- 0:19SPEAKER_01: Vinny.
- 0:19SPEAKER_01: Our good mate Vinny is back in the house.
- 0:21SPEAKER_01: I don't know a man named Vincent, actually.
- 0:23SPEAKER_01: Um I haven't unlocked that character yet.
- 0:26SPEAKER_01: We've got a mutual friend who has a friend named Vinny.
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: Oh, we do have a mutual friend with a mutual friend who has a mutual friend named Vincent.
- 0:33SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 0:34SPEAKER_01: But anyway, that's neither he nor there, Sam, because our Vinny is welcoming to all.
- 0:37SPEAKER_01: Dive Bar.
- 0:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah, Vinny's Dive Bar.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: Vinny's Dive Bar.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: Is that still a thing?
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: I don't know, actually.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: Doesn't matter, because we're here to talk about DMAs, Maxwell.
- 0:45SPEAKER_01: Mate.
- 0:46SPEAKER_01: D more like D's MA's, am I right, Sam?
- 0:48SPEAKER_01: No, I don't know either.
- 0:49SPEAKER_01: No, yeah, probably not.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah, cool.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: Um, you've given me bulk homework for this week, Maxwell.
- 0:53SPEAKER_01: I did.
- 0:54SPEAKER_01: I've in for the listeners who listened to uh vinyl club last week, I have revised this off air uh for Sam.
- 1:02SPEAKER_01: I made it slightly easier after that I gave him like 25 songs.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: Two albums.
- 1:06SPEAKER_01: So I told him you could have one album plus two songs.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it was certainly like you got a new book in there.
- 1:11SPEAKER_01: I do have a new book.
- 1:11SPEAKER_01: I'll actually about that soon because that's actually I will talk, definitely talk to you about that soon because that's an interesting note.
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: Oh, there's a there's we're going to something that this week about that, aren't we?
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: We yeah, we'll talk about that.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: We'll talk we'll take that offline.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: We'll take that offline.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: Yes, Maxwell, you gave me DMA's new album, self-titled, called DMAs.
- 1:31SPEAKER_01: Whoa, that's D Amazing, Sam.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: But first you th uh well, because we talked to Mason on the show a couple of weeks ago and he talked about how it's a bit of a return to Hill's End and early DMAs.
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: So you said, Well, you should listen to both albums, dude.
- 1:45SPEAKER_01: I didn't give you two albums, I gave you the album and the EP.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:48SPEAKER_01: You've not listened to the EP, have you?
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: I couldn't find it on Spotify.
- 1:51SPEAKER_01: Really?
- 1:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:51SPEAKER_01: Interesting.
- 1:52SPEAKER_01: Okay, that's fine.
- 1:52SPEAKER_01: So I just listened to the first album.
- 1:54SPEAKER_01: We were wow, bold.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: But okay, we're here now.
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: And watch me find the EP straight away now that I'm on my laptop.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: It's just called DMAs.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but I did that and then I was listening to the new album, wasn't I?
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: That's fine.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: Let's we can work with delete.
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: You know what?
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: We can work with let me let me cook.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they say you've got to break a few eggs to make an omelet.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I'm here with a steak knife, and Max is going, no, no, I'll cut your steak.
- 2:19SPEAKER_01: Like, let me do it.
- 2:21SPEAKER_01: Dad! We've got to make an omelet, and we're like, we've got to break a few pans to make an omelet.
- 2:28SPEAKER_01: But anyway, we're here now, Sam.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: But you're breaking the pans, and I'm here with the eggs.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: I'm just watching you break a pants.
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: But also, for some reason, one of them's an ostrich egg.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: And a dinosaur egg that I pulled from the South Bank Museum.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: No, look, obviously, when we talked to Mason, he referenced Hill's End a lot.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: So I went back and sort of trawled through the different sounds on the first album.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: And obviously, you've got songs like Lay Down, Delete, which have become, I guess, um, fixtures in DMA's live set.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: A lot of people think of those songs still when they think of DMAs.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: So I went back through and sort of skimmed through it and tried to piece together, I guess, the sonic influence that the new album has.
- 3:09SPEAKER_00: So going through the album, you've got songs like Lay Down, which is super brit rock, you've got Delete, which is more stadium-esque and acoustic based.
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: You've got songs like Too Soon, which is upbeat and shimmery, which is what DMAs are now really known for.
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: It's sort of like dance at a rock show vibes.
- 3:25SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: Um, and then pulling a couple more out to think influence before we dived into the self-titled album.
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: You've got In the Moment, which is Atmospheric Sunsets, and then Melbourne, which is a little bit more synth-based.
- 3:39SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: So diving into the new album, which is called DMAs.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: By DMAs.
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: Now strike me down.
- 3:48SPEAKER_00: By DMAs.
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: With DMAs.
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: With DMAs.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: Produced by DMAs.
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: Produced by the members of DMAs.
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: Um I mean it's exactly the it's you know, in terms of the energy they were feeling when they wrote Hill's End versus the energy they were feeling with the new album, they're very similar.
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: And in many ways, it's like this is the sequel to Hill's End.
- 4:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 4:12SPEAKER_00: And they've just done a bunch of experimental shit in between.
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: But going through, I didn't go track by track because I had a lot of work to do.
- 4:19SPEAKER_00: You'd have you have much on.
- 4:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 4:21SPEAKER_00: You know, it was kind of like having an assignment over the holidays.
- 4:25SPEAKER_00: It's just a bit insulting.
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: But I I've got you back with the homework.
- 4:30SPEAKER_00: I've given you an absolute monster of an album.
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: Thanks, Boo.
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: Both physically and emotionally.
- 4:35SPEAKER_00: Um, but I mean, kicking off the album with El Alamine.
- 4:38SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 4:38SPEAKER_00: It's iconic DMAs straight away.
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: It's big stadium rock, it's Brit rock scattered throughout.
- 4:44SPEAKER_00: And it feels like in many ways DMAs well, it makes sense why they're so big in Europe compared to well, they're still big in Australia, but they have that Manchester, like Oasis y sort of following in the UK, and it is completely evident straight off the bat.
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: Uh my baby's place is like the soft side and acoustic side of DMAs that doesn't get appreciated enough, I feel.
- 5:08SPEAKER_00: People took notice when they did believe on like a version, but they've been doing that since the the inception of the band.
- 5:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 5:16SPEAKER_00: And I feel like the storytelling ability that the band has isn't quite celebrated enough, and the sort of the journey through my baby's place is really sort of that at its its finest.
- 5:29SPEAKER_00: Um, it's sweet yet melancholic, you know?
- 5:32SPEAKER_01: Oh it's it is it is a bit sad.
- 5:34SPEAKER_01: And Tommy's Tommy's voice on that, on that.
- 5:36SPEAKER_01: Like he voice of an angel, that boy.
- 5:38SPEAKER_01: Tommy from DMAs has one of the best voices in Australia.
- 5:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 5:41SPEAKER_01: Incredible, insane.
- 5:43SPEAKER_01: And turn turns out we found out uh behind the scenes.
- 5:45SPEAKER_01: Also, gun soccer player.
- 5:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: Sydney FC.
- 5:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 5:49SPEAKER_00: Shout out the crossbar challenge.
- 5:51SPEAKER_00: Shout out the crossbar challenge.
- 5:53SPEAKER_00: Uh a couple of the singles, Hurricane, would pop off at a sunset festival slot.
- 5:58SPEAKER_00: The band do like rock music but holds space really well, which I think is something that a lot of bands don't do.
- 6:05SPEAKER_00: Um you know, at times they're playing through these sounds, but there's always this I don't know, when you talk about space, it's hard to describe it.
- 6:16SPEAKER_01: It's it's sound, I I always think not just for DMAs, but for a lot of bands, I do say like it sounds spacious.
- 6:22SPEAKER_01: It feels like if you were sitting in a big room, that this the sound would fill up that room.
- 6:28SPEAKER_01: Like, you know, there are some albums that are produced for headphones.
- 6:31SPEAKER_01: It feels tight, it feels in close.
- 6:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 6:33SPEAKER_01: It's still, I'm not saying it's good or it's bad, it just feels very in everything feels like it's very mic'd tightly and closely.
- 6:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 6:38SPEAKER_01: Whereas a lot of these songs sound like they are standing in the middle of like a cathedral and the marks are on the outside, so it's it's not necessarily echoing, but you can hear that it's taking time to move around this room.
- 6:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah, very much so.
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: And it um you don't need the the finite details that only headphones can pick up.
- 6:54SPEAKER_00: You need the yeah, the ambience and the the atmosphere.
- 6:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 6:58SPEAKER_00: Um, killing time, you brought to the show a number of weeks ago, and it gives me this mixture of like early wombats and block party vibes, but then you know, that was in the verses anyway, where it's upbeat and simple and fun, but then it just rips into this really nostalgic 90s kind of Brit um rock anthem, yeah, which I really like.
- 7:21SPEAKER_00: Heat and Park, here you go.
- 7:23SPEAKER_00: This was my favorite.
- 7:24SPEAKER_00: Oh wow, okay, good song.
- 7:25SPEAKER_00: I liked Killing Time.
- 7:26SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 7:27SPEAKER_00: That was probably the favourite leading in, but then Heat and Park.
- 7:30SPEAKER_00: I was like, nah, this is it.
- 7:32SPEAKER_00: This is the winner.
- 7:32SPEAKER_00: This is the winner.
- 7:33SPEAKER_00: So you've got I've got it's the curveball of the album.
- 7:36SPEAKER_00: So it's a tamey, I thought it was a Tamy Parler rip at first, yeah, with the affected vocal, and then it just rips into straight oasis guitar.
- 7:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 7:47SPEAKER_00: Hello, morning glory.
- 7:49SPEAKER_00: What is the story?
- 7:50SPEAKER_00: And the song as well.
- 7:52SPEAKER_00: Can I just say morning glory?
- 7:54SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah, whoa.
- 7:56SPEAKER_01: I think Sam might have had a small ejaculation as he's.
- 7:59SPEAKER_01: I think I had a bit of morning glory.
- 8:01SPEAKER_01: Morning wood into glory.
- 8:03SPEAKER_01: Close your eyes and think of England, Sam.
- 8:06SPEAKER_00: Elizabeth the Queen.
- 8:09SPEAKER_00: Honestly, Camilla or Elizabeth, I don't know what I'm enjoying more.
- 8:14SPEAKER_00: Um no, Morning Glory has to be one of the most underrated Oasis songs.
- 8:18SPEAKER_01: Oh, 100%.
- 8:19SPEAKER_01: I like we've we've often talked about how good that record, that whole what's the story, Morning Glory record is.
- 8:24SPEAKER_01: Obviously, everyone knows Wonder Wall.
- 8:26SPEAKER_01: Champagne Supernova is the one to play if you want the whole crowd singing along, just having a time.
- 8:31SPEAKER_01: But Morning Glory, there's I'd say there's like three others on that record that just go the fuck off.
- 8:35SPEAKER_01: Morning Glory, hello, roll with it, don't look back at anger.
- 8:38SPEAKER_01: She's electric.
- 8:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's sort of like the alarm guitar at the start.
- 8:43SPEAKER_00: And yeah, like I could could run through a brick wall for this song.
- 8:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 8:48SPEAKER_00: Oh, your dreams are mine.
- 8:50SPEAKER_01: I think they opened with that at their show.
- 8:52SPEAKER_01: Oh.
- 8:53SPEAKER_01: Which is such actually, no, they opened with hello, but I think it was early on, and I'm just gonna be like, now the boys are fucking on here.
- 8:59SPEAKER_00: Max is jumping the stands to get in the pit and just open it.
- 9:02SPEAKER_01: It's I story, uh, a flashback story.
- 9:05SPEAKER_01: I think I told it's on the pod before, but I knew they got in a fist fight at that show because someone uh chatted shit to my sister, and I was like, nah, fuck you, I'm the only one who chatted shit to my sister, and I went to go, and then friend of the show, Zach House and said, Oh, calm down, mate.
- 9:17SPEAKER_01: I was like, excuse me.
- 9:19SPEAKER_01: For anyone who knows him, that's a good story of what the fuck.
- 9:23SPEAKER_00: That is, I've seen that man watch two people about to fight talk to them and have both of them turn on him.
- 9:31SPEAKER_00: It's quite a skill.
- 9:32SPEAKER_00: That is quite a skill.
- 9:34SPEAKER_00: That's what happens when you rip into two blokes who are about to fight.
- 9:38SPEAKER_00: Oh, he unified them if nothing.
- 9:41SPEAKER_00: He did, yeah, he brought them together, and that's his way of doing things, isn't it?
- 9:45SPEAKER_00: Oh, anyway, just rounding off a couple of other highlights on the album.
- 9:49SPEAKER_00: One and only, that riff is so cool.
- 9:52SPEAKER_00: It's very clear that Mason is into punk and hardcore with the real dissonance in that riff.
- 9:57SPEAKER_00: I think that song in particular, the way it starts, you give that to a metalcore band, and they are making like a post-punk emo.
- 10:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's like their slow song, that riff, which is sick.
- 10:11SPEAKER_00: And then Dancing Luck, again, back to the storytelling element of DMAs, just sad, melancholy, kind of I'd kill myself if this was any sadder music.
- 10:26SPEAKER_00: But yeah, it's very cool, and to see the ties back to I guess the early days with Hills End was yeah, really cool.
- 10:34SPEAKER_00: I liked it.
- 10:35SPEAKER_01: It's like coming up this Friday, we have a conversation with a fairly big uh metal band that were in town a couple weeks ago, and um one of the things that the It's holding Absence.
- 10:48SPEAKER_01: Spoiler alert.
- 10:49SPEAKER_01: Uh one of the things that uh Lucas, the lead singer, talked about from holding absence from it rhymes with um molding absinthe, Sam.
- 11:00SPEAKER_01: Scolding Absinthe.
- 11:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah, exactly.
- 11:02SPEAKER_01: You know, when you have a drink of when you get when you go to a Parisian cafe and it's a bit too hot.
- 11:06SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 11:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 11:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 11:08SPEAKER_01: Um but uh one of the things that Lucas talked about was about how for them a song is a good song when they can play it acoustically, they can play it with the full, you know, over-driven guitars, or they can play it on synths, and it still works in all three of those modes.
- 11:22SPEAKER_01: And to your point before, I think a lot of these DMA songs are exactly that way.
- 11:26SPEAKER_01: We like we heard them at their album launch party, stripped back, acoustic, sounded beautiful.
- 11:31SPEAKER_01: There's the album versions, which, you know, for a lot of these songs are a bit rocky, not like fucking heavy rock, but like, you know, alternative, you know, kind of brit rock kind of sound.
- 11:39SPEAKER_01: And then I think a lot of these, if you overdrove those guitars, put a bit of growl in Tommy's vocal, like I think they'd work as well, like in that mode.
- 11:47SPEAKER_01: So I think they're just well, they do a well-written song.
- 11:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they do.
- 11:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think it the album feels very complete, which is a rarity in this modern era, Maxwell.
- 11:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but um, yeah, overall, really enjoyable listening experience.
- 12:03SPEAKER_00: Great stuff.
- 12:03SPEAKER_01: It also hit to went to number one on the RA chart.
- 12:06SPEAKER_01: So shout out our boys for hitting number one, their first time.
- 12:09SPEAKER_00: Hell yeah, brothers.
- 12:10SPEAKER_00: Speaking of number ones, Maxwell.
- 12:12SPEAKER_00: Numero Uno, my homework for you is your new number one.
- 12:16SPEAKER_01: No, it it it went to number one, but it's your number one on the on the muggle on the muggle top one hundred.
- 12:21SPEAKER_01: On the muggle top hundred.
- 12:23SPEAKER_00: That sounds weird.
- 12:25SPEAKER_00: Um Phoebe Bridgers.
- 12:27SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 12:28SPEAKER_00: Lost weekends.
- 12:29SPEAKER_01: The hard R there, Sam.
- 12:31SPEAKER_00: I don't know what you're referring to.
- 12:34SPEAKER_00: But yeah, obviously, I'm very, very, very late.
- 12:38SPEAKER_00: Oh no, just very, very.
- 12:39SPEAKER_00: That's two albums.
- 12:40SPEAKER_00: Two albums late to Phoebe Bridges.
- 12:42SPEAKER_00: But I've seen everywhere the I guess the reception to Lost Weekend has been quite staggering.
- 12:48SPEAKER_00: A lot of people are loving it.
- 12:49SPEAKER_00: A lot of people are saying it's her best album.
- 12:51SPEAKER_00: So I'm gonna give that to you, please.
- 12:53SPEAKER_01: And thank you.
- 12:54SPEAKER_01: I have not yet listened because I thought this might be coming up, so I I want to give my full oeuvre to uh vinyl club, my full body of work.
- 13:03SPEAKER_01: 16 songs.
- 13:06SPEAKER_00: Full.
- 13:07SPEAKER_00: Um don't um there's a few reprises in there, just like we'll see how we go.
- 13:13SPEAKER_00: Hopefully, there's four or five interludes.
- 13:16SPEAKER_01: But uh, I think I I think I sent you a thing the other day about like a list of all of the other songwriters and collaborators on it, and it's just an incredible list of people.
- 13:25SPEAKER_01: Um, like Cameron Winter, but also Bo Burnham, but also Jack Antonov, like all these different dis different and dissonant sounds and voices that come in and became this album.
- 13:37SPEAKER_01: It's really cool to see Phoebe Ridges working with people from all over.
- 13:40SPEAKER_01: Well, if there's anyone that likes detail, it's you, sir.
- 13:42SPEAKER_01: I do love a little bit of detail.
- 13:43SPEAKER_01: But anyway, I'm very keen to check that out, Sam.
- 13:44SPEAKER_01: Any any vinyl thoughts for the week?
- 13:47SPEAKER_00: Not particularly.
- 13:48SPEAKER_00: Um big sound, obviously, this week.
- 13:50SPEAKER_00: So I'm not gonna I might float through a few record stores.
- 13:54SPEAKER_00: I'll see.
- 13:54SPEAKER_00: If Blinder have a physical uh record, I'll be purchasing that.
- 13:57SPEAKER_00: What about you?
- 13:58SPEAKER_01: Look, uh I picked up a I've I've just been uh away uh for a little quick, cheeky weekender, and um I uh picked up a couple, uh I think I picked up a Franz Ferdinand record.
- 14:10SPEAKER_01: Oh and you'll love this.
- 14:10SPEAKER_01: I picked up a Donnie Bernay record, Sam.
- 14:13SPEAKER_01: Which one?
- 14:14SPEAKER_01: That one well, sorry, the one I was meant to talk about, not the one I did talk about.
- 14:19SPEAKER_01: Uh but um as Sam said, it is Big Sam Week.
- 14:22SPEAKER_01: So if uh releases are a bit weird and at different times this week, we're very sorry, we're working hard, but we're trying to do a lot of things.
- 14:27SPEAKER_01: So just bear with us.
- 14:28SPEAKER_01: I keep looking at the cameras, they're not on.
- 14:30SPEAKER_01: Not on, but um, anyway.
- 14:32SPEAKER_01: Cheers.
- 14:33SPEAKER_01: Cheers.
