- 0:23Now let's get into today's topic.
- 0:27From what I hear, the the periodization is already set
- 0:31there. Hey, hey guys, here we are.
- 0:32This is our macro, right? This is what we're looking at.
- 0:37Here's where things overlap. Here's where we can start the
- 0:41red flag things. Here's the intensity levels.
- 0:46Here's where we need people to evolve.
- 0:48I'm going to sidestep here. Do you ever take that data and
- 0:52and map it back to the results that you're getting?
- 0:56Yeah, Yeah, we do. We like we're very much if it
- 1:02doesn't broke, if it's not broke, don't fix it.
- 1:04So like we don't go back to the drawing board every year.
- 1:08Like I said, we start, I give when I when I e-mail out.
- 1:12OK, here's a 2026 sheet. Also here's the 2025 sheet.
- 1:16So you can you know, if you wanted to pull what you did last
- 1:19year and start throwing it in, cool.
- 1:23I think with, with this, like I said with with Heist, I really
- 1:31believe that with high schoolers, a lot of stuff works
- 1:36keeping them healthy and like with distance runners, making
- 1:41like getting them willing to run.
- 1:43You know, the getting a boy to run, want to run 5055 miles a
- 1:50week is probably the most work, right?
- 1:53Yeah. And then keeping them healthy
- 1:55enough overtime to be able to get to that point.
- 2:00That's the tough part. For for instance, we're not like
- 2:07I, like I said, I'm taking on the long sprints group this year
- 2:09because my coach retired and we're not going to change.
- 2:13I'm not going to really rewrite what they did because they were
- 2:17very successful. We had a boy won, won the state
- 2:20championship in the 400 and our 4x4 came in second and we ran
- 2:27315. And how that how that team came
- 2:31together is actually really special.
- 2:34So we can talk about that in a little bit because it's a good
- 2:36example of how all this stuff works.
- 2:38But they were like, So what we what we're doing works.
- 2:44However, like there's some comments that we've heard from
- 2:47kids like, yeah, we didn't really, we didn't really do a
- 2:50lot. We didn't, you know, we did
- 2:52every other day. We did like, you know, hurdle
- 2:55hops in in hips and mobility and bands and stuff.
- 3:00It's like sometimes with high schoolers, you kind of got to
- 3:05trick them, right? Like because we really, yeah, we
- 3:07don't need to go run 200 repeats everyday, even if that's what it
- 3:11like, even if a kid thinks he needs to like the, you know,
- 3:14the, the, the addiction to more, we don't.
- 3:18But at the same time, like, you know, I want the kids to enjoy
- 3:22practice. So yeah, I am going to look at
- 3:25what what the group did worked, but I'm going to look at, OK,
- 3:29how can I give them something a little, you know, it hits the
- 3:32stimulus that one of those X Factor or recovery days hits,
- 3:36but trick them into it and it's going to seem like they're doing
- 3:40something different. So give them a little more
- 3:42variation in exercises, but we're probably going to be doing
- 3:46kind of the same thing. Right?
- 3:50Yeah. So that was just OK.
- 3:53You know, hearing his talk in the hallway and then thinking
- 3:57about what what they were OK Why are they saying it was
- 4:01repetitive? OK.
- 4:01As I looked back through what what we did last year with that
- 4:06group, Yeah, they did. Every other day was kind of the
- 4:09same. It was hard workout, recovery
- 4:12day, meet day, recovery day. In the recovery days, we're all
- 4:16pretty similar as far as workouts go.
- 4:20Like we don't, we don't do anything really crazy.
- 4:25You know, we do a Max speed day for sprinters, we'll do a Max
- 4:29speed day, a recovery day, we'll do a speed endurance day, right?
- 4:34We're not reading the wheel distance runners If we if we
- 4:40need to get any better anywhere, it's really in the distance
- 4:42group. But again, like hit VO2 Max and
- 4:48tempo early in the season, get to, you know, mile to mile pace
- 4:53workouts as the season progresses, right?
- 4:56I think we got to ever if I ever think about adjusting stuff
- 5:01there. It's like I heard I heard a
- 5:04comment from one of my seniors a few years ago and she's like
- 5:08this, this this season wasn't hard enough.
- 5:11And I'm like, you are the last person I would have ever
- 5:14expected to say that. And if you knew the girl, you'd
- 5:17understand, like freshman, sophomore, just, you know,
- 5:20hated, hated the work, loved running, but just, you know,
- 5:25complainer supreme. And then turned into like one of
- 5:30the studs. And I was like, OK, well, if if
- 5:32she's saying that it was quite hard enough this year, then I've
- 5:36got to I've got to look back at what we were doing, you know, So
- 5:39a lot of it is just listen to what the kids are saying.
- 5:42Yeah, yeah. Well, you know what though, I, I
- 5:45think that one of the the greatest pieces of the puzzle
- 5:48that you're you're pointing out here, which maybe maybe others
- 5:54aren't hearing it, is that the simplicity is what drives to
- 5:59success. It is.
- 6:00And then on top of that, sometimes the success, it looks
- 6:04really freaking boring, right? It's it's showing up and doing
- 6:10the small things right every single day it.
- 6:13Really is. That's all it is.
- 6:15And people get in these these, and what drives me nuts are
- 6:18these fancy, smancy, newfangled workouts that people come up
- 6:26with. And I'm like, what are you
- 6:29doing? Go back to what's proven and
- 6:33what's simple. Just because it's complex
- 6:35doesn't mean you need to do it. Right, right.
- 6:38Yeah. Drives me like I.
- 6:40Distance like, you know, I think so there's a, there's a one of
- 6:45the local coaches asked on Facebook, like what system do
- 6:48you use for your distance runners?
- 6:50I was like, there is, I don't use the system like I I've read
- 6:56everything like there's some flavor of the week stuff,
- 7:01obviously, but like I went and I've gone to USATF level 2.
- 7:06You know, different coaches have different varying opinions on on
- 7:10the alphabet crew training, right?
- 7:15I don't take credit for that nickname.
- 7:17That's a Charles Ryan, San Jose State.
- 7:19He can't he came up with that nickname, but I love it.
- 7:22The USTUSTFCCCA alphabet crew. I got you.
- 7:27I'm laughing. I knew what you were talking
- 7:29about. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 7:30So you get it. So like I pro, I just use the
- 7:35lingo that I learned there because it describes what we
- 7:38need to do, right. Like you can you can just tell
- 7:41when there's a coach who says who describes their workout.
- 7:45It's like you made that word up and you were, you can just tell
- 7:49like you're trying to cut, trying a little too hard to come
- 7:55up with your own thing, right? Like I, I love training.
- 8:00I love talking training. And also like it almost gets
- 8:04boring sometimes because yes, just we, we know we have decades
- 8:10of science now. We know it works.
- 8:13It doesn't have to be pretty, right?
- 8:15You've got to fit it into your schedule, right?
- 8:17Sometimes, like last year, thankfully we don't have this
- 8:21this year, but last year we had a week where we had four meets
- 8:25in eight days. Oh.
- 8:28Right. So we still we, we have
- 8:30conference meets, we have conference duels and we'd like
- 8:33winning our conference means something to us, but we had a
- 8:36crappy week where we ended up with two duels in one week.
- 8:40So we went Saturday, Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday.
- 8:44Right. No.
- 8:44Way yes, it was. It was not the best week, but
- 8:50that's where like your coaching knowledge and your training
- 8:53knowledge you go is OK. What do I do when I have that
- 8:55situation? Talk about that.
- 8:58Yeah, so I'm I, it's, oh, stepping back is OK.
- 9:09I've got, if I've got a meet, if I have a, if we're covering
- 9:11recovering from a meet on Sunday and we have a meet on Tuesday
- 9:17and we have a meet on Thursday, I'm probably not going to try to
- 9:20squeeze a workout in on Monday. I'm probably not going to try to
- 9:25squeeze a workout in a Wednesday.
- 9:28If you, if you're a Tony Howler guy, one of the best things you
- 9:32can pick up from him is that meats count as a stimulus,
- 9:40right? So how and this is where the
- 9:46planning comes in when you have that really dense bit of
- 9:52competition and some, you know, some programs care more about
- 9:56the invites, some programs care about their league.
- 10:01There are some programs that don't care about their league at
- 10:04all. A lot of those programs are good
- 10:06enough that they just don't have to worry about it, right?
- 10:09You can, you can pull your studs and still win, right?
- 10:13But we like to balance it and we do care about our conference and
- 10:19so it's OK. What can we do on earth that our
- 10:23Tuesday meet to win it? What events can we focus on?
- 10:29What events are we probably going to win automatically,
- 10:32right? Are we facing a distance team or
- 10:34sprints team? So what do we have to emphasize
- 10:37on Tuesday? OK, so can we de emphasize that
- 10:42on Thursday, you know, still run, the kids probably get a
- 10:45stimulus there. You know what, like maybe maybe
- 10:49a kid is running the 2 miles of tempo, right?
- 10:53And can we win by probably loading a kid up on Tuesday and
- 10:59he gets an easier job on Thursday?
- 11:02Vice versa, maybe a kid has an easier job on Tuesday, but then
- 11:06he's the one that really it's going to come down to on
- 11:08Thursday, right? And then let's be smart at our
- 11:15invites, right? Be cool to take a trophy home.
- 11:19But when we have that crazy week, OK, depending on what, you
- 11:27know, kid A or B or C did with those midweek meets, can we just
- 11:35focus on one thing or one relay team or something on Saturday,
- 11:39right? We don't have to go.
- 11:42We don't have to go run three events or four event.
- 11:45We're a four event state, so you're allowed to, you know,
- 11:48participate in 4 events. We don't got to load him up with
- 11:54four events four times and he doesn't got to compete in 16
- 11:59races in eight days. Doesn't make sense.
- 12:02That's smart. Right, I wanted you to say that
- 12:05out loud because you have a lot of coaches that feel like they
- 12:08have to have their kids in every event and that reality, you
- 12:11don't even have to have your best kids racing every week.
- 12:15You know, it just depends on how, how your program is
- 12:17structured. Some kids just don't need to do
- 12:19all that and they get to get them in it and they do 4 events.
- 12:22They're in the the field events, they're in the sprints or
- 12:26they're in, you know, multiple distance events.
- 12:27And I think what needs to happen here is people using need to go
- 12:31back to common sense and stop looking at all these
- 12:32spreadsheets all the time, right?
- 12:35People have gotten away from actually coaching and data is
- 12:39important, don't get me wrong. Or let's look at the
- 12:42spreadsheets the right way, track the right thing.
- 12:45Oh, oh, Billy has been in this many event, or this many events.
- 12:53Maybe he needs a break, right? Maybe.
- 12:56Or he's he said that this is his goal for the season.
- 13:00If we put too much on his back this week, he's not going to
- 13:02accomplish that goal. Right.
- 13:06And that's where the coming back to the point like the title of
- 13:10talk like one team, one system, like I, I also think you can
- 13:17hold two things. You can hold team goals and
- 13:20individual goals right? You can.
- 13:23There is there is time to accomplish the team goal and
- 13:26when when is the team and also give the kid what the kid wants
- 13:30and what the kid needs. Right, but it's probably.
- 13:34Not all going to happen in one week.
- 13:36Yeah, definitely not. Now 44 meets in in a week is,
- 13:39well, eight days. That's Oh my goodness, I can't
- 13:42imagine. That was that was a stressful
- 13:44week for for me for sure. I can imagine.
- 13:46I, you know what and I, I don't know what do we have?
- 13:48We don't have the numbers that you guys have and it's not a
- 13:51numbers game. It's just we just don't have
- 13:53those numbers just yet. I'm at a new school this year,
- 13:56so it's a little new for me, but typically we have anywhere from
- 14:0020 to 30 girls and you know about the same for the boys.
- 14:04I've I've never been one that I've had to have like these
- 14:06super large teams. Honestly, the smaller the better
- 14:08for me because then it's more manageable.
- 14:10And then we get serious kids out there, just people in the
- 14:13uniforms. But then, you know, looking at
- 14:17the amount of work that needs to be done, personally, I probably
- 14:21would have pulled out of one of those meets like outside of like
- 14:23the conference stuff. I know those dual meets matter
- 14:26for conferences. I probably would.
- 14:27I may have just me, I may have pulled out of like the inviting
- 14:31like listen, guys, this is just too much for y'all.
- 14:33Go sit your butt down somewhere. What depending on what's needed
- 14:37to your point, you have to look at the data the right way,
- 14:39right? Because if it's kid, hey, you're
- 14:41only doing 1 here, you got a couple here, we can do a fun
- 14:44relay here and it works and nobody's nobody's going to get
- 14:47injured, then that works. I just know sometimes, man, some
- 14:50of these coaches are like, I'm just going to load everybody up
- 14:53in every single meet and we're going to run into the wheels.
- 14:55Now, like, I don't want I don't want, you know, that stud, our
- 15:00400 guy there is one of those one of those meets our our 4x4
- 15:05team didn't run the four by four or the open or actually, I think
- 15:10our number. I think our number two guy ran
- 15:14the open that day so that he could get a taste of racing
- 15:19without Brody next to him, right, because he's always
- 15:23Xavier. Xavier was kind of always he was
- 15:29not not only in Brody's shadow, but like it was nice for him to
- 15:32be able to experience run it like it being on his shoulders
- 15:37for once, right? Think Brody was in like the four
- 15:41by one or something that day rather than the 404 by 4, right.
- 15:44So, yeah, it's all about it's we're not going to go.
- 15:51Connor isn't going to be in the 124 by 1, four by two every
- 15:54single meet. That's stupid.
- 15:56Like it it it what it would it be?
- 16:00Would it be good for us? Yeah, probably.
- 16:04But it's better for us if he's enjoying his time because then
- 16:08he's going to give all of himself, right?
- 16:11So it's better to, it's better to vary it.
- 16:13It's better to give him some variation, better to experience
- 16:16more. Maybe he doesn't.
- 16:18He doesn't realize if we never put him in the 400, he's never
- 16:21going to realize how good it could be, right?
- 16:23If we don't take this, you know, 2 Miller and put him in the 800
- 16:28might not realize they might be good, right.
- 16:31Yeah. So.
- 16:32And you give your kids enough, you give your kids opportunities
- 16:34in nice instances too, right? So I think that's cool.
- 16:38So kind of shifting gears here a little bit, right?
- 16:39Yeah. Again, I'm I'm still trying to
- 16:41wrap my mind around 8 or 4 meets in eight days.
- 16:43That's. It was yeah.
- 16:47So the one, the, the closing thing on that is I believe, I
- 16:53believe the invites, the last meets of that cycle were we
- 16:59split squad that day and our stud relay teams.
- 17:05So our 4 by 1 and our 4x4, which was a combination of like 7
- 17:10guys. I think they went to a meet in
- 17:12downtown Grand Rapids. And then there's a the girl, the
- 17:16girl a relays also went there and just focused on those.
- 17:22And then that opened up the opportunity for some JV kids to
- 17:26be able to go to an invite. So give some of the younger kids
- 17:30some experience at a less, a smaller invite, less pressure.
- 17:35And again, when I have 11 coaches, we can do that, right?
- 17:42And so yeah, my 2 spring coaches took the Sprint relays to the
- 17:46big meet and then me and the rest of the coaching staff took
- 17:50a normal size invite squad with some new faces to a different
- 17:55smaller, less pressure failed invite.
- 17:57Got some kids a taste of what they could do if they really
- 18:00apply themselves. So all.
- 18:01Right, there you go. And that's, that's just coaching
- 18:03common sense, right? But the, the CCS, as I call it,
- 18:08coaching common sense. So now you're, you're in
- 18:12Michigan, obviously. Let's talk about one of those
- 18:15major things that you guys have to face that maybe some other
- 18:19teams around the country don't have to face.
- 18:21And that's weather, right? How do you guys adapt to that?
- 18:24I know you have your plans in place, but how do you adapt to
- 18:27those? Hey, it's Mother Nature showing
- 18:30up, knocking at the door. How do we make adjustments?
- 18:33What do we do? How do you work with those
- 18:36coaches to adapt in those conditions?
- 18:38It's, it's communication and it's being, it's, it's, it all
- 18:42comes down to being on the same page.
- 18:45If it's so I will say that we're probably outside.
- 18:52We want to be outside if possible.
- 18:53So that the tough, the toughest part is our track is a mile away
- 18:56from the high school. So we got the high school
- 18:58complex and then the, the stadium is a mile down the road.
- 19:04And so that's the that's the toughest part.
- 19:09So if we that, that makes, that makes it just the travel part,
- 19:14especially with so many like with freshmen, sophomores, if we
- 19:18can be outside, we want to be outside.
- 19:20We'll also, we're also probably more likely to be outside than I
- 19:26bet some Sprint coaches would, would prefer.
- 19:32So we'll, we'll be out there in 40° weather.
- 19:36When it gets lower than that, you know, we're going to talk,
- 19:39OK. Are we going to really be doing
- 19:40acceleration work or Max velocity work?
- 19:43It might become more of a, a lactate day where we're not
- 19:47asking kids to fire out of the blocks, We're not asking kids to
- 19:51try to reach top speed, you know, but again, that's where
- 19:55the OK planning a week, a week ahead.
- 19:58We've got our. We've got our big macro cycle
- 20:01mapped out. Hopefully everybody remembered
- 20:03to put their plan for the weekend to the weekly sheet so
- 20:08we can look OK, weather is going to look like this and this and
- 20:10this doesn't make sense, right. And if it if it looks like it
- 20:14obviously isn't going to make sense, then we can come back
- 20:17together and figure out, OK, how does it make sense, right?
- 20:24And if, when this is all this is all operating under the
- 20:28assumption that the snow has melted by March 10.
- 20:33I think that I am probably the most stressed out of the year in
- 20:39the last two weeks of February in the first week of March,
- 20:42right? If I see snow on the on the
- 20:44forecast, then I'm probably not going to be the most fun person
- 20:48to talk to because I want my track clear the second Monday in
- 20:53March. So we can get outside, get
- 20:55outside, because even even if it's cold, like if this, if the
- 20:59sun is out, then we're probably going to have a good time,
- 21:01right? If it's not and if we have to be
- 21:05inside, then we're going to OK, how can we adapt to the
- 21:09hallways, right? We don't have a, we don't have a
- 21:14field house. We don't have an indoor track.
- 21:16We have hallways and it's not ideal.
- 21:21Running on tile isn't the best thing, but you know what we can
- 21:25do? We have, we are blessed in that
- 21:27our school has multiple nice long straightaways and we can do
- 21:33some 30m flies, we can do some, we can do some sort of lactate
- 21:42work if we need to. I can tell, OK, distance
- 21:45runners, you guys can run outside.
- 21:48It's fine, right? I'm going to stay inside and
- 21:51help crowd control at that point, right?
- 21:55And that's a, that's a, that's a big part of it is when we, when
- 21:57we all get inside, then I want to figure out how to get the
- 22:01distance runners working together so that I can help
- 22:04just, you know, wrangle the other hundred kids in the in a
- 22:10cramped hallway. And, you know, jumping workouts
- 22:15are not ideal inside. So a lot of times they're
- 22:19probably going to jump in and get some Max speed work in.
- 22:24And we've been blessed. Like I think we haven't.
- 22:26We haven't had a season where I think two seasons ago we didn't.
- 22:29We weren't inside at all. Last year.
- 22:32We were inside once because of a thunderstorm.
- 22:38But as far as like cold weather goes, the last few years has
- 22:41been pretty, pretty decent. We communicate during the day.
- 22:46So if we're OK, something's popping up, I want to just make
- 22:50that call by like 1:00 PM so I can tell parents and so that
- 22:54coaches so that we can get our text chain going and adapt what
- 22:59we're doing. Gotcha.
- 23:01Right. So the communication I'm
- 23:03guessing is maybe just text message or GroupMe or Remind or
- 23:07maybe emails. How do you guys immediately get
- 23:09in contact with each other? Yeah, so I've got a I've got a
- 23:12yearly 202026 coaches group chat just text message.
- 23:20Try to keep it simple. Unfortunately, my my throwing
- 23:26coach has Android. So it you know how that gets
- 23:29annoying. We got the green text like to
- 23:33give him crap for it. Yep.
- 23:35So, but as far as like e-mail communications, our school has
- 23:41final forms, which is the, the mass e-mail that I use for
- 23:46that's our, that's our roster software.
- 23:49So I can blast an e-mail out to the team really simply so I can,
- 23:54yeah, I can e-mail both boys and girls teams in about 5 minutes
- 23:57if I have to, depending on how long the message is.
- 24:01Yeah, coaches, I keep it simple. We just just a group text.
- 24:05Yeah, keep it simple. And I I throw it out there
- 24:07because again, coaches sometimes get into this sport and they go,
- 24:10we got to be have all the fancy tools and equipment.
- 24:12It's not necessary, you know, keep things simple.
- 24:15I keep, I keep driving at home. The more simple your program is,
- 24:18the more effective and efficient people can be, right?
- 24:21Complexity adds slowness. Yep, the the replace, replace
- 24:27complexity with expectations, right?
- 24:31I want everybody to know. I want them to have a good
- 24:34expectation of what they're going to get from me.
- 24:37I want them to have an expectation of what I expect
- 24:40from them. I want parents to have
- 24:42expectations about what they're going to get.
- 24:43I want athletes to have expectations about what they're
- 24:45going to get right. Like with if everybody, if
- 24:49everybody knows what they're in for, then we can do a lot of
- 24:54stuff with the simplest tools possible.
- 24:57There it is. And I you know what?
- 24:58That that's really one simple word Clarity right here it is
- 25:02this is what it is, right? You roll with that and if you
- 25:05don't understand it, then you ask questions.
- 25:07So. I would say I have never had a
- 25:12parent complain about getting too many emails right.
- 25:17You might have parents complain about not getting enough
- 25:20information, but you're never going to have so they can delete
- 25:23an e-mail if they want to read it, right?
- 25:25I've never had a coach complain about having too much
- 25:28information for me. I don't want people to be
- 25:30surprised, I want them to know what's going on.
- 25:35Yeah, over communicate. People would rather be over
- 25:40communicated with then be under communicated with and confused.
- 25:44Absolutely, 100%. I'd rather get over communicate
- 25:47than under communicate because you get you get assumptions when
- 25:50you under communicate and that that kind of leads me.
- 25:53That's one of the things I think that a lot of coaches make a
- 25:55mistake around. So what other, what other
- 25:58mistakes do you think as we kind of wind down here that you see
- 26:03other programs possibly making as they attempt to cater to
- 26:07athletes from 100 to 3200 right under one particular roof, so to
- 26:12speak? We already talked about, you
- 26:17know, too many events or too, you know, not varying it enough.
- 26:29I I don't like when I don't like when I hear programs have now,
- 26:34obviously, you know, sometimes coaching situations are what
- 26:37they are, but like, if you're, if you're runners aren't
- 26:41practicing at the same time, that's weird to me.
- 26:46I feel like the team should be together, right?
- 26:50For instance, our in our practice, our practice all
- 26:52starts together. We all have one team huddle for,
- 26:56you know, 5 to 10 minutes. We'd celebrate PRS, We hand out
- 27:05chains for the week, right? Stuff like that.
- 27:08Then we get to our team warm up and everybody warms up together,
- 27:11including throwers. Now we're not.
- 27:14Throwers will break off about halfway through.
- 27:17Distance runners might break off if if you know, sprint's doing
- 27:21a, you know, you know, when spring crews are doing that
- 27:23really long warm up because they got a big day coming up, you
- 27:26know, distance runners might peel off at some point.
- 27:28But yeah, I don't, I think that if you're trying to have success
- 27:34together, then your team needs to be together as much as
- 27:38possible. When, Yeah, when kids are not
- 27:48celebrating each other, Obviously I can't, I if I can't
- 27:56force a kid to go watch the throws, right.
- 27:59But at our home meets, like, yeah, we set all our stuff at
- 28:03the logo in the middle of the field, have our team camp there.
- 28:06And I am constantly walking by say, hey, get up.
- 28:09You don't, you're not running, you're not warming up.
- 28:11Go cheer for your friends, right.
- 28:13You know, go, go cheer for your friends right now.
- 28:16We don't need to. We don't need to be huddled in
- 28:21under the tent all day long. If you're not warming up for an
- 28:25event, you're not preparing yourself for an event, then go
- 28:28cheer for somebody. Let's see what else Not taking
- 28:34account. Like kids, I don't.
- 28:41I don't feel the need to force throwers or jumpers to run, for
- 28:49one thing. That's more of a middle school
- 28:50thing. But I know that there's still
- 28:51programs out there that feel like they have to make kids run
- 28:56running events for some reason. Hey gang, Mike Cunningham here.
