Latest / Birdland Territory / O's defense unravels in Boston series opener
Transcript
- 0:06Speaker 1: Well night went on at Boston. The Oriols got some
- 0:09Speaker 1: offense going against Peyton Totley and they were right there
- 0:13Speaker 1: to put an end to the Red Sox long winning streak,
- 0:16Speaker 1: but in the end, four errors was too many to
- 0:20Speaker 1: overcome and the Ools lost the series opener at Fenway
- 0:23Speaker 1: Park Monday night, six to five. Welcome in to the
- 0:26Speaker 1: latest Sperdland Territory with Steve, tim and Brad taping the
- 0:30Speaker 1: morning after Game one at Boston. So gentlemen, that was disappointing.
- 0:34Speaker 1: On defense, the Orioles had been making some progress and
- 0:39Speaker 1: it really took a major step back a terrible time
- 0:42Speaker 1: to have a terrible game with the Gloves, but that's
- 0:45Speaker 1: what they faced. To their credit, they all most still
- 0:48Speaker 1: pulled that game out. And if Tyler O'Neal hits that
- 0:51Speaker 1: ball at the end of the game two feet higher,
- 0:52Speaker 1: maybe they do. And so I give them credit for that,
- 0:56Speaker 1: and now we see how the rest of the series
- 0:58Speaker 1: plays out.
- 1:00Speaker 2: Yeah, definitely, I think it's disappointing, like you said, Steve,
- 1:02Speaker 2: just because they've been playing such good defense recently to
- 1:06Speaker 2: kind of have a revert back to the problems that
- 1:08Speaker 2: were coming earlier in this season. In this kind of environment,
- 1:12Speaker 2: this kind of spot is obviously disappointing, but I just
- 1:15Speaker 2: like their fight. I think, you know, it's kind of
- 1:17Speaker 2: one of those things they've been doing all year long.
- 1:20Speaker 2: And for me, just kind of watching that game last night,
- 1:22Speaker 2: I thought it was a really entertaining All East game
- 1:24Speaker 2: like that. That was games I remember when I was playing,
- 1:27Speaker 2: and it was a fun environment to be a part
- 1:29Speaker 2: of and watch on the screen. I can't only imagine
- 1:32Speaker 2: how it was in the ballpark, but I would have
- 1:33Speaker 2: liked to have seen them come out on top. But
- 1:35Speaker 2: it's just kind of one of those things where they
- 1:38Speaker 2: they shot themselves in the foot and just kind of
- 1:40Speaker 2: you can't really overcome those when you're playing a team
- 1:43Speaker 2: that's on a roll like the Red Sox at Elmway
- 1:46Speaker 2: Park and in a division game like that, it's really
- 1:49Speaker 2: tough to overcome. And they just unfortunately weren't able to
- 1:52Speaker 2: get over the hump last night, even though they were
- 1:53Speaker 2: really close.
- 1:56Speaker 3: Yeah, just a really frustrating game, and it wasn't play atmosphere,
- 2:00Speaker 3: man like. That was their biggest regular season series that
- 2:04Speaker 3: they've had in at least two years, going back to
- 2:06Speaker 3: their last postseason series, and sold out crowd, and it's
- 2:11Speaker 3: kind of funny.
- 2:12Speaker 4: I'm watching the game.
- 2:13Speaker 3: And I'm thinking heading in that this lineup is obviously shorthanded,
- 2:18Speaker 3: no Adlee, no Samuel Bisio, and you see it and
- 2:21Speaker 3: you're thinking, oh, geez, runs might be tough to come by.
- 2:24Speaker 3: And you look at the final box score they strike
- 2:26Speaker 3: out fifteen times, which ordinarily you'd be like, oh my gosh,
- 2:29Speaker 3: that's horrific. But I felt like it was a pretty
- 2:32Speaker 3: gutsy offensive performance given the circumstances. They out hit the
- 2:36Speaker 3: Red Sox had eleven hits. They were four for eleven
- 2:40Speaker 3: with runners in scoring position. But ultimately, guys, you're facing
- 2:44Speaker 3: the hottest team in baseball, they're on the really long
- 2:47Speaker 3: winning streak, and it can't make four errors. And Gunnar
- 2:51Speaker 3: Henderson there was also the contrarist liner, which you know
- 2:55Speaker 3: he would say that he would should make that play
- 2:57Speaker 3: and he missed time the jump, it wasn't rule an error.
- 3:01Speaker 3: And just other self inflicted mistakes. Pete Alonso trying to
- 3:05Speaker 3: steal a bag when Gunner Henderson was two for two
- 3:08Speaker 3: with two doubles in the fifth inning. That didn't make
- 3:11Speaker 3: much sense to me. Just too many self inflicted mistakes
- 3:14Speaker 3: to overcome.
- 3:17Speaker 1: It was disappointing the throwing last night throughout the game
- 3:21Speaker 1: for the Oriols. You can start with the Jeremiah Jackson
- 3:23Speaker 1: playing the third inning. He looked like he had more
- 3:26Speaker 1: time than he thought he could have set himself a
- 3:28Speaker 1: little bit rather than on the move throw that he
- 3:31Speaker 1: came up short on. And even on the other end
- 3:34Speaker 1: of that, Pete scoops that a lot of the time,
- 3:36Speaker 1: but he just didn't in that specific instance. Led the
- 3:39Speaker 1: two runs. Gunners throw home terrible way off the mars
- 3:43Speaker 1: grows from the outfield, way off the mark. I'm not
- 3:46Speaker 1: sure if that was just an outlier. We've seen the
- 3:48Speaker 1: Oarls make bad throws throughout the year, but never this
- 3:52Speaker 1: many in one night, and so just a bad night
- 3:55Speaker 1: for it. And it's one of those games. I guess, Brad,
- 3:59Speaker 1: it's a flush game. You take the good from it,
- 4:02Speaker 1: and I don't know that they can go out on
- 4:04Speaker 1: the field today and do defensive work that'll fix all this.
- 4:07Speaker 1: But they just have to make better throws tonight.
- 4:10Speaker 2: Yeah, definitely, I think it's just one of those games.
- 4:12Speaker 2: You just move on. They're still playing hot, they're still
- 4:15Speaker 2: playing well. They put themselves in a position to win.
- 4:17Speaker 2: Like you said, a couple of feet above higher hit
- 4:20Speaker 2: by Tyler O'Neil there in the ninth and they take
- 4:22Speaker 2: the lead. So it's kind of one of those games.
- 4:24Speaker 2: You just got a flush to go back out there
- 4:26Speaker 2: today and get back on another winning streak. That's all
- 4:28Speaker 2: you can really do. And I think two factors kind
- 4:31Speaker 2: of play into maybe the throwing being off. Fenoway Park
- 4:33Speaker 2: is a weird park with the way the dimensions are
- 4:36Speaker 2: super short and left field obviously with the Monster, and
- 4:39Speaker 2: then in right field there's so much territory there to
- 4:41Speaker 2: cover for the outfielders that I think it might just
- 4:44Speaker 2: throw you off a little bit, especially when you're not
- 4:45Speaker 2: playing there as many times as they used to in
- 4:48Speaker 2: the Division. When you go to a ballpark like that,
- 4:50Speaker 2: it's just kind of things that are a little bit off.
- 4:52Speaker 2: And then the other side of that is the lineups.
- 4:54Speaker 2: With the injuries, We've had so many different guys playing
- 4:57Speaker 2: different positions in Carnacion last night, there's just guys playing
- 5:01Speaker 2: that haven't played together a ton, and that could just
- 5:03Speaker 2: be that's just something that I'm kind of throwing out
- 5:06Speaker 2: there as could be part of the problems with some
- 5:08Speaker 2: of the relay throws were a little bit off, and
- 5:09Speaker 2: some of the air and throws that happened maybe could
- 5:12Speaker 2: just be, you know, just having different lineups out there
- 5:14Speaker 2: constantly on a day to day basis.
- 5:17Speaker 3: It certainly plays a factor. But I think unfortunately for
- 5:21Speaker 3: this team, it's just been a season long issue defensively,
- 5:25Speaker 3: and it reared its ugly head at the worst time yesterday, guys,
- 5:29Speaker 3: because if you want to look at the glass half
- 5:31Speaker 3: full of last night, and Brad you've been saying it,
- 5:34Speaker 3: you had four errors gunners play could have easily been
- 5:38Speaker 3: a fifth error.
- 5:39Speaker 2: Yeah, and you.
- 5:40Speaker 4: Were still as close to winning that game.
- 5:41Speaker 3: If you cut those mistakes, those defensive mistakes in half,
- 5:46Speaker 3: you probably win by multiple runs, guys. And going up
- 5:50Speaker 3: against that team so undermanned with your offense and so
- 5:55Speaker 3: many guys beat up and out of the lineup right now,
- 5:58Speaker 3: it was a gutsy fight. But unfortunately for this team,
- 6:01Speaker 3: when you're this deep into the season, the moral victories,
- 6:04Speaker 3: it's hard to take a ton in that.
- 6:07Speaker 1: We're gonna get into some of the injury situations with
- 6:10Speaker 1: the catchers. I got an interesting farm note I want
- 6:13Speaker 1: to throw in Toyler O'Neal's swinging it better. We're gonna
- 6:16Speaker 1: be touching on that and a lot more're coming up
- 6:18Speaker 1: on Birdland Territory, but right now, time to remind you
- 6:22Speaker 1: to shop the twenty twenty six All Star collection now

- 6:45Speaker 1: The Red Sox man with another win. That's fourteen straight
- 6:48Speaker 1: by eighty two twenty nine score. They're pitching so well.
- 6:52Speaker 1: Few games this year where they've given up during this
- 6:54Speaker 1: win streak five or more. Last night was one, but
- 6:57Speaker 1: they've now won nine straight al Ease games as well.
- 7:00Speaker 1: We'll get into some other topics with the o's in
- 7:02Speaker 1: the Red Sox coming up on Birdland Territory.
- 7:05Speaker 5: What if you can actually have it all? And I'm

- 8:03Speaker 5: speed and coverage varies. Cementmobile dot com Bertland Territory for
- 8:10Speaker 5: you today.
- 8:10Speaker 1: Talking about game one of the series, Joe's losing Boston
- 8:13Speaker 1: six to five. So the Red Sox are fifty one
- 8:16Speaker 1: and forty eight and the ools are forty nine and
- 8:19Speaker 1: fifty two. Maybe lost in the game a little bit
- 8:23Speaker 1: is that Gunner had those three doubles. I think all
- 8:26Speaker 1: three were off lefties at all opo. We keep saying,
- 8:29Speaker 1: when is he going to have a turnaround, And maybe
- 8:33Speaker 1: this was a game that showed something we said going
- 8:36Speaker 1: into it. If Pete and Gunner went six for twelve
- 8:38Speaker 1: in Fenway, I bet this will look really good for
- 8:41Speaker 1: the Oriols. Maybe Gunner is on his way to doing that.
- 8:45Speaker 2: Yeah, I think so. I think that's what he needed
- 8:47Speaker 2: to kind of get back to doing, was using all fields.
- 8:49Speaker 2: I think he was getting really pull happy. And when
- 8:51Speaker 2: you're not able to get to the fastball like he's
- 8:53Speaker 2: been struggling on the inside part of the plate, especially
- 8:56Speaker 2: with some higher velocity, it just makes hitting really difficult.
- 9:00Speaker 2: But if he's able to use all the field like
- 9:01Speaker 2: he was last night, that was a great example going
- 9:04Speaker 2: the other way, especially against lefties, you start to somehow
- 9:07Speaker 2: get your hands into a better position. I wish I
- 9:09Speaker 2: knew more about the mechanics of it all, but somehow,
- 9:13Speaker 2: when you're able to keep the barrel in his own
- 9:15Speaker 2: longer and hit the ball the other way, also in
- 9:17Speaker 2: that inside pitch becomes a little bit easier to hit,
- 9:19Speaker 2: and when the pitchers started making mistakes where they're not
- 9:22Speaker 2: throwing it on the corner but they're leaving it middle in,
- 9:24Speaker 2: maybe he's going to start turning on that ball. And
- 9:26Speaker 2: that's really what the Oils would need. I mean, a
- 9:28Speaker 2: hot streak from Gunner would go really, really long way
- 9:31Speaker 2: right now, and hopefully last night was the beginning of
- 9:33Speaker 2: something that he gets going on a roll here.
- 9:36Speaker 4: He was able to set the tone in this game.
- 9:39Speaker 3: He got that double in the first inning with two
- 9:41Speaker 3: outs and then Tyler O'Neal, both of them going opo
- 9:44Speaker 3: Gunner and O'Neill in that instance. But also, Guys, I
- 9:48Speaker 3: felt like in the ninth inning him getting that double
- 9:52Speaker 3: off the Green Monster, I thought that that was huge
- 9:55Speaker 3: for him because unfortunately for Gunner, and this is not
- 9:58Speaker 3: indicative of his ca he's come up big and big
- 10:01Speaker 3: time spots so often, but this season it hasn't been
- 10:05Speaker 3: nearly as much. And ordinarily you would think maybe that
- 10:08Speaker 3: would score Colden Kowser. It hit off the wall and
- 10:11Speaker 3: then Durant had to play it off a soft top
- 10:14Speaker 3: and then he went right to second base to try
- 10:16Speaker 3: to get Gunner, but Buck Britton ended up giving Colden
- 10:18Speaker 3: Kowser the stop sign there at third base. But I
- 10:22Speaker 3: think it's big. I think it's massive. And this Red
- 10:26Speaker 3: Sox team, what is their strength. It is their pitching.
- 10:29Speaker 3: And in this thirteen game winning streak heading into last night,
- 10:33Speaker 3: they've only allowed three teams three times in the thirteen
- 10:37Speaker 3: games teams to score over two runs against them, and
- 10:41Speaker 3: the Orioles scored five. So you take your chances, giving
- 10:45Speaker 3: what they're the role that they've been.
- 10:47Speaker 1: On, Brad, you are ahead of the curve here. Noticing
- 10:51Speaker 1: early in the year Gunner was struggling on the inside fastballs,
- 10:55Speaker 1: and I'm wondering, this guy's hit premium fastballs before, had
- 11:00Speaker 1: a very good clip. What would make this year be
- 11:04Speaker 1: different in that respect? Is there any rhyme or reason
- 11:07Speaker 1: to it.
- 11:08Speaker 2: There's probably not a real big rhyme or reason. I
- 11:10Speaker 2: just think it could just be overall struggles for the year.
- 11:13Speaker 2: It could be confidence. It could just be maybe a
- 11:15Speaker 2: mechanical change that he did a little bit this offseason
- 11:18Speaker 2: to try to get the balls out over the plate
- 11:20Speaker 2: more and now he's struggling to do his strength. I
- 11:24Speaker 2: wish I knew why, like seasons were so different when
- 11:28Speaker 2: it comes to hitting certain pitches, or even for pitchers
- 11:30Speaker 2: when throwing certain pitches. It just kind of is an
- 11:33Speaker 2: ebb and flow of a season. And I just kind
- 11:35Speaker 2: of hope that seeing these balls out over the plate,
- 11:38Speaker 2: he starts getting challenged more inside and somehow is just
- 11:41Speaker 2: able to get to that pitch more and then he's
- 11:43Speaker 2: able to do damage all over the field because he
- 11:45Speaker 2: doesn't have to be a pull side hitter to do
- 11:47Speaker 2: damage and to hit extra base hits. And I think
- 11:49Speaker 2: that's one of the things where when you're playing at
- 11:51Speaker 2: Candy Yards, you have that kind of short portion and
- 11:53Speaker 2: right with the flag poles, you kind of can get
- 11:56Speaker 2: pull happy. But he doesn't have to be that kind
- 11:58Speaker 2: of hitter. He knows he doesn't have to be that
- 11:59Speaker 2: kind of hitter. And I just think last night is
- 12:01Speaker 2: just kind of a confidence booster that, hey, maybe I
- 12:04Speaker 2: am the hair that I know I can be, and
- 12:06Speaker 2: you just never know what kind of hot streak a
- 12:08Speaker 2: player like Gunner can go on when he starts hitting
- 12:11Speaker 2: pitches that he knows he can handle. And I just
- 12:13Speaker 2: hold last night was kind of just the first game
- 12:16Speaker 2: of twenty game Monster streak for him, because, like we said,
- 12:21Speaker 2: he can carry this offense for weeks at a time
- 12:23Speaker 2: if he gets hopped.
- 12:25Speaker 3: And unfortunately, the pressure just continues to ratchet up for
- 12:28Speaker 3: Gunner Henderson, for Pete Alonso, really all of their top players.
- 12:32Speaker 3: We were saying this even before the injuries Steve where
- 12:36Speaker 3: they need Gunner Henderson to be Gunner Henderson to get
- 12:38Speaker 3: back into the playoffs. And look, the pitching has been fantastic,
- 12:43Speaker 3: and we've talked about that repeatedly, but this offense is
- 12:46Speaker 3: gonna have to really step up their game for them
- 12:49Speaker 3: to really go on a run here to get that
- 12:51Speaker 3: final wildcard spot.
- 12:55Speaker 1: Let's show a stat on the pitching, which is quite remarkable.
- 12:58Speaker 1: The Oriels put this in their Game No. Yesterday. In
- 13:01Speaker 1: the first fifty one games, their team ERA four to
- 13:04Speaker 1: ninety five was second worst in Major League Baseball. In
- 13:08Speaker 1: the next forty nine games, very similar sample, it was
- 13:13Speaker 1: third best in Major League Baseball, second worst to third best.
- 13:18Speaker 1: Essentially fifty games each fifty one to forty nine here
- 13:22Speaker 1: to get to the one hundred game mark. So bodes
- 13:24Speaker 1: well for the remaining fifty if they can be more
- 13:27Speaker 1: like the second group of fifty and I'm not sure
- 13:30Speaker 1: what changed that. I don't guys, got I really don't know.
- 13:35Speaker 1: I don't know how to explain that. But I know
- 13:38Speaker 1: third best is a lot better than second worst.
- 13:42Speaker 2: Yeah, and Steve, I don't think a lot did change.
- 13:44Speaker 2: I just think when I think of Brandy Young, I
- 13:46Speaker 2: think of Shane Shane Boss just getting ahead in the count,
- 13:49Speaker 2: Brandy Young using his fastball more effectively and locating better.
- 13:53Speaker 2: Trevor Rodgers is just locating better. This stuff hasn't changed
- 13:57Speaker 2: from what I've seen from the five starters. It just
- 13:59Speaker 2: gets ahead, and it's throwing, like I said, throwing strike
- 14:03Speaker 2: one and then just getting confidence in their top pitches
- 14:06Speaker 2: and really riding those pitches. And I think that's really
- 14:08Speaker 2: been the biggest difference last night. Shane does really deserved better.
- 14:12Speaker 2: Like his box his box score doesn't isn't the sexiest
- 14:16Speaker 2: box score, but no walks. He was ahead of everybody.
- 14:19Speaker 2: He showed a ninety nine mile on our fastball there
- 14:22Speaker 2: in one of his last innings, and it just seems
- 14:24Speaker 2: like he's getting stronger and stronger as the season goes along.
- 14:27Speaker 2: Last night, if the game didn't dictate by the score,
- 14:29Speaker 2: he could easily went into the seventh, maybe even touch
- 14:32Speaker 2: the eighth inning with where his pitch his pitch count was,
- 14:34Speaker 2: and I just think he's just getting stronger and stronger.
- 14:37Speaker 2: And we've talked about this before, but coming off his
- 14:40Speaker 2: injuries and everything, he doesn't have a ton of starts
- 14:42Speaker 2: in his major league career, and I think this is
- 14:44Speaker 2: one of those seasons where he's really starting to feel
- 14:47Speaker 2: what works for him and why he's able to go
- 14:49Speaker 2: deeper in games. And the starting staff has really just
- 14:52Speaker 2: deserved so much credit of really turning the season around
- 14:54Speaker 2: because they've been so consistent and now we just need
- 14:57Speaker 2: the offense to kind of just catch up to them.
- 14:59Speaker 2: You just never know what this team could do.
- 15:01Speaker 3: The starters certainly deserve so much love, and no one's
- 15:05Speaker 3: turned their season around more than Trevor Rodgers, for example,
- 15:08Speaker 3: because he's been unbelievable in this last seven or eight
- 15:11Speaker 3: start stretch. But Brad, I want to get your thoughts
- 15:14Speaker 3: on the bullpen man. I continue to just be amazed
- 15:17Speaker 3: when you look back at their numbers, and I always
- 15:20Speaker 3: go back to the May twenty second date because that
- 15:23Speaker 3: was the low point of the year. They just got
- 15:26Speaker 3: swept at the trop Since that point, the Orioles starting
- 15:30Speaker 3: pitching era is six best in baseball. They have the
- 15:33Speaker 3: six best bullpen era in baseball in that spam, Brad.
- 15:36Speaker 3: But then I was thinking, okay, was it just more
- 15:39Speaker 3: so in May the month? So then I went to
- 15:41Speaker 3: June twentieth and did a one month sample size. Yesterday
- 15:45Speaker 3: the Oriols bullpen was even better. They had the second
- 15:48Speaker 3: best bullpen era over the past month. It's been spectacular,
- 15:53Speaker 3: and when you consider the fact that Ryan Elsley has
- 15:56Speaker 3: not pitched much at all in that stretching. Quite frankly,
- 15:59Speaker 3: it was right when he came off the il stint
- 16:01Speaker 3: in the handful of appearances and he was shaky early on.
- 16:05Speaker 4: Just how impressed have you been with this bullpen? Brad?
- 16:08Speaker 2: Yeah, I've been super impressed. And you know what it is,
- 16:10Speaker 2: it's a lot of guys that you would not expect
- 16:12Speaker 2: to have the type of years that they're having. And
- 16:15Speaker 2: that's to me, those were always the best bullpens to
- 16:17Speaker 2: be a part of. It's not the top name guys
- 16:19Speaker 2: where you have the big closer, you have the big
- 16:21Speaker 2: setup man. It was kind of just everybody finding their
- 16:24Speaker 2: slot and doing their job and just passing the baton
- 16:27Speaker 2: on and it's funny you say those numbers because it's
- 16:30Speaker 2: kind of like it been a quiet resurgence, because it
- 16:34Speaker 2: really they hit a little bit of a lull there
- 16:36Speaker 2: and made twenty second like you said, and then from
- 16:38Speaker 2: there it's just stacking up zeros and guys just moving
- 16:41Speaker 2: the baton along, like I said. And it's been different
- 16:43Speaker 2: guys closing games, have been different guys setting up games,
- 16:46Speaker 2: and I didn't think they've just done a better job
- 16:48Speaker 2: of finding more comfortable spots for the guys and getting
- 16:51Speaker 2: them in there and so they can have their most success.
- 16:54Speaker 2: And that was one of the things when I was
- 16:56Speaker 2: with Buck. He just found a way to put you
- 16:58Speaker 2: in a spot to give you the most success. And
- 17:00Speaker 2: it sounds like a simple thing, like, oh, all managers
- 17:02Speaker 2: should do that, but it's a really difficult thing to
- 17:05Speaker 2: do over a two to three six month stretch of
- 17:08Speaker 2: a season to find a perfect spot to put guys in.
- 17:10Speaker 2: And I really think Craig Albernas and Drew French have
- 17:13Speaker 2: really done a better job of just finding the right
- 17:16Speaker 2: slot to put guys in and they've really stuck to it.
- 17:18Speaker 2: I mean, Wolfram is in there when there's more lefties
- 17:22Speaker 2: and righties Garcia has kind of slid into the seventh
- 17:25Speaker 2: eighth inniyear old Kitchrid which has really done eighth ninth.
- 17:28Speaker 2: I mean, he's been one of their bigger arms here recently.
- 17:31Speaker 2: So they've just done a really good job of finding
- 17:32Speaker 2: the spots to make these guys comfortable. And they're just
- 17:35Speaker 2: really all just doing their job when they need to
- 17:38Speaker 2: and just kind of doing it quietly. And it's been
- 17:40Speaker 2: really impressive to watch.
- 17:43Speaker 1: Quite a pitching matchup on Tuesday night in Boston Kyle Bradish,
- 17:47Speaker 1: armed with his new contract and Ranger Suarez. He got
- 17:51Speaker 1: his money over the winner, one hundred and thirty million
- 17:53Speaker 1: from the Red Sox. I was a pitcher. A lot
- 17:55Speaker 1: of us thought the Orioles should make a big play
- 17:57Speaker 1: for they didn't. Boston got him Rangers Suarez and Bradish
- 18:02Speaker 1: on Tuesday night in Boston. Time now for our Daily
- 18:11Speaker 1: Dinger is presented by fan Duel, and this is where
- 18:15Speaker 1: we kind of nominate an oil player to hit a
- 18:17Speaker 1: home run. You can play that through FanDuel. I think
- 18:21Speaker 1: Tyler O'Neal is not a bad pick right now. We
- 18:23Speaker 1: would have said that a couple of weeks ago. Certainly
- 18:25Speaker 1: not a couple of months ago. Listen to this stunning stat.
- 18:29Speaker 1: In April and May, he was OH for thirty four
- 18:32Speaker 1: against left handed pitching a donut. Now since late May,
- 18:38Speaker 1: his OPS is one point ninety seven. That is unbelievable.
- 18:43Speaker 1: OH for thirty four ten ninety seven. He's also an
- 18:48Speaker 1: eight thirty six career OPS at Fenway Park, where he's
- 18:51Speaker 1: got seventeen homers in sixty career games. And oh, by
- 18:54Speaker 1: the way, his July OPS overall against all pitching is
- 18:59Speaker 1: twelve sixty. Come out of nowhere to have a good
- 19:01Speaker 1: game last night again, and you can't take him out
- 19:05Speaker 1: now obviously with the left do we know he'll be
- 19:07Speaker 1: in there tonight, whether it's right field, DH whatever. It's
- 19:11Speaker 1: been fun to see and it's sort of this one
- 19:13Speaker 1: sort of did come out of nowhere with Tyler O'Neil.
- 19:16Speaker 2: Yeah, And so I love seeing guys that you know,
- 19:18Speaker 2: get off to a really bad start, a guy that
- 19:21Speaker 2: got a contract from the Warriors was expected to crush
- 19:24Speaker 2: lefty pitching and just really struggled early on. But he's
- 19:27Speaker 2: kind of stuck with this process. He's he's been working.
- 19:29Speaker 2: You could tell he's been working behind the scenes, and
- 19:32Speaker 2: all the coaching staff has talked about it multiple times
- 19:34Speaker 2: that he continues to put his work in and it's
- 19:37Speaker 2: paying off. And I think his uh one of his
- 19:39Speaker 2: biggest contributions has been his outfield defense and right field too.
- 19:42Speaker 2: He's made some unbelievable plays out there, and it's kind
- 19:45Speaker 2: of all coincided together. A lot of times. You see
- 19:47Speaker 2: that with players that kind of get struggle sometimes the
- 19:50Speaker 2: defense or you know, a good base running player, something
- 19:53Speaker 2: will kind of trigger everything else, and that's kind of
- 19:55Speaker 2: what I've seen happen. He's made a couple of really
- 19:57Speaker 2: nice plays in right field and now the bat's starting
- 19:59Speaker 2: to come and he's been crushing lefty pitching. So I
- 20:02Speaker 2: think it's a really good play for tonight. He's comfortable
- 20:04Speaker 2: at Fenway Park. He's played with the Red Sox before,
- 20:07Speaker 2: so that short porch and left field against the lefty
- 20:10Speaker 2: Tyler O'Neil is a really good pick.
- 20:13Speaker 4: Stee.
- 20:13Speaker 3: If you've given those numbers man captain obvious calling right
- 20:16Speaker 3: now that that's not a winning ball player. But when
- 20:19Speaker 3: you look over this stretch, Tyler O'Neill has helped them
- 20:23Speaker 3: win ball games. And you can go back over his
- 20:26Speaker 3: last twenty two games. At this point this is against
- 20:29Speaker 3: righty's end lefties. It's got a nine to thirty two OPS,
- 20:32Speaker 3: six doubles, four home runs in his last twenty two
- 20:36Speaker 3: games played. But Brad, I'm glad you pointed out the
- 20:39Speaker 3: defense man. How many diving catches have we seen from
- 20:43Speaker 3: Tyler O'Neill over the past couple of weeks. Obviously, the
- 20:46Speaker 3: fantastic throw home to get the runner in Houston, Samuel
- 20:50Speaker 3: Visio with a great tag, but the very next inning
- 20:54Speaker 3: he beat out an infield single on that where Jose
- 20:58Speaker 3: Altuve ended up fielding that ball. And last night, you know,
- 21:01Speaker 3: driving in Gunner Henderson to start that game in the
- 21:03Speaker 3: first inning, and gosh, he was this close away from
- 21:07Speaker 3: being the hero, driving in two runs in the ninth
- 21:10Speaker 3: inning to give the Orioles the lead. He's a confident
- 21:15Speaker 3: ballplayer right now, and you couldn't say that earlier on
- 21:18Speaker 3: in the season.
- 21:19Speaker 4: And I'm with you, Steve.
- 21:20Speaker 3: You got a lefty today, you got another lefty tomorrow.
- 21:24Speaker 4: He's gonna be He should be in the starting lineup
- 21:26Speaker 4: the rest of this series.
- 21:28Speaker 1: Yeah, no doubt. And that the ball he hit off Chapman,
- 21:30Speaker 1: by the way, was his fastest pitch of the inning.
- 21:34Speaker 1: Was the last one, and he squared it up. He
- 21:37Speaker 1: just almost got just enough to be a difference maker.
- 21:40Speaker 1: So we pick Toaler O'Neal for Daily Dingers presented by Fandel.
- 21:45Speaker 1: Head over to fandel dot com slash podcast to op
- 21:48Speaker 1: in for Daily Dingers and make your free pick on
- 21:50Speaker 1: who's hitting a homer, playball and swing for the fences
- 21:53Speaker 1: on Fandel. They're an official partner of Major League Baseball.
- 21:57Speaker 1: Catch your injuries for the Orioles man piling up here.
- 22:00Speaker 1: Adlie went to the i L with left wrist inflammation
- 22:03Speaker 1: on Monday and visioh is day to day with right
- 22:06Speaker 1: shoulder discomfort. Sam Huff has been catching Chadwick Trump was
- 22:11Speaker 1: called up Monday. Huff and Trump seemed to be the
- 22:14Speaker 1: two healthiest catchers at the moment. Brad, My question to
- 22:17Speaker 1: you as a pitcher is these guys obviously are not
- 22:20Speaker 1: regulars with the Orioles. What's it like working with a
- 22:23Speaker 1: catcher who's just thrown into things like Sam Huff in
- 22:27Speaker 1: recent days.
- 22:28Speaker 2: Yeah, it's you just got to be confidenting yourself. You
- 22:31Speaker 2: gotta you gotta have the extra conversations with these guys. Obviously,
- 22:34Speaker 2: Sam Huff is is a really good catcher. That's why
- 22:37Speaker 2: he's there. He's not there, he's you know, he's gonna
- 22:40Speaker 2: pop a home run every once in a while, but
- 22:42Speaker 2: he's he's there for his defense and he knows how
- 22:44Speaker 2: to call a game. So that's that gives confidence to
- 22:46Speaker 2: the pictures. They've worked with him a little bit. Chawick.
- 22:48Speaker 2: Trump just came over. I think he knows a couple
- 22:51Speaker 2: of these guys. I actually threw to him in my
- 22:52Speaker 2: last year in Triple A with the Braves. H great guy,
- 22:56Speaker 2: great guy to be around, and but you just got
- 22:58Speaker 2: to go out out of your way and have more
- 22:59Speaker 2: conversation with them. And when it comes down to it,
- 23:02Speaker 2: they're just kind of giving you suggestions. You have to
- 23:04Speaker 2: be more confident in your game plan then really kind
- 23:07Speaker 2: of going off with the catcher's giving you. So it's
- 23:10Speaker 2: just one of those things where you just have to
- 23:11Speaker 2: be more cognizant of if there's a certain pitch you
- 23:13Speaker 2: want to throw, you got to throw it. Because these
- 23:15Speaker 2: guys haven't been around all year, they haven't been around
- 23:17Speaker 2: the last couple of weeks. Maybe one of your pitch
- 23:19Speaker 2: is working better, Maybe you're working differently than what you
- 23:22Speaker 2: did last time. You saw these guys. So it's really
- 23:24Speaker 2: just about going out there and being confident in yourself,
- 23:27Speaker 2: and if you have to use the pitch on yourself,
- 23:29Speaker 2: you have to be the one going to your belt,
- 23:30Speaker 2: going to your glove, wherever your thing is, kind of
- 23:32Speaker 2: being the one setting the tone of what pitches you
- 23:34Speaker 2: want to throw. They'll give their suggestions. They have everything
- 23:37Speaker 2: that you know on the wristbands and they know where
- 23:39Speaker 2: to go against certain hitters. But at the end of
- 23:41Speaker 2: the day, you just have to go with what you
- 23:43Speaker 2: trust and just be confident when they're back there, and
- 23:46Speaker 2: then you'll get into a rhythm after an outing or two,
- 23:48Speaker 2: and then you can kind of work with each other.
- 23:49Speaker 2: But you just have to be real confident in yourself
- 23:52Speaker 2: and go out there with your game plan and attack
- 23:54Speaker 2: that way.
- 23:56Speaker 3: Bret, going back to Sunday, I think, look, you got
- 23:59Speaker 3: to Sam Huff. He got a credit, Brandon Young. But
- 24:02Speaker 3: how difficult of a situation was that where Samuel Bisaillo
- 24:06Speaker 3: started that game. You did not think Sam Huff was
- 24:08Speaker 3: coming in, and lo and behold, sam Huff was inserted
- 24:12Speaker 3: into that game in the second inning. How difficult is
- 24:15Speaker 3: it to make that mid game change.
- 24:18Speaker 2: Yeah, it's got to be tough for a starter, especially
- 24:20Speaker 2: because you have a full on game plan that they
- 24:23Speaker 2: go after every hitter. They have meetings before the game,
- 24:26Speaker 2: they have meetings before the series, so you kind of
- 24:28Speaker 2: had this whole game plan going and then, like you said,
- 24:30Speaker 2: in the second inning, Bam, it's flipped on its head. Obviously,
- 24:33Speaker 2: Sam Huff was probably there to get a little bit
- 24:36Speaker 2: of the background of what they were trying to do,
- 24:38Speaker 2: but to be inserted in the second inning like that,
- 24:40Speaker 2: that was really impressive for both brand and Young and
- 24:43Speaker 2: Sam Huff to be putting that game in the second
- 24:45Speaker 2: inning and to do what they did. So but I
- 24:47Speaker 2: think it goes back to just being Brandy Young just
- 24:49Speaker 2: being super confident right now. He knows what he wants
- 24:51Speaker 2: to do, and like I said, it's just more of
- 24:53Speaker 2: a him going to his belt saying what he wants
- 24:56Speaker 2: to throw, and then in between innings you get a
- 24:58Speaker 2: chance to kind of catch up see who's coming up
- 25:00Speaker 2: in the lineup. But it's definitely not an easy thing.
- 25:02Speaker 2: I think that's one of the things I was kind
- 25:03Speaker 2: of overlooked on Sunday a little just a little bit there,
- 25:06Speaker 2: because that is a difficult thing to be flown in
- 25:09Speaker 2: from Norfolk to night before. Who knows how much sleep
- 25:11Speaker 2: you got. You're kind of just thinking your emergency. You
- 25:13Speaker 2: have Adley who wasn't put on the IL yet, but
- 25:16Speaker 2: you know you might have to be put in the game,
- 25:18Speaker 2: and for him to go in that game and really
- 25:19Speaker 2: just call a great game was kudos to Hymn for
- 25:23Speaker 2: Brandy Young to really just stick into the game plan.
- 25:26Speaker 1: Yeah, Huff has done a nice job and a short
- 25:28Speaker 1: amount of time for the Oriole has been credit to
- 25:30Speaker 1: the ORG for finding him and keeping him around. And
- 25:33Speaker 1: some of these guys get DFA, then they come back
- 25:35Speaker 1: and they go to the miners and they come up.
- 25:37Speaker 1: It's just it's just kind of crazy all the things
- 25:40Speaker 1: they go through. But so you got to credit him
- 25:43Speaker 1: for doing his job and doing it well for the Orioles.
- 25:46Speaker 1: So last few nights we got a few more comments
- 25:49Speaker 1: coming up on Birdland Territory.
- 25:52Speaker 6: Big Bed Morning Show, Finny and Haney, Inside Access Live
- 25:57Speaker 6: on YouTube week days six till six, Search Baltimore one
- 26:01Speaker 6: O five seven the Fan, subscribe for Daily Short's right
- 26:04Speaker 6: to your Phone and never missed which you missed?
- 26:07Speaker 4: One O five seven the Fan.
- 26:10Speaker 1: So during the winter, Boston signed Ranger Suarez, free agent
- 26:14Speaker 1: who was with the Phillies previously five years, one hundred
- 26:16Speaker 1: and thirty million. Because I'm weird with stats man, I
- 26:20Speaker 1: happen to notice this. I don't know what makes me
- 26:22Speaker 1: notice stuff like this. Ranger Suarez has thrown ninety one
- 26:26Speaker 1: in the third innings this year. Brandon Young has thrown
- 26:29Speaker 1: ninety one in the third innings this year, identical to
- 26:33Speaker 1: the out Ranger Suarez, who's expected to be one of
- 26:37Speaker 1: the best pitchers in the league as a three fifteen
- 26:39Speaker 1: ERA and four wins. Brandon Young is a three twenty
- 26:43Speaker 1: five ERA and eight wins. Rangers got more impressive walk
- 26:47Speaker 1: rate strike out in a whip, but the Red Sox
- 26:50Speaker 1: are nine to eight in his seventeen starts and the
- 26:54Speaker 1: Oils are thirteen and three and Brandon's sixteen starts. So
- 26:58Speaker 1: Brandon Young is making much less money than Ranger Suarez, obviously,
- 27:03Speaker 1: but he's giving a similar performance, which no one would
- 27:07Speaker 1: have expected that. And so to me, it's just crazy
- 27:09Speaker 1: to look at the statue where you can compare. They've
- 27:12Speaker 1: thrown the exact number of dnings, so you can do
- 27:14Speaker 1: it straight across the board. Comparison and Ranger Suarez wins
- 27:18Speaker 1: that comparison, but Brandon Young is in the ballpark. I
- 27:23Speaker 1: just think that's pretty ch.
- 27:24Speaker 2: Yeah, it's to me baseball stats are are some of
- 27:27Speaker 2: the craziest, wildest things. Ever, how you can have these comparisons,
- 27:31Speaker 2: and it's that's what makes baseball so much fun. And
- 27:33Speaker 2: I think with Brandy Young, I mean, he's just done
- 27:36Speaker 2: such a good job of stepping up. If anybody in
- 27:38Speaker 2: the organization would have thought this going into the season,
- 27:41Speaker 2: I think you'd have to check them and see if
- 27:43Speaker 2: they were all right, because I just don't I just
- 27:45Speaker 2: don't think you could have. You could have been slated
- 27:47Speaker 2: him for a certain expectation. But like you said, Steve,
- 27:50Speaker 2: to compare to one hundred and thirty million dollars pitcher
- 27:53Speaker 2: is kind of crazy, and it's been. It's been awesome
- 27:55Speaker 2: to watch him pitch this year, and it just goes
- 27:57Speaker 2: to show you just never know what can happen in
- 27:59Speaker 2: a baseball season. There's still two months ago, so we'll
- 28:01Speaker 2: see what happens at the end with their comparison SATs.
- 28:03Speaker 2: But to hear those numbers together is pretty crazy, and
- 28:07Speaker 2: it's awesome for Brandon Young.
- 28:09Speaker 3: It's just been a season of these type of big surprises.
- 28:13Speaker 4: And Steve, you're on my show with Ken yesterday.
- 28:15Speaker 3: I thought you made a great point in saying all
- 28:18Speaker 3: those Orioles teams back in the day like that that
- 28:21Speaker 3: was the norm. You didn't know who was going to
- 28:23Speaker 3: come through on any given day. And you just look
- 28:25Speaker 3: at the numbers across the board. Look, Brandon Young is
- 28:28Speaker 3: firmly entrenched in this starting rotation moving forward, but he
- 28:32Speaker 3: was their number eight starter heading into the year. Jeremiah
- 28:36Speaker 3: Jackson and Leodi Taveres, they have two of the top
- 28:40Speaker 3: three batting averages with runners in scoring position on this
- 28:43Speaker 3: team this season. You think a Cam Sanders who came
- 28:46Speaker 3: up and got to win in a saving back to
- 28:48Speaker 3: back days and Christian and Carnowci owned Strand had a
- 28:52Speaker 3: homer yesterday at Femway Park. So there's been so many
- 28:56Speaker 3: of these really cool stories on this year's club.
- 29:00Speaker 1: I think you see any team that's doing well in baseball,
- 29:02Speaker 1: you're going to see that. I'm looking at Boston's lineup.
- 29:05Speaker 1: Who are some of these guys.
- 29:07Speaker 2: Who is this.
- 29:08Speaker 1: Guy pitching Wednesday night? I mean, who are these guys
- 29:11Speaker 1: that are in brun shocks? Are bringing in bullpen guys
- 29:13Speaker 1: throwing ninety nine you have hardly ever heard of, and
- 29:17Speaker 1: so baseball, man, it's just it's the land of opportunity
- 29:20Speaker 1: worldwide really, not just the United States obviously, and that's
- 29:25Speaker 1: kind of been a thing to him over the years.
- 29:27Speaker 1: That was a I think when I was a kid
- 29:29Speaker 1: in my teens, we took pride in the fact that
- 29:32Speaker 1: we're gonna beat your team with guys you've never even
- 29:34Speaker 1: heard of. Kiko Garcia is going to get a two
- 29:37Speaker 1: run double tonight to beat the Yankees, and oriol fans
- 29:39Speaker 1: are going to revel in that. And so I think
- 29:42Speaker 1: we do now when we see Rico Garcia do what
- 29:45Speaker 1: he did earlier and some of that, and Brad you remark, now,
- 29:48Speaker 1: that's one of the coolest things you enjoyed as a player,
- 29:50Speaker 1: seeing these guys that came out of nowhere, and maybe
- 29:53Speaker 1: you were sort of one once yourself, are expecting you
- 29:56Speaker 1: to do what you did for the Orioles back in
- 29:58Speaker 1: the day, and you did it.
- 30:00Speaker 2: Yeah, And it's just all about getting opportunities to run
- 30:03Speaker 2: with it. It's like when it comes to being a player,
- 30:06Speaker 2: you just you never know when your opportunity is gonna come.
- 30:08Speaker 2: It could be the beginning of your career. It could
- 30:10Speaker 2: be the middle, it could be towards the end, and
- 30:11Speaker 2: whenever that opportunity comes, you just got to make the
- 30:14Speaker 2: most of it. It might not be this long, eight, ten, eleven,
- 30:17Speaker 2: fifteen year career, but it could be a three year
- 30:19Speaker 2: stretch where you're a main player for a team and
- 30:21Speaker 2: guys come out of nowhere and off the top of
- 30:24Speaker 2: my head right now, it's I'm struggling thinking the names, but.
- 30:26Speaker 4: I know there was many. Steve Pierce is the biggest one. Yeah,
- 30:32Speaker 4: exactly World Series big.
- 30:35Speaker 2: Yeah name that year Chris Davis goes out and Steve
- 30:38Speaker 2: Pierce is our starting first basement of the playoffs and
- 30:40Speaker 2: he's one of our best players during that. It's just
- 30:42Speaker 2: I love those kinds of teams. Being part of them
- 30:44Speaker 2: is awesome because everybody really feels like they have a piece.
- 30:47Speaker 2: When you're on some teams where it's three superstars kind
- 30:50Speaker 2: of doing everything and everyone else is just really under
- 30:52Speaker 2: the radar, it's just kind of the dynamic is just
- 30:55Speaker 2: different than when you're on a team that really feels
- 30:57Speaker 2: like everybody's together, everyone's got to shot, and that's really
- 31:01Speaker 2: how this team feels. There's I mean, this depth that
- 31:03Speaker 2: they're showing now is just I mean, it's unprecedented how
- 31:06Speaker 2: many guys have had to come up and not just
- 31:09Speaker 2: play a role, but be starters and really contribute for
- 31:13Speaker 2: this team. And they've all really stepped up in one
- 31:15Speaker 2: way or another, whether it's been for a month, whether
- 31:17Speaker 2: when it's been for six weeks, whether it's been for
- 31:19Speaker 2: the whole season. At this point, it's been fun to
- 31:21Speaker 2: see these guys all come in and step up and
- 31:24Speaker 2: really keep this team afloat.
- 31:25Speaker 1: At this point, well, it's gonna be fascinating to see
- 31:28Speaker 1: where this series goes from here. Had the Orioles pull
- 31:31Speaker 1: that out, we have been saying, unbelievable. They have made
- 31:34Speaker 1: four errors. They won, and guys, they were that close
- 31:37Speaker 1: to doing it, and I was expecting a Sam huff
- 31:40Speaker 1: sack fly to be the difference. You know, in the
- 31:42Speaker 1: ninth inning, he'd get up in a tie game, they
- 31:44Speaker 1: need a fly ball, he gets it, they win seven
- 31:46Speaker 1: to six. It didn't happen, So let's see what happens
- 31:49Speaker 1: the rest of the way. And thanks for joining us today.
