- Argentina survives the scare! This is The Sports Reset for Wednesday July 8th At the World Cup, Argentina beat Egypt 3 to 2 in the Round of 16, moving a heavy contender on. Egypt made them work for it, but Argentina found enough finishing to get through a five-goal knockout game without needing penalties. Switzerland joined them in the quarterfinals after a 0 to 0 draw with Colombia, then advancing 4 to 3 on penalties. That is a tough exit for Colombia and a major closeout moment for Switzerland. The World Cup quarterfinals begin on Thursday with France playing Morocco. In MLB, The Jays handled the San Francisco Giants 9 to 3 at Oracle Park, a useful bounce in a West Coast series. The wildest baseball score came at Citi Field, where the Kansas City Royals outlasted the New York Mets 16 to 12 in a game that turned into a full bullpen test. Looking ahead, today is all MLB, and The Jays stay in San Francisco for another game against the Giants at Oracle Park. The New York Yankees are back at Tropicana Field against the Tampa Bay Rays, which keeps the focus on a division matchup after Tampa Bay took yesterday’s game 6 to 4. The Kansas City Royals and New York Mets meet again at Citi Field after combining for 28 runs, so the immediate question is whether either pitching staff can settle things down. The Milwaukee Brewers also visit the St. Louis Cardinals after sweeping Tuesday’s doubleheader, while the Colorado Rockies get another crack at the Los Angeles Dodgers after stealing a 4 to 3 win at Dodger Stadium.
