something that is permanent. And oddly enough, in Spanish,
- 2:53Speaker 1: when we say that you are dead using the word
- 2:56Speaker 1: to be, you use the temporary form. And I think
- 3:00Speaker 1: that's a great statement of faith here, that the belief
- 3:04Speaker 1: in this temporariness of death. But it wasn't what these
- 3:08Speaker 1: people believed. It wasn't what Mary and Mary Magdalene and
- 3:12Speaker 1: Joanna believed. They came to the tomb on this Sunday
- 3:16Speaker 1: morning to say goodbye, to anoint Jesus's body for burial.
- 3:22Speaker 1: They didn't get a chance to do it on Friday
- 3:25Speaker 1: night because it was the Sabbath and they weren't allowed
- 3:28Speaker 1: to work on the Sabbath, and so as soon as
- 3:31Speaker 1: the sun went down they had to stop this preparation
- 3:35Speaker 1: of Jesus's body. But that is what they've come to
- 3:38Speaker 1: do here. They've come to say goodbye in the appropriate
- 3:42Speaker 1: fashion by anointing Jesus' body, but it's hard to do
- 3:47Speaker 1: when there's no body. What they weren't expecting, even though
- 3:53Speaker 1: Jesus had told them this would happen, is they weren't
- 3:56Speaker 1: expecting the tomb to be open, to have these angels
- 4:00Speaker 1: in it giving them a message. So they do what
- 4:03Speaker 1: you should do, You run back and tell everybody else,
- 4:07Speaker 1: and everybody else doesn't believe them. I always thought it's interesting.
- 4:12Speaker 1: Of course, it's the everybody else who writes down this story.
- 4:16Speaker 1: Later on, Luke goes and interviews people and creates his
- 4:21Speaker 1: understanding of the story and writes this account. And the
- 4:25Speaker 1: disciples are probably the ones who told him yeah, which
- 4:28Speaker 1: they came back and we didn't believe them. It doesn't
- 4:31Speaker 1: put them in the best light, but it's what happened.
- 4:35Speaker 1: And Peter goes and runs to the tomb and sees
- 4:39Speaker 1: the strips of lenin where there should be a body,
- 4:42Speaker 1: and he still isn't sure what's going on, continuing on
- 4:47Speaker 1: on the road to Ammeis. Now the same day two
- 4:50Speaker 1: of them were going to a village called Amais, about
- 4:54Speaker 1: seven miles from Jerusalem. They were talking with each other
- 4:57Speaker 1: about everything that had happened, As they talked and discussed
- 5:01Speaker 1: these things with each other, Jesus came up and walked
- 5:05Speaker 1: along with them, but they were kept from recognizing him.
- 5:09Speaker 1: He asked them, what are you discussing together as you
- 5:11Speaker 1: walk along? They stood still, their faces downcast. One of them,
- 5:15Speaker 1: named Cleopus, asked him, are you the only one visiting
- 5:18Speaker 1: Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened
- 5:21Speaker 1: in these days? What things? He asked about Jesus of Nazareth,
- 5:26Speaker 1: They replied, he was a prophet powerful in word, indeed
- 5:29Speaker 1: before God and all the people. The chief priests and
- 5:32Speaker 1: our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death,
- 5:35Speaker 1: and they crucified him. But we had hoped he was
- 5:38Speaker 1: the one who was going to redeem Israel. And what
- 5:41Speaker 1: is more, it is the third day since all this
- 5:44Speaker 1: took place. In addition, some of our women amazed us.
- 5:47Speaker 1: They went to the tomb early this morning, but didn't
- 5:50Speaker 1: find his body. They came and told us they had
- 5:52Speaker 1: seen a vision of angels who said he was alive.
- 5:56Speaker 1: Then some of our companions went to the tomb and
- 5:58Speaker 1: found it just as the women had said, but they
- 6:01Speaker 1: did not see Jesus. So Jesus is walking along with
- 6:06Speaker 1: these two disciples who we haven't really met before. We
- 6:10Speaker 1: don't know who the one is. His name isn't given.
- 6:12Speaker 1: The other one is Cleopus, the only time I think
- 6:14Speaker 1: Coleopus is mentioned. So relatively minor disciples in terms of
- 6:19Speaker 1: this whole story that Luke has told. But for some reason,
- 6:24Speaker 1: Jesus is walking along with them, the resurrected Jesus and
- 6:29Speaker 1: they don't recognize him. So this always gives us questions
- 6:32Speaker 1: about resurrection and are we getting a new body that
- 6:35Speaker 1: doesn't look like the old body? And why don't they
- 6:37Speaker 1: recognize Jesus And is this something supernatural that kept them
- 6:41Speaker 1: from recognizing them or did he just look different? All
- 6:45Speaker 1: of those I can't answer. But we've got this journey
- 6:49Speaker 1: that these two are going along with to this town
- 6:52Speaker 1: of Emmaeus. And as they're going along, they're talking to
- 6:55Speaker 1: Jesus and they're talking about what's happened, because Jesus is
- 6:59Speaker 1: acting as if he has no idea of this story,
- 7:02Speaker 1: and so we get to see that an understanding of
- 7:06Speaker 1: what they were thinking at the time. It's this great
- 7:10Speaker 1: little snapshot, this post this almost pre Easter vision here
- 7:16Speaker 1: or this early Easter vision here, where they're still very confused,
- 7:21Speaker 1: and they tell us what they had expected. They'd expected
- 7:23Speaker 1: him to redeem Israel. That expected him to be Messiah,
- 7:27Speaker 1: and probably Messiah in the traditional fashion of this is
- 7:31Speaker 1: going to be the one who's going to kick out
- 7:32Speaker 1: the Romans. Right, They weren't expecting him to come and
- 7:37Speaker 1: die for their sin. That wasn't the Messiah they were
- 7:40Speaker 1: looking for. And so they knew that he was powerful
- 7:45Speaker 1: in word. Indeed, before God and all the people, they
- 7:47Speaker 1: knew he was a prophet. But they their understanding of
- 7:52Speaker 1: Messiah isn't clear yet, and their understanding of his mission
- 7:56Speaker 1: was completely unclear, and it would get clarified here. And
- 8:01Speaker 1: he said to them, how foolish you are, and how
- 8:03Speaker 1: slow to believe all the prophets have spoken. Did not
- 8:06Speaker 1: the Messiah have to suffer these things and then enter
- 8:09Speaker 1: his glory? And beginning with Moses and all the prophets,
- 8:13Speaker 1: he explained to them what was said in all the
- 8:15Speaker 1: scriptures concerning himself. So he starts to re educate them
- 8:21Speaker 1: what Messiah means, and starts talking to them, probably with
- 8:26Speaker 1: those verses we know from Isaiah about a suffering servant
- 8:30Speaker 1: who comes and gives himself as a sacrifice. He probably
- 8:34Speaker 1: talks to them about sacrifice and talks to them about
- 8:37Speaker 1: the lamb of the Passover because it goes going back
- 8:41Speaker 1: with Moses and the prophets, and talks to them about
- 8:44Speaker 1: what Jesus' role really was. As they approached the village
- 8:50Speaker 1: to which they were going, Jesus continued on as if
- 8:53Speaker 1: he were to go further, but they urged him strongly
- 8:57Speaker 1: stay with us, for it is nearly evening, the day
- 8:59Speaker 1: is almost over. So he went in to stay with them.
- 9:02Speaker 1: When he was at the table with them, he took bread,
- 9:05Speaker 1: gave thanks, broke it, and began to give it to them.
- 9:08Speaker 1: Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and
- 9:11Speaker 1: he disappeared from their sight. They asked each other, were
- 9:15Speaker 1: not our hearts burning within us? While he talked with
- 9:18Speaker 1: us on the road and opened the scriptures to us.
- 9:21Speaker 1: Then they got up and returned at once to Jerusalem.
- 9:24Speaker 1: There they found the eleven and those with them assembled
- 9:27Speaker 1: together and saying, it is true the Lord has risen
- 9:30Speaker 1: and has appeared to Simon. Then the two told them
- 9:33Speaker 1: what had happened on the way and how Jesus was
- 9:36Speaker 1: recognized by them when he broke the bread. I think
- 9:41Speaker 1: It's interesting that it is the breaking of bread that
- 9:43Speaker 1: they recognized Jesus, because that is still something we use
- 9:46Speaker 1: to remember Jesus, that breaking of bread for communion or
- 9:50Speaker 1: Eucharist or whatever you call it in your church. And
- 9:54Speaker 1: we don't know if they recognized him from the feeding
- 9:57Speaker 1: of the five thousand or whether they were there at
- 9:59Speaker 1: the Last Supper. Certainly the Last Supper only depicts twelve
- 10:03Speaker 1: people there, but that doesn't mean that that is accurate.
- 10:06Speaker 1: These could have been disciples who were there in one
- 10:09Speaker 1: of those occasions. But it's in that breaking of the
- 10:12Speaker 1: bread that they realize that it's Jesus and they run
- 10:16Speaker 1: backed dru Jrusal And remember Jerusalem is still seven miles away,
- 10:20Speaker 1: so it's going to take them some hours to get
- 10:22Speaker 1: back to Jerusalem. And by the time they get there,
- 10:25Speaker 1: the word is out. It's not just the women that
- 10:29Speaker 1: Jesus has appeared to. It's not just these Cleopus and
- 10:32Speaker 1: this other disciple, but Jesus has also appeared to Peter,
- 10:35Speaker 1: and Jesus has risen and that word is still spreading.
- 10:40Speaker 1: But with that, we're going to end this episode of
- 10:42Speaker 1: the Bible Study podcast, and next week I think we're
- 10:44Speaker 1: going to wrap up this study and go on to
- 10:47Speaker 1: something else, and I am debating possibly between Exodus and Leviticus.
- 10:51Speaker 1: Let me know your thoughts, and with that we're going
