- 0:00Welcome back to Spy Trader , the only podcast that delivers your market insights before your first cup of coffee .
- 0:07I'm your host , Barry Bullish .
- 0:09It's 6 am on Wednesday , October 1st , 2025 , Pacific time , and we're starting Q4 with a massive headache .
- 0:17After the S&P 500 finished Q3 with a strong 7.8% gain , US stock index futures are deep in the red this morning , driven entirely by political news .
- 0:30The major headline dominating the tapes is the US government shutdown , which officially began today , October 1st , after Congress failed to pass a funding bill .
- 0:40This immediately caused S&P 500 futures and Nasdaq 100 futures to fall sharply in premarket trading , wiping out some of the momentum built from the prior session where the Dow even hit a new record high .
- 0:54Looking at sector performance right before the shutdown hit , defensive areas led the charge .
- 1:01Health Care was the biggest winner , with the XLV ETF up 2.42% , propelled by significant company news from Pfizer and Merck , which both saw shares jump over 6.8% .
- 1:14Meanwhile , the Energy sector lagged , dropping 1.09% as crude oil prices fell on concerns over a potential OPEC output increase and the shutdown impacting demand .
- 1:27Moving beyond the immediate political chaos , the overall economic picture is one of resilience paired with clear cooling .
- 1:35We saw Q2 GDP revised up to a robust 3.8% annualized growth , driven by solid consumer spending .
- 1:45However , the labor market is telling a different story , and it is driving Fed expectations .
- 1:52August data showed only a modest 22,000 jobs added , and the unemployment rate rose to 4.3% , its highest level since 2021 .
- 2:02This softening is why the market is now factoring in a 90% chance of an interest rate cut next month .
- 2:08Despite Core PCE inflation remaining elevated at 2.9% yearoveryear , the Fed’s focus appears to be shifting toward employment , signaling aggressive easing expectations .
- 2:20So , what’s the plan ?
- 2:22We need a selective defensive and growth strategy .
- 2:26First , maintain core growth exposure .
- 2:28Technology , led by the structural tailwind of AI investment , remains the YTD leader .
- 2:35Stick with diversified tech exposure using the Invesco QQQ Trust or Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLK ) .
- 2:43Second , play defense immediately .
- 2:46I recommend increasing exposure to the Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLV ) .
- 2:53This sector is historically defensive and has strong recent company momentum from Pfizer and Merck .
- 2:59Third , utilize fixed income as a ballast .
- 3:03Since the market anticipates rate cuts , broad investmentgrade bond ETFs like the iShares Core U.S.
- 3:10Aggregate Bond ETF ( AGG ) should provide stability and potential appreciation .
- 3:16Finally , exercise caution where risk is highest .
- 3:21Delay new positions in Energy ( XLE ) and Financials ( XLF ) until the shutdown is resolved and crude oil prices stabilize .
- 3:30Financials are particularly vulnerable to both the political uncertainty and the effects of a flatter yield curve .
- 3:37Keep holding your core funds like SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust ( SPY ) to capture the general upside , and ride out this volatility .
- 3:46We’ll keep tracking the SPY and the news , and I’ll talk to you soon .
