- 0:00Back with Gino. It is the start of a doubleheader night here on the
- 0:03network. Perhaps you fur there's a big men's basketball game in Lawrence, Kansas
- 0:07tonight between fourth ranked Dukon and fifth rank Kansas. Mike and Wayn are out
- 0:11and Lawrence still have the pregame at eight thirty here around the network. We've
- 0:16never been to Kansas for a women's game. I know the one time you
- 0:18played them was in Kansas City. Have you ever been to Allen Field House
- 0:22at all for any reason? No, okay, no, not at all,
- 0:27And you know, everyone, everyone that's ever been there says it's a
- 0:32unique, amazing environment. Obviously one of the most storied places in America.
- 0:42So I'm sure it'll be it'll be an incredible atmosphere. Yeah, we don't
- 0:48get to see enough of these in men's college basketball. Yes, it's a
- 0:50Big East, Big twelve thing, but it's not like the women's game where
- 0:54your schedule home at homes with a lot of good teams. You just don't
- 0:57see that a nonconference play on the Yeah, as far as your team is
- 1:02concerned. You know, Aliyah was six of nineteen in the Caymans, and
- 1:07she struggled against UCLA. But the first three seasons she's been here, she's
- 1:11had Lived. Year two it was Live and Dorka. Year three it was
- 1:15Dorka. Does she missed that complimentary piece that you're trying to maybe get with
- 1:21Ice affecting her play at all or is it just something that she has to
- 1:23figure out, particularly against the big teams that you're going to play and have
- 1:27played. I think there's there's part of that. But she also played great
- 1:33when Dorka was out last year. You know there were stretches, you know,
- 1:41Dorka was out about them, right, so that during that month and
- 1:46I remember the the Marlin games specifically where she was just incredibly good. So
- 1:55you know, every kid goes through these situations. You know, they go
- 1:57through slumps, they go through shooting slumps, or they they struggle with their
- 2:00game. It it happens to all all of the best players. And now
- 2:08you know that's where you need some some people to help carry the lot time
- 2:15to step up, you know, And like you said, when when when
- 2:21the season started, we knew this was going to be an issue, and
- 2:23we need Ice to play like a really good player, and we need Aubrey
- 2:30to play the way she did every single minute of every night. But at
- 2:35the same time, it's an awful lot of wide open shots that we missed
- 2:40that can make life easier on everybody. You know. And you take all
- 2:45the wide open shots that didn't go in and you you know, you say,
- 2:50have half of those going that we normally would make. But again you
- 2:54don't have Carol. And as in the lineup. Now you're asking kids who
- 2:58have never really made a lot of shots in these situations to have to all
- 3:01of a sudden step up and make them. And we're gonna have to get
- 3:07that. That's all there is to it. Yeah, speaking of Ice,
- 3:10it seems like, you know she missed the year. Is she feeling the
- 3:14pressure of needing to produce just coming off an injury like she had? Well,
- 3:22I mean our managers feel pressure, you know, everybody associated with the
- 3:25program. Yeah, you know, then the many you decide to work here,
- 3:30there's there's a certain kind of pressure. And if you're a player,
- 3:35yes, you have to you have to embrace that. You have to use
- 3:39it as a something that motivates you. It helps you play better, and
- 3:45that takes time. I guess, you know, not everybody, not everybody
- 3:49comes in and their freshman year, and is you know jenaz Adi or Maya
- 3:53Moore. You know, people progress at their own rate. But yeah,
- 4:03the pressure that you put on yourself to be good, Yeah, that's good
- 4:06for you. It forces you to be good, and that's what we need.
- 4:13We need that. You mentioned Paige having to shoulder the load early with
- 4:18Maggie and Debbie on Friday postgame. What have you thought about pages play six
- 4:23games into the season pretty much what you hoped better. I think it's been
- 4:28okay. I think it's been I mean what she had twenty in the second
- 4:33half of this game, you know, and she had thirty against somebody I
- 4:39don't know. To me, they've been kind of not the way she wants
- 4:50to get her points. That's not how she wants to play, you know.
- 4:56I think she wants to have more assists and she's not getting enough because
- 5:00we're missing a lot of the shots that she gets you open on. So
- 5:04I think Page's best games or when she gets twenty and ten and right now,
- 5:13you know, we're asking her to take too many shots for her to
- 5:15play the way Page is most effective. But you know, between her and
- 5:23Nica and KK, I think the three of them can you know, can
- 5:29make enough shots and still find people. But no, Pages, Page is
- 5:35not anywhere near where I expect her to be as as the season goes on.
- 5:42What about this dynamic without Caroline? And as you mentioned KK and Nika
- 5:46is Page playing a little more too? The two spot as a like,
- 5:50when KK or Nika are out there, are they basically interchangeable or you don't
- 5:56really have a number for her as far as her role goes, what's spot
- 6:00on the floor. Well, her freshman year, you know, uh,
- 6:06Nica played an awful lot the second half of the season and had the ball
- 6:11in her hands a lot her sophomore year and I run to the national championship
- 6:15game, Nica played a lot. So I think it works out pretty well.
- 6:25The the Nika, KK, Page three, those three out there together
- 6:35is really really good defensively at times. I don't know yet if KK can
- 6:43navigate that she's too young to find her spots in that and Nico wants the
- 6:47ball. KK wants the ball. And you know they're going to learn how
- 6:50to coexist because we'll have that line up somes. It just takes time.
- 6:58But you know, the biggest miss, you know, is the maturity of
- 7:05lou and Dorka, right, you know, so if you say, if
- 7:10you say, hey, listen, we we lost lou She she was a
- 7:15twenty three year old, you know, we're replacing her with with Ashley Shade
- 7:19who's seventeen, you know, eighteen, whatever the case may be. And
- 7:25we missed Dorka's size and rebounding and everything else that she did. So we
- 7:31could say, well, we put page in for Louke, all right,
- 7:34but we didn't replace We thought Jenna was going to replace Dorka m And so
- 7:41that's the issue right now. We don't have those two. So we became
- 7:47a much much, much much younger team and it's going to take some time,
- 7:53it is. Yep, yeah, for sure more with Gino as the
- 7:57Wells Fargo You kind of women's basketball Coaches Show continues in a minute here on Larfield
