- 0:02Speaker 1: Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast, your home for
- 0:06Speaker 1: deer hunting news, stories and strategies, and now your host,
- 0:11Speaker 1: Mark Kenyon. Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast. I'm
- 0:16Speaker 1: your host, Mark Kenyan. This episode number two hundred and four,
- 0:19Speaker 1: and today on the show, we're preparing for shed Rally
- 0:22Speaker 1: weekend by sharing our best shed hunting advice, and then
- 0:26Speaker 1: we're joined by Jeremy Moore to talk through some really
- 0:28Speaker 1: interesting next level antler dog insights. You're gonna enjoy this one. Okay, guys,
- 0:46Speaker 1: I need to cut in here and give you a
- 0:48Speaker 1: little pre introduction to what you're about to hear, because
- 0:52Speaker 1: in a second here you're gonna hear me in this
- 0:54Speaker 1: original intro laying out the plan for today's episode, and
- 0:58Speaker 1: part one is you're gonna here is me and Dan
- 1:01Speaker 1: talking about a lot of stuff related to shed hunting.
- 1:03Speaker 1: But then you're gonna hear me mentioned part two, which
- 1:06Speaker 1: features Jeremy Moore of Dog Bone Hunter and him and
- 1:10Speaker 1: me talking about training shed hunting dogs. And the reason
- 1:12Speaker 1: why I wanted to add this little prologue is because
- 1:15Speaker 1: I think in that original intro I kind of undersell
- 1:18Speaker 1: that portion of the podcast. But now that I've actually
- 1:20Speaker 1: recorded that interview. I'm now feeling compelled to oversell because
- 1:24Speaker 1: I think it just turned out really really cool. If
- 1:26Speaker 1: you someday want a shed hunting dog or if you
- 1:29Speaker 1: have one now, I think this is a really unique
- 1:32Speaker 1: and helpful conversation that's different than most other shed dog
- 1:35Speaker 1: training interviews or resources I've seen out there. Me and
- 1:38Speaker 1: Jeremy and this one we go in depth on my
- 1:41Speaker 1: own personal shed dog challenges and frustrations, and the insight
- 1:46Speaker 1: that Jeremy provided on this one was it was just
- 1:49Speaker 1: it was just really awesome, so much so that I
- 1:51Speaker 1: came out of this conversation with a whole new level
- 1:54Speaker 1: of excitement and interest in my dog and his antler
- 1:57Speaker 1: finding future. It was just kind of a I don't know,
- 2:00Speaker 1: it was neat. I really enjoyed it, and I just
- 2:02Speaker 1: want to have this little prelude to make sure you
- 2:04Speaker 1: knew what was coming. Um, So enough of that. I
- 2:07Speaker 1: hope you enjoyed this one as much as I did.
- 2:09Speaker 1: And now I'm going to drop you right into the
- 2:11Speaker 1: original recording. All right, folks, welcome to the Wire to
- 2:16Speaker 1: Hunt podcast, brought to you by A Sick of Gear,
- 2:19Speaker 1: and Today on the show, we are talking shed hunting. Um,
- 2:24Speaker 1: we're talking bone, we're talking white gold, and we're talking
- 2:28Speaker 1: about all this stuff because of course it's that time
- 2:30Speaker 1: of year and um it is also shed Rally week.
- 2:35Speaker 1: So remember that one year you and me went shed
- 2:39Speaker 1: hunting and we were just like all of a sudden,
- 2:41Speaker 1: randomly each one of us. Ye shed rally in the
- 2:44Speaker 1: mountain in the woods. That was was that, just me
- 2:47Speaker 1: and you? Because there was what does Corey was there that?
- 2:54Speaker 1: What does ross yelling? Does you guys have um something
- 2:57Speaker 1: that you hell yell? And it's when you guys find antler.
- 3:01Speaker 1: Well I've always wanted to yell bingo, bengo if you
- 3:04Speaker 1: find a really big one. Um, I don't know, I
- 3:08Speaker 1: just yell shed um or I scream expletives and start
- 3:14Speaker 1: to cry and break down emotionally because of the build
- 3:18Speaker 1: up to that point. But yeah, dude, Um, shed Rally
- 3:23Speaker 1: is this weekend, which is this you know, this event
- 3:26Speaker 1: that the folkstore White Tail Properties started a handful of
- 3:29Speaker 1: years ago and it's just become kind of a cool
- 3:31Speaker 1: thing for everyone. Um, just a weekend where everyone tries
- 3:35Speaker 1: to get out and go shed hunting wherever you're at.
- 3:37Speaker 1: Share pictures share videos stuff on social media. UM, and
- 3:42Speaker 1: it's just been a good excuse for me and my
- 3:43Speaker 1: buddies to come out to Iowa each of the past
- 3:46Speaker 1: few years too and do some shed hunting. So we've
- 3:48Speaker 1: got to spend a couple of those weekends together, Dan
- 3:51Speaker 1: and Uh. We got another one coming up this weekend.
- 3:54Speaker 1: So here's here's the first question before we get to everything,
- 3:57Speaker 1: and I guess let me rewind the tape. Here's second.
- 4:01Speaker 1: On today's episode, we're talking sheds. I want me and
- 4:04Speaker 1: Dan here. We're gonna talk a little about our most
- 4:06Speaker 1: recent shed hunting exploits, and then I want to talk
- 4:09Speaker 1: a little about some of the things we've learned about
- 4:11Speaker 1: shed hunting over the years. We've talked about shed hunting
- 4:14Speaker 1: in past years and past seasons, but now you and
- 4:17Speaker 1: me are old farts, we each have kids, We've been
- 4:20Speaker 1: around the block. We're gonna talk about our final lessons, learned,
- 4:24Speaker 1: the most important things, etcetera, etcetera. And then later in
- 4:27Speaker 1: the episode, Jeremy Moore, the founder of Dog Bone Hunter.
- 4:31Speaker 1: He's been the podcast before. He's the guy who trains
- 4:34Speaker 1: shed hunting dogs and has a line of products related
- 4:37Speaker 1: to that training products. UM, we're gonna get him on
- 4:40Speaker 1: to talk about some more things related to dogs and
- 4:43Speaker 1: antlers and try to cover some new ground there. So
- 4:46Speaker 1: that's kind of what's in store today. But back to
- 4:48Speaker 1: my question for you, Dan shed Rally is this weekend
- 4:52Speaker 1: I'm coming. I'm coming to Iowa. Are you going to
- 4:57Speaker 1: be joining us? Or are you not well? And arrangements?
- 5:00Speaker 1: There's two things right. Number one, it's snowing an Iowa
- 5:04Speaker 1: right now. M yeah, that's not good news. No, especially
- 5:10Speaker 1: to the part of the state where you're at. But
- 5:12Speaker 1: I think it's all gonna melt. It's gonna be sloppy
- 5:14Speaker 1: as crap. Um. But my goal is to be able
- 5:20Speaker 1: to drop the kids off because my wife wants to
- 5:22Speaker 1: come with me too, right, So, um, I gotta try
- 5:25Speaker 1: to find I gotta find a happy medium this weekend
- 5:30Speaker 1: where I can go with her because she still wants
- 5:33Speaker 1: to go, and then I can meet up with you guys,
- 5:35Speaker 1: or she'll come with us and or whatever. But um,
- 5:39Speaker 1: I think there's still a lot of ground to pound.
- 5:41Speaker 1: That's you know, a lot of shed hunting left to do.
- 5:44Speaker 1: If I'm not mistaken. Yeah, well, here's here's an update,
- 5:47Speaker 1: and this is you and me hashing out our personal
- 5:49Speaker 1: plans in public here, I guess. But um, without getting
- 5:54Speaker 1: into too much detail, we are actually probably going to
- 5:58Speaker 1: be shed hunting some southern Iowa ground now, Um, we
- 6:02Speaker 1: have potential access to a big property down sort of
- 6:06Speaker 1: in your neck of the woods. Um, so that might
- 6:09Speaker 1: make things easier for you if you want to like
- 6:12Speaker 1: have your mom watched the kids or something like that.
- 6:15Speaker 1: And I don't know, maybe we'll be able to swing over.
- 6:18Speaker 1: You've talked about want to hit some of your properties.
- 6:20Speaker 1: Maybe if we're in that neck of the woods, we
- 6:21Speaker 1: might be able to do that with the group now
- 6:23Speaker 1: one Oh yeah, dude, I'm down for that, um, because
- 6:28Speaker 1: I think the property that you're talking about is maybe
- 6:34Speaker 1: fifteen minutes away from my my mom's house, so so
- 6:37Speaker 1: it's about the same distance as the property that I
- 6:40Speaker 1: normally shed hunt. So um yeah, definitely an option if
- 6:44Speaker 1: you know, if we can, If we can pull it off,
- 6:47Speaker 1: we'll have to we'll talk details off the air, but
- 6:51Speaker 1: but that'd be fun if you could join us. We
- 6:54Speaker 1: we had a good time last year and a lot
- 6:57Speaker 1: of good times over the years, so shed really weekend
- 7:00Speaker 1: is gonna be a good one. I'm excited to get
- 7:02Speaker 1: out there. I think I'm actually gonna leave Thursday night
- 7:05Speaker 1: and be there all day Friday, Saturday, and then part
- 7:07Speaker 1: of Sunday in southern Iowa or eastern Iowa where were
- 7:12Speaker 1: previous years. I think probably maybe the first night I'll
- 7:15Speaker 1: go up to our Eastern Iowa spot and walk the property.
- 7:18Speaker 1: I have permission to hunt. UM, check all that out
- 7:21Speaker 1: on Friday and then um and then head down south
- 7:24Speaker 1: for Saturday Sunday. Got it. Sounds sounds good man, So yeah,
- 7:29Speaker 1: hopefully we're gonna have some more shed hunting stories coming
- 7:31Speaker 1: out of that for next week's episode. And uh, I
- 7:36Speaker 1: just want to interrupt real quick. Okay, remember the first
- 7:39Speaker 1: time you came down to shut Hunt with me, just
- 7:41Speaker 1: it was just you and you found uh, you know
- 7:44Speaker 1: Mark Kenny in side. Remember that the the the infamous
- 7:48Speaker 1: first shut Hunt. I was walking in that. Okay. So
- 7:53Speaker 1: the second year you came, you and Corey Um, I
- 7:58Speaker 1: think it was just yeah, you too, and we walked
- 8:00Speaker 1: to that big bottom bean field, right that was That
- 8:03Speaker 1: was the year that it was. That was the shed
- 8:05Speaker 1: rally weekend and we're shed hunting. We're all pumped and
- 8:08Speaker 1: we're driving around looking at properties and we here snoring
- 8:11Speaker 1: in the back seat and we turned around. Corey has
- 8:13Speaker 1: just passed out. Right. So anyway, anyway, on Sunday, I
- 8:16Speaker 1: walk up to this creek and I just started laughing
- 8:19Speaker 1: out loud because I remember when you fell through the
- 8:23Speaker 1: ice trying to cross that that creek up to your chest,
- 8:27Speaker 1: remember that. So I'm sitting there, I'm sitting here laughing
- 8:30Speaker 1: in the woods. And then I'm like, hey, man, we
- 8:32Speaker 1: can go back to the house and change or whatever.
- 8:34Speaker 1: And You're like, no, man, I can. I can still
- 8:36Speaker 1: walk it off shivering. We had sheds to find. We did,
- 8:42Speaker 1: and we didn't find any. But that was it. When
- 8:46Speaker 1: I fell into that, When I fell into that river
- 8:48Speaker 1: and you didn't even come to try to help me
- 8:50Speaker 1: at all, I knew this was a doomed partnership. Well,
- 8:52Speaker 1: I thought I thought you were under the ice for
- 8:55Speaker 1: a second, because you from where I was standing, you
- 8:58Speaker 1: fell behind a tree, eat like a clump of trees,
- 9:02Speaker 1: and I couldn't see you, and I'm like, oh my god.
- 9:06Speaker 1: So that's why I started running your direction, because I
- 9:08Speaker 1: thought there was some like magical current under this creek
- 9:12Speaker 1: and it took you under, and I was gonna have
- 9:14Speaker 1: to try to find you or you know, call your wife.
- 9:19Speaker 1: That's a real deal. Though. I've heard about that being
- 9:21Speaker 1: a real thing, like getting sucked in under the current.
- 9:24Speaker 1: I've heard of people's dogs dying like that, which is
- 9:27Speaker 1: a real bummer. Um, So you're lucky I made it. Yeah,
- 9:31Speaker 1: I am lucky. This could have been a very different
- 9:33Speaker 1: kind of podcast if I was dead. So she hunting hunting?
- 9:42Speaker 1: Uh So last time we talked, you would had the
- 9:46Speaker 1: best shed hunting day of your life almost you found
- 9:49Speaker 1: nine in that day. I tied for the best ever.
- 9:52Speaker 1: And then I told you about finding my biggest shed.
- 9:55Speaker 1: Yeah wait, I don't think that. I don't think last week,
- 10:01Speaker 1: because you found that big shed this week, right that
- 10:04Speaker 1: match set. I found it on Wednesday. We we talked
- 10:09Speaker 1: about it. We talked about her right wen day of
- 10:12Speaker 1: this week, Wednesday of last week. But we recorded on
- 10:16Speaker 1: what day do we record? You had kid issues? So
- 10:20Speaker 1: we recorded Thursday night? Okay? Remember that? All right? Yeah? Yeah, yeah,
- 10:26Speaker 1: we talked about it. I'm telling you, I'm telling you
- 10:28Speaker 1: my life's over. You are you are losing your mind? Man? Um,
- 10:32Speaker 1: But we haven't heard about your most recent weekend of
- 10:34Speaker 1: shed hunting. And I had another shed hunting story to tell,
- 10:39Speaker 1: So talk to me about your trip with your wife. Yeah, man,
- 10:43Speaker 1: we uh, we tried to go out, you know, with
- 10:46Speaker 1: the kids at one point, and that lasted one yards
- 10:51Speaker 1: and then we had to turn around and go back
- 10:53Speaker 1: to the car, which I was a little frustrated with about.
- 10:57Speaker 1: But then what we did was we drove all the
- 10:59Speaker 1: way back down to my mom's house. We dropped the
- 11:01Speaker 1: kids off at my mom's then than me and Sarah
- 11:05Speaker 1: went down, uh and did some shed hunting in a
- 11:08Speaker 1: place where typically we'll find a couple of sheds. And
- 11:12Speaker 1: sure enough, we were walking this area that last year,
- 11:15Speaker 1: I think we found one, two, three, four. We found
- 11:20Speaker 1: five sheds between the two of us in like an
- 11:23Speaker 1: hour and a half walk in this one little oh
- 11:26Speaker 1: it's it's like a timbered strip of that leads from
- 11:30Speaker 1: a bigger chunk of timber down to a creek, and uh,
- 11:35Speaker 1: you know, there are some corn stubble, and so we
- 11:38Speaker 1: walked up and down these buffer strips looking and my
- 11:41Speaker 1: wife found one and I found found two, and that
- 11:45Speaker 1: was how we kicked it off. And then we went
- 11:47Speaker 1: back to the same field that we found the um
- 11:53Speaker 1: antlers that I found the antlers in the previous year,
- 11:56Speaker 1: and I found what two more sheds previous previous week,
- 12:02Speaker 1: excuse me, previous week, so, um, they were much smaller.
- 12:06Speaker 1: One was just a four corn side and then one
- 12:09Speaker 1: actually was a broken tip of an antler, so who
- 12:13Speaker 1: knows what that was from. But uh, and then we
- 12:16Speaker 1: we started because I only walked half that if you
- 12:18Speaker 1: can remember me telling you that, so you had all
- 12:22Speaker 1: those those are all right sides, right, so you know,
- 12:25Speaker 1: there's a bunch of left sides out there somewhere right
- 12:27Speaker 1: and they're probably all in that corn stubble which I
- 12:29Speaker 1: tried to walk and it's very difficult to even focus
- 12:33Speaker 1: on what to look for. But anyway, um, I found some.
- 12:37Speaker 1: And then we walked the second half of the that
- 12:41Speaker 1: big field and we started running into other bootprints, so
- 12:45Speaker 1: I think somebody was there and walked it, um sometime
- 12:50Speaker 1: in between when I did and then the next the
- 12:54Speaker 1: next week, so we didn't find any more sheds, but
- 12:56Speaker 1: it was cool to get out there and uh, you know,
- 13:00Speaker 1: pound some ground with a wife. Does she have a
- 13:03Speaker 1: good time? Yeah? Man, I mean she finds it's funny
- 13:06Speaker 1: whenever she finds one. She makes this who like like
- 13:11Speaker 1: almost like a who all, like a mini Ric Flair.
- 13:16Speaker 1: So yeah, so she went out, she she came with
- 13:19Speaker 1: she found one, and uh that makes her happy, and
- 13:23Speaker 1: she's but she's that kind of person who's like, where
- 13:26Speaker 1: are all the big ones at? Like the ones you find.
- 13:28Speaker 1: I'm just like, sweetie, you gotta walk a lot to
- 13:32Speaker 1: find the antlers that I've found over my however, many
- 13:36Speaker 1: years of shed hunting that I've done, so it's not
- 13:39Speaker 1: just like last year and this year were I don't
- 13:44Speaker 1: even know how to put it. They were, you know,
- 13:47Speaker 1: they were outlier years where I've just had really good luck.
- 13:53Speaker 1: I was probably the first guy to walk that field.
- 13:55Speaker 1: I hit it, you know, at the right time, and
- 13:58Speaker 1: you know from there, you know, this weekend could be
- 14:02Speaker 1: one of those weekends where I don't find another one,
- 14:04Speaker 1: and the weekend after and I don't find another one.
- 14:06Speaker 1: So who knows. Yeah, how did you find last year? Oh? Man?
- 14:11Speaker 1: I think last year, between me and the wife, I
- 14:14Speaker 1: think we only got out once or twice. And let's
- 14:17Speaker 1: see five, six, seven, So we found eight that one day.
- 14:22Speaker 1: So a total between two of us total of maybe
- 14:25Speaker 1: like ten or eleven. Okay, yeah, it's not bad. Yeah,
- 14:28Speaker 1: And this year, just me, I found thirteen so far.
- 14:32Speaker 1: So yeah, it's crazy, and it's very dependent on where
- 14:37Speaker 1: you live. And you know, like here in Michigan, it's
- 14:42Speaker 1: really really really hard to find any at all unless
- 14:44Speaker 1: you just have some kind of mega property. Um. But
- 14:47Speaker 1: most years, even I traveled to Iowa, I traveled Ohio,
- 14:52Speaker 1: most years I only find a handful of sheds any
- 14:55Speaker 1: given year. I can't imagine how cool it must be
- 14:58Speaker 1: to live somewhere and have time to go a lot where.
- 15:01Speaker 1: I know. I see some of these people online who
- 15:03Speaker 1: find a hundred fifty sheds a year. Um, you know,
- 15:08Speaker 1: our our buddy Hossman and his wife, they annually get fifties, sixties,
- 15:12Speaker 1: seventies sheds a year between the two of them. Um,
- 15:16Speaker 1: that would just be insane. I can't even imagine what
- 15:18Speaker 1: is like to have just piles of sheds like that.
- 15:22Speaker 1: I think last year I found uh, last year, I
- 15:26Speaker 1: think I found two sheds a whole freaking hear. Yeah,
- 15:30Speaker 1: I don't know, man it And it's it's so dependent
- 15:33Speaker 1: on I think weather and food source. So this year,
- 15:39Speaker 1: on the on this crop rotation, the corn is back
- 15:44Speaker 1: off the road further and the beans are up front,
- 15:47Speaker 1: and so I think it's just the deer are coming
- 15:52Speaker 1: from further distances and they're spending more time in this field,
- 15:56Speaker 1: which allowed because I think the combine is an old
- 15:59Speaker 1: combine and it's not very efficient. I mean, there's there's
- 16:02Speaker 1: half kernels or half ears of corn in this field
- 16:05Speaker 1: and there's you can you can see colonels all over.
- 16:07Speaker 1: So it's a great food source for these animals and
- 16:10Speaker 1: there's a lot of it. So it's just a great
- 16:12Speaker 1: place to concentrate throughout the area. And what also helps
- 16:17Speaker 1: and as you know my neighborhood, they're not having to
- 16:20Speaker 1: go to other properties for their food this year. So um, yeah,
- 16:25Speaker 1: we had a lot of snow and just just a
- 16:28Speaker 1: decent neighborhood. Yeah yeah, so yeah, Well, I mean you
- 16:33Speaker 1: still gotta you still have some hunters, you know, other
- 16:35Speaker 1: hunters that you have to work with. But I'm just
- 16:38Speaker 1: never gonna let you live that down. That one time
- 16:40Speaker 1: that you said it's a decent neighborhood. Well, I'll tell you,
- 16:43Speaker 1: I'll tell you this. So I had I went to
- 16:44Speaker 1: the Iowa Dear Classic this weekend, right, and I talked
- 16:48Speaker 1: to d n R officer who kind of is in
- 16:51Speaker 1: this area. And here's an announcement. Remember that buck Gordon Bombay, Yes,
- 16:58Speaker 1: the super wide one yep, he he he was shot
- 17:01Speaker 1: by the neighbor and he was found by a trustpasser.
- 17:04Speaker 1: So yeah, so they confidence I think they confiscated that. Um,
- 17:09Speaker 1: they confiscated that rack. And I so, uh, Sunday, I
- 17:12Speaker 1: went to that guy's house who shot him, and I said,
- 17:14Speaker 1: hey man, they found that buck, so um yeah they yeah.
- 17:21Speaker 1: So I think I'm gonna try to get that back
- 17:22Speaker 1: from the DNA officer to give the guy who actually
- 17:24Speaker 1: shot it. So hold on the guy that actually shot
- 17:27Speaker 1: at Is this the neighbor that we talked about last
- 17:29Speaker 1: time or is this a different neighbor? Uh, it's uh,
- 17:32Speaker 1: it's a different neighbor. Okay, okay, different neighbor. Wow. So
- 17:37Speaker 1: how did the DNR end up in possession of the
- 17:40Speaker 1: rack though? Because the the trespassers got busted while they
- 17:42Speaker 1: were carrying the rack out or something. Well, the trustpasser
- 17:45Speaker 1: is a convicted felon and he's gotten busted for multiple
- 17:48Speaker 1: things several times, and so when they went into his house,
- 17:53Speaker 1: they found out that you know, like, oh, look at
- 17:57Speaker 1: all this stuff that has no tags to it. Dude.
- 18:00Speaker 1: I he showed me four pictures and I think or
- 18:04Speaker 1: four or five different bucks. And of those deer, I
- 18:08Speaker 1: had one, two, three, three, three or four trail camera
- 18:12Speaker 1: pictures of these deer on that property. So and none
- 18:15Speaker 1: of them had tags with him, right, none of and
- 18:17Speaker 1: he they couldn't. They said, well, this guy, this one
- 18:21Speaker 1: guy shot it with a bow and then he gave
- 18:24Speaker 1: it to me. He gave them ount to me. Okay, yeah, right,
- 18:27Speaker 1: what everybody? You know what I mean? So I don't know,
- 18:30Speaker 1: there's a court date set and all this stuff. I
- 18:33Speaker 1: don't know, but hey, he got pinched. So that should
- 18:40Speaker 1: mean one less person doing all this dumb ship on
- 18:42Speaker 1: the properties that are like the property that I hunt
- 18:45Speaker 1: and the surrounding properties. So yeah, well hey, hopefully it's
- 18:48Speaker 1: good news to the future. Right, we've kind of taken
- 18:51Speaker 1: a turn here. Let's go back to shed hunting because yeah,
- 18:55Speaker 1: because it was like yesterday or Sunday, you had a
- 18:59Speaker 1: day out scout two right, yeah, man, um, I did.
- 19:03Speaker 1: So last week Wednesday I was in Ohio and um
- 19:07Speaker 1: found my biggest shed ever. And then yesterday, so I'd
- 19:12Speaker 1: be Monday, I went to go scout a new property
- 19:15Speaker 1: I have permission on here in Michigan, and that scouting
- 19:20Speaker 1: trip ended up becoming also my best shed hunting day
- 19:23Speaker 1: ever as far as numbers was found, found six, which
- 19:28Speaker 1: isn't many for some people, but for me being a Michigander,
- 19:32Speaker 1: that's that's a good day. So um. Yeah, man found
- 19:35Speaker 1: six sheds yesterday, which is super cool, um, especially since
- 19:39Speaker 1: it was kind of more of a scouting mission than anything.
- 19:42Speaker 1: Of course I was, you know, keep an eye out
- 19:44Speaker 1: for sheds, um, but that was awesome. I found nothing
- 19:49Speaker 1: super big, um. I guess I think I found three
- 19:52Speaker 1: antlers off a year and a half olds and three
- 19:54Speaker 1: antlers off a two and a half year old. Um.
- 19:57Speaker 1: But two of those were a match set or laying
- 20:00Speaker 1: right on top of each other. So that was pretty awesome.
- 20:03Speaker 1: Just actually nice seven pointer so that was cool. Um.
- 20:09Speaker 1: I found a dead buck on this property, which is
- 20:11Speaker 1: a bummer that looked like it would have been quite
- 20:14Speaker 1: the deer this year. I think he was probably three
- 20:16Speaker 1: year old last year. Um. He had triple brow times
- 20:19Speaker 1: on one side. Yeah, so that was disappointing to see. Um.
- 20:25Speaker 1: But other than that, things are very promising on this
- 20:29Speaker 1: scouting trip. It's a it's a really really cool property.
- 20:33Speaker 1: It's something I'll be talking probably a lot more about
- 20:35Speaker 1: over the course of the year. Um, but it's it's
- 20:38Speaker 1: probably the best Michigan spot I've ever had access to,
- 20:42Speaker 1: and um, I think it's got lots and lots and
- 20:44Speaker 1: lots of potential. So I I'm pumped to start digging
- 20:48Speaker 1: into it more. There's there's a lot more to figure out.
- 20:50Speaker 1: This is different than most of the places, as we've
- 20:52Speaker 1: talked about here in Michigan that I have access to.
- 20:55Speaker 1: Our like a forty acre piece here, twenty acre piece here. Um.
- 20:58Speaker 1: You know, my biggest farm I've ever had to hunt
- 21:00Speaker 1: here in Michigan is the ninety acre main Michigan spot
- 21:03Speaker 1: that I talked about a lot um, but this is
- 21:05Speaker 1: this is on a different scale. This is hundreds of
- 21:07Speaker 1: acres um. So it's gonna give me an opportunity to
- 21:12Speaker 1: maybe have a better Michigan year than I usually do.
- 21:14Speaker 1: So that's excited. I feel like your Instagram told story
- 21:19Speaker 1: told me that yes, you were out shed hunting, but
- 21:23Speaker 1: it was more of a girl Scout eating trip, cookie
- 21:26Speaker 1: eating trip for you, Like you had more posts about
- 21:30Speaker 1: you eating girl Scout cookies than you did about walking
- 21:33Speaker 1: and finding sheds. Dude, you gotta keep you priorities straight.
- 21:37Speaker 1: You know, if if I'm gonna do if I'm gonna
- 21:40Speaker 1: do a bunch of walking, it gives me an excuse
- 21:42Speaker 1: to eat Girl Scout cookies about feeling guilty, So you
- 21:44Speaker 1: gotta take advantage of that. So I did. I packed
- 21:47Speaker 1: a healthy lunch of an apple, some jerky uh, a
- 21:52Speaker 1: little package of almonds uh, and a whole box of
- 21:56Speaker 1: Girl Scout cookies. So all in all the recipe for
- 22:01Speaker 1: a good day. Um. But it was it was interesting.
- 22:05Speaker 1: Um as for the sheds, you know, and I think
- 22:08Speaker 1: this applies to what I want to talk about a
- 22:10Speaker 1: little more here of the coming minutes, which is the
- 22:14Speaker 1: keys to finding sheds. I these days, more and more,
- 22:18Speaker 1: I feel like when I first started shed hunting, I
- 22:20Speaker 1: just wanted to walk everything. You know, if I had
- 22:22Speaker 1: access to a property, I was just going to scour
- 22:24Speaker 1: that whole property. And now when it comes to looking
- 22:27Speaker 1: for antlers, I'm much more focused. I feel like for me,
- 22:30Speaker 1: it's become much more effective to be efficient with your
- 22:33Speaker 1: shed hunting, So focusing on the very best late season
- 22:37Speaker 1: betting and the very best late season food and just
- 22:40Speaker 1: scouring those specific spots. So you know, I was scouting
- 22:43Speaker 1: a whole bunch of things, But then I also knew
- 22:45Speaker 1: there was a few areas that I knew would have
- 22:46Speaker 1: the highest chance of their being sheds because of that
- 22:48Speaker 1: good betting or the good food. So when I got
- 22:51Speaker 1: to those areas, I really picked those with a fine
- 22:54Speaker 1: tooth comb. UM. And the spot where I found five
- 22:59Speaker 1: of the sick sheds was It's kind of kind of
- 23:03Speaker 1: imagine um almost a bowl, almost a bowl. In the
- 23:07Speaker 1: bottom of the bowl is a green food source, actually
- 23:10Speaker 1: an old food platform past years UM. And then on
- 23:13Speaker 1: the sides of the bowl is just like kind of
- 23:16Speaker 1: overgrown CRP type grass and bushes and stuff. So kind
- 23:20Speaker 1: of like absolutely ideal um winter bedding. And that south
- 23:26Speaker 1: facing hillside where you get that sun and where it
- 23:30Speaker 1: warms up the most. In that tall grass I found
- 23:33Speaker 1: you know, most of these sheds all just tucked in,
- 23:36Speaker 1: you know, next to the bushes, are out in the open,
- 23:38Speaker 1: because these deer lots of times if they can find
- 23:40Speaker 1: the place close to food and then get on one
- 23:42Speaker 1: of those warmer hillsides in that grass, they're gonna hang
- 23:44Speaker 1: out there, spend a lot of other time, catch a
- 23:47Speaker 1: few rays of sun and then be close to that
- 23:49Speaker 1: winter food source. And whenever I find a spot like that,
- 23:52Speaker 1: I just I know, to spend a lot of time
- 23:54Speaker 1: and usually it pays dividends. So this was definitely a
- 23:56Speaker 1: case where I thought this should definitely be a good
- 23:58Speaker 1: shed spot and reduced which is nice to see. Um
- 24:03Speaker 1: And Yeah, I don't know. I think that's been one
- 24:06Speaker 1: of the very most um impactful changes I've made to
- 24:10Speaker 1: my shed hunting tactics is just you know, we have
- 24:13Speaker 1: limited time to shed hunt, so when you are out there,
- 24:15Speaker 1: I think it's much better focusing your efforts on the
- 24:18Speaker 1: high quality locations and hit more high quality locations instead
- 24:23Speaker 1: of spending your time spread across everything, um and and
- 24:27Speaker 1: and maybe wasting time and spots where your chances of
- 24:30Speaker 1: finding one are much much lower. What's uh, I don't know.
- 24:34Speaker 1: Maybe that's my biggest shed hunting lesson or like one
- 24:38Speaker 1: of the most things. What am I trying to stay here?
- 24:40Speaker 1: One of the things that stands out to me the
- 24:42Speaker 1: most is the most important things I'm thinking about this
- 24:44Speaker 1: time of year. We're what are what are some of
- 24:46Speaker 1: the things for you over over these years that you
- 24:49Speaker 1: now keep in mind? What are your most important shed
- 24:51Speaker 1: hunting philosophies, right, And just like you, if I had
- 24:55Speaker 1: the time, I would scour everything. But because I can't
- 25:00Speaker 1: want to go to the places where i've number one,
- 25:02Speaker 1: had historically good years and fines, you know, I keep
- 25:06Speaker 1: hitting these these two specific fields right off the bat
- 25:09Speaker 1: right before I hop into the timber or these other
- 25:11Speaker 1: CRP fields where you know there there may not be
- 25:15Speaker 1: a close food source. But what I like to do
- 25:19Speaker 1: is just I almost I guess I have this theory
- 25:23Speaker 1: where I'm hunting, right, it's like reverse hunting. The shed
- 25:28Speaker 1: is now you and you are now the deer. Right,
- 25:33Speaker 1: so the shed could fall anywhere between betting, transition areas
- 25:39Speaker 1: and food sources. Right, So if once you identify those places,
- 25:43Speaker 1: then you can spend your time walking back and forth
- 25:47Speaker 1: in those places, whether it is a a food source,
- 25:51Speaker 1: so you scour the food source, or it's a transition
- 25:53Speaker 1: area or a staging area, and you walk those places,
- 25:57Speaker 1: and then you walk the betting areas, right, and you
- 26:00Speaker 1: just treat it like almost like you're almost hunting, but
- 26:03Speaker 1: you're your mobile all the time. And if you can
- 26:06Speaker 1: find the deer, you know those places where the deer
- 26:09Speaker 1: are betting and the deer are eating, and you just
- 26:12Speaker 1: walk back and forth between those areas, I feel like
- 26:16Speaker 1: you've got a really good chance of finding sheds this
- 26:18Speaker 1: time of year. So let's talk about those types of places,
- 26:21Speaker 1: because we're talking we've been talking generically good betting, good feeding.
- 26:26Speaker 1: What are the places that you find in Iowa at
- 26:29Speaker 1: least that are good late season food sources that tend
- 26:32Speaker 1: to attract deer and sheds or what tend to be
- 26:35Speaker 1: good betting here as this time? What are the specific
- 26:37Speaker 1: things are spots that are you know, that actually fall
- 26:40Speaker 1: underneath those labels, right, So I'll just give you a
- 26:44Speaker 1: specific example, and that is the the corn field that
- 26:49Speaker 1: the corn stubble. Right. So what this is there's timber
- 26:53Speaker 1: and you know, some decent betting surrounding this field and
- 26:56Speaker 1: even this giant buffer strip with trees in it that
- 26:59Speaker 1: go right up through the middle. So the they're betting
- 27:04Speaker 1: in there as well because they have direct sunlight, they
- 27:08Speaker 1: have trees that they can trees and terraces that they
- 27:10Speaker 1: can bed on the down wind side, so they're not
- 27:13Speaker 1: getting beat to death by wind, so they're warm and
- 27:17Speaker 1: there um they have the advantage when it comes to
- 27:21Speaker 1: wind and they have food nearby, And because this winter
- 27:25Speaker 1: was so cold, I feel that the deer are going
- 27:28Speaker 1: to be bedding closer to the food sources to not
- 27:31Speaker 1: waste as much energy. So if they can bed at
- 27:35Speaker 1: the food source, I feel that's a win win for
- 27:38Speaker 1: these animals. And they have the tall grass in the
- 27:40Speaker 1: buffer strip to call home. And you know that that's
- 27:44Speaker 1: one specific example that I like to focus on this
- 27:48Speaker 1: time of year because it's plus, it's easy to walk. Yeah,
- 27:52Speaker 1: And I feel like consistently, if you find a crop
- 27:56Speaker 1: field that has leftover grain, if you've got those buffer strips,
- 28:00Speaker 1: the grassy edges or grassy strips that go out into
- 28:03Speaker 1: the middle of it like year in here out, I
- 28:05Speaker 1: feel like between me and the buddies I go out
- 28:07Speaker 1: shed hunting with, those are always some of the best spots.
- 28:10Speaker 1: So if you have that kind of terrain out where
- 28:12Speaker 1: you can shed hunt, definitely hit any of those grassy strips,
- 28:16Speaker 1: any grassy fields or hillsides adjacent to food food plots
- 28:21Speaker 1: or crop fields or anything that's another hot spot. I
- 28:23Speaker 1: would definitely check out um because it just seems like
- 28:27Speaker 1: they love kind of you know, betting there maybe in
- 28:30Speaker 1: between while they're feeding or just before, just after, etcetera. Um,
- 28:35Speaker 1: it's hard to beat those strips. Those are always some
- 28:37Speaker 1: of the things that I when you see it, you
- 28:39Speaker 1: just want to get there right and in these strips
- 28:43Speaker 1: or not. It doesn't even have to necessarily be in
- 28:45Speaker 1: a strip, but this time of year, the soil is
- 28:47Speaker 1: starting to warm up and some of these plants or
- 28:50Speaker 1: grasses are starting to bud out right and they're starting
- 28:53Speaker 1: to grow again, and that little bit of green, these
- 28:57Speaker 1: deer are eating right, and so any if if I
- 29:02Speaker 1: could find those places in which I feel I did
- 29:05Speaker 1: in this in these buffer strips, this brand new grass
- 29:08Speaker 1: coming up, and they're eating, they're spending a good time.
- 29:12Speaker 1: Because every almost every one of the sheds I found
- 29:15Speaker 1: was in a beat down like patch of grass right
- 29:21Speaker 1: with like deer poop all over it. And that tells
- 29:25Speaker 1: me that there is a lot of animals beating that
- 29:28Speaker 1: grass down, and you know, that's just a great place
- 29:31Speaker 1: to look for him. Yeah. I feel like when you
- 29:34Speaker 1: see that kind of sign to that is always like
- 29:37Speaker 1: a huge flashing yellow light that says slow down, focus,
- 29:43Speaker 1: you know, look all around. Lots of times when I
- 29:45Speaker 1: get into a spot like that, I like to walk,
- 29:47Speaker 1: you know, ten fifteen yards to stop into a slow
- 29:50Speaker 1: like degree spin and just look at the whole area.
- 29:53Speaker 1: Because it's really easy to just walk past sheds too.
- 29:57Speaker 1: Especially you know if you don't frome every angle, lots
- 30:01Speaker 1: of time to shed, even a big shed, could you know,
- 30:04Speaker 1: you can miss it behind a log or behind a
- 30:05Speaker 1: clump of grass. Um. So it's good to every once
- 30:08Speaker 1: in a while look behind you look at things from
- 30:10Speaker 1: a different perspective. I've always found that helpful. Um. So
- 30:15Speaker 1: you mentioned the grassy strips. We talked about the crop fields.
- 30:18Speaker 1: Of course, trying to understand what those crop fields are
- 30:20Speaker 1: the deer feeding and now and lots of times that's
- 30:23Speaker 1: you know, cut corn field that might have waste grain.
- 30:25Speaker 1: Sometimes you know, a bean field might have some waste
- 30:28Speaker 1: grain that's still left over maybe. And of course if
- 30:30Speaker 1: you have a standing crop field, that's even better. Um.
- 30:33Speaker 1: Lots of times winter wheat, at least by us can
- 30:35Speaker 1: be getting hit hard really right now, and that's another
- 30:38Speaker 1: thing to look for. Um, My clover food plot on
- 30:42Speaker 1: my Michigan property is actually getting slammed right now. UM.
- 30:46Speaker 1: So that you know, I think a lot of this
- 30:47Speaker 1: comes down to checking food sources. And finding out where
- 30:50Speaker 1: that hotspot is and then knowing, Okay, I need to
- 30:52Speaker 1: focus my efforts around this. UM now for betting areas
- 30:57Speaker 1: other than the grassy stuff you talked about, see RP
- 31:01Speaker 1: buffer strips, things like that. UM. And we mentioned already
- 31:05Speaker 1: the south facing hillsides that warm up faster, they get
- 31:07Speaker 1: melted snow faster, they catch more sunlight, and those are
- 31:11Speaker 1: key things to look for. Another thing I like to
- 31:13Speaker 1: look for is thermal cover, So like evergreens, conifers, pine
- 31:18Speaker 1: trees that are going to hold in some heat. Lots
- 31:20Speaker 1: of times that's gonna be somewhere the bucks like to bed,
- 31:23Speaker 1: or deer in general like to bed during the winter. UM.
- 31:26Speaker 1: That's where I found holy Field shed in a little
- 31:28Speaker 1: stand of pine trees. UM. So that's another thing, like
- 31:32Speaker 1: kean On, whenever I see like clumps of cedar trees,
- 31:34Speaker 1: I'm always checking underneath those because that just seems to
- 31:37Speaker 1: be another spot that lots of times of buckle bed
- 31:39Speaker 1: next to an isolated cedar tree and some brush and
- 31:43Speaker 1: he gets a little out of protection. UM. And you
- 31:47Speaker 1: mentioned earlier are Iowa shed hunting trip that I went
- 31:50Speaker 1: on with you when I fell in the river. UM.
- 31:53Speaker 1: That was an example of finding a buck bedding area
- 31:56Speaker 1: out on the points off of ridges, right. Um. That's
- 31:59Speaker 1: another place I check often is when you get these
- 32:01Speaker 1: spur ridges that come off lots of times you get
- 32:04Speaker 1: a buck that might bet off on the end of
- 32:05Speaker 1: one of those knobs. And that's where I found the
- 32:08Speaker 1: Mark Kenyon ship was a big knob coming off of
- 32:11Speaker 1: a main ridge. Um So I always check those, um
- 32:15Speaker 1: in watery like wet land type stuff when I'm looking
- 32:18Speaker 1: for betting. If you've got like a marsh land that's
- 32:20Speaker 1: next to one of those fields that we talked about,
- 32:23Speaker 1: if you can find those high spots in the marshy area, again,
- 32:26Speaker 1: that's a spot of buck my bed that you might
- 32:27Speaker 1: be able to find something. Um So, those as I'm trying,
- 32:31Speaker 1: as i'm speaking this all out, those are the main
- 32:34Speaker 1: types of places that I look for as far as
- 32:36Speaker 1: winter betting. And then of course like any really really
- 32:39Speaker 1: thick brushy stuff you know, generic betting cover um like
- 32:43Speaker 1: autumn olive or different things around here in Michigan that
- 32:46Speaker 1: I look for. The deer find that just extra tight,
- 32:50Speaker 1: really thick, high stem count type cover. Those places can
- 32:53Speaker 1: hold sheds too, So so that's that's what I focus on.
- 32:56Speaker 1: I focused on those types of betting areas, those types
- 32:58Speaker 1: of food sources, and I scour them. Um, this time
- 33:03Speaker 1: of year is about as good as it gets. Um,
- 33:07Speaker 1: is there anything we missed as far as specific locations,
- 33:09Speaker 1: I mean we we haven't talked through every single little
- 33:11Speaker 1: different place, but as far as the very most important things,
- 33:15Speaker 1: I feel like that kind of covers the very most
- 33:16Speaker 1: important locations right right. And to be honest with you,
- 33:21Speaker 1: I've never I don't think I can remember a time
- 33:25Speaker 1: that I have found a a shed in what you
- 33:31Speaker 1: would consider what you just described as a cedar thicket.
- 33:34Speaker 1: For me, anyway, you haven't. I have not know a
- 33:37Speaker 1: majority of my sheds have been found, like you said,
- 33:41Speaker 1: on either the ridge like a like a I don't know,
- 33:45Speaker 1: a ridge leading to a food source, let's say, like
- 33:47Speaker 1: a transition area just like you if you were hunting right,
- 33:50Speaker 1: you would be down one third of the way and
- 33:53Speaker 1: there'd be a trail that would be on there, and
- 33:55Speaker 1: I found my sheds there. I found my sheds at
- 33:58Speaker 1: the points like you described. I found my UM sheds
- 34:03Speaker 1: a lot in the on edges, right. We all we
- 34:05Speaker 1: all talked about how edge is good habitat for deer,
- 34:09Speaker 1: like we're timber meats c RP and they're walking that edge.
- 34:13Speaker 1: Um a lot, a lot there A couple of times
- 34:17Speaker 1: I guess on French crossings, but that's not guaranteed, right,
- 34:21Speaker 1: So but never for me personally, never really in that
- 34:27Speaker 1: that quote unquote thermal cover. But you know it could
- 34:30Speaker 1: be just by circumstance, you know, Yeah, Yeah, it's definitely
- 34:35Speaker 1: been one of the places that I've found found some
- 34:38Speaker 1: but um, you know, there's no guarantees, that's for sure.
- 34:42Speaker 1: I've walked into plenty of spots like that thinking oh,
- 34:45Speaker 1: for sure, there's got to be a shed there, and
- 34:46Speaker 1: then they never find anything. Um. But now a couple
- 34:51Speaker 1: other quick tips for shed hunting in our quick kind
- 34:55Speaker 1: of cliff notes review of shed hunting here. Um, I
- 34:58Speaker 1: think of cour it is one of the very most
- 35:00Speaker 1: important things is just putting a lot of miles on
- 35:03Speaker 1: your boots. Like it is a numbers game. You're not
- 35:05Speaker 1: going to find a lot of sheds unless you walk
- 35:07Speaker 1: a lot of miles. Because even if you're in the
- 35:09Speaker 1: even if you're in the very best property and all
- 35:11Speaker 1: of Iowa, you still gotta walk a lot of ground
- 35:14Speaker 1: to find them usually, So you gotta put in the
- 35:17Speaker 1: work if you want to find a lot of antlers.
- 35:19Speaker 1: And then probably the most important thing, in my opinion,
- 35:21Speaker 1: other than being somewhere there's antlers and walking a lot,
- 35:25Speaker 1: is staying focused and having a good attitude. It's it's
- 35:28Speaker 1: really easy and I'm guilty of this too, that you
- 35:30Speaker 1: can go shed hunting and get the sky high, sky
- 35:33Speaker 1: high expectations and you start walking and an hour past
- 35:37Speaker 1: is you haven't seen anything, Two hours past you haven't
- 35:39Speaker 1: found anything, four hours, five hours, six hours, seven hours,
- 35:42Speaker 1: You walk and walk and walk, and you don't find anything.
- 35:45Speaker 1: And it is really easy to get bummed out, to
- 35:48Speaker 1: get tired, to get frustrated, and some people get frustrated
- 35:54Speaker 1: or at the get go. And I think if you
- 35:56Speaker 1: fall into that trap, if you get too frustrated, if
- 35:59Speaker 1: you start to get bummed out, that leads to a
- 36:04Speaker 1: lack of focus. And as soon as you lose your focus,
- 36:08Speaker 1: you start losing on opportunities to find antlers. Because if
- 36:10Speaker 1: you want to find sheds, you have to stay focused
- 36:13Speaker 1: on looking for them. They're not just gonna pop out
- 36:14Speaker 1: in front of you and have a flashing light that
- 36:17Speaker 1: says I'm right here, pick me up. You need to
- 36:19Speaker 1: really be focused, constantly scanning, constantly thinking about what you're
- 36:23Speaker 1: looking for, um, because they're easy to miss. And if
- 36:27Speaker 1: you get all bummed out and frustrated it always, I
- 36:30Speaker 1: mean it happens to me. I sometimes get frustrated and
- 36:32Speaker 1: I know that I lose my focus. I'm not paying
- 36:34Speaker 1: as much attention. I start looking at my phone, I
- 36:36Speaker 1: start thinking about dinner, or I start whatever, and that's
- 36:40Speaker 1: when you miss your opportunities. So try to stay focused,
- 36:43Speaker 1: try to have that good attitude. And I try to
- 36:46Speaker 1: tell myself more and more now going into a day
- 36:49Speaker 1: of shed hunting, to just from the get go, look
- 36:52Speaker 1: at this is like, here's an opportunity to have a
- 36:54Speaker 1: nice walk in the woods. Like I'm gonna enjoy the day.
- 36:57Speaker 1: I'm gonna enjoy looking for antlers. But I'm trying to
- 37:00Speaker 1: always keep my expectations low. Because I would keep my
- 37:03Speaker 1: expectations low. I find myself just having a better time
- 37:07Speaker 1: because I'm not bummed out that I didn't find anything.
- 37:09Speaker 1: You know, right, absolutely, man, it makes a lot of sense.
- 37:12Speaker 1: So that's that's I think important. And if you have
- 37:16Speaker 1: if you have the time, you know, like I'm looking
- 37:18Speaker 1: at a map right now, the property that I have
- 37:21Speaker 1: permission to hunt. It's big, right so realistically getting through
- 37:27Speaker 1: it in one day would be impossible. And I know
- 37:29Speaker 1: that there's time constraints. But if you can break it
- 37:32Speaker 1: down into multiple shed hunts over a certain period of time,
- 37:35Speaker 1: I think you're not only will your mindset be better,
- 37:39Speaker 1: but he'll probably find more sheds as well. Yep. I
- 37:43Speaker 1: think that's smart, and that that applies to scouting the
- 37:45Speaker 1: property too. Um breaking things down. That was one of
- 37:48Speaker 1: the things I had to think about yesterday, because this
- 37:50Speaker 1: property is pretty big. I was it's easy to get
- 37:53Speaker 1: overwhelmed by it and just start walking willy nilly. But
- 37:57Speaker 1: instead I decided that I was going to break it
- 37:59Speaker 1: up into little section and then just think about, Okay,
- 38:02Speaker 1: on this, you know, eighty acre section, what are the
- 38:05Speaker 1: main features that are important here? And focusing on those
- 38:08Speaker 1: main pieces just within that eighty acres. Okay, this is
- 38:10Speaker 1: where the best food is, this is where the best
- 38:12Speaker 1: betting is. This seems to be how they're transitioning. And
- 38:15Speaker 1: then you move over to the next hundred acre piece
- 38:17Speaker 1: or eight acre piece, you do the same thing, and
- 38:19Speaker 1: then you can kind of like understand each one of
- 38:21Speaker 1: these parcels as an as an individual piece. And then
- 38:25Speaker 1: once you've done all that, once you've identified the key areas,
- 38:28Speaker 1: and then you can look at the bigger picture and
- 38:29Speaker 1: start putting them all together. Um. But that seems to
- 38:33Speaker 1: be for me at least, an easier way of kind
- 38:34Speaker 1: of wrapping your head around a new a new area,
- 38:37Speaker 1: whether it be a big piece of public land or
- 38:39Speaker 1: a new private farm or whatever it might be. And
- 38:42Speaker 1: I think, like you said that that works a lot
- 38:44Speaker 1: when it comes to sheds too. Um, you gotta scream
- 38:48Speaker 1: baby behind you here. Yeah, my mom's in there taking
- 38:51Speaker 1: care of it. So I'm good at ignoring that stuff. Um, alright,
- 38:57Speaker 1: any other final things we got to add and then
- 39:00Speaker 1: are kind of annual cliff notes shed hunting review here,
- 39:03Speaker 1: and I just bring toilet paper. Yeah, that's true. That's
- 39:08Speaker 1: all I gotta say. Bring. And speaking of other things
- 39:11Speaker 1: to bring, uh, good boots. I mean there's nothing that
- 39:15Speaker 1: can bear yeah, binoculars, um snacks and water. You know,
- 39:21Speaker 1: that's another good way to revive your attitude and your
- 39:24Speaker 1: focus is take a break for some water, for some
- 39:27Speaker 1: food that can get you going again. Buddy, I like
- 39:31Speaker 1: shed hunting by myself when I like on that field
- 39:34Speaker 1: right that day. That would have sucked if I had
- 39:36Speaker 1: to share those sheds with some with somebody. But you know,
- 39:38Speaker 1: on some of these bigger walks and like the timber
- 39:40Speaker 1: and stuff, it's almost impossible to cover it by yourself.
- 39:44Speaker 1: And it's just fun going with a group of people
- 39:47Speaker 1: sharing that experience, and it's a great foot in the
- 39:49Speaker 1: door for new hunters. Yeah, no, that's a that's a
- 39:53Speaker 1: good point and great when it gets your family involves, right,
- 39:55Speaker 1: that's right. So that's our that's our ederrelly review of
- 40:01Speaker 1: shed hunting advice for the year. I guess, um, if
- 40:05Speaker 1: you don't have anything else, Dan, I'm gonna say we
- 40:08Speaker 1: wrap up this portion and then get Jeremy Moore in
- 40:12Speaker 1: here to talk about dogs a little bit, cover a
- 40:14Speaker 1: few more things. Um, he's got some more shed hunting
- 40:17Speaker 1: advice to given how much time he spends out there
- 40:19Speaker 1: in the woods. And by the time this is all
- 40:21Speaker 1: said and done, for anyone who wasn't already ready, they
- 40:24Speaker 1: definitely should be ready for the next upcoming weaker or
- 40:27Speaker 1: weeks of shed hunting in come. Before that, though, real quick,
- 40:31Speaker 1: let's take a break for our Sitka Gear Story of
- 40:35Speaker 1: the Day. For this week's story, we're joined by Chase Reatherford,
- 40:39Speaker 1: who tells us about ending a seven year drought. I
- 40:43Speaker 1: haven't been able to hunt the past five years because
- 40:45Speaker 1: I've been filming and shooting other hunters out in the field,
- 40:50Speaker 1: um it being my job and for and it's been
- 40:53Speaker 1: seven years since I actually got to drawback and actually
- 40:56Speaker 1: shoot a deer. So this year all the stars aligne
- 40:59Speaker 1: I found I had some time to get out and hunt.
- 41:02Speaker 1: Um it. I sat probably four days and had plenty
- 41:07Speaker 1: of bucks and does walking under my tree. UM. I
- 41:10Speaker 1: remained undetected by playing the wind on October at a
- 41:14Speaker 1: small button buck that came in, which she always came
- 41:17Speaker 1: in every day, and he always seemed to get bumped
- 41:20Speaker 1: out by other dear um A couple of minutes go
- 41:23Speaker 1: by and I noticed that he was getting nervous and
- 41:26Speaker 1: he was looking behind me. So I threw round and looked, sure,
- 41:30Speaker 1: now there's a big buck walking in with split browd times. UM.
- 41:34Speaker 1: I quickly grabbed my bow, spun around the tree. Only
- 41:38Speaker 1: had a few seconds before he was gonna get out
- 41:40Speaker 1: of range, and I stopped him with a grunt and
- 41:43Speaker 1: let the arrow fly and I hit him and he
- 41:46Speaker 1: tried to take off, and he fell down the ravine
- 41:48Speaker 1: right below my tree, and within a few adrenaline rush seconds,
- 41:51Speaker 1: my seven year role was over on Chase's hunt. He
- 41:55Speaker 1: was wearing sikest Fanatic system. If you'd like to create
- 41:58Speaker 1: the sickest story of your own. To learn more about
- 42:01Speaker 1: technical hunting apparel, visit sitka gear dot com. Alright, and
- 42:06Speaker 1: we also want to thank our partners at White Tail Properties,
- 42:09Speaker 1: but instead of our usual white Tail Wisdoms segment with
- 42:12Speaker 1: a land specialist, I just want to make sure that
- 42:14Speaker 1: you understand what this whole shed Rally thing is that
- 42:17Speaker 1: we've been talking about, um each year for the past
- 42:20Speaker 1: I think it's four years now, white Tail Properties has
- 42:22Speaker 1: been putting on and promoting this event essentially a digital
- 42:27Speaker 1: nationwide event encouraging everyone to get out together and go
- 42:31Speaker 1: shed hunting with your friends and families on a specific
- 42:33Speaker 1: day or a couple of days. That's what they're doing
- 42:35Speaker 1: again this year. It is this coming weekend, So if
- 42:38Speaker 1: you're listening to this when this podcast is first going out, um,
- 42:42Speaker 1: it's this weekend March ten and eleven, two th eighteen.
- 42:46Speaker 1: And here's the gist of how it works. On those days,
- 42:50Speaker 1: post creative photos or videos from your shed hunt on Instagram,
- 42:54Speaker 1: Facebook or Twitter using the hashtag shed rally, so that
- 42:59Speaker 1: number sign, hashtag sign and then the word shed the
- 43:02Speaker 1: word rally. If you post that, you are then eligible
- 43:06Speaker 1: to not only you know, be part of this, you know,
- 43:08Speaker 1: great kind of slew of interesting photos and videos that
- 43:11Speaker 1: you can view on social media, but you're also eligible
- 43:14Speaker 1: for prizes from white Tail properties, Winchester Real Tree, Yetti, Lacrosse,
- 43:19Speaker 1: Legendary white Tails, sent lock In dog Bones, so lots
- 43:22Speaker 1: of cool prizes, a great excuse to get out in
- 43:25Speaker 1: the woods and what I enjoyed doing in past years
- 43:28Speaker 1: during shed Rally. If you're not familiar with this, you
- 43:31Speaker 1: can go on Instagram or Twitter and you can search
- 43:33Speaker 1: for hashtag. So search for the sched realy hashtag, click
- 43:37Speaker 1: that and then it will show everybody else's pictures that
- 43:40Speaker 1: have tagged it with that same hashtag. So you can
- 43:42Speaker 1: go and you can see all the pictures and videos
- 43:44Speaker 1: from the shed Relly weekend. That was just a lot
- 43:47Speaker 1: of fun for me in the past. Usually gives me
- 43:49Speaker 1: a lot of shed envy, but it's pretty cool, so
- 43:52Speaker 1: hopefully you guys are participate. As you heard, me and
- 43:55Speaker 1: Dan are going to be out there in Iowa. It
- 43:57Speaker 1: should be a fun weekend. We're gonna be recording a
- 43:59Speaker 1: pod cast during the weekend. We're gonna do lots of Instagram,
- 44:02Speaker 1: lots of Facebook. Um, I'll be doing a video blog.
- 44:06Speaker 1: So expect a lot of interesting things coming out of
- 44:08Speaker 1: our sched rally trip. And uh hopefully you'll be getting
- 44:11Speaker 1: out there too. Good luck. And now let's get to
- 44:14Speaker 1: our interview, our second part of this podcast with Jeremy
- 44:17Speaker 1: Moore talking Antler Dogs. All right, we are back and
- 44:24Speaker 1: with me, we got we got rid of Dan and
- 44:26Speaker 1: now with me is a much better guest Jeremy More.
- 44:30Speaker 1: Thanks for coming back on the show. Jeremy, Yeah, you bet. Now,
- 44:33Speaker 1: don't put too much pressure on me More. Okay, well,
- 44:36Speaker 1: both you and Dan have pretty good beards, but um,
- 44:39Speaker 1: you rock a stormy crowm are better than I'm sure
- 44:42Speaker 1: Dan would. So you you've probably been right there. Bonus
- 44:45Speaker 1: points for that, my friend. So we had you on
- 44:49Speaker 1: the show a couple of years ago. Um, but you know,
- 44:53Speaker 1: for people who haven't heard that episode, and if if
- 44:55Speaker 1: they haven't, they should go back and listen to that one.
- 44:57Speaker 1: But if if they're new to who you are what
- 45:00Speaker 1: you do, can you just give us the quick the
- 45:02Speaker 1: quick store, the quick background on what is you do
- 45:05Speaker 1: these days related to dogs and deer and all that. Absolutely, yeah,
- 45:09Speaker 1: and and so first off, I really appreciate you having
- 45:11Speaker 1: me back. This is your podcast was actually probably one
- 45:15Speaker 1: of the very first ones I've ever done. So and
- 45:18Speaker 1: I get more people, I see more people, I bump
- 45:20Speaker 1: into more people that recognize and have you know, hey,
- 45:23Speaker 1: I heard you on Mark's Wired Hunt podcast. So that
- 45:26Speaker 1: that I appreciate you having me back. And yeah, the
- 45:29Speaker 1: the you know, we have a small company UM called Dogbone.
- 45:34Speaker 1: It's one of our brands, and we basically have developed
- 45:37Speaker 1: training products UM built around the do it yourself dog trainers,
- 45:41Speaker 1: So someone who wants to train their own dog to
- 45:44Speaker 1: either shed. We were kind of our niche thing. Our
- 45:47Speaker 1: our specialty is UM shed training, so getting dogs prepared
- 45:51Speaker 1: for shed, you know, for for the spring and shed hunting.
- 45:54Speaker 1: And then we've you know, and I don't know, back
- 45:57Speaker 1: when we talked, it might have been like I know,
- 45:59Speaker 1: it was way early in the the idea of people
- 46:02Speaker 1: recognizing it. But we also have a line of products
- 46:04Speaker 1: for game recovery or tracking. So our our thing is
- 46:08Speaker 1: we kind of brand ourselves as products to products, and
- 46:12Speaker 1: it maybe more importantly information And that's something that's probably
- 46:15Speaker 1: shifted more in the last few years, is the stuff
- 46:18Speaker 1: and then how to use the stuff if you're interested
- 46:20Speaker 1: in training your dog. Is what we're kind of branding
- 46:22Speaker 1: as a deer dog or a dog that will shed
- 46:24Speaker 1: hunt in the spring and help us track in the fall. Yeah,
- 46:28Speaker 1: that's kind of the dream dog for a guy like
- 46:31Speaker 1: me or YouTube. Totally, totally, And and that's just it.
- 46:35Speaker 1: The the person that is a avid like the person
- 46:38Speaker 1: who's an avid deer hunter. There's prior to this idea
- 46:43Speaker 1: of what we're doing. It was just it's hard to
- 46:45Speaker 1: connect the dogs to it. And I'm a big dog person.
- 46:48Speaker 1: I always have been, and I'm I I now have
- 46:52Speaker 1: great purpose and reason to put a lot of effort,
- 46:55Speaker 1: the same amount of effort I used to put into
- 46:56Speaker 1: my gun dogs and bird dogs, only it's gonna actually
- 46:59Speaker 1: help me with my dear stuff. So I think it's
- 47:01Speaker 1: just a perfect fit for for a lot of people.
- 47:03Speaker 1: Oh yeah, and I gotta tell you, since we last talked,
- 47:05Speaker 1: and I think when we first started talking, a long
- 47:08Speaker 1: time ago was when I had just gotten my own dog, UM,
- 47:11Speaker 1: and I was trying to train him to become a
- 47:14Speaker 1: deer dog, trying to training to find sheds. And so
- 47:16Speaker 1: I had picked your brain way early, um about different ideas,
- 47:20Speaker 1: and I was trying different things, um. And at the
- 47:24Speaker 1: same time I had another friend who got a who
- 47:26Speaker 1: got a lab, and he started training his dog to
- 47:27Speaker 1: find nailers. And then around the same time, I had
- 47:30Speaker 1: another friend who got a dog that he was training
- 47:32Speaker 1: to recover deer. So I've got these two buddies. One
- 47:35Speaker 1: of them has a dog he's trained to find sheds,
- 47:38Speaker 1: one of them he's training to find blood. And then
- 47:40Speaker 1: there's me, who is trying to train my dog to
- 47:43Speaker 1: do anything. Now, you know, six five, six years later
- 47:47Speaker 1: or whatever it might be, I am in the unfortunate
- 47:49Speaker 1: position where my one buddy has a really really good
- 47:53Speaker 1: shed antler dog. She's great. My other buddy has a
- 47:57Speaker 1: really great tracking dog. She recovers dear like a champ. Sure,
- 48:02Speaker 1: I'm sitting here with my dog and he won't do
- 48:04Speaker 1: either of them. Well, I'm glad you got good buddies, right, Yeah,
- 48:10Speaker 1: I have failed with my training, Jeremy, um So I'm
- 48:14Speaker 1: gonna ask some questions to try to understand where I
- 48:17Speaker 1: went wrong with all that. UM, it's it's been a
- 48:20Speaker 1: little depressing. I love my dog, he's great. UM. But
- 48:24Speaker 1: before we get into my specific failings, and it's probably
- 48:27Speaker 1: my failings, UM, can we get a quick review of
- 48:31Speaker 1: your high level training program when it comes out? How
- 48:34Speaker 1: do you teach a dog to findaniler's UM. Let's just
- 48:37Speaker 1: set that foundation and then we can dig into some
- 48:39Speaker 1: of the more specifics because I want to. I want
- 48:41Speaker 1: to cover the basics for people that are new to this,
- 48:43Speaker 1: but then also for our listeners who heard you last
- 48:46Speaker 1: time and who understand the basics, I want to talk
- 48:48Speaker 1: about some next level stuff too. So how do we
- 48:50Speaker 1: take a how do we take a train dog and
- 48:52Speaker 1: make him a great dog? Um? Or how do we
- 48:55Speaker 1: deal with challenges like what I've had to deal with? UM.
- 48:58Speaker 1: So that's kind of my thoughts here, so foundations that
- 49:02Speaker 1: So first off, backing up, I want to give you,
- 49:05Speaker 1: uh pick me up to you to the first thing
- 49:09Speaker 1: that you said to me was you recognize that the
- 49:14Speaker 1: what happened with your dog is probably not the dog.
- 49:16Speaker 1: I think it's how you worried. It's probably something that
- 49:18Speaker 1: I've done. Okay, first off, that self awareness is really
- 49:20Speaker 1: important because the majority of trainers don't aren't willing either
- 49:25Speaker 1: don't or aren't willing to say that. And I and
- 49:28Speaker 1: so I commend you with it. And I think it's
- 49:30Speaker 1: something that we as handlers and trainers really have to understand.
- 49:36Speaker 1: Our dogs have are capable of. I don't. I can't
- 49:40Speaker 1: tell you. I can't name one dog that isn't capable
- 49:43Speaker 1: of more than what we as handlers are able to
- 49:46Speaker 1: get out of them. So that it's there, it's just
- 49:49Speaker 1: a matter of figuring out how to get it out
- 49:51Speaker 1: of them. That's the key. So so you, first off,
- 49:54Speaker 1: you recognize that. Now. Second off, so back more to
- 49:58Speaker 1: the point of this question, I think you what really
- 50:02Speaker 1: you had Towards the end of it, you had said,
- 50:04Speaker 1: you know what makes a good dog a great dog?
- 50:06Speaker 1: And so I love I love that question because I
- 50:10Speaker 1: actually I use that. I mean, I use a line
- 50:13Speaker 1: like that a lot. So, first off, I'm big on
- 50:16Speaker 1: repetition and consistency forms habits like that's all dog training is.
- 50:20Speaker 1: And so what we really have to understand is when
- 50:25Speaker 1: I'm i'm repetition, I'm and I'm consistent with a lot
- 50:29Speaker 1: of my stuff that I say when it comes to
- 50:31Speaker 1: training and what what really is super important is the
- 50:36Speaker 1: idea of we as trainers have to figure out how
- 50:41Speaker 1: to talk so that these dogs understand what we want.
- 50:43Speaker 1: And so what makes a good dog a great dog? Well,
- 50:47Speaker 1: my the way I tie that line in is mechanics
- 50:51Speaker 1: and technique are one thing, Like, that's that's nuts and
- 50:54Speaker 1: bolt stuff. That's mechanics. That's that's stuff that you know,
- 50:57Speaker 1: hold the lead the right way, set up drills a
- 51:01Speaker 1: certain way. Um Like, it's very mechanical, and it's very
- 51:05Speaker 1: high on on specifics of technique. The other part that
- 51:09Speaker 1: I think so that you can get a good dog
- 51:11Speaker 1: if you've got mechanics, you can, and mechanics are typically
- 51:14Speaker 1: what's talked about. Then there's the other end of the
- 51:18Speaker 1: spectrum that I think is equally as important in the
- 51:21Speaker 1: equation of training dogs, and that's the connection the field,
- 51:24Speaker 1: the trust that the dog and the handler have. Now,
- 51:28Speaker 1: if you don't know if you're picking up sounds around
- 51:30Speaker 1: me or not, but I've got like seven dogs in
- 51:32Speaker 1: this room with me right now, and they're all on
- 51:34Speaker 1: there on different places. I don't have enough beds from all.
- 51:37Speaker 1: So I've got some on beds, I've got someone the
- 51:40Speaker 1: matt in front of our stove. Um, so if you're
- 51:44Speaker 1: hearing stuff, that's what it is. But the feel and
- 51:47Speaker 1: the truck, like, I've got a dog right now in
- 51:49Speaker 1: front of me that I am literally looking at and
- 51:52Speaker 1: I'm putting my hand up and this little dog is
- 51:55Speaker 1: looking at me and she's really wagging her tail because
- 51:57Speaker 1: she really thinks this is kind of fun. But just now,
- 52:00Speaker 1: how she just sat for me. So I didn't have
- 52:02Speaker 1: to go, hey, spry, sit down. I didn't have to now.
- 52:06Speaker 1: Early on, mechanically, there's parts of training where I would say, okay,
- 52:11Speaker 1: time this physical thing with this verbal queue and get
- 52:15Speaker 1: this reaction out of the dog, and then praise they
- 52:19Speaker 1: do it right, praise they don't do it right, we
- 52:20Speaker 1: give them correction of some sort. So the reality is
- 52:23Speaker 1: that the dogs don't understand what what what we want,
- 52:26Speaker 1: and so what we need to do is figure out
- 52:28Speaker 1: a how to communicate it to them. Be when they
- 52:31Speaker 1: do it, we need to have them understand that's what
- 52:33Speaker 1: we want them to do. And then when they don't
- 52:35Speaker 1: do something right, we have to understand how to use
- 52:38Speaker 1: that to create a situation of a win. And so
- 52:41Speaker 1: now you're talking like a little bit more than you
- 52:45Speaker 1: know when we talked. Last time we talked, I think
- 52:48Speaker 1: we talked about some drills, and we talked about some
- 52:51Speaker 1: concept general generalized concepts of shed hunting. You know, they
- 52:53Speaker 1: cover a lot of ground, and they use their nose,
- 52:55Speaker 1: they use their eyes. All of that stuff makes sense
- 52:59Speaker 1: and and the idea of you know, I'm probably getting
- 53:02Speaker 1: ahead of myself on this, but you had mentioned, you know,
- 53:04Speaker 1: for anyone someone who's listening right now and goes, I
- 53:06Speaker 1: don't know a ton of stuff about this. So the
- 53:08Speaker 1: basics are here here. It is like really in a nutshell,
- 53:12Speaker 1: training dogs to shed hunt is very simple, Like it
- 53:15Speaker 1: is not complicated. And I can say that about just
- 53:18Speaker 1: about anything, whether it's sheds, gun dog, upland it doesn't matter.
- 53:23Speaker 1: Foundation has to be there first. And the foundation is
- 53:26Speaker 1: the is the basic stuff that we build off of.
- 53:29Speaker 1: I can't do advanced drills without dogs that know how
- 53:31Speaker 1: to do very very fundamental things. And I say that's
- 53:34Speaker 1: very simple for heels, sit, stay, come when I call you.
- 53:37Speaker 1: So like with some of the struggles that you might
- 53:39Speaker 1: be having with your dog, I bet you if we
- 53:41Speaker 1: got into them, and maybe we will here. I bet
- 53:43Speaker 1: you we can almost always circle it back to it's
- 53:47Speaker 1: probably a foundation issue, and so we plug that hole
- 53:51Speaker 1: first and then we build off of it. So but
- 53:55Speaker 1: when it comes to that, mechanics covers a lot of
- 53:59Speaker 1: the foundation. But the connection, the feel, and the trust
- 54:03Speaker 1: part of it is the part that a lot of
- 54:04Speaker 1: people don't talk about. And I think it's that's the
- 54:07Speaker 1: part that I believe takes good dogs to great dogs,
- 54:11Speaker 1: because you can have good dogs with either. I've seen
- 54:14Speaker 1: some people that have dogs that are um genetically probably
- 54:18Speaker 1: we have no idea where they come from, Like we
- 54:20Speaker 1: just don't know that we don't know. But a great
- 54:24Speaker 1: case in point is I've seen so many rescue dogs
- 54:26Speaker 1: that have turned into tremendous dogs in the field and
- 54:30Speaker 1: in the house, and a lot of the times people
- 54:32Speaker 1: will come to our workshops and they might have a
- 54:34Speaker 1: dog like that and they really have no formal training
- 54:37Speaker 1: as a trainer, but I can see immediately they have
- 54:41Speaker 1: excellent feel and they have great connection. They probably have
- 54:45Speaker 1: pretty good timing. I think timing is something that's overlooked
- 54:47Speaker 1: a lot in training. But they might have all that stuff,
- 54:50Speaker 1: they just don't know how to do the the actual
- 54:55Speaker 1: technique stuff to create a really nice dog out of it.
- 54:58Speaker 1: So the balance between field trust connection that takes time,
- 55:04Speaker 1: that takes some stuff that you can do through drills,
- 55:08Speaker 1: but you combine that with mechanics and technique, that's how
- 55:11Speaker 1: you're really gonna get great dogs. Yeah, and I feel
- 55:14Speaker 1: like that that's probably where a lot of that secret
- 55:16Speaker 1: sauces is understanding how to how to establish those things,
- 55:20Speaker 1: and that's that might be partially where my mistakes have coming.
- 55:22Speaker 1: I don't know, right, So what about this, Jeremy. Can
- 55:26Speaker 1: I explain to you what I have done so far,
- 55:28Speaker 1: like how I tried to train my dog, and then
- 55:31Speaker 1: I'll describe to you that the issues I'm having, and
- 55:33Speaker 1: then can you try to diagnose where my mistakes were
- 55:36Speaker 1: or what what? What's the issue? What could be done? Yes? Okay,
- 55:41Speaker 1: So when I got my dog boon or booner Um
- 55:46Speaker 1: from a young age, I knew I wanted to try
- 55:48Speaker 1: to train him to find shed. So I started him
- 55:51Speaker 1: out with the with the dog bone um soft antler
- 55:55Speaker 1: and also you know, playing with that, just developing like
- 55:58Speaker 1: a fun fetch type game with him. There. Eventually also
- 56:01Speaker 1: had little tiny sheds that he chewed on and and
- 56:04Speaker 1: you know just came to like I wanted to establish
- 56:07Speaker 1: that just a positive association between the antler. UM. Then
- 56:12Speaker 1: I moved on to the next thing where I would
- 56:13Speaker 1: develop a fetch. You know, he he learned to retrieve
- 56:16Speaker 1: antlers for me in the house. UM, and I would
- 56:19Speaker 1: you know, he'd get bring me the antler, I praise him,
- 56:21Speaker 1: give him lots of love, etcetera, etcetera. The next thing
- 56:24Speaker 1: I did was then we started doing like Hyde and
- 56:26Speaker 1: seek with the antlers in the house. So we've been
- 56:28Speaker 1: playing with it and then I go hide it somewhere,
- 56:29Speaker 1: he'd go find it, bring it back, praise him. Um.
- 56:33Speaker 1: The next step I started taking that outside, so playing
- 56:35Speaker 1: the same heyd and seek game, but just in the yard. Um.
- 56:38Speaker 1: And he did really good at all these things. Um.
- 56:41Speaker 1: Eventually then and now he's I don't know this, maybe
- 56:45Speaker 1: he was a year old or somewhere around there. UM
- 56:48Speaker 1: started doing some more advanced stuff. And this is kind
- 56:51Speaker 1: of the I continue doing this every year. UM. Where
- 56:54Speaker 1: I started taking the height and seek but into the woods.
- 56:58Speaker 1: So I would go, I take a group of antlers,
- 57:00Speaker 1: taking like a backpack full of antlers, maybe four or
- 57:03Speaker 1: five antlers, and I go plant them out in a
- 57:06Speaker 1: corn field in the woods, in a grassy field. I'd
- 57:10Speaker 1: have my dog inside the house and then i'd come back.
- 57:12Speaker 1: I'd get the dog, take him out to the property
- 57:15Speaker 1: and then we go shed hunting. And you know, after
- 57:18Speaker 1: you know, slowly working him up to that, he got
- 57:21Speaker 1: really good at it. So that's kind of where I've
- 57:24Speaker 1: gotten now. I've I've done that same basic kind of
- 57:27Speaker 1: training where every year in the winter we start and
- 57:30Speaker 1: we go out and we do this, and he can
- 57:32Speaker 1: find those antlers really well, and he gets pumped. He
- 57:35Speaker 1: loves antlers. He knows like when I pick up an
- 57:37Speaker 1: antler off the table in my man cave or anything like,
- 57:41Speaker 1: when he sees me playing with antlers, he gets really
- 57:43Speaker 1: fired up. So he has like a positive connection with antlers.
- 57:46Speaker 1: And when we go out in the woods and I've
- 57:48Speaker 1: on a training mission, he snatches him up. He he
- 57:52Speaker 1: will go out there. He usually can catch that scent
- 57:54Speaker 1: and he knows to go find him and he gets
- 57:56Speaker 1: a kick out of it. And he seems to do
- 57:58Speaker 1: pretty darn well when training. Yep. The issue comes when
- 58:02Speaker 1: I go out in the woods when I haven't planted sheds. Yep,
- 58:06Speaker 1: I get. I get a couple of things happen. Number one,
- 58:10Speaker 1: it seems that he doesn't keep that focus level. Like
- 58:13Speaker 1: he'll be charging around looking smelling for a while, but
- 58:16Speaker 1: after I don't know, an hour or something, he slows down.
- 58:20Speaker 1: And he's in a good shape. We do a lot
- 58:22Speaker 1: of active stuff, so it's not like it's physically not
- 58:24Speaker 1: in shape. But he seems to lose focus. He just
- 58:27Speaker 1: seems to eat a lot of deer crap. He just
- 58:30Speaker 1: runs around from brother. Yeah, he goes from pilot deer
- 58:34Speaker 1: crap to pilot deer crap and um. And he doesn't
- 58:39Speaker 1: find sheds. He does not find real sheds. I've had,
- 58:43Speaker 1: I've had, I've found I've found sheds myself and wait
- 58:46Speaker 1: for him and he'll sometimes he'll go up and sniff him. Um.
- 58:50Speaker 1: Sometimes he'll pick him up. Sometimes he won't. But I've
- 58:53Speaker 1: I've yet to have him have a real find. Now.
- 58:56Speaker 1: I will say that I am in a not a
- 58:58Speaker 1: very shed rich environment in Michigan, so there's not a
- 59:01Speaker 1: ton of them out there. Anyways. I've taken him to
- 59:04Speaker 1: Iowa twice. Um, and he he didn't he didn't latch
- 59:09Speaker 1: onto it. So now we just shed hunting here in Michigan,
- 59:12Speaker 1: and a few times when we do find an antler,
- 59:14Speaker 1: it's usually me. It's always me who finds it, and
- 59:16Speaker 1: he shows little to no actual um, what's the word
- 59:21Speaker 1: I'm looking for. He's not working with the real sheds
- 59:24Speaker 1: the way he does with the training sheds. And that's
- 59:27Speaker 1: where I'm at. Now, I've I've lost, I've lost, I've
- 59:30Speaker 1: lost some enthusiasm and faith in it. Sure, yeah, he know,
- 59:34Speaker 1: he knows it. I can hear it in your voice,
- 59:37Speaker 1: Mark when you explain it like and I and I
- 59:39Speaker 1: say that I'm not joking, Like I can hear your frustration.
- 59:44Speaker 1: And I believe this is like good dog trainers are
- 59:48Speaker 1: able to read the situation. Dogs read us better than
- 59:51Speaker 1: we can read them. We have to figure out how
- 59:53Speaker 1: to read them. So I have gotten better and better
- 59:57Speaker 1: and better over the years at reading situations. And that
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: transfers from dogs to people to everything else. And so
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: I literally feel like I have developed a knack for
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: reading emails. Now. I know emails are slippery, like a
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: message can be read totally two different ways, the same words,
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: but we can perceive it differently. So I understand that
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: you have to take that with a grain salt. But
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: I can read. I feel like I can read emails
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: and and sense tone frustration, anger, excitement, happiness. I can
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: get that out of reading people's emails. You've got to
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: read a lot of them, like I get a lot
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: of I get a lot of messages and and and
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: so your story right now is like you're not the
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: first person who had this feeling and had this experience.
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: So but so I'll tackle it a little bit first off,
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: like you just said it the very end, and it's keywords.
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: It's just picking up on keywords. One of your words.
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: You know, you've lost a little momentum with it, You've
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: lost a little bit of excitement with it. You I
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: can hear that in your voice. And you're just simply
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: telling me that, like a long time after it actually happened. So, now,
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: if I know humans and I know anything about because
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: I've been there before, put yourself back into the last
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: position you were. Now, how old is boone? He's six now, okay,
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: And what what would you say the majority? So I'm
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: gonna start asking you some questions. What would you say
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: the majority of the time frame was when this was
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: happening like you probably maybe put this is what I'm
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: making an assumption, but you probably put a lot of
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: effort in early on. We're excited about it, gained momentum,
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: it was things are going good. You started to shed hunt.
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: It didn't go that well. You said, that's okay, I
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: know he's young. I'm gonna put a little more time
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: into it. You continue to do that. You had a
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: few more opportunities and a few more experiences, things didn't
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: go well. You lost momentum and said, I just don't
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: I'm obviously doing something wrong, but I've got a lot
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: of other things on my on my plate, and I've
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: got a lot of other things going on, and it
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: just kind of slowly went back burner a little bit,
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: back burner, a little bit, back burner a little bit,
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: and then maybe to the point where you went, you know,
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: the hell with it. I'll just take him for a
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: walk with me, and so be it. That is true.
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: And this was the first year every year since I've
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: had him, every year, and like exactly like you said,
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: I had tons of momentum, was working really hard with
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: it earlier, and then I started like taking him out
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: in the field and he wasn't finding anything or that.
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: I took him to Iowa and we found sheds and
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: he just ignored him almost and that was really frustrating,
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: even though he would pick him up when we were
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: at home and all these things. So so yes, it
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: slowly went downhill. And every year, though still starting like
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: the day after deer season usually once I'm not worried about,
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: you know, hunting these deer, I would still go out
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: and train with him. And this year, this year is
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: the first year I said screw it. I didn't even
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: do any training within this year, I took him out
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: for a walk. I found a shed. He he got
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: a kick out of it once I picked it up
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: and gave it to him. Um. But I was like
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: I was this year, I'm frustrated, and I'm like, he's
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: six years old. He just he's not into it, um
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: and he just so Here's so here's the thing like dogs,
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: when we go through a process of training a dog,
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: I talk about it. I've talked about it recently. We
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: did some stuff. We're doing some stuff right now for
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: Shed Rally. We're doing this road to the rally where
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: we've done these live training things and we've talked about
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: building up to this coming weekend, and so one of
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: the things I talked about was the importance of and
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: in the in the process of when dogs get stuff
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: like we work with them. I was working with a
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: group today at a at a place actually in Michigan,
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: a store that I do this training with called Mighty Pet.
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: We're doing this project Mighty Pet. We're working with these dogs.
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: It's not hunting related. But one of the things that
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: we talked about today was the same thing I talked
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: about last night on the shed rally thing, which is
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: the same thing I talked about this past weekend at
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: Best Pro Shops, which is the same thing I talked
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: about last weekend at Cabela's. So it's a really repetitive thing,
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: and it's a tone that you hear from me a lot.
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: Is the idea of when we're training dogs, we're putting
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: stuff into them, we're getting a behavior. We do it
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: so many times to form a habit, and then it
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: almost it's like it clicks, like the light bulb goes on.
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: I had a girl send me a picture a video
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: today of her dogs first find and relatively young dog
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: and the dog had had it was in a hayfield
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: Stevie Wonder could have found it. I mean it was
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: laying in the middle of the hayfield. It wasn't it
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: wasn't hidden, but it was an opportunity. And she actually
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: got the shed because someone sent her a message that
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: they found it in the field and they knew she
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: had a dog and they wanted to give her an opportunity.
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: She brought the dog out and the dog actually got
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: ran past it, like stepped over it, definitely caught wind
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: of it, circle back, picked it up, and she went.
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: She treated the dog. I could save the world, which
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: is exactly what you want to do. Now that's one like,
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: that's one chance. When we do things with dogs bird hunting,
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: for example, So if you take a dog and you
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: prepare it for for to be an upland dog, the
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: beauty of upland dog training is we incrementally get them
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: to birds. Like we we start out with a balled
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: up sock. We go to a canvas bumper, We taped
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: some wings that we had and sent cold game, fresh
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: kild game, live pitches. Take a bunch of steps before
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: my dogs ever see birds. And we do it over
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: the process of a year plus Like it takes a
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: while I'm not. I don't rush anything with dogs because
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: I don't think dogs can be spent speed trained. So
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: things just take. They take as long as they take.
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: So I go through this process with these dogs to
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: get them ready for birds. Then prior to doing that,
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: I like to go if I'm not if I'm gonna
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: go out to South Dakota for pheasant hunt, I'm gonna
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: go to a game farm, and I'm gonna spend some
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: time at game farms, and I'm gonna have a few
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: birds out. It's gonna be very controlled. I'm gonna know where.
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: We're gonna make sure we have some success. We're gonna
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: simulate a hunt as best we can. That's the value
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: of a game farm. But my dogs, before I take
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: it to South Dakota for the first time, or before
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: I take it to North Dakota and we haven't a
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: blind and opening morning opens up of a duck season,
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: my dog is gonna have seen and done a lot
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: of things that are extremely close to the real thing.
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: And so we prepare them. Like gun dog guys, bird
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: dog guys. We know we gotta do that. The guys
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: that go out there and go I hope my dog
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: turns into a bird dog and they take him with
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: the first time. It's a coin flip whether or not
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: the dog is gonna make it, and if he does
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: make it, it's because genetics, like we didn't prepare him
- 1:05:59Speaker 1: with the training, but the dog just has enough in
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: it and we've lucked out in the situations to get
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: that gun dog or bird dog. Now with your shed training.
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: So let's back up. So that's a big picture philosophy idea.
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: We back up and we look at what exactly. I'll
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: break down exactly what you said to me. So you
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: started out in the house. You got this game mastered
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: in the house. The dog understands that you know the
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: shape and the starts to understand the smell of something
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: like that is going to equal. Dad gets pretty happy.
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: I get a reward, retrieves it. You know, the retrieve
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: is the reward. My dogs don't get treats for retrieves.
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: The retrieve is the treat. And I praise him to
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: confirm it. So dog gets to understand that the little
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: retrieve makes sense. Well, then you said you from there
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: you went what you say, did you go from the
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: air to the yard. Then start playing in the yard
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: like that and you had some success with that, right
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: found it back to you. It was a nice little game.
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: It was a really nice step in transfer from your
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: house because you added some distractions, but not overwhelming. Like
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: your dog already knows the backyard. Your dog already knows
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: the art whether you're shed hunting or training for shed
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: hunt or not. So you got a dog that's pretty
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: stable and pretty comfortable in an environment. Location is important
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: to dogs like that influences behavior. So you transferred a
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: game to a little bit different location with a little
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: bit more distraction, and you found success in it, and
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: that bet you the third, fourth, tenth, fifteenth time was
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: better than the first, second, third, like it just they
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: start to figure it out from there. It sounded like
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: you went to hiding it in some timber, really simulating
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: um more realistic shed hunting conditions. Does that sound right? Okay?
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: So you went and you did that, and you said,
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: I think you said you put a backpack full of
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: vantlers out. You went and put them out, took the
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: dog out and put them on it. Dog did well, right.
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: Let me ask let me ask you this, how big
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: of an area and how long were those sessions? How
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: long did it take to do those sessions, because really
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: I train in small incremental sessions like short I think short,
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: short sweets how they learned stuff. So how long was
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: were those? What did a session like that look like?
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: So a session like that would be you know, I
- 1:07:59Speaker 1: get up in the morning, I'd keep him in the house,
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: I go out with the antlers. I drop him out
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: over the maybe a size of I mean maybe five
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: antlers in a ten to fifteen acre area maybe, um,
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: and then maybe even maybe the last maybe ten acres,
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: five ten acres. I'm trying to vision what I've got
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: this field. Yeah, and five acres is big. I mean
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: five acres is a pretty nice I mean, that's a
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: pretty nice nice field. So there's a field and then
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: some tall grass and a chunk of timber that I've
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: kind of that's easy to get to for me. And
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: then Wade we get out there, and man, he'd be
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: so fired up because he knew what was going on.
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: So he'd be in the house and when he sees
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: me walk out of the house with some antlers or
- 1:08:37Speaker 1: something like that, he's at the door jumping, just so excited,
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: wants to be with me. Um. So then I come
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: back to the house, I let him out, and I'm like,
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: all right, get the bone, get the bone, and he
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: just goes tearing out there, just on fire. And you know,
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: over the course of an hour or something like that,
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: he he'd or less. I mean, sometimes he would just
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: bomb out there and find them all quick. But one
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: of the things I think that was happening I started
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: picking up is you would see him following my trail,
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: so he'd followed my footsteps, and so that was one
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: not dumb, No, they're not dumb. So I tried to
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: like throw the antlers far off from the distance, so
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: at least there'll be like a fifty yard difference between
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: where I was at. Um. Sometimes I tried driving out
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: in the quad and dropping him that way, but but
- 1:09:23Speaker 1: I still came back to he must be focusing more
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: on the me smell and less of the dear smell.
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: So everybody thinks. That's what everybody thinks is I think
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: they I think he picks him up because my scent
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: is on him, or he understands that these are the
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: antlers that we trained with and it's the other antlers
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: that he doesn't like. That's that's human nature, and that's
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: human that's the way a human would analyze that situation.
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: Here's my thought on it, Like is that part of it? Yeah, potentially,
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: really really great potential of it. But there's a way
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: more to it. Because here's the beauty of these dogs
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: when they smell, because do they smell? Other sense, your sense,
- 1:09:57Speaker 1: whatever else is on it. Yeah, they do. And I
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: credit them because they're brilliant with their nose. Like for
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: them to be able to track shows me he's super efficient.
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: Why waste time looking where there where? He knows there's
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: not going to be anything like he's looking for, he's following.
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: He knows what how to get these things quickly. And
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: so like you said, you got a five you got
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: maybe a five acre field that over the course of
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: probably pretty quick. Like I think about it, and I
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: don't compete with dogs. I don't. I don't. I don't
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: compete with dogs. I have no interest in it. I
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: think you have to train to do things differently as
- 1:10:31Speaker 1: opposed to hunting in order to do well in typical competitions,
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: whether it be shed uh, field trials, doesn't matter. The
- 1:10:38Speaker 1: skill sets are different for that which is judged, and
- 1:10:41Speaker 1: if you want to do well, you have to train
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: for it. But what I see, like i've seen, I've
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: seen these types of events, winners, finish winners find I
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: don't know how many sheds ten or twelve or I'm
- 1:10:53Speaker 1: not sure the number a bunch in a matter of
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: two minutes or less. Like they it's it's a friend.
- 1:11:00Speaker 1: So what we we in order to in order to
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: do well, you have to train to be a sprinter.
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: And so your situation, now, that's your situation is more
- 1:11:11Speaker 1: similar to that where you've got a five acre piece
- 1:11:13Speaker 1: where there's five sheds or or more maybe, and your
- 1:11:17Speaker 1: dog is finding him really quickly, and he's finding them
- 1:11:19Speaker 1: by following a lot of clues, and he's just he's
- 1:11:22Speaker 1: just a big problem solver. He's taking these pieces of
- 1:11:25Speaker 1: the puzzle pudding together and going here, Dad, here, Dad, here, Dad,
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: her Dad here, dad, and and and you're going, yes,
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: like this is awesome, let's go shed hunting. Now. The difference,
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: and this goes back to what your story was was
- 1:11:38Speaker 1: you had said in the beginning when you told me
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: about your some of your first training, your your first
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: actual shed hunts. You go out and after about an hour,
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: you said, he started to really lose his interest. You
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: just kind of started to fade. Not surprising, like think
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: about how he was trained. If he's not finding it
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: in the first ten fifteen minutes, it's done like you've
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: done at that time. So we've created a dog that
- 1:12:02Speaker 1: is understands like I have dogs. I see dogs make
- 1:12:06Speaker 1: retrieves for people, and they basically run a certain distance,
- 1:12:11Speaker 1: like and it's literally within feet, like they run a
- 1:12:13Speaker 1: certain distance from the owner, and then they start to
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: look forth things and so. And one of the problems
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: that people have is I can't get my dog to
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: work out beyond it. He's just got like this invisible barrier,
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: like he can't get past there. He just wants to
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: always look at a certain distance. And I ask people,
- 1:12:28Speaker 1: I say, stand still for a second, about how far
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: is that? And they'll tell me off thirty to forty
- 1:12:34Speaker 1: yards probably, and I'll say, okay, take this, take this
- 1:12:38Speaker 1: antler and throw it as far as you can. And
- 1:12:42Speaker 1: they throw it and it lands miraculously thirty thirty forty
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: yards away. So it's what what the dog has done
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: is the dog is memorized like there's only so much
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: distance before I have to start looking, because that's where
- 1:12:55Speaker 1: it lands. Almost every single time in training, and that
- 1:12:58Speaker 1: becomes a thing that I think, memorize the steps it
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: takes to get out there. How many steps does it
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: take before I better start looking. They're so smart and
- 1:13:05Speaker 1: they're so efficient. So with training, I really believe that
- 1:13:10Speaker 1: we have to train the way we hunt instead of
- 1:13:13Speaker 1: training the way we would maybe compete. Now, if you
- 1:13:15Speaker 1: want to compete, I would recommend doing that. If you
- 1:13:17Speaker 1: want to do trials, I recommend doing that. If you
- 1:13:20Speaker 1: want to hunt, I recommend preparing the dog for the hunt.
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: And the idea that he fades after an hour is
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: not surprising. An hour is a long time for a
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: dog to focus, like an hour is a long time,
- 1:13:29Speaker 1: a long time for an adult to focus. So to
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: ask a dog to maintain focus, especially if they're not
- 1:13:37Speaker 1: finding anything and they're used to finding things, hell, i'd
- 1:13:40Speaker 1: check out too, because I'd go what, No, I'm not interested.
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: So there's things that I think we can do in
- 1:13:47Speaker 1: training that prepare us for that. And that means the
- 1:13:51Speaker 1: training doesn't doesn't take place over a ten to fifteen
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: minute period. Now that's training skill sets. Then you transfer
- 1:13:59Speaker 1: skill sets to transitional training for the field. So I
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: don't I don't hide I rarely hide antlers for dogs.
- 1:14:06Speaker 1: I don't do it, and I think people go, that
- 1:14:08Speaker 1: makes sense. It's hide and seek. You have to go
- 1:14:11Speaker 1: hide these things and then go let the dog work
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: in area and find them. But I think you get
- 1:14:15Speaker 1: a dog that figures that game out, but they don't
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: understand shed honey. I want This is what I want
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: out of a dog. I want dogs to pick antlers
- 1:14:21Speaker 1: up every time they see or smell them and are
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: on on a hunt. And when I say on a hunt,
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: I mean they're out quartering and casting. I don't want
- 1:14:30Speaker 1: dogs breaking off of their place in my house to
- 1:14:33Speaker 1: go pick up an antler. I don't want so. So
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: we have this gray area. So my young dogs, especially,
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: I have to set them up for success. I can't
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: put them next to an antler, tell them no no, no,
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: no no, and then take them out in the field
- 1:14:45Speaker 1: and go. Now you can, because it's not fair to
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: the little dogs. As the older dogs get get a
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: little bit more experienced under them, I can get away
- 1:14:52Speaker 1: with that. But when I put a dog out on
- 1:14:55Speaker 1: a hunt, meaning I give him a command, like my
- 1:14:57Speaker 1: command is let's go okay, let's go okay, let's go,
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: and all of a sudden. It's a certain tone, it's
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: a certain cadence. And my dogs understand right now, Dad said,
- 1:15:06Speaker 1: get up, go out there, don't be right next to
- 1:15:08Speaker 1: me on heal in heal position. This is where I
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: develop everything with a dog in the heel position, because
- 1:15:15Speaker 1: I get dogs to understand that connection, feel and trust.
- 1:15:18Speaker 1: Then I let them slowly gradually build some distance out
- 1:15:21Speaker 1: and so I let him out, and in drills and training,
- 1:15:24Speaker 1: I'll let him out, and then I'll recall and then
- 1:15:26Speaker 1: I'll let him out and I'll recall them, and I'll
- 1:15:28Speaker 1: get him to start checking back in. And once I
- 1:15:30Speaker 1: get him checking back in, we start to develop a range.
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: I have a particular range that I like with my dogs.
- 1:15:35Speaker 1: I don't like him out besides gun range, Like I
- 1:15:37Speaker 1: can only shoot thirty five yards. I don't want him
- 1:15:39Speaker 1: flushing at fifty, So I don't want him hunting out
- 1:15:41Speaker 1: at fifty yards. That's just my personal preference in the
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: way I build that into them so that I can
- 1:15:46Speaker 1: do multiple things. I don't want to just shed hunt
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: with him. I want to I want a girl something.
- 1:15:50Speaker 1: I want a pheasant hunt in the Dakotas. I want
- 1:15:52Speaker 1: to do these different scenarios. So I set up my
- 1:15:54Speaker 1: shed hunting to fit my bird hunting. But when I
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: get these dogs out working in rills, I don't plant
- 1:16:01Speaker 1: a field, take them through, let him zig zag and
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: find them in five minutes because I have no control
- 1:16:05Speaker 1: over the time there. If they if I say go
- 1:16:08Speaker 1: find go ahead, let's go, and they get out, They're
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: going to be as efficient as possible. They're gonna follow
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: potential scent clues, they're gonna be down wind, They're going
- 1:16:19Speaker 1: to use their nose, which is what I want. They're
- 1:16:21Speaker 1: gonna find it, bring it back. They're gonna find it
- 1:16:23Speaker 1: and bring it back. They're gonna find it, bring it back,
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: And I don't want to be there to go don't
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: find it so quickly, So how do you get them
- 1:16:29Speaker 1: to not find it so quickly? Don't have them out there?
- 1:16:32Speaker 1: So what I do is I don't do drills like that. Instead,
- 1:16:35Speaker 1: I do drills. When it comes to the idea of
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: conditioning in the antler shape and the antler smell to
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: equal retrieve, I do it in very specific drills. And
- 1:16:43Speaker 1: I do it instead of hide and seek, instead of
- 1:16:46Speaker 1: the idea, because that's going from A to Z and
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: dogs don't do that. Dogs go from A to B,
- 1:16:50Speaker 1: B two C C two D they get to Z.
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: So what I do is I like to get dogs
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: to start to understand see or smell and antler on
- 1:16:57Speaker 1: the ground. That equals a retrieve period, doesn't It's not this,
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: It's not so much this hunting part. Yet, hunting part
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: is a separate activity from the retrieving part based on
- 1:17:08Speaker 1: shape conditioning and sent scent discrimination. So my drills are memories.
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: I do a ton of memory work. I do trailing memories.
- 1:17:15Speaker 1: I do circle memories, loop memories. Once you do all
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: these different variations and memories, and what does that mean? So,
- 1:17:21Speaker 1: so a trailing memory. The difference is if I take
- 1:17:23Speaker 1: an antler and I throw it for the dog, I
- 1:17:25Speaker 1: throw it and I send the dog. It goes and
- 1:17:27Speaker 1: it makes it, picks it up, brings it back. It's
- 1:17:28Speaker 1: very natural because it's tapping into predator prey. They see something,
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: it falls, they run down, they get it, they bring
- 1:17:35Speaker 1: it back. That's been bred into these dogs for hundreds
- 1:17:38Speaker 1: of years. Like they used to bring fish out of
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: the nets, you know in in Newfoundland, like that was
- 1:17:44Speaker 1: where this Labrador retriever came around. So they they then
- 1:17:47Speaker 1: they got Then they went, boy, that dog really retrieves well,
- 1:17:49Speaker 1: and we can use it for this. And then they said, boy,
- 1:17:51Speaker 1: I'd like to use it for birds. And they got
- 1:17:53Speaker 1: a good nose and they can find stuff. So over
- 1:17:56Speaker 1: the period of time they've evolved these dogs to do
- 1:17:59Speaker 1: certain things. We've simply evolved them to find antlers for us.
- 1:18:02Speaker 1: It's it's no different than them finding anything else. So
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: but if I I start out with a duck dog
- 1:18:08Speaker 1: by throwing a balled up sock in the hallway, I
- 1:18:10Speaker 1: start out with a shed dog by throwing a balled
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: up sock in the hallway, And I just I do
- 1:18:15Speaker 1: in the hallway because I eliminate opportunities for them to fail.
- 1:18:18Speaker 1: There's nowhere for them to run off. So a lot
- 1:18:20Speaker 1: of people have problems with dogs are running off, circling um,
- 1:18:23Speaker 1: dropping halfway, wanting to wanting to play keep away. If
- 1:18:27Speaker 1: they're in the hallway, they don't have a lot of options.
- 1:18:30Speaker 1: They can come back to me, or they're stuck. And
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: little dogs don't like to sit still. So but I
- 1:18:34Speaker 1: start out with throw it, let them go get it,
- 1:18:36Speaker 1: throw it, let them go get it, throw it, let's
- 1:18:37Speaker 1: go get After we do that we're just bringing out
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: natural tendencies that they have for retrieve. What we need
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: to do then, because we need to get them to
- 1:18:44Speaker 1: understand that the retrieves don't always come from our hand.
- 1:18:47Speaker 1: They don't They're not always something that's thrown. And so
- 1:18:50Speaker 1: if it's a bird, I want them to understand they
- 1:18:52Speaker 1: have to be watching out in front because that's where
- 1:18:55Speaker 1: the birds are gonna come from. They're gonna get shot,
- 1:18:57Speaker 1: We're gonna they're gonna make retrieves when it comes from anler.
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: We're never going to see a buck run through the
- 1:19:02Speaker 1: woods and shed in front of us. I mean, I
- 1:19:03Speaker 1: saw it once on YouTube. That's it. You're not gonna
- 1:19:06Speaker 1: You're just not going to see that when you're shed. Honey.
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: Dogs shouldn't be trained to look for the antlers to
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: be falling. Dogs need to be understanding that these things
- 1:19:14Speaker 1: are You're gonna be laying somewhere, and they might be
- 1:19:16Speaker 1: something I can see, and they might be something I
- 1:19:17Speaker 1: have to smell, But wherever I find them, they're laying
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: somewhere and I'm going to pick them up and bring
- 1:19:22Speaker 1: him back to Dad. So by doing it trailing memory,
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: I replicate the throwing of the antler instead. This time,
- 1:19:29Speaker 1: I put the dog on heel. I walk down to
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: the spot where I would have thrown it to, I
- 1:19:33Speaker 1: drop it. I turned around, I walk back to the
- 1:19:36Speaker 1: original spot. I turned back around, and I have the
- 1:19:39Speaker 1: dog weight momentarily, and then I lined the dog and
- 1:19:42Speaker 1: I send the dog on the retrieve. And so early on,
- 1:19:45Speaker 1: I make it real short, and then later on I
- 1:19:48Speaker 1: add more time and I can add more distance. And
- 1:19:52Speaker 1: so when I start doing that, I get dogs to
- 1:19:54Speaker 1: understand we change their memory. So they have short term memory,
- 1:19:58Speaker 1: long term memory. Their short term me it is very short.
- 1:20:01Speaker 1: And so I'm getting it out of that short term
- 1:20:03Speaker 1: memory of I just saw it, go chase it down
- 1:20:05Speaker 1: and get it. Now they're running out and getting it
- 1:20:07Speaker 1: because I've already done this drill with them hundreds of times,
- 1:20:10Speaker 1: and they understand this whole routine of they run out
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: after Dad does this, they run out, they pick something up,
- 1:20:15Speaker 1: they bring it back. All I'm changing is I didn't
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: throw it this time. It's laying on the ground to
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: start out with, and it's a short period of time,
- 1:20:22Speaker 1: and it's a relatively short distance. But then I can
- 1:20:23Speaker 1: start adding distance, and I can start adding time and
- 1:20:26Speaker 1: so then I can take a trailing memory and I
- 1:20:27Speaker 1: can add it into a circle memory, multiple bumpers in
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: a circle, and we set it up and we teach
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: dogs to not to run. We set it up as
- 1:20:35Speaker 1: a circle. They run straight lines. So there's tons of
- 1:20:39Speaker 1: it's it's just adding layers to the idea of these memories.
- 1:20:42Speaker 1: And what we're doing is is we're building a dog's
- 1:20:44Speaker 1: understanding of they're gonna pick stuff up that's on the
- 1:20:47Speaker 1: ground rather than having to be thrown or rather than
- 1:20:50Speaker 1: having to be seen in movement, and then all of
- 1:20:53Speaker 1: a sudden, we're it's a retrieve for him. I do
- 1:20:55Speaker 1: the same thing with a gun dog. So but once
- 1:20:58Speaker 1: you get so I do these drills, and my dogs
- 1:21:01Speaker 1: figure out through these drills that thing equals retrieve, whether
- 1:21:05Speaker 1: it be an antler, training, dummy ball, tennis ball, uh
- 1:21:10Speaker 1: scented with certain things. I use antlers sent on tennis
- 1:21:14Speaker 1: balls because it's a great reward. Dogs love tennis balls,
- 1:21:16Speaker 1: and we can make him smell like an antler. They're
- 1:21:18Speaker 1: going to connect real positive things to antlers, and my
- 1:21:20Speaker 1: dogs understand the tennis balls equal retrieve. So we we
- 1:21:24Speaker 1: can use all these different items with these drills, and
- 1:21:27Speaker 1: what we're doing is ingraining in the dog to understand
- 1:21:30Speaker 1: certain things equal retrieve. Quick story on this, So my kid.
- 1:21:36Speaker 1: I had a dog that I trained for a client
- 1:21:38Speaker 1: and the dog was I don't know, close to two
- 1:21:40Speaker 1: years old, never picked up a pop bottle in its life,
- 1:21:43Speaker 1: like I never had it picking up soda bottles. Well,
- 1:21:45Speaker 1: I'm walking the dog down the road and one day, obviously,
- 1:21:47Speaker 1: he picks up his soda bottle. He brings it back
- 1:21:49Speaker 1: to me, and he's weirdly wagging his tail, and I'm going,
- 1:21:51Speaker 1: it's weird. I didn't correct him for it because I
- 1:21:53Speaker 1: don't want to turn young dogs off for retrieving, but
- 1:21:55Speaker 1: I thought, that's weird. I've never I've never seen that before.
- 1:21:58Speaker 1: Next day he does it again. Couple of days in
- 1:22:00Speaker 1: a row where this dog is retrieving pop bottles, and
- 1:22:02Speaker 1: I'm going, what the hell is going on? I never did,
- 1:22:04Speaker 1: never saw this behavior before. He's seen a lot of
- 1:22:06Speaker 1: pop bottles in his life, he's never picked him up.
- 1:22:09Speaker 1: All of a sudden, after about three or four days
- 1:22:11Speaker 1: of it, I come back in the summertime and late spring,
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: and I hear some noise in the backyard and I
- 1:22:17Speaker 1: go over to I walk around the corner and peak
- 1:22:19Speaker 1: around the corner and it's our daughter and she's playing
- 1:22:21Speaker 1: here here, she's in their cycling bin and she's in
- 1:22:24Speaker 1: the recycling bin with Newman this litly yellow lab of
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: ours that we're training for a client, and Newman's bringing
- 1:22:29Speaker 1: back so bottles and I go, what is going on here?
- 1:22:32Speaker 1: And in our daughter turns around, looks and she's little
- 1:22:35Speaker 1: it turns around and looks at me and she goes
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: training Newman and I go, your damn right, you're training Newman.
- 1:22:40Speaker 1: And that's where it came from, all of a sudden,
- 1:22:42Speaker 1: All of a sudden, a pop bottle to Newman equal
- 1:22:46Speaker 1: to reward. It was a retrieve. And so the idea
- 1:22:50Speaker 1: of being able to get dogs to under it's just
- 1:22:52Speaker 1: simply getting to understand certain things. Now, Newman had gone
- 1:22:57Speaker 1: through lots of formal drills with me, and he learned
- 1:23:00Speaker 1: certain things retrieve them because Dad really gets excited and
- 1:23:04Speaker 1: then he praises me for it, and I feel pretty
- 1:23:07Speaker 1: good about that. Dogs want to do what we want.
- 1:23:09Speaker 1: Dogs want to make us happy. So when it comes
- 1:23:11Speaker 1: to the shed dog, I'm just trying to figure out
- 1:23:13Speaker 1: way is to get this guy to understand, pick this
- 1:23:15Speaker 1: thing up and bring it back to Dad, and he's
- 1:23:16Speaker 1: pretty he's pretty happy about it. So so back so
- 1:23:20Speaker 1: so when it comes to that's one big thing, it's
- 1:23:23Speaker 1: it's it's replicating closer to the real thing for you.
- 1:23:25Speaker 1: The other thing is is I got a question for you.
- 1:23:28Speaker 1: When you shed hunting those first how many years do
- 1:23:30Speaker 1: you think you put in uh to the point where
- 1:23:32Speaker 1: you said, I'm ready to shed hunt with him, We're
- 1:23:34Speaker 1: gonna take him on real shed hunts. And we already
- 1:23:36Speaker 1: established he probably went too long. You probably got him board,
- 1:23:39Speaker 1: he probably burnt out. You know, the idea of there's
- 1:23:41Speaker 1: nothing here that you've already touched on, the idea of
- 1:23:44Speaker 1: some places don't have shed antlers or as many. That's
- 1:23:47Speaker 1: that's a reality. That's the difference between getting an upland
- 1:23:53Speaker 1: dog ready and getting a shed dog ready. It takes
- 1:23:55Speaker 1: a certain amount of times for things to click. And
- 1:23:58Speaker 1: when I can go to a game farm, I can
- 1:23:59Speaker 1: put out birds and I can hunt them morning and night.
- 1:24:04Speaker 1: I can go out to South Dakota and I can
- 1:24:06Speaker 1: really finish out dogs nicely because I can go in
- 1:24:08Speaker 1: a slow and I can flash a hundred roosters in
- 1:24:09Speaker 1: the afternoon, and so that much experience and opportunity allows
- 1:24:14Speaker 1: dogs for things to click. How many you know when
- 1:24:18Speaker 1: you went shed hunting, especially in Michigan. I'm in Wisconsin,
- 1:24:21Speaker 1: and if I find three sheds by my house this year,
- 1:24:23Speaker 1: it'll be a banner year. Like, we just don't have
- 1:24:25Speaker 1: that many. The reason is it's because dead sheds. Dead
- 1:24:28Speaker 1: bucks don't shed like young deer get shot around here
- 1:24:31Speaker 1: and they just don't shed. How many sheds do you
- 1:24:33Speaker 1: think you came across over that What was the time period,
- 1:24:36Speaker 1: and how many sheds do you think you saw had
- 1:24:38Speaker 1: a chance to pick up over that time period? So
- 1:24:41Speaker 1: I think I think he started, if I'm remembering this right,
- 1:24:44Speaker 1: I think I really started like taking him out when
- 1:24:46Speaker 1: he was too You know, we trained a lot when
- 1:24:48Speaker 1: he was a puppy. In that first year. We probably
- 1:24:50Speaker 1: walked around a cornfield near my house that first year.
- 1:24:52Speaker 1: But I probably started taking him on some serious shed
- 1:24:55Speaker 1: hunts when he was two. And then over the next
- 1:24:57Speaker 1: you know, three years or whatever, UM walked him around
- 1:25:01Speaker 1: a lot in Michigan where we found almost zero sheds.
- 1:25:05Speaker 1: UM took him once to Iowa, and I think that
- 1:25:08Speaker 1: was that. That was a frustration point, because what did
- 1:25:11Speaker 1: that trip with high hopes in a shed rich environment
- 1:25:14Speaker 1: and there were at least two or three sheds on
- 1:25:17Speaker 1: that one that he that he that I you know,
- 1:25:21Speaker 1: we found someone found first, and we waited for him
- 1:25:23Speaker 1: to find it, and sometimes he would just like one
- 1:25:26Speaker 1: time he stepped over one one he knows and picked
- 1:25:29Speaker 1: up but then wasn't super excited about it. But you know,
- 1:25:32Speaker 1: when I look back on it, and there was the
- 1:25:34Speaker 1: whole trip was a whole distraction. There was another dog
- 1:25:38Speaker 1: that was a distraction. So there's all these other things,
- 1:25:39Speaker 1: these things that looking back on it, I can understand.
- 1:25:43Speaker 1: But then fast forward now to Michigan again, over the
- 1:25:46Speaker 1: last few years, we've probably I've only found maybe three
- 1:25:49Speaker 1: antlers in places where I've taken him over all that
- 1:25:51Speaker 1: time that that I found myself. And so when I
- 1:25:55Speaker 1: do find one, I wait and then he'll he'll come
- 1:25:57Speaker 1: up on it later. But I've yet to have him
- 1:26:00Speaker 1: find one himself. And Brandton me right, I'm so I'm
- 1:26:04Speaker 1: running the numbers in my head here, and I did
- 1:26:06Speaker 1: not need a calculator for that. I'm not a mathetician,
- 1:26:08Speaker 1: but I didn't need a calculator like six you maybe
- 1:26:11Speaker 1: had six opportunities, solid opportunities over a period of multiple years,
- 1:26:17Speaker 1: and like that alone. Now I'm gonna ask you just
- 1:26:20Speaker 1: kind of take a step back, and anyone who's listening
- 1:26:23Speaker 1: right now just take a step because you're probably going
- 1:26:25Speaker 1: mark there. These people listening right now are probably gonna
- 1:26:28Speaker 1: mark him in the exact same boat. Thank you for
- 1:26:30Speaker 1: asking these questions, because these are great. This is great,
- 1:26:33Speaker 1: like this makes this is really valuable. And so they're
- 1:26:36Speaker 1: saying I had the same thing happened, And some people
- 1:26:39Speaker 1: might say, you know what, I haven't found six. I
- 1:26:41Speaker 1: did not have a chance to find that many. Some
- 1:26:43Speaker 1: people might say I found way more than that, and
- 1:26:46Speaker 1: so it's gonna vary. But this, this is true. This
- 1:26:52Speaker 1: unless someone finds a lot of antlers, which if they're
- 1:26:57Speaker 1: just I just don't know that many people that do.
- 1:26:59Speaker 1: But that's not very many opportunities. Like that's like asking
- 1:27:03Speaker 1: a kid to be a basketball player and starting him
- 1:27:06Speaker 1: out when he's like in third grade or second grade,
- 1:27:09Speaker 1: like really really young. You help him get ready, to
- 1:27:12Speaker 1: help him get ready, you know, first couple of seasons,
- 1:27:14Speaker 1: and you let him you let him take six shots
- 1:27:18Speaker 1: in games over a three or four year career, like
- 1:27:22Speaker 1: that kid is gonna quit playing basketball. He's just it's
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: just not You can't divide. You can't get very good
- 1:27:29Speaker 1: if you shoot the basketball six times in three years,
- 1:27:32Speaker 1: like it's possible. So but when you take a step
- 1:27:35Speaker 1: back and you assess this and you look at it,
- 1:27:38Speaker 1: I my hope is that you're gonna go. Man, that
- 1:27:41Speaker 1: makes a little sense. And I'm gonna tell you right
- 1:27:43Speaker 1: I'm gonna tell you right now. Like I'm a dog trainer,
- 1:27:46Speaker 1: like I trained dogs for clients, I've really pride myself
- 1:27:49Speaker 1: on the dogs. I think they're they're good, They're real good.
- 1:27:52Speaker 1: My personal dogs are good, man, They're just I'm I'm
- 1:27:55Speaker 1: extremely proud of them. But I will tell you this.
- 1:27:59Speaker 1: Ellie my one of my I think she'll be one
- 1:28:01Speaker 1: of the finest dogs I own. She's two and a
- 1:28:03Speaker 1: half years old right now. She's shed headed one season.
- 1:28:05Speaker 1: She went last year. I did not. I don't shed
- 1:28:08Speaker 1: hunt nearly as much as I wish I could. I
- 1:28:10Speaker 1: used to shed out a lot more before I got
- 1:28:11Speaker 1: into this, but it sounds really counterproductive. But it's the
- 1:28:16Speaker 1: time of year and the business and the things that
- 1:28:18Speaker 1: are going on. Just take away and you know what
- 1:28:19Speaker 1: I'm saying. So when you when I took Ellie out
- 1:28:23Speaker 1: last year, she was, uh, the about a year and
- 1:28:26Speaker 1: a half. I run a big risk. I do a
- 1:28:29Speaker 1: lot of things live training. I like to show the
- 1:28:33Speaker 1: progress of these dogs, and I like to show the good,
- 1:28:35Speaker 1: the bad, and the ugly. And it's very dangerous because
- 1:28:38Speaker 1: you can look like a real moron. I mean you
- 1:28:40Speaker 1: can really look like a bad trainer. You know what
- 1:28:42Speaker 1: I've found it's the most it's the best way for
- 1:28:46Speaker 1: people to connect and understand that he's a real trainer
- 1:28:49Speaker 1: and he's also a real person and his dogs are
- 1:28:52Speaker 1: real dogs. They make the same mistakes yours do. Like
- 1:28:55Speaker 1: what you just described with Boone is exactly what Ellie did,
- 1:28:58Speaker 1: but maybe worse. My dog. I was live on Facebook
- 1:29:02Speaker 1: when she found her first antler. It took over ten minutes,
- 1:29:05Speaker 1: and I stood next to it the entire time, and
- 1:29:07Speaker 1: so all I did was trying to encourage her. I
- 1:29:09Speaker 1: think she bumped into it multiple times. I think she
- 1:29:11Speaker 1: almost tripped on it a couple of times. She it
- 1:29:14Speaker 1: took so long for her to click this is a
- 1:29:17Speaker 1: dog I train and I own, and I'm proud of
- 1:29:19Speaker 1: And I will say this she's gonna turn out just fine.
- 1:29:23Speaker 1: Her first opportunity. She looked silly. But my my reaction
- 1:29:29Speaker 1: to it was what was the most important part, because
- 1:29:32Speaker 1: trust me, the blood pressure was really going, like I
- 1:29:35Speaker 1: was really warm. As I was live, I was trying
- 1:29:37Speaker 1: to move where I could lose connection, and all of
- 1:29:39Speaker 1: a sudden, I'm sorry, we lost you, guys. It didn't
- 1:29:42Speaker 1: I didn't get lucky. So I literally had to watch
- 1:29:45Speaker 1: the dog go over it. And finally, while encouraging it's
- 1:29:48Speaker 1: a game of hot and cold, as she got warmer,
- 1:29:50Speaker 1: she got closer to it. I find it, find it,
- 1:29:53Speaker 1: find it, find it, and I'm picking it up with
- 1:29:54Speaker 1: this tone of voice. And as I say that, every
- 1:29:56Speaker 1: dog in the room just picks his head up, because
- 1:29:58Speaker 1: that tone is what signals to them there's something there.
- 1:30:01Speaker 1: And we developed that during drills, and so as soon
- 1:30:04Speaker 1: as that dog got close enough to find it, and
- 1:30:06Speaker 1: she did find it, and it took a long time,
- 1:30:08Speaker 1: and in my younger years, with less experience and understanding
- 1:30:12Speaker 1: of the word patients, I'd have been pissed, and I'd
- 1:30:15Speaker 1: have picked it up myself, and I'd have gotten negative
- 1:30:17Speaker 1: with her, and I said, come on, Ellie, Ellie, come on,
- 1:30:19Speaker 1: I've trained you to do this, and my tone would
- 1:30:21Speaker 1: have changed and the frustration would come out, and my
- 1:30:24Speaker 1: dog would have left that situation taking steps backwards. And
- 1:30:28Speaker 1: apparently we weren't very far in the first place. So
- 1:30:31Speaker 1: how much far? How far back can you go when
- 1:30:34Speaker 1: you're not very far in the beginning. So I had
- 1:30:38Speaker 1: to take a deep breath and I had to go, Okay,
- 1:30:40Speaker 1: that was one. Let's do it again. She did it
- 1:30:42Speaker 1: again on the second one. But after the third, the fourth,
- 1:30:45Speaker 1: the fifth, they she did it every She struggled, and
- 1:30:49Speaker 1: I found little things that she improved on, and I
- 1:30:51Speaker 1: found little things that she got better at, and then
- 1:30:53Speaker 1: I built off of that. And now we're into a
- 1:30:55Speaker 1: second season, and will she find I look at this
- 1:30:58Speaker 1: season as a great opportunity to simply extend my training
- 1:31:02Speaker 1: with her. That's it. And so if it takes five years,
- 1:31:05Speaker 1: here's the deal. Your dog is gonna hunt for until
- 1:31:07Speaker 1: it's twelve, thirteen years old, and so good like it
- 1:31:10Speaker 1: might lift it's fifteen, but you're gonna get some good
- 1:31:12Speaker 1: years in the field. So if you I was gonna say, so,
- 1:31:16Speaker 1: is it not too late? Like can I can I?
- 1:31:18Speaker 1: Can I resurrect this situation, your dog is your dog
- 1:31:22Speaker 1: is not even hit its prime yet for sure. And
- 1:31:25Speaker 1: and so what I think the key is is take
- 1:31:28Speaker 1: instead of looking at with the with the idea or
- 1:31:31Speaker 1: the philosophy of he's already what is he six? Yeah,
- 1:31:34Speaker 1: I think he's sex. He'll be seven, he'll be seven
- 1:31:37Speaker 1: and a month and a half. Instead of saying he's
- 1:31:40Speaker 1: already six almost seven, I lost four or five good
- 1:31:44Speaker 1: years of hunting, I would say he's almost he's six,
- 1:31:49Speaker 1: he's almost seven. I've got six years left to get better. Now.
- 1:31:53Speaker 1: That's that's like that takes macro patients like you have
- 1:31:57Speaker 1: to be patient to have that approach, because what have
- 1:32:00Speaker 1: you got to lose? Like if you don't, you're gonna
- 1:32:02Speaker 1: have six seven more years of nothing, or you can
- 1:32:07Speaker 1: start to work. And you know what, here's here's the
- 1:32:08Speaker 1: funny thing. You you said you found three sheds in
- 1:32:12Speaker 1: those couple of years in Michigan, right spots where he
- 1:32:16Speaker 1: was with me up. Yeah, So if you find if
- 1:32:19Speaker 1: you put in that was over a couple of year period.
- 1:32:22Speaker 1: So let's just average that out. I'm a numbers guy.
- 1:32:25Speaker 1: Let's average that out. It's one per year. So if
- 1:32:27Speaker 1: over the next five years your dog. That would be
- 1:32:32Speaker 1: mean You're you're on pace, a blistering pace for five, right,
- 1:32:36Speaker 1: and I don't. I'm laughing at it because I'm going,
- 1:32:38Speaker 1: you know what, I'm in the exact same boat if
- 1:32:40Speaker 1: I stay here, like I have to go to good
- 1:32:41Speaker 1: spots to right now. And that's the thing is that
- 1:32:43Speaker 1: I because of how I soured on it, I just stopped.
- 1:32:47Speaker 1: I stopped stopped taking him on the out of state
- 1:32:49Speaker 1: trips because like, he's just a hassle. He's just gonna
- 1:32:51Speaker 1: run around and get distracted and embarrass me and so
- 1:32:54Speaker 1: I and that's kept me from taking him to the
- 1:32:56Speaker 1: shed rich environments. That has then further heard of training
- 1:32:58Speaker 1: and it's a vicious like that's how exactly, that's how
- 1:33:01Speaker 1: you develop a man. So you got five at a
- 1:33:04Speaker 1: pace of one per year. Over the next five years,
- 1:33:06Speaker 1: you're you're you're gonna hit five. Let's just say you
- 1:33:09Speaker 1: keep up your average and you get to five. If
- 1:33:12Speaker 1: your dog finds two in the next five years, look
- 1:33:16Speaker 1: at what it did to the percentage of sheds you phone,
- 1:33:19Speaker 1: Like if you find if you find one a year
- 1:33:21Speaker 1: and your dog finds one a year, you doubled your production.
- 1:33:25Speaker 1: Now it's people don't Yeah, but you only phone one? Yeah,
- 1:33:29Speaker 1: but so did you, like you know, like doubling your
- 1:33:33Speaker 1: production is excellent? Like that is so good? Like you you.
- 1:33:39Speaker 1: I just think people have to be realistic with the
- 1:33:41Speaker 1: idea shed dogs that are trained regardless of good batter
- 1:33:46Speaker 1: and different trains. Shed dogs don't fill the back of
- 1:33:49Speaker 1: the truck while you sip coffee. It doesn't work that way.
- 1:33:52Speaker 1: I wish it did. It doesn't like there have to
- 1:33:55Speaker 1: be sheds there in the first place. And so when
- 1:33:58Speaker 1: you when you like, everyone has relative goals, and I
- 1:34:02Speaker 1: think some of the people that are listening right now
- 1:34:04Speaker 1: that might have had some circles. We've got shed Raley
- 1:34:06Speaker 1: coming up this weekend, and I go, if you've never
- 1:34:08Speaker 1: found a shed before, your goal shouldn't be it's shed rally.
- 1:34:12Speaker 1: And I saw a guy on Instagram post a dozen
- 1:34:14Speaker 1: that he found. Lad that's a like, like, that's there's
- 1:34:17Speaker 1: very few people doing that. So if your goal is
- 1:34:20Speaker 1: to match what you saw the guy on Instagram or
- 1:34:22Speaker 1: Facebook post with his four month old dog, that is
- 1:34:26Speaker 1: first off, man, that's great if they're doing it, but
- 1:34:29Speaker 1: that's not you, And really, who cares what they're doing?
- 1:34:31Speaker 1: Like we have to go all I want, Like, my
- 1:34:33Speaker 1: goal is going to be if you've never found a shed,
- 1:34:37Speaker 1: find one, find one, and maybe the dog picks it up,
- 1:34:41Speaker 1: or maybe it doesn't pick it up, but gain something
- 1:34:44Speaker 1: out of it positive and then you build on that.
- 1:34:47Speaker 1: That's that's all we do. That's all I do with
- 1:34:49Speaker 1: these dogs. Yeah, that it makes a lot of sense. Dude,
- 1:34:55Speaker 1: it's it's you. You You are not He is not
- 1:34:58Speaker 1: a loss, cause he is. It goes back to short falls,
- 1:35:01Speaker 1: and the short falls usually come back to us as handlers,
- 1:35:05Speaker 1: and it's nobody's fault. Like, that's not your fault, mark, Like,
- 1:35:07Speaker 1: how did you? Like you did? I guarantee you and
- 1:35:09Speaker 1: I can tell and I can hear it in your voice.
- 1:35:13Speaker 1: You did everything you knew to try to find success
- 1:35:17Speaker 1: with them. And it's human nature when it doesn't work
- 1:35:20Speaker 1: to become frustrated. And it's also human nature to go
- 1:35:24Speaker 1: I feel like I'm wasting my time in a world
- 1:35:26Speaker 1: of efficiency and productivity, I can't afford to do that.
- 1:35:30Speaker 1: And like you said, it's more of a hassle to
- 1:35:32Speaker 1: bring them on the on the trips. If you look
- 1:35:34Speaker 1: at the shed trips as training opportunities, instead of shed trips.
- 1:35:37Speaker 1: It's not now, it's a different now. You have a
- 1:35:40Speaker 1: different outlook on things like I look at I look
- 1:35:42Speaker 1: at failures. That I can look at failures and I
- 1:35:45Speaker 1: can bitch about it and I can go made a
- 1:35:47Speaker 1: mistake or I can look at a failure and I
- 1:35:49Speaker 1: can go, there's a great opportunity for me to learn,
- 1:35:51Speaker 1: Like it's it's how you, it's how you, it's it's
- 1:35:54Speaker 1: just your approach, how you, how you go about each
- 1:35:57Speaker 1: of those situations. So, so what do you think? And
- 1:36:00Speaker 1: given I mean, we're it's it's early March, just prime
- 1:36:03Speaker 1: shed hunting season. I haven't even really been taking him
- 1:36:09Speaker 1: with me this year walking around just because this year
- 1:36:12Speaker 1: I've just been whatever. I'll just go out myself and
- 1:36:14Speaker 1: sometimes he walks with me when it's close to home,
- 1:36:16Speaker 1: but when I'm traveling, he hasn't come with me. But
- 1:36:18Speaker 1: now you've got me really fired up again about it,
- 1:36:20Speaker 1: which is good. Um, yeah, exactly. So are there any
- 1:36:25Speaker 1: specific drills or things I should try? You you mentioned
- 1:36:28Speaker 1: a handful of different things, but is there anything that
- 1:36:30Speaker 1: knowing what you know about what I have done with
- 1:36:32Speaker 1: him so far, what he has positively responded to, is
- 1:36:34Speaker 1: there anything I should be doing from a training perspective
- 1:36:36Speaker 1: to try to ramp him up? Or should I just
- 1:36:38Speaker 1: just bring him along with me now and just praise
- 1:36:41Speaker 1: him a lot when we find one and all the above? Easy,
- 1:36:45Speaker 1: easy answer, all above, and the idea of you know,
- 1:36:47Speaker 1: I thought you were going down the road. If it's
- 1:36:49Speaker 1: already you know it's already marching like this is prime
- 1:36:52Speaker 1: like in the next before between right now, because I
- 1:36:54Speaker 1: don't know that they've all shed. We jumped a buck
- 1:36:56Speaker 1: an eyo last year that was or last weekend that
- 1:36:58Speaker 1: was carrying both sides. I know some are I would
- 1:37:00Speaker 1: say the majority now have shed, but like there are
- 1:37:03Speaker 1: some that will hold for the next couple of weeks.
- 1:37:05Speaker 1: But within between right now and green up when it
- 1:37:10Speaker 1: starts to get green is prime, like it's this is
- 1:37:13Speaker 1: this is it? Man? This is like? And so I
- 1:37:15Speaker 1: thought you were gonna say, you know, we're already there,
- 1:37:17Speaker 1: and you know, is it too late to worry about
- 1:37:20Speaker 1: getting something out of the balance of this year? I
- 1:37:22Speaker 1: tell people this when they asked me when do you
- 1:37:25Speaker 1: start training? Like, and that's a generalized question of when
- 1:37:28Speaker 1: you start training when they're you know, when you when
- 1:37:29Speaker 1: they're puppies, and and when do you start this? And
- 1:37:31Speaker 1: when you start that? I tell people right away, first off,
- 1:37:34Speaker 1: forget about time. Time doesn't matter to the dogs, shouldn't
- 1:37:36Speaker 1: matter to you, like we just we check. We sweep
- 1:37:39Speaker 1: that away. Don't worry about the time. What I think,
- 1:37:42Speaker 1: what I tell people is the time to start is
- 1:37:45Speaker 1: the beginning, Like today's the beginning. Like my dad used
- 1:37:48Speaker 1: to tell me, today's the first day of the rest
- 1:37:50Speaker 1: of your life, like it was this big thing. It
- 1:37:51Speaker 1: was a big joke that he'd tell me every morning,
- 1:37:53Speaker 1: and and I I was, you know, I didn't need
- 1:37:56Speaker 1: to hear it every morning, But I use it today
- 1:37:59Speaker 1: in my all myself that because I go, you know what,
- 1:38:02Speaker 1: if you want to get to the end, like everyone
- 1:38:05Speaker 1: wants to get to the end. We all want to
- 1:38:06Speaker 1: get to the end. We want I'm telling you right
- 1:38:08Speaker 1: now that the process is the part that I enjoy
- 1:38:11Speaker 1: more than the end these days. And I never was.
- 1:38:14Speaker 1: I wasn't always like that, but now I am. So
- 1:38:17Speaker 1: we all want to get to the end, and I'd
- 1:38:18Speaker 1: like to get to the end too. I just don't
- 1:38:19Speaker 1: know if my end is ever an end, Like I
- 1:38:21Speaker 1: just think that I don't know. We ever get everything
- 1:38:23Speaker 1: out of them. So we all want to get to
- 1:38:25Speaker 1: the end. And let's say the end is shed hunting.
- 1:38:28Speaker 1: The only way to get to shed hunting is to
- 1:38:31Speaker 1: start in the beginning. And that doesn't matter if your
- 1:38:35Speaker 1: dog is six years old or six weeks old. It
- 1:38:39Speaker 1: has to start in the beginning. Now, the nice part
- 1:38:41Speaker 1: about you with a six year old dog that has
- 1:38:43Speaker 1: some foundation, has has you've got your way ahead. So
- 1:38:47Speaker 1: you still have to start in the beginning. But so
- 1:38:50Speaker 1: I back way up and and I probably could spend
- 1:38:54Speaker 1: a little time with that dog, and I probably start
- 1:38:57Speaker 1: in on some some drill stuff just to get a
- 1:39:00Speaker 1: feel for it and have it get a feel for me.
- 1:39:03Speaker 1: And I'd find holes in that foundation, and those would
- 1:39:06Speaker 1: be the things that I'd work on. So in order
- 1:39:08Speaker 1: to do trailing memories are nice drill. In order to
- 1:39:10Speaker 1: do them, I need a dog that's calm, quiet and steady,
- 1:39:13Speaker 1: heels really well, preferably off lead. So if I can't
- 1:39:16Speaker 1: do that, that's where I start, because in order to
- 1:39:19Speaker 1: get my dog to the field, I have to do
- 1:39:21Speaker 1: these drills. And in order to do those drills, I
- 1:39:22Speaker 1: have to have that foundation. So we just finished. We
- 1:39:26Speaker 1: just finished a shed DVD. It's it's actually gonna it's
- 1:39:29Speaker 1: shipping right now. It's gonna be to my warehouse this week.
- 1:39:32Speaker 1: We took what we used to have, which was forty
- 1:39:34Speaker 1: eight minutes, which I thought was good. I thought it
- 1:39:36Speaker 1: was I thought it was I thought it was pretty good.
- 1:39:38Speaker 1: I did it a long time ago, and I loved
- 1:39:40Speaker 1: how you opened this up and said, is something changed
- 1:39:42Speaker 1: now from when you you know, when we last talked.
- 1:39:45Speaker 1: It has a lot of things have. So one of
- 1:39:48Speaker 1: the things is the DVD that we did that was
- 1:39:50Speaker 1: forty eight minutes. I took basically the same outline. I
- 1:39:54Speaker 1: redid it because I felt like certain parts needed more focus.
- 1:39:58Speaker 1: In certain parts, I needed to provide more, more content,
- 1:40:02Speaker 1: more content. We do these workshops. We filmed all the workshops,
- 1:40:05Speaker 1: and then we showed the chapters basically applied in the workshops.
- 1:40:09Speaker 1: It's more valuable to see someone else doing it than
- 1:40:11Speaker 1: me doing a demonstration, because their dogs and those people
- 1:40:14Speaker 1: make the same mistakes as many people do, so we
- 1:40:17Speaker 1: added that to the We turned a forty eight minute
- 1:40:19Speaker 1: DVD that included a process called hold conditioning. We turned
- 1:40:22Speaker 1: it into a three hour DVD, took out the hold
- 1:40:25Speaker 1: conditioning added it in as a separate piece and that's
- 1:40:29Speaker 1: an hour in itself. So we went from forty eight
- 1:40:31Speaker 1: minutes to four hours. And the reason is this because
- 1:40:33Speaker 1: I feel so strongly about the idea of some of
- 1:40:37Speaker 1: these details that we're talking about take a lot of
- 1:40:41Speaker 1: seeing and watching and seeing variations of But then the
- 1:40:45Speaker 1: real work comes when you execute, like you have to
- 1:40:48Speaker 1: do it, like you can watch. You can watch all
- 1:40:50Speaker 1: the DVDs you want. Your dog doesn't learn and you
- 1:40:52Speaker 1: don't and you don't learn like I think it's the handler.
- 1:40:55Speaker 1: Handler is fifty of the equation. But yeah, you can.
- 1:40:59Speaker 1: Then you can do it. You've got such a big
- 1:41:02Speaker 1: jump start on it. But I would say this, have
- 1:41:05Speaker 1: realistic expectations. So so set your goals to be like
- 1:41:09Speaker 1: coming up on the seventh birthday. So set your goals
- 1:41:11Speaker 1: by the time he's tend to pick up on antler,
- 1:41:13Speaker 1: and you likely won't be disappointed. Yeah, And I say
- 1:41:17Speaker 1: it kind of jokingly, but I'm really not because if
- 1:41:20Speaker 1: we take that approach and we have that idea going
- 1:41:23Speaker 1: into it, will never be disappointed. Yeah. And as soon
- 1:41:26Speaker 1: as if we're not disappointed, we're that much more likely
- 1:41:28Speaker 1: to succeed because your dog won't shut down because you're
- 1:41:32Speaker 1: pissed at him and you think he's fatally Yeah, and
- 1:41:35Speaker 1: and so much as we've been talking about this, even
- 1:41:37Speaker 1: more so, I'm just reflecting back on Yeah, this, this
- 1:41:40Speaker 1: is this is my issue. This is this is in
- 1:41:43Speaker 1: my head like software, I wasn't wasn't wasn't giving him
- 1:41:46Speaker 1: the chance to succeed in a lot of ways, because
- 1:41:48Speaker 1: I'd be really fired up and we do all the
- 1:41:50Speaker 1: training and I'd be pumped up, and then when he
- 1:41:53Speaker 1: didn't find the antlers and I'd get disappointed, and then
- 1:41:56Speaker 1: I would take him out less and I'd train less
- 1:41:59Speaker 1: and they was already limited pickings because there's only very
- 1:42:03Speaker 1: very very few shed and so I wasn't setting them
- 1:42:05Speaker 1: up for success. And then it wasn't taking in the
- 1:42:06Speaker 1: place of the worrylers. So it just keeps coming back
- 1:42:09Speaker 1: to me. Um. But I'll tell you what, this conversation,
- 1:42:12Speaker 1: just your encouragement has been enough to get me really excited.
- 1:42:16Speaker 1: And uh, I'm going to North Dakota for a shed
- 1:42:19Speaker 1: hunting trip later this month, and I think I'm gonna
- 1:42:21Speaker 1: bring him on it now and I love watching it,
- 1:42:25Speaker 1: and I you know, I first off, I apologize dude,
- 1:42:29Speaker 1: I get long winded and I probably really blew your
- 1:42:31Speaker 1: time limits out, but your questions makes so much sense,
- 1:42:36Speaker 1: and you're what you're asking connects I think so well
- 1:42:42Speaker 1: to what so many people are going through. I can't
- 1:42:45Speaker 1: tell you how many people are gonna go I like
- 1:42:48Speaker 1: I said before, a lot of people have had heard
- 1:42:50Speaker 1: our first podcast, and that one was totally different, Like
- 1:42:53Speaker 1: that was so that was so mechanical, and it was
- 1:42:56Speaker 1: not to say that it was bad, but it was
- 1:42:58Speaker 1: just a lot different. And so so many people that
- 1:43:02Speaker 1: I know recognized the idea of oh, you were on
- 1:43:06Speaker 1: you are on Wired to Hunt because I heard you
- 1:43:08Speaker 1: talk with Mark and we went through more historical background
- 1:43:12Speaker 1: and that kind of stuff of what what you know,
- 1:43:14Speaker 1: how we got to where we are? This man, this
- 1:43:17Speaker 1: had so much value for so many people. I guarantee
- 1:43:19Speaker 1: you there are people that are going that's exact I'm
- 1:43:23Speaker 1: in the exact same boat. And my hope is that
- 1:43:25Speaker 1: they take their takeaway is maybe I give it another shot,
- 1:43:28Speaker 1: Maybe I try it again, maybe and and go into
- 1:43:31Speaker 1: it not in comparison to the four month old that
- 1:43:36Speaker 1: you saw pick up the shed on Facebook, Like, guys,
- 1:43:40Speaker 1: that's a highlight reel and and mine don't do it.
- 1:43:44Speaker 1: So so if you want to make comparisons, compare them
- 1:43:46Speaker 1: to mind because mine miserably they fail miserably, make comparisons
- 1:43:50Speaker 1: to And we try to show it to you our
- 1:43:52Speaker 1: Facebook or Instagram, our YouTube, all that stuff. We show
- 1:43:55Speaker 1: so many times where our dogs make mistakes because I
- 1:43:59Speaker 1: just think that that's valuables, that's real, that's that's the
- 1:44:02Speaker 1: stuff that people have to see because it's what you
- 1:44:05Speaker 1: do at those moments that form your dog into what
- 1:44:08Speaker 1: they are. Wow, well, this is uh to your point, Jeremy,
- 1:44:12Speaker 1: this has been so valuable to me, like even more
- 1:44:15Speaker 1: so than I thought it was going to be coming
- 1:44:16Speaker 1: into it. I kind of I came into it like, oh,
- 1:44:19Speaker 1: this will be some good stuff, people will be interested
- 1:44:21Speaker 1: in it, but I personally wasn't invested in it. And
- 1:44:24Speaker 1: all of a sudden, my whole attitude and thought process
- 1:44:27Speaker 1: for the next month and a half has changed. So
- 1:44:30Speaker 1: thank you Jeremy for sharing so much. And I'm gonna
- 1:44:34Speaker 1: I'm gonna have to check out this DVD now and
- 1:44:36Speaker 1: and get back into stuff and get going out in
- 1:44:38Speaker 1: the woods. Yeah. I just I appreciate you man for
- 1:44:42Speaker 1: having us on I'm excited being tied into this shed
- 1:44:45Speaker 1: rally thing coming up this weekend. I just think, I
- 1:44:48Speaker 1: just think it's really it's it's really it's inspiring to me.
- 1:44:53Speaker 1: It sounds weird, but it's inspiring to me to have
- 1:44:58Speaker 1: a chance to talk to people that struggling and hope
- 1:45:01Speaker 1: that I can. Yeah, if it's if it's just simply
- 1:45:05Speaker 1: like I joke about the idea of this group that
- 1:45:07Speaker 1: I meet with um and it's not hunting dogs stuff,
- 1:45:10Speaker 1: it's just obedient stuff. But I joke with them about
- 1:45:12Speaker 1: about every three or four weeks, I almost have to
- 1:45:14Speaker 1: give a pep talk to get everybody's spirits back up.
- 1:45:17Speaker 1: And that's okay if as long as I if I'm
- 1:45:20Speaker 1: able to do it and keep them going. I feel
- 1:45:23Speaker 1: like I've really figured out. I think one of my
- 1:45:27Speaker 1: missions was to help as many dogs as I could.
- 1:45:29Speaker 1: That's why I started doing what I was doing. I've
- 1:45:31Speaker 1: realized now that I can only touch so many, but
- 1:45:34Speaker 1: it's easier for me to help people, which ultimately will
- 1:45:37Speaker 1: help dogs. And so I've become more fascinated with the
- 1:45:40Speaker 1: idea of how can I help people to help them
- 1:45:44Speaker 1: help their dogs, And and it's it's outlets like yours.
- 1:45:47Speaker 1: It's you know this, these are this is where people
- 1:45:49Speaker 1: are gonna, I hope take away from it so that
- 1:45:51Speaker 1: that's what gives me motivation, That's what keeps me going.
- 1:45:54Speaker 1: And so I appreciate you as much or more probably
- 1:45:59Speaker 1: than you appreciate this conversation. Wow, I'm glad it's been
- 1:46:03Speaker 1: a win win then, So this is that I'm literally
- 1:46:06Speaker 1: I'm literally going to hang up the phone from this
- 1:46:08Speaker 1: and go grab an antler and go out into the
- 1:46:10Speaker 1: yard with my dog and uh yeah. Now, remember dude,
- 1:46:13Speaker 1: it's a marathon, so so not a sprint, and so maintain.
- 1:46:19Speaker 1: I love to see a maintain, a steady, persistent It
- 1:46:24Speaker 1: doesn't have to be sprinting speed. It's just just real,
- 1:46:29Speaker 1: take a take a big picture of what you've got going,
- 1:46:31Speaker 1: reassess it, and then set a plan. And if I
- 1:46:33Speaker 1: can help you, I will. But that's that's the thing.
- 1:46:36Speaker 1: If people have questions, it's just it's just easy these
- 1:46:39Speaker 1: days to get to help people. Social stuff is just
- 1:46:42Speaker 1: makes it that way so so cool for people that
- 1:46:45Speaker 1: want to get more of you. R. You have a
- 1:46:47Speaker 1: ton to offer people. I mean that's obvious for anyone
- 1:46:51Speaker 1: listening to this for the first time. If people are
- 1:46:53Speaker 1: familiar with you, you have a lot of value, a
- 1:46:55Speaker 1: lot of information, a lot of help for people. Where
- 1:46:57Speaker 1: can people get all this from you? Where can they
- 1:46:59Speaker 1: find you work? They find your products, your ideas, your resources.
- 1:47:02Speaker 1: So at our everything, I try to keep it as
- 1:47:05Speaker 1: simple as possible. Everything we do is at dog Bone Hunter.
- 1:47:09Speaker 1: So like our all of our social stuff UM, our
- 1:47:13Speaker 1: YouTube page, Facebook, Instagram, those are and I just I
- 1:47:18Speaker 1: just started Snapchat a little bit and I realized the
- 1:47:20Speaker 1: value of the next There's so many people that use it,
- 1:47:23Speaker 1: like I mean, my kid uses it like a text message.
- 1:47:25Speaker 1: So I'm dabbling into that a little bit, trying to
- 1:47:29Speaker 1: figure that out. But it's really it's I found it
- 1:47:30Speaker 1: to be really convenient and easy to share a quick
- 1:47:33Speaker 1: story of what I'm doing. I did it last week
- 1:47:35Speaker 1: when we were in Iowa hunting, and I actually used
- 1:47:37Speaker 1: it more than any of our other platforms. They all
- 1:47:39Speaker 1: have their own thing, they all have their own spot
- 1:47:43Speaker 1: where I feel like they add value. So Facebook, Instagram,
- 1:47:46Speaker 1: and Snapchat, UM, and then our YouTube, which a lot
- 1:47:50Speaker 1: of our stuff ends up migrating there is at dogbone Hunter.
- 1:47:54Speaker 1: And then our website is dogbone Hunter dot com so
- 1:47:57Speaker 1: it's pretty pretty. If you remember Dogbone Hunter, you'll you'll
- 1:48:00Speaker 1: find us in in some some fashion. Perfect. Well, I'll
- 1:48:04Speaker 1: make sure to have that stuff linked as well. And
- 1:48:07Speaker 1: uh man, I just want to say thank you, Jeremy.
- 1:48:09Speaker 1: This has been a lot of fun, great conversation and
- 1:48:12Speaker 1: uh Boone, I think Boone is gonna want to send
- 1:48:15Speaker 1: you's gonna appreciate you. Yeah, he's gonna appreciate it, I
- 1:48:17Speaker 1: believe too. So excellent, man, thank you for having me.
- 1:48:20Speaker 1: Any time that you want to talk. Man, let me
