Latest / The Lunch Rush with Trent Condon / Night in MLB, Ben McCollum's son joins Iowa hoops, Tavian Banks talks about his upcoming football camps
Transcript
- 0:05Hi, good afternoon. Welcome Miller and Condon on the
- 0:09Iowa Sports Radio Network. Back to Iowa based programming
- 0:12for the next couple of hours and thank you for starting your
- 0:15afternoon with us. Is Trent Condon and myself, Ken
- 0:18Miller going to talk some sports with you for the next couple of
- 0:21hours. Here's what's coming up on our
- 0:23program. It is time for the well, it's,
- 0:25it's approaching the annual Tavian Banks TNT football camp.
- 0:30So Tavian's going to join us the bottom of our number one to give
- 0:32us a little more Intel on that event.
- 0:36It's event that's raised some good funds over the last few
- 0:39years and Tavian will be here with all the Intel on that.
- 0:42If you'd like to get involved, we'll do some Hawkeye stuff with
- 0:45Mr. Banks as well when he joins us at the bottom of our number
- 0:49one, Bill Bender, he writes for The Sporting News.
- 0:51He's pumping out a ton of content over there.
- 0:53We will talk to Bill Bender's latest today was Big 10
- 0:56scheduling. Got some coaches Intel over
- 0:59there as well. So Bill Bender will start our
- 1:02number 2 and then Mori Johns is going to be with us and we will
- 1:07discuss the camp coming up. Maury Hanks, I beg your pardon?
- 1:12Maury Hanks will join us. Talk about the Bucknell, Iowa
- 1:15game, how it came together and some of the particulars on that
- 1:19event when the tickets go on sale December 20th.
- 1:22As you know, Wells Fargo Arena for that one as Iowa.
- 1:25And Ben McCollum will bring his team to the capital city five
- 1:30days before Christmas. One of the final tune UPS before
- 1:32they head headlong into Big 10 play.
- 1:36And we're certainly not wishing football season away by any
- 1:38means. A lot of reasons to be excited
- 1:40about basketball in the state this year, I believe.
- 1:42I truly do. I think both of the Valley teams
- 1:45are going to be very good. Again, obviously we know what TJ
- 1:48Otzelberger is building and they'll try and build on over
- 1:51the last couple of years. And then Ben McCollum in year #1
- 1:55as he takes over from Fran McCaffrey as that curtain has
- 1:58closed and another one is open and away we will go.
- 2:01So kind of a quiet night. But actually it took a while to
- 2:04get going sports wise last night.
- 2:06I thought all the best games of the evening we're late when it
- 2:10comes to Major League Baseball. I tried my damnedest to get into
- 2:13the Marlins and the and the Rockies, and it was You don't
- 2:20know anybody on the teams, for starters, even as much baseball
- 2:23as you watch. It's just and hats off to the
- 2:26Rockies, I guess. But then the Reds and the
- 2:28Brewers was good. Savali, how about that one, if
- 2:31that's a name that might be available?
- 2:33All the Brewers are winning games right now.
- 2:35And another home run for Kristen Yelich is he took one deep over
- 2:38the center field wall. But the late games I thought
- 2:41were really good trend, including your Twins.
- 2:43A lot of runs scored in that one.
- 2:44No surprise game was in Sacramento.
- 2:46But Mets and Dodgers was fun and Padres and the Giants.
- 2:49Not that I stayed up till the end of all three of them, but
- 2:52got a pretty good feel for all of those.
- 2:54It was a baseball tonight. Soon we'll be back to hockey,
- 2:57soon we'll be back to basketball and certainly looking forward to
- 3:00that. One more night of baseball for
- 3:02you, yeah? And you know what, it's going to
- 3:03be good tonight because everybody plays and the Cubs are
- 3:06early. They're 5:45 for for that one as
- 3:09they head into the nation's capital and try and, you know,
- 3:12maintain their place at the top of the heat.
- 3:15But it's kind of a point that, you know, you're into the month
- 3:18of June now and we're approaching, you know, by the
- 3:20middle of the week, most teams will have about 100 or fewer
- 3:23than 100 games left. And starting to get on that,
- 3:27start to move toward that buyer seller.
- 3:29When there's some, when you're looking at some of these teams,
- 3:32are they going enough to be, you know, to think they're a playoff
- 3:34contender? Might you be looking at their
- 3:36roster and finding out who might be available to help your
- 3:39rosters? Major League Baseball general
- 3:42managers start to go down those paths.
- 3:45So I got into the Twins game late, got into everything late
- 3:48because had a weird night last night.
- 3:50It's a softball practice, of course, because it's a night.
- 3:52So you know what? Softball practice, that's how it
- 3:54begins. Right.
- 3:55School's out. Yep.
- 3:56School's out for the kids over in West Des Moines, so they're
- 3:58done practice. Then Ella had a sleepover with
- 4:02her friend who's a day older than her.
- 4:03Today's Ella's birthday. Yesterday was her, so they had a
- 4:06sleepover, dropped her off there.
- 4:07And then Jack was over at Valley Softball Baseball Complex as he
- 4:12got to be on the field for the national anthem before the
- 4:15varsity gave. And it was very easy to spot #2
- 4:17Jack Condon, because he's a head shorter than everybody else.
- 4:19Yeah. He's hopefully that growth spurt
- 4:22will come. Oh yeah, we need to be
- 4:23stretching him out a little bit. But he won a baseball bat, a
- 4:26mini bat for the shortstop for Valley.
- 4:28So he was very excited about that.
- 4:31And it was the first time. So I got there.
- 4:32It was, I mean, middle of the game.
- 4:34I'd never watched a Valley sporting event, probably a high
- 4:37school event since I've been here, that I wasn't
- 4:39broadcasting. Oh my.
- 4:41Sure, Yeah. So it was weird, but the
- 4:45softball field and the baseball field are right next to each
- 4:47other and if you go out to basically center field of the
- 4:50softball diamond and it's up the right field line a baseball, you
- 4:53can watch both games and there were a ton of.
- 4:55People, there's a little space there.
- 4:56Yeah, a huge area out there. Jack was running around and
- 4:59playing with kids and and yeah, watching both games, bouncing
- 5:02back and forth. But it was just, it was so odd
- 5:04for me because I can't remember the last time I went to a high
- 5:07school event. It wasn't broadcasting that it
- 5:09wasn't watching. It would be a weird feeling.
- 5:12Yeah, it definitely was, but a fun night of the ballpark.
- 5:14Got back and right in time as we were playing some board games,
- 5:18Flip on the Twins game and see a six run second ending out of
- 5:21them. So.
- 5:21Yeah, and then it got a little dicey.
- 5:22There for a while did. Ryan, to his credit, was able.
- 5:25They had bases loaded, nobody out, and was able to wriggle off
- 5:28the hook. And then the bats got going
- 5:30again. Twins are good, Trent.
- 5:31Twins are gonna be a factor. Twins are gonna be a factor.
- 5:34If you had the bet yay or nay on playoffs right now, I think
- 5:37you'd probably be leaning toward the yay.
- 5:39But it's gonna be fascinating coming down the stretch.
- 5:42Obviously a lot of baseball would be played, thankfully, but
- 5:45and that division as well. I'm anxious to see the Royals
- 5:47tonight. I don't want to watch Caglio and
- 5:49see if he does any damage in his first.
- 5:51Major, you've been excited about this.
- 5:52Why? It's just, it's, it's like every
- 5:54time, you know, you see a Royals farm clip on Twitter and it must
- 5:58have gone down that rabbit hole and now they're always.
- 6:00Shooting, he clicked. It and it's just AI mean a he's
- 6:04built like Adonis. I mean, he's just and, and can
- 6:09just clobber the baseball. Going to be fun to watch.
- 6:12So I like that division. It's it's it's everybody's
- 6:16chasing the Tigers. Obviously at this point.
- 6:19Will they come back to the pack? Not so sure.
- 6:21Is it time to start? Who do you believe more in the
- 6:26two leaders of the central divisions believe.
- 6:28More in the Cubs, you believe. More in the Tigers believe.
- 6:30In. As a team that can legitimately
- 6:33win their league, win their league, that would be the Tigers
- 6:36because of the lack of competition.
- 6:38Right, that's exactly what it is.
- 6:40Who's the better team? I think we have a real
- 6:43conversation Who has a better chance of winning the Pennant.
- 6:45Well, the best pitcher plays for the Tigers.
- 6:47Yes, the huge advantage and the offense.
- 6:50I mean, the Tigers got some dudes, but the Cubs got some a
- 6:53lot of dudes seemingly at this point.
- 6:56The Cubs have scored 341 runs this year.
- 6:59The Tigers have scored three O 9 advantage Cubs.
- 7:03They have given up the Tigers to 11, 2:44 On the other side,
- 7:08differential, run differential plus 97 for the Cubs plus 98 for
- 7:12the Tigers. We're kind of splitting, but
- 7:14it's the difference. The NLA has the Dodgers, and by
- 7:17the way, the Phillies and the Mets are going to be there.
- 7:20And maybe you're going to have that Braves team that's talented
- 7:23just as I put it together and the Padres and whoever else.
- 7:26Hired Freddie Gonzalez, their former skippers back on that
- 7:28staff. The Tigers need to get past.
- 7:31Whom? Well, the Yanks.
- 7:34There's one. And now the Yankees closer Luke
- 7:37Weaver's out for what? Yes, two months.
- 7:39They said 6 to 8 weeks I think is what passed and at least no,
- 7:43that's what it was the last time he had this kind of injury.
- 7:46So a month and a half, maybe All Star break, some point comes
- 7:49back after that. But we push up to blow trade
- 7:52deadline, yeah. That's true and.
- 7:56If it's on the back end of that, that very well could be August
- 7:58before Weaver's back out there. Our is is the team that maybe we
- 8:01should be taking a look at the Astros.
- 8:04I think we both we both swung and missed on the Rangers.
- 8:09They're only a couple of games below 500, but they just at this
- 8:12point don't look and they got a lot of baseball left.
- 8:14I get it. Because Alvarez is going to be
- 8:17back soon. He had the hand injury.
- 8:20He was coming back off of it and they said that he just felt
- 8:26uncomfortable. It wasn't bad pain.
- 8:27So they did another MRI. There's a fracture in there.
- 8:31So the good news was the reason they didn't see it the first
- 8:34MRI, there's too much inflammation in there and that's
- 8:37why they didn't see the fracture the first time.
- 8:39It doesn't seem like it's anything that's going to be
- 8:41longer term. Know that this is 2 months or
- 8:43anything like that, but probably another 3-4 weeks for Alvarez.
- 8:46What they get. We know what he can be.
- 8:47He's a bopper. Yeah, absolutely.
- 8:49The rotation, we are both Valdez guys.
- 8:52Yeah, and I like Hunter. Brown absolutely.
- 8:55Blanco, inconsistent, but you know, if he's your number four
- 8:58in a playoff team, you're feeling fine with that.
- 9:00Do they go out and get another arm?
- 9:02Probably gonna shop for one. Absolutely.
- 9:04That's gonna be another team that the Cubs are gonna have to
- 9:06contend with. Speaking of the Cubs and the and
- 9:08the Astros, look what Isaac Parade is just doing.
- 9:10He's having a nice year over there.
- 9:13Finding the right spot. Yeah, Cam Smith, nice story, but
- 9:16it's brought to brought you Kyle Tucker, so you don't feel too
- 9:18bad about that. That trade looks as though, I
- 9:20mean, Cam Smith's obviously got his whole career in front of
- 9:22him. Whether or not Kyle Tucker stays
- 9:24with the Cubs, obviously he's going to determine the winner of
- 9:27that trade anymore on Tucker. Is there a chance he plays
- 9:31tonight? Don't know, hadn't seen anything
- 9:33defending I. Think it's kind of 5050 at this
- 9:35point, whether he goes or not. So down the month into the month
- 9:41of June, we go and we'll see who's going to be buyers and
- 9:43sellers. So a couple of other things I
- 9:45want to bring up. I want to get to this DraftKings
- 9:47story at some point because it's got local ties.
- 9:51But heading into the weekend, I think it was Friday, I don't
- 9:55think we talked about them. And I know we've spoken about
- 9:58them before because you've mentioned Ben Mccullum's son
- 10:00when you covered some of his games at Waukee North or
- 10:04Northwest. Northwest Gotcha.
- 10:08And he's going to be a Hawkeye. He's.
- 10:09Going to be a Hawkeye. And this came out Friday night.
- 10:11Friday late afternoon. Late afternoon.
- 10:14Your Standard Time for a news dump.
- 10:16Is that what this is? I think so, and I think so for a
- 10:20couple of different reasons. Now I want to start the
- 10:22conversation with this. I'm not a scout, I'm not
- 10:24somebody, but I watch a lot of high school basketball, talk to
- 10:27a lot of people involved in high school sports, and Pete McComb
- 10:33is not a Big 10 basketball player.
- 10:35So that was going to be my question if his name was Pete
- 10:37Johnson. No, he's not coming.
- 10:39Yeah. So you start that, which in
- 10:42general is not a big deal. Tom Izzo, his kid, yeah, he
- 10:46wouldn't. He would have been able to play
- 10:48at Central Michigan. He would have been able to play
- 10:49at D3. Hoyberg's kid.
- 10:51When he first got to Nebraska, he made himself a decent player.
- 10:54And we saw how awful that was last year in the vitriol that
- 10:56was there. Because he shouldn't have been
- 10:58playing 20 minutes a game, right?
- 10:59Either should recruit better or he shouldn't be out there that
- 11:01much. That's a Fred Hoiberg problem.
- 11:03Yeah, but the biggest component to.
- 11:06All of it bring up Lick. Well and right, because that is
- 11:09a component here. What happened with Lick later?
- 11:12What happened with the Mccaffrey's?
- 11:13Both the McCaffrey boys were good enough to earn big.
- 11:16These were both top 150 for sure.
- 11:18They were both, especially Patrick, and it's a different
- 11:21conversation and their careers didn't go the way that you
- 11:23wanted. Connor McCaffrey, My favorite
- 11:27Hawkeye of all time. Basketball player not for his
- 11:30skills. I would have to disagree with
- 11:32you for a myriad of different reasons.
- 11:33Because of that, just just just for, you know, is the
- 11:36intangibles. But anyways, yeah, go ahead.
- 11:39Those guys, though, we're deserving, yes.
- 11:41And that's not the case here. We're also coming off an era
- 11:45where nepotism at the University of Iowa is an ugly word.
- 11:49Never thought about it in that respect, but yes, you're right.
- 11:52With what we had. This was deeper in basketball.
- 11:54Yes, absolutely. When you talk about Bryan
- 11:55Ferrets and the way that things went there, if this was a one
- 11:59off a guy in his first year of the job at University X, this is
- 12:03not a big deal. But it is deeper than that.
- 12:06The fan base has this negative connotation with kids of coaches
- 12:11and what has happened over the last two decades.
- 12:13And because of that, I think this is the first major swing
- 12:17and a miss from Ben McCollum. You got to read the room and he
- 12:20didn't read the room here. I don't think he read the
- 12:22university, the athletic department, the basketball
- 12:25program. He didn't read this correctly.
- 12:27When he brought he a body. He is he's and if he plays,
- 12:31we're running into Licklider tear.
- 12:33Yeah, he's better. John Licklider was the six best
- 12:35team player on a City High team that was like barely over 500.
- 12:38Peyton McCollum is a lot better basketball player than him, so
- 12:42that's another part to put out there.
- 12:43However, if Peyton Mccollum's out there running the point,
- 12:47we're running right back down to the same Rd.
- 12:49The negativity that has hurt this athletic program at the
- 12:53University of Iowa. I don't think the juice is worth
- 12:56the squeeze. Here is it.
- 12:57Is it simply a matter of you had a roster spot that was going to
- 13:01remain open and you need bodies? Yeah.
- 13:05I mean, you can absolutely come up with that.
- 13:07The other component that is weird as we await the house case
- 13:11and the way this is going to be, people talking about, well, he's
- 13:14a walk on how they divvy up scholarship money, how they
- 13:17divvy up things is going to look completely different.
- 13:19Basically, I don't think there's going to be walk ONS in
- 13:22basketball. Wait, he's going to be on full?
- 13:23Ride well. You have 15 scholarships for
- 13:26basketball. The way that I understand it,
- 13:27you have 15 scholarships. Everybody is a scholarship
- 13:31athlete. That's part of why they're
- 13:33getting sued all over the place is everybody.
- 13:36And that's why we're seeing the roster caps in football
- 13:38scholarships of 85. We're going to have room for
- 13:40new. Walk ONS were gone in football.
- 13:42But basketball is a different component.
- 13:43And I don't, I don't know because we don't know exactly
- 13:47how it's going to be. But my understanding is the
- 13:50thought is going to be the way this is going to turn out is
- 13:53there's going to be 15 spots. All of them will be.
- 13:55Now, can you get the NIL benefits?
- 13:57That's something that they can take away.
- 13:58That's something that doesn't have to be a part of it.
- 14:01So let me ask this about having your son on the team when it
- 14:04comes to the trust factor amongst your teammates.
- 14:07Yes, right. When the coaching staff is not
- 14:09in there and you wanna, well, whatever, yeah, you know, you
- 14:13wanna RIP on the head coach. Absolutely.
- 14:17And there's junior sitting over there.
- 14:20I mean, that that's gotta be tough, right?
- 14:22You're are you you had a bad. Practice and you wanna vent,
- 14:25right? But there's the coach's kid.
- 14:26And and and why is he picking on me?
- 14:28Right, right. Yeah, and the coach, that's
- 14:32awkward, Trent. That's a really there's a fine
- 14:35line and I'm not sure the juice is worth the squeeze to sell to
- 14:37seal your line. I know you didn't come up with
- 14:39it, but you just used it. I used it, yeah.
- 14:41I I think there's so many layers to this story.
- 14:45Again, big picture, it doesn't matter.
- 14:47So this is a walk on spot that wasn't going to be filled,
- 14:49right? It's a spot that they can go up
- 14:51to 15. It's not that big of a deal, but
- 14:53there's so many live. Friday.
- 14:55You know what, right, this, this just kind of exacerbates it a
- 14:59little bit. If they're so proud of it, put
- 15:00it out Thursday morning, right, or whatever.
- 15:03Not Friday in the afternoon, because we're accustomed to, you
- 15:06know, these type of stories. That's when they hit.
- 15:09Everybody's going into the weekend.
- 15:10By the time Monday rolls around, you know it's old news.
- 15:13And we didn't even get to it. Right.
- 15:14We didn't touch it. We didn't touch it yesterday.
- 15:16The release came out at 2:33 on Friday afternoon, middle of the
- 15:20afternoon a little. Better than 430, but.
- 15:22Better. Yeah, better.
- 15:23But still, it's. Yeah, I can see.
- 15:28I kind of see it. No, it's not good.
- 15:31It's not a good look. I I got to.
- 15:33I got to go down. I got to see it your way, Trent.
- 15:35It's not a good look. Sure.
- 15:37They need bodies. I get that.
- 15:42Yeah. And it's like you say, if it
- 15:44was, if his last name was Dankle Witch, he's not on the roster.
- 15:49Jim wants to change the subject. Jim, welcome to the program.
- 15:52How are you? What is on your mind?
- 15:54Well, not really change the subject, but I might be wrong,
- 15:57Trent. I think men's basketball is 13
- 15:59and women's is 15, but I could be wrong on that.
- 16:02I think that's changing though with the when the house case is
- 16:04settled, I believe men's basketball goes to 15.
- 16:07Yep. OK.
- 16:08So 15 roster. You're the hockey.
- 16:10You're my hockey guru. OK, Never put a pair of skates
- 16:13on in my life, but I love to watch the final.
- 16:16It's not the finals. No, you're right.
- 16:18How is Edmonton favored? I don't get it either.
- 16:21I look I. Just because they got four home
- 16:24games, but I. Guess that I guess that must
- 16:27factor into it. I think there's the the, the
- 16:30taste from last year that they were so close.
- 16:33They've gotten better, but I I don't think any team improved
- 16:36more so than than Florida at the trade deadline.
- 16:39I mean, Brad Marshawn bringing the captain of the Boston
- 16:42Bruins. A you know what agitator, A
- 16:44disturber. I mean, this guy is, if you
- 16:46watch him play, he had so much to that team.
- 16:49Seth Jones on the back end, they have a huge edge in goaltending.
- 16:53I mean a massive edge. And I got a Stewart Skinner
- 16:56ticket of 301. So I'm hoping I'm wrong, but but
- 17:00but Brodsky's just night and day better.
- 17:02I'm with you. I don't understand it, Jim.
- 17:05I have not invested anymore in Edmonton.
- 17:07Every ticket I've bought in the last three weeks has the Florida
- 17:10Panthers to win the couple. My Co worker calls Marshawn, got
- 17:15a little red ass in him. Yeah, they.
- 17:17I can say that on the no, you can.
- 17:18You know what his nickname is. He was called the his nickname
- 17:20is the little ball of hate and he is the little ball of hate.
- 17:25But what a player. OK, I wasn't, I wasn't crazy
- 17:28when I went and went, wait a minute, Edmondson's favorite.
- 17:30Yeah, I was stunned as well. I'm I was stunned as well.
- 17:33Jim, enjoyed the series, man. Thank you.
- 17:35Thanks. Yep.
- 17:36Good to talk to you. It is the final, not the finals.
- 17:39Oh, the Stanley Cup Final. But it's kind of rolls off your
- 17:43tongue. Joe Donald's going to join us
- 17:44tomorrow is the voice of the Minnesota Wild.
- 17:46He will join us to talk about the Stanley Cup at 1:30 tomorrow
- 17:50after Cappy and we'll. Preview the NBA Finals with the
- 17:53GM with a local tie as Chad Buchanan is going to join us on
- 17:57Thursday. Could get has media availability
- 17:59on Wednesday, but he's going to join us Thursday at 1:00 today.
- 18:02Game 1A, local guy, Valley grad, Simpson grad.
- 18:06He's part of that Simpson group of hoopsters from back in the
- 18:0990s. And you look at that road from
- 18:11going from Simpson College to NBAGM, building the team that is
- 18:17now playing in the finals. It truly is what what a what a
- 18:20story, what a run. And they are a massive underdog
- 18:24in this thing. They really are.
- 18:26I mean, can you recall the last time that they that we had this
- 18:31significant, would it have been the Bulls?
- 18:33No, the one that came to my mind was the 76ers, Lakers.
- 18:37When Shaq was with the Lakers, it was Kobe coming into an
- 18:39existence with Iverson. Iverson.
- 18:42And then? They won game one stole.
- 18:43Game one, Dikembe was the center and there was not a whole lot, a
- 18:47lot else on that TV. They stole game one of that one
- 18:50and that got swept out. I want to say that one in the
- 18:53top of the head kind of thinking, I want to say the
- 18:55Sixers are like 567 to 1, something like that going into
- 18:59the series. But there's also what the
- 19:03Pistons, Lakers that was, but that wasn't anything close.
- 19:05To I wouldn't think so. This is this is this is as big
- 19:09of a price as we've seen in a long time.
- 19:11All right, I want to get into this DraftKings story because it
- 19:13kind of fascinates me. There's a local tie to it and
- 19:17we'll get Trenton here obviously involved in this because I'm
- 19:20anxious to pick his brain as to does this guy have a lake to
- 19:23stand on or do you side with with DraftKings when it comes to
- 19:29this? You accepted the bet I want.
- 19:33I want to do that. Let's get Mike and Waterloo
- 19:35first of all, and then we'll get into this DraftKings story.
- 19:38Mike, what's on your mind, Mike? Hey guys, how you doing?
- 19:41Why didn't you take a picture of our butt with our buddy?
- 19:45You guys were in the same place at a wedding couple of weeks ago
- 19:49when he tried to take a picture of you and he wouldn't.
- 19:51You wouldn't do it. Because he was going to send it
- 19:54to you. I did, You hear me?
- 19:55I finally got to go to a White Sox game.
- 19:57I was telling Sean that. Never mind that I want to know
- 20:00about the wedding. Why wouldn't you take a picture?
- 20:03I tell you, all kinds of booze and it was, it was an expensive
- 20:06wedding. I don't drink anymore, but yeah,
- 20:08it was quite a wedding. We just wanted to see what you
- 20:10look like, Mike. Oh well.
- 20:14I want to put a face with the boys.
- 20:15Guy, that guy. Yes, we know him very well,
- 20:17Whipper. Whipper yeah, yeah, he was
- 20:20talking about you, Kenny. See, I was going to go ahead.
- 20:24I heard Iowa State sold 10,000 tickets to Ireland.
- 20:27The Ireland. They're doing very well.
- 20:30They're doing very well, yes. And one more.
- 20:32Thing I think they're spending their money there 'cause they
- 20:34realize there's not going to be a bull trip this.
- 20:36Year No. There you go again.
- 20:39Hey, one more thing about nepotism.
- 20:41Yeah, I'm completely against it. Why do these coaches hire their
- 20:46kids? You know, Powers got his kid on
- 20:48the basketball staff. The women's basketball team got
- 20:53Finley's got his son on the staff, you know, go out and get
- 20:57a job. And another thing, when you,
- 20:59when you recruit your son to play for you, opposing coach can
- 21:04use that against you because you, you can say, hey, if you 2
- 21:08are even, you know, who's going to get to play the son's kid.
- 21:12So I completely I, I think they should put rules in there.
- 21:16What do you guys say? It's slippery slope.
- 21:19Mike, thanks for the call. I appreciate it.
- 21:21Glad you had fun at the wedding. I'm just kidding about your
- 21:23squad, by the way. You know that.
- 21:25Yeah, it's. You put in those kind of yeah,
- 21:28and then you have a great player that comes through and sorry,
- 21:31can't play at your university. You certainly don't want to do
- 21:33that. It's it's that fine line.
- 21:36And that's why I think it's a good topic for us here.
- 21:38Yeah, certainly in the month of June.
- 21:40No Perfect for June. It's because.
- 21:42Never seen a light day in September, October.
- 21:43No, absolutely not. We got games to talk about.
- 21:45But as we build into that, yeah, it's something intriguing.
- 21:48But this is not just a University of Iowa problem.
- 21:50No, no, no, no, no, everywhere. I and it's a lot of places.
- 21:53Is that just a state of Iowa thing even right?
- 21:55It's just we're close to it and we see it a lot.
- 21:57More Yeah. And and like you said, I it was
- 22:00a Friday afternoon by the time and, you know, it's the summer,
- 22:04everybody's getting the hell out of the office.
- 22:06All right, this DraftKings story, it's it's a it's a couple
- 22:09of probably a week old now that it made the register.
- 22:12So what we're talking about, this guy is a DraftKings
- 22:15customer. And there was an event, a golf
- 22:17tournament that took place in California in 2024, the Pebble
- 22:24Beach Pro Am tournament 2024. And after 54 holes it the
- 22:31weather forecast called for torrential rains.
- 22:36And this was there was very, very little likelihood that the
- 22:40final round was going to be played.
- 22:43So this guy, along with a number of other betters, opened up
- 22:48their DraftKings app in this case and realized that they
- 22:53could still make wagers on tomorrow's round.
- 22:59So thinking that tomorrow's DraftKings is under the
- 23:02impression of things are going to change tomorrow, these
- 23:04results aren't final after 54 holes.
- 23:08So these guys start playing and they start making so and so's
- 23:13going to win it. And they go, this guy's going to
- 23:15be second, this guy's going to be third, and they're parlaying
- 23:17all of these tickets. This guy ended up winning
- 23:20because the final round was cancelled.
- 23:22So he had the standings after 54 holes after Saturday, and he's
- 23:27home free. DraftKings took his bets.
- 23:31They accepted them. They accepted their bets.
- 23:33Mm Hmm. He stands to collect $14.2
- 23:38million based on the fact that a He was bet betting on sports,
- 23:43but betting on sports with the thought in the back of his mind
- 23:47that California is about to be hit with rains like they haven't
- 23:51seen in decades. The final round gets cancelled.
- 23:55The golf tournament is ruled to be official after 54 holes.
- 24:00Play is cut short, Draftking says you know what?
- 24:03No, no, no, no, no. We want to refund your bets.
- 24:06We're not paying you the $14 million.
- 24:09Who's right? Who's wrong?
- 24:11The beginning of it, I was absolutely shocked that the
- 24:14verbiage was not in there. We talked about house rules.
- 24:16How many times? Reach your help.
- 24:18Yes, read your house rules. We will say it again in August
- 24:20before football season begins. We will talk about that because
- 24:23if you are a sports bettor, that is a huge component.
- 24:26Know where you're shopping. We talked about shopping around
- 24:28but also know those rules of where you're shopping.
- 24:30How DraftKings, one of the big two in the sports betting
- 24:33industry. Count this open.
- 24:35How they did not have their rules that now state this is
- 24:37what it says now, not then. Now in the event there is a
- 24:41reduction in scheduled round bets played, bets placed in any
- 24:45market will be void and it continues on from there.
- 24:48But it wasn't at that time. Pay up.
- 24:51Pay up. This guy had one through 20
- 24:53perfectly because he had standings in front of him.
- 24:56Absolutely. He's betting $50.00 to win
- 24:59millions of dollars. His first $100 ticket brought
- 25:03him back $4.6 million on a parlay.
- 25:07He bet $50. He cut it in half.
- 25:09Next time DraftKings takes the money, the tournament's
- 25:12cancelled. He's got one through 20 perfect
- 25:15on his ticket. He's going to win this lawsuit.
- 25:17Do. You think so?
- 25:18I do. Why didn't DraftKings settle
- 25:21big? Corporations, I just always
- 25:22believe are eventually going to win.
- 25:24That's kind of where my my doing.
- 25:25Where the attorney is guy by the name of Ben Lynch.
- 25:30Lynch is one of them. There was also Kaplan I think
- 25:32was the last name of another one of his.
- 25:33So Kaplan's a law firm that I recognize.
- 25:36I'm not killing Ben Lynch here, but it sounds like I am.
- 25:38Does he have the right guy? I mean, has Ben Lynch ever
- 25:40litigated a case like this before?
- 25:42It's going to be a big one, isn't it?
- 25:43Yeah. And DraftKings be dealing with
- 25:46well, do you? Remember when we were, you know,
- 25:48the when that we started to realize the wave that Caitlin
- 25:51Clark was about to, you know, was about to ride and we're
- 25:54thinking, oh, God, I hope the family doesn't have somebody in
- 25:56Valley Junction looking after her, you know, outside
- 26:00opportunities. And turned out they didn't.
- 26:02But I'm just wondering that I hope they get the right firm
- 26:06friend I I I don't think DraftKings has a leg to stand.
- 26:08On you don't think so. I don't, I think they're they
- 26:11changed the rules after the fact.
- 26:13They accepted the bets. Yes.
- 26:16And now they're going to come back and say no, no, no.
- 26:18On the surface, yes, you're absolutely right and I agree
- 26:21that's the way it should be. I just don't have a whole lot of
- 26:24belief in our legal. System this gets settled perhaps
- 26:27I mean if you if it's you that's got this ticket and they.
- 26:31Want to settle for a couple mil? Well, I would hold up for more
- 26:34than that. I give me half, Half.
- 26:37Give me half and I'll go away. I'll.
- 26:39Give you a 10%. No, we're going to keep going.
- 26:42See, in court, I got a lot more money, a lot more lawyers than
- 26:45you do. Yeah, but I think I got, I think
- 26:48I've got the the actual case law on my side.
- 26:53They took the bets. They took the bets.
- 26:54A bet. And you you have the argument I
- 26:57mean. I completely agree with you and.
- 26:58Especially if I'm in a front in front of a jury.
- 27:01Of how many in a jury, 10 or 12? Sure, right.
- 27:04Luckily I've not had to be there, right?
- 27:06But but I think that the jury and if it is a jury trial,
- 27:10that's certainly what I would be asking for.
- 27:12I'm not sure who gets the choose that.
- 27:13Is it the lawsuit filer or is the lawsuit defendant?
- 27:19Whoever gets to decide if it's if it's the guy himself.
- 27:23You want this in front of 12 of your peers because you want to
- 27:27take down corporate, this big corporate giant.
- 27:30And look, DraftKings, it's very good to Trent.
- 27:32Now we, we speak on their behalf.
- 27:33I make more of my wagers at DraftKings than any other place.
- 27:36Truth is, truth is disclosed. Bam bam.
- 27:44I hope the guy gets his money. You know what?
- 27:47What's that? Ben Klein, guy would come on,
- 27:50attorney and Clive, maybe. You know, I'm going to try.
- 27:53I'm going to reach out to him, see if he would.
- 27:55I'm fascinated by this story, fascinated by it.
- 27:58Pay the man. We'll take a time out.
- 28:00Miller and Condon. Tavian Banks is going to join
- 28:03us. In fact, he already has, sitting
- 28:04right across from me. We're going to talk about what's
- 28:06coming up. His camp, his annual camp.
- 28:08We'll do that when we come back. That is football season.
- 28:12This is one of those boxes. You check right, Trent?
- 28:14Yes, yeah, another. One another boxes when Banks
- 28:17gets under way that no, that means we're getting close to it.
- 28:21Miller and Condon were under way on a Tuesday.
- 28:24It's the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 28:29Hi, I'm Mallory Condon. Welcome back, Iowa Sports Radio
- 28:31Network. We're with you until 2O clock.
- 28:33Bill Bender kicks off the second hour of the program.
- 28:36College football conversation with our buddy from THE Sporting
- 28:39News. He is Bill Bender.
- 28:41Well, as we said going into the break, one of the kind of boxes
- 28:44we check as we make our way back to football season is Tavian
- 28:47Banks. Tim Dwight.
- 28:48They get together, put on these camps, various locations
- 28:52throughout the state of Iowa. It is drawing closer yet again.
- 28:55We're into June and it's coming up.
- 28:57Tavian Banks. Good to see you, Davian.
- 28:59How are you? I'm awesome, how are you?
- 29:01Doing well. So I guess let's go back before
- 29:03we go forward. This is your what for this and I
- 29:06know that last year when we had you in you were continues to
- 29:10grow and I'm guessing last year was no different.
- 29:12Right. Gosh, when, when did we do our
- 29:14first camp Friday like 2017 or 2016?
- 29:19I'm going to say Trent. And I were down there or up the
- 29:21dial rather on the FM band when we met you doing that for the
- 29:24first time. So.
- 29:25So it's been a while. So how many, how many kids will
- 29:29you get at your Des Moines camp, which takes place in in Lincoln?
- 29:33Right, Lincoln this year. So I mean, we get anywhere from
- 29:37350 to 400 kids that that come and participate in it.
- 29:41So it's really, really great numbers.
- 29:44Again, it's free camp. We have we have kids that you
- 29:47know, never played football before and there's the first
- 29:49time coming out. And we also have veteran, you
- 29:52know, kids that also come out that that been playing for a
- 29:55little while and stuff too. So.
- 29:56I, I would love to know the kids that have never come, never
- 29:59played football before, have some of them, you know, caught
- 30:02on to the sport and the sport taking a hold of them and they
- 30:05continue to play. Yeah, when I say that, I mean
- 30:07like it's, you know, athletic kids that, you know, they they
- 30:11played flag football maybe or, or those type of things.
- 30:14So they've had some form probably of playing and stuff,
- 30:17but it's just a good time, you know, like to be honest with
- 30:20you. And we, we teach a lot of skill
- 30:22development too at the same time.
- 30:24So, you know, if anybody just wants to come out and join,
- 30:28it's, it's just a great atmosphere and it's just a great
- 30:30time for the kids to have. TNT Football camp, you can find
- 30:33it also part of the Iowa Foundation.
- 30:35A website is where people can get registered.
- 30:37So Iowa City, Des Moines and Newton, the three locations, the
- 30:42Des Moines one is the free one, but the other two are not real
- 30:45expensive. I mean, to get coaching from
- 30:47Tavia Banks, from Tim Dwight and all the other guys that you
- 30:49have, that's pretty incredible deal there for the people over
- 30:52in Newton and Iowa City to take. 25 bucks.
- 30:54Yes, for Newton and Iowa City. Right.
- 30:57Yeah, which is really reasonable, no doubt about that.
- 30:59Absolutely. So what, what give us a day?
- 31:02What? What will the day be like?
- 31:03What time does it start and kind of take us through a day of
- 31:06camp? So this year, the one that's in
- 31:09thinking in Des Moines here we have a 12 to 12.
- 31:13I mean, sorry, 12 it's 8:00 to 12:00.
- 31:16Before in the past we used to have an all day camp, but we, we
- 31:20condensed it down a little bit this year just for, for Des
- 31:22Moines camp. So 8 to 12.
- 31:24We got registrations that start, I think, I believe they start at
- 31:277:30 AM. You know, we put kids are
- 31:31usually already put in teams and stuff and I think we have arm
- 31:35bands that they'll be wearing and stuff.
- 31:37So you'll go and sit with your team in the and then we have,
- 31:40you know, just introductory to all the coaching staff and all
- 31:44the volunteers that are there and just a run of the day of,
- 31:48you know, like what's going to go on during the camp.
- 31:50And then we'll, we'll break out into different, you know, areas
- 31:53that we're going to going to be teaching in.
- 31:55We'll have offense and defense, fundamental stuff that's going
- 31:59to be taught. And then, you know, like we'll
- 32:02have games that we're play at the end of, you know, like all
- 32:05the all the stations and stuff that we have.
- 32:08And then we'll have lunch, you know, a snack ready for them at
- 32:11the end of the day too. So again, it's just a great day.
- 32:14A lot of information be, you know, given out also just on,
- 32:18you know, football and nutrition and all the all the type of
- 32:21things that people want to know nowadays.
- 32:24Our fundamentals taught. Did you find maybe that's
- 32:27lacking in some respects? I mean, I'm guessing you guys
- 32:29get into it, but are you kind of surprised at some point that
- 32:33the, you know, I can't believe these kids don't know this?
- 32:35Yeah, sometimes it, it is, you know, 'cause I, I think a lot of
- 32:40people just miss out on on the just basics.
- 32:43You know, they're, they're trying to over teach a lot of
- 32:45other things and concepts and, and all these other things and
- 32:49forget that, you know, this kid really can't catch the ball or,
- 32:52you know, like how do you really carry a football or, or, you
- 32:56know, like how do you switch from right to left and, and
- 32:58things like that, you know, like when you run the ball.
- 33:01So a lot of that stuff is a little missed, I would say,
- 33:04because a lot of these coaches nowadays are are really
- 33:08concentrating on their, you know, like alignments and you
- 33:11know, all the, all the things that they how to do to try and
- 33:14win, I would say. What are the What are the ages
- 33:17of these kids? This is third grade to 8th.
- 33:20Grade 3rd to 8th, 3rd to 8th grade.
- 33:21So when you when you get these kids, do they show up?
- 33:23They all want to be the quarterback.
- 33:25No, a lot of them I would say. Like nowadays it's like wide
- 33:29receiver and DBS where the money's made.
- 33:33Yeah, right. Not so much running backs I see
- 33:37anymore, you know. You guys here?
- 33:39But, you know, I think we're making a comeback with Saquan's,
- 33:42you know, like year. Yeah.
- 33:44And, you know, like, who else is there?
- 33:47Henry Caffrey, You know, some of these guys that are doing well
- 33:51out there. It seems like we're making a
- 33:52comeback. See, when you went back in your
- 33:54day when you would have been going to the NFL, the running
- 33:56back position was still, you know, yeah.
- 33:59Yeah. So it was great, you know, back
- 34:01then, I know right back then, I hear you, But I mean, it was
- 34:06great. You know, I still think it's a
- 34:08it's a high valued position, you know, like if you can get the
- 34:10right running back and and things like that too, that that
- 34:14that can help carry a team over. I think it's an awesome, awesome
- 34:18position. You know, they're running back
- 34:19and do a lot of different things that a lot of other players on
- 34:22the team can't do. So it's very versatile position.
- 34:26So I've always enjoyed it and played it and you know, I
- 34:30recommend anybody that's a good athlete or anything like that
- 34:33definitely try it for sure. Tavian, One thing that I've seen
- 34:36here lately as my kids are starting to get into sports a
- 34:39little bit deeper is how quickly people specialize.
- 34:42For people that don't know, just remember you as a Hawkeye great.
- 34:44And in the NFL you are an elite level soccer player too.
- 34:48That multi sport part of it and somebody that does what you do
- 34:51on your day job, certainly something that you know
- 34:53incredibly well. Don't want to have these kids
- 34:55specialize too early? No, not at all.
- 34:58You know, I, I tell parents and stuff all the time to make sure
- 35:01they play like multiple sports when, when I've I've just, you
- 35:05know, like me being a trainer and performance trainer and, and
- 35:09things for decades now, right? I can say decades.
- 35:14I've just seen it way too often where kids burn out, you know,
- 35:18like they get to high school or even the first year of college
- 35:21and they're burnt out because they, they just specialized in
- 35:24one sport growing up and stuff. And, and you know, I, I just
- 35:28hate seeing it. And there's a lot of lot of
- 35:30great players out there that aren't playing their sport
- 35:33anymore because they, they burn out from other youth sport.
- 35:36Just just specializing in one sport.
- 35:39You know, growing up. So I, you know, like I was a
- 35:41three sport athlete, but also played, you know, baseball and,
- 35:46and, you know, track and all these other things too growing
- 35:49up. So it made me well, you know, I
- 35:52I think like versed in a lot of lot of other sports, but it also
- 35:56just made me better at my main sport, you know, like which I
- 35:59chose, you chose to play you. Chose college and stuff you
- 36:02chose well I want to get. Yeah.
- 36:04The Travis scores from the Iowa Foundation is here Get to him in
- 36:07one second, but I don't want to run out of time on that before I
- 36:10ask this. Kids need to bring what to this
- 36:13camp in Des Moines? Well, I mean like we'll have
- 36:16water stations and all those type of things.
- 36:18So I mean, just football shoes, make sure they have good, you
- 36:24know, a tire on, you know, it should be a good warm day.
- 36:28So shorts and T-shirt. We will have camp T-shirts also
- 36:31at same time. But again, you know, like you
- 36:34just bring a great attitude, be willing to have fun and, and be
- 36:38coachable and, and just, you know, just just come and have
- 36:42have a great time. Good stuff, Travis.
- 36:44Good to see you. Tell us about the Iowa
- 36:46Foundation. What's your role in ALL?
- 36:48This. Yeah.
- 36:48Thanks for having me. Yeah, the Iowa Foundation is
- 36:50just a nonprofit that I started a few years ago, basically aimed
- 36:54at giving kids an opportunity that may not have had
- 36:56opportunities otherwise. The goal is to come alongside
- 37:00athletes like Tavian and Tim and really use their platform to
- 37:03give back to to, you know, the communities that they came from,
- 37:06two guys from Iowa that love to be from Iowa, love to come back
- 37:09and give back to Iowa. So the Iowa capitalize it in the
- 37:13Iowa Foundation, and that just stands for impactful
- 37:15opportunities with athletes. So whether that's putting on
- 37:18free football camps, we've done some stuff with different
- 37:20collectives. Iowa sent folks from the Swarm.
- 37:23We've had the We Will Basketball collective the last three years
- 37:26down on the South side of Des Moines with Des Moines Parks and
- 37:29Rec there. You know, we've done everything
- 37:31from girls wrestling camps for free.
- 37:34And we just started doing some officials training.
- 37:35So we're getting youth umpires into.
- 37:37Can't have enough. Baseball and softball, Yep.
- 37:39And teaching them not only the mechanics, but teaching them
- 37:42also life skills, financial literacy, communication,
- 37:45professionalism, things like that.
- 37:47And then lastly, kind of really focusing on helping get coaching
- 37:49into coaching the high school, excuse me, the high school
- 37:52level. It's quite a bit, quite a bit of
- 37:54a commitment from a financial standpoint.
- 37:56The class is pretty long too. But then you got to think about,
- 37:59yeah, the, the, the seasons actually that they're coaching.
- 38:02So really, how do we come alongside athletes, come
- 38:04alongside youth sports organizations and just, you
- 38:07know, enhance those and give people an opportunity?
- 38:10The Iowa Foundation, Iowa Foundation, the Iowa
- 38:13foundation.com's got all the info.
- 38:15Tavin, anything else you want to say before got like 30 seconds
- 38:19left? Just come and have a great time.
