- 1:21As I mentioned, Elliot Lewis held down the Casebook of Gregory Hood through the
- 1:27nineteen forty eight forty nine season, returning going off to do voyage at the
- 1:34Scarlet Queen in the middle of this. The last episode that the Digital Laftp
- 1:42digitaldalaftp dot com has was from March twenty ninth of nineteen forty nine. Then
- 1:51we have the show moving to ABC, and not a whole lot is known
- 1:57about it in the log for the ABC run is kind of sketchy. Well,
- 2:01Digital Deli FTP has a first recorded ABC episode of January fourth, nineteen
- 2:07fifty Today's program is from that ABC air on. It's from October fifteenth of
- 2:15nineteen forty nine, and that kind of makes sense that a show would start
- 2:20in the fall, even if the earliest episode date that could be found was
- 2:23from January. In the Daily Mail listings, first star of the Casebook of
- 2:31Gregory Hood, and certainly not the last, was Jackson Beck, who was
- 2:38really known for his announcing prowess, particularly on the Adventures of Superman, but
- 2:44certainly on some other series as well. He had also played file events in
- 2:49the ZIV syndicated version of those stories, so I guess we're playing a radio
- 2:55detective. Was somewhat of unnatural. And this is actually the the only example
- 3:02of ABC's version of the Casebook of Gregory Hood I haven't been able to find,
- 3:07and I just found that this year, so you may not have heard
- 3:12it before, but let's go ahead and take a lesson from October fifteenth of
- 3:16nineteen forty nine Carnival of Death, The Casebook of Gregory Hood, presented by
- 3:28the American Broadcasting Company. His office is high in the tower of a skyscraper
- 3:43overlooking San Francisco Bay. His name is Gregory Hood. By day, president
- 3:49of the Hood Importing Company, by night, criminologist and man about town.
- 3:54To Night's story from out of his casebook, The Carnival of Death. Good
- 4:03evening, ladies and gentlemen, This is Gregory Hood. Let's understand this from
- 4:09the start. I'm not a playboy. But when a hot blonde who's due
- 4:13to inherit a cool million suddenly writes me be sociable, Greg, drop around
- 4:17for a drink. It's three to one, I'll drop around. That's how
- 4:23I got involved with Leora Thorne. I was in my office with Sanderson Taylor,
- 4:28my attorney knows to the grindstone, sticking to business, when along came
- 4:31Leora's impaty. Excuse me, Sandy, but this letter's been lying on my
- 4:36desk all day. Ah, perfume, Dear Greg, Just because an old
- 4:43flame has got hisself happily married, that's no reason to cross her off your
- 4:46book. How's about dropping around for a drink Tomorrow afternoon. I want you
- 4:50to meet Bradley, my new husband. You like you from quite a lady,
- 4:56Greg, judging by your smile. Remember Leora Littleton, Now you are
- 5:00a thorn. Oh, the one who's coming into old Colonel Littleton's money one
- 5:03million dollars next year. She wants me to drop over this afternoon. What
- 5:09for that's for, aud lang xyon. I guess probably getting a big cocktail
- 5:12party. Has she still got that big estate on shore drive, h swimming
- 5:15pool and all the trimmings. Oh, take my advice and you'll stay put.
- 5:21I'm sort of curious to see where you are again. It's been a
- 5:26whole year now, Greg, don't get involved. Nonsense. The gal's happily
- 5:30married, she says. So. Haven't you ever noticed, Greg that your
- 5:34ex girlfriends never invite you to their homes less there's trouble brewing. Oh,
- 5:42Sanderson, you're asthenic. I'll be back later to finish those contracts with you.
- 5:46Greg. I'm warning you. My attorney, Sanderson Taylor is heap smart
- 5:58engine. I should have avoided that perfumed billy doo like rat poison, because
- 6:02when I got to Leora's there wasn't any party. There wasn't so much as
- 6:05a friendly Greg. How have you been? Instead? Greg? You're just
- 6:10in time? Hey, what gives? This is Bratt my husband. I'm
- 6:13glad to know you, mister Hood. I've been meaning to drop around ever
- 6:15since I read about you two getting married. Chat. Go to that small
- 6:17room over there and listen, listen to everything that's Wait a minute. All
- 6:23I came for was a nice sociable visas Gig, I need you. I'm
- 6:26desperate. That's right, mister Hood, We're both desperate. Before I could
- 6:33say I'm booked for this waltz, thank you and walk out, they'd pushed
- 6:38me into a small powder room. I watched them go into the library.
- 6:41Right alongside, I watched the butler usher in a little runt who wore a
- 6:45face like a Doc's unt plus a twitch, an unsavory type. I listened
- 6:49to Doc o'face talking to Leora and Brad. My boss is to tell you
- 6:55an old Chinese proverb, Confucius say a welshed, I'm not Welsh free,
- 7:01grand Wight. I don't owe him a penny? What about the iou The
- 7:04game was crooked. I only signed it to get out of the place better
- 7:08paid Gurley to stay out of a cough. Say, look, whoever you
- 7:12are, have a heart. That crap game was rigged. My wife was
- 7:15cheated into losing all that money. Please, I need time. Tell your
- 7:18boss to give me time. A week from today? My boss says,
- 7:21what about a week from today? That's how long you get all else?
- 7:29Gurley? That chess here yours won't look so pretty with a bullet near pulstreak.
- 7:39What am I going to do? You've simply got to pay off.
- 7:44I will sell your jewelry, re rentless house, anything, just so your
- 7:48life isn't in dangerous Please, please preciously. Now, look you two.
- 7:54You roped me into this, and you'd better give me the low down.
- 7:57Great, you heard that, little man. Where have you been gambling?
- 8:01Li Aora? Oh? The Pacific Playland? Pacific Playland, that's an amusement
- 8:05park. I beg Leora to stay away. Didn't drop three thousand on ping
- 8:09pong and darts, did you? There's a floating crap game out there.
- 8:13People never tell me these things. Who runs it? I don't know his
- 8:16name. They just call him the boss. Rigged dice game with a honey
- 8:20Carnival Leora, have you lost your senses? I can't explain it. Greg.
- 8:28Every now and then I get this itch to gamble, it just grabs
- 8:31hold of me. And well, this time I got in too deep.
- 8:35I tried to stop her. Mister Hood hmm, Well, my advice is
- 8:39square up. I didn't like the looks of Jojo the dog faced messenger boy.
- 8:43I can't pay Greg what. I haven't the money, Leora Littleton n
- 8:48g on the credit. I don't come into the bulk of grandfather's estate for
- 8:50another year. You know that right now, I'm in dead all over town.
- 8:54Darling. We'll sell things off. It's the only way. You're right,
- 8:58Thorn. Take that riskwatch you're wearing, for instance, what about it?
- 9:01I had lots of fine Swiss watches at the Hood importing company, but
- 9:05nothing that unusual. I've never seen a heart shaped design like that. I
- 9:09hadn't made like a heart because I gave it bread. That's a wedding press.
- 9:13Well that watch alone at some high class hokshow. No, I can't
- 9:15let bad part with you the pressure slam for your own safety and for my
- 9:18peace of mind. Your husband's very sensible. Don't risk your life, li
- 9:22Aura, Well, then help me, Greg find out who's up to me.
- 9:24Well, I'll think it over. Oh you were the one person,
- 9:28Greg, on you I could turn to you help us, mister Hood.
- 9:31You will never find two people more grateful. Well, I have to go
- 9:33now, but you'll be hearing from me, Leora. I'll show you to
- 9:37the dor mister Hood this way. I'm so worried about it, mister Hood.
- 9:43Naturally, sometimes I wish Leora didn't have all this. She's a swell
- 9:48kid. He just needs taken care of and doing my best. You know,
- 9:52I think you are. I think you have a pretty level head on
- 9:54your shoulders. Thanks. I'm so crazy about her. A lot of folks
- 9:58probably think I just married her for the money. Anybody can see that isn't
- 10:01the case. Well, chin up, don't let the order get too upset.
- 10:07Good meeting you, Thorne, grand meeting you. Please help us out
- 10:11of this mess. Well, Greg, how was Leora's cocktail party? What
- 10:24cocktail? P ah? I thought? So she only got you out there
- 10:30or rope you into something. Put your hat on, mister Taylor. Where
- 10:33going places? What? What? What about these business contracts they'll keep?
- 10:37We're going to Pacific Playland, the amusement park. What goes on out there,
- 10:41it seems isn't so amusing? What did you find out, Greg,
- 11:00I've been pumping some of the concession owners. Do they know anything about a
- 11:03floating gambling game? They know they're keeping Mum? What about the man they
- 11:07called the boss? Wouldn't learn a thing? Oh? What about the little
- 11:11man who threatened the aura? Doc Oface? Yes he works out here.
- 11:15They recognized my description of him. Who is He names Benny Baker, known
- 11:18as hot Licks Baker. Hot Licks is to be a trap drummer until he
- 11:22found an easier pitch. He sounds like a charming character. They tell me.
- 11:26He works at one of the concessions. Some daredevil trapez act, the
- 11:31incomparable Florette whatever that? Yes, it's over there. You see that neon
- 11:35sign hanging over that big ten. Oh come on, let's go visiting in
- 11:56incomfortable, Watch your death divinely through the Yeah, reppy that from the century
- 12:03at two hundred feet with perfect precision. A little lady will the five remedy
- 12:09my two tickets, Sandy, Greg? Yeah, that Barker, what about
- 12:13it? I have a feeling he's looking at us lor against giving his customers
- 12:18the once over. No, it's just that well, he kind of nodded
- 12:20when he spotted you, as if look out, Greg, that's the unsign's
- 12:24coming loose, break it out of the way. Are you all right,
- 12:33Greg? Me sure, Sandy? Oh buggy, thank you. Push.
- 12:37I had heart failure. You were standing right under it. If you had
- 12:41heart nue how that I could feel the breezes that sign went past me.
- 12:43Everybody, okay out there, it will happened well under the break clean up
- 12:48on a TV. I mean time to step up playing gents. He threw
- 12:52that hurt being comfortable. Hurry, hurry, Greg. That was not an
- 12:58accident, was Sandy? The sign just tore loose when you were directly under
- 13:03it. I think somebody wanted to kill you. Nonsense, he's right,
- 13:05mister hood huh, I said, your friend is right two hundred percent.
- 13:16She was best in a kind of spangled costume, a carnival performer. She
- 13:20inched her way to us through the crowd. She pulled Sandy and me over
- 13:24on the one side and talked in quick whispers as if there wasn't much time.
- 13:28He knows you're after it? Who does the boss? The man I
- 13:31worked was what does he look like? Where's he hang out? What's it
- 13:33worth to you, mister hood, to find out who's threatening? The odd
- 13:37thought? Suppose you tell us first who you are? What's a dip?
- 13:39Who I am? Make with the cash offer and you'll get what you really
- 13:41want to know. Fathy, Oh chicken seed, mister Hood, one hundred,
- 13:46come again, double enoughing, heman ain't show the buck. You come
- 13:50in, you will see. That's I gotta go in the town. Yeah,
- 13:56yeah, sixty far the week. All right, you went, Flaret,
- 13:58two hundre of dollars. Let's have it. Where can I find this
- 14:01man? They call the boss? But he's always at the same place you'll
- 14:03find. Oh look, I ain't got time to talk now, why not
- 14:07wait? Come back here? After my e beat me back at the tent
- 14:09in my dressroom, we bought our tickets. Standing and Iron followed the crowd
- 14:18into the Big ten. Pretty soon the girl appeared and climbed a rope ladder
- 14:22one hundred feet up at least four times a day she did this stuff.
- 14:26You must have had nerves of iron, lady. Then gentleman without net,
- 14:46without tavices, all right, with an alp the all the triple all in
- 14:52the air. With PERV timing, you will see her move from one p
- 15:00to the other. One mistake, one mistake, ladies and gentlemen, we'll
- 15:07mean instant. I don't get it, Greg, get what well? A
- 15:35trappee's artist, a hockey tom character. What possible connection can she have with
- 15:41a girl like le Aura Thorne? That is what we're going to pay her
- 15:43two hundred dollars to find out. Are you ready, miss lutt Oh?
- 15:50Ready? Miss I'll take her her to the dressing room. She'll never live
- 16:08after that boy. Let's get out of his sandy. Keep your seat.
- 16:14An accident, an accident, He's get your seat. Excuse us, please,
- 16:19we have to get through. Keep going, Greg right behind you this
- 16:22time. I'll bet my most sincere necktie on a sandy. That was deliberate.
- 16:26What did you notice the fellow who was beating the temple for her with
- 16:29a little fellow with the drum. Huh, yes, what about it?
- 16:32He took a powder as soon as she missed that second trefez. Well,
- 16:34he was Benny Baker, the man who went to see the orthon. That's
- 16:38right, and this was murder, pal deliberate murder in her dressing room.
- 16:52The incomparable Florett was dying a death I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy.
- 16:57We pushed our way through before anybody could stop us. An ambulance, in
- 17:02turn, was already there, shaking his head. The policeman was there too,
- 17:07making duck tracks in his notebook. I could see what was in the
- 17:11wind when I heard the copper say, up on an shutcase. Looks like
- 17:15just an accident. We may as well get out of here, Greg,
- 17:18Not yet, Sandy, it's too late. The girl won't be able to
- 17:21talk to us. Maybe she will with her eyes, her eyes, she's
- 17:25staring at us. I think she wants us to come closer. Can you
- 17:30speak, Florette, try, try hard? Who is he? This boss
- 17:38person, the man who made them do this to you? Greg? It's
- 17:42no you wait wait, she's moving her lips. What's she's saying? Something
- 17:51about death, something about a death ride. Listen, right, come on,
- 18:03Gregy, she's dead. Well we didn't get very far, did we,
- 18:22Not yet? But you may quote me as saying, I'm hope,
- 18:26oh, Greg, for Pete's safe. What call Leora Thorn? Tell her
- 18:30you're washing her hands of this? Not a chance, but We have work
- 18:34to do back at the office, but this is ridiculous trapesing around an amusement
- 18:40park. I'm going to find out who the gentleman known as the Boss is.
- 18:45He's responsible for Florette's murder. What makes you so sure that Florette was
- 18:48murdered? You'll see right now, I'm wondering what she meant by that death
- 18:56right death Rive stuff she may have been referring to Leora would be But on
- 19:02the other hand, hey, what down there on the midway and colored lights
- 19:06a mile high the death Rive twenty five sets amusement concession. Well, things
- 19:15are adding up. Come on. We ran down the midway, past the
- 19:25bingo joints and frozen custard stands were only two bits. The death Ride looked
- 19:30entertaining enough. It was a long tunnel filled with water, flat bottomed boats
- 19:36chained together took you on a dark and dismal voyage. But we didn't go
- 19:41on it, not yet. We didn't because just as we got there.
- 19:45What's the matter? Do you see what I saw over there? The ticket
- 19:48bill? He was buying a ticket on the death Ride. Then he spotted
- 19:51us and ducked who Benny Baker? There he goes up that Dolley. Wait,
- 19:53handy, we can collar off. I'm trying up all right, slow
- 20:00up, figure into the line, hockey. Okay, okay, you're out
- 20:04of training, hot legs. It's the life you lead. Who do you
- 20:07want? Call him? Sandy? Let me alone by the trick, hot
- 20:11legs? Who put you up to it? After what Lorett's bellyflop? How's
- 20:14an act slight correction? A murder? You're wacky? Listen, Benny,
- 20:18I know how trope artists work. They practice a certain beat, delivery,
- 20:21muscle is adjusted to it. When that beat has changed, even by a
- 20:23split second. Oh, that's how he did it. That's how he did
- 20:26it by changing the drum beat. A couple of Waisenheimers. We'll try and
- 20:30pin something on me. We both heard that drums. Oh did a hundred
- 20:33other people in that audience. You cooked, Benny? Unless you talk,
- 20:37who put you up to it? I suppose I sing? What? Then?
- 20:41Do you? Yeah? I don't do business with rats, Benny.
- 20:45Here's what I dout it out. I'm sick. Who's the man that hires
- 20:52you? Start singing? Sorry? Horror stop. I figure he's a middle
- 20:59aged guy, maybe kind of fat, maybe, judging by his voice,
- 21:02I have actually seen him. But he paid you to threaten mister and missus
- 21:04Thorn and to take care of Florette. Yeah, yeah, only I never
- 21:07actually seen him. Where is his gambling place located? He ain't the gambler,
- 21:11He ain't the guy he or lost him money to. No, he's
- 21:14only using that, see to pull some other racket on mister missus Thorn.
- 21:18Some other racket what kind? Don't ask me. I just follow orders.
- 21:22Oh how if you've never seen the man? The boss gives me orders on
- 21:23the phone, how does he pay you off? And he meets me now
- 21:26then? But always in the darkness, in the darkness, Oh, Gregg,
- 21:30he's lying to it. I ain't. I asked where? I ain't
- 21:33over there where I'm pointing. That's where he meets me on the death ride.
- 21:37Yeah, the last boat. You believe him, Greg, m could
- 21:41be remember the girl's dying words to us? Yeah? I think he's telling
- 21:48the truth. What are you going to do to me, mister till the
- 21:51police take over? I'm leaving you in the capable hands of mister Taylor.
- 21:53Here, Greig, where are you off to? A sudden end has come
- 21:57over mis Sanderson tried one of those amusement rides since I was a small boy.
- 22:03You're going on the death ride. If anybody wants me, I'll be
- 22:07in the last boat. Keeping a date. In the darkness of the tunnel,
- 22:19I strayed over to the ticket booth and put down my quarter. It
- 22:25was past midnight now and I was the only customer. I waited by the
- 22:29entrance gates. The string of tiny boats emerged from the tunnel, slowed up,
- 22:37disgorged a load of giggling bobby sockss. Then it was my turn.
- 22:42I asked the old geezer who was in charge, mind if I ride in
- 22:47the last one quite anywhere as you please, Richterelle. The death ride got
- 22:52under way, with yours truly as the only passenger. Suddenly I felt lonely,
- 23:00as if I didn't have a friend in the world. The boats headed
- 23:04into the long black tunnel. I couldn't see my hand two inches in front
- 23:11of my face. In the inky blackness, I lost all sense of direction.
- 23:15I felt stifled, beads of perspiration collected on my forehead. But so
- 23:21far no fellow passenger. You know that feeling you get in a dark room,
- 23:29that a stranger is right alongside you. Well, Suddenly I knew I
- 23:33could sense him sitting behind me in that last boat. I waited for him
- 23:37to speak, but all I could hear was the water in that tunnel and
- 23:41his watch, the ticking of his watch. I remember how it pichoed.
- 23:48Finally, when he talked, his voice was muffled. When I answered,
- 23:52I tried to sound like mister Benny Hotlick's duckle face. Bigger bet you,
- 23:59Benny, Yeah, take care of Florette. Yeah, good boy, got
- 24:07another job for you, Penny, okay, up near Tahoe's gonna be an
- 24:14accident up there tomorra morning. What kind of accident? Fallen rocks? Automobile's
- 24:22gonna get out of control? Will someone get killed? A girl? Suddenly
- 24:30a shaft of light. There must have been a torn place in the canvas
- 24:33that lined the tunnel. Suddenly he must have seen that I wasn't Benny.
- 24:34Because I couldn't turn around. His hands were on my throat. I still
- 24:41couldn't see who he was, and the hands kept gripping tighter tighter, and
- 24:45then roman candles started shooting off in my break. One fires danced before my
- 24:49eyes, and then my black douse song. Here's where you get off on
- 25:00my old fade of water. But enough ground here, Greg, take it
- 25:17easy, old man, my throat just lie on that bench from where'd you
- 25:22find me? Sandy on the death ride, floating face down? Deserve a
- 25:27Carnadian metal for life saving? How come such perfect timing? Well he got
- 25:33away, Baker. I was running after him. Just as we passed the
- 25:37death ride. I saw a passenger climbing out of the last boat. It
- 25:41wasn't you, and I got worried that passenger what did he look like?
- 25:45I didn't wait to see. I grabbed a flashlight from the old man and
- 25:48went slashing into the tunnel to find you. I never saw that other passenger
- 25:52either, dark that was the boss, Yes, and the idea of his
- 25:57identity. His hands suddenly sat Yes. I just remember that follows hands has
- 26:03left wrist. What never mind, it'll keep We better get after Benny Baker.
- 26:07I've learned his professional killer with another job on tap for tomorrow morning.
- 26:10Oh and I let him get away. Come on, we've got to stop
- 26:12him. What are you stopping for? Greg? We won't have to look
- 26:22any further from mister Benny. Hotlake's Baker where I don't see him? Look
- 26:29now, do you see him where you're appointing? Yes? That concession over
- 26:34there, killbut's waxworks museum. Those figures on display outside. Look at those
- 26:41wax figures. Oh oh, Craig, how fantastic? Fantastic was the word?
- 26:55All right? Three of them standing upright and motionless, Napoleon, Mary,
- 27:00Queen of Scott's, holding her head in her hands, and Jack the
- 27:04Ripper, all built of wax. Alongside, slumped over and equally motionless was
- 27:12Benny Baker. They made a lovely force that green spotlight on them. It
- 27:19almost swear that Benny was a wax figure too. Yeah, except for the
- 27:25bullet hole and the blood Sandy. Let's get back to the car there,
- 27:40Craig, where are you driving to? You'll see this isn't the direction to
- 27:45my house. I'm not taking you home, pal. Oh, Now see
- 27:48here, Greig, Enough is enough. I've got a home and a company
- 27:52rest mattress waiting for me, yes, and a wife who's probably ready to
- 27:57divorce me, was staying out all night. Here we are Leona Thorn's house.
- 28:17I know it's late Liora, but I've got to see you this is
- 28:21Sandy Taylor my attorney? How did you do come into the library, Leora?
- 28:23I want to talk to you. I'll wait out here in the hall.
- 28:30Yes, Greg, are you by any chance planning an auto trip?
- 28:33How did you know? A little? Bertie told me in the morning Brad
- 28:37and I driving out of town for the weekend to Lakewell, who told you
- 28:41you're not going? Lia? But Greg, Gret and I is off for
- 28:45a very simple reason. If you value your life, Greg, what are
- 28:51you talking about? Bad darling? You better come in and listen to this
- 28:56all right. I woke up as I heard you going downstairs. Precious Gregg
- 29:00says that we caught off our trip to Tahoe. Oh why's that? Mister
- 29:03hood falling rocks? What? There's to be an accident on that mountain road
- 29:07to Leora's lodge. Leora is scheduled to be a corpse quick You mean they
- 29:14actually kill her because of that gambling debt. That petty crap game operator hasn't
- 29:18been threatening Leora at all. That somebody who figures this is a perfect time
- 29:21to put you in a nice marble mausoleum while he can use that gambling that
- 29:26is a cover up. Why haven't any enemy. Su're absolutely sure of this,
- 29:30mister Hood. I've met the gentleman in question. You've seen him.
- 29:33I didn't say i'd seen him. We met in the darkness. He tried
- 29:37to kill me. Oh, he's a bad boy. He had two confederates
- 29:41working with him. When they talked too much, he put them both out
- 29:44of the way. It sounds so fantastic, guy, Laura's right, mister
- 29:49Hood like a bad movie. You don't care for melodramatic doings, Athon,
- 29:55Oh, I guess I'm just not used to them. You like things to
- 29:57be calm and serene. Yes, I guess you'd call me the matter of
- 30:02fact type. Uh, tell me something, Thorn, Yes, don't you
- 30:07ever get tired? I'm tired of what of playing cat and mousiad? He
- 30:12knows you love him now, or he knows he's mentioned in your will.
- 30:15He also knows how changeable you are, and he'd rather be a rich widower
- 30:18than a poor ex husband. Get up, I'm not listening bad. I'm
- 30:21just not sure. We used to working carnivals in the old days, didn't
- 30:22you, Thorn? With Lorett and Fenny, you knew they could be hired
- 30:26for a price. Say these things. That's right, Thorn, don't let
- 30:29me say them. Okay, that is how you want it. Stand up
- 30:34your too, precious, Lamb. No one's told me you die for me.
- 30:38Here's your big chance. See he's right, you are too changeable,
- 30:44precious. If you're getting tired of me one of these fine days, we
- 30:48mustn't have that. What what are you gonna do? And they shot what
- 30:52I start? Okay, Sandy, you can come in now, watch out,
- 30:56Sandy, Okay, shot with what prop back? Your dirty got him?
- 31:06All right? You're coming quietly to the police and we play more patty
- 31:10Cake? How come I knew it was you? Ever since that excursion on
- 31:15the death right. Huh, say goodbye to your wife. Goodbye, preshous
- 31:22Lamb. I'll take off the wristwatch and give it to him. But your
- 31:25love gift to him is what put me on to him in the darkness.
- 31:27Thrm. It was like an engraved calling guard, a wristwatch, heart shaped,
- 31:33extremely unusual, and you forgot all about the luminous dial. You have
- 31:51heard. The Carnival of Death, an adventure from the case book of Gregory
- 31:56Hood, written this week by Jerome d Ross, directed by Martin Andrews and
- 32:00produced by Frank Cooper Associates. Listen again next week at the same time over
- 32:07this ABC station for the story of the Mutton Jade Buddha, another adventure from
- 32:13the casebook of Gregory Hood. This is ABC, the American Broadcasting Company,
- 32:34Welcome Back. I was impressed by the sound quality of the program. I
- 32:40wish it had been a better episode. The music almost seemed overpowering at times.
- 32:46I didn't like this version of Sanderson Taylor, and the plot wasn't all
- 32:51that great. Plus Gregg seemed to get a little too tough. But I
- 32:55did like Jackson Barracks overall portrayal. It was very strong, I think,
- 33:04much stronger than he was on File of Vents. I never quite cared for
- 33:10that show because he just seemed a bit off and was really hard to enjoy
- 33:16him on File of Vents. But I thought he brought a lot of passion
- 33:21and interest to the way he did Gregory Hood. And so this may have
- 33:27been an off episode, but it was ABC, and ABC's production values at
- 33:31this point were not did not have that great of reputation. What little I've
- 33:37been able to garner about the rest of the series run is what I get
- 33:42from the Digital la FDP's log on this and by March fifteenth of nineteen fifty
- 33:49Martin Gable had taken over as Gregory Hood and Paul McGrath would also take a
- 33:54run at the role, and the series would go off the air some time
- 34:00prior to October of nineteen fifty one, when it would be brought back for
- 34:05two weeks with George Petrie, who we've heard as the amazing mister Malone.
- 34:13And we also heard and call the Police taking over the role of Gregory Hood,
- 34:20which is digital LAFDP notes it's slightly ironic given who actually sponsored the show.
- 34:27Well, I always hope for lost episodes of shows to come forward.
- 34:30I'll be honest that I would much rather we find somebody find more Gil Gordon
- 34:37and Elliott Lewis episodes rather than more of the ABC episodes. But whatever they
- 34:45find, I'll take it. Well, We're going to bring you another AB
- 34:47show C show next week, but this one is one that has a lot
- 34:52of fans and is the epitome of tough guy radio Pat Noovac for Hire,
- 34:59so be sure and listen. Coming next Tuesday, Pat Novak for Hire,
- 35:05and be sure and listen. Tomorrow for murder My Suite. In the meantime,
