- 0:00Hello and welcome to fostering today's episode. Episode five will be about
- 0:06comfort. So I have a couple questions for you mom. So the first question is why do
- 0:12you feel like people don't step out of their comfort zone? I mean I think there
- 0:18is a lot of reasons. You experienced that just the other day whenever we were
- 0:23coming home from our trip and I said hey let's stop and do something and you
- 0:27said no I just want to go home and I said why why do you always want to just
- 0:32go home and you're like because it's comfortable and I said well what we can
- 0:36explore we can go do whatever we want to do and you said I know I just don't I
- 0:42just don't I just don't feel comfortable with that I just want to go home I know
- 0:44like we're what I have at home I'm more comfortable and that's what sparked our
- 0:49conversation for today's topic so why why do you feel like kids don't want to
- 0:57get out of their comfort zone? Because I feel like if trying something new and you
- 1:04fail at it if I feel like it just be kind of better if you don't try because if
- 1:09you know you're gonna fail then why even try it? So comfortable with status quo like
- 1:16just being like the same old day in and day out and I think that's what a lot of
- 1:21people adults they get stuck in the routine of not living their best life
- 1:29people get in the routine of you know eating an unhealthy diet they get
- 1:35comfortable with not going to the gym they get comfortable with being
- 1:39uncomfortable and then it just it's so overwhelming to people that they don't
- 1:45know where to start and so they just remain where they're at and they don't
- 1:52drive themselves out of a vicious pattern. Okay my second question is what is
- 2:01your definition of comfort? Comfort would be something that is relaxing that is
- 2:13peaceful brings you joy yeah that's it. Okay my question number three is what
- 2:31brings you comfort and why? A lot of things I think bring me comfort now I
- 2:42think a lot of things did not used to make me comfortable I mean versus like
- 2:48yeah a comfortable pair of shoes a comfortable pair of pants the sofa is
- 2:52comfortable going to and from work is comfortable like just living an everyday
- 3:00life is comfortable like your dad brings me comfort you know having good friends
- 3:11can bring you comfort but I think that when we look at like true comfort we
- 3:16have to look at Christ because he is our comforter he is our redeemer he is the
- 3:26only one that is going to be there no matter what and so finding comfort in
- 3:31the Lord resting in his arms and just knowing that you're taking care of I
- 3:39think is it's like you can't even describe it like once you fall into his
- 3:47arms and just realize you're sitting at his feet and he's just taking care of
- 3:53you that's comfort. I feel like comfort would be Jesus and you because you have
- 4:01done a lot in my life that has comfort me through like everything like all the
- 4:06sports I've done when I'm sad when anxious and everything you're just there I
- 4:10feel like you bring God into everything which makes me feel more comfortable with
- 4:15it. What do you feel like how could kids find comfort in Christ in a tough
- 4:22situation? Christ says that in the Bible it says that he's always with you no
- 4:29matter what even if you send you he still loves you and everything so if you
- 4:35don't have a guardian or a parent or someone that doesn't make you comfortable
- 4:38just go to God he's just right there with you he listens to everything that you
- 4:43say he is right with you all like all the way. I mean and we also too I think
- 4:51that we need to point out that walking as a Christian is not comfortable
- 4:56sometimes the majority of your decisions are not going to be comfortable to your
- 5:02flesh so you are going to have to make those tough decisions of how to speak
- 5:09what to do what to watch what to listen to what you're going to allow yourself
- 5:16to do whenever you're out in public and so making those tough decisions and
- 5:21being uncomfortable in that situation I think is really important and second
- 5:27Corinthians 1 through 1 4 it says that who comforts us in all of our
- 5:36afflictions so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any afflictions
- 5:41with comfort with each we ourselves are comforted by God and so we may be able
- 5:50to comfort and that's one of God's promises and purposes and suffering of
- 5:54Christians is that we will experience direct personal comfort from God and then
- 6:00from that experiences and administering God comforts us and the most in
- 6:07whenever we have afflictions because he says that we're gonna have hard times
- 6:11we're gonna have afflictions we're gonna have things happen to us people are
- 6:14gonna die people are gonna get sick you know we're gonna have things in our life
- 6:20that bring us sadness and just despair but the one that brings us comfort is
- 6:29God is Jesus and so really turning to him for our comfort I think is is just
- 6:39really the best answer while you can have people here on earth but people here
- 6:43on earth can let you down and so you know turning to Christ I think is a great
- 6:48idea okay my fourth question is why do you think Jesus is comforting because he's
- 6:57never let me down he has always been there
- 7:06because we have scripture to turn to and you know this he can speak to you
- 7:12through the word and we have to realize that what we want and what his ways are
- 7:21our his ways are so much greater than our ways and we have to rely and know
- 7:29that he's never been late he's never been wrong and we have to be uncomfortable
- 7:37while we wait on the Lord because if we're doing things out of his will and
- 7:45we're walking in our own way and we have that right he gave us free will and so we
- 7:51don't have to follow him we get to he wants that relationship with us and so
- 7:57during those times and we don't understand why you know choosing to be
- 8:02uncomfortable and waiting on God to answer the prayer about the next step
- 8:08about what to do next about who to talk to you about what words to say and so
- 8:12allowing yourself to be uncomfortable I think will only grow you in maturity as
- 8:18a Christian as a follower but as you get into real life situations I mean eating
- 8:25habits exercising not giving up on yourself I think that we as a society
- 8:32need to be more uncomfortable and and choosing the past that many don't go
- 8:42down what do you feel kids struggle with more about not being comfortable what
- 8:49are situations that kids need to be uncomfortable with
- 8:54can you like elaborate that and so like what are situations where you just
- 9:01choose comfort over pushing yourself I feel like a lot with like grades and
- 9:08sports I feel like that's my big thing sports okay for the listeners that are
- 9:15listening what do you feel like do you feel like youth they struggle with diet
- 9:21do you feel like they struggle with exercise and not knowing where to start
- 9:26and just being comfortable sitting on the couch watching TV eating the bag of
- 9:30chips I feel like that those kids really don't worry about that I just feel like
- 9:38we struggle a lot with what people think and like our comfort zone with like
- 9:43talking to people I feel like that's a big one too okay what do you how could
- 9:48you bring Christ into conversations about comfort to kids um if they were
- 9:57struggling with comfort I would just say that Jesus brings you comfort he is
- 10:02always just listening do you how could they approach that and and tell their
- 10:09parent that what do you mean do you feel like they can have a conversation with
- 10:14their parent what happens if you have a teen that is a believer and their
- 10:19parent is not I would just say try to push your parents to where they feel
- 10:26kind of not uncomfortable or you feel uncomfortable telling them and making
- 10:33them try like kind of feel comfortable and then where you can talk to them
- 10:38about more about Christ and start to be comfortable the first thing you gotta do
- 10:43is to be uncomfortable to be comfortable mm-hmm I yeah I often tell my
- 10:49patients that I want you to be comfortable being uncomfortable because
- 10:54you're never gonna see change without being uncomfortable like whether that is
- 10:59with a diet with an exercise with a new agenda with reading a book or spending
- 11:06more time outside or whatever it is you have to get uncomfortable I get to grow
- 11:12my muscles my muscles have to be uncomfortable to run a half marathon I
- 11:16have to be uncomfortable I had to be short of breath I had to spend time and
- 11:20time and time again being uncomfortable to run to play basketball you have to be
- 11:27uncomfortable we sweat a lot in practice you know you have to be
- 11:32uncomfortable to change how you're how you eat you have to get uncomfortable and
- 11:40learn the the behaviors that you've learned and so I think that maturing in
- 11:46your faith maturing in your your habits that you have in life if you really want
- 11:52to see change you're gonna have to be uncomfortable mm-hmm okay my last and
- 11:59fifth question what makes you uncomfortable like nothing really
- 12:05specific but like what makes you uncomfortable talking in public I feel
- 12:16like I get really nervous and I'm uncomfortable doing it mm-hmm but once
- 12:23I'm up there I love it height I'm scared of oh yeah so it makes me
- 12:29uncomfortable and roller coasters yeah yeah not being in control makes me
- 12:39really uncomfortable that's why I drive everywhere yeah control but then also to
- 12:50realizing that we really don't have control and God's in control so that
- 12:56brings me comfort knowing that he has my back and so I can have a an agenda but
- 13:06resting in him and just knowing that he has my back brings me comfort mm-hmm what
- 13:13would be something that brings what makes you uncomfortable clouds clouds oh
- 13:18they're so creepy and probably like worrying about the future too much like
- 13:28not having enough money not having a good family that like we have I feel like
- 13:34and I would want my kid to be like close to me we like and tell me stuff like you
- 13:41and dad yeah I just really like how this family is so I won't like my family
- 13:49would be like this mm-hmm what do you feel like a closing statement would be
- 13:55to bring someone that is an unbeliever into knowing God and knowing that Jesus
- 14:05is for them is there anything that you could tell someone to make them a little
- 14:12uncomfortable to bring them close to Christ wait do like so if I was asking
- 14:24someone so if I was asking someone if they believed in God and like they're
- 14:31like I just don't believe in them I feel like one of the main questions would
- 14:36make me feel uncomfortable as why mm-hmm like because what they don't know why
- 14:42and they're just saying that cuz I feel like another thing that would be
- 14:46uncomfortable during that conversation is they don't want to be wrong if Christ
- 14:52isn't real but like the thing is if Christ is real and you say he's not and
- 15:00you just don't go to heaven you just don't get a live on the good area of
- 15:06everything but if you do choose to believe in God but you're not sure yet
- 15:12just keep on reading the Bible and just talking to him because he will answer
- 15:18you it's just that simple and yeah just just simply just start asking and just
- 15:26talking to him before you even open up scripture and just having those
- 15:31conversations because you have to take that first step that first step that
- 15:35first awkward conversation can make that person feel really uncomfortable and it's
- 15:42just that first step of really becoming and knowing your heavenly father and
- 15:49knowing him as a person that listens that can really bring you comfort in the
- 15:55midst of all your trials and tribulations and so I think as we close
- 16:00this podcast I think that let's pray let's pray for our listeners for comfort
