- 0:00Speaker 1: Donald Countison. One two, No, Donald down, donalds go down.
- 0:05Speaker 1: That's not what I meant.
- 0:06Speaker 2: Three two, Well, then that's you gotta say. You said
- 0:10Speaker 2: count us in. I thought you were like Donald, count
- 0:12Speaker 2: us down. There we go because counting us in is
- 0:15Speaker 2: you know, like the song.
- 0:16Speaker 1: Is like seven eight right exactly, your song count us
- 0:19Speaker 1: into our song?
- 0:20Speaker 2: Donald, I really don't want to anymore.
- 0:22Speaker 1: Five six, seven eight. You want fame, well, fame costs,
- 0:26Speaker 1: and right here is where you start paying in sweat,
- 0:29Speaker 1: Debbie Allen Fame the TV show Thank You.
- 0:32Speaker 3: Here's some stories that show we made about a bunch
- 0:38Speaker 3: of docs and nurses, and I said, here's the story
- 0:43Speaker 3: nets so here yead.
- 0:55Speaker 1: All right, listen, we have Donald one of our first
- 0:59Speaker 1: We have our first real guest.
- 1:01Speaker 2: Yes we do. And I'm really excited about this.
- 1:03Speaker 1: I don't think there could be a more appropriate guest.
- 1:05Speaker 1: Because he's the reason that we're here. He's the reason
- 1:08Speaker 1: we're friends. He's the reason that this show happened, that
- 1:11Speaker 1: so many people across the world love, and it all
- 1:13Speaker 1: came from his brain.
- 1:15Speaker 2: He's the reason why I'm in my why I have
- 1:17Speaker 2: a closet that I can stay in right now.
- 1:19Speaker 1: He's the reason I have a desk. He's the reason
- 1:21Speaker 1: I have a desk. He's the reason I have this
- 1:23Speaker 1: water bottle. I always say that to our next guest
- 1:26Speaker 1: jokingly but also seriously whenever I buy myself, even like
- 1:30Speaker 1: occasionally I buy him dinner and he's so grateful, and
- 1:32Speaker 1: I say, are you kidding? I can only buy you
- 1:34Speaker 1: this dinner because of you, ladies and gentlemen. The creator
- 1:37Speaker 1: of Scrubs, mister Bill Lawrence.
- 1:39Speaker 4: Yeah, I pretended to not even be in the frame,
- 1:44Speaker 4: even though this is not a video thing.
- 1:45Speaker 2: Hey, guys, I know I wish we were recording so
- 1:47Speaker 2: people could see that.
- 1:47Speaker 1: I want people. I want people at home to know
- 1:50Speaker 1: that even though we're not recording the video, Bill hid
- 1:52Speaker 1: on on the Zoom app and made an appearance.
- 1:58Speaker 4: Hey, that was too nice and of an introduction, because
- 2:02Speaker 4: you guys would have both done fine without me. I
- 2:04Speaker 4: like that. I can claim credit for your success and
- 2:06Speaker 4: well being, but you would have found your way regardless.
- 2:10Speaker 1: Well that's nice of you to say, but you definitely
- 2:12Speaker 1: changed both of our lives a lot and a big way,
- 2:16Speaker 1: and also made something that very rarely happens. I'm finding
- 2:20Speaker 1: as I attempt to make TV shows and produce them,
- 2:24Speaker 1: and something that went nine years, and something that is
- 2:28Speaker 1: a global success. And I guess the first logical question
- 2:32Speaker 1: I wrote down in my notes is how did Because
- 2:34Speaker 1: I was listening to this, I want to know how
- 2:36Speaker 1: you came up with the idea? How did it? How
- 2:38Speaker 1: did the seed come to you in the first place?
- 2:41Speaker 4: You guys both know there was a medical advisor on
- 2:43Speaker 4: the show named j D, and he's the real JD,
- 2:47Speaker 4: and he's my best friend in college.
- 2:50Speaker 5: He was a fuck up and a curse on.
- 2:52Speaker 1: You, curse away, Bill, go nuts, let loose.
- 2:57Speaker 4: He was.
- 2:57Speaker 5: He was a screw up.
- 2:59Speaker 4: I went the other way, and.
- 3:02Speaker 5: I used to joke with him because he was such
- 3:04Speaker 5: a bad.
- 3:04Speaker 4: Student that he went back to college to go to
- 3:06Speaker 4: med school a second time.
- 3:08Speaker 5: I mean to pre med a second time.
- 3:09Speaker 4: So we'll getting to med school. I said, my biggest
- 3:11Speaker 4: nightmare would be waking up in an emergency room and
- 3:13Speaker 4: having you standing over me and going, hey, you're.
- 3:15Speaker 5: Gonna be fine.
- 3:17Speaker 4: And I just thought that would be a good TV
- 3:19Speaker 4: show because we used to drink beers and used to
- 3:21Speaker 4: talk about how all these stories, especially the early ones,
- 3:24Speaker 4: are ones straight from his life, you know, worrying that
- 3:26Speaker 4: his friend sowed a piece of gauze up into somebody
- 3:29Speaker 4: falling in love with a different girl in his residency program,
- 3:31Speaker 4: and he's now married to He's a real guy. It's
- 3:34Speaker 4: more relevant than ever because he has become the Kelso
- 3:38Speaker 4: at a Kaiser hospital Wells Peelis, and he's there running
- 3:41Speaker 4: their COVID virus command center today as we speak.
- 3:44Speaker 1: Yeah, I saw that you tweeted something about that, So
- 3:46Speaker 1: tell us, like, because you're in you must be. You're
- 3:48Speaker 1: still best friends, so you must be in contact with
- 3:50Speaker 1: him as he's dealing with all this COVID insanity.
- 3:53Speaker 4: Right, Yeah, he's superpals. He he's a heart surgeon and
- 3:56Speaker 4: a cardiologist. He he still just speaking and gay sometimes
- 4:00Speaker 4: the real JD. But he goes by John so you know,
- 4:03Speaker 4: he put out a tweet the other day saying, hey
- 4:05Speaker 4: to all the doctors and nurses you know that work
- 4:09Speaker 4: with me.
- 4:09Speaker 5: I'm really proud, and I said, hey, is the real JD.
- 4:12Speaker 4: He married the real Elliott and he's out there fighting
- 4:15Speaker 4: the fight and it became viral on a news story
- 4:17Speaker 4: and stuff in our basketball game that Donald has played
- 4:20Speaker 4: in before, and in this episode you can see that
- 4:22Speaker 4: Donald can play ball JD played in that game and
- 4:25Speaker 4: he tore his rotator cuff, so he can't be a
- 4:27Speaker 4: heart surgeon as much because it, you know, aggravates his injury.
- 4:30Speaker 4: So he took the Kelso job the same way. Doctor
- 4:33Speaker 4: Cox took the Kelso job late in life, and he
- 4:34Speaker 4: runs the whole hospital on in those fields.
- 4:36Speaker 2: That said game you speak of is probably the roughest
- 4:40Speaker 2: game I've ever played in in my life. Jaws being broke,
- 4:44Speaker 2: noses broke, its quested.
- 4:47Speaker 5: It's a bunch of dumb comedy writers too.
- 4:49Speaker 2: Man, Oh my gosh, it's violent. It's so violent. It's violent, dude,
- 4:53Speaker 2: it's violent.
- 4:54Speaker 4: It's a lot older now, Donald, we're all, I mean,
- 4:56Speaker 4: we're the old guys. Now, there's a wave of young guy.
- 4:59Speaker 4: My son plays Will and I sent Zach a video
- 5:02Speaker 4: of Will dunking the other day and I was so
- 5:04Speaker 4: excited about it.
- 5:04Speaker 1: Yeah, Bill, send me a video Will dunky. He's like,
- 5:06Speaker 1: you have no idea how proud this makes me?
- 5:12Speaker 4: Donald Donald, Zach doesn't understand, as you know, like to
- 5:16Speaker 4: see somebody dunk. I didn't even get a response. So
- 5:18Speaker 4: Zach's like, oh, yeah, he's thrown that round ball into
- 5:20Speaker 4: the hoop without.
- 5:22Speaker 1: If you if you had sent me that kid singing
- 5:24Speaker 1: bring him Home from lim Is, I would have cried.
- 5:26Speaker 2: You would have lost your mind. You would have lost
- 5:27Speaker 2: your mind. Oh, by the way, Zach, I am so
- 5:32Speaker 2: proud of Will. Oh my god.
- 5:34Speaker 1: I would have had it on repeat. I literally would
- 5:36Speaker 1: have just been playing Will singing bring him Home?
- 5:38Speaker 2: Bill. When you were younger, could you dunk? Did you not?
- 5:42Speaker 2: You cannot dunk? When I was younger, I could. But
- 5:45Speaker 2: when I was a lot younger, yeah, a lot.
- 5:49Speaker 4: Donald Will does it? Will does it now aggressively. It's
- 5:51Speaker 4: pretty cool.
- 5:52Speaker 2: That's awesome. Like on the Spin move on to Break.
- 5:55Speaker 4: You can do it off the dribble, and he can
- 5:57Speaker 4: do it off an hour you he's has troubles, still gripping.
- 6:00Speaker 1: Why are you guys speaking Latin right now? I have
- 6:02Speaker 1: no idea.
- 6:04Speaker 2: He tries, he tries.
- 6:06Speaker 1: I wanted to go back to JD for the real
- 6:08Speaker 1: JD for a second, because I remember back in when
- 6:10Speaker 1: we first started, he had a pager and and they
- 6:14Speaker 1: would literally he'd be at the hospital advising us. So,
- 6:16Speaker 1: just for those of you who don't know, a medical
- 6:18Speaker 1: advisor on the show is obviously showing us everyone. The
- 6:21Speaker 1: extra is Donald and I all the doctors how to
- 6:24Speaker 1: look like we know what we're doing and this is
- 6:26Speaker 1: how you do this, and this is what you'd be
- 6:27Speaker 1: doing in this particular situation. And this was still in
- 6:30Speaker 1: the era of the fax machine, and I remember JD
- 6:32Speaker 1: would he'd be talking to us and saying, yeah, hold
- 6:35Speaker 1: it like that, do that, and then he'd get a
- 6:37Speaker 1: page and then he'd go receive a fax and he'd
- 6:39Speaker 1: look down at the facts of someone's EKG and he'd
- 6:41Speaker 1: be like, uh, I should probably get goo and.
- 6:48Speaker 4: Yeah. You know. He used to joke about that that
- 6:49Speaker 4: he liked the gig with us so much more than
- 6:52Speaker 4: his real gig, you know, because he was a grunt.
- 6:54Speaker 4: You know, he was still I mean it was out
- 6:56Speaker 4: of residency, but you know he was a slaven a
- 6:59Speaker 4: way back then to pay off med school loans and
- 7:01Speaker 4: kind of being around Hollywood. He loved it.
- 7:03Speaker 2: You know. His wife would also uh cover for him
- 7:06Speaker 2: when he was when he couldn't be there, she'd come
- 7:09Speaker 2: by and you know, we'd run things by her. Speaking
- 7:12Speaker 2: of this episode, it starts off in the O R
- 7:15Speaker 2: and I remember thinking, Oh, this is gonna be awesome.
- 7:18Speaker 2: I get to show my dramatic face in the middle
- 7:21Speaker 2: of surgery. It'll be just like all the doctor shows
- 7:25Speaker 2: that are on right now, you know what I mean.
- 7:28Speaker 2: And then we get there and you're like, no, put
- 7:30Speaker 2: the mask on. What we put the mask on? You're like, no,
- 7:34Speaker 2: you guys, we we have to wear the masks. And
- 7:36Speaker 2: I was like, wait, but we're supposed to be acting.
- 7:38Speaker 2: This is nearly and you were like no, no, no, no,
- 7:40Speaker 2: no no, put the masks on.
- 7:41Speaker 4: Put the mask with your eyes and do it with
- 7:43Speaker 4: your eyes.
- 7:44Speaker 2: And I remember being, okay, this could this is gonna be.
- 7:47Speaker 2: This is okay looking back at it now, we were
- 7:51Speaker 2: other than mash. I think the first show is really
- 7:54Speaker 2: to do that. All of these other shows were doing
- 7:56Speaker 2: surgery without the masks on.
- 7:58Speaker 4: And Donald it's a great point because you know, JD
- 8:00Speaker 4: is most proud of even though we took so many
- 8:02Speaker 4: liberties and ragofy and stuff. It's been often said that
- 8:06Speaker 4: this for at least medical professionals, that this was the
- 8:08Speaker 4: most realistic medical show, you know, just on what it
- 8:11Speaker 4: was like.
- 8:12Speaker 1: I get that all the time, Bill and people on
- 8:14Speaker 1: my social media and everything will say and even I
- 8:16Speaker 1: think the American Medical Association said that, so so tell
- 8:20Speaker 1: us about that when you when you started, did you
- 8:23Speaker 1: I've always said and correct me if I'm wrong, that
- 8:25Speaker 1: you because the show is going to be silly and
- 8:27Speaker 1: go off in crazy tangents. That you said to your
- 8:30Speaker 1: writers and obviously a mantra to yourself that no, I
- 8:33Speaker 1: want the medicine to always be as accurate as possible.
- 8:38Speaker 4: We had to they, you know, they initially even before
- 8:40Speaker 4: I get cast, you guys talked to about making that
- 8:42Speaker 4: show on a sound stage, and I'm like, man, this
- 8:44Speaker 4: show's gonna be so silly in so many ways. If
- 8:46Speaker 4: it's not in a real hospital, people are going to
- 8:48Speaker 4: tell it's fake. And so we used to have this
- 8:51Speaker 4: board of you know, we do all the funny fantasies
- 8:55Speaker 4: and jokes and silly shit, and then we had this
- 8:58Speaker 4: board of ways to make it real, you know, and
- 9:02Speaker 4: one of them. Donald was talking about. One of them
- 9:04Speaker 4: the masks. But you guys need to look competent, people
- 9:07Speaker 4: needing to die, the rooms to be grungy, and to
- 9:11Speaker 4: not have as saturated a look color wise. You know,
- 9:14Speaker 4: we just wanted we thought like we made everything that
- 9:16Speaker 4: wasn't funny real, that maybe it would work.
- 9:20Speaker 5: Going back and forth, between serious and goofy tone.
- 9:22Speaker 4: You know, I heard Donald talking about that in your
- 9:24Speaker 4: other episode, about how the colors didn't pop and everything
- 9:27Speaker 4: looked kind of dank and you know, and disgusting intentionally.
- 9:31Speaker 1: When you came up, you were coming off of Spin
- 9:33Speaker 1: City for those of you who don't know.
- 9:35Speaker 2: But I was going to ask, should we go through
- 9:37Speaker 2: I mean, not that you want to sit here and
- 9:38Speaker 2: discuss your resume or anything like that.
- 9:41Speaker 1: Yeah, he would, he'd love to.
- 9:43Speaker 2: We gave a little story about what we were doing
- 9:45Speaker 2: before Scrubs and how our life changed before Scrubs. I
- 9:48Speaker 2: imagine your life changed. I remember the table read. I'm
- 9:52Speaker 2: just saying I would love to hear.
- 9:54Speaker 1: Yeah, we never heard like how I mean, you were
- 9:56Speaker 1: already successfully You're coming off Spin City, but how you know,
- 9:59Speaker 1: Donald and I went on and on about how it
- 10:00Speaker 1: was such a shock to our lives. I mean, this
- 10:03Speaker 1: was your first hit show on your own. I mean,
- 10:05Speaker 1: was that a big change in your life?
- 10:07Speaker 4: Yeah? You know what I had had such a weird
- 10:10Speaker 4: experience on Spin City that I was partnered up with
- 10:12Speaker 4: an iconic star from my generation. You know, you guys
- 10:16Speaker 4: were so kind of Mike Fox when he came and
- 10:18Speaker 4: guested on the show. But that was such a surreal
- 10:21Speaker 4: experience for me writing for Mike. You know, it's like
- 10:25Speaker 4: the back to the guy that I grew up with,
- 10:27Speaker 4: this particular experience. Even before I met you guys, I
- 10:31Speaker 4: was like, all right, you can't have any expectations.
- 10:33Speaker 5: There's no huge movie star doing this. You guys have
- 10:36Speaker 5: probably heard me say before.
- 10:38Speaker 4: I decided to treat this whole thing like, all right,
- 10:40Speaker 4: I wrote the script.
- 10:41Speaker 5: No one's ever gonna make it. They're gonna let me
- 10:44Speaker 5: shoot the pilot.
- 10:44Speaker 4: It'll never be on. The show's going to be on.
- 10:48Speaker 4: It'll never last a whole season, So I'll make the
- 10:50Speaker 4: janitor an imaginary character, you know what I mean. Oh,
- 10:53Speaker 4: it lasted the whole season. It'll never be on a
- 10:55Speaker 4: season two. And so to me, that kind of protected me.
- 11:00Speaker 4: You know.
- 11:02Speaker 5: I thought that I was making something like Freaks and.
- 11:05Speaker 4: Geeks, you know, that would be people go hey, that
- 11:08Speaker 4: was really good. And it got canceled after four episodes,
- 11:10Speaker 4: and it was surreal to me that it kept working.
- 11:13Speaker 4: That makes sense to you, guys.
- 11:14Speaker 5: So I was really into the art of it all.
- 11:16Speaker 4: Like at a table read, I remember just being so
- 11:19Speaker 4: happy that everyone top to bottom was so good, you know,
- 11:23Speaker 4: and from what I had done, not necessarily popping you know,
- 11:28Speaker 4: jokes in a sitcom style and playing it real. And
- 11:31Speaker 4: I'm like, oh, this is a show that I'd watch
- 11:33Speaker 4: even though no one else will. So yeah, I was
- 11:36Speaker 4: resigned very early to the show not being successful.
- 11:38Speaker 5: It was very weird.
- 11:39Speaker 1: I never asked you this question, but be coming off
- 11:41Speaker 1: of Spin City and this was kind of the beginning
- 11:43Speaker 1: of a big single camera comedy craze for those of
- 11:46Speaker 1: you who don't know the difference being a sitcom traditionally
- 11:49Speaker 1: a set in front of a live audience and then
- 11:51Speaker 1: a single camera we shoot like a movie. Was there
- 11:54Speaker 1: any pressure on you to make this idea you had
- 11:57Speaker 1: a sitcom and did you have to affg yeah.
- 11:59Speaker 4: They The best thing that Spin City bought me was
- 12:02Speaker 4: the financial and professional security to what happens in television
- 12:07Speaker 4: often is you'll create a show. Hey, I'm going to
- 12:10Speaker 4: do a show about a young married couple and what
- 12:13Speaker 4: it's really like and I'm not going to compromise it
- 12:15Speaker 4: at all, and then you'll go sell it to a
- 12:17Speaker 4: network and when you come out, you're like, all right,
- 12:19Speaker 4: it's the same show. I mean, we have a kid
- 12:21Speaker 4: that's six that speaks like a thirty year old and
- 12:24Speaker 4: I do have superpowers now, but otherwise otherwise it is
- 12:29Speaker 4: like the exact same, right, And so with this show,
- 12:32Speaker 4: when I said, I was so convinced to be a failure,
- 12:35Speaker 4: because like early on ABC, we're like, hey, that show
- 12:38Speaker 4: is interesting. Maybe the doctor Cox character should be married,
- 12:41Speaker 4: and we'll just it's a sitcom.
- 12:43Speaker 5: We see him at home, we see.
- 12:44Speaker 4: Him at work. I'm like, yeah, I'm not going to
- 12:45Speaker 4: do that. And it was never really an issue for
- 12:48Speaker 4: me because I was so convinced that this would never
- 12:50Speaker 4: work anyways. I just wanted to stick with what I
- 12:52Speaker 4: thought would be cool, you know, and what would work.
- 12:55Speaker 4: So there was a lot of pressure. The only thing
- 12:59Speaker 4: that this episode sode resonates in a huge way because
- 13:02Speaker 4: the president of NBC at the time was convinced that
- 13:04Speaker 4: single camera comedy shows weren't funny, and uh so I'm like,
- 13:10Speaker 4: I'm going to keep this show on by decorating it
- 13:13Speaker 4: with every bell and whistle I can. So this is
- 13:15Speaker 4: one of the last I think there's only a couple
- 13:18Speaker 4: more episodes after this that still have sound effects.
- 13:20Speaker 1: Yeah, that's something I wanted to talk about is we
- 13:23Speaker 1: start going through the show.
- 13:26Speaker 2: Just so we're clear, though, who was the president of
- 13:28Speaker 2: the network? Was the president? What was Sassa? What was Sassa?
- 13:34Speaker 4: Scott Sassa was very sassified.
- 13:35Speaker 1: All right, So, uh, this is Bill Bill in an
- 13:38Speaker 1: episode that will have aired by the time this airs,
- 13:40Speaker 1: because in episode two we talk about the infamous time
- 13:43Speaker 1: that Donald gave a nouggie to Jeff Zucker and he said,
- 13:46Speaker 1: please Donald, no, And but my I.
- 13:49Speaker 2: Was I always thought at the time, I thought that
- 13:53Speaker 2: Jeff Zucker was Scott Sass's assistant.
- 13:58Speaker 4: No, he was, he was. Scott Sasa got shuffled out
- 14:02Speaker 4: right as Jeff Zucker came in. Jeff Zucker now run CNA.
- 14:05Speaker 4: He's one of the most powerful guys you know in
- 14:07Speaker 4: the news world. Scott Sasa is claimed to fame with
- 14:11Speaker 4: me because there's always a disconnect with executives that really
- 14:14Speaker 4: didn't know how this worked.
- 14:15Speaker 5: And what's really interesting is if you.
- 14:17Speaker 4: Look at the credits of Scrubs, the only title in
- 14:22Speaker 4: the writers that has writer next to it is staff writer,
- 14:24Speaker 4: which is the lowest rank on the totem pole. And
- 14:27Speaker 4: then the other writers on the show, our story editor,
- 14:30Speaker 4: co producer, things.
- 14:31Speaker 5: That don't necessarily say writer.
- 14:33Speaker 4: And when I handed in the first three scripts, you know,
- 14:35Speaker 4: a showrunner always rewrites everything on any show.
- 14:39Speaker 5: We had a great writing staff, but I was still
- 14:40Speaker 5: doing that. A Scott Sasa called me up.
- 14:43Speaker 4: He's like, I read the first three scripts and I
- 14:45Speaker 4: got to say, those three staff writers you hired, because
- 14:49Speaker 4: he thought that was the whole writing staff was three people.
- 14:51Speaker 4: Those three straft writers you hired really nailed it and
- 14:53Speaker 4: really captured your voice from the pilot. I wanted to
- 14:56Speaker 4: be like, well, first of all, they didn't because I
- 14:59Speaker 4: wrote the and secondly, secondly, those three staff writers are
- 15:03Speaker 4: all like twenty one and they've never worked on a
- 15:05Speaker 4: show before.
- 15:07Speaker 5: So crazy man.
- 15:08Speaker 4: And then he shockingly got fired and uh, Jeff Sucker
- 15:12Speaker 4: replaced him right before Donald kissed his head.
- 15:14Speaker 1: Right kiss his head.
- 15:17Speaker 2: Yes. Yeah.
- 15:19Speaker 4: By the way, you know what, we missed a good
- 15:20Speaker 4: bit of scrubs trivia. I got to say it. I
- 15:22Speaker 4: forget it. Do you guys remember Real j D's wife's name,
- 15:26Speaker 4: She's Elliott and real do you know her last name?
- 15:31Speaker 4: The maid last name? No, her maiden last name was
- 15:34Speaker 4: is Dolly Clock. I'm horrible at naming characters. Do you
- 15:37Speaker 4: remember a character on our show named Molly Clock.
- 15:40Speaker 1: That was Heather Graham.
- 15:42Speaker 4: Yes, wow you John. Yeah.
- 15:45Speaker 1: By the way, a lot of our fans Bill On
- 15:47Speaker 1: when we put the first episode out, we asked the question.
- 15:51Speaker 1: I asked a random question saying I don't even know
- 15:53Speaker 1: what sitcom set that was, and like my whole Twitter
- 15:55Speaker 1: feed was like answering that it was the Damon Wayne's show,
- 16:00Speaker 1: Kids Kids. There you go, So everyone probably Donald question
- 16:05Speaker 1: before right away?
- 16:06Speaker 2: You know my favorite, my favorite part of this show
- 16:09Speaker 2: and it's not even the a storyline in this episode
- 16:12Speaker 2: is the clock, the countdown. You could have made the
- 16:15Speaker 2: whole show about that. That was That could have been
- 16:17Speaker 2: the whole show.
- 16:19Speaker 4: That's that's a good writer trick. You put an imaginary
- 16:22Speaker 4: ticking clock on something and everybody invests in it.
- 16:24Speaker 1: Yeah, that was clever. Wait before we get to the show,
- 16:26Speaker 1: I just want to ask another trivia thing of Bill.
- 16:29Speaker 1: I got so geeked out. I really did my homework
- 16:31Speaker 1: this week.
- 16:32Speaker 4: And like, before you go, I want to tell Donald
- 16:36Speaker 4: because he can look him up. There's a picture of
- 16:38Speaker 4: Donald and the surgeon he was based on. Donald would
- 16:42Speaker 4: be named John Turk because that's the surgeon's name. But
- 16:45Speaker 4: j D was already John, so he became Chris Turk.
- 16:48Speaker 4: There's a picture of you with your arm around John
- 16:50Speaker 4: Turk when he visited set once, and I'm not even
- 16:52Speaker 4: sure who he was.
- 16:54Speaker 2: I remember when he came and visited. He was like,
- 16:55Speaker 2: I'm Turk, and I remember him being white and me
- 16:57Speaker 2: being like, oh snap, but you're.
- 17:04Speaker 1: Donald was like, you're not. I'm I want to just
- 17:10Speaker 1: want to do one other bit of trivia, that is
- 17:12Speaker 1: that ABC passed on the show. Yeah, so for those
- 17:17Speaker 1: of you who don't know, the show is produced by
- 17:20Speaker 1: ABC Studios, and ABC the network gets first crack at
- 17:25Speaker 1: things if the studios produces it. And our show ended
- 17:28Speaker 1: up on NBC. So tell us how that happened.
- 17:30Speaker 5: The dude is a true story.
- 17:32Speaker 4: And I'm not even going to out him because hes
- 17:34Speaker 4: a nice man. When I pitched this show to the
- 17:37Speaker 4: people that ran the ABC network, Uh, one of the
- 17:40Speaker 4: dudes had a chair that you know, kind of blocked
- 17:43Speaker 4: you could wean back into that blocked the view of
- 17:45Speaker 4: his head. And about midway through the pitch, like a guy,
- 17:48Speaker 4: like a bad guy in a movie, and midway through
- 17:51Speaker 4: the pitch we all heard audible snoring.
- 17:54Speaker 5: You had a night I think before.
- 17:57Speaker 2: B b B B b b B.
- 18:00Speaker 4: And I was literally like, I don't think this pitch
- 18:02Speaker 4: is going that well. Guys like, I'm not sure this
- 18:08Speaker 4: is what you would call a sale in the room
- 18:11Speaker 4: because that the dude that the dude that buys is snoozing.
- 18:14Speaker 4: So they didn't buy it, and the guy that ran
- 18:18Speaker 4: ABC Studios said, you got to wait five months. But
- 18:21Speaker 4: then since they hated it, I'll say, hey, can I
- 18:24Speaker 4: have permission to go sell this somewhere else? And they'll
- 18:27Speaker 4: think it'll never sell, so they'll say okay, And then
- 18:29Speaker 4: I went and sold TENBC.
- 18:30Speaker 5: But it was why the life of our show was
- 18:32Speaker 5: so weird.
- 18:33Speaker 4: We were one of the only shows on NBC completely
- 18:38Speaker 4: owned by ABC, which is why time slot would be
- 18:41Speaker 4: moved around and not always protected and stuff.
- 18:43Speaker 5: So it was it was a weird business arrangement.
- 18:45Speaker 1: I always wonder how that goes in the TV landscape
- 18:48Speaker 1: when like, you know, you hear these stories of oh,
- 18:50Speaker 1: every like everybody passed on Breaking Bad, you know, and
- 18:53Speaker 1: the guy at ABC who passed on scrubs, Like I
- 18:55Speaker 1: just wonder if they if they fuck with each other
- 18:57Speaker 1: in the hallways, like good job, Tim, you know, the.
- 19:01Speaker 4: Moment I had. There is a great guy at ABC
- 19:03Speaker 4: who ran it for a while and is now a
- 19:05Speaker 4: producer named Stu Bloomberg. And he ran into me after
- 19:08Speaker 4: our first year and he goes, you know, I didn't
- 19:10Speaker 4: he heard that pitch. He was there.
- 19:12Speaker 5: He's like, I heard that pitch and I didn't get it.
- 19:13Speaker 5: Now I get it. I feel like an idiot. And
- 19:15Speaker 5: I thought, oh, that's really cool.
- 19:16Speaker 4: So it was. He was very nice about it.
- 19:18Speaker 5: At least he was not the one that fell asleep.
- 19:20Speaker 1: Yeah, will you tell us about casting Turk?
- 19:23Speaker 2: And Wow, you're just going to get right into it.
- 19:26Speaker 1: Well, I literally have like hours of questions for Bill,
- 19:30Speaker 1: but I know we want to also do the episode,
- 19:31Speaker 1: But tell tell us about just you know about We
- 19:34Speaker 1: obviously want to know from your experience because we shared
- 19:36Speaker 1: our experience in the in the first episode, but your
- 19:39Speaker 1: experience of of finding Donald.
- 19:41Speaker 4: Uh.
- 19:41Speaker 5: I was a Donald fan already.
- 19:43Speaker 4: I'd seen Klulis, you know, and uh, I just thought
- 19:45Speaker 4: he was really funny and and and he killed all
- 19:47Speaker 4: his auditions and uh in the test part of it.
- 19:53Speaker 4: You know, it's really interesting because I feel like I
- 19:58Speaker 4: both hurt and then saved Donald in a way. To
- 20:01Speaker 4: make myself look like a hero feel pretty cool about it,
- 20:04Speaker 4: which is, you know, the one thing I tell people
- 20:07Speaker 4: that don't understand what network tests used to be. It
- 20:11Speaker 4: literally used to be that you would come as an
- 20:14Speaker 4: actor and actress and stand in the head of casting's
- 20:18Speaker 4: office while twenty people were in the back sitting or
- 20:23Speaker 4: you know, leaning against the window judging you, and you'd
- 20:26Speaker 4: have one chance. If you're actually shooting the show, you'd
- 20:29Speaker 4: have twenty chances, but you'd have one chance to do
- 20:32Speaker 4: it not mess up, you know, and also somehow make
- 20:36Speaker 4: a room of people that all feel weird to be
- 20:38Speaker 4: standing in someone's office anyways. Laugh.
- 20:41Speaker 5: So I used to tell everybody.
- 20:42Speaker 4: You know, the biggest curse in the world is low energy.
- 20:47Speaker 4: You know what I mean, because if you come into
- 20:48Speaker 4: those low energy everybody's going to be like, oh, this
- 20:50Speaker 4: is horrible. And the one mistake I made with Donald
- 20:54Speaker 4: is if you tell Donald, once you dial up that
- 20:57Speaker 4: energy to eleven, I know where this is show, why
- 21:03Speaker 4: don't you make sure you dial that energy up to eleven?
- 21:05Speaker 5: Everybody, Donald, I mean Donald's like, hello Los Angeles. And
- 21:13Speaker 5: he came in and he did he did his audition.
- 21:19Speaker 4: And the truth is he did crush all the comedy
- 21:22Speaker 4: about when he left. They're like that guy's energy was
- 21:26Speaker 4: fantastic and he's really funny, but he very obviously can't
- 21:29Speaker 4: do any of the sincere or dramatic moments because he's
- 21:32Speaker 4: an insane person. And and I'm like, no, no, no,
- 21:38Speaker 4: you can that's me.
- 21:39Speaker 2: That's me.
- 21:40Speaker 5: And they never do this.
- 21:41Speaker 4: But I had luckily been through the process before in
- 21:42Speaker 4: a different show, and so I went out to Donald
- 21:45Speaker 4: and tried to make it very grave because I wanted
- 21:48Speaker 4: him to come in then and just play the drama
- 21:51Speaker 4: of everything, you know, because I'm like, I told all
- 21:53Speaker 4: of them, I'm like, look, that's my note. And if
- 21:56Speaker 4: he comes back and does it the other way, you'll
- 21:57Speaker 4: see you can do whatever we want.
- 21:58Speaker 5: It's a single camera show, you know.
- 22:00Speaker 4: And I went back to Donald and I'm like, I
- 22:03Speaker 4: think I said something like all right, they thought you
- 22:05Speaker 4: suck shit. Yeah, things, I thought.
- 22:08Speaker 2: You would come to tell me, all right, you got
- 22:10Speaker 2: the part. You were like, so I'm walking out. I
- 22:12Speaker 2: remember skipping into the room like here we go, Here
- 22:16Speaker 2: we fucking go, And you were like so that really
- 22:19Speaker 2: was horrible.
- 22:21Speaker 5: For them. For them, that was too much.
- 22:24Speaker 4: I think much is the word no, but the uh
- 22:27Speaker 4: but then I just we talked for a while and
- 22:29Speaker 4: I'm just like, just dial it down and now play
- 22:31Speaker 4: it like it's not a comedy and play the drama
- 22:32Speaker 4: of it.
- 22:33Speaker 5: Donald came back in, and this is.
- 22:35Speaker 4: A compliment to his acting ability. He came back in
- 22:38Speaker 4: and then he did it as if he wasn't looking
- 22:40Speaker 4: for any laughs or energy, and he walked out. I'm
- 22:42Speaker 4: sure shook by doing it again. And the second he
- 22:45Speaker 4: walked out, the head of NBC casting gout named Mark Hirschfeld,
- 22:48Speaker 4: was like, Oh, I see it totally. He's got it.
- 22:50Speaker 2: Yeah, thank you, well, thank you well. First of all,
- 22:53Speaker 2: thank you very much for being a hero. And ste
- 22:56Speaker 2: I'm not a here.
- 22:57Speaker 4: I don't have the best bedside manner.
- 22:58Speaker 5: You guys know that.
- 22:59Speaker 2: Yeah, but it doesn't matter though. Man, you got the
- 23:01Speaker 2: point across. And look, dude, twenty something years later, I
- 23:05Speaker 2: owe you a lot. Bro.
- 23:09Speaker 1: Well, I remember it's so intimidating, I almost I think
- 23:11Speaker 1: that may have been the first time I ever made
- 23:13Speaker 1: it to a network test and it was down to
- 23:15Speaker 1: four of us and literally everyone there must have been
- 23:18Speaker 1: thirty people crammed into a small office. It was the
- 23:21Speaker 1: most awkward environment to ever try and do a good job.
- 23:25Speaker 2: What was this for?
- 23:26Speaker 1: This was for Scrubs?
- 23:28Speaker 2: Really?
- 23:28Speaker 1: It was that guy Mark, wasn't it bill Mark Hirsche Show. Yeah.
- 23:32Speaker 1: Everyone was crammed into his office and I was very nervous,
- 23:36Speaker 1: and Sarah was there to read with me for her scenes.
- 23:40Speaker 1: But I remember feeling my adrenaline come up, like I
- 23:42Speaker 1: was almost going to have a panic attack, and I
- 23:44Speaker 1: was like, not today.
- 23:47Speaker 4: Well, you know, you know, I cheated. Everybody cheats. I
- 23:50Speaker 4: cheated for the people I wanted to get the part.
- 23:53Speaker 4: So you guys both had extra lines and jokes and
- 23:55Speaker 4: moments that we had all come up with and found
- 23:59Speaker 4: together that other apps actors weren't doing right. And then
- 24:02Speaker 4: when I at the beginning, when I go in and
- 24:03Speaker 4: talk to everybody, I'm like, hey, I'm really into everybody
- 24:05Speaker 4: bringing their own flavor. And so some of these actors
- 24:08Speaker 4: and actresses have stuff that they've brought on their own
- 24:10Speaker 4: and I let them do it. But it's not true,
- 24:13Speaker 4: you know what I mean. It's just you two and
- 24:15Speaker 4: Sarah had stuff that you brought on your own that
- 24:17Speaker 4: we let you do.
- 24:18Speaker 2: Well, I didn't.
- 24:18Speaker 1: I remember the time thinking that's so awesome. He feels
- 24:22Speaker 1: like he's rooting for me, but is he doing that
- 24:24Speaker 1: with everyone? Like I didn't you know that? No, I knew.
- 24:27Speaker 1: I knew since then you've told me that. But at
- 24:28Speaker 1: the time I'm thinking, like I think I think I
- 24:31Speaker 1: might be his favorite, Like I'm getting the extra jokes.
- 24:34Speaker 4: The you know, the only one that it's great trivia,
- 24:36Speaker 4: the only one that we didn't know what was going
- 24:40Speaker 4: to happen, and we shifted gears a little bit of
- 24:43Speaker 4: like what are we going to do if this doesn't happen?
- 24:45Speaker 4: It's fascinating And when you have him on the guest
- 24:48Speaker 4: as a guest, I'll tell you I wrote in the
- 24:50Speaker 4: script like we were looking for a John c McGinley
- 24:52Speaker 4: type for doctor Cox. And John came in and read
- 24:56Speaker 4: it and was fucking he was amazing. And then at
- 24:59Speaker 4: the studio he did something completely different and high energy
- 25:05Speaker 4: John and his intensity dial had been dialed up like
- 25:08Speaker 4: ten notches, and the reaction of the studio was like, whoa,
- 25:12Speaker 4: that is way too And unlike with you guys, I
- 25:17Speaker 4: wasn't even confident enough to bring John back in and go, hey,
- 25:20Speaker 4: you did that wrong, because I feel like what would
- 25:23Speaker 4: follow would be a hard blow to the face, you know,
- 25:28Speaker 4: Oh my god, get off my neck, Get off my
- 25:30Speaker 4: neck and uh.
- 25:33Speaker 5: And so we had this giant level. Me and the
- 25:36Speaker 5: casting directors, you know, bretton Debbie.
- 25:38Speaker 4: Were like, uh, oh man, who's it going to be
- 25:41Speaker 4: if it? Because for us it was John McGinley, And
- 25:43Speaker 4: we went into the network and just said just cross
- 25:46Speaker 4: your fingers. And he came into the network and did
- 25:49Speaker 4: it completely different without anybody having spoken to him. And
- 25:52Speaker 4: this the Johnny C dialed down ten notches and literally
- 25:55Speaker 4: walked out of there as if with the thought. He
- 25:58Speaker 4: almost said I got this as he left. It was
- 26:00Speaker 4: just so johnny C. He was older, he did it.
- 26:03Speaker 4: And then I'm like, you feel good? He's like, cash,
- 26:05Speaker 4: see you.
- 26:11Speaker 1: Johnny C had so many expressions that he would always say.
- 26:14Speaker 1: We were talking about five good ones and and cash
- 26:17Speaker 1: and and how he's better now?
- 26:19Speaker 4: How you doing better now?
- 26:20Speaker 2: Better now?
- 26:21Speaker 1: How are you doing? Here's five good ones for you.
- 26:23Speaker 1: How you doing better now? And then how he'd say
- 26:27Speaker 1: to the editor. We'd finish a scene and our editor's
- 26:30Speaker 1: name was John Michelle, and he goes, well, we gave
- 26:32Speaker 1: John Michelle some momo.
- 26:35Speaker 4: Some ammo. I love that dude, man, that's funny.
- 26:38Speaker 2: Speaking that you went out for like a Johnny c
- 26:40Speaker 2: type and everything like that. I find it so funny
- 26:43Speaker 2: that when that's almost like a gift and a curse
- 26:45Speaker 2: when they when they say that we talked about this
- 26:48Speaker 2: in the last podcast, you know what I mean When
- 26:51Speaker 2: they say we're looking for a Zach Brafft type, they're
- 26:53Speaker 2: not looking for Zach braff though. They're looking for a Zach.
- 26:56Speaker 1: Braff They want Zach braff Ish.
- 26:59Speaker 4: You know what, Although I think I thought it's different
- 27:02Speaker 4: if like and this is a compliment, like right now,
- 27:05Speaker 4: both of you guys, you say Zach Brafford, Donald Faizon,
- 27:07Speaker 4: they're going TV star. When I said John C McGinley type,
- 27:11Speaker 4: at the time, it just meant a character actor, you know,
- 27:14Speaker 4: with kind of an intensity thing. It wasn't like he
- 27:17Speaker 4: was a household name, you know what I mean. So
- 27:19Speaker 4: I don't think it cursed him as much because there's
- 27:23Speaker 4: no insult to him. Seven out of ten people that
- 27:25Speaker 4: read the script or like, no, no, no, cool, who's
- 27:27Speaker 4: John C McGinley, you know what I mean?
- 27:29Speaker 5: And so he didn't.
- 27:33Speaker 4: Yes, you guy, you mean off the space, but that's
- 27:39Speaker 4: a different guy. No, it's the same guy.
- 27:41Speaker 5: No, that's not the same guy.
- 27:43Speaker 4: So uh now if you say John c McGinley type,
- 27:46Speaker 4: people are like, oh yeah, arms crossed, super intense, you know,
- 27:49Speaker 4: but that scary, scary, intimidating.
- 27:55Speaker 1: And then we were we were afraid of Bill in
- 27:57Speaker 1: the beginning, but then when we got like more friends.
- 28:00Speaker 2: Said that, well, you know, I did say one thing.
- 28:02Speaker 2: I did say one thing, and because of it, because
- 28:05Speaker 2: of it, it stuck with me for the rest of
- 28:08Speaker 2: the fucking show. And I said one time, I was like,
- 28:11Speaker 2: you know, Bill said to everybody, He was like, look,
- 28:14Speaker 2: I'm going to write for all of you whatever you do,
- 28:17Speaker 2: just don't come in my fucking office and say, how
- 28:19Speaker 2: come I'm not in the show this week. And so
- 28:22Speaker 2: as a joke, I went into his office. I was like, dude,
- 28:25Speaker 2: I'm fucking barely in the show this week. And he
- 28:28Speaker 2: was like, oh, yeah, you got Faison And that stuck
- 28:31Speaker 2: with me. But do you remember phase on dude, Oh.
- 28:35Speaker 1: My goodness, I totally forgot about that. So Donald did that.
- 28:40Speaker 1: And then for the rest of the show, when you
- 28:41Speaker 1: were when you were late, when you barely had anything
- 28:43Speaker 1: to do in the episode, people like, oh man, I
- 28:44Speaker 1: got faison, I gotason. I remember.
- 28:47Speaker 5: There's only two things I remember like that.
- 28:48Speaker 4: I remember fasoned, and I remember even saying to guest actors,
- 28:54Speaker 4: see if you guys remember this. A guest actor would
- 28:56Speaker 4: be like, I still don't think I nailed that line.
- 28:58Speaker 5: I'm like, dude, I don't have time for you to
- 29:00Speaker 5: Sarah one Morsey.
- 29:01Speaker 1: Because there's a song one Sarah one more. She wants
- 29:09Speaker 1: one more when she's had seven. Because Sarah, no matter
- 29:16Speaker 1: how many takes she did like, she'd be like the
- 29:18Speaker 1: director would always be like, Okay, Sarah, you good. Can
- 29:19Speaker 1: we move on? One more?
- 29:21Speaker 5: One more?
- 29:22Speaker 4: And I'll be like, there's something so good about a
- 29:24Speaker 4: confused guest actor's face when I'm like, dude, I don't
- 29:27Speaker 4: have time to Sarah one Morsey right now?
- 29:29Speaker 5: Thought I was speaking like kling On.
- 29:30Speaker 4: It is gibberish.
- 29:31Speaker 1: That song had like a nice hook to it. She
- 29:33Speaker 1: wants one more when she's had five.
- 29:36Speaker 4: So hey, you know what's interesting? I can I remember
- 29:41Speaker 4: something donald about someone choosing to take in this episode.
- 29:44Speaker 4: I wish I could remember who said. It might have
- 29:46Speaker 4: been Neil Goldman because he was up on set, but
- 29:49Speaker 4: it's in the cut, and I didn't have it in
- 29:51Speaker 4: the initial cut, and he said there's one take where
- 29:54Speaker 4: Donald comes in and says, uh, does has anybody seen
- 29:59Speaker 4: my keys? How about my wallet? And he says, hell
- 30:01Speaker 4: about my wallet? Like Chris Rock about. I literally went
- 30:07Speaker 4: back to the cut and I went back to the cut,
- 30:09Speaker 4: watched that master and You're like, how about my wallet?
- 30:13Speaker 1: Donald? Was that Chris Rock inspired?
- 30:14Speaker 2: I wanted to ask you, now, that's probably Eddie Murphy inspired. Obviously, Yeah,
- 30:19Speaker 2: but it was there. How well, there's there's that one
- 30:22Speaker 2: and the one that we used to laugh at all
- 30:25Speaker 2: the time from this episode is I tried to discover something.
- 30:36Speaker 2: I remember we laughed for days about that.
- 30:39Speaker 1: You're really funny in this episode.
- 30:40Speaker 4: I wanted to say, yes, you are.
- 30:47Speaker 2: Now that we're talking about the episode, I.
- 30:51Speaker 1: Was going to say that we can segue to these
- 30:52Speaker 1: This is.
- 30:53Speaker 2: Episode three, uh, my best Friend's Mistake, and first of all,
- 30:58Speaker 2: as a show, caught our stride. I feel like in
- 31:01Speaker 2: this episode. Now, the next episode that's after this is
- 31:05Speaker 2: My Old Lady and I think that's the third episode
- 31:07Speaker 2: we shot, but this episode aired before My Old Lady Whip.
- 31:12Speaker 1: I'm correct, Bill, Why why were Donald and I? You'll
- 31:15Speaker 1: have the answer to this. Both Donald and I forever
- 31:18Speaker 1: have always said, oh, one of three was the episode
- 31:20Speaker 1: where we lose three patients, and it was kind of
- 31:22Speaker 1: like a good hitting our stride moment. And then both
- 31:24Speaker 1: of us this morning went to go rewatch the show
- 31:27Speaker 1: and we're like, oh, one of three is not that?
- 31:29Speaker 1: Did they twitch around?
- 31:30Speaker 5: I'm almost positive, but I gotta go look.
- 31:33Speaker 4: The pilot and the next one or two were directed
- 31:39Speaker 4: by Adam Bernstein.
- 31:40Speaker 1: Yeah, I can help you out because Joelle, our amazing producer,
- 31:43Speaker 1: made a note here that she said, I read this
- 31:45Speaker 1: was originally supposed to be episode two, this one.
- 31:48Speaker 4: It wasn't that as much as because we fixed that
- 31:51Speaker 4: in scripting stage. They wanted me to repilot and I
- 31:53Speaker 4: wrote episode two that you guys talked about. And then
- 31:56Speaker 4: Adam didn't want to go away for a week and
- 31:57Speaker 4: come back, so he was directing two episodes in a row.
- 32:05Speaker 4: I think we crossboarded even a little bit. I can't remember,
- 32:07Speaker 4: off to check. And then Mark Bucklin directed The Mild Lady.
- 32:11Speaker 4: After this, even though it was the third episode, we
- 32:13Speaker 4: were going to split them up, okay, because Adam was
- 32:15Speaker 4: it coming from New York and even though we were
- 32:17Speaker 4: going to go, you're going to direct the first episode.
- 32:20Speaker 4: In the third episode, he's like, yeah, I'm not flying
- 32:22Speaker 4: home and coming back. I'll do all the prep before
- 32:24Speaker 4: do him, you know, because he's a quirky character.
- 32:27Speaker 1: So then we slipped New York. Still this day, I've
- 32:30Speaker 1: tried to get him to come do with other things
- 32:32Speaker 1: in the years since, and he's like, I don't really
- 32:34Speaker 1: like to leave New York.
- 32:36Speaker 4: Donald smart because we did catch our stride with two things,
- 32:39Speaker 4: and I'll see if you guys that we used to
- 32:42Speaker 4: have this big wall of things that we were trying
- 32:44Speaker 4: to establish as motifs for the show, and this one
- 32:48Speaker 4: was we had a super long discussion. The reason we
- 32:51Speaker 4: did that runner about how important music was going to
- 32:53Speaker 4: be in this show. And so we're like, we're even
- 32:56Speaker 4: going to make a song travel around the show like
- 32:58Speaker 4: a virus, and you know that'll be the start of
- 33:02Speaker 4: how queuing people in that music isn't just background on
- 33:06Speaker 4: this show. It has huge importance. You know. The song
- 33:10Speaker 4: that we chose, I'm So in Love with You, you know,
- 33:13Speaker 4: just gonna be able to it was it was specifically
- 33:14Speaker 4: about what was going on in those scenes. It wasn't
- 33:17Speaker 4: just a viral song, and we were trying to train
- 33:20Speaker 4: people to go, oh, I'm supposed to listen to the
- 33:22Speaker 4: words of the song too, because they're about what we're
- 33:24Speaker 4: actually doing. And the second thing, which is why it
- 33:27Speaker 4: was important that Bernstein was there, was when we first
- 33:30Speaker 4: discussed that the camera is a character.
- 33:33Speaker 5: And it's the first time we did a cowboy switch.
- 33:36Speaker 4: When Zach's running to meet Elliott, that a stuntman dives
- 33:40Speaker 4: and takes a face plant and the camera doesn't just cut,
- 33:44Speaker 4: It goes around looking for him like it's like it's
- 33:47Speaker 4: an actual charity too, you know.
- 33:48Speaker 5: And then Zach puts up like this, Yeah.
- 33:51Speaker 4: So if there was a thought bubble, you could have
- 33:53Speaker 4: almost looped in the camera going where'd you go? And
- 33:57Speaker 4: and so those two things kind of set a creatative
- 34:00Speaker 4: course for the show in ways that you know, we
- 34:03Speaker 4: kind of ran with after this.
- 34:05Speaker 1: Yeah, I didn't remember this one so much. And then
- 34:07Speaker 1: as I was watching and I was going, wow, there
- 34:09Speaker 1: was there's a lot in this episode that are little
- 34:11Speaker 1: moments that stuck with me forever, like the friend zone
- 34:15Speaker 1: and and the timer and the creative timer clock thing.
- 34:19Speaker 1: Every time I see Sarah and and Donald, uh, you know,
- 34:23Speaker 1: There's a lot of things that were that were used
- 34:25Speaker 1: throughout the show too, that that are established here, Like
- 34:27Speaker 1: it's the first time we see Donald playing basketball, and
- 34:31Speaker 1: you look very good now and you look very fit.
- 34:33Speaker 2: I wish I could get back into that shape.
- 34:35Speaker 1: You can do so they eat too much shit.
- 34:38Speaker 2: Well, twenty six years old body compared to a forty
- 34:41Speaker 2: six year old body is a big, big, big, big difference. Man.
- 34:44Speaker 1: Well, I I really I took notice that you looked fire.
- 34:48Speaker 2: Well. I accept and receive that, and so did Rob.
- 34:52Speaker 5: Mashioh Rob Roy any of black hair? U?
- 35:00Speaker 4: I got to tell you, man.
- 35:01Speaker 5: So this is one of the things I get mocked for.
- 35:03Speaker 4: Why this episode stuck in my head was we all
- 35:07Speaker 4: have those things, like remember when you you share something
- 35:09Speaker 4: with friends that you wish you hadn't or or you're
- 35:13Speaker 4: drunk and you say something to it's a shiver story.
- 35:14Speaker 4: When you think back, you're like, oh.
- 35:16Speaker 1: Yes, Donald getting a nugge to Jef Zucker.
- 35:18Speaker 4: Yes, so one of mine. And in writer's rooms you
- 35:22Speaker 4: tell personal stories. Was in a fraternity? Really? I was
- 35:27Speaker 4: in a fraternity? Yeah no, I was?
- 35:29Speaker 2: And uh uh you were in a fraternity?
- 35:31Speaker 4: Yeah no, I swear Okay. In college, we were all
- 35:36Speaker 4: drinking and hanging out and I was a little buzzy,
- 35:40Speaker 4: and I had a hometown girlfriend, and you really think
- 35:45Speaker 4: you can go and you care that much about her,
- 35:47Speaker 4: and I said, and it haunted me for the rest
- 35:49Speaker 4: of the year. They tortured me. I said, dude, I
- 35:52Speaker 4: miss her so much it hurts sometimes. And that became
- 35:57Speaker 4: one of the memes from this show because the mental.
- 36:03Speaker 1: I gotta tell you of all the memes and and
- 36:05Speaker 1: anything I get, gifts I get sent I miss you
- 36:09Speaker 1: so much it hurts sometimes, is one of the most common.
- 36:12Speaker 4: And it's also, by the way, the core of how
- 36:19Speaker 4: to use you know. I said, Look, voiceover can be
- 36:22Speaker 4: a crutch comedically because it's so easy. And when I teach,
- 36:25Speaker 4: like the Writers Guild, they're like, what do you mean how,
- 36:27Speaker 4: I'm like, well, the easiest way is to state a
- 36:31Speaker 4: premise in your voiceover and then do the opposite. An
- 36:33Speaker 4: example is just tell Turk how you feel without sounding
- 36:37Speaker 4: like you know a girl for once. I miss you
- 36:39Speaker 4: so much it hurts sometimes, you know. Another one was
- 36:41Speaker 4: when Elliott had the voiceover, or is when Kelso spilled
- 36:46Speaker 4: stuff on his face. Whatever you do, do not say
- 36:49Speaker 4: the word splotchy, and I think, j D, I think
- 36:51Speaker 4: you just said good splotchy, doctor splotch instead of why
- 36:58Speaker 4: would you even say good splot that's not even a work.
- 37:01Speaker 1: Good splotsheet splotsheet anyways, all right, So I wanted to
- 37:05Speaker 1: say at forty nine seconds in is my first Muppet
- 37:08Speaker 1: exit that I ever did in the show Scrubs, which
- 37:12Speaker 1: which which I always thought of, was when I when
- 37:14Speaker 1: I would just turn my head. I always I always
- 37:16Speaker 1: laughed at how Kermit the Frog and all the Muppets
- 37:19Speaker 1: Sesame Street characters would always turn and then and then
- 37:21Speaker 1: walk out. Yeah, so I h when I when I
- 37:25Speaker 1: leave the viewing room here, I sort of do a
- 37:28Speaker 1: side turn and I just kind of laughed. I think
- 37:30Speaker 1: that was the first time I tried out my successful
- 37:32Speaker 1: Muppet exit.
- 37:34Speaker 2: You used also ever got yeah became.
- 37:36Speaker 1: Well it was it was a go to bill at
- 37:39Speaker 1: one eleven. There's an exterior shot of the hospital that
- 37:41Speaker 1: has never ever seen again, I don't think. And I
- 37:43Speaker 1: noticed that it says something about women's on the top
- 37:46Speaker 1: of it.
- 37:47Speaker 4: Yeah, I didn't.
- 37:47Speaker 5: I didn't paint it out.
- 37:49Speaker 1: We didn't have the budget at the time to be
- 37:51Speaker 1: painting or no to be painting things out. But it's
- 37:54Speaker 1: funny watching the early episodes, there's like, it looks like
- 37:56Speaker 1: you guys were it looks like someone was like, do
- 37:58Speaker 1: we have an exterior shot at the hospital? Nah? How
- 38:00Speaker 1: about that one? All right?
- 38:01Speaker 4: Well, we went and shot a bunch of stuff that
- 38:03Speaker 4: we used in the pilot, and then once we ran
- 38:06Speaker 4: out of that stuff, we just started shooting into our
- 38:08Speaker 4: own building.
- 38:09Speaker 1: Right. But this one was this This was not because
- 38:12Speaker 1: it says women's something at the top.
- 38:14Speaker 4: Yeah, No, it was particularly bad. There's a lot of
- 38:15Speaker 4: bad stuff in here, guys. You know.
- 38:18Speaker 5: I always get shipped.
- 38:18Speaker 4: For that because I'm always like you guys, remember my
- 38:21Speaker 4: favorite thing to say when we're so busy is I'll
- 38:24Speaker 4: take all I'll take all the mail on that, Okay,
- 38:27Speaker 4: So someone like an editor would come up and go,
- 38:29Speaker 4: that says women's Like when the letters come and there
- 38:32Speaker 4: are thousands of them are going to come.
- 38:34Speaker 5: Deer Scrubs used to be a huge fan.
- 38:36Speaker 4: But that hospital exterior said women's on it. You can
- 38:39Speaker 4: send all those letters to me, I'll take all the mail.
- 38:41Speaker 4: And it was such an arrogant, dicky thing to say,
- 38:44Speaker 4: but I just never got caught up.
- 38:45Speaker 2: No, but it's true because if they're looking at stuff
- 38:47Speaker 2: like that, they're not really watching the show, you know
- 38:48Speaker 2: what I mean.
- 38:49Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 38:49Speaker 1: Bill would always said that when when we were like,
- 38:51Speaker 1: when we were all holding up for something like you're
- 38:54Speaker 1: in the wrong you're wearing the wrong watch, Bill would
- 38:56Speaker 1: be like, guys, I'll take all the mail on the
- 38:59Speaker 1: wrong Watch's.
- 39:02Speaker 4: That? And then the neatest thing that you could say
- 39:04Speaker 4: is to say it to John Inwood all the time
- 39:05Speaker 4: was he would make you, guys wait while he went
- 39:07Speaker 4: and fixed a light, you know, way in the background,
- 39:10Speaker 4: to take you ten minutes.
- 39:11Speaker 5: And when he finally got back to camera, I was.
- 39:13Speaker 4: Go, Showsaver, sure.
- 39:18Speaker 5: You know we were in real.
- 39:19Speaker 4: Trouble and you fixed it with that light that's one
- 39:21Speaker 4: hundred yards in the background.
- 39:23Speaker 1: Yeah. Well, the man was passionate. He wanted to get
- 39:25Speaker 1: it just perfect, Zach.
- 39:26Speaker 4: That was also the episode was also not only your
- 39:29Speaker 4: first muppet exit. I wish I had a wider frame,
- 39:32Speaker 4: but the first time that when you got up from
- 39:33Speaker 4: following that you shook out your shoulders.
- 39:35Speaker 1: Oh really, I'm frozen in a frame. Here at two
- 39:40Speaker 1: minutes of me in a threesome fantasy with Sarah Chaw
- 39:44Speaker 1: and another beautiful model and we're all sweaty, And the
- 39:46Speaker 1: first thing that came in my head was, could you
- 39:48Speaker 1: even do that today on a half hour single camera
- 39:52Speaker 1: network comedy.
- 39:53Speaker 4: Not that cause it was pretty.
- 39:55Speaker 5: Uh suggestive and graphic risque.
- 39:58Speaker 2: Sure, that was so awesome, by the way, like holy count.
- 40:03Speaker 1: My job right right.
- 40:04Speaker 2: Well, first of all, it was so awesome because that's
- 40:07Speaker 2: everybody's fantasy to get married and for your wife to
- 40:10Speaker 2: be like, yeah, we could do this, it's going.
- 40:14Speaker 4: To be It's also one of it's one of the
- 40:15Speaker 4: best outtakes ever. Do you remember that one outtake where
- 40:17Speaker 4: Zach was like, yeah, keep kissing when the don't stop.
- 40:20Speaker 5: You remember that.
- 40:21Speaker 1: I remember something being like I was like, I know,
- 40:23Speaker 1: I think I was like keep rolling.
- 40:26Speaker 4: Yeah. Look, I've had this discussion a lot. There's tons
- 40:30Speaker 4: of things on our show you couldn't do now, correctly
- 40:34Speaker 4: or incorrectly, Like the Todd is an interesting one, oh
- 40:37Speaker 4: you know, And we used to say, like the Todd
- 40:41Speaker 4: started in a way.
- 40:42Speaker 5: I don't know if you remember.
- 40:43Speaker 4: It was always in a banana hammock because I said,
- 40:46Speaker 4: if we're gonna do a young man's fantasies and see
- 40:49Speaker 4: women's scantily clad. I think we have to see as much,
- 40:54Speaker 4: if not more, ridiculous male nudity, and so Todd would
- 40:57Speaker 4: just always be in a banana hammick end he was
- 41:00Speaker 4: representative of somebody intentionally so crass, are so ludicrous that
- 41:06Speaker 4: he's to be laughed at and not with. But unfortunately
- 41:10Speaker 4: I think he was laughed with a lot. Uh So
- 41:13Speaker 4: I don't know if you could do him now. The
- 41:14Speaker 4: one things I always get busted on or two storylines.
- 41:18Speaker 4: One is when the janitor turned JD into a racist,
- 41:21Speaker 4: and one is when I put Donald's picture on the
- 41:25Speaker 4: cover of his college magazine twice. Do you remember when
- 41:29Speaker 4: I said, like, your college was so happy to have
- 41:33Speaker 4: an accomplished, great black guy that you know in their
- 41:36Speaker 4: lily white school that on their brochure, your your pictures
- 41:40Speaker 4: there twice. Yeah, they photoshopped you in twice just to
- 41:45Speaker 4: look like a PC college. You know.
- 41:47Speaker 2: Well, I noticed that. I noticed that There are a
- 41:49Speaker 2: lot of things and this is just how how time
- 41:51Speaker 2: has gone. First, of all the shows about sexual harassment,
- 41:54Speaker 2: which is very uh being too dominant right now, one
- 42:00Speaker 2: of Hollywood's biggest movie makers is now in jail for
- 42:05Speaker 2: doing horrible horrible, horrible things, right, but we're touching things
- 42:09Speaker 2: like that that are kind of untouched, Like you can't
- 42:11Speaker 2: touch these things now, these things that we were doing
- 42:14Speaker 2: in the show back in the day, some of these things,
- 42:16Speaker 2: networks will be like no, no, no, no, no no, let's
- 42:18Speaker 2: stay away from that, Let's stay away.
- 42:19Speaker 4: Oh, they'd be so careful.
- 42:21Speaker 1: I think, as Bill said, for some for better, we've
- 42:24Speaker 1: evolved and we probably wouldn't make some of those jokes today,
- 42:26Speaker 1: and in some I wonder if, in this example, with
- 42:29Speaker 1: the sort of sexual sweaty threesome fantasy, I'm just surprised
- 42:33Speaker 1: Bill that you got it. I mean, I knew you
- 42:35Speaker 1: wanted to push the envelope of what the show could be.
- 42:37Speaker 1: I'm just I just wondered, like, even now in twenty twenty,
- 42:41Speaker 1: if in a primetime network comedy, if you could do
- 42:44Speaker 1: a sweaty sex threesome joke.
- 42:47Speaker 3: No.
- 42:47Speaker 4: Look, I want to answer two things. Because what Donald
- 42:50Speaker 4: was saying, you know, is interesting. We talked about it
- 42:53Speaker 4: a lot because I don't know if you remember in
- 42:55Speaker 4: this episode the resolve is that would have been a
- 43:00Speaker 4: completely different story if doctor Cox or younger male was
- 43:06Speaker 4: calling Sarah sweetheart and the boys sport, but we were
- 43:10Speaker 4: kind of anticipating something. We talked about it. Kelso was
- 43:13Speaker 4: of a different generation. He was older than all you guys.
- 43:16Speaker 4: He called you is definitely an old school dude. You
- 43:20Speaker 4: can never say these things are innocuous. But it was
- 43:22Speaker 4: a time in which at the end John c McGinley
- 43:26Speaker 4: talks to Sarah and goes, if you're going to get
- 43:29Speaker 4: mad about some quasi term of endearment, you know from
- 43:34Speaker 4: an old out of touch dude, you know your life
- 43:37Speaker 4: here is going to be a lot more complicated than
- 43:41Speaker 4: it has to be. And she took the lesson of
- 43:42Speaker 4: picking my battles, you know. So to Donald's answer, I
- 43:47Speaker 4: think it's a story you can maybe still do if
- 43:50Speaker 4: you're talking. Although we've now moved twenty years away from that.
- 43:53Speaker 4: At that time we were going like, hey, here's a
- 43:54Speaker 4: guy in his mid to late sixties. You know that
- 43:57Speaker 4: is without a doubt, of a generation. I got so
- 44:00Speaker 4: much trouble when he Kelso said to a male nurse,
- 44:04Speaker 4: you know, oh, you're wondering why you don't get respected,
- 44:06Speaker 4: It's because you're doing a woman's job. And our intent
- 44:11Speaker 4: was that Kelso is so out of touch that he
- 44:13Speaker 4: would say that, you know what I mean. And then
- 44:15Speaker 4: the complaints I got from Nurses Association, got letters and stuff, true,
- 44:20Speaker 4: were how could you have a character saying that when
- 44:23Speaker 4: it's such a problem that characters that people out there,
- 44:26Speaker 4: especially from that generation, believe that and say that. I'm like, right,
- 44:30Speaker 4: it's real. He's the bad guy on the show.
- 44:32Speaker 1: And there's a nursing shortage, so like, don't discourage people.
- 44:35Speaker 4: Yeah, he's the bad guy on the show. He has
- 44:37Speaker 4: those thoughts, and in a good way. I think Kelso
- 44:39Speaker 4: evolved and into Zach's question. It comes all under the
- 44:45Speaker 4: heading and it's not just with those two girls, which
- 44:48Speaker 4: was a joke and obviously a joke about some you know,
- 44:51Speaker 4: young male fantasy, but this is for both of you,
- 44:54Speaker 4: and for Sarah and for Judy.
- 44:56Speaker 5: When I said the show has to.
- 44:57Speaker 4: Be real, beyond the goofiness, what we thought about more
- 45:01Speaker 4: than jokes was about when we would have sex scenes,
- 45:04Speaker 4: you know, and it was really important to me, not
- 45:07Speaker 4: no ascibious way that they seemed. They didn't seem like
- 45:11Speaker 4: a TV sitcom kiss where everybody goes and some of
- 45:15Speaker 4: the romance scenes between Zach and Sarah and Donald and
- 45:19Speaker 4: Judy and even Johnny C and my wife, which still
- 45:22Speaker 4: turns my stomach a little bit because I had to
- 45:24Speaker 4: see it.
- 45:24Speaker 2: You did, you did?
- 45:27Speaker 1: I had to kiss Christa so early and I was
- 45:30Speaker 1: still in the terrified of Bill phase, and it was
- 45:34Speaker 1: an early episode I don't know what, probably five or something,
- 45:37Speaker 1: and I had to make out with Christa and I
- 45:40Speaker 1: remember being like, this is the craziest job. I'm about
- 45:42Speaker 1: to make out with my boss's wife for him.
- 45:47Speaker 4: I still have that on a loop at my house.
- 45:48Speaker 4: It's awesome hard soon No, Yeah, I mean he's super sexy.
- 45:53Speaker 5: I'm really grateful.
- 45:54Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, it is did you did?
- 46:00Speaker 4: You guys think you were doing fairly racy sex scenes.
- 46:03Speaker 2: The time.
- 46:06Speaker 1: Throughout the whole show. I mean, I can't that big
- 46:09Speaker 1: famous one that Sarah I did with the pizza. I
- 46:11Speaker 1: remember that being like, I can't believe they're gonna put
- 46:14Speaker 1: put this on TV. This is gonna be censored. And
- 46:16Speaker 1: all my stuff with Amy Smart, I remember being like,
- 46:18Speaker 1: they're gonna air this.
- 46:21Speaker 2: I was really excited about and not in that way,
- 46:24Speaker 2: but like when Judy and I would do scenes together,
- 46:27Speaker 2: I was it really felt like we were a couple
- 46:31Speaker 2: when watched when I watched it, you know what I mean,
- 46:33Speaker 2: because that's how I don't know that there was just
- 46:36Speaker 2: something that was really uh uh uh. She and I
- 46:41Speaker 2: had great chemistry, I feel like, and because of that,
- 46:44Speaker 2: and because of that, I uh you know when I
- 46:46Speaker 2: watched her stuff. That's that's what everybody hopes for when
- 46:50Speaker 2: they do romantic stuff, that the audience believes it. And
- 46:53Speaker 2: if the audience doesn't believe it, well hopefully I believe it,
- 46:56Speaker 2: you know what I mean?
- 46:57Speaker 5: And much I liked you guys.
- 46:59Speaker 4: I like you guys. There's no offense because I love
- 47:02Speaker 4: Zach and Sarah. But my favorite couple on the show,
- 47:04Speaker 4: Donald and Judy because as a writer's room in a
- 47:08Speaker 4: glassman the writer's room. One of the things we put
- 47:11Speaker 4: on those boards in the first couple of weeks was
- 47:14Speaker 4: we're gonna get Turk and Carla together and never break
- 47:18Speaker 4: them up and never threaten them. And you know, because
- 47:20Speaker 4: we're gonna do will there won't they with the other
- 47:22Speaker 4: characters and how cool is it to see a couple
- 47:24Speaker 4: that finds each other and works right? And the only
- 47:28Speaker 4: reason we ever even had you guys have a little
- 47:31Speaker 4: dip here there as a couple was because we never
- 47:33Speaker 4: expected the show to last nine years, and we had
- 47:36Speaker 4: to be like, we should probably throw a couple of
- 47:37Speaker 4: curve balls their way.
- 47:38Speaker 2: Man, looking back at it now, it's the it's perfect
- 47:44Speaker 2: as a young man doing you know who's on a
- 47:47Speaker 2: television show? Like I used to be like, and we're
- 47:50Speaker 2: gonna have Holly Berry on the show as my love interest,
- 47:52Speaker 2: and we and those things that never ever happened.
- 47:56Speaker 1: Were you bummed out? Not not that it was Judy
- 47:58Speaker 1: because she's a knockout, but were you my love I know,
- 48:00Speaker 1: but were you like where are all my love interests?
- 48:03Speaker 2: Yeah? Absolutely, man, But when you look back at the storytelling,
- 48:07Speaker 2: when you look back at at at the relationship that
- 48:10Speaker 2: those two have, Like I can't post pictures of my
- 48:12Speaker 2: wife and I because people are like, that's not Carlo.
- 48:15Speaker 1: Yeah, I get it. By the way, post pictures of
- 48:19Speaker 1: me hugging anyone because they're like, why aren't you hugging turk?
- 48:22Speaker 4: Right?
- 48:22Speaker 2: That's that's the other one that comes up. I'll be like,
- 48:25Speaker 2: here's a lovely picture of me and my family, and
- 48:27Speaker 2: I'd be like, that's not where's JD? Where's that graph? People?
- 48:30Speaker 4: People hit me all the time too with how and
- 48:32Speaker 4: we tried to do it. You and Judy react to
- 48:36Speaker 4: you know, TV is a world in which a wife
- 48:38Speaker 4: has her hands on her hips and is frustrated with
- 48:40Speaker 4: a husband or the husband's like, you know, you're crazy.
- 48:43Speaker 4: And even when we sent you guys in crazy stories.
- 48:45Speaker 4: One of my favorite scenes was in a later episode,
- 48:49Speaker 4: but when you guys find out Judy's pregnant before she does,
- 48:53Speaker 4: and you're gonna tell her and uh, everybody knows but her,
- 48:59Speaker 4: And know the cool thing about your characters is that
- 49:04Speaker 4: you when when it comes to a comedic peak and
- 49:06Speaker 4: we did this a lot, you admit fault and then she,
- 49:11Speaker 4: instead of punishing you for it, says, who gives a ship?
- 49:14Speaker 5: We're having a baby, you know what I mean. And
- 49:16Speaker 5: that's not often how real couples work. So it was
- 49:18Speaker 5: a couple to aspire.
- 49:19Speaker 2: To, right, I thought, Looking back at it now, I
- 49:22Speaker 2: love it, like just the even the courtship, even how
- 49:25Speaker 2: the show starts and how these guys start offs. You
- 49:28Speaker 2: know they're not together, but if you didn't watch the
- 49:31Speaker 2: show from the beginning, you would imagine that when the
- 49:34Speaker 2: show was introduced, these characters started off to you know
- 49:38Speaker 2: what I mean, Like you watch family Guy and you
- 49:40Speaker 2: and you say, okay, so Peter's married to and this
- 49:43Speaker 2: is his family and this is and you accept that
- 49:45Speaker 2: the whole way through. There's no need for an origin
- 49:47Speaker 2: story or anything like that. And that's how I feel
- 49:50Speaker 2: it is with Carla and Turk. There's no need for
- 49:52Speaker 2: an origin story. They're just a TV couple that works,
- 49:55Speaker 2: you know what I mean?
- 49:56Speaker 4: Yeah, I was looking. I was thinking about this because
- 50:00Speaker 4: is get taking it back to the episode, like the
- 50:03Speaker 4: way Zach was doing cool things and freezing frames. I
- 50:06Speaker 4: was trying to remember minutia for you guys, and the
- 50:08Speaker 4: only the Turk and Carla Manusha I remember was the
- 50:11Speaker 4: scene in which you two are going to hang out
- 50:14Speaker 4: and watch Fletch and then Donald leaves. It was very
- 50:19Speaker 4: subtle we had. It's one of those discussions you have
- 50:22Speaker 4: in the writer's room. It's like Donald's liked to watch
- 50:24Speaker 4: Fletch and Carla says, do you want to go hang
- 50:27Speaker 4: out in your room? We don't want just Carla to
- 50:30Speaker 4: go do you want to go? Fuck? Because that makes
- 50:33Speaker 4: her seem like a bimbo.
- 50:34Speaker 5: And we don't want Turk to just you know, be
- 50:37Speaker 5: like I'll drop JD in an instant.
- 50:40Speaker 4: So like the dumb things you argue about in writer's room,
- 50:43Speaker 4: you won't even notice unless you watch it again. Did
- 50:44Speaker 4: you see that Carlo was holding two beers? So like
- 50:48Speaker 4: when she goes to you go look at that gainst
- 50:50Speaker 4: she goes, you're watching Fletch. You know it's funny when
- 50:52Speaker 4: we do all the lines. She goes, hey, you want
- 50:54Speaker 4: to go hang out in your room? And she's got
- 50:56Speaker 4: so it's not the women in the writing staff. I
- 50:58Speaker 4: right wanted to make it. Oh, we're not just going
- 51:00Speaker 4: to go fuck. I mean we will eventually, but she's
- 51:02Speaker 4: got two beers. So it's like, do you want to
- 51:03Speaker 4: go out your room, we both have a beer, we'll
- 51:05Speaker 4: shoot the ship and then we'll hook up. And that
- 51:07Speaker 4: fine line I think people is me being a nerd.
- 51:10Speaker 4: I think people, even if they don't notice that it's
- 51:12Speaker 4: subtext that they if you do a ton of it,
- 51:15Speaker 4: they gradually notice that it's more than just physical. Right,
- 51:19Speaker 4: that scene also, Zach had and you can and I'll hand.
- 51:22Speaker 5: It back to you, but you had.
- 51:24Speaker 4: One of our other first arguments was we constantly fought
- 51:28Speaker 4: in the writer's room. I made huge mistakes as we
- 51:30Speaker 4: went along about things that should be a fantasy and shouldn't.
- 51:34Speaker 4: And this was one of the first arguments because when
- 51:38Speaker 4: Carlos's do you want to go.
- 51:39Speaker 5: Hang out in my room? We look to you and
- 51:41Speaker 5: when we.
- 51:41Speaker 4: Look back, the remote control is still hovering in the air. Yeah,
- 51:44Speaker 4: and it drops at It's very bugs bunny. And it
- 51:47Speaker 4: was not done as a fantasy, you know what I mean?
- 51:49Speaker 1: And you already did you always this early have the
- 51:51Speaker 1: sort of white flash to a fantasy always, I forget.
- 51:55Speaker 4: Yeah, we were, we were making the rules still, but
- 51:57Speaker 4: we hadn't done the sound effects because we were just
- 52:01Speaker 4: starting to obsess about the difference between fantasies and flashbacks.
- 52:04Speaker 1: Well, you know, one of the funniest things I think
- 52:06Speaker 1: in throughout nine years of Scrubs is that Bill was
- 52:10Speaker 1: always dancing around what is so broad that's that it's
- 52:15Speaker 1: a fantasy, or what could exist in this world? And
- 52:17Speaker 1: there's a There's two that come to mind as my
- 52:19Speaker 1: favorites that he put in the real world, but we're
- 52:22Speaker 1: probably supposed to be fantasies. One one is when when
- 52:26Speaker 1: Donald packs me into the bag, it was literally it
- 52:31Speaker 1: was literally the size of a fucking bowling bag. It
- 52:36Speaker 1: was a backpack, and I was like, and if you
- 52:39Speaker 1: remember my like arm and leg were sticking up like
- 52:41Speaker 1: my body would never fake.
- 52:43Speaker 4: I had a fake foot by your head and then
- 52:46Speaker 4: so when he scratched your nose, your foot went h.
- 52:49Speaker 1: That was real and in the real world. And the
- 52:51Speaker 1: other one is that the janitor builds a full size
- 52:53Speaker 1: house out of sand in the parking lot, and that
- 52:56Speaker 1: was in the real world.
- 52:57Speaker 2: That all right.
- 52:57Speaker 4: The sand castle is not my fault because the sand castle,
- 53:02Speaker 4: the gag, you know, it was written like it was
- 53:04Speaker 4: real in the script, and we thought it would be
- 53:07Speaker 4: a sand castle like the size of like you ever
- 53:09Speaker 4: see a kid's playhouse like outside, something you could actually build,
- 53:14Speaker 4: right and are when I showed up, I drove, I
- 53:17Speaker 4: tried to drive to my parking spot that morning, and
- 53:19Speaker 4: the parking lot was closed. I better gone uh oh
- 53:23Speaker 4: the corner and there was like a final tap, there
- 53:29Speaker 4: was a sand castle as big as my home. I'm like, oh, no,
- 53:33Speaker 4: well that's and we can't say it's a fantasy, because
- 53:35Speaker 4: I think he lived there. For most of the episode.
- 53:38Speaker 5: He kept yelling at people.
- 53:49Speaker 1: Those are the two that always stuck out of my
- 53:50Speaker 1: mind as one, and I'm sure as we go through
- 53:52Speaker 1: the series we'll find other ones. But I remember thinking like,
- 53:55Speaker 1: oh my god, that one in the bag was in
- 53:57Speaker 1: the sand castle.
- 53:59Speaker 4: Yeah, they're a mistake.
- 54:00Speaker 1: So listen to twenty five. We were talking about how
- 54:02Speaker 1: you phased out In this episode you went nuts with
- 54:06Speaker 1: sound effects and there's there's literally a horn noise when Johnny.
- 54:10Speaker 4: For fucking.
- 54:12Speaker 5: When you and Jad eventually.
- 54:14Speaker 1: Do Yeah, I mean this episode is this This might
- 54:19Speaker 1: have been your peak sound effects moment as you're figuring out.
- 54:21Speaker 2: Oh no, there's another one coming. I know there's another
- 54:23Speaker 2: one coming.
- 54:24Speaker 1: But this one has this one has the ear flick
- 54:27Speaker 1: noise and also pretty much like anytime Johnny c moved.
- 54:30Speaker 4: Just you guys did the trivia question of Jeff's you
- 54:36Speaker 4: know the Powers that Be And you know it's hard
- 54:38Speaker 4: to screen rough cuts of single camera shows because they
- 54:41Speaker 4: wouldn't hear the laughs of all their friends and Will
- 54:43Speaker 4: and Grace.
- 54:44Speaker 5: Is this funny? And I thought it was funny. I
- 54:47Speaker 5: hated those sound effects so much.
- 54:48Speaker 4: Did you guys do the trivia question of the one
- 54:50Speaker 4: sound effect that stayed all nine years?
- 54:52Speaker 2: It's got to be the wish to go away into fantasy?
- 54:56Speaker 4: Yeah, no wish to fantasies? Though, is not a sign
- 54:59Speaker 4: effect with an actor. There's an actor.
- 55:01Speaker 1: Oh oh, Todd high five?
- 55:02Speaker 4: Whoops, there you go, Todd's high five being amplified times
- 55:06Speaker 4: nine thousand.
- 55:07Speaker 5: I think it's I think that's the.
- 55:08Speaker 4: Sound of like a rubber matt being slapped on the ground,
- 55:13Speaker 4: you know, And we kept that one forever.
- 55:15Speaker 1: That's funny. They really hurt, by the way. I mean, John,
- 55:20Speaker 1: I'm not being a whimp. They genuinely hurt.
- 55:22Speaker 2: No one's calling you a wimp. But come on, he.
- 55:25Speaker 4: Still passes out five's, you know on the line to people.
- 55:27Speaker 1: I know you can. You can go on Cameo. By
- 55:29Speaker 1: the way, We'll give Rob a shout out. You can
- 55:31Speaker 1: go on Cameo and Rob Maschio will send you a
- 55:34Speaker 1: message and high five you virtually, and go hire Rob
- 55:38Speaker 1: to give your friends a virtual high five on came
- 55:43Speaker 1: I kind of want to get one for Donald.
- 55:46Speaker 2: I'll accept and receive it, thank you very much.
- 55:48Speaker 1: Three twenty six, The janitor says one of my favorite
- 55:51Speaker 1: lines of the first season. You see him unhappy.
- 55:53Speaker 2: I like that.
- 55:58Speaker 5: I had forgotten that he locked you outside.
- 56:00Speaker 1: And was talking about Neil for his second bill because
- 56:02Speaker 1: we told we shared with the with the listeners the
- 56:05Speaker 1: story about how you know he wasn't intended to be
- 56:08Speaker 1: in your mind as big a role as he was,
- 56:10Speaker 1: or and then and of course everyone always discusses that
- 56:13Speaker 1: he may have been a figment of my imagination if
- 56:15Speaker 1: if the show only went one season, But just talk
- 56:17Speaker 1: about Neil and how you kept expanding his part because
- 56:20Speaker 1: he was just so friggin funny.
- 56:22Speaker 2: I have a question, did he have to audition? Also,
- 56:24Speaker 2: that's the other question. He did not happen.
- 56:26Speaker 4: Here's what here's here's what happened is Neil does the
- 56:28Speaker 4: stand up bit when he's interviewed, because he's a really
- 56:32Speaker 4: good actor. I don't know if you guys have ever
- 56:33Speaker 4: seen him any of his dramatic stuff. In the middle,
- 56:35Speaker 4: he was so and he's so good. Yeah, and he
- 56:38Speaker 4: came in and read for John mcf doctor Cox and
- 56:43Speaker 4: he was really good. But literally there, because we were
- 56:45Speaker 4: old buddies, I'm like, you're going to be the janitor
- 56:47Speaker 4: and uh. And so when he talks about it, he's like,
- 56:50Speaker 4: so I really prepared and I came in and then
- 56:53Speaker 4: Bill's not gonna be the janet. And when Neil does
- 56:55Speaker 4: the bit, Neil's like, well, I still carry around like
- 56:58Speaker 4: a clipboard and a step mop, carry around a mop.
- 57:03Speaker 5: Well I get to wear one of those cool lab jumpsuit.
- 57:06Speaker 5: Gray jumpsuit.
- 57:08Speaker 1: Oh, he would get so mad. Neil would that it
- 57:10Speaker 1: wasn't a jumpsuit. He goes, it's a gray shirt and pants.
- 57:14Speaker 1: It's not a jumpsuit.
- 57:18Speaker 2: I'm sorry. I always thought that his character was like
- 57:21Speaker 2: the worst janitor in the world, But when you watch
- 57:23Speaker 2: the show, he's always working and he's always doing his job.
- 57:26Speaker 2: He was never lazy, you know what I mean.
- 57:28Speaker 5: He was drunk most of the time.
- 57:31Speaker 4: That was one of my favorite lines ever's have you
- 57:33Speaker 4: been drinking?
- 57:33Speaker 5: I'm not drunk? Na, So look JD, the real JD told.
- 57:41Speaker 4: Me often when he was talking about it, there would
- 57:43Speaker 4: always be somebody, as there is any group dynamic when
- 57:47Speaker 4: he was a resident, would just plague him. You know,
- 57:49Speaker 4: it wasn't always a janitor whatever. So I wanted to
- 57:51Speaker 4: come up with that character for you, and I thought
- 57:54Speaker 4: it would be a line here or there. But Neil
- 57:56Speaker 4: was so funny man and such a gift just to
- 58:00Speaker 4: have around. And he's you know me, whenever I take
- 58:03Speaker 4: someone's funny in their buddy, I put him or hurry
- 58:05Speaker 4: in as much as I possibly can, so he became
- 58:08Speaker 4: more and more of a character in ways I never thought.
- 58:12Speaker 4: And part of the joy for me of going back
- 58:14Speaker 4: and look at these episodes not only seeing moments like
- 58:17Speaker 4: that Zach that I know Neil made up. You know,
- 58:21Speaker 4: like even in this episode, you're screaming and the line
- 58:24Speaker 4: in the script is la la la, I can't hear you.
- 58:26Speaker 4: But then I kept it in because like, that's one
- 58:28Speaker 4: of the first times that I looked into editing.
- 58:29Speaker 5: And then there was Neil going, what you love who?
- 58:32Speaker 5: You know what I mean? They just playing around with you,
- 58:35Speaker 5: you know what I mean?
- 58:36Speaker 1: I remember the scenes with Neil would always be so
- 58:37Speaker 1: fun because you know, we'd all riffer around, but Neil
- 58:40Speaker 1: was the best at it, and and you just never
- 58:43Speaker 1: knew what he was going to say. And I just
- 58:45Speaker 1: remember I always knew I was gonna laugh extra hard
- 58:48Speaker 1: because he would just come up with the craziest shit ever.
- 58:53Speaker 4: I was randomly down the wormhole of getting ready to
- 58:55Speaker 4: talk to you. To you guy, by the way, the
- 58:57Speaker 4: end of my other sentence was one of the gifts
- 58:59Speaker 4: for me as I to show go on and evolved,
- 59:01Speaker 4: some stuff got worse as a writer, you know, like
- 59:04Speaker 4: when you say I torture myself when I got too
- 59:06Speaker 4: broad and stuff like that. But then some stuff got better,
- 59:09Speaker 4: characters got richer, and last night, randomly, I was watching
- 59:12Speaker 4: Neil interact with Donald, you know, I mean, I don't
- 59:14Speaker 4: know if you remember when he had a sock puppet.
- 59:16Speaker 4: He's like, he pretended to hit you with the days
- 59:20Speaker 4: and your dynamic with him was so funny as well.
- 59:24Speaker 4: You know, it was cool to see him start to
- 59:27Speaker 4: interact with other characters. But the wormhole I ended up
- 59:31Speaker 4: putting last night and everybody should go look for it.
- 59:34Speaker 4: There's a scene with Sam Lloyd who plays Ted, and
- 59:37Speaker 4: Zach and Neil and you guys are trying to help
- 59:40Speaker 4: Neil with a girlfriend. You know, he's trying to the
- 59:43Speaker 4: girl that played the ukulele Kate mccoucheoch. You're trying to
- 59:48Speaker 4: get him to go for it with her. And I
- 59:51Speaker 4: told Neil, I'm like, you got to make up something
- 59:53Speaker 4: of what you did with your girlfriend. And Neil, Zach,
- 59:56Speaker 4: we used your real reactions. He made up a monologue
- 59:59Speaker 4: about killing a dust for her. It's not in the script,
- 1:00:02Speaker 4: and I watched it last night. He goes, he starts
- 1:00:05Speaker 4: and he goes, he goes, look, you should give her
- 1:00:07Speaker 4: a present, like something personal, something you made. Like when
- 1:00:11Speaker 4: I first started dating lady, I gave her a duck
- 1:00:14Speaker 4: that I killed already already a weird premise, right, And
- 1:00:18Speaker 4: then he said, I know what you're asking. Wouldn't it
- 1:00:20Speaker 4: have been more personal to kill her in front of her?
- 1:00:23Speaker 4: And yes, it would have, which is also made up.
- 1:00:26Speaker 4: And then he goes, but the duck and I were
- 1:00:28Speaker 4: driving over and and he goes, he goes, maybe I
- 1:00:33Speaker 4: was having a bad day, maybe he was.
- 1:00:35Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 1:00:35Speaker 4: But next thing you know, we're pulled over on the
- 1:00:38Speaker 4: side of the road, shirts off, which meant.
- 1:00:40Speaker 5: The duck was wearing your shirt.
- 1:00:42Speaker 4: He goes, next thing you know, we're pulled over on
- 1:00:45Speaker 4: the side of the road, shirts off, you know, seeing
- 1:00:47Speaker 4: what's what? So Neil described a scene that he beat
- 1:00:50Speaker 4: a duck to down on the side of the freeway. Yes,
- 1:00:56Speaker 4: and I'm like, that's why that guy's in the show
- 1:00:58Speaker 4: so much.
- 1:00:59Speaker 5: Man.
- 1:00:59Speaker 4: I said, hey, come up with something that you did
- 1:01:01Speaker 4: for your girlfriend, And he's like, what he's probably looking
- 1:01:04Speaker 4: for is that I beat a duck to death for
- 1:01:08Speaker 4: her and then brought it over so she could cook it.
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: He would also just come up with the craziest ship
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: and to the point where in later episodes, in later
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: seasons Bill sometimes it would just say in the script,
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: it just and then Neil makes up something.
- 1:01:22Speaker 4: Yeah, Neil, please say something funny. It's late one script.
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: I guess it was late night in the writer's room, Bill,
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: and you're like, we're not gonna do that. Just put
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: Neil says something funny.
- 1:01:31Speaker 4: Yeah, dude, I wrote that in the script. At the
- 1:01:33Speaker 4: first time, I'm like, Neil, it's two in the morning,
- 1:01:35Speaker 4: just say something funny. And the next day he did.
- 1:01:39Speaker 4: You know, I liked it the most when I got
- 1:01:41Speaker 4: to see him with you guys or with Sarah actually
- 1:01:44Speaker 4: having a real moment, you know, because it was so
- 1:01:46Speaker 4: cool that he could actually deliver. You know.
- 1:01:49Speaker 2: That's the interesting thing as we you know, as a
- 1:01:51Speaker 2: show goes on, you start to see people's first one
- 1:01:55Speaker 2: on one scenes together. And so in this episode, John
- 1:01:59Speaker 2: c McGinley and Sarah have their first real one on
- 1:02:03Speaker 2: one scene where she's asking him for advice. And at
- 1:02:07Speaker 2: this point, we as an audios, as an audience member,
- 1:02:12Speaker 2: we think that JD and John c McGinley are the
- 1:02:14Speaker 2: only ones that you know, that's the only dad son relationship,
- 1:02:18Speaker 2: but he was actually a dad to all of us
- 1:02:20Speaker 2: in this show as far as you know what I mean.
- 1:02:22Speaker 2: And this was the first episode where we see Sarah
- 1:02:25Speaker 2: and him, uh and and actually him mess with Sarah
- 1:02:28Speaker 2: in a way that could have gotten her fired, you
- 1:02:33Speaker 2: know what I mean. I just thought that's I thought
- 1:02:35Speaker 2: that was very interesting because eventually you have to introduce everybody,
- 1:02:37Speaker 2: even though it took you know, a whole season for
- 1:02:40Speaker 2: everybody to meet the janitor, for the janitor to do
- 1:02:43Speaker 2: other scenes with, for Neil to do other scenes with
- 1:02:46Speaker 2: everyone other than Zach. It was just it's just interesting
- 1:02:49Speaker 2: because when the show starts off, it seems like the
- 1:02:51Speaker 2: bubble is so small, you know what I mean. And
- 1:02:54Speaker 2: it starts with j D's relationship with everybody, but then
- 1:02:58Speaker 2: as it goes on, the bubble just kept getting bigger
- 1:03:00Speaker 2: and bigger and bigger. It's a great metaphor, and by
- 1:03:02Speaker 2: the end of it, we're all in the same universe together.
- 1:03:05Speaker 2: And this is also the first episode where the hospital
- 1:03:08Speaker 2: gets really wacky all of a sudden, you know what
- 1:03:10Speaker 2: I mean, Like we weren't whacky before that. Before this,
- 1:03:13Speaker 2: we were you know, even though it's episode three, we started.
- 1:03:16Speaker 2: This is where we're starting to do things that later
- 1:03:18Speaker 2: on I think, you know, I love it when you
- 1:03:23Speaker 2: jump from episode one or two and you jump all
- 1:03:26Speaker 2: the way to episode you know, season three, episode five,
- 1:03:29Speaker 2: because the growth of the show is so different, you
- 1:03:31Speaker 2: know what I mean.
- 1:03:32Speaker 4: I think about it in terms of characters, Like, what's
- 1:03:35Speaker 4: one of the things that's hard for me to watch
- 1:03:38Speaker 4: about the early episodes is Ken Jenkins is such a
- 1:03:42Speaker 4: good actor, and he was the bad guy on this show,
- 1:03:46Speaker 4: and I had not yet realized how deliciously silly and
- 1:03:51Speaker 4: funny that guy could be. You know, that guy is
- 1:03:53Speaker 4: a comedy assassin. But he was so good at being
- 1:03:58Speaker 4: a guy that you just hated, you know what I mean,
- 1:04:00Speaker 4: And and we leaned into that, and he didn't have
- 1:04:02Speaker 4: any other levels. So it's so cool when he expands,
- 1:04:05Speaker 4: you know what I mean, to see that you know
- 1:04:07Speaker 4: that he's silly and funny, that Johnny c can be
- 1:04:10Speaker 4: kind here or there, that Donald and the janitor can
- 1:04:14Speaker 4: go back and forth at each other but be on
- 1:04:15Speaker 4: different playing fields because Donald's not threatened. I mean, it's
- 1:04:19Speaker 4: it's weird to see you guys all at the beginning
- 1:04:21Speaker 4: because I did like the rich characters that you all
- 1:04:23Speaker 4: became very much.
- 1:04:24Speaker 2: You know, I love it.
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: Bill. We take a caller here on our show, and
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: it looks like, by the.
- 1:04:37Speaker 4: Way, I just thought it was a super villain because
- 1:04:39Speaker 4: it is us a as a gentleman. That is.
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: For you guys listening at home. His picture came up
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: on zoom and he's petting a cat, like like the
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: evil genius.
- 1:04:54Speaker 4: You all are enjoying talking about your show. Well, I
- 1:04:56Speaker 4: have bad news.
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: That's all right, Well, go ahead and introduce him.
- 1:05:01Speaker 2: Yes, Hi, Mike, thanks so much for joining us.
- 1:05:04Speaker 4: Hi everyone, how are you? Can you hear me?
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: Yes?
- 1:05:07Speaker 2: We can you just fine, Martin.
- 1:05:09Speaker 6: It's my first ever zoom meeting. I've never done this.
- 1:05:11Speaker 6: I'm glad it's working.
- 1:05:12Speaker 2: I'm glad you're here.
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: Well, Mark, you picked a good episode, uh to beyond
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: because you have the creator of the whole show, Bill Lawrence.
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: So if you have a question for any of us,
- 1:05:22Speaker 1: go ahead.
- 1:05:23Speaker 4: Oh well, hello Bill Lawrence, and hello all of you.
- 1:05:25Speaker 5: That's awesome. I'm so glad.
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: To be Where do you live, by the way, I
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: live in Chicago.
- 1:05:30Speaker 6: I'm on the northwest side Chicago, up in Avondale, Old
- 1:05:34Speaker 6: Irving Park area.
- 1:05:35Speaker 2: Shotaw, stand up, we.
- 1:05:37Speaker 4: Were just talking about Neil Flynn.
- 1:05:38Speaker 5: That's where that's the area of the world that he
- 1:05:39Speaker 5: is from.
- 1:05:40Speaker 2: My friend really Oh, but not your specific area. But
- 1:05:44Speaker 2: he's from Chicago. No, but he was like downstairs right now,
- 1:05:47Speaker 2: right now?
- 1:05:47Speaker 4: No no, no, no, I mean he could be all right,
- 1:05:49Speaker 4: go ahead, Mark, all right.
- 1:05:51Speaker 6: Even from the earliest episodes, Scrubs wasn't afraid to raise
- 1:05:54Speaker 6: social issues and took a clear stance that I thought
- 1:05:57Speaker 6: prioritized like well being of people over the economics and
- 1:06:01Speaker 6: insurance bureaucracy. I felt like this helped a lot of
- 1:06:04Speaker 6: young people, myself included, start thinking about the human side
- 1:06:07Speaker 6: of healthcare and healthcare like as a human right for
- 1:06:09Speaker 6: the first time, and sort of some of those more
- 1:06:11Speaker 6: serious issues. So I was just wondering if you guys
- 1:06:14Speaker 6: recalled any specific moments from production episodes or moments on
- 1:06:17Speaker 6: set that might have changed your influence the way you
- 1:06:20Speaker 6: guys have you the sort of work done by your characters,
- 1:06:23Speaker 6: or just sort of the healthcare system as a whole.
- 1:06:26Speaker 4: Wow, that's Donald and Zach answer this for the show.
- 1:06:30Speaker 4: I will tell you I've been thinking about this a
- 1:06:33Speaker 4: lot lately. Mark because the real JD and my pal
- 1:06:38Speaker 4: we were both kind of screw ups with a lot
- 1:06:40Speaker 4: with very little direction as young guys. And I remember
- 1:06:43Speaker 4: asking him what the hell he was doing going back
- 1:06:45Speaker 4: to pre med, and he talked about wanting to be
- 1:06:48Speaker 4: of service, you know, and his viewpoint right now.
- 1:06:52Speaker 5: You know, not to make this two poignant.
- 1:06:55Speaker 4: I FaceTime with him every night when he gets off
- 1:06:57Speaker 4: work because he's run of the COVID command centers on
- 1:07:00Speaker 4: the whole ICU for this hospitals we spoke about, and
- 1:07:02Speaker 4: it helps him decompress and not take that stuff into
- 1:07:05Speaker 4: his family. And he as a caregiver cares so much
- 1:07:09Speaker 4: more about the humanistic side than any of this other bullshit.
- 1:07:14Speaker 4: And he instilled that upon me, and he said we
- 1:07:16Speaker 4: could steal all of his stories, but we could never
- 1:07:20Speaker 4: have a callousness. He said, he was only interested in
- 1:07:23Speaker 4: me stealing his stories in his life and his name
- 1:07:27Speaker 4: if The undercurrent of the show was that it was
- 1:07:31Speaker 4: about a bunch of people flaws and all that cared
- 1:07:34Speaker 4: most about helping and taking care of other people. So
- 1:07:37Speaker 4: that was part of the series. And I'll weave the
- 1:07:39Speaker 4: rest to Donald and Zach. That's cool that you asked
- 1:07:42Speaker 4: that because I think about him every day. He's out
- 1:07:44Speaker 4: there doing stuff much.
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: More important, of course, And and and it's the perfect
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: question for this era, Mark because these these these medical
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: professionals and everyone who's working in the industry, whether you're
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: a doctor, a nurse, or a janitor, a medic, everyone
- 1:07:59Speaker 1: who in this environment is as the world is finally
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: seeing in the spotlight how heroic these people are. And
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: I think I always felt when we were making the
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: show that Bill was really shining a light on how
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: dedicated these folks were and how they had to deal
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: with life and death every single day. One thing that
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: really stood out for me when you asked your question
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: was the I remember learning that the nurses really run
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: the show. I hadn't spent much time in a hospital
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: when we started making Scrubs, and I learned that the
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: doctors can't do it without the nurses, and the nurses
- 1:08:37Speaker 1: are the ones who are on the front lines, and
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: the doctors have to be rotating, and they can't do
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: anything without the help of amazing nurses. It wasn't until
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: I spent more time in hospitals with both my father
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: and my sister getting sick, that I really this was
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: after Scrubs, but I remember being like, wow, this is
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: everything we were doing is so real. I'm witnessing it
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: on the front lines that we see that doctor like
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: every now and then, But man, these nurses and when
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: we have a good one, it is such a difference,
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: and me puts a smile on my sick father's face,
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: and when we have one that's a little bit aloof
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: it just drives you crazy. And I just really it
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: really came home to me everything we have been doing
- 1:09:15Speaker 1: on the show, how crucial and how important the people
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: on the front lines, particularly in this anecdote I'm telling
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: the nursing staff of hospitals were to me.
- 1:09:23Speaker 2: The one thing that really sticks out for me is
- 1:09:25Speaker 2: to piggyback on what Bill said, is you know, for
- 1:09:30Speaker 2: some hospitals, if you don't have insurance, you can't get treated.
- 1:09:34Speaker 2: And the one thing that Scrubs did which I thought
- 1:09:37Speaker 2: was amazing was we had a bunch of the doctors
- 1:09:40Speaker 2: on the show were a bunch of rule breakers, benders,
- 1:09:43Speaker 2: especially when it came to something like that, you know
- 1:09:45Speaker 2: what I mean. That was always special for me because
- 1:09:49Speaker 2: you know, a lot of people don't have great insurance,
- 1:09:53Speaker 2: especially right now a lot of people.
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: Don't have it and or any insurance at all.
- 1:09:58Speaker 2: And Test Church at all, thank you, Zach. And Test
- 1:10:01Speaker 2: costs a lot of money, you know what I mean.
- 1:10:04Speaker 2: And if there are rule breakers and rule benders out
- 1:10:06Speaker 2: there that can save lives in that way, I'm all
- 1:10:11Speaker 2: for that, you know what I mean. And I love
- 1:10:12Speaker 2: that we had people on the show, like doctor Cox.
- 1:10:15Speaker 2: When Kelso's trying to get this person out of the hospital,
- 1:10:18Speaker 2: Cox comes up with so many different ways to get
- 1:10:21Speaker 2: this guy a bed, and I thought that was just amazing.
- 1:10:24Speaker 4: Hey, Mark, we obsessed so much about your question. All
- 1:10:28Speaker 4: in terms of the character doctor Kelso. There's an episode
- 1:10:32Speaker 4: you guys might remember.
- 1:10:33Speaker 5: I remember the song.
- 1:10:34Speaker 4: And the scenes that because the real JD he runs
- 1:10:38Speaker 4: a hospital now and he's like and you're forced with
- 1:10:40Speaker 4: having to make these decisions for the greater good. And
- 1:10:42Speaker 4: there's an episode in which doctor Kelso you know, has
- 1:10:45Speaker 4: to punt a guy you know, from treatment that they've
- 1:10:50Speaker 4: done avasurance to have money in an effort to still
- 1:10:52Speaker 4: build other stuff and to have money to save other people.
- 1:10:56Speaker 5: And we made this joke about.
- 1:10:58Speaker 4: How every time doctor Kelson's foot hits the bottom of
- 1:11:01Speaker 4: the stairs when he leaves the hospital, he starts whistling
- 1:11:04Speaker 4: as if the day doesn't even affect him.
- 1:11:06Speaker 5: And at the end of that episode, even he because he.
- 1:11:09Speaker 4: Knew he was directly responsible for his guy not getting care,
- 1:11:12Speaker 4: his foot hits and he has a moment you can
- 1:11:14Speaker 4: see it's really hard for him to start whistling again.
- 1:11:16Speaker 4: As a citizen Cope song called Sideways playing, and so
- 1:11:21Speaker 4: we just wanted to make sure that the people weren't
- 1:11:23Speaker 4: the villains and that the system was So yeah, I'm
- 1:11:25Speaker 4: really grateful that you noticed that and asked about it.
- 1:11:27Speaker 2: Awesome.
- 1:11:28Speaker 6: Thank you guys for giving such detailed, great responses.
- 1:11:31Speaker 4: Sure, I think it just speaks to how much you.
- 1:11:33Speaker 2: Guys feel for the show and put into the show.
- 1:11:36Speaker 6: It really comes across, and I think that's why I've
- 1:11:37Speaker 6: been such a big fan for so long.
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: So thank you, Thank you, Mark, Thanks so much for
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: asking your question.
- 1:11:42Speaker 2: Do you want to ask another question? Oh? Sure, all right,
- 1:11:45Speaker 2: you get one more? All right?
- 1:11:48Speaker 6: So, this episode, episode three, and the show as a whole,
- 1:11:52Speaker 6: I think has a lot of moments that exemplify really healthy,
- 1:11:56Speaker 6: often sensitive male relationships.
- 1:12:00Speaker 4: Your guys's Turk and JD and JD and doctor.
- 1:12:03Speaker 6: Cox and other ones, and I was just wondering if
- 1:12:05Speaker 6: you guys could maybe talk a little bit about what
- 1:12:07Speaker 6: was important to you guys to have positive sort of
- 1:12:10Speaker 6: emotional moments between rose.
- 1:12:13Speaker 4: And how that might have affected your real life.
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: I think that's a great question. I'm glad you asked
- 1:12:18Speaker 1: it with Bill on the show, because for me, I
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: really felt in a positive way. Granted we joked about
- 1:12:24Speaker 1: it a lot, but I thought in a positive way
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: we were showing, you know, when we were growing up.
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: I mean when Donald, Bill's a smidge and older than us,
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: but when Donald and I were growing up, you know,
- 1:12:33Speaker 1: anything you did that was a motive towards the guy
- 1:12:37Speaker 1: you were called gay and it was derogatory and it
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: was negative, and it was just an adjective in high
- 1:12:42Speaker 1: school and junior high, in middle school and everything was
- 1:12:44Speaker 1: And I always as someone who was it's no surprise
- 1:12:48Speaker 1: I'm similar in a lot of ways to JD. I
- 1:12:51Speaker 1: always felt like, but this is who I am. I
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: am a guy who is a hugger and who's emotional
- 1:12:57Speaker 1: and where's his hardness sleeve and loves musicals who happens
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: to be a heterosexual. And I felt like Bill wrote
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: a character a friendship that was like, well, we're gonna
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: show that that's okay to men in a way, because
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: I've noticed it in my life, you know, the fact
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: that Donald and I would hug and stuff. You know,
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: I did a Broadway show and Scrubs fans would come
- 1:13:17Speaker 1: to the to the stage door and they'd be like, JD,
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: can I have a hug? And I would always kind
- 1:13:21Speaker 1: of laugh. It was almost like the show was giving
- 1:13:24Speaker 1: a certain community of men telling them that it was
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: okay to You're not gonna no matter what your sexuality is,
- 1:13:31Speaker 1: who cares, It's not gonna be threatened by being like JD,
- 1:13:34Speaker 1: just being who you truly are. And I always thought
- 1:13:38Speaker 1: that that was a really positive thing that Bill put
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: out there.
- 1:13:42Speaker 2: Yeah, I love that. I love the fact that the
- 1:13:44Speaker 2: two of them were so comfortable around each other that
- 1:13:47Speaker 2: they could be like brothers and lie in the same
- 1:13:49Speaker 2: bed in their underwear and it not be a thing
- 1:13:53Speaker 2: for them, you know what I mean. I like that,
- 1:13:56Speaker 2: And I think that storyline definitely transferred into my real
- 1:14:00Speaker 2: life with Zach, you know what I mean, Like, I
- 1:14:03Speaker 2: feel like my comfortability about being around other men and
- 1:14:10Speaker 2: not being afraid to be who I am and accept
- 1:14:14Speaker 2: who they are is all because of Scrubs, you know
- 1:14:17Speaker 2: what I mean. I've played best friends in other projects,
- 1:14:22Speaker 2: and you know, you play the tough guy, et cetera,
- 1:14:25Speaker 2: et cetera. But with these guys, none of that stuff mattered.
- 1:14:28Speaker 2: What mattered was that they loved each other at the
- 1:14:30Speaker 2: end of the day. And I cherished the fact that
- 1:14:33Speaker 2: I can have friendships with men and I can say
- 1:14:36Speaker 2: to them I love you and it not be looked
- 1:14:39Speaker 2: at as a bad thing.
- 1:14:41Speaker 4: It's a weird topic for me because you know, JD
- 1:14:45Speaker 4: was based on real JD. Donald's based on doctor. But
- 1:14:48Speaker 4: the truth is with these two characters. Anyways, I always
- 1:14:51Speaker 4: joked around that I was kind of wrestling with both
- 1:14:53Speaker 4: sides of myself because.
- 1:14:56Speaker 5: I am I played sports and was the high.
- 1:15:00Speaker 4: School jockey type guy that I was afraid of this stuff.
- 1:15:04Speaker 5: And on the other side, I do Zach and I
- 1:15:06Speaker 5: share a love of Broadway.
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: Musicals, Robin French, Gobil.
- 1:15:11Speaker 4: Ndtude.
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: All right, whatever, and uh you take the watch. That's
- 1:15:20Speaker 1: a digression. Well in later episodes, Okay, Uh.
- 1:15:24Speaker 4: True, I was always wrestling as a young man with
- 1:15:28Speaker 4: you know which which lane I fit in, and wishing
- 1:15:32Speaker 4: that it would be easier just to not have to
- 1:15:35Speaker 4: pick a lane. And then these guys, look, the truth is,
- 1:15:39Speaker 4: whenever you create a relationship as a writer, it's yours
- 1:15:42Speaker 4: for a second. And then the actors, if they're great,
- 1:15:45Speaker 4: they wrestle ownership from you. And what starts out is
- 1:15:49Speaker 4: eighty twenty years. You know, quickly in this show became
- 1:15:53Speaker 4: fifty to fifty mine and theirs, and then became all
- 1:15:56Speaker 4: theirs in a way that I would write moments that
- 1:15:59Speaker 4: weren't supposed to be romance moments, you know, like whether
- 1:16:03Speaker 4: it was them wanting to hug each other, you know,
- 1:16:05Speaker 4: at the end, and then when I look in the dailies,
- 1:16:07Speaker 4: they're rubbing their faces and heads against.
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: Me, Like that's my favorite gift. Is my favorite gift,
- 1:16:17Speaker 1: and use it all the time.
- 1:16:19Speaker 2: Whatever.
- 1:16:20Speaker 1: People are always like you using gifts of yourself. I'm like, yeah,
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: that one I do.
- 1:16:25Speaker 2: Because it really looks like we're trying to smell each other, dude,
- 1:16:28Speaker 2: really looks like.
- 1:16:29Speaker 4: By the way I think one of you had lived
- 1:16:30Speaker 4: in that you smell like an athlete and in a
- 1:16:33Speaker 4: way that you're just so happy. So my point is
- 1:16:37Speaker 4: I was doing it as an intellectual exercise, and these
- 1:16:40Speaker 4: guys made it something more and it's all about their
- 1:16:42Speaker 4: You get lucky on a TV show when what you're
- 1:16:45Speaker 4: watching feels even more real because the undercurrent of it
- 1:16:48Speaker 4: their intense friendship Israel.
- 1:16:51Speaker 2: You know. I also like that when we meet people nowadays,
- 1:16:55Speaker 2: they're so eager to talk about their best friend and
- 1:16:58Speaker 2: how much they love their best friend, you know what
- 1:17:00Speaker 2: I mean, and that that that makes me feel great.
- 1:17:02Speaker 2: You know, he's the brown bear to my vanilla bear,
- 1:17:05Speaker 2: or you know what I mean.
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: I honestly think it gave us a certain community of
- 1:17:11Speaker 1: men who watched the show and we're open to it,
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: a sort of permission to to to be more true
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: to who they were.
- 1:17:18Speaker 4: A mark if you want to, if you want to
- 1:17:19Speaker 4: indulge my version of googling my own name is all
- 1:17:22Speaker 4: occasionally go looking at all these wedding videos where the
- 1:17:25Speaker 4: best man sings guy love to the groom.
- 1:17:28Speaker 5: They're fantastic. There's like a thousand of them out there,
- 1:17:31Speaker 5: and it always starts with a fake setup.
- 1:17:33Speaker 4: He's like, you know, I was trying to think of
- 1:17:34Speaker 4: what to toast and what to blah blah, and I
- 1:17:36Speaker 4: thought it's probably better to do win song.
- 1:17:38Speaker 5: There the facts and then the groom.
- 1:17:40Speaker 4: The groom always stands up with a microphone too, because
- 1:17:43Speaker 4: they've rehearsed it twenty times. And I'm at home by myself,
- 1:17:46Speaker 4: just going.
- 1:17:46Speaker 2: Like this, lauding. I love it.
- 1:17:50Speaker 1: All right, Mark, thank you for two awesome questions.
- 1:17:53Speaker 5: Thanks for having me that great?
- 1:17:55Speaker 4: All right, stay says meeting your Mark. Hey, stay safe, buddy,
- 1:17:57Speaker 4: he can be healthy, Bill.
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: Why does nurse Roberts have so many bowling shoes for sale?
- 1:18:07Speaker 4: Look, one of the things that we embraced on Scrubs
- 1:18:10Speaker 4: early on was surreal jokes just for us, okay, And
- 1:18:15Speaker 4: we were trying to think, I remember this, and we
- 1:18:17Speaker 4: wanted this to be a runner, and we dropped it.
- 1:18:19Speaker 4: We shouldn't have dropped it, but you know, you get
- 1:18:21Speaker 4: too busy. When you were fantasizing about talking to Turk,
- 1:18:25Speaker 4: we started going down patho going What he doesn't realize
- 1:18:28Speaker 4: is he's in a topic with Nurse Roberts and she's
- 1:18:31Speaker 4: got a side hustle. And we were like, what's her
- 1:18:33Speaker 4: side hustle? It's selling her dead husband's bowling shoes. But
- 1:18:38Speaker 4: he didn't even bowl. She's just got like twenty pairs
- 1:18:41Speaker 4: of bowling shoes. She tries to unload to people.
- 1:18:45Speaker 1: I thought that was I thought that was so funny,
- 1:18:47Speaker 1: and I forgot that joke, and then that when Donald
- 1:18:50Speaker 1: showed up wearing them, I just laughed out loud. I
- 1:18:52Speaker 1: thought that was so funny, and roberts and then I thought,
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: I gotta ask Bill just the logic behind it? What
- 1:18:59Speaker 1: is Nurse rob Why is Nurse Robert's side hustle selling
- 1:19:02Speaker 1: her husband's bull shoes?
- 1:19:04Speaker 4: She's just always looking to get a step ahead, man.
- 1:19:06Speaker 4: The I just love that joke because the same way
- 1:19:10Speaker 4: I told you that Neil's joke meant that he and
- 1:19:14Speaker 4: the duck were both wearing shirts, even though that wasn't
- 1:19:17Speaker 4: said aloud, that joke means that while you were fantasizing.
- 1:19:20Speaker 5: About turk apropos of nothing, Nurse.
- 1:19:23Speaker 4: Robert said, Hey, is there any chance you ever to
- 1:19:25Speaker 4: be interested in buying some used bowling shoes? Is that
- 1:19:30Speaker 4: something that you would want? Because then you snap out
- 1:19:32Speaker 4: of it, You're like, I do.
- 1:19:33Speaker 5: I would really want that.
- 1:19:34Speaker 1: Ye, when I come out of the when I come
- 1:19:35Speaker 1: out of the phantasy, she says something like, so the
- 1:19:37Speaker 1: check's in your locker or something.
- 1:19:40Speaker 2: No, because I got them in my locker.
- 1:19:42Speaker 1: Oh yeah, you want to write me check.
- 1:19:43Speaker 2: You want to write me a check because I got
- 1:19:44Speaker 2: them in my locker.
- 1:19:47Speaker 1: So I picture her locker is just stacked bullings is
- 1:19:52Speaker 1: every couple of days she saw someone a pair of
- 1:19:54Speaker 1: bowling shoes.
- 1:19:55Speaker 4: It's just a little side hustle.
- 1:19:56Speaker 1: Bill touched on this at nineteen thirty seven. There's the
- 1:19:59Speaker 1: very first thing we did a lot with stunts on
- 1:20:03Speaker 1: scrubs called the Cowboy Switch. And just if you go
- 1:20:06Speaker 1: back and watch it, what happens is the camera never cuts,
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: but I'm running down the hall, and then the camera
- 1:20:11Speaker 1: without cutting, goes behind a cart, which switches to the stuntman,
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: who then goes and does a really hard fall on
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: the ground. The camera can't find me and comes back
- 1:20:21Speaker 1: and like a magic trick, I've switched back to where
- 1:20:23Speaker 1: I was. This is a really clever thing that we
- 1:20:26Speaker 1: used to do a bunch of times on the show.
- 1:20:28Speaker 1: In order to do a really harder fall that needed
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: to be a stuntman. And I wonder, Bill, is that
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: something Adam brought, or something a stuntman brought or you
- 1:20:35Speaker 1: knew about? How how did those start coming into the show.
- 1:20:38Speaker 4: Adam pitched very hard the thing we already spoke about
- 1:20:42Speaker 4: is on this show the camera is a character because
- 1:20:45Speaker 4: it's almost an extension of JD's head. You know, he's
- 1:20:48Speaker 4: narrating for this camera that doesn't exist. So that was Adam.
- 1:20:52Speaker 4: It's why he directed it. I remember him even saying
- 1:20:56Speaker 4: just so you know, I think he shot one without it,
- 1:20:58Speaker 4: but he's like, just so you know, when we do
- 1:21:01Speaker 4: the cowboy switch to buy time, the cameras is going
- 1:21:04Speaker 4: to look around for jad and I remember going, like
- 1:21:07Speaker 4: what it's like, it's gonna go like that, it's gonna
- 1:21:09Speaker 4: try and find it's gonna try and find its owner.
- 1:21:11Speaker 4: It's like a dog when you disappear, you know what
- 1:21:13Speaker 4: I mean. And so that was Adam and that dude.
- 1:21:17Speaker 4: Noon was all about the cowboy switches because he and
- 1:21:21Speaker 4: Ernie the two stunt men always but it's our favorite
- 1:21:23Speaker 4: Joke's at Ernie a great stuntman, but it's like, always
- 1:21:27Speaker 4: be wary of a stuntman who no longer has any
- 1:21:30Speaker 4: of his own teeth or hair. He had a big set.
- 1:21:32Speaker 4: He had a big set of a great white teeth
- 1:21:34Speaker 4: and like, what happened to your real teeth? So yeah,
- 1:21:36Speaker 4: the end is they said the stunts on this show
- 1:21:40Speaker 4: you want this stuff to all look real and not silly.
- 1:21:42Speaker 4: Let's have our thespians and you guys both did some
- 1:21:44Speaker 4: do them as much as we can, whether it's driving
- 1:21:46Speaker 4: a scooter into the water or sliding under the cart
- 1:21:50Speaker 4: or cowboy switches, and it helped sell the reality of
- 1:21:53Speaker 4: that clumsiness.
- 1:21:53Speaker 5: So I thought it was awesome.
- 1:21:54Speaker 1: And when we get to the Wizard of Oz episode,
- 1:21:56Speaker 1: there's the most epic cowboy switch that we'll talk about
- 1:21:59Speaker 1: where the scooter goes in to the puddle, but stay
- 1:22:01Speaker 1: tuned for that. The friend Zone bill that is one
- 1:22:05Speaker 1: of the funniest articulations of the friend Zone. I noticed
- 1:22:07Speaker 1: this time that everything everybody's dressed in beige.
- 1:22:12Speaker 2: That's my first favorite. That's my first favorite and one
- 1:22:16Speaker 2: of my all time favorite fantasies ever. And it just
- 1:22:21Speaker 2: was It's such a smart, smart way to describe the.
- 1:22:24Speaker 4: First I would have done that fantasy in a world
- 1:22:28Speaker 4: of streaming where you don't have time limits for ten minutes,
- 1:22:30Speaker 4: I would have wanted to hear where everybody crossed paths
- 1:22:32Speaker 4: with her. I loved my favorite was it even Becky
- 1:22:36Speaker 4: being in there. My favorite was the guy we worked
- 1:22:38Speaker 4: together at Penguins because in my head, I'm like that guy.
- 1:22:42Speaker 4: That guy and Elliott barely had shifts together. They just
- 1:22:45Speaker 4: occasionally overlapped penguins yogurt, and he was just like your shift.
- 1:22:51Speaker 1: I just love the cleverness of in Elliott's mind. None
- 1:22:55Speaker 1: of those people stood out so that everybody's dressed in
- 1:22:58Speaker 1: a shade of beige.
- 1:22:59Speaker 4: Yeah, they're all blending in. They're all just people that
- 1:23:03Speaker 4: drifted through her life. You know.
- 1:23:05Speaker 1: The last thing, I don't know if Donald, do you
- 1:23:07Speaker 1: have anything else? But the last thing from the show
- 1:23:09Speaker 1: that I wrote down that I thought was really funny. I
- 1:23:11Speaker 1: don't know if we ever did it again, is that
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: you're using Rowdy's mouth to open up the pie.
- 1:23:15Speaker 2: That was That was the last thing I had to
- 1:23:17Speaker 2: I was gonna ask you.
- 1:23:18Speaker 4: I thought Rowdy. I thought Rowdy should have always it
- 1:23:21Speaker 4: should have always been a bottle opener. But I think
- 1:23:23Speaker 4: that's the first time we introduced your dead dog without
- 1:23:26Speaker 4: I don't think we had any lines referencing it.
- 1:23:28Speaker 5: Did we?
- 1:23:28Speaker 4: No?
- 1:23:29Speaker 1: No?
- 1:23:29Speaker 2: No?
- 1:23:30Speaker 1: Oh?
- 1:23:30Speaker 4: You mean was he an episode two?
- 1:23:32Speaker 1: Yeah? He is an episode two.
- 1:23:34Speaker 2: That's when we introduced him. That's when we.
- 1:23:35Speaker 4: Introduce Yeah, yeah, okay, I loved you know, Rowdy is
- 1:23:40Speaker 4: that's I think something more than shockingly, more than anything
- 1:23:43Speaker 4: that people would go now is a is there a
- 1:23:46Speaker 4: dead dog that's a character in this show, a real
- 1:23:48Speaker 4: stuff dead dog.
- 1:23:49Speaker 5: That would be a huge issue.
- 1:23:51Speaker 1: Bill. I don't know if the urban legend is true,
- 1:23:53Speaker 1: and I really don't want you to correct it if
- 1:23:54Speaker 1: it's not. But Donald and I were discussing in an
- 1:23:56Speaker 1: earlier episode of the podcast that when the one the
- 1:24:00Speaker 1: prop men was let go, he hid Rowdy in the
- 1:24:02Speaker 1: ceiling tiles of the prop room. That's true, that's true.
- 1:24:06Speaker 2: That is true. I told you, I told you it's true.
- 1:24:09Speaker 4: Yeah, we had to let someone go for different reasons,
- 1:24:13Speaker 4: and he knew that that was a prop that he
- 1:24:15Speaker 4: had that was a character on the show, so he
- 1:24:17Speaker 4: tried to get us back by hiding it in the
- 1:24:20Speaker 4: above the tiles. He locked himself in there and hid
- 1:24:22Speaker 4: that poor dead dog above the tiles. And by the way,
- 1:24:25Speaker 4: we found it right away. So when we got an
- 1:24:28Speaker 4: extra one, we were only getting an extra one in
- 1:24:31Speaker 4: case something ever happened to the real one. But part
- 1:24:33Speaker 4: of the lore became that we got an extra dead
- 1:24:35Speaker 4: dog to you know, replace the one that was lost.
- 1:24:38Speaker 4: But it's not it's just to generate. It's just in
- 1:24:41Speaker 4: a weird way. That's what generated that story of what
- 1:24:44Speaker 4: would we do?
- 1:24:44Speaker 1: And then Bill that gave birth to a beautiful, very
- 1:24:48Speaker 1: moving storyline of introducing Stephen the other I was already
- 1:24:57Speaker 1: laughing with on a the end.
- 1:24:58Speaker 2: Did you get Rowdy or did you get Stephen?
- 1:25:00Speaker 1: I got nothing neither. They're all I told you this story.
- 1:25:02Speaker 2: I mean, when we break so we don't live together anymore.
- 1:25:05Speaker 2: At one point, who gets who gets who?
- 1:25:08Speaker 4: Oh? I forgot who got rowdy and who got Steven?
- 1:25:10Speaker 1: I don't remember. But Bill, I was laughing with Donald
- 1:25:12Speaker 1: about how someone can't tell the difference. And I feel
- 1:25:16Speaker 1: where their old taxidermy balls are, and I go, no,
- 1:25:19Speaker 1: that's Steven.
- 1:25:22Speaker 5: You knew one of them was fixed, so Rowdy hit that.
- 1:25:28Speaker 4: I think that's Donald's line to open.
- 1:25:34Speaker 1: I don't see. I don't know if today you could
- 1:25:36Speaker 1: do taxidermy dead dogs humping someone's leg.
- 1:25:39Speaker 4: Yeah, I don't know.
- 1:25:40Speaker 2: It's a whole.
- 1:25:43Speaker 4: Everybody not to make this an end line. But this
- 1:25:46Speaker 4: was such a fun exercise for me because everybody always
- 1:25:50Speaker 4: asks me what my favorite episode of Scrubs is, and
- 1:25:54Speaker 4: I don't know how you guys feel. I always say
- 1:25:57Speaker 4: the pilot because remember reminds me of first meeting you all,
- 1:26:02Speaker 4: and of the experience and the people so much more
- 1:26:06Speaker 4: than any specific episodes. When I watch these, like the
- 1:26:08Speaker 4: first one, two or three episodes, that's what I remember
- 1:26:12Speaker 4: is seeing you two idiots become friends and having to
- 1:26:16Speaker 4: deal with the pluses and minuses of that when you
- 1:26:18Speaker 4: came in crazy hungover to work, but also when I
- 1:26:21Speaker 4: would see your friendship on screen, you know, and seeing
- 1:26:24Speaker 4: how people were afraid of Johnny C and how that translated,
- 1:26:27Speaker 4: and seeing Donald's chemistry with Judy and Zach and Sarah's
- 1:26:32Speaker 4: puppy dog love for each I mean, it's fantastic.
- 1:26:34Speaker 5: So that's what this stuff.
- 1:26:35Speaker 4: Takes me back to, you know, is how cool it
- 1:26:38Speaker 4: is that not only that you two are still friends,
- 1:26:40Speaker 4: but that we all still spend time together and talk.
- 1:26:42Speaker 2: You Know, I say, I love a lot I've noticed,
- 1:26:45Speaker 2: but I truly do love that about what we've done together.
- 1:26:49Speaker 2: You know, we didn't just build a television show together.
- 1:26:52Speaker 2: You know. It wasn't just you know, you created a show,
- 1:26:55Speaker 2: we acted and it'd see you later. It's we become
- 1:26:58Speaker 2: like a family, and when we see each other it's
- 1:27:01Speaker 2: so amazing. And you know, I don't see everybody as
- 1:27:05Speaker 2: much as I see the two of you, but it's
- 1:27:07Speaker 2: always it's always dope, you know what I mean. I enjoy.
- 1:27:11Speaker 2: I know I'm gonna laugh. I know i'm gonna you
- 1:27:13Speaker 2: know what I mean, I know I'm gonna feel good.
- 1:27:15Speaker 2: It's always great to be around y'all.
- 1:27:18Speaker 4: So happy.
- 1:27:18Speaker 1: Thank you so much, Bill for coming on. And I
- 1:27:20Speaker 1: hope that you'll do this. I mean, it makes sense
- 1:27:23Speaker 1: of all people for you to come on a bunch
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: to this because I hope, I hope you will, because
- 1:27:27Speaker 1: you know, people seem to be really liking it and
- 1:27:29Speaker 1: which makes a smile, and it makes so much sense
- 1:27:32Speaker 1: to have you on whenever you're willing to come on.
- 1:27:35Speaker 5: You know what I thought you could do that.
- 1:27:37Speaker 4: You can either use this cut it or take this
- 1:27:40Speaker 4: pitch and do it from now on on any podcast
- 1:27:43Speaker 4: that I'm not on. If you guys run into a
- 1:27:47Speaker 4: question with the guests or with each other, why did
- 1:27:49Speaker 4: this happen?
- 1:27:49Speaker 5: Or is this true? You can fire it off to me.
- 1:27:53Speaker 4: I will voice mema record a one line response that
- 1:27:55Speaker 4: you can edit in that.
- 1:27:57Speaker 1: That's great, that's very smart'd be like all right, Joelle,
- 1:28:01Speaker 1: we need a bill voice note answer on this question
- 1:28:04Speaker 1: and then we'll just cut it in when we do
- 1:28:06Speaker 1: the podcast editing.
- 1:28:07Speaker 4: I love yeah, you know, as if I'm hovering there
- 1:28:11Speaker 4: all the time, which I will not be. This is
- 1:28:13Speaker 4: great what you guys are doing. I love you both,
- 1:28:14Speaker 4: I miss you both.
- 1:28:15Speaker 1: Thank you and and we love you and thank you.
- 1:28:19Speaker 1: And you know, we ended the last episode by giving
- 1:28:22Speaker 1: a shout out to the medical community, and I think
- 1:28:25Speaker 1: it's right to do it since we were a show
- 1:28:26Speaker 1: about a hospital. Just to give all our love to
- 1:28:29Speaker 1: anybody who's listening to this, who has anyone fighting on
- 1:28:32Speaker 1: the front lines of this insanity. Thank you so much
- 1:28:35Speaker 1: for your courage and uh and and for being there
- 1:28:38Speaker 1: for for all of us.
- 1:28:39Speaker 4: And yeah, there's a thousand things you can do to
- 1:28:41Speaker 4: be of service. You can write a check, or you
- 1:28:44Speaker 4: can call your friend that's working at a hospital and
- 1:28:46Speaker 4: talk to him or her every night just to see
- 1:28:48Speaker 4: how they're doing.
- 1:28:48Speaker 5: But spend a few minutes and do it.
- 1:28:51Speaker 1: Thank you so much. And on that note, Donald, will
- 1:28:53Speaker 1: you lead us in song?
- 1:28:55Speaker 2: Yeah? Five five six story.
- 1:29:00Speaker 3: Show we made about a bunch of talks and nurses
- 1:29:04Speaker 3: in Canada whom I.
- 1:29:06Speaker 5: Said, here's the story.
- 1:29:09Speaker 3: NEPWLL should know, so gather around you here up, gather
- 1:29:15Speaker 3: around you here, up.
- 1:29:16Speaker 1: Scruts me.
- 1:29:17Speaker 5: My show is a
