Transcript
- 0:17SPEAKER_02: It's time for the opening crack, the sideshow to the DD show we normally do, where we taste and we rank some beer.
- 0:25SPEAKER_02: What are we doing tonight, fellas?
- 0:28SPEAKER_02: How are we feeling?
- 0:28SPEAKER_02: What do we think about this?
- 0:30SPEAKER_02: We're drinking beer.
- 0:31SPEAKER_02: Love beer.
- 0:32SPEAKER_02: So it's good.
- 0:32SPEAKER_01: Give me some ale.
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: It's a good one.
- 0:34SPEAKER_02: Some ale.
- 0:35SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 0:35SPEAKER_02: What are we drinking tonight?
- 0:37SPEAKER_01: Tonight's beer is.
- 0:39SPEAKER_01: This is the citrail ale from Upslope Brewing Company in Boulder, Colorado.
- 0:45SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 0:46SPEAKER_01: Let's uh let's take a first sip.
- 0:55SPEAKER_01: It's not an Arnold Palmer.
- 0:57SPEAKER_01: Jeez, man.
- 0:58SPEAKER_01: Easy.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: No, I just I splashed.
- 1:07SPEAKER_01: That's what you get.
- 1:08SPEAKER_01: That's what you get.
- 1:10SPEAKER_01: Oh man.
- 1:12SPEAKER_01: Uh, I I like this.
- 1:13SPEAKER_01: This this the citra hops come through nice, bright, and strong, just like they should in a pale ale like this.
- 1:19SPEAKER_01: I love it.
- 1:20SPEAKER_02: I I agree.
- 1:21SPEAKER_02: That's the first thing that definitely hits my nose.
- 1:23SPEAKER_02: You can smell that.
- 1:24SPEAKER_02: It's uh definitely uh citraford, which I appreciate.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's nice and it's fresh.
- 1:32SPEAKER_02: And I think, Ross, you brought this one back, right?
- 1:35SPEAKER_02: Let's talk, uh let's talk packaging.
- 1:37SPEAKER_02: What is this what does this baby look like?
- 1:39SPEAKER_01: So this one has a nice, uh pretty basic uh can here, just red with a white stripe around it, and then the upslope logo on it with citrail ale on the bottom with the uh descriptors of floral, juicy, and brilliant.
- 1:52SPEAKER_01: And I think that is pretty accurate and on point for the most part.
- 1:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I feel like that's pretty descriptive.
- 1:57SPEAKER_02: So uh I think we mentioned this comes from Upslope Brewing in Boulder, Colorado.
- 2:02SPEAKER_02: Um, you can find more about their beers uh upslope brewing.com.
- 2:07SPEAKER_02: Uh let's talk about I swear to God, you just about said Baldur.
- 2:12SPEAKER_01: Boulder, Colorado.
- 2:13SPEAKER_02: I almost did, I'm not gonna lie.
- 2:15SPEAKER_02: This is from Baldur's Gate.
- 2:17SPEAKER_02: No, we're we're not talking about Baldur's Gate.
- 2:19SPEAKER_01: We imported it everybody.
- 2:23SPEAKER_01: Where Ross's brew is coming from.
- 2:26SPEAKER_01: I made a made a short trip over.
- 2:30SPEAKER_02: All right.
- 2:31SPEAKER_02: We're way up.
- 2:32SPEAKER_02: We we lost it.
- 2:33SPEAKER_02: Uh the rails, we got this.
- 2:35SPEAKER_02: Taste profile on this.
- 2:37SPEAKER_02: So we already mentioned that we've got some citra hops here.
- 2:40SPEAKER_02: Um, but let's kind of go through our usual cadence here.
- 2:43SPEAKER_02: Uh maltiness.
- 2:45SPEAKER_01: Uh not not much of a malt.
- 2:48SPEAKER_01: If anything, I get some like wheat notes on the back end, uh, but it's very smooth, mostly non-existent.
- 2:55SPEAKER_01: I would agree.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 2:57SPEAKER_02: All right.
- 2:57SPEAKER_02: Um hit, yeah.
- 3:00SPEAKER_02: Well, you yeah, you look pensive.
- 3:02SPEAKER_02: What did you say?
- 3:03SPEAKER_02: What do you mean?
- 3:04SPEAKER_02: How many beers have you had?
- 3:05SPEAKER_02: I was gonna say hitting on hops next, but you like approach the mic.
- 3:09SPEAKER_02: I'm like, oh, okay.
- 3:10SPEAKER_02: Uh so hops we hit on doing citrus hops.
- 3:14SPEAKER_02: Uh yes.
- 3:15SPEAKER_02: We might have talked about citrops before, but what what does that kind of carry?
- 3:19SPEAKER_02: I guess what do you guys catch from that?
- 3:20SPEAKER_01: Very florally, like an herby citrusy note or very strong herby citrusy notes.
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I it's like a tropical hop.
- 3:32SPEAKER_01: I think that's a good way to describe it.
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: I think of I don't know.
- 3:35SPEAKER_00: Uh I think southern with with this one.
- 3:38SPEAKER_01: I think I think the last time we did a pale ale, I described it as being mango-y.
- 3:42SPEAKER_01: It's uh it's like you talk about how citra ops are very like citrusy forward, but it it it doesn't come across to me as like oranges and grape grapefruit, yes, but not oranges, but it leans in that mango grapefruit.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: But a lot of times with uh pale ales, you get so much grapefruit, and this one isn't no, it's not that straight grape is not grapefruit, yeah.
- 4:04SPEAKER_00: Uh on their website it says it's got a semi-dry finish, and I think that's a pretty good description of this one as well.
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: I would agree with that.
- 4:11SPEAKER_00: Like if you're gonna compare it to like a wine, it's like a more of a dry white.
- 4:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 4:16SPEAKER_02: I definitely agree with that.
- 4:17SPEAKER_02: You can kind of catch that on the end of it.
- 4:18SPEAKER_02: It doesn't kind of stay coated across your tongue, it does have a drier finish.
- 4:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it and I think it has like a it stays on your palate longer than the the first paleo we had seemed to finish really quickly, and this one this one lingers on your palate, and I I think it might be like that heavy citra hops because it's it that bitterness on the back of my palate sticks around for quite a while, I feel like.
- 4:41SPEAKER_02: Oh, what color is this one?
- 4:44SPEAKER_00: Uh it's a deep gold, according to the website.
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: We use dark hands.
- 4:49SPEAKER_00: I know, I set you guys up for that one.
- 4:51SPEAKER_01: Thanks.
- 4:52SPEAKER_01: As we like look at our size, shit, it's blue.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: We don't know.
- 4:58SPEAKER_01: I don't know, hold it up to the light.
- 4:59SPEAKER_01: Maybe it'll shine through.
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: The deep gold.
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: I mean, on the website it says deep gold, and that's what a color it looked like when we poured it in.
- 5:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I I trust them.
- 5:06SPEAKER_00: Looks like a paleo.
- 5:08SPEAKER_00: You know, speaking of the website, they have like food recommendations to go with it.
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: Ooh.
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: It's like bacon cheeseburger, street tacos, or spicy Thai chicken curry.
- 5:16SPEAKER_00: I'm hungry to it.
- 5:18SPEAKER_00: Let's just go out right now.
- 5:20SPEAKER_01: Oh can we get a good bacon cheeseburger this time of night?
- 5:24SPEAKER_01: Oh.
- 5:25SPEAKER_01: Find someplace.
- 5:25SPEAKER_01: That sounds delicious.
- 5:27SPEAKER_02: Uh all right.
- 5:28SPEAKER_02: Do you guys taste any uh yeastiness in this baby?
- 5:32SPEAKER_01: No, I think I think the the hops are are strong enough that you don't pick up a lot of other floral notes in it.
- 5:37SPEAKER_01: Or not floral notes, but a lot of other flavor notes in it.
- 5:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think so.
- 5:41SPEAKER_02: And I know we we kind of hit on mouthfeel already.
- 5:44SPEAKER_02: Body-wise, what do you guys think on this?
- 5:46SPEAKER_02: Like them in the middle.
- 5:49SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's what I would say too.
- 5:51SPEAKER_01: It comes across as a as a lighter beer at the at the beginning and finishes a little stronger.
- 5:55SPEAKER_01: Um, I do think though, for a pale ale, uh, because we're gonna talk about alcohol next.
- 6:01SPEAKER_01: Alcohol content, at a 5.8, it comes in a little higher for your typical pale ales, because pale ale is typically range in that 4.4 to 5.4 ABB percentage.
- 6:10SPEAKER_01: And this one comes in at a 5.8, so it's a little bit higher.
- 6:13SPEAKER_01: And I think that's where we get that dryness for sure on the back of your palate.
- 6:17SPEAKER_02: All right, and now to tie this back into the world of DD, uh, let's hit on what pub you may find this in in Feirun.
- 6:26SPEAKER_02: Uh, who wants to kick us off?
- 6:29SPEAKER_01: I'll go.
- 6:30SPEAKER_01: Why not?
- 6:31SPEAKER_02: I I am all and told you, but that's fine.
- 6:33SPEAKER_01: You should have just done it.
- 6:34SPEAKER_01: It's all good.
- 6:35SPEAKER_01: Uh, so you are gonna find this one at the Blue Water Inn in Villackey, which is in Ravenloft.
- 6:42SPEAKER_01: And for the first time in a century, they have killed a vampire, and to celebrate, they have created the pale vein elixir.
- 6:53unknown: Ooh.
- 6:54SPEAKER_01: And they drink this because the hops remind them of the bright, warm sunshine that they no longer have because Strahd's curse is laid over this kingdom for many a century.
- 7:05SPEAKER_02: Very nice.
- 7:06SPEAKER_00: Nice.
- 7:07SPEAKER_00: Uh, for mine, I'm going across the Sea of Swords, uh and we're going to the Moonshe Isles, and we're going to the um the town of Snowdown, um, where it's an island on the Moonshe Islands.
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: Um, and we're going right on the coast of the island with um at this citrus shack is the bar, and inside of it they've got the Paradise Pale Ale.
- 7:33SPEAKER_02: Nice, I love it.
- 7:36SPEAKER_00: It's kind of a simple one.
- 7:37SPEAKER_02: Uh, I still unsure on this one, but I decided to place this one in Orgoth in the high moor, um, which is uh it's kind of in the middle of nowhere.
- 7:51SPEAKER_02: But I felt like it kind of fit that location because uh this is served at the discreet gopher alehouse.
- 7:59SPEAKER_00: The disc the what?
- 8:01SPEAKER_02: Yes, the discreet gopher alehouse, and they are serving this rebranded as gopher citra.
- 8:09SPEAKER_00: Oh no.
- 8:10SPEAKER_00: Okay, thank you all for coming.
- 8:14SPEAKER_00: I couldn't help it.
- 8:15SPEAKER_00: I'm sorry.
- 8:17SPEAKER_01: Subscribe for more.
- 8:20SPEAKER_00: Oh, we just lost all of our listeners.
- 8:24SPEAKER_01: Go go go for what again?
- 8:26SPEAKER_01: Go for citray.
- 8:27SPEAKER_01: Go for citra.
- 8:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 8:29SPEAKER_01: Oh boy, that's gonna pop up somewhere again.
- 8:32SPEAKER_00: Oh man, if you can make us a logo for that one, let's not love that.
- 8:38SPEAKER_02: Uh all right.
- 8:39SPEAKER_02: Uh to round this baby out.
- 8:41SPEAKER_02: Uh, first of all, yay or nay.
- 8:43SPEAKER_00: So I'd give this one a big yay.
- 8:45SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 8:46SPEAKER_02: I would agree.
- 8:46SPEAKER_01: I say yay.
- 8:47SPEAKER_01: It's not gonna be the beer I go to first, probably.
- 8:50SPEAKER_01: I gotta work my way up to this one, but I I do like it.
- 8:52SPEAKER_01: I would totally buy it again.
- 8:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I I agree.
- 8:55SPEAKER_02: And then last up is our challenge rating.
- 8:59SPEAKER_02: So I think uh what is this like our third or fourth one of these?
- 9:01SPEAKER_02: So you guys kind of know how this works.
- 9:03SPEAKER_02: So challenge rating isn't necessarily our love it uh scale or not, it's more so um, you know, we kind of started with maybe a cremail like as a challenge rating one, all the way up to a double IPA as a challenge rating 20.
- 9:16SPEAKER_02: But it's kind of like uh the rules are made up and we just assign it a value.
- 9:20SPEAKER_02: So what do we think?
- 9:22SPEAKER_01: It's like whose lines anyway.
- 9:23SPEAKER_01: Basically, everything's made up and the points don't matter.
- 9:27SPEAKER_00: This is kind of a hard one because it's got like the hoppiness that uh if you don't like hops that you're it's there.
- 9:36SPEAKER_00: I would say like an 11.
- 9:38SPEAKER_00: I I I like this one, it's nice and smooth, it's got a little of a bite to it, but not not a punch you in the face by by any means.
- 9:46SPEAKER_00: I agree.
- 9:47SPEAKER_01: I was gonna give it a 12.
- 9:50SPEAKER_02: I feel like my rating was off, but I was thinking with well, I was thinking like around a seven.
- 9:54SPEAKER_02: I don't know why.
- 9:56SPEAKER_02: But if you know what though, if I I like beer.
- 9:59SPEAKER_02: If I didn't like beer and I was gonna drink this, I would probably put it higher.
- 10:04SPEAKER_02: Because if you don't love craft beers, this one is a little hoppier than what you're probably used to.
- 10:12SPEAKER_02: It has a little bit drier of a mouthfeel that you're probably also not used to.
- 10:16SPEAKER_02: So I think the rating that you guys gave makes more sense.
- 10:19SPEAKER_02: So I'll bump it to an 11.
- 10:21SPEAKER_00: If you can handle an occasional IPA, you'll be this one's very doable.
- 10:25SPEAKER_02: Right, sure.
- 10:26SPEAKER_02: And I think that's maybe why I went a little bit lower.
- 10:28SPEAKER_02: Um, but yeah.
- 10:30SPEAKER_02: All right.
- 10:31SPEAKER_02: That's gonna do it for this bonus episode.
- 10:33SPEAKER_02: Stay tuned for more beer reviews in the future.
