Latest / Jags A.M. / Ep. 63: Analyzing Jaguars' Roster After Free Agency Haul | Jags A.M. Podcast

- 0:16Speaker 1: Welcome into de exam. I'm kind of on a Stephen's
- 0:18Speaker 1: free agency in the NFL kicking off last Wednesday, and
- 0:21Speaker 1: a whole lot of changes to this Jaguars roster have
- 0:24Speaker 1: come about since that time. Brian Sexton is with me today,
- 0:27Speaker 1: John Osier is off, and Brian, I think the big
- 0:29Speaker 1: thing we need to talk about because at this point
- 0:31Speaker 1: last week Calvin Ridley was still in the mix, but
- 0:34Speaker 1: he has since signed with the Titans. So our first
- 0:36Speaker 1: big thing today is zeroed in because Zero is no
- 0:39Speaker 1: longer on this roster. Calvin Ridley getting a huge guaranteed
- 0:42Speaker 1: deal fifty million guaranteed over ninety two million over four
- 0:45Speaker 1: years as he heads to the Titans. Now, Brian, no
- 0:47Speaker 1: one's excited when a Jaguar goes to play for the Titans.
- 0:50Speaker 1: But when you saw that contract deal, it kind of
- 0:52Speaker 1: made sense.
- 0:52Speaker 2: Yeah, you didn't want to pay that.
- 0:54Speaker 3: The Jaguars had him here all year last year, and
- 0:57Speaker 3: you know it was a contract year for Calvin, and
- 0:59Speaker 3: yet he still struggled to be in the right place
- 1:01Speaker 3: at the right time way too often.
- 1:04Speaker 2: If you watched the.
- 1:04Speaker 3: Jags last year, you know there were moments where you're thinking,
- 1:07Speaker 3: what is he doing so. If he's going to get
- 1:10Speaker 3: fifty million guaranteed dollars to go to a place where
- 1:12Speaker 3: he might not be in the right place at the
- 1:15Speaker 3: right time with the quarterback who's not that accurate, I
- 1:17Speaker 3: say good luck.
- 1:18Speaker 2: To you, Titans.
- 1:19Speaker 3: Calvin Ridley's a dynamic talent. We watched him on the
- 1:22Speaker 3: training camp field last year and had huge expectations for
- 1:25Speaker 3: what he would do, and at times kai I mean,
- 1:28Speaker 3: we went wow, what he has done, what he did
- 1:31Speaker 3: in his only season in Jacksonville was you know, give
- 1:35Speaker 3: us a glimpse, give us a taste.
- 1:37Speaker 2: Of what he was capable of.
- 1:39Speaker 3: And the Titans said, we love him, we'll pay him,
- 1:41Speaker 3: and the Jaguars said, we'll move on a.
- 1:44Speaker 1: Little bit of what could have been right because if
- 1:45Speaker 1: you look at the situation a little bit differently, maybe
- 1:47Speaker 1: if Josh Allen's contract gets sorted out a little bit sooner,
- 1:50Speaker 1: you can franchise tag him, maybe get another year and
- 1:52Speaker 1: see what that would turn into. But all for not,
- 1:55Speaker 1: as Calvin is now headed to Tennessee. Our second big
- 1:58Speaker 1: thing today is a big addition. Because they didn't spend
- 2:00Speaker 1: that money on wide receiver Calvin Ridley, they were able
- 2:03Speaker 1: to send it on a big guy, the big addition
- 2:05Speaker 1: being Eric Armstead and the defensive lineman Brian We've been
- 2:08Speaker 1: talking for a while about, you know, adding some big
- 2:11Speaker 1: guys to line Those were big issues for this team
- 2:13Speaker 1: last year and certainly fills a need both in leadership
- 2:16Speaker 1: and on the field.
- 2:17Speaker 2: Well, he's big and he's got great wingspan.
- 2:19Speaker 3: When you watch him play as we are right now,
- 2:21Speaker 3: you see a guy who can make a play even
- 2:23Speaker 3: when it seems like the play isn't there to be made.
- 2:25Speaker 3: The quarterback sliding out of the pocket, but he can
- 2:28Speaker 3: reach and pull a guy to the ground. Imagine what
- 2:30Speaker 3: you can do with a big body like Eric Armstead
- 2:33Speaker 3: pushing the pocket a We didn't have that last year
- 2:36Speaker 3: where the pocket was making the quarterback decide to go
- 2:39Speaker 3: to his left and Josh Allen or to his right
- 2:42Speaker 3: and Trayvon Walker. So what you've got now is quarterbacks,
- 2:46Speaker 3: if there is not a lot of time to throw
- 2:48Speaker 3: the ball, are going to have to get on the move,
- 2:50Speaker 3: which should set up the edge guys to make even
- 2:52Speaker 3: more plays. And the other thing I think is really
- 2:54Speaker 3: interesting is what you can do with two guys with
- 2:57Speaker 3: great wingspan, both Trayvon Waller and Armstead are tall, have
- 3:02Speaker 3: great length of shoulder, length of arm and are guys
- 3:05Speaker 3: who can make plays. I think it's gonna be really
- 3:07Speaker 3: interesting to see how Ryan Nielsen dials up different games
- 3:10Speaker 3: and stunts with those guys on the same side of
- 3:13Speaker 3: the line.
- 3:13Speaker 1: Absolutely. One final big thing for US today receiver rumor.
- 3:17Speaker 1: Now there was some talk of fellow forty nine er
- 3:19Speaker 1: Brandon a Youth possibly getting traded over here, but now
- 3:22Speaker 1: the focus kind of shifting to the draft. Is a
- 3:24Speaker 1: wide receiver in the mix for seventeen because this is
- 3:27Speaker 1: a deep wide receiver draft. Do we think that the
- 3:30Speaker 1: team is done yet, Brian, or is this something where
- 3:32Speaker 1: they're going to try to make a trade happen or
- 3:34Speaker 1: are they already focusing on the draft?
- 3:36Speaker 3: Well, I don't know how you get anything, looks, I
- 3:38Speaker 3: don't know how you got what you got done last
- 3:40Speaker 3: week with as little cap room as they had, and
- 3:43Speaker 3: with Josh Allen seeing they were twenty four million dollars
- 3:45Speaker 3: on the cap.
- 3:46Speaker 2: I don't know this, but I would.
- 3:47Speaker 3: Guess that they can't do anything more really until they
- 3:50Speaker 3: get something done with Josh Allen, and they have until
- 3:52Speaker 3: July fifteenth, which is when they either have to stick
- 3:55Speaker 3: the tag on him for the rest of the year,
- 3:57Speaker 3: or get a deal done to get that number down
- 4:00Speaker 3: and if they want, they can go play there. But
- 4:02Speaker 3: you know, kay, look, the draft is filled with receivers.
- 4:06Speaker 3: College football now plays the passing game that the NFL does,
- 4:09Speaker 3: So receivers. I don't want to say they're a dime
- 4:11Speaker 3: a dozen, but you can find good receivers later in
- 4:14Speaker 3: the draft. If you have a chance at a Marvin
- 4:16Speaker 3: Harrison junior, a Roma Dunze from Washington, all right, then
- 4:20Speaker 3: maybe because that looks like a game changer. But where
- 4:23Speaker 3: the Jaguars sit and where need is for them, we've
- 4:25Speaker 3: talked about this. They have one offensive tackle under contract
- 4:29Speaker 3: beyond this season one Cam Robinson and Walker Little's deals
- 4:32Speaker 3: expire at the end of twenty twenty four, so you're
- 4:34Speaker 3: going to want to go and get a young tackle
- 4:37Speaker 3: somewhere in the first two rounds.
- 4:38Speaker 2: They need a corner.
- 4:39Speaker 3: Also, know what they've got will last for now, but
- 4:44Speaker 3: you want a young corner to develop opposite of where
- 4:48Speaker 3: you're sitting. So I can't imagine that they're going to
- 4:50Speaker 3: spend a whole lot of time at wide receiver on
- 4:53Speaker 3: seventeen unless the unthinkable happens and one of those guys
- 4:57Speaker 3: starts to drop down the board and they say, well,
- 4:59Speaker 3: what a the cost to go up?
- 5:01Speaker 2: But I would say that receiver's going to be done
- 5:02Speaker 2: until the draft.
- 5:03Speaker 1: All about how the board falls. So we still got
- 5:05Speaker 1: a couple of weeks, so as we look forward to
- 5:07Speaker 1: the draft in April, try to figure things out exactly
- 5:10Speaker 1: what they're going to do. Stay with us here on Jagsam.
- 5:12Speaker 1: Coming up after the break, we're gonna hear from some
- 5:13Speaker 1: of those new additions from free agency. Freight Move the Freight,
- 5:33Speaker 1: Move the Freight. Magellan Transport voted the coolest office space
- 5:36Speaker 1: in Jacksonville. You can apply online at Magellanlogistics dot com. Today,
- 5:41Speaker 1: welcome back to Jagsam in the Hyundai Studios. Brian Sexton
- 5:44Speaker 1: is with me today, John oser Off, I assume on
- 5:47Speaker 1: a beach somewhere with a cocktail in his hand, at
- 5:49Speaker 1: least I hope.
- 5:50Speaker 2: So for John Stone, I strike you as a beach.
- 5:51Speaker 1: Guy, absolutely, probably a giant I've seen his giant beach
- 5:55Speaker 1: hats at training camp, so I assume he's a giant
- 5:58Speaker 1: hat guy on the beach.
- 5:58Speaker 3: I've never seen him at the beach. I like you
- 6:01Speaker 3: would think the hat would be there if he was.
- 6:02Speaker 1: All right, guys, if you're on a beach somewhere, go
- 6:04Speaker 1: look for Ozone. I think he might be out there.
- 6:07Speaker 1: He'll be back with us next week. But a lot
- 6:09Speaker 1: of going on this week. I mean, we've had some
- 6:12Speaker 1: different shows since then, but we haven't had a jags
- 6:13Speaker 1: Am since all these new additions to the team. Brian,
- 6:17Speaker 1: is there a name that sticks out to you so
- 6:18Speaker 1: far that is kind of the jewel of the class.
- 6:20Speaker 1: I feel like everybody kind of fits a need. Obviously
- 6:22Speaker 1: Armstead is the newest and latest, which is great, but
- 6:25Speaker 1: all of them kind of fit a need, which is great. Well.
- 6:27Speaker 3: Trent Balkey, when he sat before the media in late January,
- 6:30Speaker 3: Kai talked about getting more physical up front on both
- 6:34Speaker 3: sides of the ball, and we assumed obviously that on
- 6:37Speaker 3: offense that meant changing center right, finding a guy that
- 6:40Speaker 3: you could count on that would help.
- 6:42Speaker 2: You on third and short, which the Jaguar struggled at.
- 6:44Speaker 3: So Mitch Moore immediately comes to mind when you watch
- 6:47Speaker 3: the highlights of him and what he was able to
- 6:49Speaker 3: do in that Bill's offense, which was more past centric, right,
- 6:52Speaker 3: I mean, they threw the ball first, but Mitch gets
- 6:54Speaker 3: out there and moves guys, which we didn't see enough
- 6:57Speaker 3: of with Luke Fordner last year. You need someone who
- 6:59Speaker 3: can clearer space, especially on third down and short so
- 7:03Speaker 3: Mitch Moore strikes that.
- 7:04Speaker 2: But then you bring in Eric Armstead, who he.
- 7:07Speaker 3: Came through here nine years ago on a rookie prospect visit,
- 7:11Speaker 3: and I will never forget how tall and long he.
- 7:16Speaker 2: Was for defensive tackle.
- 7:17Speaker 3: Right We're all used to Calais Campbell, who plays out
- 7:19Speaker 3: on the end, but this is a guy who's been
- 7:21Speaker 3: an interior guy. And of course he went on to
- 7:23Speaker 3: great success with the Niners and is not just a
- 7:27Speaker 3: stud on the field but off the field as a
- 7:29Speaker 3: four time NFL Walter Payton Man of the Year nominee
- 7:34Speaker 3: from the Niners. So you're bringing in a big guy
- 7:37Speaker 3: who will create a lot of havoc in the middle
- 7:38Speaker 3: of the line.
- 7:39Speaker 2: Makes we hope that he does.
- 7:41Speaker 3: And I think those two guys are the ones that
- 7:43Speaker 3: meet the test that Trent set out that day, which
- 7:47Speaker 3: was we have to be more physical.
- 7:49Speaker 1: I think Armstence specifically, probably one of Trent Balky's better
- 7:53Speaker 1: draft picks. He was drafted by Trent Balkey in San Francisco.
- 7:56Speaker 1: That relationship certainly has withstood time because he got him
- 7:59Speaker 1: to sign here in Jacksonville, and Armstead spoke to us
- 8:02Speaker 1: yesterday and said a little bit about what he's hoping
- 8:04Speaker 1: to bring to his new team.
- 8:06Speaker 4: The Jags were a good team before me, and you know,
- 8:10Speaker 4: whenever I entered the situation, you know, not just football,
- 8:14Speaker 4: but in life in general, and when I'm meeting people,
- 8:16Speaker 4: when i'm you know, answering situation working with people, you know,
- 8:20Speaker 4: I want to make the place better than what I founded.
- 8:23Speaker 4: I want to make a positive impact on So I
- 8:27Speaker 4: think this team was already a phenomenal team, and I
- 8:30Speaker 4: think I can help get them to the next level.
- 8:33Speaker 4: So having that opportunity is something I look forward to
- 8:37Speaker 4: as well.
- 8:38Speaker 3: I'm kind of interested to see how he is and
- 8:39Speaker 3: Roy Robertson Harris play next to each other. He played
- 8:43Speaker 3: at Oregon with the Forest Buckner, who we now know
- 8:47Speaker 3: obviously is in Indianapolis, but he was drafted by the Niners,
- 8:49Speaker 3: and so is Buckner, and they played next to each
- 8:51Speaker 3: other in the same line in San Francisco. You know,
- 8:53Speaker 3: you've got that size, that height, the length, the ability
- 8:57Speaker 3: to block passes in the middle.
- 8:58Speaker 2: Well, Roy's that guy.
- 8:59Speaker 3: I mean he's six foot six and he's got the
- 9:01Speaker 3: long arms as well.
- 9:03Speaker 2: So you put those two guys next to each other
- 9:05Speaker 2: in the middle.
- 9:06Speaker 3: Longtime Jaguars observers will remember what it was like when
- 9:09Speaker 3: you had Marcus Stroud at six six and John Henderson
- 9:12Speaker 3: at six seven in the middle of the line. I
- 9:14Speaker 3: mean it was like having a coke machine next to
- 9:16Speaker 3: a Pepsi machine, right. I mean you had these two
- 9:18Speaker 3: big bodies and you had to move around them.
- 9:20Speaker 2: You had to go to the outside.
- 9:21Speaker 3: And now on the outside here you've got Trayvon who's
- 9:23Speaker 3: tremendous against the run, and Josh Walker, who's playmaker in
- 9:27Speaker 3: every aspect. But the defensive line took a big step
- 9:29Speaker 3: forward hitting a guy like Eric Armstead, and I think
- 9:32Speaker 3: if you get Devon Hamilton back to himself, now you've
- 9:36Speaker 3: got a game change up where you can completely flip
- 9:39Speaker 3: the script and move things around and create some habit.
- 9:43Speaker 1: I think one of the first things Armstead said when
- 9:45Speaker 1: he was talking to the media yesterday is he wants
- 9:46Speaker 1: to stop the run, which as we know, got away
- 9:48Speaker 1: from the Jaguars at the end of last season. But
- 9:50Speaker 1: they have the skill and talent level to be. You know,
- 9:54Speaker 1: at the beginning of the season, we saw they were
- 9:55Speaker 1: one of the better teams at that So hopefully with
- 9:57Speaker 1: that new defensive scheme with Ryan Nielsen and what they
- 9:59Speaker 1: can work out with these new players, it's going to
- 10:01Speaker 1: be a lot different.
- 10:02Speaker 3: Well, and listen, you know what you've got in Indianapolis
- 10:05Speaker 3: Jonathan Taylor, right, although the Jaguars have done a nice
- 10:07Speaker 3: job on him in recent matchups. And you're grateful that
- 10:11Speaker 3: Dereck Henry has moved on to Baltimore and you don't
- 10:13Speaker 3: have to face that runaway train. Although Joe Mixon now
- 10:17Speaker 3: is in Texas and he always gave this franchise problems
- 10:21Speaker 3: when he was with Cincinnati, so Houston has him, and
- 10:24Speaker 3: you just better buckle up because it seems every particular
- 10:27Speaker 3: Sunday afternoon in this division, what is jaj Spears kid
- 10:30Speaker 3: in Tennessee.
- 10:32Speaker 2: You better be able to stop the running.
- 10:33Speaker 1: This out global quarterbacks as well to also keep an
- 10:36Speaker 1: eye on so some of our other editions gave Davis
- 10:39Speaker 1: coming down from Buffalo, he said he was pretty excited
- 10:42Speaker 1: just you know, when he saw some of the team
- 10:44Speaker 1: names coming in. When he saw that Jacksonville was one
- 10:46Speaker 1: of the teams I called. That was kind of a
- 10:48Speaker 1: relief for him.
- 10:51Speaker 5: As soon as I heard Jacksonville, I was like, thank
- 10:53Speaker 5: god they call. I was like, thank god. I wanted
- 10:57Speaker 5: to come back to Florida. I wanted to be around
- 10:59Speaker 5: in guys that I knew, you know, coach that I loved,
- 11:02Speaker 5: and you know, the team's great. See, we can never we.
- 11:06Speaker 2: Can never beat him, you know what I mean.
- 11:09Speaker 5: So came, uh, came came here, and you know, soon
- 11:15Speaker 5: as soon as they sent it in, you know, Negoshans
- 11:17Speaker 5: winning and then boom. I was like, yeah, I'm a
- 11:18Speaker 5: Jaguar man. Pretty easy decision.
- 11:21Speaker 1: You know.
- 11:21Speaker 2: You look at him.
- 11:23Speaker 3: People wanted to compare him to Calvin Ridley. How is
- 11:26Speaker 3: he going to compare, you know, numerically catch his yards, touchdowns.
- 11:31Speaker 3: I would offer to them to look at it a
- 11:32Speaker 3: different way. Look at it as if he is Marvin
- 11:35Speaker 3: jones replacement two years ago. Marvin Jones, Christian Kirk, Zay Jones,
- 11:39Speaker 3: and Evan Ingram were the basis for which Trevor Lawrence,
- 11:43Speaker 3: you know, launched into that second half of the season
- 11:46Speaker 3: and really looked like that franchise quarterback that everybody expects
- 11:49Speaker 3: to see every single Sunday. Gabe is taller, he's got
- 11:53Speaker 3: longer arms. I don't know that he's faster, but he's
- 11:55Speaker 3: at least as fast as Marvin Jones is.
- 11:58Speaker 2: And it's been a clutch guy in Ball Tomorrow part
- 12:00Speaker 2: in Buffalo the last couple of years. So I think
- 12:03Speaker 2: that it is. I get it.
- 12:06Speaker 3: Calvin Ridley is one of those guys that can put
- 12:07Speaker 3: up fourteen hundred yards and I don't see that. I mean,
- 12:09Speaker 3: Gabe's never had a thousand. But if Gabe is a
- 12:12Speaker 3: seventy catch, a nine hundred yard, eight touchdown guy, well
- 12:18Speaker 3: then he's completely productive in this offense because we saw
- 12:22Speaker 3: Trevor Lawrence comfortable, willing to drop back, hit his back
- 12:25Speaker 3: foot and find who's ever open, not try to force
- 12:28Speaker 3: the ball to Calvin Ridley, which honestly, it felt like
- 12:30Speaker 3: at times last year they were trying to force feed
- 12:32Speaker 3: and that didn't work. So I think that they go
- 12:35Speaker 3: back a bit to twenty twenty two where it's simply
- 12:37Speaker 3: everybody is functioning in the offense. Whoever's opened, that's where
- 12:40Speaker 3: the ball is going.
- 12:41Speaker 1: And that's the best success we've seen so far. With
- 12:43Speaker 1: Trevor Lawrence obviously not feeling the need he needs to
- 12:45Speaker 1: go somewhere in particular, but having those options open to
- 12:48Speaker 1: him seems to open up the offense as a well.
- 12:50Speaker 3: And before we say that Gave Davis can't do what
- 12:54Speaker 3: Calvin did. He had twenty seven touchdowns in four seasons
- 12:57Speaker 3: and he wasn't the go to guy that was Stefan did.
- 13:00Speaker 3: So you've got a guy that's used to getting the.
- 13:02Speaker 2: Ball in the red zone.
- 13:04Speaker 3: He had the four touchdown game in the playoffs when
- 13:07Speaker 3: they played in the AFC Championship game in Kansas City
- 13:09Speaker 3: a few years ago. This is a guy who knows
- 13:10Speaker 3: how to make big plays and you bring him in now,
- 13:14Speaker 3: it'll be interesting to see how long it takes to
- 13:15Speaker 3: develop the chemistry with him, between Trevor and him, because
- 13:18Speaker 3: you know Christian, you knows that you know Evan, but
- 13:21Speaker 3: you get the sense that this is a guy who's
- 13:22Speaker 3: going to get open and even if he's not, because
- 13:25Speaker 3: fifty to fifty balls right, it looks like he's got
- 13:27Speaker 3: the size and the length to go take that away.
- 13:29Speaker 1: And we've talked about the team not really having that.
- 13:30Speaker 1: Right now, you know that big receiver that can go
- 13:32Speaker 1: up and take the ball from somebody else and that's
- 13:34Speaker 1: a new you know, talent and skill.
- 13:36Speaker 2: And an element that you're looking for is that tall receiver.
- 13:38Speaker 1: Absolutely all these players seem to have one thing in common.
- 13:41Speaker 1: They all come in from winning franchises, winning teams. They
- 13:43Speaker 1: know what that's going to take to win. Even Ron
- 13:46Speaker 1: Darby talking a little bit about his previous experience with
- 13:49Speaker 1: Doug and why that made him want to come and
- 13:51Speaker 1: play on.
- 13:51Speaker 6: This team, I'm miss saying it all day. He is
- 13:54Speaker 6: straight for a coach, Like that's all of you ask
- 13:57Speaker 6: for in a coach. You know, he gonna make sure
- 13:59Speaker 6: you work, You're gonna make sure you know things get
- 14:03Speaker 6: done the way and need to get done. He liked
- 14:04Speaker 6: to wins just as much as the players, and like
- 14:06Speaker 6: I trusted his schemes and we like he has success
- 14:09Speaker 6: like a great coach.
- 14:12Speaker 1: I have to remember in free agency, obviously these guys
- 14:14Speaker 1: can pick where they want to end up, and I'm
- 14:16Speaker 1: sure money is a big motivating factor of that, but
- 14:18Speaker 1: you also want to go somewhere where you're comfortable, you
- 14:20Speaker 1: feel like you're gonna win. There's other intangibles and you
- 14:23Speaker 1: like your coach, and Doug seems to be winning over
- 14:25Speaker 1: a lot of people in some of these interviews.
- 14:27Speaker 2: And the other factor there kai is scheme, right.
- 14:29Speaker 3: I mean, Ronald Darby is a press corner, and the
- 14:31Speaker 3: Jaguars didn't really have a press corner. Tyson Campbell is
- 14:35Speaker 3: not necessarily a press corner, so they're gonna have to
- 14:37Speaker 3: teach him to play that better than he did when
- 14:40Speaker 3: he was a rookie and they tried to with him.
- 14:42Speaker 2: Ronald Darby. That is to say, you've got a guy.
- 14:45Speaker 3: That knows the scheme that's going to come in and
- 14:47Speaker 3: do exactly what Ryan Nielsen wants to get done. He's
- 14:50Speaker 3: thirty years old, he's a guy who's won. Before you
- 14:53Speaker 3: mentioned he was with Doug and won a championship. So
- 14:55Speaker 3: that's why you think, all right, in the first or
- 14:57Speaker 3: second round, if one of those corners is available, we
- 14:59Speaker 3: all know the names, you've got to go get yourself
- 15:02Speaker 3: one of those. So they can learn from Ronald Darby
- 15:05Speaker 3: how to play the position at the NFL level and
- 15:08Speaker 3: how to play this scheme.
- 15:10Speaker 1: I'm so excited to see what Ryan Neilson actually does
- 15:12Speaker 1: with all this, because we're getting all these new parts.
- 15:13Speaker 1: It's looking like a completely different situation. Obviously, we'll have
- 15:16Speaker 1: to see what that looks like in training camp, but
- 15:18Speaker 1: it's just gonna be a totally different vibe from the team.
- 15:20Speaker 3: Yeah, I would imagine that Ryan's having a little trouble sleeping.
- 15:23Speaker 3: He's so excited about some of these guys. Right when
- 15:25Speaker 3: you walk in and you've got Josh Allen and Trey
- 15:27Speaker 3: Von Walker twenty seven and a half sacks, the most
- 15:29Speaker 3: productive one to two tandem in the league last year.
- 15:32Speaker 3: Now you get some strength up front, not just a
- 15:34Speaker 3: little strength, but a big, strong guy.
- 15:37Speaker 2: If they could push.
- 15:37Speaker 3: The pocket and force guys outside, now you can get
- 15:40Speaker 3: more production. Quarterbacks are going to be jumping, They're going
- 15:42Speaker 3: to throw the ball up, which means there's more opportunity
- 15:44Speaker 3: for turnovers and takeaways. We didn't talk about Darnell Savage
- 15:47Speaker 3: coming in and what that means for the rest of
- 15:50Speaker 3: the guys on the back end.
- 15:51Speaker 2: There there's some versatility.
- 15:53Speaker 3: Now there's some question mark still, right, but there's enough
- 15:57Speaker 3: pieces that he can go out and do what he
- 15:58Speaker 3: wants to do.
- 15:59Speaker 1: There's enough and talent there to hold it together. But
- 16:01Speaker 1: then also the young guys are going to get a chance,
- 16:03Speaker 1: right if it's Antonio Johnson or whoever it might be.
- 16:05Speaker 1: On the back end to kind of see what they're
- 16:06Speaker 1: going to be able to contribute going forward. Even Andre Cisco,
- 16:08Speaker 1: some of tho people are going to Tyson Campbell, whether
- 16:10Speaker 1: you're going to want to resign them long term? Is
- 16:12Speaker 1: there big prove of years for them.
- 16:13Speaker 3: The name that you said that has the most excited
- 16:15Speaker 3: Antonio Johnson, because we saw him in training camp last
- 16:18Speaker 3: year and you just you saw a guy who was
- 16:20Speaker 3: comfortable right just coming out of Texas, a m was
- 16:23Speaker 3: comfortable on the field with what they asked him to do.
- 16:25Speaker 3: He had the ankle injury and just wasn't healthy. But
- 16:28Speaker 3: late in the year he was blitzing right, he was
- 16:31Speaker 3: playing back in coverage. He could do anything you want
- 16:33Speaker 3: him to do. He's big, he's fast, He's got great length,
- 16:36Speaker 3: which means that he is a problem for smaller receivers,
- 16:39Speaker 3: and he can step up and play the run.
- 16:40Speaker 2: He's going to be on the field a lot.
- 16:42Speaker 1: A good young talent for sure. Stay with us on
- 16:45Speaker 1: jag Zam. We will be back and we'll answer some
- 16:47Speaker 1: of our fan questions after the right Daguars fans ere
- 17:05Speaker 1: up at fanatics dot com and all the latest drag
- 17:07Speaker 1: styles you can shop now and get today's special offer
- 17:09Speaker 1: fanatics dot Com officially licensed everything. We don't have our
- 17:20Speaker 1: guy with us today, We're going to do our best
- 17:22Speaker 1: ozone impression. We've try to answer some of these ozone
- 17:24Speaker 1: questions presented by fanatics today because obviously viewer questions do
- 17:28Speaker 1: not halt just because Joan Oser is out at the beach.
- 17:30Speaker 2: So people have things to.
- 17:31Speaker 1: Say, people have things to say, people have questions. We're
- 17:33Speaker 1: going to start out with Joel from Jacksonville says last season,
- 17:38Speaker 1: there were several times where the coaches felt that an
- 17:40Speaker 1: injured Lawrence with limited practice was a better choice than
- 17:43Speaker 1: backup quarterback C. J. Betheart. So does the addition of
- 17:45Speaker 1: Jones change those and any future decisions? Also, since Jones
- 17:49Speaker 1: is that first round pick and they still have the
- 17:51Speaker 1: fifth year option with him. So for me, I'm thinking
- 17:54Speaker 1: this is kind of low risk, high reward right with
- 17:58Speaker 1: Mac because what he went through in New England was
- 18:00Speaker 1: not great. You know, so many different offensive coordinators, one
- 18:03Speaker 1: of which was not an offensive coordinator at all, and
- 18:06Speaker 1: it was a tough situation.
- 18:07Speaker 2: So well, let's start with the back end of the question.
- 18:09Speaker 3: Because they traded for Mac Jones, Because because they traded
- 18:12Speaker 3: for him.
- 18:13Speaker 2: His contract comes with him, so they.
- 18:15Speaker 3: Do have the fifth year option, but the fifth year
- 18:16Speaker 3: option for a quarterback, and I think I looked at
- 18:18Speaker 3: his numbers something north of twenty million dollars, so you're
- 18:23Speaker 3: probably not going to use that now.
- 18:26Speaker 2: Do I think it's an upgrade?
- 18:27Speaker 3: Yeah, he's a young, smart quarterback who's had success as
- 18:30Speaker 3: a starter in this league. Things went south, but you
- 18:33Speaker 3: know when you look at the Patriots and you covered
- 18:35Speaker 3: the Patriots, so you know this wasn't the same Patriots team.
- 18:38Speaker 3: It wasn't like he had the same talent level around him.
- 18:42Speaker 3: They were grabbing receivers in and out, trying to find
- 18:45Speaker 3: running back combinations that worked. I think the long short
- 18:49Speaker 3: of it is you're taking a flyer on a talented,
- 18:51Speaker 3: smart quarterback. You're bringing him home and hoping that the
- 18:55Speaker 3: surroundings helping him get comfortable. And we heard him last
- 18:58Speaker 3: week when he was here talk about getting the trained
- 19:01Speaker 3: back on the track, so he's obviously motivated to come
- 19:04Speaker 3: in to a quarterback friendly system and see if he
- 19:07Speaker 3: can become the best version of himself.
- 19:10Speaker 1: This is something to me where if you can rebuild
- 19:12Speaker 1: his confidence, you can get something out of him, and.
- 19:14Speaker 3: Without a doubt Doug Peter now if you mean get
- 19:16Speaker 3: something out of him on the field or perhaps be
- 19:19Speaker 3: able to convert him into.
- 19:21Speaker 2: A draft pick.
- 19:23Speaker 1: I'm saying it based off knowing what the NFL is currently,
- 19:26Speaker 1: as the many games as they play, your backup can
- 19:28Speaker 1: be a huge difference. We've seen it on several different
- 19:31Speaker 1: teams last year. I mean the Browns, the Bengals. We
- 19:33Speaker 1: saw it's that can play a role. If Trevor missus
- 19:37Speaker 1: one or two games, that can be the difference. We
- 19:39Speaker 1: would have made the playoffs if you win some of
- 19:40Speaker 1: those games. So I think that Mac can play a
- 19:44Speaker 1: huge role being given that confidence playing for a former
- 19:47Speaker 1: quarterback like Doug Peterson because a lot of Mac Jones's issues.
- 19:50Speaker 1: The back end of that, we're just having no confidence
- 19:53Speaker 1: in yourself. When you're going out there as a quarterback
- 19:54Speaker 1: and you don't think you can do it, you're not
- 19:56Speaker 1: going to be successful.
- 19:57Speaker 3: He's got more experience than C. J. Bethard, even though
- 19:59Speaker 3: Bethant's been in the game longer, he was a starter.
- 20:01Speaker 3: Bethard has you know, twelve thirteen starts under his career.
- 20:05Speaker 3: This guy has started for two and a half seasons
- 20:07Speaker 3: in the NFL. He was a first round pick for
- 20:09Speaker 3: a reason. He was hyper productive at the top of
- 20:12Speaker 3: the food chain in college football. I mentioned smart and
- 20:16Speaker 3: he was a four to zero, you know, academic All American.
- 20:18Speaker 3: So you bring him in and give him a chance
- 20:20Speaker 3: to supplant. He's going to cost more than CJ. Bethard,
- 20:24Speaker 3: but he's a guy that you can perhaps, as we mentioned,
- 20:27Speaker 3: reclaim and have a guy on the field that can
- 20:29Speaker 3: get it done. And then you don't know what the
- 20:31Speaker 3: market does. Maybe you've got him for two years, or
- 20:33Speaker 3: maybe you get him to a year or two of
- 20:35Speaker 3: the contract and someone comes and says, I'll give you
- 20:37Speaker 3: a third round pick. I need a quarterback, and then
- 20:39Speaker 3: maybe it works out best for everybody.
- 20:41Speaker 1: An intriguing option for sir. We'll see what Doug Peterson
- 20:43Speaker 1: can kind of work with mac. Another question from Fanatics
- 20:48Speaker 1: fan Questions for ozone mailbag is going to be Nick
- 20:50Speaker 1: from the Palm Coast. He says, with our new defensive scheme,
- 20:53Speaker 1: who covers Ridley two times a year? Do we just
- 20:55Speaker 1: get up on the line of play physical with him
- 20:57Speaker 1: because that's shown to be less productive for him when
- 20:59Speaker 1: he's been harassed a little bit at the line.
- 21:02Speaker 3: Well, Ryan Nielsen plays press right and press meansor at
- 21:06Speaker 3: the line harassing. I would think that this would be
- 21:08Speaker 3: Tyson Campbell, not only because he's the best corner the
- 21:12Speaker 3: Jaguars have right now, but we watched and we talked
- 21:14Speaker 3: a lot about watching Calvin Ridley and Tyson Campbell lined
- 21:18Speaker 3: up one on one against each other and how much
- 21:20Speaker 3: fun it was. Anyone who was here at the open
- 21:22Speaker 3: training camp practices last year remembers watching those two. And
- 21:26Speaker 3: that was of course Calvin at his peak, when he
- 21:28Speaker 3: was playing so well in training camp, when all eyes
- 21:30Speaker 3: were on him, all cameras were trained on zero there.
- 21:34Speaker 2: So I would think Tyson Campbell because he knows him.
- 21:36Speaker 3: He practiced against him every day last year and they
- 21:39Speaker 3: were some of the most fun moments during training camp.
- 21:41Speaker 3: Now they could draft somebody, right, and if they do,
- 21:44Speaker 3: give him the opportunity, but I would think Tyson would
- 21:48Speaker 3: be the guy.
- 21:48Speaker 1: Curious ligning up with Hopkins. It's like pick your poison
- 21:51Speaker 1: a little bit. Then, Also, how the Titans end up
- 21:52Speaker 1: using him, because Calvin talked I think a little bit
- 21:55Speaker 1: in his press conference saying he didn't really get to
- 21:57Speaker 1: play different positions while he was hearing I mean he
- 21:59Speaker 1: kind of just you know, went deep most of the
- 22:02Speaker 1: time on the edges, didn't crossover. I mean, Christian Kirk's
- 22:04Speaker 1: the slot guy here, so he wasn't going to get
- 22:06Speaker 1: those opportunities. But maybe they'll utilize him.
- 22:08Speaker 2: In the figure it out.
- 22:09Speaker 3: You know another guy that I think has the ability
- 22:10Speaker 3: to play a little bit of corner and as a nickel,
- 22:13Speaker 3: he might and that is Antonio Johnson. And he's got
- 22:16Speaker 3: the length and especially the strength to play at the
- 22:19Speaker 3: line of scrimmage, to play a bit of press.
- 22:21Speaker 2: Well, that would be fun.
- 22:22Speaker 3: Calvin would probably really not enjoy the afternoon with Antonio Johnson,
- 22:27Speaker 3: as long and lanky as he is in his face
- 22:30Speaker 3: the whole game, harassing him at the line of scrimmage.
- 22:33Speaker 1: Here's hoping. I'm sure that's exactly what Jaguars are hoping happens.
- 22:36Speaker 1: Stay with us here on Jags Aam. We're gonna take
- 22:38Speaker 1: a quick break and talk about what we're coming up
- 22:40Speaker 1: the rest of the week. Join us on Tuesday, April sixteenth,
- 22:54Speaker 1: from six thirty to eight thirty at EverBank Stadium for
- 22:57Speaker 1: the be Inspired by Jags Jobs event presented by the
- 23:00Speaker 1: Florida Lottery. You can register now at Jaguars dot Com
- 23:03Speaker 1: slash Bright futures. We're looking forward to the draft. Of course,
- 23:11Speaker 1: you're heading to Detroit this year.
- 23:13Speaker 2: Going to Detroit, see if they can do as good
- 23:15Speaker 2: a job. Kansas City was outstanding last year.
- 23:18Speaker 1: Impartial to Kansas City, I am so.
- 23:19Speaker 3: I'll tell you that the place I think that's done
- 23:20Speaker 3: the best job, but the draft is Nashville.
- 23:22Speaker 2: Okay, it was there in twenty nineteen that it was
- 23:24Speaker 2: like the party year that was the Josh Allen Draft.
- 23:26Speaker 3: If you've ever been to Nashville, you know Broadway. They
- 23:29Speaker 3: had cameras strung all the way up by the hockey arena.
- 23:31Speaker 3: They're doing all the way down to the very end
- 23:33Speaker 3: of Broadway, running back and forth. Nashville is just a
- 23:36Speaker 3: great city to go and have a good time in.
- 23:38Speaker 3: And they did an amazing job. Kansas City wasn't that
- 23:41Speaker 3: far behind. And yes, I am impartial, No, I'm sorry partial.
- 23:44Speaker 3: I am partial to Kansas City because it's home. But
- 23:48Speaker 3: they did an exceptional job. And of course, you know
- 23:50Speaker 3: when you walk out with the trophy to start every
- 23:53Speaker 3: night and the crowd.
- 23:54Speaker 2: Goes wild, it gives a a vibe that most places
- 23:56Speaker 2: don't have.
- 23:57Speaker 1: Absolutely, Detroit will try. We'll see what they can put together.
- 24:00Speaker 2: They had a really good year.
- 24:00Speaker 1: It's gonna be good, it's gonna be eventful no matter what.
- 24:03Speaker 1: Just their fan base alone, I'm sure, so that's exciting.
- 24:05Speaker 1: We'll be of course, looking ahead the next couple of weeks,
- 24:07Speaker 1: giving you an idea of where the Jaguars may go
- 24:10Speaker 1: with their draft picks. But thanks for joining us on Jagsam.
- 24:12Speaker 1: We'll see you again next week.
