- 0:21All right, everybody, you're listening to Eagles postgame analysis here at the Philadephia
- 0:25Sports Table podcast show, the longest running weekly Philly sports podcast show in the
- 0:28world. Week one of the Eagles twenty three twenty four season now in the
- 0:34books. The Eagles beating the New England Patriots on the road up in Foxboro
- 0:38by a score of twenty five to twenty didn't seem like a win, did
- 0:42it, folks? For those of you listening, I don't know about you,
- 0:46but it did not necessarily seem like a win, and certainly wasn't a
- 0:49decisive win at all by the standards we had coming into this game and coming
- 0:54into this season. I am Jeff Warren. I'm here with my good buddy
- 0:58Eric Leonard er Man. We're gonna go through our themes of the game,
- 1:03some of our takeaways, and then get into our grades, as we do
- 1:06and have been doing every year that we've been doing this podcast. So I
- 1:08guess, first and foremost we had we had Tony Romo and Jim Nance to
- 1:12start us off, which honestly I didn't mind too much. I was like,
- 1:17I hope they don't stick us with a bunch of real schlups. We
- 1:21didn't have that. I know you'd like to talk about the announcers on our
- 1:25postgame shows, So I don't know about you, buddy, but I was
- 1:27happy about that. That's the most important thing for me talking about this Eagles
- 1:33matchup right off the bat men, I actually would have liked to have some
- 1:38like Iron Eagle shitty great d announcing team, Like yeah, like everything about
- 1:45this game that's just kind of neat. I mean, Jim Nance is a
- 1:49bore. Yes, Tony Romo's turned to an absolute bore of a color analyst.
- 1:53He does, he does the stuff already. He sounds like he's John
- 1:57Madden, you know, eighty years old. He's like fifty years old.
- 2:00Yeah. The weather was terrible. Their crowd is not the best. It's
- 2:06not a good stadium. Tom Brady of course, was very boring at halftime.
- 2:09Of course, he's never been very exciting. And it was just a
- 2:14bad game overall from start to finish. Both teams terrible. This is one
- 2:19thing I text all you guys, I've never really watched Mac Jones play football,
- 2:23and man, I got a strong Chad Pennington, but not as good
- 2:28Chad Pennington vibe. I like that I like that comp Yeah, he's kind
- 2:32got a rag arm. He's kind of got a like when he had I
- 2:36think almost said two or three times, like you got a zing that ball
- 2:38in there? He out loud was like you need to throw that ball harder
- 2:43to an NFL quarterback. That's that's kind of pathetic, right. I don't
- 2:46watch every football game, but that's kind of sad. It is. It
- 2:49absolutely is kind of sad. I believe on our text thread you said he's
- 2:53a noodle armed idiot. Yeah, I did. I want to to get
- 3:00it straight. I wanted to get everything proper as it should be here on
- 3:04our first Eagles post podcast show, that was a noodle arm idiot. There
- 3:08were some other explatives out there for him, but I had just really unimpressive.
- 3:14Both teams just really sloppy. The coordinators and you said they were at
- 3:17top of it before we started recording first year coordinators. I will give credit
- 3:22to I thought the defensive coordinator. I thought the defense came out really aggressive.
- 3:27The front was really good. I mean, can get into it later,
- 3:29but like New England, cod barely rushed the ball and that was very
- 3:32evident. All I had to do was shut mac Jones down and they couldn't
- 3:37really do that, even though he's a noodle arm idiot. Like I said,
- 3:39but my takeaway the game sloppy. But you gotta wa you got it.
- 3:45You gotta win on the road in a messy, rainy, crappy game
- 3:49against one of the best coaches ever sports. I'll take it. So yeah,
- 3:53but you gotta take the win. Yeah, absolutely, folks. We
- 3:54gotta take the win anyway we can take it. And it absolutely happened.
- 3:59Eagles want to know on the season thus far. But in terms of like,
- 4:02in terms of the themes of the game, Eric, I think the
- 4:05biggest one of the biggest themes was that we definitely have two new coordinators for
- 4:11this Eagles team. Brian Johnson the offensive coordinator, shown Decide the defensive coordinator.
- 4:15Two rookie coordinators. In terms of who they are for this Philadelphia Eagles
- 4:20team, they were absolutely schooled a number of times today and and and I
- 4:27just look at especially that fourth and two play at the end of the fourth
- 4:31quarter. It wasn't necessary to run Jalen Hurts on the play. And by
- 4:36and by the way, is well, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm
- 4:40thinking, I'm thinking of the passing play. I'm thinking of the passing play.
- 4:43I love how they're running the ball up until then, but then they
- 4:46decide on the fourth and two to pass it. But but when the Eagles
- 4:49dig get the ball back in the Patriots territory, it wasn't necessary for Jalen
- 4:56Hurts to run the play on that particular type of play where he mumbled the
- 5:00ball at the end of the fourth quarter. It wasn't necessary. That was
- 5:02an unnecessary play to call, And that goes to show Brian Johnson's just lack
- 5:08of in game experience. He's gonna get there, I think, but still
- 5:13could have cost this team the game right there. Well, and if I
- 5:16wouldn't remember, I think the play call was a quick, quick throw over
- 5:20the mill to the tight end. Yeah, and they hadn't thrown him all
- 5:25game. I think once they've throwned the god her his head like yeah,
- 5:30one target, no catches and in that spot, like, how are you
- 5:34not? How is it that a quick in on both your great receivers on
- 5:40either end, Smith and Brownie? How was that not the play call?
- 5:43How can how can a J brown not go one yard in? One yard
- 5:48in one yard step forward? One in. That's two yards catch. That's
- 5:53every time right, absolutely said he goes Dallas got the middle who hasn't didn't
- 5:57see a damn ball all game, and I guess to play. I guess
- 6:00the thought was, oh, we're gonna catch them off guard. Well,
- 6:02you're you're also playing against what you said. They got schooled well Bill Belichick,
- 6:08who's the offensive coordinator for the Patriots, Bill O'Brien. O'Brien, Yeah,
- 6:12it's been around, like I know, like maybe it's not the greatest
- 6:15coach of all time, but yeah, they got out coach today and thank
- 6:17god, still won the game. But even Nick Sirianni looked kind of silly
- 6:21today against Bill Belichick. But again, thank goodness for the I would say
- 6:28that defensive line was extremely aggressive. I will give I'll give our coordinator that,
- 6:32and thank god we have Darius Slayton the team because without that interception on
- 6:36that pick six, ye, we don't win the game. They're they got
- 6:41four days to get the coaching right now. They're not gonna be facing the
- 6:45best coach in NFL history. Far from it. We're playing a team that
- 6:47just lost to Tampa at home and their home opener. But that you know,
- 6:51you've got four days, but you're going home and again, awful game.
- 6:56And then that's the kind of game if you lose the the negativity is
- 7:00like off the charts. You win, it's it's not too bad right out
- 7:05of sloppy, but we gotta win on the road. It was this was
- 7:10a much This could have been a much worse loss if they had lost.
- 7:14If that makes sense, absolutely, no to piggyback off what you're saying right
- 7:16there, and it's absolutely My next point, in my next theme of this
- 7:19particular game is that there was a lot of rust on Jalen Hurts. There
- 7:25was a lot of rust on the offensive line throughout this game. And that's
- 7:29what you get when a lot of these guys just don't play throughout the preseason.
- 7:32Yes, you don't want your players being hurt throughout the preseason. And
- 7:36I'm not saying Jalen Hurts should have been out there for six quarters of the
- 7:40preseason playing and just getting acclimated to things. No, I'm not saying that
- 7:44at all. But what you said just now, Eric goes to the point
- 7:48where there is a lot of rust that is still on this team, and
- 7:51we saw it throughout the NFL today in general, on this Sunday here September
- 7:56ten, twenty twenty three, saw a lot of rust on a lot of
- 7:59different players right out of the gate. And here's another point that I think
- 8:03is interesting in another theme. And I don't know if Sirianni is gonna be
- 8:07talking about this. I don't know if Brian Johnson's gonna be talking about this
- 8:11at all. But I saw an interesting tweet from our friend of the pod
- 8:13who was on recently OJ Spivey, and he said, why go out and
- 8:18acquire a big running back like Rashad Penny only to sit him in the first
- 8:24game of the season. Rashad Penny a two hundred and twenty pound running back,
- 8:30and yes, Kenny Gainwell, while he was very instrumental in moving the
- 8:33ball and moving the chains throughout the day, a two hundred pound running back,
- 8:37they could have used Rashad Penny out there in a number of short yardage
- 8:41type of equations and even on those show that fourth and two towards the end
- 8:46of the game there they could have used Rashad Penny four shure and yes,
- 8:52Kenny Gainwell did have fifty four yards on fourteen carries. He only average three
- 8:56point nine yards per carry, and he was instrumental in the passing game,
- 9:00catching four balls for twenty yards. And I'm not saying that he wasn't a
- 9:03good player today by any stretch, But why have for shot Penny. Why
- 9:07go out and actually get him in free agency and bring him to the Philadelphia
- 9:11Eagles if you're gonna sit him. Meanwhile, DeAndre Swift, the other running
- 9:16back that you go out and you acquire through a trade with the Detroit Lions,
- 9:22had one carry for three yards today. I was a little baffled by
- 9:26how the rushing attack really went today. And again I think goes back to
- 9:30the fact that we got we got a rookie offensive coordinator in Brian Johnson.
- 9:33You know, we saw it from from the offensive side. The defensive side
- 9:37was Seawan Desai. There were a lot of up and downs in this game,
- 9:41honestly, a lot more downs. Ball kind of bounced the Eagle's way,
- 9:45which is why they got this twenty five twenty win. But again with
- 9:48the running back situation, I was a little baffled by it. Eric I
- 9:52honestly I went back and looked at the h The notes did are like opening
- 9:56late or preseason notes or I got pregame notes. Sorry. Was Rashod Penny
- 10:01like, was he active? Yeah? He was active in the preseason.
- 10:03I mean he was getting touches and carries, and even for this game,
- 10:07I when I didn't see I didn't hear his name once. I was like,
- 10:09I actually looked it up. Was he hurt or did he just not
- 10:13playing the preseason enough? I don't know. Yeah. Yeah, And they
- 10:16didn't barely use Swift. They had no plan at running back, that's for
- 10:22sure. Besides running, Jalen Hurts and Kenneth gained well with fourteen carries.
- 10:26I mean, geez a lot. Yeah, but I couldn't help it.
- 10:31Like that fumble he had was very reminiscent of the Super Bowl. Yeah,
- 10:35it was a bummer. It was a perfect shot, but you know,
- 10:39we gotta look at the positives really, Like, honestly, the defensive line
- 10:45was actually better, I would say than I could have imagined. Thank God.
- 10:48From yes, yeah, yeah, I mean, and okay, I'll
- 10:52take some credit here. I said the score was going to be twenty seven
- 10:54to twenty on the show this past week. You did, and the offense
- 10:58was going to be really sloppy and rusty. You did. I was two
- 11:01points off. I didn't think Mac Jones would put up like four almost four
- 11:05hundred yards on us, but that was like, no, you know,
- 11:09I'll get to that in a second, right right, Yeah, yeah,
- 11:13well, I you know, I think I even said during the show,
- 11:15we have an issue at corner and safety and that's okay because we're gonna have
- 11:18the best defensive line. Where where we might get in trouble as linebackers,
- 11:20I'm not sure. Yeah, but the offense like okay, so we'll just
- 11:28put it out there. You and I picked Eagles Bengals super Bowl. Yes,
- 11:31right now, in this moment, maybe not the greatest, but I
- 11:37did say I think I think the best teams are going to struggle for because
- 11:39they don't never play anyone in the preseason. So by week five, weeks
- 11:45six, US and the Bengals are just rolling through teams. Then I'll be
- 11:48like, okay, we'll feel a little better after this game. Right now,
- 11:50you know, I have te Higgins and both my fantasy teams zero points,
- 11:54City Buddy, thank you. It's a lot. That team looks sloppy.
- 11:58But I again, I think I think by week three four is where
- 12:03you're gonna see the offense going, and I'm hoping Penny's part of that swift
- 12:07part of that, and hopefully Dallas Goddard would be nice if he was part
- 12:09of that too, I would be great. And if that momentum keeps going
- 12:13with the defensive defensive lineman stuff, that's that's where we'll start to just roll
- 12:18through teams. Absolutely, all right, we got to talk about them from
- 12:20the defensive side. Now, I think we've pretty much gone through the offensive
- 12:22standpoint I really quick though, before we get to the defense, I want
- 12:26to give some props to DeVante Smith A J. Brown balling out there like
- 12:31they usually do. And what I mean by that is they each had ten
- 12:35targets in this game. They each came down with seven balls. Each had
- 12:39seven receptions. A J. Brown seventy nine yards on the day, DeVante
- 12:43Smith forty seven yards on the day. Quez Watkins he caught both of his
- 12:46passes. Folks for the Quays Watkins haters out there, he only had two
- 12:50balls thrown his way, but he caught both of them for seventeen yards and
- 12:54we had that amazing And see that's where Jay, this is where Jalen Hurts
- 12:58is so incredible and DeVante Smith as well. That touchdown that Jalen hurts through
- 13:03to DeVante Smith in the end zone, Holy freaking crap. He couldn't have
- 13:07placed it any better underneath the arms of the defender. There was only one
- 13:11place that he could have actually put that ball perfectly, and he did it
- 13:16to perfection. So of course it's there again. It's a rusty game right
- 13:20to start the season. I think we're going to start to see some good
- 13:24things over Holy over these next few weeks. As Eric was saying, but
- 13:26from the defensive side. Now, Eric, boy, you said, man,
- 13:31the linebackers wholely freaking shit, Nakobe Dean getting schooled in pass coverage for
- 13:39most of the game, and then I'm seeing this, He's going out just
- 13:43Zach Hunningham and ellis also just a complete liability when it came to them in
- 13:50pass coverage. We want to know why Mac Jones had the majority of those
- 13:54three hundred and sixteen total yards on the day was because of the lack of
- 14:00just ability to cover from the linebacker corps and the miscommunication with the linebacker corps
- 14:05and the secondary as well. Holy shit, man, Ducai has to get
- 14:11this figured out. He really does I know next week Kirk Cousins Week two.
- 14:16I know he's not the greatest quarterback in the world, but he will
- 14:18be able to pick apart the middle of the field like Mac Jones did today.
- 14:22If this isn't straightened out, yeah, well, and this is also
- 14:26I was going to say at the top of the show, like this is
- 14:30kind of a cliche for a team that made the Super Bowl the previous year.
- 14:33Every team is gunning for you now, you know, like Bill Belichick
- 14:37had this one circled. It's like, you guys, beat me the super
- 14:39Bowl. You just made the Super Bowl. Tom Brady's here in the house,
- 14:41I'm going to bring my a game, and he did. He coached
- 14:45a hell of a game given the talent he has on both sides of the
- 14:48ball. But yeah, the secondary and this just lack of linebackers. With
- 14:56Kirk Cousins and that offensive juggernaut, I know they didn't play well to hit,
- 15:00but they were kind of probably playing their first preseason game, just like
- 15:01Jalen Hurts was today, as was most of the other players, including the
- 15:05offensive line. They looked really rusty. But I'm hoping by this game,
- 15:09as He's like, there's this will be their second preseason game, but I
- 15:16can't stand up about the defensive line. Jordan Davis was just dominant. He
- 15:18was kind of they drafted last year and I'm I'm on Twitter just looking up
- 15:24Jail car Jaalen Carter didn't see the didn't see the field a ton, but
- 15:28every single time he was out there, he had a sack today. I
- 15:31don't know how many pressures. His first play in the first quarter, he
- 15:35just bowled through the guard, just ran him right over and almost sack Mac.
- 15:39He's going to be a menace. And once he understands, like once
- 15:41he fully understands the position and like where you're supposed to be in this defense
- 15:46with him and Davis out there at the same time, what what what are
- 15:48teams like Kirk Cousins can try and throw to his Addison and Jefferson only wants
- 15:54or Maddis whatever his name is. It won't matter if Davison Carter in his
- 15:58face at the end higher timing like they they started to look like, oh
- 16:03my god, this might be one of the most terroristic tackle duos in the
- 16:07league, like like soon absolutely absolutely, I'm glad you brought it up.
- 16:11I'm glad you brought up Jalen Carter. I mean, I think already after
- 16:15Week one could potentially be up up in the top five of being the rookie
- 16:19of the year. Yes, I know it's only week one, Folks calmed
- 16:22down, but as Eric was saying, you take a look at the box
- 16:26score, and it's like, okay, one tackle, one sack, one
- 16:30tackle for a loss, however, and one quarterback hit. However, he
- 16:33was containing where he needed to contain within his gaps. When you saw it
- 16:37out there, he was. He was an absolute beast out there doing his
- 16:42job what he needed to do. And it's one of the reasons why Romandre
- 16:47Stevenson on twelve carries only had twenty five yards two point one yards per carry.
- 16:52Now, wasn't all on Jalen Carter, but when he was out there
- 16:56making plays. It's one of the reasons why this rushing game from the Patriots,
- 17:00they only put up seventy six yards rushing in this game, three point
- 17:03five yards per rush. Eric, You're absolutely right there. I mean,
- 17:07if there is one unit we're gonna grade in a little bit, If there's
- 17:10one unit that actually does deserve an A this week, I think it's a
- 17:12defensive line man easily because Josh Wett two totally yep. The tackles took up
- 17:18a lot of the took a lot of the heat and loud sweat. That
- 17:22was not a pun. Okay, I swear to God's sweat heat. I
- 17:25was not trying for that. He looked fucking awesome today. And he's one
- 17:29of those guys that he's he's he's like Greg Ward and that you're like,
- 17:33is he's telling the roster But he's really good though it's not like Greg Ward,
- 17:36where who just who just has a roster spot to it for eternity,
- 17:40Josh Sweat is still in this team, looks as good as ever, like
- 17:42actually gets better season by season. I'm glad we resigned him, and I'm
- 17:48I'm I'm hoping he keeps it up because our are our boy that we both
- 17:53picked to be defensive, you know, MVP of the year for for the
- 17:56Eagles on Reddick nowhere to be found today on But but we're gonna need Sweat
- 18:03because I don't know who that other edge rush edge rusher is going to be
- 18:06outside of Reddick on this roster. I don't really see one, really,
- 18:12I mean, I'm just going through the stats. Now, I mean Derek
- 18:15Barnett, Brandon Graham, but they're older players, right, Yeah, but
- 18:19it could have been an anomaly today for Hassan Reddick. Seriously, maybe first
- 18:23game yips or something like that. I'm watching him and they were double teaming
- 18:27him a little bit here and there, but there was it was just him
- 18:30one on one throughout much of the game. Well, and here's the here's
- 18:34the thing about the Pats. They're not horror They're not a horrible team.
- 18:40Like when you said they were going to be, I was like, I
- 18:41think their offensive line is pretty good. I think they're defense is gonna be
- 18:44pretty solid. They're well coached, Like, I don't think it'll be the
- 18:47worst team in the league. So for our defensive tackles to do that to
- 18:51their offensive line that's been together for quite some time and hold this team to
- 18:56three and a half yards per rush on twenty two carries, Holy hell,
- 19:00I mean and Mac Jones Lollypop Macaroni arm throws. A couple of eight made
- 19:06it to the receivers because they're wide open down the middle of the field.
- 19:08But for the most part, they kind of dominated his team. If they
- 19:11had sacked him on one or two more times. I think we win,
- 19:15like by more than five points. So yeah, alright, very good here,
- 19:19folks. We are going to get into some grades when we come back.
- 19:23Oh well, first, really quick, folks, just want to take
- 19:26you through some box score stuff. Jalen Hurts twenty two or thirty three,
- 19:30one hundred and seventy yards averaged five point two yards per attempt, averaged five
- 19:36point two yards per temp. Folks, we're gonna be doing some gratings in
- 19:38a little bit here. One touchdowny average and then he had a rating of
- 19:42eighty nine point two. Here Mac Jones ended with a rating of ninety one
- 19:47point three. Keep that in mind and throw three touchdowns. Eagles rushing ninety
- 19:52seven yards on the day, they averaged three point nine yards per rush,
- 19:55and then with the receiving one hundred and seventy yards seven point seven yards per
- 20:00reception. So keep that in mind in terms of some box score of facts
- 20:04and figures here. But we are going to take a quick break and we
- 20:07will be back in just a bit. We're gonna get into our grades.
- 20:10Stick around, all right, we are back, Eric, Let's get into
- 20:14our grades. Unless you have any other themes, I forgot before the break
- 20:18to ask if you had any other themes or takeaways from the game that you
- 20:21wanted to get into, just real quick. On next Gen stats, I
- 20:25just saw this. Jalen Carter's six pressures were tied for the most pressures by
- 20:27any rookie defensive tackle over the last five seasons. Amazing. Oh, boy's
- 20:32gonna keep getting better, folks. Yes, Oh my gosh, it was
- 20:34the one bright spot in this game. Oh my gosh, it's honestly like
- 20:41this. The tackle duo reminds me of like Jerome Brown, Clyde Simmonson and
- 20:45like that. Yeah yeah, I mean there's no Reggie White on this team,
- 20:48but that that level of tackle between the two. Davis and Carter stay
- 20:52healthy. Yeah, all right, very good. Let's get into the grades,
- 20:55grade by unit, and then we're gonna get into the coaching grades.
- 20:57So let's start first with a quarterback. As I mentioned before the break,
- 21:02Jalen Hurts with one hundred and seventy yards on the day, only average five
- 21:07point two yards per attempt short yardage passes throughout the day, one touchdown,
- 21:11no interceptions. He was sacked three times, had a rating of eighty nine
- 21:15point two I am going to give Jalen Hurts this week a C minus.
- 21:19Eric, what do you give him? Because of his first game? I
- 21:25probably would have, you know, great amount of curves part, but the
- 21:30fumball just did it for me like that. You cannot lose that ball in
- 21:33this weather. You know. It's just like one little mistake and losing a
- 21:37dumb game like this, and it almost killed him. I got a C
- 21:41minus as well. He would have got a C plus without the fumball.
- 21:44Okay, all right, let's move to the running backs. Kenneth gained well
- 21:47fifty four yards on the day. Jalen Hurts, while he's not a running
- 21:49back, but he had thirty seven yards rushing on the day. Boston Scott
- 21:52carried the ball once three yards. DeAndre Swift carried the ball once three yards.
- 21:59Again, the running back situation very very perplexed by it. So I'm
- 22:03basically gonna give like Kenny Gainwell, I'm gonna give him a C this week.
- 22:07And you know what, he wasn't necessarily helped by the offensive line.
- 22:11We're gonna get to that in just a bit. But I'm gonna give Kenny
- 22:12Gainewell, And see, what do you give him am I just doing all
- 22:15the rushers? Are you just going game? Because he only he's only one
- 22:18actually ran them just by unit, like running back running back by unit.
- 22:22I'm just I'm I'm kind of surprised. Like when they when the when the
- 22:25broadcast came up and it was just pouring rain, I'm like, well,
- 22:26they're gonna be running the ball all day long. This is an awesome swift
- 22:30penny game, right, DeAndre for the what's his name for their side and
- 22:34Zeke and both teams ran the ball not even fifty times combined turn into a
- 22:38passing which is why the game is probably such a shitty sloppy mess. Right,
- 22:42But yeah, it's I got to tie it to the quarterbacks great C
- 22:47minus and I'm sure the offensive line is gonna get a similar grade. Very
- 22:52sloppy, not a great game, but I think the defensive line deserves the
- 22:56majority of the bad grade. I would say, okay, well move over
- 23:00to the next skilled position unit, the wide receivers and tight ends receiving.
- 23:03On the day today, I wish Dallas Gotter would have had more than one
- 23:07target. He came down with zero balls. No, that one target he
- 23:11wasn't able to come down with and honestly it was because it was some good
- 23:15defense by the Patriots the secondary there, so we had I mentioned DeVante DeVante
- 23:21Smith, A. J. Brown, and Quez Watkins earlier. I'm gonna
- 23:25give the receiving Corps overall a B because I really do think they did what
- 23:30they needed to do today. It really sucked that AJ Brown kind of bobbled
- 23:33the ball on that long bomb from from Hurts to him. Uh you know,
- 23:37it was overturned by the officials, probably should have been overturned. But
- 23:41I'm gonna give the receiving Corps B. I think they did the majority of
- 23:45what they were asked to do today. They did their jobs. What do
- 23:47you think I mean, they did what they could do. It was It
- 23:52was a messy, sloppy game. I'm sure the ball stuck trying to catch
- 23:56it, but they they are open for the most part. I wish they
- 24:02would have went deep a couple more times just to see what the hell right,
- 24:04yep, to try and like blow that game open, and I think
- 24:10I think Brown and Smith probably could have done it. I would have a
- 24:11little too conservative, I would say for the first game, Okay, when
- 24:15he had, when he had, when you kind of had their your foot
- 24:18on the Patriot's throat. That's when a more aggressive, more seasoned coordinator goes,
- 24:23you know what, fuck it, let's we're going for one here,
- 24:26Let's go up fourteen instead of seven, right, and then they should have
- 24:29done it, but not not the problem, not the fall of the passing
- 24:30corps, and uh b, we're gonna be okay, all right, same
- 24:37same grade there. Offensive line, folks, the bread and butter of what
- 24:41the Philadelphia Eagles have been aside from the defensive line, but the offensive line,
- 24:45known as the best, the best in pro football, did not look
- 24:51like the best in pro football today. Cam Jurgen's not looking like the best.
- 24:56Jordan Malata a number of penalties today. It was a sloppy game,
- 25:00I think from the offensive line, and again maybe a case of the yips.
- 25:03Maybe it was a case of the first game of the season. They
- 25:06just needed to get this out of the way, get their bodies man handled
- 25:08out there to get to get going here in this season. But I mean,
- 25:12I'm gonna give him a c eric. I mean, there were too
- 25:15many times when Kenneth Gainwell's trying to run somewhere he needed to go into a
- 25:21specific gap, and all of a sudden, there's an offensive lineman right there.
- 25:23Yes, Kenneth Gainwell should have probably seen where that offensive lineman may have
- 25:26been going. But there was just a lot of there was a lot of
- 25:30slop and rust from this offensive line. Maybe I should use the word rust.
- 25:33But still, regardless of that rust, it's a C grade for me.
- 25:37What do you give the offensive line? I'm gonna do an analogy,
- 25:42and it's it's you and I went to Penn State together, right, and
- 25:45you and your family went to the Penn State football game this saturday. Yeah,
- 25:48we were there this weekend. Yep. Yeah. It just reminded me
- 25:51like that classes are just just started again for up at Penn State. And
- 25:56remember your freshman year. The first week classes you went to every single one
- 26:00with your backpack, your notes. You're ready to take notes, like you're
- 26:03all into it. I was setting you ready to go? Yeah, setting
- 26:07ready to go. I couldn't wait by your senior year. You know,
- 26:11the first week of classes are bullshit. You can skip them and you go
- 26:14up and it's always the first week going into Labor Day and you just party
- 26:18straight through the week through that following Monday. You kind of you start a
- 26:21class on that Tuesday following Labor Day. Yes, and I feel like that's
- 26:23what the Eagles offensive line was in this game. How many of them even
- 26:29played in the preseason. They looked really rusty and like a little beer bellied
- 26:33out like I would have been, you know, after the first week of
- 26:37college. And Jason, Jason Kelsey's doing this thing with his podcast. It's
- 26:41a very popular pod. I hey, I subscribe to it. Listen.
- 26:45You know he and his brother. He looks like he was going over notes
- 26:48for the podcast last night and rather than game game time. Not all right,
- 26:52but that's not I don't care. He's in a Hall of Famer.
- 26:55Yes, by next week, the week after it, they'll be fine.
- 26:57I was fine. I wanted to you know, graduately the B plus average,
- 27:00so the first week is bullshit, I give but you know, I
- 27:03do have to give them a D plus. But I know they'll pick it
- 27:07up. All right, all right, sounds good. That's it for the
- 27:10offense. Moving over the defense, defensive line. As I mentioned earlier,
- 27:14if there's one unit that's gonna get an A from me, And yes,
- 27:17I know there was only a total of two sacks in this game. Jordan
- 27:22Davis half a sack, Josh Sweat half a sack, Jalen Carter with a
- 27:26sack, and uh, you know it's it was disappointing from a sack standpoint,
- 27:30but the pressure that the that this front put on the New England Patriots
- 27:36there, they're the reason why this team ended up inevitably winning this game.
- 27:41In my opinion, they actually get an A for me. What do you
- 27:42give the defensive line, buddy? Easily they were the only bright spot of
- 27:48the entire game, including the offensive line side of the ball. Again,
- 27:53I've always been a huge fan of the defense. Like even it's thirty five
- 27:57years an Eagles fan, I'm always been a defense of guy. Was always
- 28:00my favorite players, and you know, those late eighties defensive teams were always
- 28:06my favorite. And then even though four team defensively they were pretty damn awesome.
- 28:08And I had this team has that kind of feel, the nastiness up
- 28:12front, and I think this was a really good, like primer for what
- 28:17the season's going to look like. From those defensive tackles. A they kept
- 28:21us in the game. They saved this game. Quite frankly, the offense
- 28:23did nothing to provide them, even like an inch of space to save this
- 28:30game for them, so they definitely get in it. All right, very
- 28:32good. Let's move to the linebackers here, folks. Wow the linebackers have
- 28:37any of the roster? Oh my god, I think there's three. They
- 28:41only kept three, like we were talking about, Zach Hunningham, Christian Ellis
- 28:45and Nakobe Dean. Dear lord, I mean the Kobe Dean had seven total
- 28:51tackles on the day, Zach Hunningham had four, Christian Ellis had four as
- 28:55well. But again, the past coverage was absolutely horrible and the fact that
- 29:00there's only three on the roster is pretty scary. And Nakobe Dean going out
- 29:03with an ankle injury in the fourth quarter that should be very concerning to us.
- 29:08There are too many times Zach Cunningham just completely getting burnt from ramondre Stevenson
- 29:15around the corner, just getting the edge, and Zach Cunningham just having absolutely
- 29:19no chance at all. And look, it's talent versus talent, speed versus
- 29:23speed, I get it, but man, this linebacker corps was rough to
- 29:27watch throughout the day. I'm actually gonna give him a D. I'm gonna
- 29:32give him a D and maybe it does come down to talent at the end
- 29:33of the day. Nikobe Dean in his second year, first year starting and
- 29:38then going out with an injury, which really stinks. Hope he's going to
- 29:41be all right. Of course they'd certainly need him. We want to see
- 29:45him out here, we want him to develop, for sure, But I'm
- 29:48giving him a D man, what do you give the linebacker corps? I
- 29:52mean, so we talked about the rushing stats for the Patriots and was just
- 29:57wasn't there. But then just jumped down to the receiving and you know,
- 30:00Rmandre Stevenson was six receptions sixty four yards. Hunter Henry, I'm only five
- 30:06catches for fifty six yards, but he was open like at least ten more
- 30:10times and Mac Jones couldn't noodle the ball to him. Mike Jasecki was wide
- 30:14open a bunch, And and those are your running back, running backs and
- 30:18the tight ends, those are all the linebackers responsibility. They were terrible today
- 30:22and they're they're if if if that's if, that's what you've got for the
- 30:26rest of the year. One injury and all of a sudden you're like you're
- 30:30you're in like you're in red alert mode at that position. You know,
- 30:37I give him a D plus, I guess just because none of those receivers
- 30:41caught touch Hunter Henry did. But man, it think of a team with
- 30:45a like just would be half decent running back offensive line tight end combination.
- 30:51Like yeah, I mean, we could talk about later, but I watched
- 30:53the Niners against the Steelers. I picked the Steelers win the division. Wow,
- 30:57I don't know, but I was. I'm ready to send your text
- 31:00after that one. Yeah, but didn't you pick the Cincinnati to win the
- 31:07win the division, like go to the super Bowl? But no, I'm
- 31:11just saying, like, but I was watching that game and I'm like,
- 31:14wow, the Niners are like yeah, they're ready, like their game ready
- 31:18already, and they have a vicious tight end like running back offensive line combo.
- 31:22We had to play then we get we get demolished. So I'm glad
- 31:26we got this one out of the way against a crappy team. But man,
- 31:27you saw what could what could come of that linebacking crew against a decent
- 31:32team down the road To give me a dep plus. But that's one to
- 31:34watch where it could be it could be an F minus the rest of the
- 31:37way absolutely absolutely. I'm interested to hear what the secondary is going to be,
- 31:44the defensive backfield, what you're grade is going to be. Because we've
- 31:47got Darius Slay with the pick six, which was great. I thought Reid
- 31:51Blank and Ship was all over the place making tackles. In fact, he
- 31:53led the team in tackles with twelve total, nine solo on the day.
- 31:59I thought James Bradberry did a fantastic job as well. But there were times
- 32:04when you well, not times when but if you look at the receiving three
- 32:08hundred and sixteen yards that Mac Jones put up, my gosh, and I
- 32:13know that's not all Slay. I know it's not all on Bradberry, and
- 32:17I know it's not all on Read Blank and Ship, but there were a
- 32:21number of times in coverage where they were just way too off the ball.
- 32:24And maybe it was the cover three nonsense that we saw a ton of throughout
- 32:29this game. From Seawan to said, maybe maybe that's what it was too.
- 32:32So I am gonna I'm actually gonna go with an A minus and it's
- 32:37because of Darius Slay and that pick six. That pick six doesn't happen,
- 32:42we probably don't win this game. I mean a lot of different things had
- 32:45to happen for the Eagles to win this game and for them to keep this
- 32:50game extremely, extremely close. But that pick six from Darius Slay was absolutely
- 32:53huge. It was at the right place at the right time and did what
- 32:57he needed to do to score. I'm actually gonna give the secondary of the
- 33:01defensive backs, I'm actually gonna give an a minus. What are you thinking?
- 33:06I mean, I probably shouldn't grade give grades out based on future potential.
- 33:13A kick in the ass. Yeah, probably No, I mean just
- 33:15this game, I know, but if so, I will give the secondary
- 33:19a B plus, not the AI minus. Okay, and I'll say this
- 33:22again, some of the receivers were just two open. Kendrick Borne was what
- 33:25wide open a couple of times. Yes, And the reason I the reason
- 33:30I wanted to give him a lower score is that you looked at Mac Jones
- 33:32and I've made fun of this whole show. Man. If if they if
- 33:36they go against a better quarterback like Kirk Cousins that's coming up in four days,
- 33:40right like that, he'll he would, he'll carve us up if we
- 33:45played that way again. Yeah, now again, it was the first game
- 33:47They're coming home. Not only do we have for four days, they they
- 33:52the vikings of four days two so they're they're up against the same thing and
- 33:54they got it. You know, they have to travel on the road and
- 33:55everything. So maybe we'll be in a much better position, you know,
- 34:00organizationally on the defensive side. But it's a little scary knowing that some of
- 34:05the quarterbacks they are playing this year, if that's what the secondary is gonna
- 34:07look like against someone like a noodle arm idiot like Mac Jones, So diddiot,
- 34:13I love it all right. Coaching, we'll go through these really quick
- 34:16special teams, special teams, folks, we've got We've got Michael Clay.
- 34:22They signed Michael Clay to an extension. Folks. My goodness there what they
- 34:29had to burn. The special teams was responsible for two burn timeouts in this
- 34:34game. That is absolutely unacceptable. It is so unacceptable. You know,
- 34:39although the guys who were actually out there kind of getting the job done,
- 34:44whether it was Jake Elliott, you know, he did miss an extra point
- 34:46in the first quarter, but other than that, absolutely positive. As long
- 34:51of the day was fifty six yards Aaron siposs forty nine point three yards per
- 34:55punt, Aaron Sippos still should he stinks he shouldn't be out there there.
- 35:00He really shouldn't. Britain Covey, though he had a twenty five yard return,
- 35:04Quas Watkins had an eleven yard kick return. I was absolutely astonished by
- 35:07that that one. He was back there and he actually gave him a few
- 35:12yards here and there. But look, there was some hard hitting on the
- 35:15special teams. It is what you want to see. Guys are trying to
- 35:19make a name for themselves. I think, aside from Jake Elliot's missed extra
- 35:22point, but I mean, I'm gonna I'm gonna give him a B minus.
- 35:25I'm actually gonna give him a B minus. And that's because Michael Clay
- 35:30didn't. He was responsible again for two burnt timeouts. For God's sake,
- 35:34that is absolutely unacceptable in a game like this. If that freaking if they
- 35:37didn't they didn't have a time out at the end of the game, if
- 35:40there had been a situation where there was something that needed to be challenged,
- 35:45there was no way that they would have been able to do it because these
- 35:47time out I think I think now that I'm thinking about I'm getting really emotional
- 35:52right here. Maybe those two timeouts were in the first half. I'm forgetting
- 35:53anyway. Anyway, I'm gonna give him a B. Special teams, What
- 35:58do you give special teams? Well, and we all know that I love
- 36:00Nick Sirianni, but he needs at least one extra timeout because he's gonna screw
- 36:06on up two, which they did, and the one you're talking about was
- 36:08on fourth down defensively near the end of the game. Yeah, they wasted
- 36:15there. So yeah, three wasted timeouts out of what's six football game?
- 36:20Not good? Not good. I'm gonna give them, though, a B
- 36:22plus because Jake Elliott won this entire fucking game for them. He's the p
- 36:28of the game. He gets the game ball, he gets the champagne dumped
- 36:30on him. Without Jake Ellie, we do not win this game, not
- 36:32even close. All right, sounds good defensive coaching. Sewan To said.
- 36:38I'm gonna give Sean to said this week because I'm gonna give him a C.
- 36:43You know it was rough right out of the gate. We're talking about
- 36:45the rust throughout the course of this post game show. I'm gonna give him
- 36:47a SEA. What do you give him? I'll give him a C plus.
- 36:52Nice first game, I did not like how he came out super aggressive
- 36:57on the front with the with the front four, front seven, and but
- 37:00then he kind of, you just kind of went away from it in the
- 37:04second quarter. Yeah, I feel like I feel like they got a lead
- 37:07and he was like, okay, I'm gonna sit back now, and he
- 37:09got soft and lazy in the middle. That's one Hunter. Henry kind of
- 37:12started to take it over the game for them offensively, and then he got
- 37:15aggressive again around the fourth quarter when they needed to. I want that same
- 37:19I don't want the Jim Schwartz blitzing every goddamn time thing. But I again,
- 37:24I said it earlier. You're up sixteen nothing. I want those coordinators
- 37:29going, okay, let's get another return over and then let's scow down score.
- 37:31Make this twenty three nothing and we go home as opposed to sixteen nothing,
- 37:36and it gets kind of lazy. They kind of sag back, and
- 37:38all of a sudden, it at sixteen to ten. You're like, what
- 37:39the we had this come on? Now, it's now it's a game now,
- 37:44and now we're biting her fingernails. Half of Philadelphias going the gay seasons
- 37:46over and all you had to do. Was kind of glad you have the
- 37:52better line. That was so obvious that Carter and Davis were destroying them.
- 37:57And all you needed was one bat, one more interest or sack for for
- 38:00or for a fumble. You go down to score another one games over C
- 38:05plus, but keep you got to keep that pressure up when you're especially on
- 38:07the road, if you're up sixteen nothing against an inferior team. That was
- 38:10that was That's that's where I would give him. That's where he loses all
- 38:14the grades is holding back once he got the lead. Absolutely. All right,
- 38:19let's move over to the offensive side of things. We've got Brian Johnson
- 38:24of course and Nick Sirianni, of course. And it was certainly up and
- 38:30down for these gentlemen, a little more down than up again, rust we
- 38:32went through the whole thing. I am going to give Nick Sirianni and Brian
- 38:37Johnson. I'm gonna give him a C plus this week. I'm gonna give
- 38:39him a C plus. I don't know, what are you? What are
- 38:42you doing? D plus? I mean, I it wasn't I think it's
- 38:49fair. Yeah, yeah, I mean it's not like the offensive line was
- 38:52ready to go. But besides that, you you were. Did Pats have
- 38:55a good pretty good defense? They have some some really good, really rough
- 39:00guys in the front seven, But I don't know. I just I that's
- 39:05a that's a team you should beat, like thirty to fifteen pretty easily.
- 39:07Yeah, and again if the defense had kept up the pressure. But again
- 39:12the offense didn't either, And I didn't really were they holding back? Were
- 39:15they holding some plays in for the Vikings game? Because I didn't see a
- 39:17single play that I was like, Oh, that's innovative, but really that's
- 39:22really impressive from the new coordinator. It was like, well, I that
- 39:24looks like that looked like preseason to me. I didn't see anything special whatsoever.
- 39:29I'm hoping there it was kind of a practice game for them. Don't
- 39:32if that was don't let those get as close or word of advice to you
- 39:37guys. So what great? Did I give the game a D plus?
- 39:43It wasn't very Yeah. It it left me noodle armed? Okay, really
- 39:49yeah? I left you a noodle armed idiot? Yes, I love That
- 39:54reminds me of another another name and phrase that we like to use every Now
- 40:00I'm not gonna say it. Yea, it starts with an M. Anyway,
- 40:05good postgame show. Let us know what you're thinking about. The season
- 40:07opener for the Philadelphiagles up in Foxborough, where again they beat the New England
- 40:13Patriots by a score of twenty five to twenty. They go one and zero
- 40:17on the season thus far. They take on the Minnesota Vikings and the home
- 40:22opener this coming Thursday. We're certainly gonna be getting into that. We got
- 40:28some great content coming your way this week. I was I was actually surprised
- 40:31by something, Eric, and I'm not sure it's it's kind of a side
- 40:37here. I was surprised, because tomorrow is nine to eleven, that we
- 40:40didn't see the nine to eleven pomp and circumstance type of stuff, you know,
- 40:45that we usually tend to see. And maybe, yes, maybe after
- 40:49you know, twenty two years, things are starting to fade in terms of
- 40:52that. But I was actually kind of surprised that we didn't see anything like
- 40:55that throughout the day. Maybe I missed it, Maybe maybe I missed it
- 40:59quite frank. My in laws were over during the one o'clock games for like
- 41:02about an hour and a half and stuff, because they recently came back from
- 41:06vacation. I wanted to show us some pictures and stuff like that, which
- 41:08was nice to them. And anyway, long story short, I was just
- 41:12kind of like thinking to myself, Wow, it's nine to eleven, and
- 41:15I just I just what that day has meant to a lot of us throughout
- 41:19the course of our lives and people that we knew and things like that.
- 41:22I was kind of kind of taken aback in a way that I was like,
- 41:25Wow, are we at the point right now where you know, we're
- 41:29not really recognizing what that day was twenty two years later? I think we're
- 41:34getting to that point, Eric, So I just wanted to throw that out
- 41:37there until you know, a lot of our veterans and stuff out there who
- 41:38are listening, so I want to thank you for your service. I know
- 41:40we've got a few that right into the show, and those fallen heroes on
- 41:45nine to eleven just certainly, certainly I was certainly thinking about them on this
- 41:50day. I don't know, did you find that bizarret all? Yeah,
- 41:52maybe I missed it. But I'm not trying to bash the NFL here,
- 41:57but they do like the latch on and that kind of stuff they do,
- 42:00Yeah, and and and nothing they don't care about the truth or whatever.
- 42:02I'm not saying that, but they do like to be part of the Do
- 42:06you like to create pomp and circumstances or circumstance for that kind of thing from
- 42:09a PR standpoint, yeah, yeah, they bring the flag out. And
- 42:13but you just said something, and I've just made me think of a conversation
- 42:16I had recently with a younger employee of mine that it's been It was twenty
- 42:21two years ago and this this employee was born two thousand and one, like
- 42:25right after it happened. Oh gosh, and we got to talking about it,
- 42:28and yeah, and he was kind of like, yeah, I mean
- 42:31to my generation, it's like Pearl Harbor. Yeah, like it doesn't.
- 42:36It's so far like it's like a history book thing, if history book still
- 42:39matter. It's like an Internet thing, you know, like it never you
- 42:43know, and and unfortunately this society, there's so much weirdness around that whole
- 42:47thing. And the Internet's kind of destroyed, like there's conspiracy theories about it,
- 42:52and it definitely splintered people. And maybe the NFL was like this this
- 42:55go around, like ah, you know what, let's wait till the twenty
- 42:59five year anniversary, you know, it's it's almost because we've become so splintered
- 43:02and weird about these kinds of things, like there's just hands off. It's
- 43:06a like again, it turned into probably a huge PR conversation and they were
- 43:09like, oh, let's not touch that one this year, which is insane
- 43:12considering it was what happened to in our country and it's such a part of
- 43:15history. But absolutely, yeah, yeah, yeah, it's interesting. Yep.
- 43:19Alright, folks, Well that's gonna do it for us here again.
- 43:22We've got some great shows coming your way this week. Again, let us
- 43:25know what you're thinking about this week one Eagles game against Patriots. Philadelphia Sports

- 43:47pst, Eric at Brick Politt. You can follow me at Jeffrey Underscore Warren.
- 43:52I am on the threads as well, mister jeff Warren. That's that,
- 43:55of course, is also my Instagram. You can follow the show on
- 44:00Instagram as well. Search out Philadelphia sports table. Eric, Are you on
- 44:02the threads yet, buddy? No, No, I don't even know how
- 44:08long I'm gonna be on that thing. Anyway. I don't think it's it's
- 44:12going nowhere. It really is. Was it was like, what was the
- 44:16one mastadon? I think, oh, yeah, I'm on Mastadon too,
- 44:21and I but I haven't been on there in like a couple of months.
- 44:23I started an account, I looked at it for a day and I'm like,
- 44:27this is dumb. I'm like, I'm not here. It's it's the
- 44:30seriously, folks, as it start, maybe we could have a different conversation
- 44:32about this another time. I think the idea, concept and just overall culture
- 44:37of microblogging, which is what Twitter is and stuff, I think I think
- 44:42we are starting to see the downward spiral of it. It's gonna be around
- 44:45for a little while longer, but I think Twitter is gonna go bankrupt at
- 44:49some point. I really believe that Threads really isn't gonna go anywhere. Blue
- 44:52Sky, Mastodon, all these other words. I think. I think the
- 44:54era of microblogging is becoming less and less in important to folks, and uh
- 45:01and just just what its influence is. Anyway. I have no idea why
- 45:05I'm saying this is the end of our postgame show anyway. I don't know.
- 45:10I just Levin is is is Rogan's podcast exactly? Oh my god.
- 45:15Alright, alright, folks, you all take care and we'll catch you next time.
