- 1:15Speaker 1: win over Anaheim last Thursday to open the season and
- 1:18Speaker 1: the Kraken following up in walk off fashion just like
- 1:22Speaker 1: their baseball brethren. After a historic postseason victory for the Mariners,
- 1:26Speaker 1: the Kraken ending it on the last blow against the
- 1:29Speaker 1: Vegas Golden Knights.
- 1:31Speaker 2: The right nig side at the near circle sims it
- 1:33Speaker 2: up top Adam Larst now for doud shot.
- 1:44Speaker 3: It's done.
- 1:45Speaker 4: Picks off season five with this first goal of the season.
- 1:49Speaker 5: Seventeen thirty nine to play in the first one nothing Seattle,
- 1:54Speaker 5: Jamie Schwartz put a great zone entry in the offensive end.
- 1:57Speaker 6: He comes across the blue line to buy himself some time.
- 2:00Speaker 7: He finds Larsen up in the high slot area just
- 2:03Speaker 7: into the blue line. Larson waits, He waits for an
- 2:06Speaker 7: Anaheim player to attack him. That leaves Fin's done open
- 2:09Speaker 7: to the side. Beats it off to the side.
- 2:11Speaker 6: Done, Who's top shop?
- 2:12Speaker 2: One w practice half wall Harry Holly up top hope,
- 2:15Speaker 2: checked away by Montour. Brandon Montour find the step one Terry,
- 2:19Speaker 2: They'll take it off to the corner.
- 2:20Speaker 8: Sentry pass Mason Marshman stop. Welcome to Seattle. Mason Marshman
- 2:33Speaker 8: his first goal in.
- 2:35Speaker 9: Cracking colors, and Seattle regains the lead.
- 2:38Speaker 6: Early in the second. It's a tu on.
- 2:40Speaker 7: Cracking edge, but Brandon Montour up that right side, battles
- 2:43Speaker 7: for a puck, pokes it off the duck stick.
- 2:46Speaker 6: That says, no precident gates season games.
- 2:48Speaker 7: No problem is he burns down that right side, finds
- 2:52Speaker 7: Marchman in front.
- 2:53Speaker 6: Marshman taps it home to one.
- 2:55Speaker 2: Out of it once again, but on the pressure in front, yes.
- 3:00Speaker 5: Can Sharon mckab the insurance gold more.
- 3:10Speaker 4: Seattle HiT's a three to one cracking lead.
- 3:13Speaker 6: Fifteen thirty five left in the third.
- 3:17Speaker 7: Well, fantastic zon entry by Seattle's They got that puck
- 3:20Speaker 7: cross ice every dumps it into the far corner, but
- 3:23Speaker 7: Heres gets to win first, just a chuck of the.
- 3:26Speaker 6: Puck out to the front of them.
- 3:27Speaker 7: Then mckn gets that chuck close top shelf blucker.
- 3:31Speaker 1: Side three to one dle in.
- 3:33Speaker 7: Front door fam on the north step turn aside by
- 3:36Speaker 7: Joey the Gord. That was a big save there, bottom
- 3:39Speaker 7: of the left circle in the low slought area door.
- 3:42Speaker 2: Fem turned away by Joey the gourd first probably difficult saved,
- 3:47Speaker 2: high danger save of the night for Joey the Gore,
- 3:50Speaker 2: left side down the wall into the corner.
- 3:53Speaker 6: Everly, Oh, punch it back up top. Bit's done at front.
- 3:57Speaker 10: Bears alone the face.
- 4:05Speaker 4: Ben's done from the line, sends it down the left
- 4:09Speaker 4: side wall to every who found veneers in front, toe drags,
- 4:13Speaker 4: Aiden Hill and a Seattle cracket take a one nothing lead,
- 4:18Speaker 4: a power play goal twelve oh two left and period
- 4:21Speaker 4: number two.
- 4:22Speaker 7: Well, Seattle catches Vegas leading a little bit too much
- 4:25Speaker 7: towards the neutral zone.
- 4:27Speaker 6: Has done. Does put that buck down deep. Beverly's the
- 4:29Speaker 6: man in the core. He knows Pneer's the front.
- 4:32Speaker 7: He wants to put it onto his forehead, which he does,
- 4:34Speaker 7: but by the time Eaton Hill comes out, Vaneer steps around.
- 4:37Speaker 6: Into the back end.
- 4:38Speaker 2: It's one nothing cracking your side. Hutton knocked down Marner
- 4:41Speaker 2: again that shot. It's a body that was Montour on
- 4:45Speaker 2: the way through. It's Ben Hutton again. They'll send it
- 4:48Speaker 2: down the wall. Marner over the hurdle. Back to Marner
- 4:51Speaker 2: is they'll send it down the boards. Vegas setting it
- 4:55Speaker 2: up is pabo door fIF the left wing side door
- 4:57Speaker 2: FM back hands it up top to white Cloud, shot
- 5:00Speaker 2: block all the way through again in Seattle airmail, this
- 5:03Speaker 2: one down the ice Chandler Steven said, up to Montour
- 5:07Speaker 2: who bowl rushes zack white Cloud and now Bonteur getting into.
- 5:13Speaker 10: It on the far side.
- 5:14Speaker 9: Glass a big punch to the side of the head
- 5:17Speaker 9: a Ben Hutton. Bonteur's glove went flying into the stands,
- 5:21Speaker 9: and now Monteur takes down hutting right in front of
- 5:25Speaker 9: the Seattle cracking beds.
- 5:26Speaker 2: Even ears watched by Tomash hurdle six.
- 5:29Speaker 7: Seconds left, ten ears left circle shot.
- 5:32Speaker 6: On wave out stood.
- 5:41Speaker 5: Yes, hey McCain and over time Sharon mckenn wins it
- 5:50Speaker 5: for Seattle, their first two and oh start in team history.
- 5:55Speaker 7: Tu On over Vegas bills fits done, picking up the
- 5:59Speaker 7: buck into the blue line. He knew the time of
- 6:02Speaker 7: the clock. It's about seven seconds. He got a shot off.
- 6:05Speaker 7: Mckenn was in front. He finds the rebound. He buries
- 6:09Speaker 7: it to to one overtime win.
- 6:11Speaker 6: Bring on the follow.
- 6:13Speaker 1: Kay, and that's that the Crack and with their first
- 6:15Speaker 1: two and oh start in franchise history, with Jereed mccannon
- 6:18Speaker 1: factoring in the goal scoring category in both wins over
- 6:22Speaker 1: Anaheim in Vegas, the Cracking already on the plane into Montreal.
- 6:26Speaker 1: They opened up the six game road trip tomorrow at
- 6:28Speaker 1: Bell Center. After practice today, Freddie Gudreau shared more on
- 6:32Speaker 1: his progress the return to nearby his hometown. Rude said
- 6:36Speaker 1: Moore as he spoke with the media in Montreal.
- 6:38Speaker 11: Yeah, it's a great group. It's been my feelings since
- 6:41Speaker 11: the first day I got here. Awesome group of guys.
- 6:45Speaker 11: Everybody's worked extremely art at camp, getting on the same
- 6:48Speaker 11: page and we're just having fun building together right now.
- 6:52Speaker 12: What are kind of your early observations, I guess about
- 6:55Speaker 12: the identity of this group and what it seems like
- 6:57Speaker 12: you guys are wanting to build towards.
- 7:00Speaker 11: I think an honest, honest type of game building from
- 7:04Speaker 11: defense first and but not you know, not blocking the
- 7:09Speaker 11: offensive attributes and qualities of everybody after that, but just
- 7:14Speaker 11: having a defensive mindset first and doing the right things defensively.
- 7:18Speaker 11: Like I said, just an honest game and connected I
- 7:21Speaker 11: think is the most important part. When everybody's connected and
- 7:25Speaker 11: knows where the other one is gonna be and read
- 7:27Speaker 11: off of each other. I think we can be a
- 7:29Speaker 11: good team for sure.
- 7:30Speaker 12: You're playing with two young players on either of your
- 7:33Speaker 12: wings there, who are you know, rightfully finding their own games,
- 7:35Speaker 12: their own identities as players? How do you kind of
- 7:37Speaker 12: approach being a veteran and a leader playing with those
- 7:39Speaker 12: two guys?
- 7:41Speaker 11: You know, it's it's it's easy playing with those guys there.
- 7:44Speaker 11: Like I said, they are awesome, awesome players, awesome people.
- 7:48Speaker 11: It's you know, so you can always talk on the bench,
- 7:52Speaker 11: you know, just be honest with each other.
- 7:53Speaker 3: But it's just fun.
- 7:54Speaker 11: They work extremely hard, and guys that works extremely hard
- 7:58Speaker 11: and create space.
- 7:59Speaker 3: On the ice, it's always fun to play with.
- 8:00Speaker 11: They see the game well too, so it's a it's
- 8:03Speaker 11: been really fun.
- 8:04Speaker 12: Anything that stands out about Yanni Newman's game in particular
- 8:07Speaker 12: to you, yeah.
- 8:07Speaker 3: I mean he's uh, he's such a big frame.
- 8:10Speaker 11: But when you had a big frame, a good accy
- 8:12Speaker 11: player on a big frame, it, you know, a good
- 8:15Speaker 11: brain on a big frame, it it can be very dangerous.
- 8:19Speaker 11: So he's got a terrific shot, Like I said, he's big,
- 8:22Speaker 11: so he's hard to get the puck away from. And
- 8:26Speaker 11: it's been really fun to play with him. I know
- 8:29Speaker 11: you've played in the NHL a while and you've come
- 8:31Speaker 11: back here before.
- 8:32Speaker 13: But does it ever lose it's it's it's.
- 8:34Speaker 11: Uh specialness when when you get to come back and
- 8:37Speaker 11: play in almost almost your hometown. No, it never, it
- 8:40Speaker 11: never does. It's a it's a special place. The building itself,
- 8:44Speaker 11: you know, the energy, but it's more than that to me.
- 8:47Speaker 11: It's what it all represents growing up here. I grew
- 8:51Speaker 11: up maybe an hour away from here, and it's all
- 8:54Speaker 11: the people that I grew up with, my family, you know,
- 8:57Speaker 11: my my siblings, my parents. It represents the dream to
- 9:01Speaker 11: it all. So it's it's a very very special place.
- 9:04Speaker 11: It always feels yeah special. And just the way you
- 9:09Speaker 11: came up, I mean you didn't really get anything handed
- 9:11Speaker 11: to you.
- 9:11Speaker 1: I mean does that make it more special?
- 9:13Speaker 6: Just did did?
- 9:14Speaker 3: Did you envision this when you were younger? Yeah? I
- 9:18Speaker 3: mean all the games are special, for sure.
- 9:21Speaker 10: I did.
- 9:22Speaker 11: Weirdly, you know, even when the doors were all closed
- 9:28Speaker 11: and locked many times, you know, I don't know that
- 9:31Speaker 11: I found a way to open them, and I just
- 9:35Speaker 11: had that idea in my head that that's what I
- 9:37Speaker 11: wanted to do it.
- 9:40Speaker 3: Many times, starting really young.
- 9:41Speaker 11: You know, it was kind of impossible from what I
- 9:44Speaker 11: would hear and but I don't know, something inside me
- 9:47Speaker 11: was deeper and stronger than.
- 9:50Speaker 3: That the outside voices.
- 9:52Speaker 11: And so yeah, it means it means something's very very special,
- 9:55Speaker 11: very uh yeah, deep, very close to my heart. When
- 9:59Speaker 11: I play every NHL game, especially here, it's there's a
- 10:02Speaker 11: little something more.
- 10:04Speaker 10: You're gonna be tomorrow coming. You got family, siblings, parents, friends.
- 10:08Speaker 3: Yeah, always always a big group tomorrow.
- 10:12Speaker 11: I don't think as much, but I've had some crazy
- 10:14Speaker 11: crowds here, so it's always cool.
- 10:17Speaker 3: Were you a Canadians fan?
- 10:19Speaker 11: I you know, I think everybody in Quebec is, to
- 10:22Speaker 11: be honest, you grow up, it's the one thing that
- 10:24Speaker 11: you see, so just this kind of natural.
- 10:28Speaker 3: Chip for them, and.
- 10:31Speaker 11: Yeah, you know when there's wins and stuff and all
- 10:34Speaker 11: that stuff. But yeah, I would say not not not
- 10:38Speaker 11: like a crazy fan, you know, but I would watch
- 10:40Speaker 11: them on TV and stuff.
- 10:42Speaker 12: I got one more for you. I'm not sure if
- 10:44Speaker 12: you have had the chance to connect with Ellie Tolven
- 10:45Speaker 12: and yet about your dogs. Are you aware that he
- 10:49Speaker 12: named his dog after your.
- 10:50Speaker 11: Die, And I saw that the thing you guys did
- 10:52Speaker 11: on I saw that, you know, during the game, there
- 10:55Speaker 11: was something you guys did about It's so funny. But
- 10:59Speaker 11: now he told him, so it's funny, but they.
- 11:01Speaker 3: I don't think.
- 11:02Speaker 11: I don't think they've met yet or I haven't met
- 11:04Speaker 11: Islola yet, but yeah, that's really funny.
- 11:07Speaker 12: Wait, so did you see it before we ran in
- 11:10Speaker 12: on the broadcast? Did you guys talk about it before
- 11:12Speaker 12: that or after about it?
- 11:13Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 11:13Speaker 11: I knew about it that long time ago, but I
- 11:15Speaker 11: saw that little thing two you guys did, and that
- 11:18Speaker 11: was funny.
- 11:19Speaker 12: It's like one of the first things that he was
- 11:20Speaker 12: like ready to tell us.
- 11:21Speaker 1: He's like, I loved his dogs so much.
- 11:23Speaker 11: Yeah, I mean tol me, uh, I love him. We
- 11:26Speaker 11: got close, really close in Milwaukee, so I felt it
- 11:30Speaker 11: was an honor. I know he said it's because he
- 11:32Speaker 11: thought we were never going to see each other again.
- 11:34Speaker 11: But I saw it as an honor. And now I'm
- 11:36Speaker 11: happy you we got the boat Lolas together her.
- 11:38Speaker 1: Well, doesn't the dog make you just feel all kind
- 11:41Speaker 1: of nice and warm inside? What a story from Freddy
- 11:44Speaker 1: Goodrow A credit piper shot bringing that up in Montreal.
- 11:48Speaker 1: All right, Freddy Goodrow with good vibes heading into Montreal
- 11:51Speaker 1: because the Kraken r two and zero for the first
- 11:54Speaker 1: time in franchise history, the good vibes building off the
- 11:57Speaker 1: two to one overtime win over Vegas in walk off fashion,
- 12:02Speaker 1: just like their baseball brethren one night prior in that
- 12:05Speaker 1: historic fifteen inning Alds Game five. It's walk off season
- 12:11Speaker 1: without further ado ever fits you, Al Koniski now joining
- 12:14Speaker 1: us on Cracking Weekly. They're in Montreal right now, fellas
- 12:18Speaker 1: a two and zero start out of the gates. How
- 12:21Speaker 1: do we summarize this? Did it meet the bar? Was
- 12:24Speaker 1: it beyond our wildest dreams? Or dare we say show
- 12:29Speaker 1: me more?
- 12:30Speaker 14: Ah, I'm gonna say a little bit of column, a
- 12:34Speaker 14: little bit of column Cee.
- 12:35Speaker 10: I think it was. It was a really big two
- 12:40Speaker 10: games for Seattle.
- 12:42Speaker 14: And when you think about Anaheim, an up and coming
- 12:45Speaker 14: team that you're gonna be battling with a lot for
- 12:47Speaker 14: the next however many years, and then you've got Vegas,
- 12:51Speaker 14: who is you know, two three years and move from
- 12:55Speaker 14: a cup and they've they've never missed the playoffs except
- 12:57Speaker 14: for the one year. They're constantly fired on all cylinders,
- 13:01Speaker 14: and the style of play, the crack and one to
- 13:04Speaker 14: be able to shut those two teams down was awesome.
- 13:08Speaker 15: Yeah, I thought that obviously a fantastic couple of wins.
- 13:13Speaker 15: What really stood up to me was the leadership on
- 13:16Speaker 15: the team, the guy the leaders led Joey to court included,
- 13:21Speaker 15: you know, that really stood out. I think the other
- 13:23Speaker 15: thing that stood out was the style of play that
- 13:27Speaker 15: we saw bits of last year, but we have not
- 13:29Speaker 15: seen in a while, and certainly not two games in
- 13:32Speaker 15: a row. And you know, Everett and I kept looking
- 13:34Speaker 15: at each other going, is this the way it's going
- 13:37Speaker 15: to go all season?
- 13:38Speaker 6: Like?
- 13:38Speaker 15: You know, it was one nothing there midway through the game,
- 13:40Speaker 15: and I don't think neither one of us expected it
- 13:43Speaker 15: to be that low scoring in either game. You got
- 13:46Speaker 15: a high power team like Vegas on one side that
- 13:48Speaker 15: has put up a lot of goals in their first
- 13:50Speaker 15: two games, and in the case of Anaheim, you know,
- 13:53Speaker 15: Seattle's played fairly well against them in the past year.
- 13:55Speaker 15: So to get a couple of low scoring games, I
- 13:59Speaker 15: think is a real cater of what we should expect
- 14:01Speaker 15: on a go forward basis.
- 14:03Speaker 10: And I like the style.
- 14:04Speaker 14: I like the style like you talked about al Anie,
- 14:07Speaker 14: I feel like both. Like both those games for Seattle,
- 14:10Speaker 14: it was defensive, it was attentive to the details. Outside
- 14:15Speaker 14: of that first period against Anaheim, the starts were great.
- 14:20Speaker 14: The just everything that we've seen in camp and through
- 14:24Speaker 14: preseason the Kraken wanted to execute, they did.
- 14:27Speaker 10: It, I thought, at a very high level for those
- 14:30Speaker 10: two games.
- 14:31Speaker 1: We're gonna get to our three stars of the week,
- 14:33Speaker 1: and this is going to be a routine thing for
- 14:34Speaker 1: us each and every time at the very end here
- 14:37Speaker 1: of the show, before we add on more and more
- 14:40Speaker 1: and more. And this is what excites me about this
- 14:42Speaker 1: show as a fact that we're going to open this
- 14:44Speaker 1: up here to figures all across the world of hockey
- 14:47Speaker 1: to get their input, their scope of things and kind
- 14:49Speaker 1: of help us shape with what's ahead here for the
- 14:52Speaker 1: Kraken as they get set for Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto.
- 14:55Speaker 1: And you guys, we have a lot of names here
- 14:57Speaker 1: to get to as far as who made this happen.
- 15:00Speaker 1: And I think you know, you get an opening night
- 15:02Speaker 1: win against Anaheim, it was important, I think just for
- 15:06Speaker 1: the fact that you have a brand new head coach
- 15:08Speaker 1: in a brand new way to play there's no tiptoeing
- 15:11Speaker 1: into the water here about this, and you want to
- 15:14Speaker 1: show your own home crowd what you're all about. The
- 15:16Speaker 1: Cracket had never won an openy night game in franchise
- 15:19Speaker 1: history until this last week Thursday against the Ducks, and
- 15:24Speaker 1: then to do this again against Vegas. For me, team
- 15:28Speaker 1: identity is one thing. When you can establish it, it's
- 15:31Speaker 1: another win. Through just two games, you are done asking
- 15:36Speaker 1: any kind of questions as far as what this team
- 15:39Speaker 1: is all about. And I think maybe last year, several
- 15:43Speaker 1: months even prior to that, there are still many asking
- 15:46Speaker 1: the questions about this team. What are they? Who are they?
- 15:50Speaker 1: What are they all about? I think through two games
- 15:53Speaker 1: we're learning awfully fast what the Seattle Cracket are all about.
- 15:58Speaker 15: Yeah, And I think that in addition that, Mike, you're
- 16:01Speaker 15: you're also seeing a team that's on the same page
- 16:04Speaker 15: right from the start, like they believe, they believe in
- 16:07Speaker 15: what what coach coach l Lane Lambert is telling them,
- 16:10Speaker 15: what he's installing right now. As far as the structure
- 16:12Speaker 15: there there there there isn't any question about you know,
- 16:15Speaker 15: I don't think this is the right way to go
- 16:17Speaker 15: or I'm not sure where I'm supposed to be. You
- 16:18Speaker 15: can see they're all pulling the same direction. I think
- 16:21Speaker 15: when you get the guys doing that each and every shift,
- 16:24Speaker 15: you start to see that structure really take shape and
- 16:28Speaker 15: and and have the impact that you've seen over those
- 16:30Speaker 15: first two games.
- 16:32Speaker 14: I like, uh, you know, I I I agree with
- 16:34Speaker 14: you there, Mike for a little bit in the sense of, like, yes,
- 16:38Speaker 14: it's been two games. I like what I see from
- 16:40Speaker 14: this team, but you know, I really want to see
- 16:44Speaker 14: them do it consistently, right. I mean, this is going
- 16:47Speaker 14: to be a very rough road trip, and you've got
- 16:51Speaker 14: what five out of the six games against playoff teams
- 16:54Speaker 14: from last year. You come back home with Edmonton and
- 16:58Speaker 14: the Rangers and Montreal, so you've got some opponents. I'm
- 17:03Speaker 14: gonna I'm gonna wait until Thanksgiving, maybe a little bit
- 17:07Speaker 14: before Thanksgiving, to say, man, this is guaranteed what we're
- 17:10Speaker 14: gonna get.
- 17:11Speaker 10: This is what we should get every night. I'll say that.
- 17:13Speaker 14: But I do think that these first two games they
- 17:16Speaker 14: offer a really good insight into how this team wants
- 17:22Speaker 14: to play. But I want to see them do it
- 17:24Speaker 14: for ten games, for fifteen games before we start saying, man,
- 17:28Speaker 14: this cracking team is guaranteed this style, right, And.
- 17:33Speaker 1: I think also what you want to get to analty
- 17:36Speaker 1: this up for you as well, is it's one thing
- 17:38Speaker 1: to establish your identity. And to your point, we know
- 17:41Speaker 1: what this team is gonna be all about. Now, it's
- 17:44Speaker 1: gonna be all about trying to put this into motion consistently,
- 17:48Speaker 1: over and over and over. And can you size your
- 17:52Speaker 1: game up against some of the big dogs in this league,
- 17:55Speaker 1: which we'll see plenty of here in the next two
- 17:58Speaker 1: to three weeks.
- 17:59Speaker 15: Yeah, I would say, you know, added on to whatever
- 18:02Speaker 15: just mentioned there in terms of you know, drawing a
- 18:04Speaker 15: line the sand and saying, hey, I can go with this,
- 18:07Speaker 15: has been consistent after this date. I think the other
- 18:10Speaker 15: thing is is that what Laanne Lambert mentioned if anybody
- 18:13Speaker 15: saw the postgame discussion in the scrum, he talked about
- 18:20Speaker 15: playing this way but not always winning, right. And so
- 18:24Speaker 15: to your point, Everett, you might get ten games in,
- 18:26Speaker 15: but if you're six and four or seven and three,
- 18:30Speaker 15: as long as they're playing the same way every single game,
- 18:34Speaker 15: then to me, that's what consistency is, isn't necessarily winning
- 18:37Speaker 15: all ten of those games.
- 18:39Speaker 14: And that's that's so true because I feel like with
- 18:42Speaker 14: a brand new coach with new faces, you're trying to
- 18:47Speaker 14: play a new style.
- 18:49Speaker 10: Winning obviously is the goal, but I want to see consistency.
- 18:53Speaker 14: I want to see this team playing the same way
- 18:57Speaker 14: four out of every five games, right, not out of
- 19:00Speaker 14: every ten games, you don't.
- 19:02Speaker 10: You know?
- 19:02Speaker 14: We saw them take the first period off against Anaheim
- 19:06Speaker 14: and they bounced back through the next five periods with
- 19:09Speaker 14: some of the best hockey we've seen in two years.
- 19:11Speaker 10: So I'm with you on that one.
- 19:14Speaker 1: Let's review first game against Anaheim. That was again a
- 19:18Speaker 1: three to one win, the debut of two coaches behind
- 19:21Speaker 1: their own bench, and plenty of turnover once again to
- 19:23Speaker 1: the NHL nine teams getting new coaches from this last offseason.
- 19:27Speaker 1: It was Lane Lambert against Joel Quinnville, and the first
- 19:31Speaker 1: period it was frightening because you're thinking, oh boy, how
- 19:34Speaker 1: long is this going to go on for? I mean,
- 19:35Speaker 1: Anaheim looks all greased up, ready to go. They've got
- 19:40Speaker 1: young players who are ready to pop this year in
- 19:42Speaker 1: this league, and it might be a long night if
- 19:45Speaker 1: we're seeing this kind of first period play out. But
- 19:47Speaker 1: you began to see I think a little bit of
- 19:49Speaker 1: the dial turn the other way toward the Kraken and
- 19:53Speaker 1: then by period three they got their game in motion
- 19:57Speaker 1: and they got a pretty big insurance goal for the
- 19:59Speaker 1: Matty Venier's life, which I think was going to be
- 20:01Speaker 1: an omen here for the Vegas game, but once it
- 20:03Speaker 1: got through tons of duck pressure, a one nothing lead
- 20:07Speaker 1: of vaporating into a one to one tie. You can
- 20:10Speaker 1: thank Joey to Cord here for this. I think the
- 20:13Speaker 1: third period was their best of the entire night, and
- 20:16Speaker 1: that was a hint from Lane Lambert where they got
- 20:18Speaker 1: puck possession, they got a big goal early, and they
- 20:21Speaker 1: also had limited looks on the cord.
- 20:24Speaker 15: Yeah, I think the biggest difference between Game one and
- 20:27Speaker 15: Game two is the more complete game, if you will.
- 20:31Speaker 15: You know, we talked about that first period with Anaheim.
- 20:34Speaker 15: We didn't see that as much with the Vegas. It
- 20:36Speaker 15: was the same shift in and shift out, where you know,
- 20:38Speaker 15: they were tracking pucks, they were tracking opposing players, they
- 20:43Speaker 15: were stealing pucks, playing physical. Again, they played physical in
- 20:47Speaker 15: the Anaheim game as well, but a lot of that
- 20:49Speaker 15: had to do with that first period not having the puck.
- 20:51Speaker 15: I think it was different with the Vegas game, where
- 20:53Speaker 15: it was sixty minutes of physical hockey. So if we
- 20:57Speaker 15: liked progression progression from game one to game two thumbs up.
- 21:01Speaker 15: What does game three hold We'll know in a few days.
- 21:04Speaker 10: Yeah, they got better as the games went on.
- 21:06Speaker 14: And I also one thing that I noticed that I
- 21:09Speaker 14: was watching for was defensively, they really pushed both Anaheim
- 21:15Speaker 14: and Vegas more to the outsides, like there were hardly
- 21:19Speaker 14: any opportunities, especially in that Vegas game when you think
- 21:22Speaker 14: of Hurdle and Icele and Marner and whatever, you didn't
- 21:29Speaker 14: see a lot of those big guns getting a ton
- 21:33Speaker 14: of great a's. I can probably recall three four plays
- 21:39Speaker 14: for those guys that Joey had to make a difficult
- 21:44Speaker 14: save on. So defensively, I thought was some of the
- 21:47Speaker 14: best hockey that we've seen because they really did a
- 21:50Speaker 14: nice job of clamping down on those stars.
- 21:53Speaker 15: Well not only that too, but the goal they got
- 21:55Speaker 15: was the power play and it was a great goal.
- 21:57Speaker 15: It was a great power play goal. Honestly, got it,
- 21:59Speaker 15: honest But that was the only way that the cracking
- 22:03Speaker 15: broke in that game was giving up a power play goal.
- 22:05Speaker 6: And I think that's that's to be said.
- 22:07Speaker 1: I think for Vegas. And we'll get to this now.
- 22:09Speaker 1: As far as the total review, of all of this here.
- 22:13Speaker 1: The first period we mentioned, space was at a complete
- 22:16Speaker 1: premium and you can kind of feel that maybe I
- 22:19Speaker 1: think in a sense from Saturday, there was one way
- 22:22Speaker 1: to play against Vegas and it had to be that way.
- 22:25Speaker 1: You had to be comfortable playing in tight spaces, a
- 22:28Speaker 1: lot of ship and chase. You can't force the issue
- 22:30Speaker 1: offensively and limit your looks on Joey to court. And
- 22:34Speaker 1: I mean, you guys mentioned the power play goal Vegas.
- 22:37Speaker 1: You're gonna give them chances, they're they're going to break
- 22:39Speaker 1: on through. But I said this during during the postgame show,
- 22:43Speaker 1: the you had plenty of opportunities here, but can you
- 22:47Speaker 1: limit your mistakes as well? And the mistakes were a few,
- 22:51Speaker 1: And to kind of tack on what you were saying
- 22:53Speaker 1: as well, I may be counted one shift maybe where
- 22:58Speaker 1: the crack and were hammed in their own zone. Yeah,
- 23:00Speaker 1: and when we get toward you know, the third period,
- 23:04Speaker 1: it's a tight game and who you put out matters
- 23:08Speaker 1: a ton. Can you trust them in a tight game?
- 23:12Speaker 1: I really thought they pitched a perfect game as far
- 23:15Speaker 1: as decision making and making sure that they weren't getting
- 23:18Speaker 1: himed in and Joey wasn't under siege. That was so
- 23:21Speaker 1: key for me because I look at the clock and
- 23:24Speaker 1: with about five minutes left in a tie game, it
- 23:27Speaker 1: might as well be overtime. And there there's one thing
- 23:30Speaker 1: to say about Maddy Beniers in his line, and Maddy
- 23:33Speaker 1: was a rock star on Saturday, but to see him
- 23:36Speaker 1: get trusted over and over with end zone face offs,
- 23:40Speaker 1: offensive zone, defensive zone, really I think is indicative of
- 23:44Speaker 1: the trust that he's learned, he's earned from from from
- 23:47Speaker 1: Wayne Lambert.
- 23:48Speaker 14: Yeah, and I think at the end of the game
- 23:50Speaker 14: you talk about withstanding that push. Vegas did turn it
- 23:54Speaker 14: up a little bit later in that game, but I
- 23:56Speaker 14: mean that trust in the Benier's line. I mean I
- 23:59Speaker 14: felt like every other shift that line was over the
- 24:02Speaker 14: boards and doing something well. So they withstood the pushy,
- 24:09Speaker 14: they were able to bend, they didn't break. I love
- 24:12Speaker 14: saying that, and ultimately you get two points.
- 24:16Speaker 15: Yeah, I agree with you, Mike. I think that there
- 24:19Speaker 15: were certainly spots in there where you know their their
- 24:22Speaker 15: will was tested and it got dicey a couple of times.
- 24:26Speaker 15: But that's when you got to lean on thirty five
- 24:28Speaker 15: a little bit. He came up with some big saves.
- 24:30Speaker 15: I would say bigger saves in the Vegas game than
- 24:32Speaker 15: he had to make in the Anaheim game.
- 24:34Speaker 1: How about that power play goal for Maddie. It's not
- 24:36Speaker 1: just a deek that he had, but as well the
- 24:38Speaker 1: everly pass. And then, as their old friend Eddie Oldchik says,
- 24:42Speaker 1: NetFront presence, presence.
- 24:46Speaker 10: Why do they always fly by? Just stop on the net,
- 24:49Speaker 10: Just go to the net.
- 24:54Speaker 1: How about over time as well. I went back and
- 24:56Speaker 1: took a look at and it really confirmed my suspicions.
- 25:01Speaker 1: I love the puck possession part of this, but also
- 25:03Speaker 1: the fact that you got all four centers ice time
- 25:06Speaker 1: in overtime and they all did their job for the
- 25:09Speaker 1: most part as far as controlling the pace, controlling tempo
- 25:13Speaker 1: as well.
- 25:14Speaker 15: Yeah, again, it seemed like they definitely had a plan
- 25:17Speaker 15: that they wanted to execute on, which was control the puck.
- 25:21Speaker 15: But when they didn't have the puck, obviously they gotta
- 25:24Speaker 15: they get they got to settle into some defense. But
- 25:26Speaker 15: again it's not that sit back and wait defense. It's
- 25:29Speaker 15: it's an attack defense, Like why not play defense at
- 25:32Speaker 15: they're end of the ice rather than your own end
- 25:33Speaker 15: of the ice. Maybe they make they give a turnover
- 25:36Speaker 15: and you get a scoring chance. So uh, but there
- 25:39Speaker 15: wasn't much of it in overtime. I haven't looked at
- 25:41Speaker 15: the exact numbers, but it feels like three plus minutes,
- 25:45Speaker 15: maybe close to four. Seattle have that puck.
- 25:48Speaker 14: Well, remember that's what La Lambert said in his introduct
- 25:51Speaker 14: to your press conference. He goes, in order to have
- 25:53Speaker 14: a good offense, you need to get the puck in
- 25:56Speaker 14: your defensive zone. It starts your offensive structure and your
- 26:00Speaker 14: offensive ability starts in your zone. And you saw a
- 26:04Speaker 14: lot of that, especially late in that game against Vegas.
- 26:08Speaker 1: We're gonna get to Nick alberga host of Leaf's Morning
- 26:11Speaker 1: take here in just a bit too preview the six
- 26:12Speaker 1: game road trip coming up again the crack and opening
- 26:15Speaker 1: up the trip. This is pretty much into the lions
- 26:18Speaker 1: Den opening night at Bell Center coming up tomorrow night
- 26:22Speaker 1: again four pm. Everett Now on the call. I'll be
- 26:25Speaker 1: with you from thirty two Bar and Grill. More info
- 26:27Speaker 1: coming up at the very end here of this drop.
- 26:29Speaker 1: But then Thursday in Ottawa a playoff team. Last year
- 26:33Speaker 1: October eighteenth, Saturday in Toronto, Hockey Night in Canada, another
- 26:39Speaker 1: playoff team, and yet they still look very good even
- 26:42Speaker 1: without Mitch Martyrs. So before we get to nick Alberga,
- 26:45Speaker 1: a few notes we'll cover here on this trip. First off,
- 26:49Speaker 1: there's twelve points on the table. How many for a
- 26:52Speaker 1: satisfactory road trip here at this point?
- 26:56Speaker 10: I think, I mean, if you can come home either.
- 26:59Speaker 14: With an overall record of five hundred or better, or
- 27:04Speaker 14: you finished this trip three two and one, you know,
- 27:10Speaker 14: four to one and one, or whatever.
- 27:12Speaker 10: The case may be.
- 27:12Speaker 14: If you can come back home at or above five
- 27:15Speaker 14: hundred against those teams, then I would consider this a success.
- 27:19Speaker 14: And even in those losses, if you can still play
- 27:24Speaker 14: that consistent game that we were just talking about, that
- 27:28Speaker 14: for me would be successful.
- 27:30Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 27:30Speaker 15: I think it's you know, win the games you should win,
- 27:34Speaker 15: and I think they should win the Philadelphia and Washington games.
- 27:36Speaker 15: But it is the first back to back test, and
- 27:38Speaker 15: so you know that's going to be interesting to see
- 27:40Speaker 15: how that goes. But you should win those games. But
- 27:43Speaker 15: then to Evers' point, you steal maybe some points or
- 27:46Speaker 15: a win out of the others. I think above five
- 27:51Speaker 15: hundred is a successful trip for sure.
- 27:53Speaker 1: I think what's also nice too is that you look
- 27:55Speaker 1: at this from from the scope and that there's going
- 27:57Speaker 1: to be so many back to backs because we have
- 27:59Speaker 1: the condensed schedule, the Olympic break thrown in as well,
- 28:02Speaker 1: there's only one set that you've got to play and
- 28:04Speaker 1: it's not that taxing, I should say, getting from point
- 28:08Speaker 1: A to point B, and that being Philadelphia this next
- 28:10Speaker 1: Monday and then Washington the very next night.
- 28:14Speaker 14: Yeah, I mean, oh sorry, I was gonna say, like,
- 28:17Speaker 14: you got fourteen, You got fourteen of them. I don't
- 28:20Speaker 14: need to tell you last year zero to eleven outscored
- 28:23Speaker 14: forty nine to nineteen in game twos of back to backs.
- 28:27Speaker 14: So I mean, this is gonna be your first test
- 28:30Speaker 14: of back to backs, and you.
- 28:33Speaker 10: Know, we're we're we're gonna.
- 28:34Speaker 14: Talk about who's gonna be in goalie for in goal
- 28:38Speaker 14: for that game. Are we going to see Grubauer or Murray?
- 28:43Speaker 14: How is that gonna work? So, I mean, I'm with you,
- 28:45Speaker 14: not looking too far ahead, but that's gonna be a
- 28:48Speaker 14: tough stretch of games. But also going back to this week,
- 28:52Speaker 14: I'm looking at the Ottawa series. Cracking are one and
- 28:55Speaker 14: four in their last five against Ottawa and they've not
- 28:58Speaker 14: scored a goal in this building in three years.
- 29:02Speaker 15: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, wait. You know, we talk
- 29:07Speaker 15: about Montreal's home opener. We talk about Hockey Night in Canada,
- 29:10Speaker 15: but you can't not talk about Ottawa for those very reasons.
- 29:14Speaker 15: That is that is going to be just as difficult
- 29:16Speaker 15: of a game for all the reasons you just said.
- 29:18Speaker 6: Efforts.
- 29:18Speaker 15: So you know, these these next three, like you know,
- 29:21Speaker 15: you obviously one game at a time and all that
- 29:23Speaker 15: cliche stuff, but these next three, they're going to be
- 29:26Speaker 15: a mountain to climb.
- 29:27Speaker 1: So it brings us here to the question every he
- 29:29Speaker 1: kind of teased this year as far as goaltending, and
- 29:31Speaker 1: they're going to go through the three goalie system right now.
- 29:34Speaker 1: That's the way things fell into place from training camp
- 29:37Speaker 1: with Joey to Cord, Philip Grubauer and Matt Murray, the
- 29:41Speaker 1: latter two getting split time as a backup behind a
- 29:44Speaker 1: Cord who's going to get a book of playing time.
- 29:46Speaker 1: Make no mistake here for this season, as long as
- 29:48Speaker 1: the Cord knock on Woodstay's healthy, he's been one of
- 29:51Speaker 1: the top goalies so far first couple of games in
- 29:55Speaker 1: this league already. But then when you get to Washington
- 29:58Speaker 1: and then Bears, the question houses all going to shake
- 30:01Speaker 1: out because Murray, Grubauer, for the most part how do
- 30:06Speaker 1: you judge preseason? How do you split the balance here?
- 30:09Speaker 1: And I think a lot of folks are curious what
- 30:13Speaker 1: to expect when you've got to find playing time for
- 30:16Speaker 1: these two goaltenders right and behind the cord.
- 30:21Speaker 15: Yeah, I mean, I think all we can do at
- 30:24Speaker 15: this point Mike is theorized and I think that you know,
- 30:28Speaker 15: like we talked about, fourteen back to backs is going
- 30:31Speaker 15: to play into this, the first one being next week
- 30:33Speaker 15: or the week after this week. That's got to be
- 30:36Speaker 15: a situation where Murray or Grubauer plays who I don't know,
- 30:42Speaker 15: and I don't know if we'll see either one of
- 30:44Speaker 15: them before then. So if I was guessing that's the
- 30:49Speaker 15: way I would expect to see it roll out, is
- 30:51Speaker 15: that Joey probably starts the next three and then probably
- 30:55Speaker 15: Philadelphia or Washington and you see one of the other
- 30:58Speaker 15: two play the other other game in that back to back.
- 31:02Speaker 14: I feel like there's going to have to be a
- 31:06Speaker 14: decision made at some point. And this is this is
- 31:09Speaker 14: not casting any type of shade or aspersions toward Grubauer
- 31:16Speaker 14: or Matt Murray. They're both NHL goalies. They're both here
- 31:19Speaker 14: for a reason. However, we've seen the three goalie system
- 31:24Speaker 14: in the past, right here in Montreal, right up the street.
- 31:27Speaker 14: We've seen it other places. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
- 31:33Speaker 14: And I feel like if you're the Kraken, and I
- 31:36Speaker 14: don't envy Jason or Lane or Ron or whoever is
- 31:43Speaker 14: is ultimately making those decisions. But I do think there
- 31:47Speaker 14: needs to be a decision made in the next month, right,
- 31:52Speaker 14: I mean, are we going into Thanksgiving? Are we going
- 31:58Speaker 14: into the Christmas break with three goalies on the roster?
- 32:00Speaker 10: Still? I don't know.
- 32:02Speaker 14: I do think that you're going to have to play
- 32:05Speaker 14: all three of them, and you're going to have to,
- 32:08Speaker 14: you know, maybe use this Actually these first few games
- 32:12Speaker 14: is like an extended training camp if you will, to
- 32:14Speaker 14: get one or two final looks at these goalies. But
- 32:18Speaker 14: I would have to imagine there's there's going to be
- 32:22Speaker 14: a decision made within the next four to six weeks,
- 32:26Speaker 14: I would think, if not sooner, about the goaltending situation
- 32:31Speaker 14: and only caring.
- 32:32Speaker 15: To Yeah, and part of it might be, you know,
- 32:36Speaker 15: those games that are played over that next month. Yeah,
- 32:39Speaker 15: maybe it's a bit of an audition as well. You know,
- 32:42Speaker 15: if other teams come calling, I, you know, I you
- 32:45Speaker 15: don't want to. You don't want to think about it
- 32:46Speaker 15: that way necessarily, but that could be part of it, and.
- 32:50Speaker 10: Said, all we can do is speculate.
- 32:52Speaker 14: All we can do is it's their eyes, right, So
- 32:54Speaker 14: we're just yea, we're three talking heads right.
- 32:56Speaker 15: Here, three talking heads imagining what what's possible.
- 33:01Speaker 1: Hey, we can put a microphone in front of the
- 33:02Speaker 1: powers that being asked, how's this going to play out?
- 33:04Speaker 1: And the answer we're gonna get.
- 33:05Speaker 10: I'm gonna let I'm.
- 33:09Speaker 15: Knock on wrong's door.
- 33:10Speaker 10: Yep, yep.
- 33:12Speaker 6: Here here.
- 33:13Speaker 1: So so our next burning question and we're gonna and
- 33:16Speaker 1: this is gonna become a conversation piece that that is
- 33:18Speaker 1: going to get louder and louder for as long as
- 33:21Speaker 1: this continues. With the lineup, you're two and zero, and
- 33:26Speaker 1: in theory, there is little reason to change a thing
- 33:29Speaker 1: because the way the Crackn played, starting realistically period three
- 33:34Speaker 1: against Anaheimen all the way through against Vegas, they were terrific.
- 33:38Speaker 1: But now you've got a nineteen year old prodigy sitting
- 33:42Speaker 1: on the sidelines in Berkeley Catton who made this roster,
- 33:45Speaker 1: and folks now are starting to get a little bit
- 33:47Speaker 1: louder of when does he play this is part of
- 33:50Speaker 1: the conversation. And Lane Lambert did say a few days ago,
- 33:55Speaker 1: he's got a way to turn. There is a patience
- 33:57Speaker 1: thing here with this Number one. You gotta find I
- 34:01Speaker 1: think the ideal spot for him to play. You don't
- 34:03Speaker 1: want to throw him to the Lions. Number two, it
- 34:06Speaker 1: matters who he plays with because can he be effective?
- 34:09Speaker 1: And I think number three, if you're if you're winning,
- 34:12Speaker 1: white change.
- 34:14Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 34:15Speaker 14: A lot of coaches will tell you if it ain't broke,
- 34:17Speaker 14: don't fix it. Right, I will say this, It's only
- 34:20Speaker 14: been two games, right, Berkeley Gatton. He's here for a reason.
- 34:25Speaker 14: The coaches, the management, they believe in him. They feel
- 34:28Speaker 14: that he's he's ready for this challenge. Now what this
- 34:33Speaker 14: challenge ultimately will be is yet to be decided. Is
- 34:37Speaker 14: it going to be the nine games? You know? You
- 34:39Speaker 14: remember Leo Carlson with the Anaheim Ducks a few years ago, right,
- 34:45Speaker 14: and they they I think they gave him a cap
- 34:47Speaker 14: of fifty five games or.
- 34:48Speaker 1: Ad management is no longer part of the NBA now.
- 34:51Speaker 14: And they said, listen, you're young player. I don't care
- 34:55Speaker 14: if you score fifty five hat tricks. You're playing fifty
- 34:58Speaker 14: five games and not a single game more so, I
- 35:01Speaker 14: don't know what that what that conversation has been with
- 35:04Speaker 14: Berkeley Catton.
- 35:05Speaker 10: But he's still getting practice time.
- 35:07Speaker 12: You know.
- 35:08Speaker 14: We saw him on the plane coming in here, and
- 35:10Speaker 14: he's still very much in high spirit. He's not pouting,
- 35:13Speaker 14: he's not low as me. I'm not playing. He still
- 35:16Speaker 14: wants to get better, and that is it's good to
- 35:20Speaker 14: see from a young kid. And his attitude, as we've
- 35:23Speaker 14: seen ever since we talked to him after the draft
- 35:26Speaker 14: last year, has just been incredible. Just a phenomenal kid.
- 35:31Speaker 14: But he will play. Will it be on the road trip,
- 35:34Speaker 14: will it be back home, We don't know. But he's
- 35:37Speaker 14: with this team for now and he's doing everything in
- 35:40Speaker 14: his power to make that impression to say, hey, I'm
- 35:44Speaker 14: ready put me in coach.
- 35:46Speaker 15: Yeah, I think that, you know, with I don't know
- 35:49Speaker 15: two months and about thirty games between now and World Juniors.
- 35:52Speaker 15: Obviously he's not going to play thirty games, but he'll
- 35:55Speaker 15: probably play. Is his minimum that he could play. But
- 35:57Speaker 15: before then, and like Everett says, he's gonna be around
- 36:00Speaker 15: the team. He's going to be practicing, he's going to
- 36:03Speaker 15: be in medians, he's going to be learning he's going
- 36:05Speaker 15: to be working with with with Nate getting stronger, you know,
- 36:09Speaker 15: all the things that are building blocks for getting you know,
- 36:13Speaker 15: him ready to be an NHL player. And I think
- 36:15Speaker 15: that's the goal of the Cracking right now, is to
- 36:18Speaker 15: get him ready to be a full time NHL player.
- 36:22Speaker 15: Will they go back to junior again? Three talking heads here, probably,
- 36:27Speaker 15: but probably not until after World Juniors.
- 36:29Speaker 1: All right, for more conversation on what the crack and
- 36:32Speaker 1: are facing. From the likes of Lane Hudson in Montreal
- 36:35Speaker 1: to Austin Matthews in Toronto, we go right now to
- 36:38Speaker 1: the Beacon Plumbing Hotline joining us as Nick alberga host
- 36:42Speaker 1: of Leif's Morning Take, and he does some fantastic work
- 36:46Speaker 1: across the Eastern Conference, has done so for many years.
- 36:49Speaker 1: Glad to have him here joining us on Cracking Weekly. Nick,
- 36:52Speaker 1: Thank you for doing this here with us. First off,
- 36:54Speaker 1: I have to ask you, are we gonna come back
- 36:56Speaker 1: here and lay a friendly wager down at Mariners and
- 36:59Speaker 1: Blue Jays in the ALCS.
- 37:02Speaker 13: I think we have to, boys. I'm fired up. It's
- 37:05Speaker 13: been a great, great run for the Toronto Blue Jays
- 37:07Speaker 13: and we'll see what's next here in the CS.
- 37:09Speaker 10: I just want to.
- 37:09Speaker 14: See Vlatti keep hitting home runs. Oh my goodness, like
- 37:12Speaker 14: he is, just how is it watching? I know here
- 37:16Speaker 14: in Seattle it's been crazy. This whole town is Mariners obsessed.
- 37:22Speaker 14: It's got to be the same way in Toronto.
- 37:24Speaker 1: Oh, for sure.
- 37:25Speaker 13: An ideal setup I think in the CS would just
- 37:27Speaker 13: be a home run fest between Julio the big dumper
- 37:30Speaker 13: Vladi like that, that's the ideal conversation for all of us.
- 37:34Speaker 13: But it's been remarkable. I think it's intriguing. All season long.
- 37:38Speaker 13: We've been talking about this massive contract that the Blue
- 37:41Speaker 13: Jays gave Vladimir Guerrero, but he's been worth every penny
- 37:44Speaker 13: and then some like we haven't seen this from Vlatti
- 37:47Speaker 13: in his career. Like I'm not kidding. He's playing the
- 37:50Speaker 13: best baseball of his career at the most important time
- 37:53Speaker 13: for this franchise. So it's been very, very exciting to see.
- 37:56Speaker 13: I think you look at the numbers in the Division series.
- 37:58Speaker 13: I think it's important to stress too, he has owned
- 38:00Speaker 13: the New York Yankees throughout his career. But yeah, there's
- 38:03Speaker 13: the level of excitement. We haven't felt this in a
- 38:05Speaker 13: long long time in this market.
- 38:07Speaker 6: Guys.
- 38:07Speaker 1: Well, hey, I think the conversation when it revolves owned
- 38:09Speaker 1: the New York Yankees. We have a lot in common
- 38:12Speaker 1: here for these two markets where we all walk happy campers.
- 38:15Speaker 1: Let's jump into it here, Nick, to begin things, the
- 38:18Speaker 1: six game road trip with the Kraken underway. Montreal is first.
- 38:22Speaker 1: That is no slouch of a challenge their home opener Ottawa, Toronto, Philadelphia, Washington, Winnipeg.
- 38:29Speaker 1: My goodness, it is quite a run. But for what's
- 38:32Speaker 1: ahead here, are any of these teams surprising to you
- 38:36Speaker 1: with maybe the kind of challenge that they present the season?
- 38:40Speaker 13: Yeah, I mean that's quite a gauntlet. I think you
- 38:42Speaker 13: look at a road trip that's pretty hefty, especially in
- 38:45Speaker 13: the Eastern Conference. I mean, we could start with those
- 38:47Speaker 13: three Atlantic Division teams that you just referenced, and certainly,
- 38:50Speaker 13: you know, you look at the upstart Outawa Senators. I
- 38:52Speaker 13: have high hopes, high praise for that team this season
- 38:55Speaker 13: off to fairly decent start as well. But I think
- 38:58Speaker 13: you look at those three teams typically have lofty expectations
- 39:02Speaker 13: not only to make the playoffs, but actually do something
- 39:04Speaker 13: substantial in the playoffs. Like I think Montreal is a
- 39:06Speaker 13: team that's starting to build off and trying to build
- 39:08Speaker 13: off what they put forth last season. Now going from
- 39:11Speaker 13: the hunter to the Hunted, it'll be intriguing that facet
- 39:15Speaker 13: Ottawa finally makes the playoffs for the first time in
- 39:18Speaker 13: a long period of time. Can they build off that?
- 39:20Speaker 13: And the team I cover on a daily basis, the
- 39:22Speaker 13: Toronto Maple Leafs lose Mitch Marner, but they think they're
- 39:25Speaker 13: going to be harder to play against in the Stanley
- 39:27Speaker 13: Cup playoffs. So I like it from the Seattle perspective,
- 39:31Speaker 13: it gives you an early gauge if you're Laye Lambert
- 39:33Speaker 13: in company of what you truly are, and I think
- 39:35Speaker 13: that team is up to the test. I do think
- 39:37Speaker 13: in general people will sleep on Seattle this season, and
- 39:40Speaker 13: that's a really good you know, I just talked about Montreal.
- 39:43Speaker 13: I think it's good to be that type of team
- 39:45Speaker 13: because people maybe don't give you your best their best
- 39:49Speaker 13: on a nightly basis.
- 39:50Speaker 14: You know, it's funny you were talking to you saying that,
- 39:52Speaker 14: because I feel like this, this cracking team is going
- 39:54Speaker 14: to be a lot better than people give them credit for.
- 39:57Speaker 14: But what are you hearing about out Seattle? Out East?
- 40:01Speaker 14: I mean, you've got Lane Lambert, who you're very familiar
- 40:04Speaker 14: with and when the Crack can go back to Canada,
- 40:07Speaker 14: he's gonna be They're gonna be facing three teams and
- 40:10Speaker 14: he played on a regular basis. What are they what
- 40:12Speaker 14: are they saying.
- 40:13Speaker 10: About this cracking team?
- 40:15Speaker 14: Uh in in the center of the hockey universe in Toronto.
- 40:18Speaker 13: Yeah, no, it's funny, Like you know, for me, I'm
- 40:21Speaker 13: not a regular hockey fan, as you guys know, I
- 40:23Speaker 13: watch a lot of hockey. I think people sleep on
- 40:26Speaker 13: the name Joey Decord. I think you start there when
- 40:29Speaker 13: when you can get saves. It is so uplifting for
- 40:32Speaker 13: a hockey club. And I'm sure Lane Lambert wakes up
- 40:34Speaker 13: on a daily basis and he's like, man, I have
- 40:37Speaker 13: Joey Decord as my number one. And you know, it's
- 40:40Speaker 13: been a turbulent stretch for this Cracket team in the
- 40:42Speaker 13: last couple of years, like the Grubauer contract. Let's be
- 40:44Speaker 13: Frank has not worked out for that team. But I
- 40:47Speaker 13: think seeing the progression of Joey Decord has been massive.
- 40:50Speaker 13: I think starting there, I think a lot of people
- 40:53Speaker 13: uh like, they're not sleeping on the sky anymore. And
- 40:55Speaker 13: I think he's shown it early on in this season.
- 40:58Speaker 13: The Blue line I think is way more more mobile
- 41:00Speaker 13: and way more stronger than people would suggest, even with
- 41:03Speaker 13: Brandon on tour. I know a bit banged up to
- 41:05Speaker 13: start the year, but I think he has a much
- 41:07Speaker 13: better second year than first year with the Krack and
- 41:09Speaker 13: can really move the puck, shoots right like He's a
- 41:11Speaker 13: huge asset. Vince Stun's another guy. I think any team
- 41:15Speaker 13: that can move the puck, I think is gonna be
- 41:16Speaker 13: a problem for opponents. And when you have d like
- 41:18Speaker 13: that that are mobile and steady and they have some
- 41:20Speaker 13: size as well, I think that's massive. I think the
- 41:24Speaker 13: big question for me is like the offense, where's it
- 41:27Speaker 13: gonna come from? Up front? I know they have some
- 41:30Speaker 13: really really strong players. I just think they need guys
- 41:32Speaker 13: like Benier's and Shane right to take that next step
- 41:35Speaker 13: in their careers. And if they do, I think Seattle's
- 41:37Speaker 13: gonna be a really good spot here.
- 41:39Speaker 6: Nick.
- 41:39Speaker 15: I hate to look too far ahead in the schedule,
- 41:41Speaker 15: but big Knight in Toronto coming up for the Crack,
- 41:45Speaker 15: and you know it's a hockey night in Canada. You
- 41:48Speaker 15: mentioned the Marner deal. Obviously that overshadows anything else Toronto
- 41:52Speaker 15: did in the offseason, but talk a little bit about
- 41:55Speaker 15: what else Toronto has done to make them a harder
- 41:58Speaker 15: team to play against, to make them a team that's
- 41:59Speaker 15: gonna go a little deeper this year.
- 42:01Speaker 13: Yeah, I can tell you first and foremost one guy
- 42:03Speaker 13: who probably has that game circled as the captain or
- 42:06Speaker 13: the head coach of year crack and Lane Lambert. Of course,
- 42:08Speaker 13: as we just talked about, returning to Toronto was one
- 42:11Speaker 13: short year, so we'll see if I can get him
- 42:12Speaker 13: on least warning take the tea that game up. But
- 42:14Speaker 13: I think from a Toronto perspective, it's like a whole
- 42:18Speaker 13: body approach. If you will, I think you look at
- 42:20Speaker 13: Craig Bruby and what he's put forth early on in
- 42:23Speaker 13: his tenure as the head coach, it's gonna be like
- 42:26Speaker 13: they play very direct, very linear, very north south with purpose.
- 42:30Speaker 13: I think it's a lot different than we've seen in
- 42:32Speaker 13: the Maple Leafs for the last ten years, we'll say,
- 42:35Speaker 13: especially under Sheldon Keith. Yeah, it's tough losing a guy
- 42:38Speaker 13: of the oak of Mitch Marner. You're never truly going
- 42:41Speaker 13: to replace that. But they have brought in some guys
- 42:43Speaker 13: who I think could add depth up front. They're a
- 42:46Speaker 13: bit banged up to start this season. Scott Lawden, who
- 42:49Speaker 13: they picked up from Philadelphia last year's trade deadline, is
- 42:51Speaker 13: hurt right now, so it's throwing the lines in a
- 42:53Speaker 13: bit of a blender. But they got a nice mix
- 42:55Speaker 13: of like skill players and grinder type guys like they
- 42:59Speaker 13: picked up Nickel Wise. You guys see a lot out
- 43:01Speaker 13: west with the you know, played a lot with the
- 43:03Speaker 13: Vegas gold Knights, won a Stanley Cup. Mattis Mitchelli, who
- 43:06Speaker 13: spent the last couple of years with the Arizona organization
- 43:09Speaker 13: now with Utah, was into the lineup last year, but
- 43:12Speaker 13: suddenly he finds himself in a garden seat role in
- 43:15Speaker 13: the top six. Has played a lot early on in
- 43:18Speaker 13: the preseason and the regular season with Austin Matthews and
- 43:21Speaker 13: Matthew Knyes. So you obviously take a big gun out
- 43:24Speaker 13: of that lineup with Mitch Marner. But I think their
- 43:27Speaker 13: hope is that they have more depth and we'll see
- 43:29Speaker 13: long term. I think the Maple Leafs are probably in
- 43:31Speaker 13: select company in this league, where it's more so what
- 43:34Speaker 13: they do in the Stanley Cup playoffs in the regular season.
- 43:37Speaker 1: Nick Alberga joining us here hosts of Leif's morning take
- 43:39Speaker 1: on Crack and Weekly Nick, we talk about Austin Matthews,
- 43:43Speaker 1: the headliner of this Leafs roster for years upon years,
- 43:46Speaker 1: but yet also William nieland are a big part of
- 43:48Speaker 1: this mix. Morgan Riley, many many are State had a
- 43:51Speaker 1: great first game as well out of the shoot. But
- 43:54Speaker 1: I'm curious about a guy like Matthew Nis given the
- 43:56Speaker 1: big contract, twenty nine goals last season, and I once
- 44:00Speaker 1: heard just about his stature. He might weigh about two
- 44:04Speaker 1: fifty and his neck might weigh about two ted. I mean,
- 44:06Speaker 1: he is hard to knock off the puck, But what
- 44:09Speaker 1: are expectations out there for a guy like Ni's this.
- 44:12Speaker 13: Season through the roof? I mean, this guy is such
- 44:16Speaker 13: a throwback guy, and I'm glad you brought up his
- 44:18Speaker 13: neck every time I look at him, like I in person,
- 44:20Speaker 13: Like I'm a big dude too, I'm six three, two fifteen,
- 44:23Speaker 13: Like he's just really hefty, and he looks a good
- 44:25Speaker 13: guy who's a bulldog. Like I think he's such a
- 44:28Speaker 13: throwback in the fact that he plays like that modern
- 44:31Speaker 13: style where he can score goals, but he can also
- 44:34Speaker 13: you know, I think he's your prototypical power forward. Maybe
- 44:36Speaker 13: when you look at him you don't suggest that, but
- 44:38Speaker 13: I think the physicality, I think the way he plays
- 44:41Speaker 13: in the Stanley Cup playoffs as well. He plays his
- 44:43Speaker 13: best hockey at the most important time, which I think
- 44:46Speaker 13: is really endearing to the mayple Leaf fan base, considering
- 44:49Speaker 13: what we've seen in the last ten to fifteen years
- 44:51Speaker 13: where it seems like the star players they play their
- 44:53Speaker 13: worst hockey at the most important time. But I think
- 44:56Speaker 13: this is guy. You know, it's it's massive for a
- 44:58Speaker 13: guy like Matthew Nyes when a guy like Mitch Marner
- 45:01Speaker 13: leaves and then you get that contract, Can you step
- 45:03Speaker 13: up to the plate? Can you you be a big
- 45:05Speaker 13: dog for this team? That that will be a question.
- 45:08Speaker 13: You know that top line in general, that's a pretty
- 45:10Speaker 13: significant hole now without Marner. So can Austin Matthews do
- 45:14Speaker 13: his thing? Matthew Nyes and short order in a couple
- 45:17Speaker 13: of years here in the NHL is elevated from like
- 45:19Speaker 13: a you know, a bottom six guy to a firm
- 45:22Speaker 13: piece on that top line. Can he take that next step?
- 45:25Speaker 13: Obviously you know he floats thirty goals last year, but
- 45:28Speaker 13: can you get to that forty goal Plato? I think
- 45:30Speaker 13: this Mayle team could need that. But there's a reason
- 45:33Speaker 13: why this guy is a fan favorite. He's just a
- 45:35Speaker 13: delight to watch. Guys.
- 45:37Speaker 14: You know, it's funny you talk about Matthew and I
- 45:38Speaker 14: is trying to get to forty here in Seattle, the
- 45:41Speaker 14: three of us, we genuinely seem to think that this
- 45:45Speaker 14: could be a thirty goal season for a Shane Right
- 45:48Speaker 14: or a Manny Veneer. So it's good to know all
- 45:49Speaker 14: those expectations are the same. Speaking of expectations, we all
- 45:54Speaker 14: know where Toronto is. We all know the hump the
- 45:56Speaker 14: Leafs are trying to get over getting out of the
- 45:59Speaker 14: second round, getting to a final, winning that first Cup
- 46:02Speaker 14: since the sixties. But when you look at Montreal and Ottawa,
- 46:07Speaker 14: two different teams in terms of makeup, they've got some superstars.
- 46:11Speaker 14: They're trying to get over their own respective humps. What
- 46:15Speaker 14: is the next step for both of those teams to
- 46:18Speaker 14: take in order for them to get to where they
- 46:22Speaker 14: need to go.
- 46:23Speaker 13: Well, I'll say, firstly, I think you're right to bring
- 46:25Speaker 13: up both of those squads, because I mean, it's one
- 46:28Speaker 13: thing to say we have this prospect and that prospect,
- 46:31Speaker 13: and we've signed this free agent, and we've made this trade,
- 46:34Speaker 13: but it's another thing to go out there and demonstrate
- 46:36Speaker 13: your ability to win. I think, honestly, to answer your question,
- 46:39Speaker 13: it's to play meaningful hockey in the springtime. I think
- 46:42Speaker 13: we saw with both teams last year. The Ottawa Senators.
- 46:45Speaker 13: I mean, I know a lot of people with that organization.
- 46:47Speaker 13: They'll tell you that series was closer than six games.
- 46:50Speaker 13: I would battle back at a bit on that, like
- 46:53Speaker 13: you can make that case with every series in professional
- 46:55Speaker 13: sports they lose in six games. They were down three
- 46:58Speaker 13: nothing to start that series. But I think it's playing
- 47:00Speaker 13: meaningful hockey at the most important time of the year.
- 47:02Speaker 13: Even Montreal, Like on paper, people are just like salivating
- 47:08Speaker 13: over that roster. But as I mentioned earlier on, it's
- 47:11Speaker 13: different when you go from the hunter to the hunted,
- 47:13Speaker 13: and that I mean, you're not going to sneak up
- 47:15Speaker 13: on people anymore. I think you look at that Montreal team,
- 47:18Speaker 13: it's been a pretty decent start to the campaign for
- 47:20Speaker 13: them as well. They got some young talent they know.
- 47:22Speaker 13: A Doobtson pick up was crucial. Nick Suzuki is a
- 47:25Speaker 13: guy that people sleep on. I think one of the
- 47:27Speaker 13: more underrated players in this league. But that's probably the
- 47:30Speaker 13: way I would answer it. Get to the playoffs first
- 47:32Speaker 13: and foremost. When you get there, play important games and
- 47:36Speaker 13: start to accrue experience. Because we've seen so many prime
- 47:39Speaker 13: examples guys getting to those key moments and times. It's
- 47:43Speaker 13: like some guys it takes some time to figure it out.
- 47:46Speaker 13: So I would say that's probably the way I would
- 47:48Speaker 13: answer that.
- 47:49Speaker 15: So, Nick, we've talked a little bit amongst the three
- 47:51Speaker 15: of us about this road trip coming up, six games
- 47:53Speaker 15: against some very difficult teams, and you know what would
- 47:56Speaker 15: be considered a success coming out of that road trip.
- 47:59Speaker 15: You got that three sixty five rip behind you on
- 48:01Speaker 15: the wall there, put your betting hat on, and and
- 48:04Speaker 15: and give us a sense for looking at that schedule,
- 48:07Speaker 15: you know, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto and then back to back
- 48:09Speaker 15: with Philadelphia, Washington, finishing with Winnipeg. What games do you
- 48:13Speaker 15: think in that stretch do you think the krack and
- 48:17Speaker 15: have a good chance of winning? What games in that
- 48:19Speaker 15: stretch do you think that we might get surprised the
- 48:22Speaker 15: team across across from us. Give us a little sense
- 48:25Speaker 15: for you know, how you might lay that lay out
- 48:26Speaker 15: that parlay.
- 48:28Speaker 13: Look, it's it's funny to say this but this, this
- 48:30Speaker 13: could be the season for Seattle. Like I internally like this,
- 48:36Speaker 13: this is juice that I got to give you boys,
- 48:38Speaker 13: because you play six games.
- 48:39Speaker 1: From your lips to Seattle's ears.
- 48:42Speaker 13: Exactly like you have to you have to try to
- 48:45Speaker 13: find a way to split this. I think if you
- 48:48Speaker 13: were to ask Lane Lamber raid now, he's obviously gonna
- 48:51Speaker 13: be like, yeah, we want to win every game. But
- 48:52Speaker 13: if they can split this, I think they're going to
- 48:54Speaker 13: be in good standing moving forward here in the month
- 48:56Speaker 13: of October and in November, like, because you can fall
- 48:58Speaker 13: out of this thing really really quickly. I think Washington
- 49:02Speaker 13: is a beatable team this year. I think they're gonna
- 49:04Speaker 13: take a step back. I think they're prone to some
- 49:06Speaker 13: negative regression. I just a lot of stuff went right
- 49:09Speaker 13: for that team, even Philadelphia. I'm not crazy about that team.
- 49:12Speaker 13: They got some young players, they got Zegres in the mix.
- 49:15Speaker 13: They you know, matt Vey mitchkov year two in the league,
- 49:17Speaker 13: what is he going to do. I still have concerns,
- 49:19Speaker 13: major concerns about that team's crease, even though they have
- 49:23Speaker 13: Arison and and Dan Fadar now who's with Calgary the
- 49:26Speaker 13: last couple of years. So I think Philadelphia is a
- 49:28Speaker 13: winnable game. I think Washington's a winnable game. And then
- 49:32Speaker 13: it comes down to Ottawa, Toronto, Montreal and Winnipeg the Jets.
- 49:36Speaker 13: I mean, you're gonna be on fumes to finish off
- 49:39Speaker 13: that road trip, so i'd be I think it's difficult,
- 49:42Speaker 13: especially if Hellibuck goes in that game. So I think
- 49:44Speaker 13: they got to find a way to maybe get half
- 49:47Speaker 13: the points. We'll say in the first three games, grind
- 49:49Speaker 13: out at least a game that goes to ot I
- 49:52Speaker 13: think audi like they're all gettable. I think that's the
- 49:55Speaker 13: great thing about this league. And not to be cliche
- 49:57Speaker 13: with my answer, guys, it's like if you put forth
- 49:59Speaker 13: your best st effort on a nightly basis, you'll find
- 50:02Speaker 13: a way to scratch out points in this league. Like
- 50:04Speaker 13: parody is real in my opinion, I.
- 50:06Speaker 14: Got one more for you, Nick about Lane Lambert. You
- 50:08Speaker 14: know we've gotten to know him well here in Seattle.
- 50:11Speaker 14: You you covered him again, like you said, only for
- 50:14Speaker 14: a year, but with him being out along Island, you
- 50:17Speaker 14: know you've seen him more than than the crack and
- 50:19Speaker 14: have what is something that maybe we don't know about
- 50:24Speaker 14: Lane Lambert? What are we missing about Lane Lambert. We
- 50:27Speaker 14: know the intensity is there, the accountability. He is a defensive,
- 50:31Speaker 14: structured coach first, But what is something maybe that you
- 50:34Speaker 14: saw or that you found out while working with him,
- 50:38Speaker 14: that some Kraken fans might not know or.
- 50:41Speaker 10: Might be happy to know.
- 50:43Speaker 13: I love his passion and his energy. I thought you
- 50:46Speaker 13: got an unfair crack with the New York Islanders. Then
- 50:48Speaker 13: takes on one of the most you know, sought after jobs.
- 50:52Speaker 13: I think if you're an assistant being a right hand
- 50:54Speaker 13: man to a head coach in Toronto does that for
- 50:56Speaker 13: a year And I liked that the crack and gave
- 50:58Speaker 13: this guy another shot to be a head coach. But
- 51:00Speaker 13: that was like resoundingly when I watched the games, is
- 51:03Speaker 13: like the passion and the joy that he has in
- 51:06Speaker 13: his job. And I think they're in really good hands
- 51:08Speaker 13: with Seattle. I mean they're they're getting he's getting a
- 51:10Speaker 13: fresh canvas to work with this and I think, honestly,
- 51:13Speaker 13: the type of players he has is actually pretty good
- 51:16Speaker 13: for him. Like I think with the Outis he didn't
- 51:18Speaker 13: really have like a bona fide star player like he
- 51:20Speaker 13: had Matthew Barzao, who is a great player, but he's
- 51:23Speaker 13: not like a superstar. So I like the fact that
- 51:26Speaker 13: he's got that blue lion too. There's some guys who
- 51:28Speaker 13: have been there before, namely a Brandon on tour, but
- 51:32Speaker 13: like he's got some size there. I think it's more
- 51:34Speaker 13: prone to being that type of roster that brings success
- 51:37Speaker 13: for Leanne Lambert. But without question when you answered, you
- 51:39Speaker 13: asked me that question of like his passion, Like just
- 51:42Speaker 13: look at how animated he is on the bench, and
- 51:44Speaker 13: I just love that from a coach, and he's probably
- 51:46Speaker 13: a guy that guys love to play for as well.
- 51:49Speaker 1: Nick, if I can throw this your way, because we're
- 51:52Speaker 1: seeing a ton of teams out of the Eastern to
- 51:53Speaker 1: begin this trip, aside from the Florida Panthers, who's your
- 51:58Speaker 1: best bet for a pick to rise out of the
- 52:00Speaker 1: East this next spring.
- 52:03Speaker 13: I uh, I don't want to be biased, but like
- 52:06Speaker 13: the team I cover in the Maple Leafs, I think
- 52:08Speaker 13: they could take that next step, because yeah, I think
- 52:17Speaker 13: it's them, Like I think what's been in the way
- 52:18Speaker 13: of the Maple Leafs the last several years has been
- 52:20Speaker 13: the Florida Panthers, and I really wonder about that team.
- 52:23Speaker 13: But I'll give you a wildcard team that I really liked.
- 52:25Speaker 13: It's had a really good start to this year. Mike
- 52:27Speaker 13: Sullivan is one of the best coaches in hockey now
- 52:29Speaker 13: with the New York Rangers. They have one of the
- 52:31Speaker 13: best goals in the league. Ego shastererkan the New York Rangers.
- 52:34Speaker 13: I would not sleep on that team. I think it's
- 52:36Speaker 13: recency biased. People look at last year they missed the playoffs,
- 52:39Speaker 13: but they got a row. They're they're trying to win
- 52:41Speaker 13: a cup there, don't get don't get it twisted. I mean,
- 52:44Speaker 13: they're not trying to make the playoffs. I wouldn't sleep
- 52:46Speaker 13: on the Rangers, but my pick would be the Toronto
- 52:49Speaker 13: Maple Leafs.
- 52:50Speaker 14: Is this the year that Carolina does something past a
- 52:55Speaker 14: second round, past the conference finals?
- 52:57Speaker 13: No, I I get I got asked this question a lot,
- 53:01Speaker 13: and I love watching the Canes. You're not going anywhere
- 53:04Speaker 13: with that goaltending. I'm sorry. I saw Freddy Anderson first hand.
- 53:07Speaker 13: He's now thirty six. He can't stay healthy, he can't
- 53:10Speaker 13: make big saves. I mean, not to pack on him.
- 53:13Speaker 13: Then they have Kochekhov as their number two, Like I think,
- 53:15Speaker 13: if the Canes are serious and they've been linked to
- 53:17Speaker 13: every star player. They got Miko Ranton in last year.
- 53:20Speaker 13: It didn't work out. I think the next step they
- 53:22Speaker 13: need to make or take, And sadly, every team's looking
- 53:25Speaker 13: for a bona fide number one guy. I think until
- 53:28Speaker 13: that team can find a guy who can make saves
- 53:30Speaker 13: at important times, they're not going to go anywhere. And
- 53:32Speaker 13: they're much similar to the Leafs. Like Carolina's great and
- 53:36Speaker 13: then they get to a conference final and for the
- 53:38Speaker 13: most part every postseason their power play struggles, they can't
- 53:41Speaker 13: get a save. So no, I just don't see it
- 53:43Speaker 13: for that team. I think they're a really good regular
- 53:45Speaker 13: season team. They're a team that can win a couple
- 53:46Speaker 13: of rounds, but when it gets down to the nitty gritty,
- 53:49Speaker 13: they can't get the job done.
- 53:50Speaker 1: Referencing back here to the Crack and in New York
- 53:52Speaker 1: Rangers first time. They'll meet up November one here in
- 53:55Speaker 1: Seattle and then the Crack and make their only visit
- 53:58Speaker 1: to Madison Square Garden coming up in January. Hey, Nick,
- 54:01Speaker 1: appreciate this, certainly you do a fantastic word. Tell us
- 54:04Speaker 1: where everyone can find your work once again.
- 54:06Speaker 13: Yeah, at least morning take out the Leafs Nation for
- 54:08Speaker 13: one on YouTube. I also host the NHL Fantasy Na's
- 54:11Speaker 13: podcast with the NHL, so you can check that out
- 54:13Speaker 13: wherever you get your podcasts as well.
- 54:15Speaker 10: Nicky, thanks for your time, man.
- 54:16Speaker 13: This has been all my pleasure, my pleasure. Guys, thank
- 54:18Speaker 13: you so much for having me anytime you need me.
- 54:20Speaker 1: All Right, Nick Alberga joining us here at least morning take.
- 54:23Speaker 1: He is terrific at what he does. We'll make sure
- 54:25Speaker 1: we get back and did to get him back here
- 54:27Speaker 1: very very soon on this show Everett YouTube go way
- 54:30Speaker 1: back as well. He does a fantastic job and to
- 54:32Speaker 1: really appreciate what he can offer here as far as
- 54:35Speaker 1: we look from the Eastern Conference side of things. All right,
- 54:37Speaker 1: time for our three stars of the week before we
- 54:39Speaker 1: wrap all this up here. Two games, small sample size,
- 54:43Speaker 1: but I thought three key players going through this, we
- 54:47Speaker 1: all each have our own takes on this. Everett. I'll
- 54:51Speaker 1: begin with you your three stars of the week. Go ahead, Uh.
- 54:55Speaker 14: Give me give me Joey decord number one. I mean,
- 54:59Speaker 14: and I thought he kept the kracking in it on
- 55:03Speaker 14: on Thursday in that first period and allowed Seattle that
- 55:07Speaker 14: time to settle down and then you know, cool, call
- 55:10Speaker 14: him collected. Loved the Sellies I mean he was announced
- 55:13Speaker 14: as the stars of the game, just eating it up.
- 55:17Speaker 14: So I'm going Joey to Cordon By my first star.
- 55:20Speaker 14: My second star, I got Matty Beaneers. I thought that
- 55:22Speaker 14: Maddy Beaneers had a really two strong games, but two
- 55:27Speaker 14: hundred foot complete games. I mean he's scoring goals, obviously,
- 55:31Speaker 14: but defensively he's making good plays.
- 55:33Speaker 10: Al You and I were talking.
- 55:35Speaker 14: About his face off prowess and how he's maybe changed
- 55:38Speaker 14: a few things and he's winning draws.
- 55:40Speaker 10: So he's got my second Star of the week. And
- 55:44Speaker 10: I think my third star. This was tough.
- 55:46Speaker 14: I mean I probably had two or three guys that
- 55:50Speaker 14: I could have I could have put up there, but
- 55:52Speaker 14: I'm gonna go Jared mccannon. I think the goal obviously
- 55:55Speaker 14: the game winner in overtime, but once again in a
- 55:59Speaker 14: first period it on Thursday that was not their best.
- 56:03Speaker 14: I thought that some of the vets when they needed
- 56:06Speaker 14: to stand up and when they needed to get a
- 56:10Speaker 14: good rusher or to keep guys in it, I thought
- 56:12Speaker 14: he was right there in that mix as well.
- 56:15Speaker 10: So I'm going Joey D, Maddie b and Jared mccamnon.
- 56:19Speaker 15: So I'm going to do it properly from three to one.
- 56:24Speaker 7: That's okay, the broadcast absolutely, So third star for me
- 56:32Speaker 7: again some of the same names.
- 56:33Speaker 15: Matty Beneer is a goal to assist plus one over
- 56:35Speaker 15: the two games. Again, I love everything about the way
- 56:38Speaker 15: his game has developed from last season to this season.
- 56:42Speaker 15: I'm looking forward to see him seeing more takeaways from here,
- 56:45Speaker 15: more stick battles, more work along the boards, more moves
- 56:49Speaker 15: like he made in that game against Vegas and that goal.
- 56:52Speaker 15: So he's my third star. My second star is going
- 56:54Speaker 15: to Vince Dunn. One goal to assist plus two U.
- 56:58Speaker 15: He's averaging twenty two minutes a game over those first
- 57:00Speaker 15: two just a workhorse out there and often involved in
- 57:04Speaker 15: the offense as well. So I like Vince done in
- 57:07Speaker 15: that second star role. And then I got to go
- 57:09Speaker 15: with Joey for for the for the first star sitting
- 57:11Speaker 15: in I think second in the league with a save
- 57:13Speaker 15: percentage of And I don't know how this works because
- 57:15Speaker 15: he's been scored on twice in two games, two goals.
- 57:18Speaker 15: It says point nine point to nine to six for
- 57:21Speaker 15: a goals against average, So shaved a little bit off.
- 57:25Speaker 14: Yeah, okay, so it's it's per sixty. So the crack
- 57:28Speaker 14: in a per sixty one hundred and twenty four minutes
- 57:31Speaker 14: and fifty seven seconds or.
- 57:32Speaker 10: Something like that.
- 57:33Speaker 6: There you go, that's that's that's why.
- 57:35Speaker 15: So more than sixty minutes so uh point nine to
- 57:37Speaker 15: six goals goals against average save percentage second in the
- 57:40Speaker 15: league at nine six sixes. He's he's had a fantastic start.
- 57:43Speaker 15: He's gonna have to continue that forward on this road trip.
- 57:46Speaker 15: That's why he's my number one star. But honorable mentions
- 57:49Speaker 15: Jordan Everley, Mason Marchman getting his first goal as a
- 57:53Speaker 15: cracking and Jayden Schwartz and also Brandon Montour with a
- 57:57Speaker 15: big game as well.
- 57:58Speaker 1: Guys, I'll go with my third start to more of
- 58:00Speaker 1: a rugged approach right here, and that's Ryan lindgrend. I
- 58:03Speaker 1: loved his play. I loved his physicality. I loved how
- 58:06Speaker 1: he was able to immediately mesh and it was pretty
- 58:09Speaker 1: apparent with Brandon on tour and he delivered a virtuo.
- 58:12Speaker 1: So Ryan Lindgren game, I thought in the season opener
- 58:16Speaker 1: six block shots as well. He was physical all over
- 58:20Speaker 1: the place. And then go to the Vegas game, the
- 58:22Speaker 1: numbers on him nineteen minutes and two seconds of ice
- 58:26Speaker 1: time two block shots as well. He had a hit
- 58:29Speaker 1: the krack and a half thirty they out hit Vegas.
- 58:31Speaker 1: I thought he played a very very important role now,
- 58:33Speaker 1: and not just that, but also for the penalty kill
- 58:36Speaker 1: which was great against Vegas for the most part, and
- 58:39Speaker 1: then kept Anaheim off the board in game number one.
- 58:42Speaker 1: Plus also had that breakaway too when he was fed
- 58:44Speaker 1: by Jamie Alexiaki was fresh out of the box. I
- 58:47Speaker 1: thought lenn Gren looked great his first two games. Hey,
- 58:50Speaker 1: maybe you know another two way start in the making, Alexiak.
- 58:53Speaker 14: Sometimes when he really wants it, he's got a bit
- 58:56Speaker 14: of an offensive touch.
- 58:57Speaker 10: And I love len Gren's little right to left yell back.
- 59:01Speaker 6: It was it was like the red button, blue button,
- 59:08Speaker 6: red button, blue button.
- 59:09Speaker 1: We got to ask about that in the room this
- 59:11Speaker 1: next time about that. What was the talk like back
- 59:13Speaker 1: on the bench. My second star pretty obvious here. Matty
- 59:16Speaker 1: Beaneers phenomenal. You can't ask for much more from him.
- 59:20Speaker 1: Three points here for the first two games. But I
- 59:23Speaker 1: thought the Vegas game was on brand. Matty Beniers and
- 59:26Speaker 1: what you had to expect out of him, not just production,
- 59:29Speaker 1: but a two hundred foot game. He was reliable, He
- 59:32Speaker 1: was dependable. I love the way that he showed a
- 59:36Speaker 1: fearless approach when it came to fifty to fifty puck battles.
- 59:39Speaker 1: On top of that, and we've talked about this before.
- 59:43Speaker 1: Where this team goes, Maddy Beaniers will also go as well.
- 59:46Speaker 1: So that was a big step in the right direction
- 59:49Speaker 1: and a very optimistic outlook for the Kraken and for
- 59:52Speaker 1: Matty bean Eers has got to drive play from his line,
- 59:56Speaker 1: and the first star pretty obvious. Joey Decord take a bow.
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: He saved opening night from the first period and then
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: got this team comfortable. That's what a starting goaltender does.
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: He bailed him out early. This team then gained confidence
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: and they really took off after that. And I thought, again,
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: terrific as far as what he did against Vegas didn't
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: look uncomfortable at all and a big reason why again
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: to the cranking round to a two to zero start,
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: and also metrics wise, one of the top goaltenders in
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: this league as far as the first couple of games,
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: small sample size, but it shows how Greaty has been
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: certainly playing here for the first two games. That was
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: a big question mark. They had the structure in place,
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: they had details in place, they had a rugged approach
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: and they still wanted to play fast. But this wasn't
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: going to go anywhere unless their starting goaltender played up
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: to standards, and he was phenomenal. My three stars Lynn
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: Grin three, Beniers two, and Decord number one. So all
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: right into the six game trip we go. Walkoff are
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: becoming a thing. The Mariners are following you guys out
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: there not too far away toward the end of this week.
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: Fits you holding up here with the kiddies out of
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: the postseason, but yet them still hanging in there. Right now.
- 1:01:12Speaker 14: You know what I've said it before, I'll say it again.
- 1:01:15Speaker 14: You know I'm not upset, too upset about it. I
- 1:01:17Speaker 14: get to go from cheering on the baseball and the
- 1:01:20Speaker 14: Mews to the football Mews. The Murder City kiddies are
- 1:01:24Speaker 14: still very much alive in the National Football League. But hey,
- 1:01:29Speaker 14: Seattle deserves this as a market, as a city sports fans.
- 1:01:34Speaker 14: I'm I I love listening to Softy and he's like,
- 1:01:37Speaker 14: you know.
- 1:01:37Speaker 5: The marriage when when the World Series the whole town's
- 1:01:40Speaker 5: gonna burn down might work.
- 1:01:43Speaker 14: So I uh, I'm looking for I'm looking for to
- 1:01:49Speaker 14: that got that got what I needed to get.
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: Out out, no accomplished.
- 1:01:54Speaker 14: Yeah, I'm looking forward to a good uh good week.
- 1:01:57Speaker 14: I'm kind of bummed though. We're on the road for
- 1:01:58Speaker 14: the entire ALCS and we have an off day Friday,
- 1:02:03Speaker 14: which will be Game five. So I'm gonna throw on
- 1:02:06Speaker 14: my Mariners hoodie go to go to the Loose Moose
- 1:02:09Speaker 14: and watch a Mariners victory.
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: Josh Naylor, we got to see more more of the
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: crack and third jersey and every celebration.
- 1:02:16Speaker 6: That was, oh yeah, and if he was.
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: And he was also very outamant and how much he
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: saw the players Joey Dcord, Matty Beneirs, Ty car Jay,
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: Ryan Lindgren and more up in that suite and fired
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: the guys up and this team as well to crack
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: and know when the Mariners do well, when the Seahawks
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: do well, the Huskies do well. Cougar fans around here too, storm, rain,
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: you name it. They intersect with a lot of kracking
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: fans around here. So when one team is making a
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: deep postseason run, the vibes increase, they intensify here in
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: this sports town, and really it kind of it elevates
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: the mood and inspires other players on other teams to
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: follow suit as well. So congratulations here to the Mariners
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: as of this recording, up one game to nothing over
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: the Blue Jays. They come home for games three, four,
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: and possibly five this week at Teamabile Park, while the
