- 0:00When I stepped into the world of HR, I set out to do one thing.
- 0:06That's a lie. Two things I said out number one
- 0:09to help build technology, best practices accountability.
- 0:15New ways of thinking, learning and execution that that are all
- 0:23based in putting employees. First, that's something I've
- 0:27always believed in. Putting employees at the center
- 0:30of your strategy so that they can be happy productive engaged.
- 0:36Efficient productive productive said that like three times, but
- 0:42I but I believe I believe that though because I think
- 0:44productivity is something that is very contextual to each and
- 0:47every employee and and what inspires them and drives in.
- 0:50To be productive is very different for every employee,
- 0:52right? So that was the first thing that
- 0:53set out to do. The second thing I set out to do
- 0:57is to hold a mirror to myself to other HR leaders to an
- 1:01organization I pulled that off with Beyond brand.
- 1:06I'm pulling that off with my decision to join top employers.
- 1:11Something I believe in and when I say hold a mirror, I mean in a
- 1:15personal life, going to therapy and having that therapist, you
- 1:19know, put a mirror up to your face and say this is who you are
- 1:21Anthony. This is what you're dealing
- 1:23with. This is what you're experiencing
- 1:25and I need you to kind of sit in that pocket of good, bad
- 1:28indifferent, whatever. It's going to be.
- 1:30And I think my goal, my second goal was to set out to help
- 1:33organizations do just that Because when we're building a
- 1:37company, whether you're a high-growth startup that has 100
- 1:40million in funding and you're just running and running and
- 1:43running or whether you are a 45-year organization that has
- 1:4715,000 employees globally and everything else in between.
- 1:52There is very seldom moments where you take a second and take
- 1:55a beat and you pause and you analyze and you hold yourself
- 2:01accountable. Very seldom.
- 2:04Do we do that very seldom? Do we reflect on our best
- 2:08practices for seldom? Do we reflect on what we have?
- 2:11And what we do not have very seldom, do we look at the fellow
- 2:15companies that is around us that we know for a fact are still in
- 2:18the town that we want to have in our organization.
- 2:22Organizations that are next to us.
- 2:23That we know for a fact are capitalizing on the market?
- 2:27Very seldom. Do we ask ourselves?
- 2:28How do we compare against them? Very seldom.
- 2:32Do we do that now? I think there's many factors of
- 2:35that and we're not going to get into the psychology of why I
- 2:37believe that happens. But I know for a fact that
- 2:39happens to because I've been that person myself, I've been in
- 2:43head of people, heads down, trying to work.
- 2:46I've been a CEO heads down, trying to work, and at times,
- 2:50I've had to force myself to say, Anthony, take a beat for a
- 2:53minute, look at what you're doing.
- 2:56Make sure what you're doing is the best they can possibly be.
- 3:01Leaf. It's the roadmap of what we have
- 3:03is a goal as an organization. And if that goal this year as
- 3:06adjusted does, the best practices that we've been
- 3:10putting in place, over the last 18 months, are they conducive,
- 3:13are they contextual, are they impactful?
- 3:16Or they going to inspire and engage and drive that that goal
- 3:20that we have forward or is it going in a different direction
- 3:23of that goal? And so I think what's most
- 3:26exciting about top employers is as it pertains to Performance
- 3:29and learning and career. Mint and engagement and
- 3:33well-being and rewards and recognition.
- 3:35The questions that we are asking here.
- 3:37Top employees is something that I know for a fact, every single
- 3:40head of people needs to ask themselves today, every single
- 3:45team of a charred individuals, and Executives need to ask
- 3:48themselves today whether your rewards and benefits and total
- 3:51comp or whether you're in the recruiting side, whether you're
- 3:54ahead of people, whether you're a generalist, I don't care what
- 3:57it is. You're doing, you need to ask
- 3:59yourself that question. So let me give you a few The
- 4:01question that I think you should be asking yourselves as a
- 4:04pertains to Learning and Development.
- 4:06Do we offer programs that are always in Freely available that
- 4:10encourage continuous learning within our organization?
- 4:15and then, as a caveat on that, are the leaders that we have in
- 4:19place supportive of those learning moments there to
- 4:24provide additional context. They are to set up processes to
- 4:29add on top of the learning in the moments that are contextual
- 4:32to The Learning and Development moments, do each and every
- 4:35employee within this company, do they feel safe comfortable?
- 4:39Do they feel like the programs have built?
- 4:41Have been built to contextually around how they learn how they
- 4:45ingest information, how they want to be developed.
- 4:48Have we even taken a be to ask our people.
- 4:51Hey, our Learning and Development programs over there.
- 4:54Do you like them? Are they really helping you
- 4:58learn? Are they really helping you do
- 5:00your job better does that sales training actually help you
- 5:03understand the product better? Did that that meeting that we
- 5:09had over there for 90 minutes around?
- 5:10How we're shifting our entire product over the next 18 months
- 5:13and how we laid out the roadmap. Did you really get that?
- 5:17Do you know how your role is going to change?
- 5:19How often do we ever ask our people these questions?
- 5:25Another question to ask is, do we measure the do we measure our
- 5:29employees knowledge and capabilities pre, and post and
- 5:32assessment pre and post our Learning and Development moment.
- 5:36Do we actually do that? Or we give an assessment to say
- 5:41here's what you know now or don't know.
- 5:45You go through your two weeks, three weeks, four weeks of
- 5:47Learning and Development, and here's, Richard don't know, or
- 5:49don't know. And looking at that delineation.
- 5:54From a career perspective or a managers you know, creating
- 5:58objectives that include kpis that are related to Career
- 6:01Development that are created to the related to supporting team
- 6:04members around their growth. Do we have internal digital
- 6:08career mapping career mapping marketplaces where we're
- 6:11bringing together, you know, different individuals in the
- 6:14company that have a desire to tap into different experiences
- 6:17to learn and navigate new new new opportunities so they can
- 6:20develop their careers so they can do more for their families.
- 6:23So they can Make themselves feel better, but also impact the
- 6:26company in the bottom line. Do we support mobility and
- 6:30career development for our employees and their?
- 6:32So what does that tangibly look like?
- 6:35These are questions that I know for a fact, every single
- 6:38company, every single leader, listening, we all know, we all
- 6:42can admit. We should be asking these
- 6:43questions more often and we're just simply not and so, I hope
- 6:48this episode very briefly Inspires you to do that.
- 6:53I hope this episode inspires you to take another look at a
- 6:56company like talking points because that's that.
- 6:59These are the questions that were deciding to ask.
- 7:02We want you to take a moment and don't be afraid of these
- 7:05questions. Lean into these questions.
- 7:08Lean into a third-party lean into another person.
- 7:12Holding a mirror up to your face.
- 7:16I've been through a lot, my life personally, and the best moments
- 7:19of always been the moments. We are things really look tough.
- 7:25I've made a series of mistakes that have put me in a really
- 7:27difficult situation and the best moments where I'm able to shift,
- 7:30it shift that moment and turn it into a positive.
- 7:32Have been the moment where I look myself in the mirror and I
- 7:36say this is who you are, this is what you're doing, right?
- 7:40This is what you're doing wrong and here's how you have to
- 7:42change. When you're able to do that, we
- 7:46were able to ask yourself, honest, deep impactful authentic
- 7:51questions. Only then can you change only
- 7:53then, can you grow? And if our goals, as an
- 7:55organization, is to have top level employees?
- 7:59For our goal is an organization to really Drive impactful
- 8:03situations home for our goal. As an organization is to recruit
- 8:06the best talent. If our goal as an organization,
- 8:07is to roll out the best product rollout, the best Services move
- 8:11as fast as we can, to be able to, to A larger market gaps in
- 8:15white spaces. If our goal is to drive a more
- 8:18contextual and nuanced and impactful and financially, you
- 8:23know, driven bottom line. If our goal is to just
- 8:26completely dominate. Look at that is the goal of
- 8:28anyone listening to like if you have an athletic background if
- 8:30you super competitive, if that is anyone's goal, then ask
- 8:35yourself questions like this will be incredibly important.
- 8:38It's common sense and makes the most sense.
- 8:43So I don't know, maybe I'm crazy.
- 8:46I've been told that. I don't think I am, though.
- 8:49Maybe my wife would disagree, but I really believe that going
- 8:54through top employers or if you don't even want to do that, just
- 8:56asking yourself those questions. Personally can do yourself a lot
- 9:01of good. So, as always just a few
- 9:05thoughts, just a few perspectives would definitely
- 9:08talk soon. So, as always just a few
- 9:05thoughts, just a few perspectives would definitely
- 9:08talk soon.
