- 0:00Speaker 1: We're back with Dan Hurley. This is the Yukon Men's
- 0:02Speaker 1: Basketball Coaches Show on Mike Crispino Coach. On the way
- 0:06Speaker 1: to Maui, You're going to have I think thirteen hours
- 0:10Speaker 1: in a plane. I'm thinking about what I'm going to
- 0:12Speaker 1: How many books can I read? I think maybe for
- 0:16Speaker 1: sure one, maybe two. I'm curious, what's your take on
- 0:20Speaker 1: a long trip like that? What are you going to
- 0:22Speaker 1: be doing? Obviously you'll be working on some stuff, but
- 0:25Speaker 1: if you're going to have any downtime on a trip
- 0:27Speaker 1: like that, what types of things will you do?
- 0:31Speaker 2: That's a good question. I haven't put much that much
- 0:34Speaker 2: thought into that one, but I would say, off the
- 0:37Speaker 2: top of my top of my brain, I would say
- 0:41Speaker 2: I'd have concerns just being trapped with this group for
- 0:45Speaker 2: such a long period. I know they would say, I'd
- 0:48Speaker 2: imagine the same thing about me here how they couldn't
- 0:51Speaker 2: imagine being on a plane with me for thirteen hours straight.
- 0:56Speaker 2: But you probably cant end up watching you know, four
- 1:03Speaker 2: or five hours of film and and uh, you know,
- 1:06Speaker 2: do some uh you know, do your kind of scheduling
- 1:10Speaker 2: of the week out there, and and uh you know,
- 1:13Speaker 2: you may catch a little bit of sleep, do some reading,
- 1:16Speaker 2: you know, maybe, uh, I'll walk around the plane to
- 1:19Speaker 2: and talk to players and talk to various people. I
- 1:23Speaker 2: think it's gonna go fast.
- 1:25Speaker 1: Really wow, I hope you're right. Uh uh So, yeah, watching,
- 1:31Speaker 1: you're gonna watch tape. You're gonna you're gonna now you know,
- 1:33Speaker 1: you've got Memphis that's first, Colorado or Michigan State. So
- 1:37Speaker 1: do you watch both of them while you're on the
- 1:39Speaker 1: plane or do you wait till after the game you
- 1:42Speaker 1: get their game and find out who you're playing, or
- 1:44Speaker 1: do you just get ahead on it?
- 1:46Speaker 2: Yeah? No, you just you folk. For me, I just
- 1:48Speaker 2: focus on the first game. I've never ever you know,
- 1:52Speaker 2: the whoever doesn't you know, whoever doesn't have the first
- 1:55Speaker 2: scout is going to have those those second teams, and
- 1:59Speaker 2: you know, the staff has proven to do an excellent
- 2:01Speaker 2: job with the scouting. So I'll just focus on Memphis
- 2:05Speaker 2: and then, uh, you know, when that game is over, obviously,
- 2:10Speaker 2: you know, we'll deal with whoever. You know we're gonna
- 2:13Speaker 2: play with the next one. Yeah.
- 2:15Speaker 1: That that Memphis team where you're getting ahead of ourselves
- 2:18Speaker 1: a little bit, But they got a sophomore of this
- 2:20Speaker 1: PJ Haggerty came from Tulsa, a high scoring guy.
- 2:23Speaker 2: They had PJ.
- 2:24Speaker 1: Clarter. Another guy transferred from Utsa, uh Tyrese Hunter. Another
- 2:29Speaker 1: transfer was at a couple places, Texas and Iowa State.
- 2:33Speaker 1: It gets back to that how some of these teams
- 2:36Speaker 1: in this country changed their roster. I mean a year
- 2:40Speaker 1: to year, I mean completely right. I mean they're going
- 2:42Speaker 1: to look way different than the team that won twenty
- 2:45Speaker 1: two games last year for Penny Hardaway.
- 2:48Speaker 2: Ye, it. There's a lot of different ways you could
- 2:50Speaker 2: do it. I think there's a lot of different ways
- 2:52Speaker 2: you could. You could build a team or build a
- 2:54Speaker 2: build a program, and uh, you know the the the
- 2:58Speaker 2: portal and and and l have. Yeah, I've certainly you know,
- 3:03Speaker 2: changed away. The teams are built and programs are built,
- 3:09Speaker 2: and yeah, I think that we all have a way
- 3:13Speaker 2: that we like to u you know that we like
- 3:15Speaker 2: to do things. And uh, you know, they're gonna be physical,
- 3:18Speaker 2: and they're gonna be athletic and and uh, you know,
- 3:20Speaker 2: I think Pennies does it. You know, Penny's a great
- 3:22Speaker 2: coach and it'll be a tough game.
- 3:24Speaker 1: Yeah, he's had a pretty good record there in his
- 3:26Speaker 1: six years. One hundred and thirty three and sixty one.
- 3:31Speaker 1: You know, Jade and Ross didn't play in the opener,
- 3:33Speaker 1: but in the second game he got fourteen points. I'm
- 3:36Speaker 1: looking at him and I look at Isaiah Abraham and
- 3:39Speaker 1: the size and the skill levels those guys have, and
- 3:42Speaker 1: but very little experience obviously on this level. What in
- 3:46Speaker 1: your mind those two players, what what's the upside? What
- 3:50Speaker 1: could they accomplish this month or in the next couple
- 3:54Speaker 1: months or by the time Yu Kon gets to that
- 3:56Speaker 1: big eiaet schedule.
- 3:59Speaker 2: I mean, just I guess what, you just hope you
- 4:01Speaker 2: could get them to play, you know, at the level
- 4:05Speaker 2: that we've had our players play at the last couple
- 4:08Speaker 2: of years. I think is what you're what you're hoping for.
- 4:12Speaker 2: They obviously have a lot of physical talent, and uh,
- 4:16Speaker 2: there's certainly are our types of guys. I think the
- 4:18Speaker 2: best way for us to build it is with build
- 4:21Speaker 2: our teams is with you know, homegrown kids, kids we
- 4:24Speaker 2: recruit out of high school that uh you know that
- 4:27Speaker 2: come right to us. I think that's a better model
- 4:29Speaker 2: for us, at least that's our thinking. That's our thinking
- 4:33Speaker 2: right now. So yeah, I think there's obviously a relationship there,
- 4:40Speaker 2: so we we there's a there's a trust level, and uh,
- 4:44Speaker 2: you know, they have got really good physical talent. They're
- 4:46Speaker 2: going to get better as the year goes on and
- 4:47Speaker 2: develop and I think, uh, you know, when you know,
- 4:51Speaker 2: as we get later in the year, I think these
- 4:53Speaker 2: guys will be playing at a real high level.
- 4:55Speaker 1: Yeah, that was That was a lot of the fun
- 4:57Speaker 1: of watching these last couple of championship teams. How players
- 5:01Speaker 1: just got better and as the tournaments came they were
- 5:05Speaker 1: able to flourish. I mean, I think about Stefan Cassel
- 5:09Speaker 1: getting twenty one against Alabama in the Final four, fourth
- 5:13Speaker 1: pick with the Spurs, and Klinging getting twenty two and
- 5:17Speaker 1: sixteen against Marquette in the Big East Final, and then
- 5:20Speaker 1: that Illinois game still stands out of my mind. That
- 5:23Speaker 1: might be one of the greatest things I've ever seen.
- 5:26Speaker 1: I mean, I know the Huskies won two championships and
- 5:30Speaker 1: won a couple games in the Final four, but man
- 5:32Speaker 1: thirty nothing and with what Clinging was doing five blocks
- 5:36Speaker 1: in that game, even you Dan Hurley had to be
- 5:39Speaker 1: impressed by that.
- 5:41Speaker 2: Don was awesome. I mean Donovan, I mean, Donovan the
- 5:45Speaker 2: human being was awesome. Donovan the basketball player was awesome,
- 5:50Speaker 2: and he was a great leader and just a person
- 5:55Speaker 2: that really impacted the team in such a positive way.
- 6:00Speaker 2: Uh with with you know, with the leadership and an
- 6:04Speaker 2: energy and and uh an attitude of just being a
- 6:07Speaker 2: total winner, you know, a total total baller, total winner
- 6:11Speaker 2: and and a game changer.
- 6:15Speaker 1: Do you have to find that in this year's team
- 6:18Speaker 1: to go to great heights again?
- 6:20Speaker 2: I mean there's no I mean, the centers are not
- 6:25Speaker 2: I'm gonna give us what, you know, that type of
- 6:27Speaker 2: a performance obviously individually, but you know, every every team
- 6:31Speaker 2: is every team is different. This team is gonna have
- 6:34Speaker 2: to win, you know, in a in a different way.
- 6:36Speaker 2: And uh, you know, I think the strength of this
- 6:38Speaker 2: group is going to be the strength of numbers. I think, uh,
- 6:42Speaker 2: I think last year we had a very very high
- 6:45Speaker 2: end first seven, starting five in particular, but our first
- 6:49Speaker 2: seven last year was a high end for seven. Whereas
- 6:53Speaker 2: I think this year, I think we, uh, you know,
- 6:56Speaker 2: we're more of a strength of numbers. I think where
- 6:58Speaker 2: you know, potentially it's an it's a nine player rotation,
- 7:01Speaker 2: and then they give you plenty of chances to be successful.
- 7:06Speaker 1: Coach. Final thing, Tom Moore coming up, I was going
- 7:08Speaker 1: to talk to as an assistant coach. Been with you
- 7:10Speaker 1: since uri you've had long term relationships with your staff.
- 7:13Speaker 1: I mean, come on, a young and Luke Murray, these
- 7:15Speaker 1: guys are obviously invaluable in what you do keeping them
- 7:20Speaker 1: together like you've been able to do. Are you surprised
- 7:23Speaker 1: so far that these guys are having flown off to
- 7:26Speaker 1: other head coaching jobs.
- 7:29Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm surprised, but I'm in a way I'm not
- 7:32Speaker 2: with the landscape of college now. It's you know, but
- 7:35Speaker 2: with NIL and the portal, the load of mid major
- 7:40Speaker 2: Division one head coaching opportunities at a lot of those
- 7:44Speaker 2: schools that don't have the resources to support NIL or
- 7:51Speaker 2: don't have the resources to support a well run program
- 7:56Speaker 2: that can really compete at a championship level. I think
- 7:58Speaker 2: at the mid major level there's just not that many opportunities,
- 8:03Speaker 2: you know, like a VCU, you know type of place
- 8:07Speaker 2: where you know, maybe those guys would would be interested
- 8:10Speaker 2: in those opportunities. I think if it was if this
- 8:14Speaker 2: was you know, five, six, seven, eight years ago, you know,
- 8:19Speaker 2: those guys would be would be gone by now. But
- 8:21Speaker 2: I think it's more of them being picky about the
- 8:25Speaker 2: opportunities that makes sense. Uh, makes sense for them.
- 8:30Speaker 1: We're happy they're hanging around, that's for sure. The coach
- 8:33Speaker 1: on the plane out there, don't don't forget to come by.
- 8:36Speaker 1: Talk to the broadcast team. Pump us up a little
- 8:38Speaker 1: for that that experience, and Moud.
- 8:42Speaker 2: I'll be bored. I'll be looking for you, all right.
- 8:46Speaker 1: I'll try to entertain you if you show up in
- 8:48Speaker 1: our on our row.
- 8:50Speaker 2: Early.
- 8:51Speaker 1: Thanks for on the Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show. We'll
- 8:55Speaker 1: be back with more in a moment. On lear Field,
