- 1:48OK? Today I sit down with author
- 1:51Elisa Morgan. Elisa wrote a book called
- 1:54Christmas Changes Everything, and she has an awesome podcast
- 1:59called God Hears Her. In this episode, Elisa talks
- 2:03about how Jesus's birth changed everything for every character
- 2:08in the Christmas story. Elisa's insights as to how these
- 2:12stories of the people in the Bible, such as Elizabeth, Mary,
- 2:16Zechariah, Simon, the Shepherds, Anna and the mad guy can teach
- 2:21us, as we say, yes to God to believe in him with this
- 2:26abundant joy and hope. It's such a fabulous listen as
- 2:30we are getting nearer to the day that we celebrate the birth of
- 2:34our sweet Savior Jesus Christ. So Merry Christmas, you guys,
- 2:39and I hope yours is filled with his Lovejoy and pizza season and
- 2:43every season to come. Now here's my guest, Elisa
- 2:47Morgan. Hello, Elisa.
- 2:49Welcome to She Speaks Life. I'm so excited you're here with
- 2:53us today. Always good to talk with our
- 2:55friends, isn't it? It is, yes, and especially at
- 2:59this time. We're approaching Christmas and
- 3:04we have decorations going on and we've got the Christmas story
- 3:10going on and this is just the right timing to talk about the
- 3:16miracle of Jesus birth and just the characters involved in that.
- 3:23And you wrote a book called Christmas Changes Everything,
- 3:28which I absolutely love that title.
- 3:31So before we dive into more of that, I would love for you to
- 3:35share what is a life verse of yours or just a favorite
- 3:39scripture verse that is your go to and why?
- 3:43I love John 1516 and it is I have chosen you to bear fruit.
- 3:50Fruit that will last. And God used that in my life
- 3:54when he was calling me into a leadership role with MOPS
- 3:58International, now called the Momco.
- 4:00And I just thought, Shazam, you know me, how could how could you
- 4:05possibly use me as just a normal lady, you know?
- 4:08And that was a profound moment when I realized that our real
- 4:13legacy is contributing into the lives of others who become
- 4:18Kingdom followers as well. That's that's why.
- 4:22And I've clung to that for years and years and years.
- 4:25That's a good one. So true.
- 4:27I would love for us to just get right into your book and just
- 4:34the different characters that you shared these examples and it
- 4:39was just so good. I've I've been reading it on my
- 4:42Kendall and it's just been filling me up and get me in the
- 4:46spirit of Christmas and what its true meaning is.
- 4:50And so where would you like to start with that?
- 4:54What are some characters in the story that you want to share?
- 4:59Sure, I want to dive right in, but but I think I just want to
- 5:02pause for a second and say the reason I titled the book
- 5:05Christmas Changes Everything is that, you know, Christmas is
- 5:08everywhere. We're immersed in Christmas in
- 5:11the US especially, but worldwide.
- 5:13We're immersed in the holiday, the presence, the Santa Claus,
- 5:17the family, the magical moments, the the memories of our
- 5:23childhood, the festivities, the decorations, everything you just
- 5:27described. But for all of us, for each one
- 5:30of us, I think it's really helpful to put our finger on
- 5:33when does Christmas really become Christmas to us?
- 5:37When does it become more than the family gathering together,
- 5:40or the carolers, or the choirs, or the stockings, or whatever?
- 5:44When does it become really what it is, The birth of Christ, the
- 5:48birth of hope in our hearts. And when Christmas truly becomes
- 5:53Christmas, that's when it changes everything.
- 5:56So, you know, I just want to encourage us as we're listening
- 5:58here and thinking about these original Christmas characters.
- 6:02Let's do that work inside ourselves.
- 6:04When did Christmas become really Christmas to me?
- 6:07And let's resurrect that, you know, because it's not just a
- 6:10day, it's an ongoing experience of a relationship.
- 6:13I like to start with Mary because that's really where the
- 6:17announcement came from, right? You know, Mary was just a a very
- 6:22young girl, 11-12 years old, betrothed, which meant engaged
- 6:27but not yet married and not in a sexual relationship with Joseph.
- 6:32She probably still lived with her own family.
- 6:35They were an agrarian or agricultural if you will, family
- 6:40not really wealthy. She had loved God all her life,
- 6:44been raised in the faith of the Old Testament God, Yahweh.
- 6:49She loved him dearly and when the Angel comes to her and
- 6:52announces you are going to be with child by the Holy Spirit,
- 6:57Mary's response is stunning to me.
- 7:00It's just so shy because she doesn't say.
- 7:05Impossible, I know. Like many of us probably would.
- 7:10Yeah, totally, she instead says. How's this going to happen?
- 7:15So there's a great curiosity. She, as scripture tells us she's
- 7:19troubled in her spirit. But it's not like this doubt.
- 7:23It's this curiosity of wow, just wow.
- 7:28And Mary says yes to God. You know, for each one of the
- 7:30characters, I I picked a word that describes their response to
- 7:35Christmas. And Mary's is the word accept.
- 7:38She said yes to God. She says yes when the the Angel
- 7:42comes to her. She says yes when she goes and
- 7:45visits Elizabeth, her cousin. And she says yes repeatedly as
- 7:50Jesus grows. And I've thought a lot about
- 7:53that. For me too.
- 7:54Jamie, is that Mary's Yes seems crazy to us.
- 7:59How could she do that? I mean, she was going to expose
- 8:02herself to the shame of her culture.
- 8:06That would really dis teen pregnancy.
- 8:09She would expose herself to the surprise and shock of her fiance
- 8:15Joseph, and potentially disappointing him.
- 8:17But she also would expose herself to the stunning
- 8:22devastation of her own son's death and a cross.
- 8:26And I think we find the secret to her.
- 8:28Yes, when we dig down in the first couple of chapters of The
- 8:31Book of Luke, because Luke tells us twice the same thing.
- 8:36One is after the shepherds come and the other is after.
- 8:40Jesus is about 12 years old and they can't find him when they're
- 8:43returning from the temple. And he tells us that she
- 8:46treasured these things, she pondered them and treasured them
- 8:49in his heart. In her heart.
- 8:51And and that word really means to to bundle up to to to place
- 8:55together, almost like the word dialogue, to layer, if you will,
- 9:00layering yeses. And I think for Merry Christmas
- 9:03changed everything when she said one yes after another, just
- 9:07continually accepting God's call in her life.
- 9:11And that made me pause and think, How has God invited me
- 9:17into His Kingdom work and into what His plans are in our world?
- 9:22And will I say yes and continue to say yes?
- 9:26And how will Christmas, the birth of Christ, the reality of
- 9:29Christ, change me when I do so That's a lot.
- 9:31That's what gets us started right there.
- 9:33Yeah, no, I love it because as I was reading, I think this is
- 9:38just how the Holy Spirit works. He's speaking uniquely to each
- 9:42person's heart. And for me, having her.
- 9:45Yes. And not completely understanding
- 9:49it or, you know, it's like, how can this be?
- 9:52I look at all my guesses in the past and they were well, okay.
- 9:58Yes, I'll podcast Lord. But I've never podcast before.
- 10:03I've never done this before. I don't even know where to
- 10:05start. I don't even know what stuff I
- 10:08need to buy for it. In fact, I've always been
- 10:14terrified to speak like this is a fear that I'm facing, you
- 10:19know? And so it's always these
- 10:22impossibles going on in our head the same thing moving from
- 10:26Southern California to Austin. My Yes.
- 10:29And we were totally broke. We didn't have a job at the
- 10:34time, but God wanted to transition us out of California
- 10:40to Austin. But it was the same thing.
- 10:43It's not like we had it all planned out.
- 10:45Oh, we have finances to move us. Oh, we've got a job waiting for
- 10:50us in Austin. No, it was just purely out of
- 10:54faith and just facing the How is this gonna happen?
- 11:00You know? And I think that often when God
- 11:02speaks to us, those yeses are going to follow with those
- 11:08unknowns uncertainties because He solely wants us to rely on
- 11:13Him, His power and see His glory be manifested in the details.
- 11:21So true, Jamie. And, you know, we can kind of
- 11:26separate Mary out and think, well, you know, she was the
- 11:28mother of God, and so she had this special ability to say yes.
- 11:31Well, you know, she was a human. She was just a regular mom,
- 11:35right. And I think she probably said
- 11:38yes while saying and. 12 probably, right?
- 11:4212 years old, probably. Like. 12 years old exactly.
- 11:46So I think she probably said yes while saying how is this going
- 11:49to happen and yes while saying what are you doing?
- 11:52And yes she was saying how, why me, you know, and and that's
- 11:55often how we say it. I mean, if you think about my My
- 11:59first yes to God was when I was around 16.
- 12:01And I remember asking him to be in my life.
- 12:04And that, yes, led to another yes to eventually go to seminary
- 12:08and then to another yes to try my my voice at speaking.
- 12:12The way you're describing, Jamie, you know, and sometimes
- 12:14our yes like to becoming a mom means OK.
- 12:17I'm also going to be saying yes to my children's choices, which
- 12:21might be different from my choices or yes to loving my
- 12:26brother has meant yes to becoming his caregiver in the
- 12:30latter years of his life. You know, just on and on.
- 12:34We don't, we don't always understand.
- 12:36What we do know is that we serve a good God who has our good in
- 12:41mind and really is pledged to benefit us from that
- 12:46relationship. And we can trust his character
- 12:48as we nod and acceptance. Yeah, so good.
- 12:53And I feel like it's kind of contagious too.
- 12:56Soon as we start saying yes to that and seeing how God, you
- 13:00know, he just is waiting for us to take that action step and say
- 13:04yes. And then he shows us another
- 13:06thing and we say yes, and then he reveals and shows.
- 13:09And so I just love that, you know, it's just a almost like a
- 13:14domino effect. It's contagious.
- 13:16You know, if we're stepping out in that first, yes, then I think
- 13:20it kind of, you know, it's like, OK, I saw him there.
- 13:24He's faithful in that. Therefore, he'll be faithful in
- 13:28this next step too. So yeah, I love what you talked
- 13:34about with Joseph. Can we talk about Joseph a
- 13:37little bit? Because I have something.
- 13:40Oh, good. I mean.
- 13:43Yeah, how it connects for you. So Joseph was probably a little
- 13:46older than Mary, typically 7 to 10 years older.
- 13:49And he would be on his own. He would probably be, I mean,
- 13:53with his parents too. But he would probably be a
- 13:55tradesman. We know him through tradition as
- 13:59a Carpenter, but what we do know is that Joseph, it has a really
- 14:06stunning experience too, where he has a dream that marries with
- 14:12child and he knows he's not the father.
- 14:15And so Joseph goes immediately from being betrothed, looking
- 14:20forward to his marriage, to his virgin, to his treasured.
- 14:26I almost imagine that, you know, the perfect wedding, the perfect
- 14:29life, the perfect everything. And it's like, as Joseph
- 14:33receives this word, it's like all of his dreams break and
- 14:40Joseph goes as Christmas changes him.
- 14:43He goes from being this grieving Carpenter to a husband of Mary
- 14:50who's with child, not his, and eventually the stepfather of
- 14:55Jesus. And I just think he he
- 14:59represents such a beautiful yielding on the surface it it
- 15:05looks like God's got it all wrong.
- 15:09It looks like Joseph is going to lead the most loser life
- 15:14compared to what he had hoped for.
- 15:17But what actually ends up happening as he moves through
- 15:20this shocking revelation that Mary is with child, that God
- 15:27reveals to Joseph the divine plan, and that Joseph too, has
- 15:33been invited into the Christmas story.
- 15:36And he yields his brokenness. He he yields his reputation.
- 15:42He thinks he's going to divorce Mary before he understands all
- 15:45of this, and he's going to give her honor so that she can lift
- 15:49her head in the community. He that's the kind of man he
- 15:52was. He was merciful.
- 15:54He was just, he was careful. He was tender.
- 15:58He loved her. And he was like, shoot, if she
- 16:01made a mistake, I'm going to protect her.
- 16:04But I'm not going to go through with this because that's not the
- 16:06right thing. And then God reveals to him what
- 16:08the situation is, and he yields. He yields his dream of what the
- 16:13perfect little happy life is going to look like to what God
- 16:16wants to do. And, you know, tradition also
- 16:18shows that he didn't live a very long life.
- 16:20We don't know exactly when he passed or how, but we do know
- 16:24that Mary and Jesus and his brothers, you know, were without
- 16:31a father for her husband for a long time.
- 16:34And so we just see this man in Joseph who is is kind of quiet
- 16:39in scripture and in the Christmas story you don't see a
- 16:41whole lot about him. And yet God continues to reveal
- 16:43to Him through dreams. You know, take this baby and go
- 16:47to Egypt because Herod's going to be after him or or go to the
- 16:50census and and have Mary give birth there, Just continually
- 16:53providing Joseph to provide for Mary and Jesus by yielding.
- 17:00That's so good. And for me, reading that story,
- 17:04I look back at last year's Christmas and how it just began
- 17:11with so much expectation. I did a episode every single day
- 17:17on an Advent. I used my friend's devotional
- 17:21and I just was fired up, wanted to share the gospel on the
- 17:26podcast every single day and the shopping was done early.
- 17:32I mean, I just felt on top of it last Christmas and.
- 17:36That's dangerous. So dangerous now that I look
- 17:40back, right? I'm just like, oh, this is going
- 17:43to be a perfect Christmas just. And then two days before
- 17:48Christmas, my son is putting some gifts in his car to take to
- 17:56a family member's house. And we in Austin sometimes have
- 18:03these ice storms, if you will, and it doesn't last long.
- 18:07But this was really a a layer of ice.
- 18:11We forgot to turn the sprinklers off so it was thick.
- 18:17Otherwise, the ice would have been thin, but unfortunately,
- 18:21very thick ice on the sidewalk as he's putting in the presence
- 18:26in his car and he slips and he doesn't just, you know, do a
- 18:32little break. I mean, it was a dislocation
- 18:36twist and a complete snap off. I mean, it was bad.
- 18:41And, you know, I'm screaming in terror.
- 18:44His wife is screaming in terror. I mean, we're just like, Oh my
- 18:49gosh. And I've been blessed to live
- 18:53this long with three kids that are now older without any
- 18:58breaks. And so this was the first one
- 19:02and he was 22 and so took him to the ER, you know, and if anybody
- 19:10has gone through a break, you know that it's just like not one
- 19:14and done you're. I mean it was OK we need
- 19:17surgery. We need to, you know, set that
- 19:20up. There's a bunch of pre op stuff
- 19:23before surgery and then you know, waiting for the surgery
- 19:28and he's completely immobile. Right.
- 19:31So it was not a Christmas I expected.
- 19:35I was heartbroken. He was, you know, obviously not
- 19:40what he planned either. But I'm going, Oh my gosh, what
- 19:43about my perfect Christmas? And then I get a little bit
- 19:47frustrated because I'm like, Lord every day.
- 19:50I was sharing your gospel, and this is what I'm getting at the
- 19:55end, right? And then on top of that, I get
- 19:59sick on Christmas Day and I think just all the stress and
- 20:05just the the disappointment and the let down.
- 20:08I just got so sick I had to go to bed and not be around my
- 20:14loved ones at Christmas and enjoy all that Christmas brings
- 20:18on Christmas Day. So I felt like, Joseph, where
- 20:22you're that brokenness where you're expecting your life.
- 20:27You know, dreams are dash. You expect your life to go this
- 20:30way. You expect Christmas to go this
- 20:32way, and then it doesn't. But you know what?
- 20:35God is faithful. We don't know some of the
- 20:38reasons why things happen, but if anything, it drew me closer
- 20:43to him. And yeah, in my frustration,
- 20:46like God, why didn't you protect?
- 20:48You start going through all those whys, but at the end of
- 20:51the day you're going, what lesson do I need to learn here?
- 20:55And I think for me it was too much of A doing for God and not
- 21:01just a being with him. And I think I was so tied up
- 21:08with look at what I did. All this stuff do, do, do, but
- 21:12really God's just like, you know what all that stuff that you
- 21:16think is a perfect Christmas like, that's not the true
- 21:20meaning of Christmas. It's me.
- 21:22It's it's Jesus Christ. That's me.
- 21:25And that's the that's the deal. See, Christmas became Christmas
- 21:28to you in a whole different dimension, you know, as you
- 21:31yielded. And I guess that's why I I love
- 21:34these characters because they show us facets of Christmas.
- 21:38It's like they they get us windows into the true meaning,
- 21:42you know, So Mary's journey is about saying yes and accepting
- 21:45God's call. And Joseph's is about yielding
- 21:48his way to God's way. And there's one other one, I
- 21:51mean, there's 10 characters, but one other one I want to touch on
- 21:53is Herod. And that's very surprising.
- 21:56People are like, why'd you put Herod in the book?
- 21:59Because he's a huge part of the Christmas story.
- 22:03And the word that I chose for Herod is learn.
- 22:07Because he didn't. He did not learn.
- 22:10He had the opportunity for Christmas to change everything
- 22:14in his life, but he refused Christmas.
- 22:17He rejected Christmas. He maniacally tried to control
- 22:22Christmas, tried to usurp Christmas, and he was a schemer
- 22:27and he turned to a Slayer. And he tried to you know he did
- 22:30kill all the the little boys under two years old because he
- 22:33was so threatened by another king coming on this planet.
- 22:38And it it grieves me and you know, not to be too dramatic,
- 22:42but you know, isn't it real. You know, Jamie, that we can
- 22:46refuse Christmas in given seasons.
- 22:48We can reject the message of Christmas in given seasons.
- 22:52We can refuse to learn in given seasons.
- 22:55And what grief, you know what? What a loss.
- 22:59And and I don't want to be in that spot where I miss Christmas
- 23:03and I miss the redemptive power of the reality of the message of
- 23:09Jesus, because I'm set on me being king, if you, if you will,
- 23:14you know. So good.
- 23:15Is there anything else that you would love to share about
- 23:19Christmas changes everything before we end here?
- 23:23Yeah, I. Think there's a couple of like
- 23:25takeaways or? Yes.
- 23:27Action points. If we could even call on that.
- 23:30The first one is I'm struck by what's our word.
- 23:35You know for Christmas all of these words and and you know
- 23:38pick one of these words. But when Jesus is welcoming
- 23:42little children tomb and blessing them and their nannies
- 23:45are bringing them and their parents are bringing them and
- 23:47religious leaders are bringing them to Jesus to be blessed and
- 23:51the disciples are uncomfortable with this.
- 23:53Jesus is Whoever welcomes a little child welcomes me.
- 23:58And I think about what are we doing to welcome Christmas each
- 24:01year? What are we doing to welcome
- 24:04Jesus into our celebrations, into our understandings, into
- 24:07our lives, into our broken dreams?
- 24:11You know, what are we doing to welcome?
- 24:12So that's a word I want to really leave with everyone to
- 24:14thinking about how how can you welcome Christmas this year?
- 24:19And then the second action point it is to maybe intentionally
- 24:23pick up this little book, Christmas Changes Everything and
- 24:26take two characters a week during Advent and immerse
- 24:30yourself in these characters, how they were changed and ask
- 24:36God how he wants to change you this year.
- 24:39You know, who are you really identifying with?
- 24:42And how is God using that word that he used with them for you?
- 24:46Yeah. So good.
- 24:48Thank you so much, Elisa, for coming on here and sharing those
- 24:53wonderful books. So where can people connect with
- 24:56you and find Christmas changes Everything?
- 25:00Just go to elisamorgan.com or on Social.
- 25:04It's at Elisa Morgan, author and you can find Christmas Changes
- 25:08Everything anywhere. You know, pretty much anywhere
