- 0:05Speaker 1: NFL Now is a production of the NFL in partnership
- 0:08Speaker 1: with iHeartRadio. We got Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelcey working
- 0:22Speaker 1: out in Texas. It's phase one of the offseason programming.
- 0:26Speaker 1: They're getting in their work away from Kansas City.
- 0:29Speaker 2: Where they're going to have a draft coming up in
- 0:31Speaker 2: eight days. They're getting in.
- 0:32Speaker 1: Work in Cincinnati as well. Twenty six teams. It's Trey
- 0:36Speaker 1: Hendrickson with the Bengals. Have their guys in the building
- 0:39Speaker 1: today as we get ready for a new season. As
- 0:41Speaker 1: we sit here as benjed eight days away from the
- 0:45Speaker 1: twenty twenty three Annual Selection meeting, and with that, we
- 0:48Speaker 1: welcome you to NFL Now on NFL Network, presented to
- 0:51Speaker 1: you by IKEA from our newsroom in Los Angeles.
- 0:54Speaker 2: My name is Andrews Siciliano.
- 0:56Speaker 1: Coming up a little bit later, a guy who might
- 0:59Speaker 1: hear his name called Night number one, one of the
- 1:01Speaker 1: better defensive linemen in this NFL draft, Elijah can Sy
- 1:06Speaker 1: from pitt.
- 1:07Speaker 2: Is going to join us.
- 1:07Speaker 1: We opened the show with news of the third overall
- 1:11Speaker 1: pick in twenty twenty one. That would be Trey Lance,
- 1:14Speaker 1: whose career in San Francisco has not really gotten off
- 1:18Speaker 1: on the foot. Anyone thought it would because he's thrown
- 1:21Speaker 1: only one hundred and two passes, he's been injured. Jimmy
- 1:23Speaker 1: Garoppolo played well, brock Purty played well, and he started
- 1:26Speaker 1: only four games. Ian Rappaport tells US operators are standing
- 1:30Speaker 1: by potentially and that teams have called the forty nine Ers.
- 1:35Speaker 1: Ian is here, Mike Garrifulo is here, gentlemen, Hello about
- 1:38Speaker 1: Trey Lance. Kyle Shanahan he haan back of the annual meetings,
- 1:41Speaker 1: said they would listen to anything about anyone, joking that
- 1:46Speaker 1: if someone wanted to trade for him or John.
- 1:48Speaker 2: Lynch, they would listen. So are they listening on Trey
- 1:51Speaker 2: Lance calls.
- 1:54Speaker 3: Here's my understanding of where it all stands with Trey Lance.
- 1:57Speaker 3: Several teams have inquired over the last several days, last
- 2:00Speaker 3: several weeks with the forty nine Ers about potentially trading
- 2:03Speaker 3: for the former number three overall pick Trey Lance. And
- 2:07Speaker 3: you know this really should not be that much of
- 2:09Speaker 3: a surprise. Teams could read the landscape. It is very
- 2:11Speaker 3: clear that brock perty is expected to be the forty
- 2:14Speaker 3: nine Ers starter of the future. Don't take my word
- 2:17Speaker 3: for it, take the word of basically every forty nine
- 2:20Speaker 3: Ers executive and coach who has spoken. They also signed
- 2:23Speaker 3: Sam Darnold in the offseason, leaving the number three selection.
- 2:27Speaker 3: They traded all of those picks to go up and
- 2:29Speaker 3: get as a potential third quarterback option that just does
- 2:32Speaker 3: not really seem to work. So teams are inquiring, teams
- 2:35Speaker 3: are calling. The forty nine Ers have fielded the calls,
- 2:38Speaker 3: but not made the calls. I would also not expect
- 2:41Speaker 3: the deal to be imminent if for no other reason, Mike,
- 2:44Speaker 3: then the forty nine Ers do not know for one
- 2:46Speaker 3: hundred thousand percent sure that Brock Purdy is going to
- 2:49Speaker 3: be healthy to start the season. If he is not,
- 2:52Speaker 3: perhaps they hang on to Trey Lance. But at least
- 2:55Speaker 3: given a young, talented quarterback like this, there is interest.
- 3:00Speaker 4: Rock Purty himself not a million percent sure that he's
- 3:03Speaker 4: even gonna play this upcoming season. He talked CBS Sports
- 3:05Speaker 4: recently and said has no idea if he'll be able
- 3:08Speaker 4: to play this upcoming season. So the long and short
- 3:11Speaker 4: of this is, for Trey Lance, there's still potentially an
- 3:14Speaker 4: opportunity for him right here, even if he's not the
- 3:17Speaker 4: quarterback of the future, to at least go out and
- 3:20Speaker 4: play on a team with a really good roster, with
- 3:23Speaker 4: a really good offense around him, and show any team
- 3:28Speaker 4: in the preseason, likely when he's going up against Sam
- 3:31Speaker 4: Darnold in a likely competition, that he's got the capabilities
- 3:34Speaker 4: to be an NFL quarterback if he's still on the
- 3:37Speaker 4: forty nine ers roster at that point. So I agree
- 3:41Speaker 4: with you that in that regard Ian and mentioned the
- 3:43Speaker 4: Trey Lance that you know, despite the fact that teams
- 3:46Speaker 4: are calling, and despite the fact that forty nine Ers
- 3:48Speaker 4: have pointed toward brock Purty as the guy for the future,
- 3:51Speaker 4: there is a big time opportunity in front of you.
- 3:54Speaker 4: And I think I'd much rather be playing with the
- 3:56Speaker 4: forty nine ers offensive roster around me than potentially a
- 3:58Speaker 4: team that could acquire you.
- 4:00Speaker 2: Sure it is going to be fascinating.
- 4:01Speaker 1: Let's say brock Purty isn't ready for training camp, which
- 4:03Speaker 1: seems now a likelihood, right, and then you have Trey
- 4:08Speaker 1: Lance and Sam Darnald battling it out in essence for
- 4:10Speaker 1: the starting quarterback job. But assuming Trey Lance is still there,
- 4:13Speaker 1: what if Sam Donald beats out Trey Lance, then what
- 4:16Speaker 1: there's some who say he might beat out Trey Lance.
- 4:19Speaker 1: Then what you have an asset now do you listen?
- 4:22Speaker 1: But then you have rock Pergy's rehab, which still is
- 4:24Speaker 1: very much up in the air.
- 4:25Speaker 2: All right.
- 4:25Speaker 1: Today is significant for a couple of reasons. It's eight
- 4:27Speaker 1: days away, but today is also the last day that
- 4:29Speaker 1: you can go visit and go on an official visit
- 4:32Speaker 1: with a team.
- 4:33Speaker 2: So CJ.
- 4:34Speaker 1: Stroud to the Falcons who are sitting there at eight,
- 4:38Speaker 1: Mike is an interesting one.
- 4:40Speaker 4: Yeah, he is visiting today, c J. Stroud with the
- 4:43Speaker 4: Atlanta Falcons, who are doing their homework on all of
- 4:46Speaker 4: the top quarterbacks. It does not mean that they are
- 4:48Speaker 4: going to take one. They did their homerk on the
- 4:50Speaker 4: quarterbacks last year, did not take Kenny Pickett in the
- 4:53Speaker 4: first round, instead went with Drake London. So it's not
- 4:56Speaker 4: a certainty that they take a quarterback here.
- 4:59Speaker 2: But the notion of c J.
- 5:01Speaker 4: Stroud still being available with the eighth pick preposterous as
- 5:06Speaker 4: far as or as recently as maybe a week ago
- 5:09Speaker 4: or so. Now, the thought that the Texans might pass
- 5:12Speaker 4: on Stroud at two and then where does he fall
- 5:15Speaker 4: beyond that? And do the Falcons get tempted whether it's
- 5:18Speaker 4: an eight or even a short slide up to take him.
- 5:21Speaker 4: We shall see depending on how his visit goes and
- 5:23Speaker 4: their entire evaluation of them. But they are certainly doing
- 5:25Speaker 4: their homework on all these quarterbacks at the top of
- 5:28Speaker 4: the draft, including Stroud today.
- 5:30Speaker 2: It is smart.
- 5:31Speaker 1: This is said to do your due diligence here. And
- 5:34Speaker 1: we've also heard gms and coaches say that we use
- 5:37Speaker 1: these meetings this is years later to get to know
- 5:39Speaker 1: a prospect that we knew we weren't going to take,
- 5:42Speaker 1: but we store that file away for two or three
- 5:45Speaker 1: years later if that guy ever comes available and maybe
- 5:48Speaker 1: we get a second shot at him. All right, Mike,
- 5:50Speaker 1: thank you. Ian, stay right there. I want to talk
- 5:52Speaker 1: about Jalen Carter. He Drew Rosenhaus obviously said he's only
- 5:55Speaker 1: taking visits for teams in the top ten. Remember, Jalen
- 5:58Speaker 1: Carter entered a no contest plea last month to misdemeanor
- 6:03Speaker 1: charges of reckless driving and racing, twelve month's probation, one
- 6:08Speaker 1: thousand dollars fine, eighty hours of community service.
- 6:11Speaker 2: He was asked about.
- 6:12Speaker 1: That yesterday in an interview on HBO's Real Sports.
- 6:17Speaker 5: Have any of these teams that have talked to you,
- 6:20Speaker 5: if any of the coaches. If any of the executives
- 6:22Speaker 5: asked you about what happened on January fifteenth.
- 6:26Speaker 6: Yes, a couple of teams asked me about it, but
- 6:28Speaker 6: they really didn't get too in debt about the X
- 6:30Speaker 6: and as wanted to hit my side, and that was it.
- 6:33Speaker 5: Do you think that what happened back in January is
- 6:36Speaker 5: going to matter to NFL team's come Draft day?
- 6:39Speaker 7: Uh?
- 6:39Speaker 6: Yeah, I feel that it's gonna matter a little bit
- 6:40Speaker 6: because you know, NFL teams look deep into your life.
- 6:43Speaker 6: Though it could have been something I did back in elementary. Now,
- 6:46Speaker 6: I'm pretty sure they know. So you know this coming
- 6:49Speaker 6: out at the time it did come out, I'm preppy.
- 6:52Speaker 6: Sure it's going to affect a little bit.
- 6:55Speaker 1: Sorry, those who don't remember, A George's teammate lost his life,
- 6:58Speaker 1: A George's staffer lost her life. Jalen Carter was in
- 7:01Speaker 1: a different car. Mark rossedeut part of the conversation, but
- 7:04Speaker 1: there's some questions how truthful he was about his initial
- 7:06Speaker 1: involvement that night. All of that said, Mark watching Jalen
- 7:10Speaker 1: Carter last night. From your experience in NFL front offices,
- 7:14Speaker 1: is this a decision that goes up to ownership here
- 7:17Speaker 1: is this one of those ones where hey, I want
- 7:20Speaker 1: the owner to sign off before I hand in that card.
- 7:24Speaker 2: Without a doubt.
- 7:25Speaker 8: Andrew, if you're taking this guy in the top ten
- 7:27Speaker 8: and he's projected to be everyone, all the key decision
- 7:30Speaker 8: makers in your organization need to feel comfortable with this player.
- 7:33Speaker 8: Anytime we had someone with some question marks, we always
- 7:37Speaker 8: made sure that, Okay, your area scouts throughout the year
- 7:40Speaker 8: have gotten all the background information. Talk to everybody at
- 7:42Speaker 8: the school about this young man. And then you go
- 7:45Speaker 8: through the whole postseason process of All Star Games or
- 7:49Speaker 8: combine where you have your other scouts, your coaching staff
- 7:52Speaker 8: interview and talk to the young man and then also
- 7:55Speaker 8: bring him into your facility once again to make sure
- 7:58Speaker 8: that yes, you have to meet the owner, you have
- 8:01Speaker 8: to meet the GM, you have to meet the head
- 8:02Speaker 8: coach and everyone. It really sits down and talks about
- 8:05Speaker 8: when you have your draft meetings, all right, we know
- 8:07Speaker 8: all the issues. Do we feel comfortable with it? And
- 8:10Speaker 8: there's time. Do you want to feel comfortable? You want
- 8:12Speaker 8: that young man to present himself and say, you know what,
- 8:15Speaker 8: I made mistakes, but I learned from them and I'm
- 8:18Speaker 8: going to be a great teammate for whatever team he
- 8:20Speaker 8: gets drafted by. So yes, he said it. He's cognizant
- 8:24Speaker 8: of it and been coached well. Definitely is going to
- 8:26Speaker 8: matter every team digs d No, that's exactly right.
- 8:31Speaker 3: And I would say this, the one thing we know
- 8:32Speaker 3: for sure is that Jalen Carter, just football talent wise,
- 8:36Speaker 3: could potentially be at the top of the draft. Obviously
- 8:38Speaker 3: a quarterback is going one, but just talent wise, he
- 8:41Speaker 3: is expected to be at the top of boards. But
- 8:43Speaker 3: these decisions, with Mark Ross was so expertly detailing, are
- 8:46Speaker 3: being made this week and early next week, and they're
- 8:49Speaker 3: not being made by coaches and general managers. They are
- 8:51Speaker 3: being made in consultation with owners. And there are several
- 8:55Speaker 3: teams in the top ten who love Jalen Carter talent
- 8:58Speaker 3: wise and do not know the answer right now whether
- 9:01Speaker 3: or not they would take them. They don't know organizationally
- 9:04Speaker 3: is this so when they want in their building, they
- 9:06Speaker 3: will put all the information together, including the information they
- 9:10Speaker 3: got from their visits. And of course he is visiting
- 9:12Speaker 3: the Atlanta Falcons today, one team that will consider him
- 9:16Speaker 3: to put all that together and come with an organizational
- 9:19Speaker 3: decision on his future.
- 9:21Speaker 1: And it's a friendly reminder to the people at home
- 9:23Speaker 1: as well. And Mark, you certainly know this that these
- 9:26Speaker 1: decisions in many ways, our HR decisions, like we know
- 9:29Speaker 1: this guy can play football, we know the tape is
- 9:31Speaker 1: really good. I'm talking not just Jalen Carter anyone. It's
- 9:35Speaker 1: do I want this person in our building every day?
- 9:36Speaker 2: Dude?
- 9:37Speaker 1: Do we think he plays well with others? Do we
- 9:38Speaker 1: think he's a good employee and a good person. It
- 9:41Speaker 1: does go that deep. It's not just can't he play
- 9:43Speaker 1: football that well? And for a lot of teams, for
- 9:46Speaker 1: all the teams here as you set your board, these
- 9:48Speaker 1: are conversations that you had. You're having about so many players.
- 9:51Speaker 1: All right, thank you, Ian. Let's get to Hendon Hooker here.
- 9:54Speaker 1: He's visiting the Giants. This is interesting. The Giants, who
- 9:59Speaker 1: just re signed Daniel Jones after he played so well
- 10:05Speaker 1: the playoffs last year, are picking twenty fifth overall and
- 10:08Speaker 1: fifty seven if you want to look ahead to the
- 10:11Speaker 1: second round. Why would they talk to Hendon Hooker. He's
- 10:16Speaker 1: the third quarterback on Bucky Brooks big board now his
- 10:21Speaker 1: top five quarterbacks version three point zero. The hey is
- 10:25Speaker 1: in the barn here for Bucky and his quarterback rankings.
- 10:28Speaker 1: Judy Batista joins the conversation. Mark, you've been to the Giants,
- 10:31Speaker 1: you kind of sort of know what the organization thinks.
- 10:34Speaker 1: They just resigned Daniel Jones, but we've seen something similar
- 10:38Speaker 1: down the road to the Eagles, and look how it
- 10:40Speaker 1: worked out with Jalen Hurts.
- 10:42Speaker 2: Would this be real here?
- 10:45Speaker 8: I'm not saying how this is real. Remember, Jalen Hurts
- 10:48Speaker 8: was a second round draft paper where Hendon Hooker is
- 10:50Speaker 8: scheduled to go there with the first round.
- 10:51Speaker 1: He's not going on He's not going to be there
- 10:53Speaker 1: at fifty seven.
- 10:54Speaker 2: Yeah, that's what I'm saying.
- 10:55Speaker 8: They can't invest the first round picking Hendon Hooker after
- 10:57Speaker 8: what they've done with Daniel Jones, and there's absolutely no
- 11:00Speaker 8: way he's making it to fifty seven. When you bring
- 11:02Speaker 8: players in you have is it's the various reasons. You
- 11:05Speaker 8: want to check out the character issues we talked about
- 11:07Speaker 8: with Jalen Carter, medical issues which Hendon Hooker.
- 11:09Speaker 2: Does have, but also throw a little smoke.
- 11:12Speaker 8: Screen in the mix there to create a little buzz
- 11:14Speaker 8: and what are the Giants doing there Hendon Hooker. So
- 11:17Speaker 8: just as we're talking about this, there may be a
- 11:19Speaker 8: little talk in other draft rooms about, man, what are
- 11:22Speaker 8: the Giants doing trying to drum up some interest for
- 11:24Speaker 8: Hendon Hooker or as mentioned before, with other players for
- 11:27Speaker 8: the future. You get to get to know him and
- 11:29Speaker 8: see if he becomes a free agent later on, then
- 11:31Speaker 8: you've done all this homework on Hendon Hooker. But right now, realistically,
- 11:35Speaker 8: for the Giants, I could not see any possible way
- 11:38Speaker 8: that they either take him there he's not making it
- 11:39Speaker 8: too fifty seven, and they're not going to trade up,
- 11:41Speaker 8: let's say, in the bottom in the first round to
- 11:43Speaker 8: go get Hendon Hooker.
- 11:44Speaker 9: Judy, Yeah, this strikes me as doing your due diligence
- 11:49Speaker 9: on the very very remote chance that he drops all
- 11:52Speaker 9: the way into your lap, and then they would have
- 11:54Speaker 9: a decision to make. They're not taking him in the
- 11:57Speaker 9: first round after they just did the Daniel Jones contract.
- 12:00Speaker 9: But remember the Daniel Jones contract is structured so that
- 12:03Speaker 9: theoretically they could get out of it after the twenty
- 12:06Speaker 9: twenty four season. I don't think that's their intention, and
- 12:09Speaker 9: they certainly don't want to have to do that. But
- 12:11Speaker 9: you know, Hooker is almost certainly not going to play
- 12:14Speaker 9: this season, and so this is sort of you're doing
- 12:17Speaker 9: your due diligence for long term, like what will he
- 12:20Speaker 9: be in the future? And I agree there maybe a
- 12:22Speaker 9: little bit of gamesmanship going on here, but I would
- 12:26Speaker 9: not make much of this unless we see Hooker really
- 12:29Speaker 9: drop down the board on the first day and then
- 12:33Speaker 9: go into the second day. He certainly will not be
- 12:36Speaker 9: the Giants first round draft pick.
- 12:37Speaker 8: But it's an awful lot.
- 12:38Speaker 9: Of fun to talk about this right now.
- 12:40Speaker 1: All right, real quick, Mark, I only had twenty five
- 12:42Speaker 1: seconds here. You only get thirty of these visits. Have
- 12:44Speaker 1: you in the past had someone in merely for show
- 12:48Speaker 1: to throw other teams.
- 12:49Speaker 2: Off without a doubt?
- 12:51Speaker 8: Andrew, Yeah, you try to, especially if you're really interested
- 12:53Speaker 8: in the guy. You want to pay attention to who
- 12:55Speaker 8: you don't bring in as opposed to who you do
- 12:57Speaker 8: bring in sometimes, and that's the deal I think with. Yes,
- 13:00Speaker 8: you bring a guy in a little throw the most
- 13:02Speaker 8: green off, throw it off the scent of another guy
- 13:04Speaker 8: that you're a targeting. Here's the thing, A wild scenario
- 13:07Speaker 8: with Hennon Hooker, with the injury situation. If the Giants
- 13:10Speaker 8: are bringing him, maybe there's something tracked, you know, really
- 13:13Speaker 8: bad with the knee that they know about another team point,
- 13:15Speaker 8: that's the only possible reason that he could go all
- 13:17Speaker 8: the way to fifty seven. There's something really bad there,
- 13:20Speaker 8: and they wanted to have their doctors check him out
- 13:22Speaker 8: even more to say, okay, he is going to fall
- 13:24Speaker 8: away to fifty seven and then we can get him there.
- 13:27Speaker 1: Like dating, he's sowing across the room. No, I'm not
- 13:29Speaker 1: going to show that I'm interested. I'm going to pretend
- 13:31Speaker 1: that I'm not interested playing Corey Andrew.
- 13:33Speaker 8: That's the time games intrue.
- 13:35Speaker 1: Yeah, they don't work, by the way, but how many
- 13:37Speaker 1: times do you hear a player get drafted and say
- 13:40Speaker 1: I never met with them, I had no idea. Then
- 13:48Speaker 1: green pressure of the medal, and they sucked in trouble
- 13:52Speaker 1: and it was Elijah Cancy.
- 13:54Speaker 2: They got there first to take you off ballance. Elijah
- 13:57Speaker 2: Cantcy bet him.
- 13:58Speaker 10: At the point of the.
- 13:59Speaker 2: Time, there's soon sided. That is Commangia Canci.
- 14:02Speaker 11: I don't pleeve to like prove anyone else wrong. I
- 14:05Speaker 11: just proved myself right.
- 14:09Speaker 1: He is the acc defensive player of the Year. He's
- 14:11Speaker 1: a guy who may very well hear his name called eight.
- 14:14Speaker 2: Days from now.
- 14:15Speaker 1: Round number one of the NFL Draft, pit defensive tackle
- 14:18Speaker 1: Elijah Canty joins us on NFL Now Elijah Hous's whole
- 14:21Speaker 1: pre draft process treating you.
- 14:24Speaker 11: Man, this process has been great to me. Man, I'm
- 14:26Speaker 11: having a great time.
- 14:28Speaker 1: So every day on the show here, because we're on
- 14:31Speaker 1: every afternoon giving everyone the news here count down the
- 14:33Speaker 1: days to the draft. We lead the show with which
- 14:36Speaker 1: players are visiting which teams, like Handed Hookers with the
- 14:39Speaker 1: Giants today.
- 14:40Speaker 2: CJ. Stroud is with the Falcons today.
- 14:43Speaker 1: Elijah, you and I were just talking off the air,
- 14:45Speaker 1: how many visits have.
- 14:47Speaker 2: You gone on?
- 14:49Speaker 10: I've had zero visits.
- 14:51Speaker 1: Zero visits for the guy that's number twenty seven on
- 14:54Speaker 1: Daniel Jeremiah's big board and a guy that a lot
- 14:57Speaker 1: of people think will be taking night number one.
- 15:00Speaker 2: Why haven't you gone on any visits?
- 15:04Speaker 11: Honestly, that's a great question, man, I've been asking around.
- 15:08Speaker 11: I think it's I want to say it's it's a
- 15:10Speaker 11: it's a good thing and not go on too many visits.
- 15:13Speaker 11: Hopefully the teams have the answers that they need, the
- 15:18Speaker 11: answers that they need, the questions that they have they
- 15:20Speaker 11: have answers to already, So I'm hoping that that's the
- 15:23Speaker 11: reason why, Well, it's definitely is definitely nerve working, not
- 15:27Speaker 11: not going on any business at all.
- 15:29Speaker 2: Collijah, I'll tell you, I think it's a good sign.
- 15:32Speaker 1: Honestly because Mark Ross and I am one of our
- 15:34Speaker 1: former front office guys, former GM. We're just talking on
- 15:37Speaker 1: air about you don't want teams to know sometimes who
- 15:41Speaker 1: it is you really really like, Like he says, don't
- 15:43Speaker 1: look at who's visiting which team, look at which teams
- 15:47Speaker 1: aren't bringing certain players in. So maybe Collijah, the entire
- 15:51Speaker 1: NFL doesn't want everyone else to know that they really
- 15:55Speaker 1: do like you.
- 15:58Speaker 10: Man.
- 15:58Speaker 11: I hope that's I hope that's the reason why I
- 16:01Speaker 11: know this. In this process, it is kind of like
- 16:04Speaker 11: it's always the team that you least suspect. So I'm
- 16:08Speaker 11: pretty sure guys are not trying to play the hand
- 16:10Speaker 11: and not and not give give give a heads up
- 16:13Speaker 11: to everyone else because I'm pretty sure when you take
- 16:15Speaker 11: visit it alerts everyone else.
- 16:17Speaker 1: So exactly, we were joking, it's kind of like you said,
- 16:21Speaker 1: you see someone you like at the other other end
- 16:23Speaker 1: of the bar, It's like, you know, I don't I
- 16:25Speaker 1: don't want them to know that I really liked them.
- 16:27Speaker 1: Like we're gonna we're gonna slow play this and you
- 16:29Speaker 1: know figured out a little bit later. Look, I don't
- 16:31Speaker 1: know what there isn't to like, Elijah. Can we put
- 16:33Speaker 1: up your forty time?
- 16:34Speaker 2: Here?
- 16:35Speaker 1: You at the combine and you were just blazing through
- 16:37Speaker 1: the combine. You're over two hundred and eighty pounds, and
- 16:40Speaker 1: this is the second fastest time ever for a guy
- 16:43Speaker 1: over two hundred and eighty pounds. At the combine, you
- 16:47Speaker 1: ran a four to six seven Colijah at two eighty one?
- 16:51Speaker 1: Can you play wide receiver or tight end at the
- 16:54Speaker 1: next level.
- 16:56Speaker 11: I can play tight end, I can play running back,
- 16:58Speaker 11: I can play full back, I can play I play everything.
- 17:01Speaker 1: I mean, dude, guys your size aren't supposed to move
- 17:04Speaker 1: that fast, and people like to make comparisons. I honestly
- 17:07Speaker 1: think sometimes this is unfair. I know Aaron Donald has
- 17:10Speaker 1: been a little bit of a mentor for you. You
- 17:12Speaker 1: guys are both similar size. You both went to Pitt.
- 17:15Speaker 1: But it's like, oh, well, Colijah.
- 17:17Speaker 2: Went to Pitt. He knows Aaron Donald. He must be
- 17:19Speaker 2: Aaron Donald.
- 17:20Speaker 1: Is there anything from that where you want to go, like, dude,
- 17:23Speaker 1: pump the brakes.
- 17:25Speaker 10: Yeah, that's something that I hear a lot.
- 17:27Speaker 11: I mean, it's an honor to be recognized and looked
- 17:30Speaker 11: at as a prototype of Aaron Donald. But honestly, I'm
- 17:33Speaker 11: Elijah Cansey and he's Aaron Donald.
- 17:36Speaker 10: I'll never be him, man, And I'm just myself man.
- 17:39Speaker 11: And I want to thank him for everything he's told
- 17:42Speaker 11: me up until this point and him just been a
- 17:45Speaker 11: a I want to say, a hero and play plan
- 17:48Speaker 11: a big role until my until my my game. I
- 17:52Speaker 11: want to thank him a lot. He kind of paved
- 17:54Speaker 11: the way for guy this, that and I and I.
- 17:57Speaker 10: Really, I really believe that guys are ye.
- 18:02Speaker 11: He's a He's a true true test the money of
- 18:06Speaker 11: it God.
- 18:06Speaker 10: Our thives will play at the next level and dominate.
- 18:09Speaker 1: Uh yeah, you will. I know you retweeted something there
- 18:12Speaker 1: from Dwight Freedi. You said, it's not about how tall
- 18:14Speaker 1: you are. This isn't basketball. I'm not trying to, you know,
- 18:17Speaker 1: grab rebounds or block shots or anything like that. I
- 18:20Speaker 1: have natural, low level leverage. I can take advantage of
- 18:24Speaker 1: the blocker. Dwight Freedi was known for his spin move.
- 18:27Speaker 1: He played on the outside. You play more on the inside.
- 18:30Speaker 1: You use your height to your advantage. Don't hold your
- 18:32Speaker 1: height against you because you have that speed. We have
- 18:34Speaker 1: a message.
- 18:35Speaker 2: By the way.
- 18:35Speaker 1: I don't know if you've seen this, but but someone
- 18:38Speaker 1: grabbed a cell phone and did this in this car.
- 18:39Speaker 2: Take a look.
- 18:41Speaker 12: Hopefully you can fall and be with me with the
- 18:43Speaker 12: Rams man, he makes them happen. But anywhere anywhere you go, man,
- 18:47Speaker 12: I know you're gonna do your thing and hold it
- 18:48Speaker 12: down and continue to take over.
- 18:50Speaker 3: Man.
- 18:50Speaker 12: And you know held a pit. You know you're making
- 18:53Speaker 12: us pick gas proud man, and to see everything you
- 18:56Speaker 12: accomplished and everything you're going to accomplish. Man, it's it's
- 18:59Speaker 12: all a blessing. So take it all in, but don't
- 19:02Speaker 12: slow down. It just the beginning. You got a lot
- 19:05Speaker 12: more meat on the bone, man, so go get it.
- 19:08Speaker 1: That is Aaron Donald sitting in his car. The Rams
- 19:11Speaker 1: pick thirty six, Elijah. I don't know that you're gonna
- 19:15Speaker 1: be there thirty six. I doubt it actually, But the
- 19:18Speaker 1: chance of you and Aaron Donald, how about that.
- 19:22Speaker 10: That be that'll be awesome. Oh love to play. That's
- 19:25Speaker 10: to Aaron Donald.
- 19:27Speaker 1: Is it worth falling to thirty six to play next
- 19:29Speaker 1: to Aaron Donald?
- 19:31Speaker 10: It'll be worth it.
- 19:34Speaker 1: Hey, man, I think you're going before that. But regardless
- 19:36Speaker 1: it would be cool to have you both here in
- 19:37Speaker 1: Los Angeles. Elijah, good luck to you. Eight days left. Man,
- 19:40Speaker 1: can't wait to see where you end up.
- 19:43Speaker 10: Thank you man, Thanks for having me on the show.
- 19:45Speaker 1: Of course, Elijah can't see everybody from pitted. Eight days
- 19:48Speaker 1: away from night number one in Kansas City. We continue
- 19:51Speaker 1: here on NFL Now on NFL Network by getting to
- 19:55Speaker 1: a former first round pick out of Miami. This is
- 19:58Speaker 1: to a tongue I loa. We know his battle staying
- 20:01Speaker 1: healthy last year. We know that he is doing everything
- 20:05Speaker 1: he can in this off season to stay healthy, to
- 20:10Speaker 1: to find ways to manage football better. He admitted moments
- 20:13Speaker 1: ago that he contemplated retirement in.
- 20:16Speaker 2: The off season.
- 20:19Speaker 7: I considered it, you know, for for a time, having
- 20:25Speaker 7: sat down with my family, having sat down with my
- 20:29Speaker 7: wife and having those kind of kind of conversations.
- 20:32Speaker 2: But uh, really.
- 20:35Speaker 7: It it would be hard for me to to to
- 20:38Speaker 7: walk away from from this game with with how old
- 20:42Speaker 7: I am with I mean, with my my son. I
- 20:46Speaker 7: always dreamed of growing you know, playing as long as
- 20:50Speaker 7: I could to where my son knew exactly what you know,
- 20:53Speaker 7: he was watching his dad dud And yeah, I mean.
- 21:00Speaker 2: It's it's my health.
- 21:01Speaker 7: It's my body, you know, and I feel like this
- 21:05Speaker 7: is what's best for me and my family. So I mean,
- 21:09Speaker 7: I love the game of football. If I didn't, I
- 21:12Speaker 7: would have quit a long time.
- 21:14Speaker 1: Interesting there to a tongue of I love opening up
- 21:16Speaker 1: and saying, Cam Wolfe, Judy Batista, Cam, you're in the
- 21:19Speaker 1: building there in Miami, saying that he did, Yeah, talk
- 21:23Speaker 1: about it with his family about hanging it up, but
- 21:26Speaker 1: he they Cam decided to come back and play what
- 21:30Speaker 1: will be a fourth NFL season.
- 21:32Speaker 13: Yeah, there's a lot of very real conversations that happened
- 21:35Speaker 13: in his household, and the reality is that TWA decided
- 21:38Speaker 13: this is what's best for his health, his family to
- 21:41Speaker 13: keep playing. You heard him mention his son in that situation,
- 21:44Speaker 13: wanting to play so that his son remembered him playing.
- 21:46Speaker 13: You know, there's a lot of conversation on social media
- 21:49Speaker 13: that always comes out about Tua in the hits and
- 21:51Speaker 13: why doesn't he retire?
- 21:53Speaker 2: Why is that?
- 21:53Speaker 13: I thought it was interesting that he said he talked
- 21:55Speaker 13: to doctors and specialists that assured him that he would
- 21:59Speaker 13: not have any more risk for concussions or CTE starting
- 22:04Speaker 13: in twenty twenty three or beyond because he had the
- 22:07Speaker 13: multiple concussions last year. The Dolphins have been adamant that
- 22:10Speaker 13: he is their quarterback of the future. But it also
- 22:12Speaker 13: was noteworthy that Dolphins GM Chris Greer said today about
- 22:15Speaker 13: the Jalen Hurts contract, Look, it does not move the
- 22:18Speaker 13: needle for us.
- 22:19Speaker 2: Until we have to do something.
- 22:20Speaker 13: They picked up two US fifth year option, but he
- 22:22Speaker 13: admitted that there's going to be other quarterbacks who get
- 22:25Speaker 13: an extension before Tua. They want to see to approve
- 22:28Speaker 13: that he can be healthy. Tua has to prove that
- 22:30Speaker 13: he can be healthy. But obviously there's a lot of
- 22:32Speaker 13: conversations it's going to be had about the fact that
- 22:35Speaker 13: Tua made this decision for himself not to retire and
- 22:38Speaker 13: continue to play.
- 22:41Speaker 2: Well.
- 22:41Speaker 9: I think this topic about whether Tua would retire is
- 22:44Speaker 9: not a concern for right now. Right he has decided
- 22:46Speaker 9: to come back. The question is what happens if he
- 22:49Speaker 9: suffers another concussion at some point. You know that seed
- 22:53Speaker 9: has been planted, and obviously that conversation was already had,
- 22:56Speaker 9: and then you have to wonder if that ups the
- 22:59Speaker 9: chances that he retires. It's going to be a topic
- 23:04Speaker 9: for him on Fortunately, and we know that his durability.
- 23:08Speaker 9: His health is going to be a topic, probably for
- 23:10Speaker 9: the rest of his career. It's also an incredibly important
- 23:14Speaker 9: topic for the Miami Dolphins because everything they are doing,
- 23:17Speaker 9: everything they have done this offseason hinges on Tua being
- 23:21Speaker 9: on the field. We saw them last year. They are
- 23:23Speaker 9: a playoff team when Tua is healthy. He was playing
- 23:27Speaker 9: like an MVP candidate before he got hurt. He is
- 23:30Speaker 9: that good a player. But it all hinges on his
- 23:33Speaker 9: ability to stay on the field. And now that he
- 23:35Speaker 9: said that retirement was actually in the conversation with his family.
- 23:39Speaker 9: I know he decided to come back now, but certainly
- 23:41Speaker 9: that is now going to hover over everything going forward.
- 23:45Speaker 1: And we appreciate the honesty and the vulnerability there. And
- 23:47Speaker 1: sure that is a conversation you should have with your family.
- 23:51Speaker 1: This isn't like the Aaron Rodgers thing. I came out
- 23:52Speaker 1: of the darkness and I was ninety percent retired. That's
- 23:55Speaker 1: a lot different. This is a real conversation that I'm
- 24:00Speaker 1: happy he opened up about. Now that said, Chris Greer
- 24:03Speaker 1: didn't open up much. I am Earlier this morning, he
- 24:06Speaker 1: opened up his pre draft presser by saying he used
- 24:09Speaker 1: the word funnest I know, which is not really a word,
- 24:11Speaker 1: but I'm going to quote him.
- 24:12Speaker 2: He said, this is.
- 24:12Speaker 1: Going to be the funnest press conference of the season
- 24:16Speaker 1: where nobody says anything.
- 24:20Speaker 13: Yeah, and to his word, he did not say much
- 24:23Speaker 13: of anything. The Dolphins are not going to be a
- 24:26Speaker 13: particularly big name team in this draft because they do
- 24:29Speaker 13: not have a first round pick. In fact, they only
- 24:31Speaker 13: have four picks overall. They got that first round pick
- 24:35Speaker 13: doc and the investigation of tampering involving Tom Brady and
- 24:39Speaker 13: Stephen Ross earlier this offseason. But when you look at
- 24:42Speaker 13: the Dolphins situation, there's a few things that came out
- 24:44Speaker 13: of that press conference that were interesting. First, Chris Grier
- 24:47Speaker 13: mentioned that they've been called from a few teams at
- 24:50Speaker 13: the bottom of the first round to see if they
- 24:52Speaker 13: be willing to trade up, and Chris Greer is always
- 24:55Speaker 13: a guy who's known the trade. He said, no serious conversations,
- 24:58Speaker 13: but if a guy fell to them in that spot
- 25:01Speaker 13: at the right time, they would consider it. The second
- 25:03Speaker 13: part of it is tight end is a big for
- 25:05Speaker 13: this team. Their assistant general manager Marvin Allen said, this
- 25:08Speaker 13: is the deepest tight end class in some time, and
- 25:10Speaker 13: so they could be a team We look at on
- 25:12Speaker 13: Day two the second or third round to potentially draft
- 25:15Speaker 13: a tight end. And also Jalen Ramsey, who they traded
- 25:18Speaker 13: for this year, will be essentially a draft pick for
- 25:21Speaker 13: them and exaving. Howard talked today about how he feels
- 25:24Speaker 13: like for the first time since he's been a Dolphin,
- 25:26Speaker 13: he feels like it can go far in the secondary
- 25:29Speaker 13: with himself, with Jalen Ramsey, with vig Vangio is a
- 25:32Speaker 13: big reason why.
- 25:36Speaker 1: Chris Career being honest, which I appreciate, and that is
- 25:40Speaker 1: I'm not going to tell anything on the podium here,
- 25:42Speaker 1: at least not much.
- 25:43Speaker 2: You know, it's not going to happen.
- 25:46Speaker 1: And if I do tell you something, it might be
- 25:47Speaker 1: to throw you off, like teams wanted to trade with me,
- 25:50Speaker 1: or say there's a four sale signing. They come get
- 25:52Speaker 1: it either way. Thank you Camp, thank you Judy.
- 26:01Speaker 2: I think the reaction has been universal here for Janalen Hurts.
- 26:03Speaker 1: Happy for the guy that was a fifty third pick,
- 26:07Speaker 1: second route, a guy that played great college football two
- 26:10Speaker 1: different schools and then took a team to a Super
- 26:12Speaker 1: Bowl just a couple of years later. Five years and
- 26:14Speaker 1: two hundred and fifty five million dollars We've yet to
- 26:17Speaker 1: get Philly guys perspective though. From Mark Lass, former NFL
- 26:21Speaker 1: front office guy, Mark, what's your perspective in this one.
- 26:25Speaker 8: Man who deserved that Andrew and it's a great deal
- 26:27Speaker 8: for the Eagles and for Jalen Hurts. I think a
- 26:29Speaker 8: lot gets lost in Jalen hurts ascension last year in improvement.
- 26:33Speaker 8: What he should be applauded for is that this guy
- 26:35Speaker 8: is a unique figure in really college football in the NFL,
- 26:38Speaker 8: where you start at Alabama SEC freshman of the Year,
- 26:42Speaker 8: you get bench, you go win the National Championship, then
- 26:44Speaker 8: you're all SEC again, then you transferred to another powerhouse
- 26:48Speaker 8: in Oklahoma. All you do there is just completely produced.
- 26:51Speaker 8: Second in the Heisman, all big twelves that all kinds
- 26:53Speaker 8: of Oklahoma rectors, rare leadership, rare work, ethic, rare just
- 26:59Speaker 8: aura that you have about you to do those certain
- 27:01Speaker 8: things and that's what you really set Jalen Hurts a
- 27:04Speaker 8: part of that. This is a unique individual. Everyone talked
- 27:06Speaker 8: about let's do what the Eagles did, but this is
- 27:09Speaker 8: a super unique individual who made it work and got
- 27:12Speaker 8: better and made himselves better. So this is not really
- 27:15Speaker 8: a blueprint. This is sort of a one of a
- 27:16Speaker 8: concentuation have because he's a one kind of individual.
- 27:19Speaker 1: When your hardest working guy and your highest character guy
- 27:22Speaker 1: is also one of your best players, that is a
- 27:24Speaker 1: blueprint to build a winning team.
- 27:26Speaker 2: A guy that literally shows up.
- 27:28Speaker 1: Not that it has everything to do with what kind
- 27:29Speaker 1: of bag you have over your shoulder with a briefcase
- 27:32Speaker 1: every day, a real old man's briefcase to work in Philadelphia.
- 27:36Speaker 2: There's a reason that guy got paid. Deserves it.
