- 0:22cats. Daily starts yours.
- 0:25Welcome to Kick Ass Daily, where we bring news, trivia, fun
- 0:29facts, and more just for curious kids like you.
- 0:32Today we're going to explore 2 exciting sports that share a
- 0:35name but are actually quite different, Ice hockey and field
- 0:39hockey. You might have heard of both,
- 0:41but do you know what makes them unique?
- 0:43Get ready, because we're about to break it all down in a way
- 0:46that's easy to understand and a lot of fun.
- 0:49Let's start with the basics. Both ice hockey and field hockey
- 0:53are team sports. In both games, players use
- 0:56sticks to hit a puck or a ball and try to score goals.
- 1:00But there are huge differences in where they're played, what
- 1:03equipment is used, and how the games are played.
- 1:06First up, let's talk about where each game takes place.
- 1:09Ice hockey is played on an ice rink.
- 1:12That means the whole game happens on a big smooth surface
- 1:15made of ice, kind of like the surface you might see at an ice
- 1:18skating rink. Because it's played on ice, all
- 1:21the players wear ice skates to glide around quickly.
- 1:24In many countries where it gets cold in the winter, you might
- 1:27even see people playing ice hockey on frozen ponds.
- 1:30Field hockey, on the other hand, is played on grass or artificial
- 1:34turf. Artificial turf is a special
- 1:37kind of surface that looks like grass but is made from man made
- 1:40materials. You might have seen it on some
- 1:43school playgrounds or soccer fields.
- 1:45Instead of skates, field hockey players wear regular sports
- 1:49shoes, just like you would wear for soccer or running.
- 1:52Now let's talk about the equipment.
- 1:55In ice hockey, the main piece of equipment is the hockey stick.
- 1:59The stick is made of wood, carbon fiber or other strong
- 2:02materials, and it has a flat blade at the end that helps
- 2:05players control the puck. The puck is a small hard disk
- 2:09made of rubber. It's about the size of a
- 2:11hamburger bun, but much thinner and heavier.
- 2:14Players use their sticks to hit pass and shoot the puck toward
- 2:18the other team's goal. Since ice hockey is a very fast
- 2:22and physical game, the players were a lot of protective gear.
- 2:25That includes helmets with face masks, thick gloves, shoulder
- 2:29pads, shin guards, and padded pants.
- 2:32The goalie, or the person who guards the net wears even more
- 2:35padding because they need to block shots that can travel
- 2:38faster than a car on a city street.
- 2:40In fact, professional hockey pucks can travel over 160
- 2:44kilometers per hour, which is about 100 mph.
- 2:48Field hockey has some similarities when it comes to
- 2:51equipment, but also some big differences.
- 2:54Field hockey players also use a stick, but it's shaped a bit
- 2:57differently. A field hockey stick is usually
- 3:00made of wood or fiberglass and has a curved end.
- 3:03The ball in field hockey is small, hard, and round, about
- 3:07the size of a baseball, but made of solid plastic.
- 3:10Field hockey balls can also move quickly, but not as fast as an
- 3:14ice hockey puck. Field hockey players wear shin
- 3:17guards and mouth guards for protection, but they don't need
- 3:20as much padding as ice hockey players because the game isn't
- 3:23as physical and there's no body checking.
- 3:25The goalie in field hockey wears extra gear, including a helmet,
- 3:29leg guards, and special gloves to help stop the ball from going
- 3:33into the net. Let's talk about how many
- 3:35players are on each team. In ice hockey, each team usually
- 3:39has six players on the ice at a time.
- 3:41That's five skaters and one goalie.
- 3:44The five skaters are divided into 3 forwards and two
- 3:47defensemen. The forwards try to score while
- 3:50the defensemen help protect their own goal.
- 3:53Teams can switch players in and out during the game, and
- 3:56sometimes you'll see players jump over the boards to switch
- 3:59really quickly. This is called line changes.
- 4:03Field hockey teams usually have 11 players on the field at once,
- 4:0610 field players, and one goalie.
- 4:09The players are divided into forwards, midfielders,
- 4:12defenders, and a goalkeeper. The forwards focus on scoring,
- 4:15midfielders play both offense and defense, and defenders help
- 4:19keep the ball away from their goal.
- 4:21Like in soccer, players can be substituted during the game, but
- 4:25usually not as quickly as an ice hockey.
- 4:28Now let's look at the goals and scoring.
- 4:30In ice hockey, the goal is a net that stands at each end of the
- 4:34rink. It's about 1.2 meters tall and
- 4:371.8 meters wide. Players shoot the puck into the
- 4:40net to score a goal. The team with the most goals at
- 4:43the end of the game wins. In field hockey, the goal is a
- 4:47little bigger, about 2.1 meters tall and 3.7 meters wide.
- 4:52Players have to hit the ball into the net, but there's a
- 4:55special rule. They can only score if they hit
- 4:57the ball from inside a marked area called the shooting circle.
- 5:02If the ball is hit from outside the circle, it doesn't count as
- 5:05a goal, even if it goes in the net.
- 5:07Let's talk about the length of the games.
- 5:09An ice hockey game is usually played in three periods, each
- 5:13lasting 20 minutes. There are breaks between
- 5:16periods, and if the score is tied at the end of the game,
- 5:19there can be extra time, called overtime or even a shootout to
- 5:23decide the winner. Field hockey games are a bit
- 5:26different. Traditionally, games were played
- 5:28in two halves of 35 minutes each, but international rules
- 5:32now use four quarters of 15 minutes each.
- 5:35There are short breaks between the quarters, and sometimes
- 5:38there's overtime or a penalty shootout if the game is tied.
- 5:42Did you know that ice hockey is especially popular in countries
- 5:44like Canada, the United States, Russia, Sweden, and Finland?
- 5:49In Canada, hockey is such a big deal that you'll find ice rinks
- 5:52in almost every town and many kids learn to skate and play
- 5:56hockey at a very young age. Field hockey is very popular in
- 6:00countries like India, the Netherlands, Australia, Germany,
- 6:04and England. In India, millions of people
- 6:07watch field hockey matches, and the country has won many Olympic
- 6:11medals in the sport. Here's an interesting fact.
- 6:14Ice hockey and field hockey are both played at the Olympic
- 6:17Games, but at different times. Ice hockey is part of the Winter
- 6:22Olympics because it's played on ice.
- 6:24Field hockey is part of the Summer Olympics because it's
- 6:27played on grass or turf. Let's take a quick look at the
- 6:30rules. In ice hockey, players can use
- 6:33their bodies to block opponents and body checking is allowed.
- 6:36In many leagues. Body checking means using your
- 6:39body to bump into another player to try to take the puck away.
- 6:42However, there are rules to make sure players stay safe and
- 6:46dangerous hits are not allowed. In field hockey, body checking
- 6:50is not allowed. Players must use their sticks
- 6:53and skills to win the ball from opponents.
- 6:55If a player uses their body to block or push someone, the
- 6:58referee will blow the whistle and the other team gets a free
- 7:01hit. Another cool difference is the
- 7:03way the games start. In ice hockey, the game begins
- 7:07with a face off. The referee drops the puck
- 7:09between two players who try to win control for their team.
- 7:13Face offs also happen after every goal and at the start of
- 7:16each period. In field hockey, the game starts
- 7:19with a center pass. One team pushes the ball from
- 7:23the center of the field to a teammate, and the action begins.
- 7:26Did you know that in ice hockey, the surface is so slippery that
- 7:30players can reach speeds of over 30 kilometers per hour?
- 7:34That's faster than most people can run.
- 7:36In field hockey, players run a lot, sometimes as much as 8 to 9
- 7:41kilometers in a single game. That's like running around a big
- 7:44park several times. Let's talk about the skills
- 7:47needed for each sport. In ice hockey, players need to
- 7:50be able to skate quickly, turn sharply, and stop suddenly.
- 7:54They also need fast reflexes to handle the puck with their stick
- 7:58while moving on the ice. Passing and shooting the puck
- 8:01accurately takes a lot of practice.
- 8:03In field hockey, players need to run fast, change direction
- 8:07quickly, and have good balance. Controlling the ball with the
- 8:10stick while running is a key skill.
- 8:13Field hockey players also need to be able to pass, dribble, and
- 8:16shoot with accuracy. Here's a fun fact about the
- 8:19sticks. In ice hockey, players can use
- 8:22both sides of the blade to control the puck.
- 8:24In field hockey, players can only use one side of the stick,
- 8:28the flat side. Using the rounded side is not
- 8:31allowed, so players have to twist their sticks in clever
- 8:33ways to control the ball. You might be wondering about the
- 8:36number of fans. Nice hockey games are often
- 8:39played in big arenas that can hold thousands of cheering fans.
- 8:43The largest hockey arena in the world, the Bell Center in
- 8:46Montreal, Canada, can hold over 21,000 people.
- 8:50Field hockey games are also played in stadiums and during
- 8:54big tournaments like the Olympics or World Cup.
- 8:57The stands can be packed with excited fans waving flags and
- 9:00cheering for their teams. Let's recap what we've learned
- 9:04today. Ice hockey and field hockey are
- 9:06both fast-paced, exciting team sports, but they have some big
- 9:10differences. Ice hockey is played on ice with
- 9:13skates and a puck, while field hockey is played on grass or
- 9:16turf with shoes and a ball. Ice hockey uses more protective
- 9:20gear and allows body checking, while field hockey focuses more
- 9:24on skillful stick work and running.
- 9:27The games are popular in different countries and are even
- 9:29played at different Olympics, Winter for ice hockey and summer
- 9:33for field hockey. Both sports require amazing
- 9:36skills, teamwork and practice grab.
