- 0:01Speaker 1: Local News Now, a VOCM News Update. I'm Sarah Strickland.
- 0:07Speaker 1: Iris Kirby House says it's dealing with serious flooding after
- 0:10Speaker 1: the sprinkler system was accidentally triggered yesterday. Iris Kirby provides
- 0:16Speaker 1: emergency housing for women and children escaping violence and guests
- 0:20Speaker 1: have been relocated in temporary accommodations. Work is underway to
- 0:25Speaker 1: ensure that programs and care are delivered with as little
- 0:28Speaker 1: disruption as possible. IKH is not in a position to
- 0:32Speaker 1: accept new guests at this time. However, the crisis line
- 0:35Speaker 1: is in full operation to help direct people to other
- 0:38Speaker 1: available emergency services, supports, and safety plans. Staff are asking partners, supporters,
- 0:44Speaker 1: and neighbors not to drop off donations at this time
- 0:47Speaker 1: as there is no space to properly receive or store items.
- 0:51Speaker 1: The extent of the damage caused is being assessed. IKH
- 0:54Speaker 1: will provide updates on operations as they become available. A
- 0:59Speaker 1: 47-year-old Stephenville man has been charged in connection with a
- 1:02Speaker 1: wild diversion taken around a construction site in August. The
- 1:06Speaker 1: driver was caught on the dash cam of a Department
- 1:09Speaker 1: of Highways vehicle, pulling off the road at a high
- 1:11Speaker 1: speed and bouncing along in the ditch before rejoining the highway,
- 1:15Speaker 1: Dukes of Hazzard style. Bay St. George RCMP say the
- 1:19Speaker 1: driver has been charged with driving without due care and attention.
- 1:23Speaker 1: Police thank the public for their help in the investigation.
- 1:26Speaker 1: The new president of the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary Association is
- 1:30Speaker 1: pleased to hear government commit to the use of body
- 1:33Speaker 1: cams for RNC officers starting next year. Constable Shane McClafferty
- 1:38Speaker 1: previously indicated that the introduction of body cams was among
- 1:41Speaker 1: his priorities in assuming leadership of the RNCA. He calls
- 1:45Speaker 1: it a great step in the right direction for transparency.
- 1:49Speaker 1: Anybody who knows me knows I talk a lot about
- 1:50Speaker 1: educating and educating the public about what RNCA members are facing.
- 1:55Speaker 1: And body cameras are a great way to do that.
- 1:57Speaker 1: They also, they're transparent. They build trust within the community.
- 2:00Speaker 1: We look to maintain that trust, which is absolutely critical
- 2:03Speaker 1: for us to do our jobs properly. So yeah, we're
- 2:05Speaker 1: excited about it. The town of Harbor Grace has issued
- 2:08Speaker 1: an RFP for the naming rights of its hockey arena
- 2:11Speaker 1: and civic center. The town is looking for qualified partners
- 2:15Speaker 1: to purchase five-year exclusive naming rights for the Danny Cleary Arena,
- 2:19Speaker 1: named after the former Detroit Red Wing, who brought home
- 2:22Speaker 1: the Stanley Cup in 2009. Proposals must be received by Friday,
- 2:27Speaker 1: November 13th. The town of CBS says it will keep
- 2:31Speaker 1: pressuring the contractor involved to finish the Seal Cove Bridge
- 2:35Speaker 1: as soon as possible. Work on the bridge has been
- 2:38Speaker 1: dragged out, leaving area businesses frustrated and affecting their bottom line.
- 2:43Speaker 1: The municipality says it's now looking to the contractor for
- 2:46Speaker 1: answers on when the bridge can open and what measures
- 2:49Speaker 1: it proposes to get there. The contractor, which resumed work
- 2:53Speaker 1: at the site on Monday... is using a drill rig
- 2:55Speaker 1: to complete the next phase of the project. The bridge
- 2:58Speaker 1: is not expected to open before year's end. That's your news.
- 3:03Speaker 1: I'm Sarah Strickland.
