- 0:36SPEAKER_00: Hey, who's got the best CG leader?
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: Anyone feel uh some type of way for their for their CG leader?
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: Okay, yeah, there we go.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: There we go.
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: We love that.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: Notice how uh all of those crowds, and none of them were for Christian or Trent, um, which is just crazy.
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: Um but I'm just kidding.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: I love you guys, Christian and Trent.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: Hey, those are my boys, okay?
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: I can make fun of my boys.
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: Anyway, um, yeah, guys, we absolutely love uh connection groups, love our leaders.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: Um so if you haven't gotten into one of those, man, tonight would be a great night uh to do that.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: You know, it's like what they say, man, uh the best time to plant a tree was like uh 30 years ago.
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: Uh the next best time is like today.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: Uh that's the same thing with connection groups.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: Best time to join a connection group was last week, second best tonight.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: Okay, so let's do it.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: Um it's gonna be uh a good time.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: Hey, we're gonna jump into uh our new series here tonight, but hey, before we do that, does anyone remember like the starter pack trend of like 2014?
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: Okay, I I realize I'm a little bit older, um, but no, no one remembers starter pack trend.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: Okay, basically, here's what it is.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: Back in 2014, um, and apparently back in like 2025, um, basically what would happen is they'd post this thing on like uh back then it was called Twitter um and uh Instagram, and it's like, hey, if you had to sum yourself up or some sum up this uh whole like category of people with like these four things, this is what it would be.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: Okay, so like for example, man, country music, it's like if you had to sum up country music in a starter pack, it'd be Dolly Parton, Dolly Parton, Dolly Parton, and then Dolly Parton.
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: Okay, it's like man, we're gonna miss Dolly Parton a lot.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: Seriously.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: I man, I the girls tried to get me with like the oh my gosh, did you hear Dodd?
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: I already heard.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: I have four sisters, okay?
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: They texted me the second they got the notification.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: We were crying in the club, uh, you know, for Dolly.
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: So um, but seriously, like, man, starter pack for country, it'd be like Alan Jackson, actual, you know, Dolly Parton, George Strait, Willie Nelson.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: It's like, man, if you're getting into uh country music, listen to those guys, okay?
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: Uh I saw this one uh on the internet.
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: Um basic uh white girl in the fall starter pack.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, guys, PSL just came back at Starbucks, okay?
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: It's like, man, you're catching all the girls in Ug Boots, uh, some uh Starbucks frap at uh Lululemon, and the only thing on the radio is Ed Sheeran, okay?
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: Okay, we've got some Ed fans in the room uh tonight.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: So good, and man, I thought this one, this next one is funny because we all know someone who's like Edman.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: I take JROTC way too serious, starter pack.
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: Okay, it's like the kid who runs in the hallways in school.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: Uh he's got the shoes from 1980, can barely grow anything as for a mustache.
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: Um, which hey, no shade if you can't grow uh, you know, hair on your face.
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: I can't either.
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: Okay, there's a reason I'm always fresh shaved, got the camo uh backpack.
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: And I mean, as I was going throughout this, I was like, dude, this is great.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: I literally love this trend.
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: Why can't we do this more often?
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: And I was like, wait, nothing is holding me back from doing this.
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: So me and my friend were like, could we make starter packs for the salt staff?
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: Of course we could.
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: Okay, so uh for Ashley who made a starter pack, it's like, man, she only she's gonna talk about this CrossFit, uh K-pop, specifically BTS, the fact that she's from Iowa, and uh also you can hear from anywhere in the room because she laughs, okay?
- 3:35SPEAKER_00: That's literally her back there laughing.
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: Um you can hear it.
- 3:39SPEAKER_00: And then, of course, uh we all love Olivia.
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: And it's like, man, anything about Olivia is matcha.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: It's like, where's the best matcha in town?
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: Uh talk to Olivia.
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: Man, she went to uh Texas Tech, uh, guns up.
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: Uh she's getting married.
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, there's a good chance if you talk to her, two minutes.
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: She's married, and then she was in a sorority uh as well.
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: So it's like, man, Kyle Omega.
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: Wait, what is it?
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: Is it this?
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: Come on, let's go.
- 3:59SPEAKER_00: Uh we love our Kyle Omega in the room.
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: Um but so hey guys, quick, man, turn to someone next to you.
- 4:04SPEAKER_00: It's like, man, if you had a starter pack, what would it be?
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: Okay, what would it be?
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: Are we going uh you know, basic cargo shorts?
- 4:09SPEAKER_00: It's like if you had a starter pack, what would it be?
- 4:11SPEAKER_00: Tell the person next to you.
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: Okay, okay.
- 4:21SPEAKER_00: Enough time, enough time, yep.
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: The starter packs, everybody.
- 4:27SPEAKER_00: Yep, it's okay.
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 4:30SPEAKER_00: Here we go, guys.
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: We can we can bring it back in.
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: I'm sure there's sure there's some great starter packs out there.
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: Okay, here we go, guys.
- 4:38SPEAKER_00: I shouldn't have brought that up.
- 4:39SPEAKER_00: Okay, shouldn't have asked you to start talking uh because we'll never we'll never get on um with the night.
- 4:43SPEAKER_00: But hey guys, here's the reason that uh that I bring starter packs up.
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: It's like, why are you talking about 2014, Owen?
- 4:49SPEAKER_00: Uh uh it makes you sound old.
- 4:50SPEAKER_00: Um but here's the reason is we're starting a new uh new series tonight.
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: It's called Essentials or the Essentials of Salt Company, okay?
- 4:58SPEAKER_00: What is absolutely essential?
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: Like if there's a starter pack to Salt Company, what would it be?
- 5:03SPEAKER_00: Man, it would be what we are gonna go through over the next three weeks.
- 5:07SPEAKER_00: What is essential in Salt Company, and more importantly, what is essential in helping you guys have the most successful four years in college that you can.
- 5:15SPEAKER_00: Okay, because Olivia might be thriving off of matcha and uh in a nice looking Instagram, but guys, it's gonna take a lot more for you guys to be successful, trust me.
- 5:23SPEAKER_00: Okay?
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: We believe that if the essentials are present in your life, man, you're gonna set yourself up well for college.
- 5:31SPEAKER_00: Okay, over the next three weeks, we're gonna take a look at how being rooted in the Bible, consistently in community, and then passionately on mission for Jesus, why that is essential for Salt Company and for you.
- 5:43SPEAKER_00: Tonight you can open up your Bibles as we talk about the Bible being an essential component for every believer in this room tonight.
- 5:51SPEAKER_00: Guys, I hope to show you tonight three things about the Bible and why it should and why you should ground your lives on this book.
- 6:00SPEAKER_00: Okay, Psalm 1 is where we're gonna be at.
- 6:02SPEAKER_00: One of my favorite verses that uh I have tonight for us.
- 6:08SPEAKER_00: I say if there's one piece of scripture that you're gonna memorize or pray over, it's like, man, I this one would be a great one to do it last year.
- 6:14SPEAKER_00: Man, my D group Kyle and Zach, they could they could you know shoot this thing off the cuff.
- 6:19SPEAKER_00: Um that's how much they know it, right, gentlemen, we still got that.
- 6:22SPEAKER_00: Certainly, certainly.
- 6:23SPEAKER_00: Those are my boys.
- 6:24SPEAKER_00: Okay, anyways, guys, we got it.
- 6:26SPEAKER_00: Psalm one, we we good for tonight?
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: Okay, let's do it.
- 6:29SPEAKER_00: Here's what it says in Psalm 1, verse 1.
- 6:31SPEAKER_00: We're starting right at the front.
- 6:33SPEAKER_00: It says this how happy is the one who does not walk in the advice of the wicked, or stand in the pathway with sinners, or sit in the company of mockers.
- 6:41SPEAKER_00: Instead, his delight is in the Lord's instruction, and he meditates on it day and night.
- 6:46SPEAKER_00: He's like a tree planted beside flowing streams that bears its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither.
- 6:53SPEAKER_00: Whatever he does, he prospers.
- 6:56SPEAKER_00: So here it is.
- 6:57SPEAKER_00: Here's the first thing that I want you to see that see tonight about the Bible is that the Bible makes you both happy and it makes you strong.
- 7:05SPEAKER_00: Okay, that first one, happiness.
- 7:07SPEAKER_00: Certainly like something that everyone wants in this life, okay?
- 7:10SPEAKER_00: It's like what fuels uh most of our decisions.
- 7:13SPEAKER_00: It's what everyone is trying to get.
- 7:15SPEAKER_00: Um it's like the decisions we make in the background, it's like, man, what's gonna make me happy?
- 7:18SPEAKER_00: Okay, do I eat at Eagle's Landing or do I go to Chick-fil-A?
- 7:21SPEAKER_00: It's like Chick-fil-A, that's easy, okay?
- 7:23SPEAKER_00: Uh that's what's gonna make you most happy.
- 7:24SPEAKER_00: It's like, do I sit next to this person in class, this girl in class?
- 7:27SPEAKER_00: Because maybe you know in four years she's gonna marry me.
- 7:29SPEAKER_00: Uh there's always uh there's always motive behind these decisions.
- 7:32SPEAKER_00: It's like, should I sign up for an 8 a.m.
- 7:35SPEAKER_00: class?
- 7:35SPEAKER_00: Uh, because it sounds great.
- 7:36SPEAKER_00: It's like, man, my uh I'm gonna create good habits, uh, my studio is gonna be consistent.
- 7:41SPEAKER_00: It's like, guys, don't do that.
- 7:42SPEAKER_00: You skip that class once, you will never go back.
- 7:44SPEAKER_00: Okay, trust me.
- 7:45SPEAKER_00: Some of you have already made that fatal decision uh already this semester.
- 7:49SPEAKER_00: Guys, our whole lives are built off of seeking happiness in this life.
- 7:54SPEAKER_00: Okay, what David is saying in this psalm, in what he writes, is that happiness is not found in the things of this world, but rather it's found in the word of God.
- 8:04SPEAKER_00: Okay, now don't get me wrong, okay?
- 8:06SPEAKER_00: There is absolutely nothing wrong with Chick-fil-A, finding a spouse, and having a consistent sleep schedule.
- 8:10SPEAKER_00: I would say those are probably great things.
- 8:12SPEAKER_00: But at the end of the day, those things are ultimate compared to God's word.
- 8:17SPEAKER_00: The word of God is ultimate over your life.
- 8:21SPEAKER_00: I mean, his word, his instruction, the promises that he has in that book, the promises that he has spoken to you will bring happiness.
- 8:31SPEAKER_00: Psalm shows us this.
- 8:33SPEAKER_00: This is instead his delight.
- 8:36SPEAKER_00: How happy is a man.
- 8:37SPEAKER_00: Other versions say, how blessed, right?
- 8:39SPEAKER_00: How happy is this guy who meditates on the Lord's instruction day and night, the man or the woman of God who delights in the law of the Lord.
- 8:50SPEAKER_00: Right, guys, because happiness, man, happiness in Jesus.
- 8:52SPEAKER_00: A lot of people think those things mutually exclusive, okay?
- 8:55SPEAKER_00: If we took uh any sort of classes like, man, mutually exclusive, they don't touch, okay?
- 8:59SPEAKER_00: But I would actually argue otherwise that they're almost mutually inclusive.
- 9:04SPEAKER_00: When one happens, the other follows.
- 9:06SPEAKER_00: When we meditate deeply on God's word and the Lords of the Word, our heart they find contentment and they find joy in its guidance, in what it has to say.
- 9:18SPEAKER_00: The word that's used there in verse one is I mean, happy.
- 9:21SPEAKER_00: Happy.
- 9:22SPEAKER_00: And it's not like this superficial feeling of excitement or like arousal or a short burst of joy.
- 9:28SPEAKER_00: I mean, which are feelings of happiness, rather, it's a sustained happiness.
- 9:32SPEAKER_00: It's a happiness that not only fills your physical body, but it fills your very soul.
- 9:37SPEAKER_00: Okay, you guys need to hear this tonight.
- 9:40SPEAKER_00: It's that the deep desire and the longingness for happiness is not dependent on our circumstance in life, but rather it's dependent on what we are rooted in.
- 9:49SPEAKER_00: Okay, it's not dependent on the circumstance in our life, but what we are rooted in.
- 9:55SPEAKER_00: Guys, what again, what David does here.
- 9:57SPEAKER_00: I mean, he gives us this illustration of a tree for us, okay?
- 10:00SPEAKER_00: I'm not the smartest guy ever.
- 10:01SPEAKER_00: I like uh I'm I'm a visual learner, okay?
- 10:03SPEAKER_00: Anyone else, visual learners?
- 10:04SPEAKER_00: It's like, yep, my people, great.
- 10:06SPEAKER_00: Uh man, I'm a visual learner.
- 10:07SPEAKER_00: So what does he do?
- 10:08SPEAKER_00: I appreciate what he does here.
- 10:09SPEAKER_00: Man, verse 3 says, he is like a tree planted beside flowing streams of water.
- 10:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah, guys, I don't know if you've been uh if you've ever planted um a tree alone right in the middle of you know uh West Texas, no water ever.
- 10:23SPEAKER_00: It's like I don't know if you've ever done that before, but it's hard.
- 10:26SPEAKER_00: Okay, it's really hard to do that when you plant a tree not by water, or if you don't uh if you don't water it like consistently.
- 10:33SPEAKER_00: Okay, my dad did that growing up.
- 10:35SPEAKER_00: He was out there every single day.
- 10:36SPEAKER_00: Okay, every single day he had to water that thing, or it wasn't gonna grow right.
- 10:39SPEAKER_00: He had to stick a stick a pole up in it just to like keep it up.
- 10:42SPEAKER_00: Any like strong wind would come in, it'd blow it right over.
- 10:46SPEAKER_00: Man, but the tree of Psalm 1 is is not like that.
- 10:50SPEAKER_00: It's connected deeply into the streams that are around it.
- 10:54SPEAKER_00: It digs deep roots into the soil and it consistently is pulling nutrients from the stream that is by it.
- 11:01SPEAKER_00: Okay, imagine if you had an IV of Coke Zero at every single moment in your life, okay, you'd be like, this is the best.
- 11:06SPEAKER_00: This is what I imagine this tree feeling like.
- 11:08SPEAKER_00: Okay?
- 11:09SPEAKER_00: Right next to the source of life.
- 11:12SPEAKER_00: Our happiness is not defined by the status of our situation, right?
- 11:17SPEAKER_00: It doesn't matter who we marry, what car we drive, the house we live in, but rather it's defined by what or rather who we are connected to.
- 11:27SPEAKER_00: Because when when we as believers, okay, when we're connected directly to the source of life, we find happiness.
- 11:34SPEAKER_00: Again, it's not sporadic.
- 11:36SPEAKER_00: It it doesn't come and go, it's not unreliable, it's a happiness that lasts a lifetime.
- 11:42SPEAKER_00: Not five minutes, not five seconds, not five minutes, but it lasts five decades.
- 11:46SPEAKER_00: A joy and a satisfaction of our soul that can only be found one place.
- 11:51SPEAKER_00: That's in the Lord.
- 11:53SPEAKER_00: Okay, not only does being connected to God through his word make us happy, but there's also that second one, it makes us strong.
- 12:01SPEAKER_00: Okay, if we finish the rest of verse 3, we've already read a little bit.
- 12:04SPEAKER_00: Go see what I mean by this.
- 12:05SPEAKER_00: See if you can find it when we read it.
- 12:07SPEAKER_00: It says he is like a tree planted beside flowing streams that bears its fruit in its season.
- 12:12SPEAKER_00: Its leaf does not wither, it never dies.
- 12:15SPEAKER_00: Whatever he does prospers.
- 12:18SPEAKER_00: Okay, when when I first moved to Texas, okay, I moved here uh a year and some change ago, year and a half.
- 12:24SPEAKER_00: Um, literally the biggest thing that I noticed was like the day I moved in, there was like a category five hurricane that came through Dan.
- 12:30SPEAKER_00: Okay, that's what it felt like to me.
- 12:32SPEAKER_00: Okay, I have never experienced anything like this.
- 12:34SPEAKER_00: It was just a different level of fear, okay?
- 12:36SPEAKER_00: I was literally standing uh right right outside my window, like an old man, just like looking out.
- 12:41SPEAKER_00: I'm like, is this normal?
- 12:42SPEAKER_00: You know, I'm I'm pulling up uh the YouTube like storm chaser guys, and it's like, hey, Dan, if you you know have a bathtub, uh anything, it's like you should get in it.
- 12:49SPEAKER_00: Uh not me, okay.
- 12:50SPEAKER_00: I'm standing right next to the window, um, which probably I'm not um suggesting at all.
- 12:55SPEAKER_00: But for real, this is like 75 mile-an hour winds, 100 mile-an hour winds.
- 12:59SPEAKER_00: And I'm just just looking at it, and I'm looking down at my car that's parked outside.
- 13:02SPEAKER_00: I said, if that tree snaps, uh my car's gone, okay?
- 13:04SPEAKER_00: I don't got you know complete coverage all over my car, my car's old.
- 13:08SPEAKER_00: Low-key I was kind of wishing, like, if that tree falls, you know, I might get some insurance money.
- 13:11SPEAKER_00: Uh anyway, anyway, that that that's not the that's not the point of it.
- 13:14SPEAKER_00: But I'm looking at this tree.
- 13:15SPEAKER_00: That's like the and these trees that are just going back and forth with the wind.
- 13:20SPEAKER_00: 100 miles an hour.
- 13:21SPEAKER_00: Never seen it in my life, and not one of them got tossed up.
- 13:25SPEAKER_00: Not a single one.
- 13:28SPEAKER_00: Because it man, these trees that were planted, I mean they got they dug deep roots.
- 13:33SPEAKER_00: Okay, this is what the life of someone who digs deep roots is like they are strong.
- 13:39SPEAKER_00: They are like a tree that is planted firmly in the ground.
- 13:42SPEAKER_00: Okay, you can't dig this thing up.
- 13:43SPEAKER_00: Why?
- 13:44SPEAKER_00: Because it's it's its roots go deep and it goes wide.
- 13:49SPEAKER_00: And when life is blowing mile 100 mile an hour wind at you, man, these trees they lean on their roots.
- 13:56SPEAKER_00: We're the same way.
- 13:58SPEAKER_00: When the hard season of life comes, what do we lean on?
- 14:02SPEAKER_00: For some of you are not, I'd imagine that this season that you're feeling like, it's like, man, I'm in a monsoon.
- 14:09SPEAKER_00: I've got so much homework, I can't catch a break.
- 14:12SPEAKER_00: I can't sleep because it's hot in my dorm.
- 14:14SPEAKER_00: My my roommate won't shut up.
- 14:16SPEAKER_00: It's like, man, being tossed and fro from the wind because you have no roots in your life.
- 14:21SPEAKER_00: Some of you are like, like looking next to the person next to you, it's like, hey, you're my roommate, by the way, you won't shut up.
- 14:25SPEAKER_00: Uh anyway.
- 14:27SPEAKER_00: It's like, man, you guys are being tossed by the wind and have no roots in your life.
- 14:32SPEAKER_00: Okay, the man or the woman of God has their roots planted firmly and they stay planted.
- 14:39SPEAKER_00: I mean, one pastor he says it like this.
- 14:41SPEAKER_00: He says, We feast on the Bible on our best days so we can survive on it on our worst.
- 14:48SPEAKER_00: Guys, hear me say hear me say this is that the Bible is a river that will never run dry.
- 14:53SPEAKER_00: It will never leave you, forsake you.
- 14:55SPEAKER_00: It's something that will always be there in your life, a place that you want to find deep roots next to.
- 15:00SPEAKER_00: Okay, because when you're in a difficult season, man, it's the truth that's found in this Bible that will help you find hope when you're in a hospital, okay?
- 15:08SPEAKER_00: It'll help you sing when you're going through a storm.
- 15:11SPEAKER_00: It'll give you comfort when you feel like there's chaos surrounding you.
- 15:14SPEAKER_00: It'll help you feel peace in your most greatest pain.
- 15:19SPEAKER_00: It's the words of God that we're able to lean on when the when the walls of life feel like they're crashing in on us.
- 15:26SPEAKER_00: This is why the Bible is absolutely essential.
- 15:28SPEAKER_00: Essential for us as a ministry, but for you guys as students.
- 15:32SPEAKER_00: So we find both happiness and strength in the Bible.
- 15:36SPEAKER_00: Okay, let us keep chugging along.
- 15:38SPEAKER_00: Number one, the Bible makes us happy and strong.
- 15:40SPEAKER_00: That leads us to the second thing is that this the Bible shapes us with truth.
- 15:45SPEAKER_00: Shapes us with truth.
- 15:46SPEAKER_00: Look at me what it says in John 17.
- 15:49SPEAKER_00: Okay, in this section of scripture that we're gonna read, Jesus is speaking, uh rather rather, Jesus is praying uh at this time, and there's these are some of the last days that Jesus is on earth doing ministry.
- 16:00SPEAKER_00: Okay, he's preparing uh to be captured, to be crucified.
- 16:03SPEAKER_00: Uh, and these are some of the last days that he hears and what he's doing, he's praying.
- 16:06SPEAKER_00: Okay, he's praying for his disciples, for the people that he knows most, that they would continue on till the end, that it would be in unity, that they would love each other, that they would share the gospel, that they would uh just be one body.
- 16:16SPEAKER_00: And this is what Jesus is praying.
- 16:18SPEAKER_00: John 17, 7.
- 16:20SPEAKER_00: Uh he's praying something over his disciples, and he's praying this exact thing over us today.
- 16:26SPEAKER_00: He says, Sanctify them by the truth.
- 16:29SPEAKER_00: Your word is truth.
- 16:31SPEAKER_00: Sanctify, man, be be more like Jesus.
- 16:33SPEAKER_00: That's what that word means.
- 16:34SPEAKER_00: Okay, it's a pretty churchy word, sanctification, be more like Jesus.
- 16:37SPEAKER_00: He says, Sanctify them by the truth, your word is truth.
- 16:41SPEAKER_00: Okay, so what we have here, what Jesus is saying here is something that is really profound on what truth actually is.
- 16:50SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 16:51SPEAKER_00: He's he is stating that what truth is, right, where it comes from, how it's defined, which for us in this day and age, especially, in our society, on our campuses, this would be completely foreign to us.
- 17:01SPEAKER_00: Okay, here's what he's saying.
- 17:02SPEAKER_00: He's saying that truth is revealed to us by God through his word.
- 17:07SPEAKER_00: And it's not found in you know human evolution, it's not in our ingenuity or our own understanding of the world world, but rather it is in his word.
- 17:15SPEAKER_00: It is God himself that defines truth.
- 17:20SPEAKER_00: Because if man, if we go down the scary path of our own intellectual understanding to find truth, it's like, man, you hear it all the time.
- 17:30SPEAKER_00: It's like, man, you do you, you you live your truth, okay?
- 17:33SPEAKER_00: It's like, man, I'm not, I'm not you.
- 17:34SPEAKER_00: You do whatever you want, okay?
- 17:36SPEAKER_00: Your life, your truth.
- 17:37SPEAKER_00: We hear that.
- 17:38SPEAKER_00: Man, if we go down that road, I mean, it turns into a dead end pretty quickly.
- 17:45SPEAKER_00: And the reason for that is because we as humans, man, we are limited.
- 17:49SPEAKER_00: Okay, we are limited more than we like to admit.
- 17:53SPEAKER_00: Okay, some of you guys in this room are like, limited?
- 17:55SPEAKER_00: Limit me?
- 17:56SPEAKER_00: Unlimited?
- 17:57SPEAKER_00: It's like unlimited.
- 17:58SPEAKER_00: You know, it's like I I am not limited at all, okay?
- 18:00SPEAKER_00: I graduated high school, I'm in the honors college, like I came in with half my degree done.
- 18:05SPEAKER_00: It's like I am not limited, okay?
- 18:07SPEAKER_00: First off, no one cares that you came into college with have your degree done, okay?
- 18:11SPEAKER_00: It's like good for you, I guess.
- 18:13SPEAKER_00: Uh, but seriously, no one cares.
- 18:15SPEAKER_00: And then secondly, it's like, man, anyone, anyone who is self-aware knows that to be the author of your own truth when we can only comprehend a fraction of a fraction of what reality is would just be really silly.
- 18:29SPEAKER_00: It's like we are so limited that if we were like, man, I know what's best, so I'm gonna live like that, I'm gonna be the author of my own truth.
- 18:36SPEAKER_00: It'd be like, man, are you sure?
- 18:38SPEAKER_00: Are like do you understand everything that's happening?
- 18:40SPEAKER_00: Here's hopefully here's a good way to demonstrate this.
- 18:42SPEAKER_00: I heard it from uh uh one of the pastors in our network.
- 18:46SPEAKER_00: He does it like this, okay?
- 18:47SPEAKER_00: We're gonna test someone's knowledge.
- 18:48SPEAKER_00: Okay, let's see if you guys know this.
- 18:49SPEAKER_00: Seriously.
- 18:50SPEAKER_00: Okay, in Russia, there are 1,110 towns.
- 18:54SPEAKER_00: Name five.
- 18:56SPEAKER_00: It's like you can't, okay?
- 18:58SPEAKER_00: It's like you can't name five.
- 18:59SPEAKER_00: Okay, I know Moscow, maybe, I guess.
- 19:01SPEAKER_00: It's like you can't do it.
- 19:02SPEAKER_00: Okay, what about this one?
- 19:03SPEAKER_00: Name every basketball player to ever play in the NBA, WNBA, and in college.
- 19:07SPEAKER_00: There's about 200,000, by the way.
- 19:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah, okay.
- 19:11SPEAKER_00: He says he can do 10,000.
- 19:12SPEAKER_00: I would even bet, I was like, I don't think you could even do that.
- 19:15SPEAKER_00: Okay, some of you are like, man, LeBron, Cooper Flag, you know, it's like I don't want to say Luca, but like Luca.
- 19:20SPEAKER_00: It's like, those are the guys that I know.
- 19:23SPEAKER_00: Okay, you can't do it.
- 19:24SPEAKER_00: Or it's like, man, who is each of their parents and where are they from?
- 19:27SPEAKER_00: When were they born?
- 19:28SPEAKER_00: Where were they born?
- 19:29SPEAKER_00: It's like, dude, it goes way deeper than you think.
- 19:32SPEAKER_00: Okay, maybe you're not a big sports guy or gal, you're more into the arts, maybe music.
- 19:36SPEAKER_00: This one's for you guys.
- 19:37SPEAKER_00: Name every song that has ever been made.
- 19:39SPEAKER_00: Okay, I know we got some music majors in here, but not that kind of music, okay?
- 19:43SPEAKER_00: Name every class that's offered at all collegiate institutions across the country, okay?
- 19:48SPEAKER_00: Name every class that's offered at UNT.
- 19:50SPEAKER_00: Guys, some of you guys can't even name every class that you're in right now.
- 19:53SPEAKER_00: Seriously.
- 19:54SPEAKER_00: It's like we are we are not where we think we are.
- 19:57SPEAKER_00: And guys, we could go absolutely we could go on and on and on with things that we do not understand.
- 20:05SPEAKER_00: But here's my point It's that if you base everything, your life, what you believe, off of what you are able to understand and what you think is right, what you see from your point of view, it doesn't make sense.
- 20:17SPEAKER_00: It's like I don't know if you're the most qualified person to do that.
- 20:21SPEAKER_00: Because we are limited.
- 20:23SPEAKER_00: We only know a fraction of a fraction of what is really out there, and instantly, man, we we disqualify ourselves from being the one to know and to rule everything.
- 20:33SPEAKER_00: And so with that in mind, man, does doesn't it sound a bit foolish for us to say no to a book that was written by the all-knowing and the almighty?
- 20:42SPEAKER_00: To say no to a Bible that was authored by the creator of all things, who has purposed all things.
- 20:48SPEAKER_00: To say no, like, hey man, that's not not for me, right?
- 20:51SPEAKER_00: To something that was sent as a living and active word of God, to say no to this book because we think that we can figure out our life on our own.
- 21:03SPEAKER_00: This is why we think that in order for you to be the have the most fruitful time in college, you need to have the Bible at the forefront of your mind, the book of life in your mind.
- 21:14SPEAKER_00: That's at Salt Company.
- 21:15SPEAKER_00: Because we believe that truth is not found on the inside.
- 21:18SPEAKER_00: It's not what you it's not what you see, it's not what you can come up with, but it's actually on the outside.
- 21:22SPEAKER_00: That truth is not fluid, but man, it's fixed.
- 21:25SPEAKER_00: There's nothing new under the sun.
- 21:26SPEAKER_00: That's what it says in Ecclesiastes, that the Bible is the word of God and is absolute truth over our lives, man, directing us, pointing us towards the ways and the desires of God and not our own flesh.
- 21:38SPEAKER_00: Okay, this is why every single Thursday night, every single Sunday morning, there is there will never be a time that we don't open up the Bible.
- 21:44SPEAKER_00: Okay, there will never be a time that we don't read from the Bible, where we don't sing from the Bible.
- 21:48SPEAKER_00: Guys, we meet outside of here.
- 21:49SPEAKER_00: We already talked about connection groups five times, but there like we have groups to talk about the Bible and the truth that we get in the Bible.
- 21:58SPEAKER_00: Man, it doesn't only answer the question.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: That you know, the silly questions that we had before, but it it answers the questions that we're too scared to even consider.
- 22:10SPEAKER_00: Like though, what does God think of me?
- 22:12SPEAKER_00: Am I too far gone?
- 22:13SPEAKER_00: Can I even get into heaven?
- 22:15SPEAKER_00: How can I ever forgive my mom or my dad?
- 22:18SPEAKER_00: I mean, it answers those questions.
- 22:22SPEAKER_00: I want the people of Salt Company to not only be the hearers of the word, but doers of the word.
- 22:28SPEAKER_00: That our lives would not only be influenced by the word of God, but guys, that it would be shaped like it.
- 22:34SPEAKER_00: He is the potter, we are the clay.
- 22:38SPEAKER_00: I pray that, man, when you go home for Thanksgiving, for Christmas, it's like, wait, who is that?
- 22:44SPEAKER_00: Like, I I don't recognize you from the last time I came.
- 22:48SPEAKER_00: It's like, Joshua, is that you?
- 22:49SPEAKER_00: Like, Decalod, is that you?
- 22:54SPEAKER_00: Imagine what that would be like.
- 22:58SPEAKER_00: So I hope I can give you guys a little bit of an encouragement here, okay?
- 23:02SPEAKER_00: Or maybe a reminder.
- 23:04SPEAKER_00: You maybe you already know this.
- 23:05SPEAKER_00: Man, the Bible is my authority.
- 23:06SPEAKER_00: Maybe I can remind you.
- 23:08SPEAKER_00: Man, for what the Bible has to say about some of the things that we that we might be kept up at night over.
- 23:15SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 23:15SPEAKER_00: We can't fall asleep over.
- 23:18SPEAKER_00: Here it says, where the Bible, or where the world says that you are only as vulnerable or as valuable as much as you are able to produce.
- 23:27SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 23:28SPEAKER_00: If you're valuable, you'll produce this much.
- 23:30SPEAKER_00: The Bible says that you are infinitely more valuable because you are made in the image of God.
- 23:34SPEAKER_00: Okay, it may take your parents 30 years to love you, it took God two chapters.
- 23:39SPEAKER_00: Where the world says that you are unlovable because of what you have done.
- 23:42SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 23:43SPEAKER_00: The skeletons in your closet go too deep.
- 23:45SPEAKER_00: The Bible says that Jesus can save and make you a new creation.
- 23:49SPEAKER_00: Where the world says that you should do whatever you can to live a life of convenience, right?
- 23:53SPEAKER_00: Don't talk to her, forget him, abort that.
- 23:55SPEAKER_00: The baby says that, you know, the Bible says that we love first be or we love because he first loved us.
- 24:02SPEAKER_00: Where the world says that it's okay to lie, cheat, and steal, destroy.
- 24:05SPEAKER_00: The Bible says that Satan has come to steal, kill, and destroy, but Jesus has come to bring life in life abundantly.
- 24:12SPEAKER_00: Where our world says that we need to crawl back to pay for what you have done, the Bible says that the only way to have true redemption in life is through faith in Jesus who has crawled on the cross to die for you.
- 24:23SPEAKER_00: What would happen if you let the voice of truth reign over your life in this semester?
- 24:29SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 24:29SPEAKER_00: Not social media, not your professor, not your boyfriend, not even your own thoughts.
- 24:34SPEAKER_00: What would happen if we were shaped?
- 24:36SPEAKER_00: All of us were shaped by the word of God in this semester for the rest of our lives.
- 24:41SPEAKER_00: This is what Jesus is saying.
- 24:42SPEAKER_00: He says, Sanctify them by the truth.
- 24:45SPEAKER_00: Your word is truth.
- 24:47SPEAKER_00: Assault Company, I want to pray that prayer, and I want to I pray that it would be answered in my own life and in yours.
- 24:54SPEAKER_00: It is essential for the truth in your life to come from the one who created it.
- 25:00SPEAKER_00: Okay, the Bible, it makes us happy and strong.
- 25:03SPEAKER_00: It shapes us with truth.
- 25:05SPEAKER_00: And the last thing that the Bible does is that it points to a savior.
- 25:09SPEAKER_00: This is the last thing that I want you guys to know tonight.
- 25:12SPEAKER_00: We're gonna wrap you up in just a little bit.
- 25:14SPEAKER_00: But guys, do we have uh we're gonna throw it back here just a little bit?
- 25:16SPEAKER_00: 2020.
- 25:16SPEAKER_00: Guys, do we have any Outer Banks fans in the room?
- 25:18SPEAKER_00: Okay, as man, after this season, I don't know, okay?
- 25:21SPEAKER_00: Um, man, during 2020, COVID, it was like peak.
- 25:24SPEAKER_00: Okay, peak.
- 25:25SPEAKER_00: We had uh all the good vibes, we had great music, the characters wonderful, the end of the plot line, it was like, man, this is pretty good, okay?
- 25:32SPEAKER_00: And then we made a second season and it was like, okay, you know, I think we still got the plot here.
- 25:36SPEAKER_00: Um, and then it was season three and then season four, and now season five.
- 25:40SPEAKER_00: It's like, guys, we have we have like lost.
- 25:42SPEAKER_00: Uh we have lost what we once had, uh, and it is bad.
- 25:45SPEAKER_00: It's like I might finish it just because, okay.
- 25:47SPEAKER_00: It only took one episode for me to realize, like, man, this is bad, okay?
- 25:51SPEAKER_00: Production is bad.
- 25:52SPEAKER_00: Kiara's like the worst person on earth.
- 25:53SPEAKER_00: Um, and it's like, how old are these characters?
- 25:56SPEAKER_00: Okay, I'm just supposed to be in like high school.
- 25:57SPEAKER_00: Um, but anyway, man, at the beginning we loved it.
- 26:02SPEAKER_00: We absolutely loved it.
- 26:03SPEAKER_00: Why?
- 26:03SPEAKER_00: Because it man, it was a it was a story that was t that was all pointed to one thing.
- 26:07SPEAKER_00: Can we find the gold?
- 26:08SPEAKER_00: Okay, and then we lost the way.
- 26:09SPEAKER_00: Guys, we see this all over movies, cinema, TV, whatever it is.
- 26:13SPEAKER_00: Uh, do we have any uh Marvel fans in here?
- 26:15SPEAKER_00: Okay, yeah, we got some Marvel fans.
- 26:16SPEAKER_00: Maybe that's more your route, guys.
- 26:18SPEAKER_00: 22 great movies that culminated into one ending and it was endgame and it was wonderful, uh, and they should have stopped their um, you know, minus the Spider-Man's maybe.
- 26:27SPEAKER_00: Um, but it's like, I don't know, can I get excited for Doctor Doom?
- 26:31SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 26:31SPEAKER_00: We'll see.
- 26:32SPEAKER_00: Um it's like, man, Marvel, 22 great movies all telling one story.
- 26:35SPEAKER_00: It woven all these characters in together to lead to one point.
- 26:38SPEAKER_00: Okay, maybe Harry Potter's your way, all that sorcery stuff.
- 26:41SPEAKER_00: Okay, we've got eight movies across 10 years following the boy who lived.
- 26:45SPEAKER_00: Okay, it was like, we like this.
- 26:47SPEAKER_00: This is good, okay?
- 26:48SPEAKER_00: I read or I watched the movies, didn't read the books, and I'm okay with that.
- 26:52SPEAKER_00: Um guys, in the same way.
- 26:54SPEAKER_00: In the same way, okay.
- 26:55SPEAKER_00: You can listen, you can listen now.
- 26:56SPEAKER_00: In the same way, the Bible is something just like that.
- 27:00SPEAKER_00: Okay?
- 27:01SPEAKER_00: It is a book that is composed of 66 books written by 40 different authors, inspired by, really inspired by one author, the Holy Spirit.
- 27:10SPEAKER_00: Okay, written across 1,600 years on three different continents with one main story at the center of all, at the center of it all, and it's a savior, that savior being Jesus Christ.
- 27:20SPEAKER_00: Okay, I want you guys to hear this, certainly.
- 27:23SPEAKER_00: Not from my own words, but from the words of Jesus Himself.
- 27:25SPEAKER_00: Okay, uh, you guys can go to Luke chapter 24.
- 27:28SPEAKER_00: Um, that's where we're gonna end off for tonight.
- 27:30SPEAKER_00: There's a story that points directly to this, okay?
- 27:33SPEAKER_00: Let me give you a little background.
- 27:35SPEAKER_00: Okay, at this point in Jesus' life, Jesus has already died on the cross.
- 27:39SPEAKER_00: Man, people were upset in Jerusalem.
- 27:41SPEAKER_00: Uh his disciples, the people that were close to him, man, sad.
- 27:44SPEAKER_00: All of a sudden, man, he resurrects.
- 27:45SPEAKER_00: Oh my goodness.
- 27:46SPEAKER_00: Uh if you didn't know that, spoiler.
- 27:48SPEAKER_00: Um, but it's like, man, everything is happening.
- 27:50SPEAKER_00: Uh people are like, he's the talk of the town.
- 27:52SPEAKER_00: Okay, if there was a uh a paper, a Jerusalem Times at the time, it was every single day, page one, Jesus.
- 27:58SPEAKER_00: Okay?
- 27:58SPEAKER_00: It's like, well, where's he at?
- 27:59SPEAKER_00: What happened?
- 28:00SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, everyone's all of the like opinion columns are filled with like, hey, what happened to the Jesus guy?
- 28:05SPEAKER_00: Um, but that's what's happening.
- 28:07SPEAKER_00: And at this point in the story, there's these two guys, right?
- 28:09SPEAKER_00: They're walking outside of Jerusalem in a town called Emmaus, only about seven miles outside of Jerusalem.
- 28:15SPEAKER_00: In Jesus, he appears to them.
- 28:16SPEAKER_00: Okay, he appears to these two randos, but it says that they were unable to recognize Jesus.
- 28:22SPEAKER_00: Okay, he just thought he was another one of the guys.
- 28:25SPEAKER_00: So they're walking.
- 28:26SPEAKER_00: Jesus comes to them and he asks them, hey guys, what's the buzz?
- 28:28SPEAKER_00: Like, like what's going on these days?
- 28:30SPEAKER_00: What are you guys talking about?
- 28:31SPEAKER_00: It says that they were arguing.
- 28:32SPEAKER_00: It's like, hey, what's going on?
- 28:34SPEAKER_00: And of course these guys are like, bro, do you actually live under a rock?
- 28:36SPEAKER_00: It's like, are you even have you been alive?
- 28:38SPEAKER_00: You're probably the only one in Jerusalem who does not know what has been going on.
- 28:43SPEAKER_00: And this whole thing with this guy who died, came back to life, and now they can't find him.
- 28:47SPEAKER_00: It's nuts, nuts.
- 28:48SPEAKER_00: And then this is what Jesus says.
- 28:50SPEAKER_00: This is how Jesus responds.
- 28:51SPEAKER_00: They're talking about him, they don't know it.
- 28:53SPEAKER_00: He says in verse 25, he said to them, Jesus said to them, How foolish you are and how slow to believe all that the prophets have spoken.
- 29:01SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 29:02SPEAKER_00: He kind of calls them dumb.
- 29:02SPEAKER_00: It's like, man, are you dumb?
- 29:04SPEAKER_00: Man, how slow to believe all that the prophets have spoken.
- 29:07SPEAKER_00: Wasn't it necessary for the Messiah to suffer these things and enter into his glory?
- 29:12SPEAKER_00: Then, beginning with Moses and all of the prophets, he interpreted for them the things concerning himself in all the scriptures.
- 29:22SPEAKER_00: Right, you can see this very exchange, right?
- 29:26SPEAKER_00: That every book, every story, every page is pointing to Jesus.
- 29:30SPEAKER_00: He himself says this.
- 29:33SPEAKER_00: Pointing to the time that Jesus would come as God in the flesh, become sin, although he knew no sin and die on a cross.
- 29:41SPEAKER_00: Everything in the Bible is pointing to Jesus.
- 29:44SPEAKER_00: Genesis is Jesus, Exodus is Jesus, even Leviticus, guys, is Jesus.
- 29:50SPEAKER_00: If Jesus is not present, if his name is not present on the pages, then he is promised somewhere in there.
- 29:56SPEAKER_00: If he is not being promised, he is being patterned in some way.
- 30:00SPEAKER_00: There's not a page on in this book that is not pointing to Jesus.
- 30:06SPEAKER_00: I don't know if you know this or not, but every single one of us, man, same way, we have a story.
- 30:14SPEAKER_00: We all have one.
- 30:16SPEAKER_00: Maybe your story is more of the athletic achievement, okay?
- 30:18SPEAKER_00: It's like, man, I can throw this ball farther than anyone in this room.
- 30:22SPEAKER_00: Seriously, and that might be the peak of your life, okay?
- 30:26SPEAKER_00: Maybe it's success in school.
- 30:27SPEAKER_00: Like I will start study hardier than harder than any person in this room in order to make sure that I get uh the best grades, the best internship, the best job.
- 30:38SPEAKER_00: You're the popular guy, okay?
- 30:40SPEAKER_00: I have uh the most followers on Instagram, likes on Facebook, if we still use that.
- 30:44SPEAKER_00: Uh man, and maybe maybe your roster is the biggest in Snapchat.
- 30:46SPEAKER_00: It's like you got the best one of all your friends on Snapchat.
- 30:49SPEAKER_00: You're the popular guy.
- 30:51SPEAKER_00: Or maybe your story is simply just I I think I'm a I think I'm a pretty good person.
- 30:55SPEAKER_00: Okay, I stay in my lane, I do the things that uh I think are are great.
- 31:00SPEAKER_00: Uh make sure life isn't too crazy.
- 31:02SPEAKER_00: You know, I do all the crazy things.
- 31:04SPEAKER_00: I just sit in the cul-de-sac with my family, and I'm I'm just a good guy.
- 31:07SPEAKER_00: I don't kill anyone, I don't uh cut anyone off on the road, on the toll way.
- 31:11SPEAKER_00: It's like I'm not I'm not that bad, not that bad of a person.
- 31:14SPEAKER_00: Whatever your story is, no matter who you are, Jesus has come to rewrite your story.
- 31:20SPEAKER_00: To take your story from being broken to made whole, from lost to found, from far off to brought near to the throne.
- 31:29SPEAKER_00: Guys, because every single one of us, man, we have a story, and every single one of us, that story has been tainted by sin.
- 31:36SPEAKER_00: Every single person, no matter who you are, if you've been in church since you were half a year old, half a day old, or if this is your first time, there is sin that taints our story.
- 31:45SPEAKER_00: There's something that you're thinking of, like, oh crap, I hope no one ever knows this about me.
- 31:51SPEAKER_00: Jesus does.
- 31:53SPEAKER_00: He brings us close, he makes us whole, he redeems us to the Father.
- 31:59SPEAKER_00: The story of the Bible is this it invites us into a relationship with Him.
- 32:04SPEAKER_00: The invitation is there in the words.
- 32:06SPEAKER_00: Okay?
- 32:07SPEAKER_00: I've said it tonight.
- 32:08SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's free.
- 32:09SPEAKER_00: You can take it, it brings happiness, it brings strength, it is true.
- 32:15SPEAKER_00: Because by the end of your time in college and with Salt Company, I don't want you guys to just know the Bible.
- 32:20SPEAKER_00: I want you to know the God of the Bible.
- 32:23SPEAKER_00: Because if you could know every single fact about the Bible, you'd do great in a Bible quiz.
- 32:30SPEAKER_00: But man, when the time comes, will you be able to confidently say, Man, I I knew the Father.
- 32:38SPEAKER_00: I was with Him.
- 32:40SPEAKER_00: I had a relationship with Him.
- 32:42SPEAKER_00: The invitation to a relationship is here in the Bible.
- 32:45SPEAKER_00: It's essential that we take the words of this book to the absolute highest level, that we elevate them to the absolute highest point in our lives.
- 32:52SPEAKER_00: And to end our time tonight, guys, I want to tell you just a quick story of someone who did do that.
- 32:57SPEAKER_00: Someone who sought after the words of the Bible, where those words were lavished over her life from a young age.
- 33:03SPEAKER_00: And man, it was just so evident.
- 33:05SPEAKER_00: Absolutely so evident in her life.
- 33:07SPEAKER_00: Okay, can I tell you the story about my great-grandma Betty?
- 33:10SPEAKER_00: Okay, guys, one of the most godly people that I knew uh in my entire life.
- 33:15SPEAKER_00: You could ask any of my family members, they would say the same exact thing.
- 33:18SPEAKER_00: Okay, just a couple years ago, great-grandma Betty passed, uh, which was sad for our family, okay?
- 33:23SPEAKER_00: Um, quite sad, but I went to the went to her funeral, probably the most evident uh characteristic that was that so many people were there.
- 33:30SPEAKER_00: Okay, so many people.
- 33:31SPEAKER_00: Family members who hated family members were there because of Betty, okay?
- 33:34SPEAKER_00: There were random people uh who are her neighbors there because of Betty.
- 33:37SPEAKER_00: Okay, that is evident uh of uh a life after Jesus.
- 33:41SPEAKER_00: But also, something that that was very evident there.
- 33:44SPEAKER_00: Man, if you had to know one thing about Betty, is that she grew up in Great Depression, okay?
- 33:47SPEAKER_00: Great depression in West Virginia, her dad was a coal miner.
- 33:50SPEAKER_00: At some points, my mom would tell us stories that there would be days where she did not have shoes on her feet, okay?
- 33:55SPEAKER_00: Grew up dirt poor.
- 33:57SPEAKER_00: Like dad would be gone for forever, he was working his tail off just to provide for the family.
- 34:02SPEAKER_00: Uh, and then when she was like 16, she goes to Washington, D.C.
- 34:05SPEAKER_00: Okay, gets a job in a post office of all places, gets a job in the post office, and one day this guy walks in, and it's my great-grandpa Bill.
- 34:12SPEAKER_00: Well, they weren't married yet, but she sees him and it's like love at first sight.
- 34:16SPEAKER_00: He's in uh the Navy working on planes, and he walks in and it's like, oh, oh, literally love at first sight.
- 34:22SPEAKER_00: They uh for the next three weeks, he, after every single day of work, he uh drives his truck to uh the post offer, picks up Grandma Betty, and three weeks later they get married.
- 34:31SPEAKER_00: Uh I'm not even joking.
- 34:32SPEAKER_00: Uh three weeks they go down to the old Baptist church.
- 34:34SPEAKER_00: Uh I asked my grandpa about this, my great-grandpa, and he's like, Yeah, uh, I didn't even meet her parents.
- 34:39SPEAKER_00: Her dad was not super happy.
- 34:41SPEAKER_00: Um, but you know, they were married for 80 years, so I think it worked out.
- 34:44SPEAKER_00: Um but anyway, gosh.
- 34:46SPEAKER_00: See, this is what this is what happens when you talk about great grandma Betty.
- 34:48SPEAKER_00: You just can't keep talking all the time.
- 34:50SPEAKER_00: She was great.
- 34:51SPEAKER_00: But anyway, we're sitting there at her funeral, and I'm just in awe of man, my my family and how uh you know her death has affected them and all the people and the uh impact that she's had on all these people's lives.
- 35:02SPEAKER_00: And at the end they play this video, okay?
- 35:05SPEAKER_00: I don't have it, I wish I did, but they play this video, and it's one of my family members sitting next to my great-grandma as she's laying on her deathbed, and she's asking her questions like, man, what was your life like?
- 35:16SPEAKER_00: Like, what wait when this happened?
- 35:18SPEAKER_00: Like, what'd you do?
- 35:19SPEAKER_00: Like, what was the best part of this?
- 35:21SPEAKER_00: And towards towards the end of her life, dude, she could not remember anything.
- 35:24SPEAKER_00: It's like she seriously could not remember anything.
- 35:27SPEAKER_00: I'd be in the same room with her, and it'd be like 40 minutes, and she'd like ask me if I had a girlfriend three times.
- 35:32SPEAKER_00: It's like, I'm married.
- 35:33SPEAKER_00: Uh you know, it's it's it's whatever.
- 35:36SPEAKER_00: It's like, oh, what job do you have?
- 35:38SPEAKER_00: And she was like, I was her favorite, she was my favorite, it was great.
- 35:41SPEAKER_00: She wasn't ashamed to say it too.
- 35:43SPEAKER_00: All four of my sisters would be in the room, and she's like, Owen, you're just my favorite.
- 35:47SPEAKER_00: It's like, you're pretty red hair.
- 35:49SPEAKER_00: It's like, how are how are you not married yet?
- 35:51SPEAKER_00: I'm like, Grandma, I am.
- 35:53SPEAKER_00: But it's like she could not remember anything.
- 35:57SPEAKER_00: But one of my family members is right next to her, and she's asking her questions about her life, struggling to respond.
- 36:03SPEAKER_00: And then my family asked, hey, Grandma, do you do you know the gospel?
- 36:09SPEAKER_00: And just like like that.
- 36:11SPEAKER_00: It was not like not a second went by.
- 36:13SPEAKER_00: She's like, Well, if you believe in Jesus, he came and died for our sins.
- 36:20SPEAKER_00: And if you believe in him, you'll live in heaven one day.
- 36:22SPEAKER_00: And it's like, Grandma, do you believe that?
- 36:24SPEAKER_00: Absolutely, I can't wait to see him.
- 36:26SPEAKER_00: It was like, you know, and then all and then right after she says, You're just so beautiful.
- 36:32SPEAKER_00: It's like that, that was her character.
- 36:33SPEAKER_00: That was her character.
- 36:34SPEAKER_00: But it's like you want to talk about a woman who was rooted in the Bible, to where even in the late stages of life, when she can't remember anything, the one thing she did remember is the gospel.
- 36:46SPEAKER_00: I can guarantee when she had absolutely nothing, no, she was on her feet, nothing in her house, there was happiness.
- 36:53SPEAKER_00: Okay, it made her strong to withstand the pangs of life.
- 36:57SPEAKER_00: Okay, I can't even imagine the conversation she had with her dad when she came home and said, Hey, I'm married.
- 37:01SPEAKER_00: It's the Bible that gets her through it.
- 37:03SPEAKER_00: It's the truth in the Bible that got her through it.
- 37:07SPEAKER_00: It was a truth that she rooted her life on that got her to 94, and she was still speaking the gospel to the people at her funeral.
- 37:16SPEAKER_00: Man, I hope that's us someday.
- 37:18SPEAKER_00: Just a room full of badies.
- 37:20SPEAKER_00: Will there be a time when we are at our own funeral able to clearly depict the gospel because of how we acted in our college years?
- 37:27SPEAKER_00: I hope that's true.
- 37:29SPEAKER_00: We can pray.
- 37:35SPEAKER_00: Lord, I'm thankful for man, everything you've done in our lives.
- 37:39SPEAKER_00: I don't want to uh just uh gloss over the fact that we're in this room tonight, that there are students from UNT and T Dub that you have uh just integrally put into um our lives and into this room tonight to hear the gospel, to praise you, to sing songs of praise to you, only to you.
- 37:55SPEAKER_00: So Lord, I pray um that you would just do your thing here in this room, that your spirit would be moving.
- 38:00SPEAKER_00: Um it says in your word that the word of God is living and active, it's sharper than any double-edged sword.
- 38:06SPEAKER_00: So, Lord, I pray um that it would do its thing tonight, that it would pierce the hearts, my own heart, to convict man the hearts of the students in the room.
- 38:14SPEAKER_00: Lord, I pray um that we would be a people who never take our eyes off of you and never take our eyes off of your words.
- 38:20SPEAKER_00: Lord, in the hardest days, would we look back to your word, the promises that you gave us?
- 38:27SPEAKER_00: Lord, from the first page of Genesis to the last page in Revelation, would we be able to look back on your faithfulness?
- 38:32SPEAKER_00: Would we be able to look forward to what is to come?
- 38:35SPEAKER_00: The groom coming for his bride, would I pray that that would be the things that fuel our life here on earth?
- 38:41SPEAKER_00: And Lord, when we are on our deathbed, Lord, there would be nothing that we can get out of our mouths other than the gospel.
- 38:48SPEAKER_00: God, I pray that this to be true.
- 38:50SPEAKER_00: Pray this to be true for our sins.
- 38:51SPEAKER_00: In the name of praying.
- 38:52SPEAKER_00: Amen.
