- 1:32the Adventures of Philip Marlowe. The Orange Dog, a startled corpse, a
- 1:37blue eyed woman, and a cryptic message scrolled by a dying man with the
- 1:40pieces of a Chinese puzzle. It wouldn't fit together until I found out what
- 1:45was deadly about the Orange Dog. Well, the pen of Raymond Chandler,
- 1:49outstanding author of crime fiction, comes his most famous character as CBS presents The
- 1:56Adventures of Philip Marlowe. And now with Gerald Moore starred as Philip Marlowe,
- 2:09we bring you tonight's exciting story The Orange Dog. By six, in the
- 2:27evening of a very slow day, I had resigned myself to the business of
- 2:30no business. So I took my feet down from my desk, switched off
- 2:35the lights, and started out the door for home, with the prospect of
- 2:38a nice, quiet evening ahead of me. But I didn't make it even
- 2:42as far as the door. Oh hello, Philip marlow Now, my name
- 2:50is Shelly Martin. I'm an eighty four to twelve lost peenus of private residence.
- 2:53I want you to come out here right away. My sister is in
- 2:57a jam nasty one. Well, miss Martin. As a matter of fact,
- 3:00I was just closing up for the night. That was you. I
- 3:01need the services of a private detective right now, this minute, and I
- 3:06prepared to pay for them there are plenty of others in town. Are you
- 3:08coming or not? Yeah? Yeah, okay, And thanks for the reminder.
- 3:14That's me. You hear sprinting at your front walk. That's much better.
- 3:16And Marlow, bring your brains along, you're going to need them.
- 3:28And that was the end of my quiet evening. But I just couldn't resist
- 3:31those government engravings of mister Lincoln. So I drove down to west and turned
- 3:36off on Los Pheless and found the number eighty four to twelve. The yard
- 3:39was an overgrown tangle of perennial plants losing their battle with the weeds. It
- 3:44was like a girl in a strapless evening garden with her hair up in curlers.
- 3:47However, I could see a light through the Venetian blinds, and the
- 3:51door bell worked with a resonant two tone chime that caused the door to open
- 3:54just far enough to allow a pair of eyes so blue they were almost purple
- 4:00to peek out of me. Yes, what is it? I am delivering
- 4:03that private detective you ordered? Oh, Marlow, come in, thanks,
- 4:10sit down, won't you? Thanks again? All right, what's the next
- 4:14move. It's about my kid's sister. She's involved with a man named lou
- 4:17Horner. San Francisco broke her. She's quite deeply involved. I'm afraid.
- 4:23Oh, you see, some very strange things are going on, Marlow,
- 4:27and my sister is a naive kid caught right in the middle of them.
- 4:30Yeah, I see what sort of strange things, miss Martin. Shelley sweet
- 4:34Well, to begin with, when I arrived from San Francisco today, my
- 4:36sister called me and asked me to meet her here in this house. When
- 4:40I got here, the lights were on, the radio was playing, and
- 4:44the front door was open, but the place was deserted. Whose house is
- 4:46it, honors? No, I think she said. It belongs to a
- 4:49friend of his who's in Europe. Now, this hornor person uses it when
- 4:53he's in Los Angeles. Well, couldn't they have stepped out for a while?
- 4:57You know, you don't look at side, Shelley. But maybe you're
- 4:59just panicky. No, I'm not being panicky? All right, all right,
- 5:01where's the nasty jam right behind the couch? Take a look? Okay,
- 5:08but you know, I, oh, I see what you mean.
- 5:13Who is he, Shelley? How to get here? Maybe as Horner?
- 5:15I don't know. I tried to search him, but I couldn't. It
- 5:19wouldn't have helped anyway. Over shot him, cleaned him out, no wallet,
- 5:23no papers, nothing. I found this magazine lying under his hand.
- 5:27Look here, he must have written this just before he died. Where's that
- 5:31here? It says, call Marion tonight about the orange dog a foe,
- 5:39his dog a foe for what. That's why I called you, Phil.
- 5:43Marion is my sister, and whatever the orange dog of foe is, it
- 5:46must be awfully important. We've got to find out what it means, Phil,
- 5:49for Marion's sake. So far it means murder, honey, and that's
- 5:51what the curt Well all right, call them, but keep Marion's name out
- 5:58of it. A thing like this could destroyer. Look, maybe she pulled
- 6:01a trigger on our friend here. Maybe, but I don't think so.
- 6:05She's a sweet kid, Phil, Give her a break. If I'm wrong,
- 6:10I swear I'll help you bring her in myself. That's fair enough,
- 6:15Okay, Shelly's a deal. It makes just as much sense as the orange
- 6:17dog full, but no more. After I checked as far as I could
- 6:29on my client and set her home, which was the Village twelve with the
- 6:30Wilshire Gardens Hotel, I ripped the general squeegy tire ad with a message scribbled
- 6:34across it out of the magazine, pulled it up and stuck in my pocket.
- 6:39Next, I call Liukenedy Barrett Homicide and told him where I'd found a
- 6:43body, probably named Lou Horner, leaving out all the details about Shelley Marion
- 6:46and the Orange dog. And I started out the door, but that back.
- 6:50As a shadow swim across the walk, I caught a glimpse of a
- 6:55large, ugly head of long, dirty hair set on a small, ugly
- 6:58body that was moving fast. By the time I got out on the walk,
- 7:01long hair was already putting mileage on a green coop with a broken tail
- 7:04light. It winked mockingly as and went out of sight. So I got
- 7:09in my car and headed for New Chinatown. It was a logical place to
- 7:13get some information regarding a Chinese dog. I saw a light filtering through a
- 7:18bingy window, huminating the words James Tang dealer in oriental curios. Inside the
- 7:26musty shop, a little man dressed in a black kimono drifted phone softly.
- 7:31Yes, I think perhaps you can help me, huh. I am honored
- 7:38to be able to help, would bring fragrance of plum blossoms to my nostrils,
- 7:43carpet of rose petals to my humble floor, and a thousand blessings upon
- 7:46my head. That was very pretty. Tell me what is the dog of
- 7:49foe? The dog of four? Why? Why this this fantastic creature here
- 7:58is called dog of phol? His fierce eyes and snarling mouth? How to
- 8:03frighten away evil spirits from temples and Buddha? Why do you say called the
- 8:07dog of pol Amateur collectors and auctioneers have named him that it sounds exotic to
- 8:15ysh customers. Actually is a lion, the lion of Korea? I see
- 8:20tang. Would you happen to have an orange dog of phone? Very strange
- 8:26that you should ask that, my friend strange? Why written number one?
- 8:31There is no authentic orange dog a pooh. That's a good reason. Why
- 8:35not? Because two Buddhists, orange is color of sorrow. The piece you
- 8:41speak of could not possibly be authentic. What's raised number two? You are
- 8:45second person to inquire after this non existent orange dog of poo within the last
- 8:50few minutes? Was it an ugly little man with long hair? Quite contrary,
- 8:54it was very pretty girl with short hair. Was her name Marion.
- 8:58She made point of not leaving her name. Now it proved something, however,
- 9:03my friend, all Chinese proverb, loosely translated says, a little knowledge
- 9:13is the instrument of a fool. There were nine other curio shops in the
- 9:26neighborhood, so I started making the rounds for a non existent orange dog of
- 9:30foe and a girl who was interested in one. From the first three shops
- 9:33I got a fast horse laugh and the fact that the girl was still ahead
- 9:35of me. The next two added an insular piece and a total blank on
- 9:39the day, and from the sixth called Saxon's, a glossy, well ordered
- 9:43place on West seventh Street. The only effect was a coldly curious raised eyebrow.
- 9:48A man in front of me, whom I took to be mister Saxon
- 9:50himself, was a gaunt white Russian with a high naked head the color of
- 9:54warm parafine. The slender fingers played nervously with each other as we talked see
- 9:58orange dog of four. Yes, I have heard of such a piece.
- 10:03I think it would be porcelains. Probably this is your business. Who has
- 10:07it? Mister Saxon? Can you tell me no, No, I'm sorry.
- 10:09I believe I heard this orange dog mentioned just once somewhere down in the
- 10:15village. But I'm sure I could never remember who spoke of it or when,
- 10:18no idea of its value. Then huh, now that you mentioned it,
- 10:22I seem to remember the figure twenty thousand? You mean, yeah,
- 10:26how much in American money? I am speaking of American money. It would
- 10:30be an importation from China. You know, how could it be worth that
- 10:33much? It's not even authentic, mister Saxon, partent. You seem to
- 10:37know a good deal more than I about this orange dog. Possibly one would
- 10:41have to see it to appreciate its value. Yeah, tell me it's a
- 10:45girl. But in here a night looking for this orange dog? The girl
- 10:48I know? Now anybody named Marian? Marian Marian? No, there is
- 10:52no one in my acquaintance by that name. But why do you ask?
- 10:54Because Marian has quite an interest in the orange dog. I have a feeling
- 10:58that make a great team if we could get him together. I see,
- 11:01And what is your name? Say? It's not full manchew, mister Saxon.
- 11:05Good night. Saxon's expression didn't change. I turned and walked out of
- 11:15the place, and then, because with both of us using double talk,
- 11:16the conversation was boond at deteriorate. At least I had found out that the
- 11:20orange dog befoe existence. It was going for a very high figure, especially
- 11:24for a phony. And it didn't take an abacus to figure out that Saxon
- 11:28knew more than he told me. Now, I started up the sidewalk for
- 11:31the next brickup Brack and poor im when I saw something park on the side
- 11:35street which brought me to a halt. It was that green coop with a
- 11:39broken tail light. I went over to it, found it empty, and
- 11:43stuck my head inside to check the registration card for long Hair's real name.
- 11:46Yeah, it was a very foolish move because long Hair at that very moment
- 11:50proughted my kidney with the muzzle of at thirty eight, and neither he nor
- 11:54a gun had a sense of humor. All right, mis, a wise
- 11:56guy, come on, walk, You and me are gone up the alley
- 12:00here. It doesn't matter. Don't you feel it home in the light?
- 12:03Shut up. I don't like it much anyways, But he's off with a
- 12:05smart science. Okay, this is fun of woll mis. The wise guy
- 12:11did you find what you're looking for. You me and the orange dog,
- 12:13Shorty. The answers, no, yes dog. So that's where the plate
- 12:16shot? What plates? You're working for Horner? You don't know what places
- 12:22look chim when you get your next haircut. Have your brains dusted off.
- 12:26Nobody works for Horner anymore. Horne is dead. That just what? What's
- 12:30the surprise act for? You saw the body you were sneeping around that house
- 12:33on lost Felis, In fact, you might have killed Horna yourself. I
- 12:37thought he wasn't Hornaway honor three times the size that I lost Felis. He's
- 12:39bored. Oh so he's so dumb he can't remember his own phone up.
- 12:45I'll look at for all the street where they follow, isn't I'm sorry,
- 12:48Joe, I want I'll blow your brain shirt, all right, Come on,
- 12:58mister wise guy, tell me what Horne has got on his mind?
- 13:00You know, all right? I saw you taking orders from this girl,
- 13:03I mean Shelley Martin. Who else? But maybe it meant Marion? Who
- 13:09was Marion Shelley Marttin's sister. And don't let her worry. Marian's got the
- 13:11orange dog getting out of her hand. That they funny muster. It's just
- 13:16peculiar because Shelley Martin don't have a sister right now, so it seems like
- 13:22you're a very mixed up character. In fact, mister wise guy, you're
- 13:24so mixed up you're not good to me at all. Get over there with
- 13:28the rest of that. I took my time getting up. A dirty,
- 13:41long haired little man was gone my headache and a rabbit giving me with a
- 13:45pistol barrel, and I was disgusted with myself try dirty, disgusted like a
- 13:50drunke at sunrise because a nasty little jerk with an oversized head and a blue
- 13:52eyed dynamo with auburn hair at me jumping through hoops like a trained ape.
- 13:58He stood in the alley and swirre at myself until the futility of that routine
- 14:01dawned on me, and I decided to go hunting. But I made one
- 14:05stop first at a telephone to at least get a barrow off my conscience.
- 14:16Hollo, lieutenant, I just found out that body and lost philis isn't horner.
- 14:20I that an hour ago. Huh, the body isn't horn, isn't
- 14:24horn, It is no broke. He's account of it or a big one
- 14:26though. The dead man was a treasury agent, aamed slat who was closing
- 14:30in on on it. So if you've got anything you haven't told video,
- 14:33better get it off your chest. At this point, it's a pleasure girl
- 14:35named Shelly Martin's calling the signals about now and she could be found at Villa
- 14:39twelve, Wiltshire Gardens Hotel. Yeah, hurry, you'll just about meet me
- 14:43Therey Barra. No wait, suppose you go alone and find out what you
- 14:46can't first. That's a switch I'll follow in half an hour. Let's not
- 14:50freeze her up, mallow, Let's keep her talking. Okay, okay,
- 14:52Bora, that's easy for it. She's got a FOURD tongue, only this
- 14:56time it's going to wig strictly on the straight and narrow. I guarantee it.
- 15:11In just a moment we will return to the second act of the Adventures

- 15:50Ce are fifty Broad Street, New York City. And now with our star
- 15:58Gerald Moore, we return to the second act Philip Marlowe and Tonight's story The
- 16:02Orange Dog. When I pointed my car toward the Wilship Gardens and a beautiful
- 16:12liar named Shelley Martin, I was sure of two things. The plates that
- 16:17long Haired wise cracked about just before he piled me into a row of garbage
- 16:19cans were the engraved kind that counterfeit is used to make money the easy way.
- 16:23And second, both long Hair and lou Harna were racing for the plates,
- 16:27as well as the Orange Dog, which could be one and the same
- 16:30thing. But twenty minutes later, as I pulled up near a Villa twelve,
- 16:33which was strips of yellow light raised voices drifting out of half open Venetian
- 16:37blinds, I forgot about the gentleman involved and concentrated on a lady who didn't
- 16:42have a sister, called Marion. I went around to the back of the
- 16:45villa, where I found the service door unlocked in the kitchen beyond dark.
- 16:48And when I entered and quietly moved to a spot near the living room where
- 16:52I could see Shelley snapping at a pompous, excitable man with a red face.
- 16:56I figured that a little leaves dropping might pay off. I'm here in
- 17:00Los Angeles. Is there anything wrong with that, mister Horner? Yes?
- 17:03Everything. Why I wouldn't even have known you were in town if I hadn't
- 17:07gone back to the place on Lost Philis where I saw you and some man
- 17:10having a delightful little chit chat over the body of the tea man. Yes,
- 17:15is that who he was? Meddle, some fool I caught snooping from
- 17:18my papers then, and you killed him, Lou, Of course I killed
- 17:22him. I had to. No, I'll stop asking questions and get out
- 17:25of here, because this is business, not pleasure, Shelly, and that
- 17:27leaves no room for you. Oh Marion, What do you know about Marion?
- 17:32Not enough for what I do know. I don't like look, Lou,
- 17:37who is Marian and what does she mean to you? Marian means money
- 17:40to me, Shelley, nothing more. So just leave me alone here so
- 17:42that I can make a call according to schedule. A call, Lou.
- 17:47That's the matter of Shelley. Behind you, Lou, there in the garden.
- 17:53The crash through a closed window didn't stop until I got the Horner,
- 17:56who grabbed his chest and dropped to the floor even before the glos quit flying.
- 18:00And by the time I got outside where the shot had come from,
- 18:03I found nothing but a little wind rustling a lot of trees. And I
- 18:07got back to Shelley and the blood of a tweet on the carpet. Hannah
- 18:10was already dead. Marlow follow the man out. There was Henry Peel,
- 18:14Peel something in long hair and dirty clothes. Yes, I met him in
- 18:17Horner's office once. Lou said he was a broker from chicag Come on,
- 18:19both Peel and Horner are counterfeiters. What blue accounterfeit? That's right. Never
- 18:25mind the carefully arched eyebrows, Honey, they mean nothing but Marlowe, I
- 18:27swear I never knew that Horner was anything but a broker, A broken maltreating
- 18:30poor sister Marion. You're a liar, Shelley about Marion, Yes, I
- 18:36haven't even got a sister. But from there on out, I'm telling the
- 18:38truth. Film and tell some more and fast. All right here it is
- 18:42blue. Horner's been my boy and check book for the past year and a
- 18:48half. But about a month ago he suddenly stopped being very attendive, and
- 18:52I couldn't figure out why. So you decided to keep your big blue eyes
- 18:56wide open exactly, And it paid off because I found out that one he
- 19:02had taken better than twenty thousand dollars out of his bank account, two that
- 19:06he was coming down he had a Los Angeles and three then a knightem named
- 19:08Marian might be beating your time, Yes, And that part of it upset
- 19:11me plenty until ten minutes ago. But then I found out that Horner here
- 19:17was a murderer and that Marlow I don't buy three cheers for the all American
- 19:21girl. Oh skip it, Marlow. I'll live my way, you live
- 19:22yours. Don't worry, honey, nobody wants to change places with you.
- 19:26Hey, hey, look, why does Horna wear a little rubber band on
- 19:30his little figure? Do you know. Oh, he had a bad memory,
- 19:33used every kind of gadget in the books to keep himself from forgetting things,
- 19:37especially numbers. For example, that rubber band might mean ten o'clock.
- 19:42How do you figure like five and five? The fingers on each hand reading
- 19:47from left to right, use things like that. Wait a minute, Hornor
- 19:52was going to make a call a Marion just now, And the message the
- 19:55tea man left was call Marion tonight about the Orange Dog? A pole baby?
- 20:00Where's your phone? Fast? Come on, it's quarter after ten already?
- 20:02What's out there in the hall? MANA what are you talking about?
- 20:06A line? Honey, A line and your ex sister Marian. This has
- 20:18lou Horner. Mister Saxon, I know I'm some fifteen minutes late with this
- 20:22call, but I'd still like to see you about the Orange Dog of Foles.
- 20:27The Orange Dog is here waiting for you. Good. I'll be right
- 20:30over. Who is mister Saxon? A man very close to a lot of
- 20:34trouble Shelley. Now look, you wait right here for the law, and
- 20:37in particular one lieutenanty Borough. Tell him nothing but the truth about Horner and
- 20:41what he meant to you in dollars and cents. And you may be all
- 20:42right, But where are you going? Mana to a curio shop on West
- 20:45seventh Street, to see, among other things, the orange dog of full
- 21:03You are the mister Hornor who called Yeah yeah, also the one who was
- 21:07here this afternoon, you remember, Oh yeah, Well, I I'm sorry
- 21:10I didn't call you a ten, mister Saxon, according to schedule. I
- 21:14hope it hasn't inconvenienced you. No, that's quite all right, mister Horner.
- 21:15One moment, sir, doesn't matter. Is anything wrong tonight? See
- 21:23my age, mister Saxon. I am so please, mister Horner. Don't
- 21:27make a single stupid move? What mine? Why the gun? Mister Saxon,
- 21:32I promise not to bite the orange dog. You won't even touch the
- 21:34orange dog. No, who are you? Now? We've been all through
- 21:38that. I'm Horner Saxon, Lou Horner of San Francisco. You're not Hornor
- 21:41would have had no reason to wander around curio shops as you did this afternoon,
- 21:45asking any and everybody about the orange dog. No, once more,
- 21:49who are you? And where is the real Lou Hornor? All right,
- 21:52we'll take him in that order I'm a private detective named Philip Mallow, and
- 21:56lou Horner is a copse. But also I'm a good friend of yours because
- 22:00I'm going to give you a little bit of advice for free. Call it
- 22:03quits, Buster lickt. What are you talking about? Marlow the tea for
- 22:07treasury man named Slade. Before he died, Saxon he talked, I see
- 22:11and believe me, he said, enough to put you away. Orange dogs
- 22:14are as popular as life savers. What do you say, Saxon? We
- 22:17play it smart, very well, Marlowe. We will play it smart,
- 22:19my kind of smart. Now turn around and walk through that curtain there.
- 22:26I want to show you some orange dog maybe, yes, the orange dog
- 22:30off fall. I want you to see it for yourself before you die.
- 22:40Saxon said, die like it already happened. After he relieved me of the
- 22:44comforting bulge of the gun in my pocket, marched me to a large windowless
- 22:47room that was a little duck in the lining of an eight ball. He
- 22:51told me to stand very still, and he turned on a single lamp that
- 22:53rested on a large scarred table and next to an inn ordinary shipping crate and
- 22:59cushion on all sides. It's my white wrapping paper. I finally saw the
- 23:02Orange Dog be full. It was a porcelain lion, popeyed, majestic in
- 23:11a crazy way. And also it was colored orange, bright and clear.
- 23:15But now that I'd seen it, I knew the next move was Saxon's.
- 23:18I turned to face him. It was then that I noticed the black curtain
- 23:22behind him moved slightly, and long hair quietly stepped into the room. This,
- 23:29mister Saxon did not know. Well, Marlow, now that you have
- 23:33seen the Orange Dog for your first and last time, what do you think
- 23:37of it? It takes It's just jet therdy, mister. I'll drop your
- 23:40gun before I blowed it top of your head off. Gone drop, It's
- 23:44better I sit down there and stay put. You Marlow, get across the
- 23:47room. Okay, thanks for showing up. Heel before Saxon here ran out
- 23:51of small jokes. Okay yourself, Marlow, I didn't just show up.
- 23:53I've been right behind you all the way. That's how I work. So
- 23:56what do you want for you? A couple of very fine and gray place
- 24:00that I've been after for six months now, lights which could be in the
- 24:03Orange Dog, A full no place else. But what do you think that
- 24:07maybe the late mister Horner wanted is annymo. But that's all it is.
- 24:10There are no plates for the orange dog. It is only a collector's And
- 24:12you're a liar, Sex, And I know the best way to prove that.
- 24:17Mar put that thing up and throws it against the wall. No,
- 24:19no, don't I tell you there's nothing. Go on? Okay, Peel,
- 24:25Ah, Now I will see who's right up about the plates? Seeing
- 24:30here? Nothing happy here? Ah? No? All right, Sex,
- 24:37and get up. I want to know what a place saw. So I'm
- 24:40going to count the three. That's how long you have to live if you
- 24:44don't tell me. No, no, Peel, believe me. There are
- 24:45no plates. So holl it, Peel. Wait? Here are the plates
- 24:51here in this jewel box? Look right here? And is he? Is
- 25:00he out? Marlow? Yeah, he's out, all right. He took
- 25:03a light with him too. Is there is there another lamp in here?
- 25:06Oh? No, there isn't not? Is there another gun? Why you
- 25:08sticking little? Wait a minute? Those siren saxony are heading this way?
- 25:12Police? Yeah, the police looks like sooner or later everybody gets together in
- 25:15the back room at Saxon. Everybody stays here, So I'll take this wrapping
- 25:19paper and leave now rapping paper that stuff that was around the Orange dog.
- 25:23Yes, a sample up the best grade of counterfeiting paper made Marlow, and
- 25:27that's what Warno was supposed to buy, not plate those he got a month
- 25:30ago. Still make sure a crook Saxon and one will never get past the
- 25:33front door. Oh no, we'll see about that. Marlow. Keep shooting
- 25:40Saxon in the dark. He got four shots left fifty only one now,
- 25:48Saxon, that's number six. Throw Saxon. By the time he Burrow and
- 26:03his boys, plus a half a dozen very anxious team men got into the
- 26:06room, Saxon was already coming apart at the seams. After a half hour
- 26:11of steady questioning, he split wide open and let us all to a basement
- 26:14hideout, where the teaman went wild over a few thousand sheets of A one
- 26:18counterfeiting paper. But an hour later, after Peel, who admitted murdering Lou
- 26:22Horner, and Saxon, who was ready for the nearest straight jacket, were
- 26:25both in the lock up, there was still the problem of the glib last
- 26:29from San Francisco. Finally, when Shelley, Lieutenant bar and I sed the
- 26:33green light of the globe in front of the police headquarters. I knew that
- 26:37the girl, who technically was only guilty with holding information from the police,
- 26:41was not going to spend any time in the pokey, because, after all,
- 26:45I was more or less guilty of the same thing. Besides, lieutenanty
- 26:49Burrow was still interested in the others. We allay, it looks like the
- 26:53whole business actually boils down to a single transaction between Clay Saxon, who had
- 26:59the out of hitting paper. Hello, Hannah was supposed to buy it.
- 27:03That's ready, borah. But Honnah, who must have made his contact with
- 27:06Saxon via some middleman in San Francisco, only had a telephone emburned the password
- 27:11the Orange Dog of Foe to work on here in La. But how do
- 27:12you get hold of that number? Phil from the message that t man left
- 27:15before he died. You mean you actually call someone named Mary? No,
- 27:19Honey, I just dialed Marion M. A. Madison r Io N seven
- 27:26four six six Madison seven four six six. You get it. Yeah,
- 27:33another one of Horner's screwy memory tricks, like the rubber band on his tenth
- 27:36fingers. Hey, that's pretty good, phil It's an old gimmick. Really,
- 27:40I read it in a dozen detective stories. You know, maybe I
- 27:44ought to read some of those. Well, good night, Philip. Look
- 27:48for you tomorrow night, Lieutenant Well, Shelley, I do I show you
- 27:55the way home? No, Mama, aren't you hungry or thirsty? Yeah?
- 28:00Yeah, yess I am at that. Well, I know just a
- 28:03place for us. Don Oh, it's a cute little place right smack in
- 28:07the middle of chin. Well. We got through a small Chinese dinner without
- 28:21seeing or hearing from a single orange dog, And when it came time to
- 28:25leave, I was thinking that Shelley wasn't really too bad to hit at that,
- 28:29so when she left the table to powder her nose, I started to
- 28:33my plans. But when she got back I forgot about them, because in
- 28:36the meantime she'd run into an old friend, a rich old friend who was
- 28:41all alone in the big city. I said, I didn't mind taking a
- 28:45raincheck when she explained that he was from Kansas City and a brooker at that.
- 28:48He certainly was overweight so much steak and potatoes, steaking potatoes. Wonder
- 28:56if Lindy's is still open The Adventures of Philip Marlowe, created by Raymond Chandler,

- 29:45I was hired to find a blackmail and I did, But first I
- 29:48found a badly beaten Adonis Jezebel with an accent and a man who had been
- 29:52an easy mark. A murder. Ninety minutes of unsurpassed comedy comes to you

- 30:49Columbia Broadcasting System. Welcome back, a good story in the vein of a
- 31:08lot of Marlow's where you just throw Marlow into the situation and figure out which
- 31:15shady character is truly the perpetrator in this particular case, though it seems probable
- 31:22that any or all of them might have been behind it. Interestingly enough,
- 31:29this is not the only Philip Marlow episode known as The Orange Dog. There
- 31:37was actually a title in the NBC series from nineteen forty seven called the Orange
- 31:45Dog. And I was actually searching to see if Chandler wrote that, because
- 31:48they tended to in that series to use a lot more of Chandler's stories.
- 31:53But I found that this story and that one actually both were original. The
- 32:00plot of The Orange Dog from nineteen forty seven, and this comes from Digital
- 32:06Deli FTP dot com signing from a believe in newspaper radio men loved to experiment
- 32:19with gadgets, and one of the latest will be tried out on the Philip
- 32:21Marvel Mystery program tonight at eight pm on WKBHNBC. The plot concerns a dog
- 32:29that was trained for war and his possible connection with a brutal slain. One
- 32:34of the sound effects is a high pitched dog whistle that is inaudible to the
- 32:37human ears. Engineers say that when the whistle is blown, it should make
- 32:39dogs within the range of any radio plane the program to pick up their ears
- 32:45and run to the alloud speaker. That is an interesting radio special effect.
- 32:52I'm not certain dog owners would be pleased if they got that notice, and
- 32:57that was for nineteen forty seven's The Orange Dog as opposed to nineteen forty nine's
- 33:01which entirely different plot. Well, that will do it for today. We
- 33:06will be back tomorrow with Nick Carter. Join us back here next Wednesday for
- 33:10another episode of the Adventures of Philip Marlow, and of course coming this Saturday,
- 33:16it's Dragnet. In the meantime, send your comments to Box thirteen at
