- Cooper Flagg dropped forty-one in his NCAA tournament debut last month, and now every GM in the league is sweating bullets about where they're picking on Thursday. The draft is THIS WEEK, people. Welcome to The Sports Hangover Daily, I'm Michael Benatar. Let's talk about Victor Wembanyama, because this kid just did something Tim Duncan never did. Wemby went for thirty-five points in his playoff debut — thirteen of twenty-one from the field, five of six from three — leading the Spurs past Portland one eleven to ninety-eight. That breaks Duncan's franchise record of thirty-two for most points in a playoff debut. Let me say that again. He outscored Tim Duncan's first playoff game. At twenty-two years old. And honestly? He made it look casual. This wasn't some hero-ball, force-the-issue thirty-five. He was efficient, he was controlled, he was picking apart Portland's defense like he'd been doing this for a decade. Stephon Castle added seventeen with seven assists and seven boards, Devin Vassell chipped in fifteen — this Spurs team has real pieces around Wemby now. Portland shot under forty-three percent from the field and twenty-six percent from three. Deni Avdija competed, but the Blazers looked overwhelmed. San Antonio hasn't won a home playoff game since 2019. They haven't even BEEN in the playoffs since 2019. That drought is over, and the way Wemby looked last night? This series might not last long. Alright, around the league — the NBA Playoffs had FOUR Game Ones on Sunday and three of the four were total blowouts. Boston demolished Philly one twenty-three to ninety-one. Jaylen Brown led the way with twenty-six, Jayson Tatum had twenty-five, eleven boards, and seven assists in his first playoff start since the Achilles injury. The Celtics held Philly to seventeen percent from three. Four of twenty-three. Without Embiid recovering from appendicitis surgery, the Sixers look cooked. Tyrese Maxey had twenty-one and eight assists but he was basically alone out there. That's a thirty-two point loss in Game One at home for your season. Rough. OKC handled Phoenix just as easily — one nineteen to eighty-four. Shai went for twenty-five with a postseason career high in free throws. The Thunder forced nineteen turnovers and outscored the Suns thirty-four to two on points off turnovers. Thirty-four to TWO. Booker had twenty-three but it didn't matter. Phoenix looked like they were just happy to be there. Now here's the fun one — Orlando went into Detroit and stole Game One, one twelve to one oh one. The eight-seed over the one-seed. Paolo Banchero had twenty-three and nine boards, Franz Wagner scored eleven of his nineteen in the fourth quarter when it mattered most. And get this — Detroit has now lost ELEVEN straight home playoff games. That's an NBA record. I don't care how good your regular season was — if you can't win at home in the playoffs, you've got a serious problem. Quick Saturday recap for anyone who missed it — the Cavs handled Toronto, the Nuggets pulled away from Minnesota behind thirty from Jamal Murray, Jalen Brunson dropped nineteen in the FIRST QUARTER against Atlanta as the Knicks won one thirteen to one oh two, and the Lakers beat Houston one oh seven to ninety-eight. LeBron had nineteen, thirteen assists, and eight rebounds. Luke Kennard went nuts with twenty-seven on nine of thirteen shooting. And LeBron and Bronny officially became the first father-son duo to play in a playoff game. That's pretty cool regardless of how you feel about the Bronny situation. On the NFL side — draft week is HERE. The big news is the Giants trading Dexter Lawrence to the Bengals for a top-ten pick. Cincinnati gave up a premium pick for a three-time Pro Bowler, and New York now holds two picks in the top ten — five and ten. Giants GM Joe Schoen flew out to Arizona for Jordyn Tyson's pro day workout, even had dinner with him. Connect the dots there. The Raiders are expected to take a quarterback at number one — likely Fernando Mendoza. And Will Anderson Jr. locked in a three-year, one hundred fifty million dollar extension with the Texans. One thirty-four million guaranteed with a no-trade clause. That makes him the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history. At twenty-three. Earned every penny of it. Here's my Hangover Take. Detroit's home playoff losing streak is the story nobody's talking about enough. Eleven straight. You build the best regular-season record in the East, you get home court, and then you come out flat in Game One against the eight-seed? I think the Pistons are this year's trap team. Great vibes, fun roster, good regular season — but when the pressure ramps up, they fold. Orlando's got guys who've been in playoff fights before. Banchero and Wagner aren't scared of the moment. I'm calling it right now — Magic in six. Detroit's young core isn't ready, and that home-court curse is living rent-free in their heads. Sometimes the record doesn't tell you who a team really is. The playoffs do. That's your hangover. Go hydrate. I'll see you tomorrow.
