- 0:00SPEAKER_00: So here is the big idea this morning.
- 0:07SPEAKER_00: The peace of Christ is not the mere absence of conflict and violence.
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: The peace of Christ signifies the presence of God's justice.
- 0:22That is the theme of our message this morning,
- 0:25that we are called to a new vision.
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: That is a quote from the book, Let Our Joys Be Known, chapter 13.
- 0:34Those of you that have been around for a little bit know that
- 0:37we have been going
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: through a book study.
- 0:39Some of you have been doing that in life group or Sunday school
- 0:42class or just in
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: your personal homes.
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: And today is...
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: for good or bad,
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: the last Sunday in that 13-week series,
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: where we are thinking about God's justice,
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: God's peace,
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: and what it means to be called to a new vision.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: God's peace is justice in motion.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: In Jesus, we are made new creatures.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: And we are sent to build a world where everyone can breathe.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: As we think about peace, what if peace isn't quiet?
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: What if it looks like a grand festival or a grand celebration?
- 1:35What if peace sounds like doors unlocking and letting people in
- 1:41and out where debts
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: are released and forgiven?
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: What if peace looks like our neighbor's
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: being seen, maybe for the very first time.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: We'll be looking at four scriptures this morning.
- 1:58Luke chapter 4 verses 16 through 21 tells us that Jesus stood
- 2:05up in the synagogue
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: and He read from the scriptures Isaiah.
- 2:11He proclaimed good news to the poor,
- 2:14freedom for the captives,
- 2:17sight for the blind.
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: And then he said, this scripture is fulfilled today in your presence.
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: Jesus' first sermon was a job description.
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: His peace is active, not aesthetic.
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: It heals, it lifts, and it announces jubilee.
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: Now maybe jubilee is a word that you're unfamiliar with.
- 2:46We are going to be exploring that idea of Jubilee in our next
- 2:50series in just two weeks.
- 2:53We are going to be talking about our money story and what it
- 2:58means to be part of
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: God's money story as well.
- 3:03SPEAKER_00: And Jubilee is at the heart of God's money story.
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: So, come back.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: And learn about that here in the next few weeks.
- 3:14Amos,
- 3:14an Old Testament prophet,
- 3:16in chapter 5,
- 3:17verses 21 through 24,
- 3:21thunders to singing people.
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: He proclaims, God wants mercy more than music.
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: He proclaims, let justice roll down like waters.
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: He cries to the people.
- 3:39In Isaiah chapter 58,
- 3:41verses 1 through 9,
- 3:43it calls out fasting that ignores the hungry.
- 3:49People who fast choosing to be hungry and ignoring those who
- 3:55have no choice.
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: in the hunger that they have.
- 3:59He proclaims that true worship loosens chains and shelters
- 4:05vulnerable people.
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: And then he says,
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: when we live like that,
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: as the people of God,
- 4:11SPEAKER_00: that your light will break forth like the dawn into the world.
- 4:18And Paul,
- 4:20he says in 2 Corinthians 5,
- 4:2217-21,
- 4:25if anyone is in Christ,
- 4:27you are a new creation.
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: Old things, they are passed away.
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: They are gone.
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: We have become new.
- 4:38And in that newness,
- 4:39we become ambassadors of reconciliation in the world.
- 4:46SPEAKER_00: Cornel West,
- 4:48SPEAKER_00: a philosopher and a theologian and an activist,
- 4:51SPEAKER_00: says it this way,
- 4:53SPEAKER_00: justice is what love looks like in public.
- 4:58As I said last week,
- 4:59love wears work boots and carries a toolbox,
- 5:04just like Eddie Meyerhofer.
- 5:11SPEAKER_00: Friends, vision begins in worship.
- 5:16SPEAKER_00: But it cannot end at the benediction.
- 5:19SPEAKER_00: It must walk out of the doors with us and impact the world.
- 5:28SPEAKER_00: Where is God already moving in our community?
- 5:33SPEAKER_00: Well,
- 5:33SPEAKER_00: read a little article that last month,
- 5:36Harrisonburg City sold land below value in order to provide
- 5:43affordable homes.
- 5:46In that act,
- 5:47justice rolled towards low-income families in our community.
- 5:54Across Virginia in these last months,
- 5:56workforce housing gained fresh fuel.
- 6:01SPEAKER_00: New funds are flowing into real projects for real people.
- 6:07SPEAKER_00: It is a place where policy meets the dinner table.
- 6:12SPEAKER_00: where rent or food becomes a choice.
- 6:18SPEAKER_00: When storms strike, love goes public.
- 6:21SPEAKER_00: We all know that.
- 6:22SPEAKER_00: Brethren, Disaster Ministries is rebuilding after every known disaster.
- 6:29And unfortunately,
- 6:30it sounds like that there's a few on the way this week.
- 6:34SPEAKER_00: Our people are showing up with hammers and with hope.
- 6:40SPEAKER_00: And the world calls out for acts of peace.
- 6:45SPEAKER_00: This year's UN Day theme said this, act now for a peaceful world.
- 6:55SPEAKER_00: And friends, God's church can and must lead the way in that pursuit.
- 7:07SPEAKER_00: So, what does new vision look like for us here in this congregation?
- 7:13SPEAKER_00: Well,
- 7:14SPEAKER_00: it looks like reading Luke 4 as our chapter,
- 7:20SPEAKER_00: as our charter,
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: as our job description,
- 7:24SPEAKER_00: and measuring success by who gets lifted up in the process.
- 7:32SPEAKER_00: It looks like practicing Isaiah 58 in small,
- 7:37SPEAKER_00: steady ways,
- 7:39SPEAKER_00: sharing bread,
- 7:41SPEAKER_00: welcoming the stranger,
- 7:43SPEAKER_00: spending ourselves for the hungry in the world,
- 7:48SPEAKER_00: both spiritually and physically.
- 7:52SPEAKER_00: It looks like choosing Amos over apathy.
- 7:58SPEAKER_00: When systems harm people, we must speak up and mend as much as we can.
- 8:07SPEAKER_00: And when rivers dry up, we need to dig channels for justice in the world.
- 8:16SPEAKER_00: It looks like being reconcilers at your workplace.
- 8:20SPEAKER_00: Listen first.
- 8:22SPEAKER_00: Tell the truth.
- 8:23SPEAKER_00: Repair when you can.
- 8:25SPEAKER_00: Carry grace into every meeting that you have next week.
- 8:31SPEAKER_00: It looks like budgets that bless you.
- 8:35both in the church,
- 8:37in the workplace,
- 8:39and in the various sectors of our society.
- 8:42SPEAKER_00: We tithe time and resources towards mercy.
- 8:48We invest in places where people are pressed hard so that they
- 8:53can be lifted up.
- 8:56SPEAKER_00: It looks like raising kids,
- 8:59SPEAKER_00: parents,
- 9:00SPEAKER_00: who expect fairness in the world,
- 9:05SPEAKER_00: teaching them to spot dignity in every face that they meet along the way,
- 9:12SPEAKER_00: letting them see you
- 9:16SPEAKER_00: Make things right in the world by example.
- 9:20SPEAKER_00: It looks like praying with our sleeves up.
- 9:24SPEAKER_00: Your kingdom come, and then we move our feet.
- 9:28SPEAKER_00: Prayer fuels practice, and our practice must always extend our prayers.
- 9:38SPEAKER_00: It looks like a church-wide audit of welcome prayer.
- 9:43We need to be asking questions like,
- 9:46whose voices among us haven't been heard?
- 9:50SPEAKER_00: And I'm not talking about who's up here doing the worship leading.
- 9:55And what doors need to be opened wider,
- 10:00both physically,
- 10:02spiritually,
- 10:03socially,
- 10:04emotionally?
- 10:06SPEAKER_00: How can we do that for those among us?
- 10:10SPEAKER_00: It looks like business owners mentoring startups.
- 10:14SPEAKER_00: People need a vocation, and many times they need help in that.
- 10:20Help sometimes looks like writing a first business plan or a
- 10:25first invoice for someone.
- 10:28SPEAKER_00: Friends, justice can begin with a shared spreadsheet or a drafting table.
- 10:37SPEAKER_00: Right, John?
- 10:40SPEAKER_00: It looks like neighbors knowing neighbors,
- 10:44SPEAKER_00: learning names,
- 10:46SPEAKER_00: learning stories,
- 10:47SPEAKER_00: learning food allergies,
- 10:50so we can invite people over for dinner and they can eat with
- 10:54us in safety and in
- 10:57SPEAKER_00: peace.
- 10:59SPEAKER_00: Care begins with attention to the details in other people's lives.
- 11:09SPEAKER_00: It's not all about work, though.
- 11:12SPEAKER_00: It also looks like Sabbath.
- 11:16SPEAKER_00: Sabbath that restores.
- 11:18SPEAKER_00: Rest.
- 11:20SPEAKER_00: We need to learn to rest so we can rise for mercy sakes again.
- 11:28SPEAKER_00: Burnout helps no one.
- 11:30SPEAKER_00: And I know that in the previous season, you know, there's some burnout.
- 11:37SPEAKER_00: So we're looking to rest.
- 11:39SPEAKER_00: That is part of justice.
- 11:41SPEAKER_00: That is part of mercy.
- 11:43SPEAKER_00: Because balance in our lives, even in our faith, is brave.
- 11:51SPEAKER_00: It looks like hope.
- 11:54SPEAKER_00: Hope that refuses cynicism.
- 11:58We do not ever deny pain,
- 12:02especially the pain of ourselves,
- 12:05the pain of others.
- 12:07SPEAKER_00: Instead, we deny despair, having the last word.
- 12:13Resurrection people keep building even in the midst of decay
- 12:21while it abounds.
- 12:23SPEAKER_00: And it looks like joy.
- 12:25SPEAKER_00: Because joy fuels justice.
- 12:29We sing while we serve so that we remember why we are doing
- 12:36what we are doing.
- 12:38SPEAKER_00: So as we close, hear this call again.
- 12:43SPEAKER_00: Jesus still reads Isaiah in our midst, in our town, in our community.
- 12:51SPEAKER_00: The Spirit of the Lord is upon us to bring good news to the poor,
- 13:00SPEAKER_00: freedom to the captives,
- 13:02SPEAKER_00: sight for the blind.
- 13:06SPEAKER_00: Today, this scripture longs to be fulfilled in our presence.
- 13:15SPEAKER_00: May it be so.
- 13:17SPEAKER_00: Amen.
