- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Cantonese with Fexingo, Episode 57! I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna! Hey, Lucas, last episode we talked about transport, right? Taxi, bus, MTR. Lucas: Yeah, we did. And today we're going to build on that a little. Imagine you're in a taxi and you need to tell the driver where to turn. Luna: Oh, that's useful! Left and right, I bet. Lucas: Exactly. So today's phrases are all about left and right. Let's start with the basic words. Left in Cantonese is 左. Luna: 左. Lucas: Good. Now right is 右. Luna: 右. Lucas: Perfect. So left is 左, right is 右. Let's practice those a couple of times. Luna: Sure. 左, 右. 左, 右. Lucas: Yeah, you've got it. Now, if you want to say 'turn left', you say 轉左. So turn is 轉, and left is 左. Luna: 轉左. Lucas: Right. And 'turn right' is 轉右. Luna: 轉右. Lucas: Great. So in a taxi, you might say 轉左 or 轉右. Let's try a little dialogue. Imagine you're in a taxi. Luna: Okay, I'll be the passenger. So I'd say... 轉左. Lucas: And the driver would turn left. Now, another way to say 'to the left' is 向左. And 'to the right' is 向右. These are a bit more formal, but you might hear them. Luna: 向左, 向右. Lucas: Exactly. So you can use either 轉左/轉右 or 向左/向右. Let's practice all four. Luna: Okay. 轉左, 轉右, 向左, 向右. Lucas: Good. Now let's use them in a sentence. Say you want to tell someone the supermarket is on the left. You can say 超級市場喺左邊. That means 'the supermarket is on the left side'. But for today, we'll stick with the directions. Luna: Got it. So if I'm giving directions, I can say '轉左' or '轉右'. Lucas: Yes. And if you're walking, you can say '向左行' meaning 'go left', or '向右行' meaning 'go right'. But we'll keep it simple for now. Luna: Okay. Let me try a quick practice. I'm at a street corner and I need to go right. So I say... 轉右. Lucas: Perfect. Now let's hear you say 'turn left'. Luna: 轉左. Lucas: Excellent. So we have 左, 右, 轉左, 轉右. Let's do a little roleplay. I'll be the taxi driver, you're the passenger. You need to go to the train station. Luna: Okay. Um, 轉右 first, then 轉左. Lucas: Got it. So you'd say: 轉右, 然後轉左. But for now, just the basics. Let's repeat all the phrases one more time. Luna: Sounds good. 左, 右, 轉左, 轉右. Lucas: Great. And remember, if you're going straight, you can say 直行, but that's for another day. Luna: Okay. So today's takeaway: left is 左, right is 右, turn left is 轉左, turn right is 轉右. Lucas: Exactly. And you can also say 向左 and 向右 for 'to the left' and 'to the right'. Practice these, and next time you're in a taxi, you'll be ready. Luna: Awesome. Thanks, Lucas! Lucas: You're welcome. That's it for Episode 57 of Learn Cantonese with Fexingo. Keep practicing, and we'll see you next time. Luna: Bye bye!
