Transcript
- 0:00And instead of resting, instead of joy, we hover over it.
- 0:03Performance is exhausting, even when it's positive.
- 0:07Especially when it's positive because you never get to exhale.
- 0:10You're always maintaining it, always checking whether it's
- 0:13still convincing. And eventually the joy starts to
- 0:16feel like work. And that's when you find out
- 0:18what the quiet cost is. See, this self monitoring does
- 0:22something to us. We stop trusting our own
- 0:24emotional signals. We begin filtering feelings
- 0:27automatically, without even noticing that we're doing it.
- 0:30Is it still worth sharing? Is this impressive enough?
- 0:32Does this say something good about me?
- 0:34And when joy doesn't pass that test, we dismiss it.
- 0:37We overlook contentment because it's too ordinary.
- 0:40We ignore peace because it's not exciting.
- 0:44We chase. We chase intensity because it
- 0:47photographs better. Slowly, we forget what joy
- 0:50actually looks like in our bodies and what it feels like.
