- 0:00And an opportunity to speak with our friend Jason Savage,
- 0:02executive director of The Maine Republican Party.
- 0:04And every time I talk to him, we inch closer and closer to 0
- 0:08hour. Primary day is right around the
- 0:10corner. Voting has begun.
- 0:12People will be making decisions in the next week or so.
- 0:16It's unbelievably exciting. How are you doing this morning,
- 0:18Jason Savage? I am good, Matt.
- 0:21And so we March on. That is exactly how I feel.
- 0:24Right now. And so we March on here.
- 0:26Tell me a little bit, Sir, about your reaction to the UNH poll
- 0:29that you saw yesterday. There's obviously many results
- 0:33inside there, including Collins V Plattner.
- 0:35You have the primary and the Democratic Party.
- 0:37The primary and the Republican Party in the CD Two race for the
- 0:40Democrats, which I was just highlighting for the audience,
- 0:43said that Jordan Wood was winning.
- 0:47I don't know what your reaction to, frankly, all this polling
- 0:50is, right? We don't get much of it.
- 0:51And when we do, I'm always sitting here dumping on it.
- 0:55And it may, I feel like a little guilty about it.
- 0:57Like, you know, I'm just, I'm just, you know, a naysayer.
- 1:01But boy, I find so little to to like in in what I'm seeing here
- 1:05in terms of what their methodology is and and the
- 1:08results that they're getting being out of alignment with what
- 1:10I really think is really going on out there.
- 1:11What do you think is actually happening versus what they're
- 1:13showing? Well.
- 1:15Again, I mean, I, I believe that the trend is your friend, so to
- 1:19speak, but the polling has to be done professionally and
- 1:23accurately. You know there at least like the
- 1:26sample on this one is like almost a quarter independence
- 1:30and I I mean. It's not going to be on Election
- 1:34Day. Let's.
- 1:34Just no, it's not going to be. And, and that's the thing, like
- 1:37I watch people spend a lot of money trying to get independence
- 1:40to vote in primaries and, and it just doesn't really happen.
- 1:42And, and so if you, if you want to live in the, the timeline
- 1:47where 23% of the primary electorate is independent
- 1:50voters, then that that might be a, a, you know, a reasonably
- 1:55accurate poll. And then the, the, the general,
- 1:58the head to head in the Senate again.
- 2:00It's like, if I remember correctly, Senator Collins wins
- 2:05independence by three, but somehow they end up with her
- 2:08down. Not like it's like the last one
- 2:11where she, you know, the, the gender gap in law.
- 2:15It's just somebody's, it's like the poles are smoking crack or
- 2:18something. I don't know.
- 2:20Yeah. I mean it's a nine point lead
- 2:22for Plattner. And the last time that I will
- 2:27say this, I mean you said the trend is your friend, right.
- 2:29If you go back to their February poll, you know Plattner was
- 2:33leading by 11. So the margins actually going
- 2:36down there. So whatever reality is, whether
- 2:39he is up 10 points or whether he's down 10 points, that might
- 2:43tell you a little something, that it's starting to edge more
- 2:47narrowly between the two of them wherever reality may fall.
- 2:50But I just, this ain't reality. I mean, I, I, you know, I know,
- 2:53I, it's a dangerous thing to constantly bring up that they
- 2:56were wrong so badly in 2020, the last time the Collins ran.
- 3:00Because, you know, they're wrong until they're right.
- 3:02And you can't just guarantee that they're wrong and wrong by
- 3:05the same margin every time, obviously.
- 3:08And yet it was the same polls. It was Pan Atlantic, it was UNH,
- 3:12it was these pollsters that don't have a lot of experience
- 3:14in Maine and have suspect methodologies that just didn't
- 3:17get it right before. And I don't see any sign of
- 3:19improvement in what they're doing that would give me any
- 3:22confidence that their numbers are reflecting reality.
- 3:26It, it's one thing to be wrong, it's another one to be wrong to
- 3:29such a scale that it's like leading to arrogance and, and
- 3:37you know, cockiness and destructiveness.
- 3:39And, and in 2020, you know, it was like, it was like the
- 3:43polling being wrong in 2020 was rocket fuel for the left.
- 3:47And they kept, they kept putting more money in because they
- 3:50thought they were winning and they were, they were never
- 3:53winning. And but it was, it was like
- 3:56rocket fuel. They were, they were doing it.
- 3:57I, I really feel like it was every time something came out.
- 4:01The said Gideon was ahead of Collins.
- 4:03It became this big thing where they got another push, another
- 4:06wave of donations, and so it started to feed on itself.
- 4:08And I think that that's what's happening here, too.
- 4:12Yeah. Jason Savage joining us,
- 4:13executive director of The Maine Republican Party.
- 4:15And you know, the other thing that it, it strikes me as being
- 4:18illustrative of is that you had a narrative form because of
- 4:24those polls that were existing in 2020.
- 4:27Every, I mean, every single one of them for the better part of a
- 4:29year plus said the same thing, some version of Gideon +4 to
- 4:33Gideon plus like 9 or 10. And every media report that was
- 4:37written in main media sources, certainly Bangor Daily News in
- 4:41the Press Herald, but also national outlets.
- 4:43I mean, Gideon wasn't on the cover of Time magazine or
- 4:45anything, but, you know, every New York Times piece, every
- 4:49Washington Post piece, everything that you saw in the
- 4:52national news was talking about Gideon as though she had already
- 4:55won. And that, like, Collins was
- 4:57doomed and like, you know, her time is over and all this other
- 5:01stuff. And then as soon as the election
- 5:03happened and that was all wrong, they just sort of ignored that
- 5:07year of their hype. You know, they that that hyping
- 5:10up of this candidate and this loss that never materialized.
- 5:14It's just like it never happened.
- 5:15They just moved on. Big, no big deal.
- 5:17Yeah, sure. We were wrong for more than a
- 5:18year. No introspection because the
- 5:20goal here was not to be accurate.
- 5:22The goal was to keep adding fuel to the fire.
- 5:24And you know, Sarah Gideon's name was not synonymous with
- 5:27porta potties and Nazi tattoos. So there's a, there's a, a
- 5:32different, a disconnect there as well.
- 5:34So, you know, I think, I think that that lack of introspection
- 5:37is just, it kind of goes to motive, right?
- 5:40If, if your motive is to continue feeding the narrative
- 5:44of the left, then you do it until you are wrong.
- 5:47And then you take a break for a year and then you do it again.
- 5:49Because your your objective is to destroy somebody on the right
- 5:54side of the political spectrum. It's not about being right and
- 5:57and worrying about your reputation, which is kind of the
- 6:00whole thing right now, I guess with that with a lot of people
- 6:02over there. Jason Savage turning our
- 6:04attention to the Republican primary.
- 6:05Obviously in the position you're in, I'm not going to ask you
- 6:07about who you're you're going to be voting for or who you think
- 6:09is really winning or any of that nonsense.
- 6:11Won't go there. But I do have a question for you
- 6:14as it relates to the system that we're using to select this
- 6:17nominee. Rank choice voting will be used
- 6:20in Maine. Do you have a recommendation?
- 6:23I know that you get asked as probably often as I do, you
- 6:26know, hey, what do I, what should you do?
- 6:28Like what, what, what am I going to do?
- 6:30Like, you know, should I rank? Should I not rank?
- 6:31Should I partially rank? Should I do bullet voting?
- 6:35Like what should I do? Do you have a recommendation or
- 6:38advice for people and how they approach this?
- 6:41Sure. Yeah.
- 6:41And actually just a couple weeks ago I did AI did a seminar with
- 6:44Laurel Libby on this. My best advice is you can vote
- 6:49for one candidate straight across.
- 6:51You can rank your candidates. My best advice is to finish your
- 6:54ballot one way or the other. And I tell people that because
- 6:58you you want to establish voter intent, you know, you want to
- 7:01show and by. By finish your ballot you mean
- 7:03go all the all 7 rounds with either a bullet vote or ranking
- 7:08all 7? Yep, Yep, Because then you're
- 7:10establishing that you there was intent there.
- 7:12I, I'll give this example. My, my wife is left-handed and
- 7:16one of the things that being a lefty that she experiences
- 7:18sometimes she writes in her hand like sweeps on the ink and like
- 7:22smudges it. And you know, for somebody who's
- 7:25left-handed or for some maybe the machine, like the ballots
- 7:28got a little crease in it or something.
- 7:31You, if you Dean gets like smudged or, or whatever and it
- 7:34doesn't read the first round, then it will continue reading
- 7:36the second third. If you go to a recount and you
- 7:39know, the lawyers are looking at it and they can see that, you
- 7:43know, that ballot in the first round was for this candidate and
- 7:46it's, you know, mostly filled in and then you ranked everybody
- 7:48else. You can argue voter intent in
- 7:50either of those cases. So I tell everybody to finish
- 7:52your ballot. If you just bullet vote in the
- 7:54first round and something happens and that ballots damaged
- 7:58or smudged, it's going to be hard to argue that voter intent
- 8:01was that vote. And you know, so it's, it's
- 8:03really in like the the margins of whether it's a realistic like
- 8:07likely concern or not, but it is on the outside.
- 8:10It's it's a concern. So just finish your ballot,
- 8:12either rank everybody or vote straight across for the person
- 8:15you want Your your vote will be counted either way.
- 8:17All. Right.
- 8:17So I have to ask you inevitable question if indeed something
- 8:21happens in this primary where a winner loses, much like Bruce
- 8:24Palquin did back in the day where you know, candidate X had
- 8:27like 30 or 35% of the vote and you know, they were up by like 8
- 8:31or 10 points or something like that.
- 8:32But in the end, the retabulations from round 234,
- 8:36etcetera, ultimately hand it to someone else.
- 8:40Do you think that the candidates will all sort of accept that,
- 8:44move on, point at the person who won after the end of the rank
- 8:47choice voting vote and say, well, that's our guy, we're not
- 8:50testing anything, there's no argument, etcetera?
- 8:52Or do you think we might have a food fight if that kind of thing
- 8:54happens? I hope we don't have a food
- 8:57fight because with just a few months to go before we have to
- 9:01actually take on the Democrat, if they have their nominee and
- 9:04they're running straight forward towards the the finish line and
- 9:07we're sitting back arguing with each other, it's destructive not
- 9:12just for the party or for our our candidate, but for the
- 9:14people of Maine. I mean, I don't think the people
- 9:16of Maine can afford four more years of whether it's Nirav Shah
- 9:20or Shanna Bellows or Troy Jackson, like I don't think we
- 9:24can afford that. So I hope that we all come
- 9:26together. We have a unity breakfast
- 9:29planned for June 20th and we're going to pull everybody together
- 9:32there. We're hoping, really fingers
- 9:34crossed that we'll have a a candidate, you know, by then,
- 9:38even under ranked choice voting. But I would hope that everybody
- 9:42will say for the good of the state of Maine, we're going to
- 9:44come together around the person who's the winner here and, and
- 9:48move forward and, and win. You know, that's the goal here.
- 9:50It's winning. It's I think any of our
- 9:52candidates would make great governors and the party is ready
- 9:56to support whoever it is. But we're just waiting for our
- 9:58waiting for our nominee. Waiting for the nominee, indeed.
- 10:02Final question, I think I have time for here, Jason.
- 10:05Over on the Democratic side of the aisle, one of the things
- 10:07that the not really reliable crummy polling that we've seen
- 10:10has shown us is volatility. You know, near of Shaw seems to
- 10:14be, you know, a front runner, if you want to call him that or
- 10:17whatever. But, you know, this last UNH
- 10:18poll had Troy Jackson up there tied with him.
- 10:21I've seen Hannah Pingree up top there.
- 10:23I've seen Angus King in second place.
- 10:25I've seen Shanna Bellows consistently sort of up high.
- 10:28I mean, I have no idea what to think about who's doing what in
- 10:32that primary. But I do know that there is a
- 10:34triple alliance, a triumvirate that has formed between the
- 10:37progressives seeking to deny either Angus King or near of
- 10:40Shaw the ability to win. Which is I think what the
- 10:43designers of ranked choice voting really dreamed of, right?
- 10:47Was it was having, you know, alliances form where people are
- 10:51recommending other people in that primary for second and
- 10:55third choice votes, etcetera. But all it's going to do is make
- 10:57sure that the most extreme Democrat wins, right?
- 10:59What's your what's your take on what's happening over there in
- 11:01the Democratic Party right now? Well, I, I think both sides have
- 11:05some of that going on. There's just they're featuring,
- 11:09there's a lot more. I think that the, the
- 11:11volatility, I think it was either last week or the week
- 11:13before I said on, on here with you that the Pert, the primary
- 11:18candidate on the DEMP side who spent the most time or most
- 11:21visibility with the Nazi tattoo guy was going to have an
- 11:24advantage. And I think Troy Jackson's been
- 11:25doing a lot of that lately. So I think he has the benefit
- 11:29both of being part of that three person alliance and also getting
- 11:32to stand on stage with the Nazi tattoo guy and, and the, the
- 11:37self-described socialist from Vermont.
- 11:39So, you know, I, I think that I'm not surprised by that.
- 11:42That may be the the most accurate thing in that poll.
- 11:47All right. Well, that's a good place to
- 11:48end. Sadly, I am out of time.
- 11:49Jason Savage, appreciate it, as always.
- 11:51We'll talk again next Thursday and it'll be 0 or at that point
- 11:55for real, so look forward to it. Thanks a lot, Jason.
