- 0:00Dot com Welcome to the daily quote, the podcast designed to
- 0:07kick start your day in a positive way.
- 0:11I'm your host Andrew McGivern, and this episode is brought to
- 0:13you by the great News Podcast because good news should be
- 0:16heard. Link is in the show notes.
- 0:19Today's quote sounds wrong at first.
- 0:22It is designed to That comes from Zig Ziglar, one of the most
- 0:27celebrated motivational speakers and authors of the 20th century,
- 0:31a man who dedicated his life to helping people close the gap
- 0:35between where they are and where they want to be.
- 0:39And he deliberately flipped one of the oldest sayings in the
- 0:43English language on its head when he said anything worth
- 0:49doing is worth doing poorly until you can learn to do it
- 0:56well. I'm sure you've heard the
- 0:58original Anything worth doing is worth doing well.
- 1:03It sounds like wisdom. It sounds like standards.
- 1:08And buried inside it, quiet and dangerous is one of the most
- 1:12effective excuses for never starting anything.
- 1:15Because if it's only worth doing when you can do it well, then
- 1:19you have to be good before you begin, and nobody is good before
- 1:25they begin. So the thing stays undone, the
- 1:29business stays unstarted, the book stays unwritten, the
- 1:33conversation stays unhad, the new skill stays unpracticed, and
- 1:40the gap between where you are and where you want to be stays
- 1:44exactly the same while you wait to be ready.
- 1:49Ziggler understood this trap better than almost anyone.
- 1:52The enemy of beginning isn't laziness, it's perfectionism.
- 1:58It's the internal voice that says not yet that tells you to
- 2:01wait until the conditions are right, the skills are sharp, the
- 2:07plan is airtight. And because those conditions
- 2:11never quite arrive, not yet becomes never, his reframe is
- 2:17both simple and revolutionary. Of course the first attempt will
- 2:22be poor. Of course the early work will be
- 2:25rough. Of course the beginner's version
- 2:28of anything will be inferior to the experts version.
- 2:33That's not a reason not to start.
- 2:35That's what starting is. Doing it poorly is the first
- 2:39step on the path to doing it well.
- 2:41And you cannot skip it. You can only go through it.
- 2:45The second-half of the quote is where the whole thing comes
- 2:48alive until you can learn to do it well.
- 2:53Ziegler wasn't giving permission to stay mediocre.
- 2:57He was giving permission to begin, and trusting that if
- 3:01something is worth doing, the doing of it, even poorly, will
- 3:06teach you what you need to know to do it better.
- 3:09Progress doesn't wait for perfection.
- 3:13It builds through imperfect repetition.
- 3:17The first episode of this podcast was poor by any
- 3:21objective measure. The audio wasn't perfect.
- 3:25I even though I know a lot about audio, I used too many plug
- 3:29insurance, tried to make it sound even better and I made it
- 3:31sound worse. The delivery was a little rough.
- 3:34I had never done a solo podcast before.
- 3:37I'd always been either Co hosting or doing roundtable
- 3:40discussions. The structure was still finding
- 3:43itself. If I had waited until I could do
- 3:47it perfectly, I'd have never started at all.
- 3:51Every episode since has been built on top of that imperfect
- 3:54first one. Not because I planned it that
- 3:57way, but because Zig Ziglar is right.
- 4:01Doing it poorly consistently is how you eventually get to doing
- 4:06it well. So here's the question.
- 4:10What are you waiting to be good at before you'll allow yourself
- 4:14to begin? Because if it's worth doing,
- 4:18it's worth doing poorly right now, today, with the skills you
- 4:24currently have and the knowledge you don't yet possess.
- 4:28Start, Do it badly and learn. Then do it less badly and repeat
- 4:36over and over again. That's not a shortcut around the
- 4:40work. That's exactly how the work gets
- 4:42done. That's going to do it for today.
- 4:45I'm Andrew McGivern, signing off for now, but I'll be back
- 4:50tomorrow. Same pod time, same pod station
- 4:55with another daily quote.
