- 0:00Who do you compare yourself to most often?
- 0:03And have you considered that this person,
- 0:06seemingly so perfect from the outside, also feels deficient, feels unworthy,
- 0:12in some way, in some area of their life?
- 0:24social comparison is a deep pain and a wound it can feel deeply isolating and deeply shameful
- 0:31especially when you want to be happy and joyful and feel the joy in your bones at other people
- 0:38thriving succeeding winning especially when you want to believe there's room for all of us and
- 0:43you want to have an abundance mindset and yet you are conditioned on scarcity you are conditioned
- 0:51to believe it's either her or me it's either them or me it's either him or me you are conditioned
- 0:57to believe that someone succeeding at something or receiving accolades attention applause
- 1:05is a testament to what you're not getting their presence of publishing their work consistently
- 1:12or being engaged or whatever you compare yourself to,
- 1:16that that is an absence within you.
- 1:21Their win is your loss.
- 1:22This is the zero-sum game that capitalism and supremacy
- 1:26and all this culture of hierarchy,
- 1:29who's at the top of this hierarchy,
- 1:30who's the most desired in this hierarchy,
- 1:33desirability, desirability in many respects.
- 1:37So this is a deep pain and wound that we carry.
- 1:40and what I like to say is comparison is not the thief of joy because saying that telling people
- 1:46just stay in your lane stay focused you're on your own path while I understand that this can
- 1:51be coming from such a loving place people are trying to support you people are trying to stop
- 1:56you from allowing other people's events of their unfolding to remove you from staying present to
- 2:03your own people are trying to support you and staying focused on your own path I think the
- 2:08tragedy here is the reality is we're not on our own path.
- 2:11We do not walk the path of human life
- 2:12on our own.
- 2:14And if we look back to ancient times, if you told a tribe, you know, five, six hundred,
- 2:19seven hundred years ago, you know what, you, you're on your own path.
- 2:22They'd be like, excuse me, what?
- 2:23My survival, my culture, my whole practice of living depends on these people around me.
- 2:30And many of us still feel that today.
- 2:31I feel that way with my family, a togetherness, a belonging.
- 2:35and I know that my path is very tied to my family's path and yet also we need a balance.
- 2:41I'm also an individual so it's both.
- 2:44I'm a part of a collective and I'm also an individual.
- 2:47So anyways, what I dislike about the advice to focus on your own path is it can make you feel
- 2:54ashamed when you just can't.
- 2:56When you see someone's video and it's popping off and you're like,
- 2:59why are they getting the attention that I am not?
- 3:03When you feel like someone who you've maybe
- 3:07compared yourself to for years, everything that they win or succeed at is just a commentary
- 3:13on how you are just not good enough.
- 3:15And that's what this voice tells you.
- 3:16Now,
- 3:17I want to affirm you are more than enough.
- 3:20You are incomparable.
- 3:22And actually, the essence of
- 3:24the soul of your soul that part of you is beyond comparison because it's interesting what we
- 3:32compare ourselves to others about we don't compare ourselves to others based on how loving that
- 3:38person is we don't compare ourselves to others based on how generous how kind how devoted
- 3:47we tend to and this is by and large of course there are definitely deviations but we tend
- 3:52to compare ourselves to other people through the lens,
- 3:57the very damaging and damaged lens of the social value system
- 4:02that we have been conditioned into since we were born.
- 4:06We compare ourselves to others based on success defined by the society we were given,
- 4:15receiving accolades, money, attention, institutions,
- 4:19proving that someone is worthy degrees qualifications now these things can be so
- 4:25magical to celebrate but all i'm trying to say is there is a deeper reality of feeling
- 4:36of the spirit that we don't often compare ourselves according to feeling chosen by a
- 4:43romantic partner a milestone of marriage that's something society teaches us is important
- 4:49you could have the most incredible friendship in your life
- 4:53and society is not really going to give you the permission
- 4:57to be let off the hook of not feeling good enough
- 5:00for not having a romantic partner.
- 5:02You could experience such deep fulfillment making your art
- 5:07but society is going to point to the people who are getting record deals
- 5:11or with these more obvious and industry-backed markers of success.
- 5:18so what is something about you that is just incomparable
- 5:22I'm going to give you an example I love deeply listening to people
- 5:30and I love to allow someone to feel truly heard in my presence now I often fail at that I often
- 5:37fall short of that intention that value that principle but it is something that I believe
- 5:41is incomparable about me it doesn't mean that I'm the best listener no I'm saying it's actually
- 5:47incomparable it's so essential like of the essence it's something deeper that you wouldn't even say
- 5:54oh they're a kind of good listener and they're an incredible it just doesn't it sort of does
- 5:58a disservice to the whole concept you could be someone who is so generous like you just give
- 6:04of your spirit of your time of your energy of your essence that is incomparable it would be
- 6:10so reductive to say oh but they are more generous than you wait what does that even mean we give
- 6:15from our own gifts of our own spirit what is incomparable about you maybe you are so present
- 6:24like when you experience beauty a sunset a mountain range a horizon just the face of the
- 6:32person looking at you you could feel like wow i'm so present and the cosmos thanks you for that
- 6:39because i have this theory that the trees the mountains the buildings even are feeling so
- 6:43neglected because we're not attending in the same way we're capturing but we're not always fully
- 6:50attending to reality as reality keeps giving to us trying to give us beauty give us a moment of
- 6:57pause give us a breath of fresh air are we attending to her less and less because of big tech
- 7:04and how we've been conditioned to desire a form of dopamine that goes against the slowness of nature
- 7:12So I want to invite you to reflect on what is incomparable about you and place it in the comments.
- 7:20Something so magical about you that goes beyond what society could ever have taught you or conditioned you to try and place against or above or below anyone.
- 7:35these are gifts of your spirit and it is so deeply important to nourish them to value them and to see
- 7:43them with the importance that they deserve that when you put these gifts of your spirit at the
- 7:49center you start to find something that feels more like home you start to feel like you are
- 8:00in a deeper relationship and intimacy with your gifts, with your magic, with the abundance of
- 8:05your soul.
