Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Well. Oral hearings for the Treaty Principal's Bill get underway today,
- 0:03Speaker 1: marking the start of eighty hours worth of hearings over
- 0:06Speaker 1: the course of a month. The total number of online
- 0:09Speaker 1: submissions received isn't known yet as processing continues. Author of
- 0:13Speaker 1: the bill and AT Party leader David Seymour will be
- 0:16Speaker 1: the first to give his submission later this morning. A
- 0:19Speaker 1: total of fifty oral submissions will be heard on day one.
- 0:23Speaker 1: Lady Turditi Moxon is the managing director of tair Kahual
- 0:27Speaker 1: Health and we'll be speaking at Parliament later this morning.
- 0:30Speaker 1: And she joins me, now, a very good morning to.
- 0:32Speaker 2: You, very good morning to you too.
- 0:35Speaker 1: Look, thanks so much for getting up early in joining us.
- 0:37Speaker 1: What are you expecting today? How are you expecting things
- 0:40Speaker 1: to go?
- 0:42Speaker 2: Well? I think it should go pretty smoothly. I think
- 0:45Speaker 2: they've got a lot to do. But our submission is
- 0:49Speaker 2: basically we're saying what what we believe needs to happen
- 0:53Speaker 2: in terms of this bill and the fact that we
- 0:55Speaker 2: reject it, both reject and oppose.
- 0:58Speaker 1: It's been a heck of a process, hasn't How have
- 1:01Speaker 1: you found the process to get to this point?
- 1:05Speaker 2: Well, it has been a heck of a process, and
- 1:08Speaker 2: the worst of it is there's a waste of time
- 1:10Speaker 2: simply because labor are sorry national and and you said
- 1:15Speaker 2: the first have both said that they won't they weren't,
- 1:19Speaker 2: they weren't supported beyond this process. How ridiculous is that?
- 1:23Speaker 2: Why would you put us through that process? Is that
- 1:26Speaker 2: if you have no intention of supporting it going forward.
- 1:30Speaker 2: So you know, we're pleased about that, don't get me wrong,
- 1:33Speaker 2: but I'm sure we could be spending a lot of that.
- 1:38Speaker 2: All that money and all that time and resource aren't
- 1:40Speaker 2: better things?
- 1:41Speaker 1: Okay, well, there's a fair point. I think you're making
- 1:43Speaker 1: a good point. So what is the point and you
- 1:46Speaker 1: making a submission today with a bill that's going nowhere.
- 1:50Speaker 2: Well, simply because we must be heard. And you'll find
- 1:54Speaker 2: that the other people behind me, or forty nine other
- 1:57Speaker 2: people behind me will feel the same way. And you know,
- 2:01Speaker 2: you've got to remember too that we had the largest
- 2:05Speaker 2: protests in the country in terms of the Treaty Principles bill,
- 2:12Speaker 2: and so you know, forty two thousand people got out
- 2:15Speaker 2: and spoke to their feet. So you know, I actually
- 2:20Speaker 2: think that there.
- 2:21Speaker 3: Is it's important to be able to say to them
- 2:26Speaker 3: and all of those yet to come in our future
- 2:31Speaker 3: that we try to do something.
- 2:33Speaker 1: Do you think it, Well, look, it's a fair point,
- 2:35Speaker 1: and I think a lot of people would love to
- 2:37Speaker 1: be there listening to what's going on, or maybe not.
- 2:40Speaker 1: Do you think do you think there was widely a
- 2:43Speaker 1: misinterpretation of what the treaty Principal's Bill was wanting to achieve.
- 2:46Speaker 1: Do you think it was widely misunderstood by the majority
- 2:49Speaker 1: of people?
- 2:51Speaker 2: Well, I think for a lot number of people who
- 2:56Speaker 2: do not understand what the treaty means and have nounderstanding
- 3:00Speaker 2: of what history history of this country is or even
- 3:06Speaker 2: the plight of Mardi in our country, I would say, very,
- 3:10Speaker 2: very categorically, there's a lot of people who have put
- 3:13Speaker 2: in submissions, will have submitted have a misunderstanding of what
- 3:18Speaker 2: it means.
- 3:19Speaker 1: I know you're going to be speaking very early this morning.
- 3:21Speaker 1: I think you're on at eight thirty this morning, aren't you.
- 3:24Speaker 2: That's correct?
- 3:25Speaker 1: Yes, Can you give us a little bit of a
- 3:26Speaker 1: taster about what you'll be saying.
- 3:29Speaker 2: Well, definitely, I'll be saying that we rejected and opposed
- 3:33Speaker 2: the at the and also I think that that it
- 3:39Speaker 2: should be rejected and opposed by the Select Committee. But
- 3:44Speaker 2: more over than that than not, I really think that
- 3:48Speaker 2: that you know that this is a breach of the
- 3:51Speaker 2: three too white tonguey and and it will and it
- 3:57Speaker 2: will be a breach forever no matter how they try
- 4:00Speaker 2: to reinterpret the principles and pretty basically take over from
- 4:06Speaker 2: the courts. You know, there's a difference between the courts
- 4:11Speaker 2: interpreting this, you know, the principles from the acts. You know,
- 4:18Speaker 2: government react ax and the court's interpret the acts and
- 4:24Speaker 2: the police enforce the acts. So here we are we've
- 4:27Speaker 2: got a government trying to do both.
- 4:30Speaker 1: Lady Turdyt Moxham, thank you so much for your time
- 4:32Speaker 1: and all the very best this morning. And it's an
- 4:34Speaker 1: early start your submission at eight thirty this morning. Thanks
- 4:37Speaker 1: for your time. For more from Early Edition with Ryan Bridge,
