- 0:01The work is the shortcut. There's a story behind that.
- 0:05This is your daily message from Chad #1152 to upgrade your
- 0:09mental game today by telling yourself a better story.
- 0:11Because the most important story you hear is the story you tell
- 0:13yourself. This message is dedicated to
- 0:15Jamie Lynn Austell Smith, the hardest worker I know.
- 0:19Here's the upgrade. You may be hunting for the
- 0:21shortcut, but upgraded. Think he knows the work is the
- 0:23shortcut. Here's the story.
- 0:26Most people celebrate their birthday.
- 0:28John D Rockefeller celebrated a different day, more.
- 0:32He called it Job Day, September 26th, 1855.
- 0:36It was his personal holiday. He had a commemorative flag
- 0:39flown over his home and it marked the occasion.
- 0:41That of the day he said gave him identity, independence in the
- 0:44path out of the instability of his upbringing.
- 0:47See, Rockefeller's childhood was unstable.
- 0:49His father was a con man who came and went.
- 0:52His mother held the family together and when he was 16 he
- 0:54moved to Cleveland and made one thing his full time occupation
- 0:58to find work. He went door to door to banks,
- 1:02railroads, merchants, Commission houses.
- 1:04He made a list of businesses to pursue and he asked to speak to
- 1:07whoever was in charge. He did this six days a week for
- 1:10six straight weeks and when he ran out of businesses he started
- 1:14the list over and walked it again.
- 1:16He later called it quote, the business of looking for work in
- 1:19quote. Rejection didn't discourage him.
- 1:22It made him more determined. And then on September 26th, a
- 1:26Cleveland Commission house called Hewitt and Tuttle hired
- 1:29him as a bookkeeper. He was hired for about a dollar
- 1:32a day. A dollar a day.
- 1:35And Rockefeller treated it as the hinge his whole life turned
- 1:38on. He said his entire future seemed
- 1:41to depend on that day. He wondered for the rest of his
- 1:44life what would have happened if he hadn't gotten it.
- 1:47So every year after, he celebrated September 26th as Job
- 1:51Day. It was a bigger day than his
- 1:54birthday, more than an anniversary, because his
- 1:56birthday was handed to him. Job Day he earned.
- 2:00And here's what he did with it. He didn't act like a 16 year old
- 2:04clerk. He acted like he owned the
- 2:06place. He checked every bill.
- 2:08He mastered the books. He learned the business better
- 2:10than the men above them. That diligence made the next
- 2:13door open and the next all the way to Standard Oil.
- 2:17He wasn't waiting for the shortcut.
- 2:19The work was the shortcut. It gave him identity,
- 2:23independence and a way out. Dorothy Sayers once argued that
- 2:27work isn't the curse we treat it as.
- 2:30It's not just something we endure to get to the weekend.
- 2:33It's meant to be done for the love of doing a thing well worth
- 2:37doing. The work itself is the reward.
- 2:42You keep looking for the thing that comes after the work, the
- 2:46break, the connection, the lucky day that the work is the thing
- 2:50that makes the luck. Work doesn't have to be
- 2:53something you get paid for either, just the use of your
- 2:56abilities and a thing worth doing.
- 2:59Rockefeller went looking for a job for six weeks and the
- 3:01looking was already the work that made him who he was.
- 3:05The better story to tell yourself is the work is the
- 3:08shortcut. Tell me a story of your own job
- 3:12day to from chadsmith@gmail.com. Send someone a text and ask them
- 3:16what's the day you'd celebrate more than your birthday.
