- 0:00Vox Liturgica: The propers of the day according to the 1962 Roman Missal. The feast of the Archangel Raphael, October 24 in the year of our Lord 2026. In the liturgical year Dom Prosper Gerge writes, The approach of the great solemnity which will soon be shedding upon us all the splendors of heaven seems to inspire the church with a profound recollection except for the homage she must needs pay on their own date to the glorious apostles Simon and Jude only a few feasts of simple rite break the silence of these last days of October. Our souls must be in conformity with the disposition of our common mother. It will not however be out of keeping to give a thought to the great Archangel honored today by many particular churches.
- 1:20The ministry fulfilled in our regard by the heavenly spirits is admirably set forth in the graceful scenes depicted in the history of Tobias. Rehearsing the good services of the guide and friend whom he still called his brother Azarias. The younger Tobias said to his father, Father, what wages shall we give him or what can be worthy of his benefits? He conducted me and brought me safe again. He received the money of Gabelas.
- 2:01He caused me to have my wife and he chased from her the evil spirit. He gave joy to her parents. Myself he delivered from being devoured by the fish. Thee also he hath made to see the light of heaven and we are filled with all good things through him. And when father and son endeavored after the fashion of men to return thanks to him who had rendered them such good service the angel discovered himself to them in order to refer their gratitude to their supreme benefactor.
- 2:52Bless ye the God of heaven, give glory to him in the sight of all that live, because he hath shown his mercy to you. When thou didst pray with tears and didst bury the dead, I offered thy prayer to the Lord. And because thou wast acceptable to God, it was necessary that temptation should prove thee. And now the Lord hath sent me to heal thee, and to deliver Sarah, thy son's wife, from the devil. For I am the angel Raphael, one of the seven who stand before the Lord.
- 3:43Peace be to you, fear not. Bless ye him, and sing praises to him. We too celebrate the blessings of heaven for as surely as Tobias beheld with his bodily eyes the Archangel Raphael, we know by faith that the Angel of the Lord accompanies us from the cradle to the tomb. Let us have the same trustful confidence in him. Then along the path of life more beset with perils than the road to the country of the Medes we shall be in perfect safety.
- 4:34All that happens to us will be for the best because prepared by our Lord and as though we were already in heaven, our angel will cause us to shed blessings upon all around us. We will borrow from the Ambrosian Brivary a hymn in honor of the bright Archangel. O Raphael, divinely sent guide, graciously receive the hymn we suppliants address to thee with joyful voice. Make straight for us the way of salvation, and forward our steps, lest at any time we wander astray and turn from the path to heaven, look down upon us from on high, reflect into our souls the splendor shining from above, from the Holy Father of lights. Give perfect health to the sick, dispel the darkness of the blind, and while driving away diseases of the body, give spiritual strength to our souls.
- 5:57Thou who standest before the sovereign judge plead for the pardon of our crimes, and as a trusty advocate appease the avenging wrath of the Most High. Renewer of the great battle, crush our proud enemy against the rebel spirits, give us strength, and increase our grace. To God the Father be glory, and to his only Son, together with the Paraclete Spirit, now and forevermore. Amen. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.
- 6:52Amen. The Introit. Bless the Lord, all ye His angels, you that are mighty in strength, and execute His word, hearkening to the voice of His orders. Bless the Lord, O my soul, and let all that is within me bless his holy name. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be, through all ages of ages.
- 7:32Amen. Bless the Lord all ye his angels, you that are mighty in strength, and execute His word hearkening to the voice of His orders. The Collect let us pray. O God who did send the blessed Archangel Raphael to accompany Thy servant Tobias on his journey grant that we Thy servants may ever be guarded by his care and strengthened by his aid through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, through all ages of ages. Amen.
- 8:27A lesson from the book of Tobias. In those days the angel Raphael said to Tobias, Kings have their secrets which are best kept but it is not so with God's doings. To reveal and publish them is man's privilege. A life of prayer and fasting and almsgiving is more profitable than storing up treasures of gold. Does not almsgiving preserve us from death?
- 9:05Is it not almsgiving that clears us of guilt, wins mercy for us, and everlasting life. The sinner, the wrongdoer is his own enemy. Here then is the truth of the matter. I will not hide the secret from you any longer. Did you not, Tobias, weep and pray?
- 9:36Did you not bury the dead leaving your dinner untasted keeping the bodies in your home all day and entering them at night? And all the while I presented those prayers of yours before the Lord. Then because you had won God's favor you needed to have trials to prove your worth. But then it was time for your healing. Time that Sarah your daughter-in-law should be set free from the power of the evil spirit.
- 10:18And on this errand I was sent. I, Raphael, one of the seven who stand before the Lord. The gradual. The Lord's angel Raphael seized the evil spirit and bound it fast. How great a Lord is ours.
- 10:48How magnificent his strength! Alleluia! Alleluia! With angels for my witness, I will sing of thy praise. I bow down in worship before thy sanctuary, giving thanks, O Lord, to thy name.
- 11:11Alleluia. A continuation of the Holy Gospel according to John. At that time came a Jewish feast for which Jesus went up to Jerusalem. There is a pool in Jerusalem at the Sheep Gate called in Hebrew Bethsaida with five porches under which a multitude of diseased folk used to lie. The blind, the lame, the disabled, waiting for a disturbance of the water.
- 11:53From time to time an angel of the Lord came down upon the pool, and the water was stirred up and the first man who stepped into the pool after the stirring of water recovered from whatever infirmity it was that oppressed him. The Offertory An angel stood by the altar of the temple holding a golden censer and incense was given him in plenty and the smoke of the incense of the prayers of the saints ascended up into the presence of God. The secret? We humbly entreat Thee, O Lord, to accept graciously the sacrificial gifts we offer in praise of Thee. With the angels pleading for us, grant that this offering may further our salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages.
- 13:14Amen. The Common Preface Just it is indeed and fitting, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks unto thee, O Holy Lord, Father Almighty, everlasting God, through whom the angels praise thy majesty, the dominions worship it, the powers stand in awe, the heavens and the hosts of heaven together with the blessed Seraphim joyfully do magnify. We entreat thee that thou command it be permitted us to join with them in confessing thee while we say with lowly praise. Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts, the heavens and the earth are full of thy glory. Hosanna in the highest.
- 14:18Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. The communion. O ye angels of the Lord, bless the Lord, praise and exalt him above all for ever. The post communion let us pray.
- 14:47Vouch safe, O Lord, to make the holy Archangel Raphael our helper and let him whom we believe to be continually standing before thy majesty present our poor prayers to be blessed by thee through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. In the name of the father, and of the son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen. Thanks be to God.
- 15:37Holy Archangel Raphael, pray for us.
