- 0:11Hello friends, it's shown here. It's Thursday, it's the 20th of
- 0:15June and it's great to have your company on this morning, midday,
- 0:20afternoon, night time, whatever time it is that I find you.
- 0:25So good to have your company. Hello.
- 0:27Hello. We are going to continue reading
- 0:29through the book of James together because that's what we
- 0:31do. We are reading through books of
- 0:34the Bible, one chapter each day. And today we get into, well,
- 0:39it's a little bit of controversial territory where
- 0:41James says the controversial statement that faith without
- 0:44deeds is dead. Oh, well, that's gotten a whole
- 0:47lot of people hot under the collar.
- 0:50But what James is getting at is, as he writes to these people
- 0:53spread all over the place, he's saying if your faith doesn't
- 0:57make a difference in how you live, he is questioning whether
- 1:01it is a genuine faith at all. Because his audience has
- 1:05travelled far from their homes in Jerusalem, spread to the
- 1:08furthest corners of the world. And he wants that faith to be
- 1:12making an impact in those places, to be transforming
- 1:16people's lives. And so that is what he
- 1:18encourages. People would not conform to
- 1:21what's around them but stay true, be changed, and act as
- 1:25changed people. So let's read it together.
- 1:29Let us hear what he has to say as we read together James
- 1:34Chapter 2. My dear brothers and sisters,
- 1:48how can you claim to have faith in our glorious Lord Jesus
- 1:52Christ if you favour some people over others?
- 1:56For example, suppose someone comes to your meeting dressed in
- 1:59fancy clothes and expensive jewellery, and another comes in
- 2:04who is poor and dressed in dirty clothes.
- 2:07If you give special attention and a good seat to the rich
- 2:10person, but you say to the poor one, you can stand over there or
- 2:14else sit on the floor. Well, doesn't this
- 2:18discrimination show that your judgments are guided by evil
- 2:21motives? Listen to me, dear brothers and
- 2:25sisters, hasn't God chosen the poor in this world to be rich in
- 2:30faith? Aren't they the ones who will
- 2:32inherit the Kingdom? He promised to those who love
- 2:35him? But you dishonour the poor.
- 2:38Isn't it the rich who oppress you and drag you into court?
- 2:42Aren't they the ones who slandered Jesus Christ, whose
- 2:45noble name you bear? Yes indeed, it is good when you
- 2:50obey the royal law as found in the Scriptures.
- 2:53Love your neighbour as yourself, but if you favour some people
- 2:58over others, you are committing a sin.
- 3:01You are guilty of breaking the law.
- 3:04For the person who keeps all of the laws except one is as guilty
- 3:09as a person who has broken all of God's laws.
- 3:13For the same God who said you must not commit adultery also
- 3:18said you must not murder. So if you murder someone but do
- 3:24not commit adultery, you've still broken the law.
- 3:28So whatever you say or whatever you do, remember that you will
- 3:32be judged by the law that sets you free.
- 3:36There will be no mercy for those who have not shown mercy to
- 3:39others, but if you have been merciful, God will be merciful
- 3:44when He judges you. What good is it, dear brothers
- 3:50and sisters, if you say you have faith but don't show it by your
- 3:54actions? Can that kind of faith save
- 3:57anyone? Suppose you see your brother or
- 4:00sister who has no food or clothing, and you say goodbye
- 4:04and have a good day, stay warm and eat well.
- 4:07But then you don't give that person any food or clothing.
- 4:11What good does that do? So you see, faith by itself
- 4:16isn't enough. Unless it produces good deeds,
- 4:20it is dead and useless. Now someone may argue some
- 4:25people have faith, others have good deeds, but I say, how can
- 4:31you show me your faith if you don't have good deeds?
- 4:34I will show you my faith by my good deeds.
- 4:38You say you have faith, for you believe that there is one God
- 4:42good for you. Even the demons believe this,
- 4:45and they tremble in terror. How foolish.
- 4:49Can't you see that faith without good deeds is useless?
- 4:54Don't you remember that our ancestor was shown to be right
- 4:57with God by his actions when he offered his son Isaac on the
- 5:01altar? You see, his faith and his
- 5:04actions worked together. His actions made his faith
- 5:08complete, and so it happened just as the Scriptures say.
- 5:13Abraham believed God and God counted him as righteous because
- 5:19of his faith. He was even called the friend of
- 5:22God. So you see, we are shown to be
- 5:26right with God by what we do, not by faith alone.
- 5:31Rahab the prostitute is another example.
- 5:33She was shown to be right with God by her actions when she hid
- 5:37those messengers and sent them safely away by a different Rd.
- 5:42Just as the body is dead without breath, so our faith is dead
- 5:47with our good works. Lord, we hear in these words of
- 6:03James this challenge that what we know to be true in our hearts
- 6:11ought to make a difference in our lives and that if we don't
- 6:16do anything in alignment with your Kingdom, it's like our body
- 6:21without any breath in it. We can't do this without you.
- 6:26We need your help and we need your transformation.
- 6:29Holy Spirit, Breath of God, breathe into us your life, your
- 6:38life that will fill our eyes with light, that will change the
- 6:42lens through which we see and understand the world, and will
- 6:46provoke us into action. Holy Spirit, change us.
- 6:52Fill us with your fruits. Fill us with your power so that
- 6:57we can love and be moved by that love to show it and practical
- 7:03ways to the people around us even today.
- 7:07Lord Jesus, help our lives shine your love in a way that is
- 7:12unmissable. And when we get it wrong, and
- 7:16our fear and our doubt overwhelms our best intentions
- 7:21and we find it hard to act. Thank you, Jesus, that you are a
- 7:25gracious, loving, ever patient, ever forgiving, and ever
- 7:30companion in God who stays with us, continues to pour your
- 7:34presence into us, and guide us back to your ways.
- 7:39And so we pray all of this in your name, Jesus.
- 7:43Ah, man.
