- Lucas: Hey Luna. Welcome back to Learn Dutch with Fexingo. I am so glad you are here today. Luna: Hi Lucas! I missed this show. It feels like we just stopped talking about cooking verbs. Lucas: We did. And now that the weather is getting nicer, it is time to move outside. Today, we are talking about grilling. Luna: Oh, yes. I love summer barbecues. But I always forget what to say when the meat is on the fire. Lucas: That is why we are here. Let us start with the most important phrase. When you decide to cook on the grill. Luna: Okay. So, how do I say 'I am going to grill'? Lucas: Listen closely. Ik ga grillen. Luna: Ik ga grillen. Lucas: Perfect. 'Ik ga' means 'I am going to'. And 'grillen' is the verb for grilling. Try it again slowly. Luna: Ik ga... grillen. Lucas: Excellent. You sound like a pro already. Now, imagine the meat is on the grill. What should you do? Luna: You have to watch it carefully. Otherwise it burns. Lucas: Exactly. In Dutch, we say 'watch over it' or 'keep an eye on it'. The phrase is: Hou het vlees in de gaten. Luna: Hou het vlees in de gaten. Lucas: Good. 'Hou' is from the verb 'houden', to keep or hold. 'In de gaten' means in the eyes, or in your sight. So literally, keep the meat in your sight. Luna: That makes sense. Keep it in your sight. Okay. Hou het vlees in de gaten. Lucas: Let me hear it one more time. Make sure you say 'vlees' clearly. Luna: Hou het vlees in de gaten. Lucas: Nailed it. Now, let us say you pick up a piece of meat with tongs. You want to check if it is cooked. Luna: Right. I might ask my friend, 'Is it still raw?' Lucas: Yes. That phrase is very useful. Is het nog rauw? Luna: Is het nog rauw? Lucas: Nice tone. 'Rauw' means raw. 'Nog' means still. So, is it still raw? Luna: Is het nog rauw? Lucas: Perfect. If the answer is no, then you need to flip it over. Do you know how to say 'give it a turn'? Luna: No. How do you tell someone to flip the burger? Lucas: It is a simple command. Geef het om. Luna: Geef het om. Lucas: Very good. 'Geef' means give. 'Om' means around or over. So you are giving it an over-turn. Try saying it with a bit of energy. Luna: Geef het om! Lucas: There it is. Finally, after some time, the meat is done. How do you say 'It is ready'? Luna: Is it 'Het is af'? Lucas: Close. But for food, we usually use 'klaar'. Het is klaar. Luna: Het is klaar. Lucas: Yes. 'Klaar' means ready or finished. Just like when you finish a task. So, 'Het is klaar' means 'It is ready to eat.' Luna: Ah, okay. Not 'af'. 'Klaar'. Got it. Het is klaar. Lucas: Let us put it all together in a little scene. You are at a party. You are holding the tongs. Luna: Okay. I say: Ik ga grillen. Lucas: Good. Then you look at the steak. Luna: Hou het vlees in de gaten. Lucas: You touch it with the tongs. Luna: Is het nog rauw? Lucas: Your friend says no. So you tell them: Luna: Geef het om. Lucas: And finally, you take it off the heat. Luna: Het is klaar. Lucas: That was smooth. You used all five phrases perfectly. Let us repeat them one last time to lock them in. Luna: Ready. Ik ga grillen. Lucas: Hou het vlees in de gaten. Luna: Is het nog rauw? Lucas: Geef het om. Luna: Het is klaar. Lucas: Wonderful work today. Before we go, I want to mention something important. If Fexingo has been helping you make actual progress with this language... Luna: Yeah, it really helps to have these small episodes. It feels less stressful than big textbooks. Lucas: Exactly. The way these stay ad-free is listener support. If today was actually useful to you, you can buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo — that's F. E. X. I. N. G. O. Luna: Thanks for keeping this show running. It means a lot to me. Lucas: Back to the grill. Imagine you are cooking sausages. You say: Ik ga grillen. Luna: And you watch them carefully. Hou het vlees in de gaten. Lucas: You wonder if they are done. Is het nog rauw? Luna: You flip them. Geef het om. Lucas: And you serve them. Het is klaar. Luna: I think I am hungry now. Thanks, Lucas. Lucas: My pleasure. Practice these till we chat again. See you next time.
