- 2:05First Deftones record in five years.
- 2:08The fan base is in the tether. As you would expect.
- 2:12Them to be because you know they haven't had a record.
- 2:15To complain about in a long. Ass time.
- 2:19So here I am, doing the damn thing one more time.

- 2:34David Wright of the. Mets.
- 2:38So let's see, I did a new album review last week of the brand
- 2:45new Insight album. I don't know if you're a fan of
- 2:48the. Extreme metals, but.
- 2:51It was pretty damn awesome. Insight, one of the better new.
- 2:55Albums of the year and then I thought I would come back in
- 2:58and. Do a review of private music.
- 3:02Far and away the biggest and most well read.
- 3:04Review of the year for ghost cults so far, almost. 5000 views
- 3:08of our and watches and shares and comments on our review,
- 3:12which I'm really proud of our own major.
- 3:15In Brutomeso wrote about it. I'll talk about her review.
- 3:18Later on. And yeah, tell me drop a comment
- 3:22if you're excited about this new Deftones album.
- 3:24What your favorite? Song is.
- 3:27You know you don't like it. I'm I'm here to listen to all
- 3:32comers, but I'm. Going to give my unfiltered
- 3:35unbiased review. I've been a music reviewer for
- 3:3720. Years I've interviewed.
- 3:38Thousands of bands. Ghost Cult mag.
- 3:41If you're not familiar. Please get acquainted.
- 3:43We are your 24/7 news source. Not unlike Blabbermouth, not
- 3:47unlike Metal sucks, not unlike not.
- 3:49Fest the website not unlike. Metal Insider.
- 3:53Metal Injection. We're one of them.
- 3:55So if. You like the music press?
- 3:56That's what I do. That's what we do.
- 3:58We have. People all over.
- 3:59The world writing. Reviews going to concerts and
- 4:02festivals all the time and doing album reviews.
- 4:05So fun times. It is about 10.
- 4:10Million degrees so I'm. Freaking my liquid down.
- 4:14Let's do this damn thing. I got the.
- 4:17I got the slide deck in the stage.
- 4:18Here and I made it just a little bit bigger so.
- 4:21You can appreciate it the best experience for this.

- 4:28I like hanging out on TikTok, so feel free to join the
- 4:33conversation. I'm greatly.
- 4:35Appreciative of everyone. That's here at October.
- 4:38Is here Mad Max what's up? Danielle Danella Dr. Hey, what's
- 4:43up? We were just talking about your
- 4:44band yesterday. Good stuff.
- 4:47So, yeah, thanks for being here and we'll get underway now that
- 4:50everybody. It seems to be joining.
- 4:55So Private Music Man came out today on Warner Records.
- 4:59Deftones is one of those interesting bands that has been
- 5:01on the same label their entire career.
- 5:03You hear about bands, you know, like, honestly.
- 5:06Just like a job. Changing record labels is the
- 5:09only way a lot of times to get a promotion or a raise.
- 5:12And Deftones have been on Warner.
- 5:15They signed originally to Maverick.
- 5:16Which was an offshoot. Of Madonna's vanity label
- 5:19Maverick under Warner Brothers Records, and they have been on
- 5:23the same label since 1994 when they signed.
- 5:26So that's kind of unbelievable. And Slipknot has talked about a
- 5:30lot of issues with Roadrunner Roadrunners.
- 5:32Putting out Slipknots big anniversary album of their 25th.
- 5:35Anniversary of their debut. Which turned 25.
- 5:39Last year, but so. Private music.
- 5:42We ran our review earlier in the week and it just blew up and
- 5:45we're really stoked about it. And I wanted to bring you.
- 5:49A more personal review of that album.
- 5:51I listened to it today with my. Girlfriend.
- 5:53It was really amazing. We both were.
- 5:56Commenting on it and and feeling affected.
- 5:58By it I'm a big Deftones. Fan right out of the gate I have
- 6:02been. From the very beginning, from
- 6:04adrenaline. So I'm going to give you a.
- 6:07Little bit what we. Do here on these.
- 6:08Videos is a little bit of an overview about Deftones.
- 6:11For people who don't know about them and want to know some
- 6:13Deftones facts and information and then break.
- 6:17Down the record a little bit and talk about that.
- 6:19So thanks for. Being here, let's do the thing
- 6:22and again. Drop a comment this.
- 6:24Is your show to? Scooter, what up my friend?

- 8:42Thanks for being here. All right, that minutiae is out
- 8:46of the. Way let's talk about.
- 8:48Deftones private music man they have done one of.
- 8:52The better run ups to an. Album release I have seen in a
- 8:55while. Similar to their last album when
- 8:58they dropped. Ohms it was.
- 8:59A free for all. During the pandemic era, and
- 9:03they really only had about. 8 weeks between the announcement
- 9:06of the record and the first single and then the drop.
- 9:09So they did the same thing again, this time five years
- 9:11later. With a much less.
- 9:14Timeline. A much compressed timeline.
- 9:16They really. Announced the record 5 weeks ago
- 9:19with the first. Single My mind is a mountain
- 9:22drop. One more single two weeks.
- 9:24Ago Milk of the. Madonna and then that's it.
- 9:27This has been the record, but they've been.
- 9:28Done a very nice. Job at kind of really engaging
- 9:32their fan base. They did these listening
- 9:34parties. Earlier in the week.
- 9:36They just announced them basically late.
- 9:38Last week or early? Over the weekend, they were
- 9:40happy they took place. During this week, you signed up
- 9:44at a website at Deftones all around the world.
- 9:47They had these listening parties where you came in and they gave
- 9:50you a blanket and an eye mask they want.
- 9:52You to come in dark in the room really like just only use your.
- 9:57Ears and experience the album and not.
- 9:59Anything else I thought it was really.
- 10:00Interesting skull bashers here. What up?
- 10:02What up? Topher is back.
- 10:03The name is Sporky B. What up, what up?
- 10:05Good to see you all here. Thanks so much for popping in.
- 10:10Piercing metal is here and Super Bianch.
- 10:13Toes, Hey, it's like. Family popping in the stream.
- 10:17Thanks so much for being able to talk about the new Deftones
- 10:20today. So yeah, I love that they did
- 10:23these things in addition to these listening parties in
- 10:26which, like I said, they. Gave away swag like.
- 10:28Pens. With the private music logo.
- 10:30Which kind? Of looks like a snake.
- 10:31Head they gave away. These eye masks and blankets and
- 10:34other things and then today at Independent Record stores and
- 10:38major. Record stores all over the
- 10:40world. They're having these Deftones
- 10:41listening parties in the. Store.
- 10:43Where they're giving away. Posters.
- 10:45And laminates. And shirts and.
- 10:47All kinds of things. There's also an indie.
- 10:49Exclusive version of the. Deftones, I know the.
- 10:52Striking dark bright green is super fun with the white.
- 10:56Snake and I think. Snakes.
- 10:58Are a theme of this album or or just the?
- 11:00Behavior of snakes. The snake getting its skin I
- 11:03think was a. Personal theme and we'll.
- 11:05Talk about that. In a bit and.
- 11:08I believe here's the purple variant of the green album.
- 11:11So it's the. Purple indie alternative
- 11:14variant. Of the record, most of the main.
- 11:17Vinyl variants. Are green and white white?
- 11:22Translucent and also. I think there's a couple of
- 11:28obviously black. 180 gram Rebecca Vorjak is here.
- 11:33And that is here our. Post is here Enter Sandman is
- 11:36here Mr. Enter. Sandman to you.
- 11:39So good to see you all here on a.
- 11:41Friday night. So yeah, I'm very excited about
- 11:48these. Different vinyl.
- 11:49Variants these different things super cool to get to go live
- 11:54with you and talk more about this.
- 11:55So let's get let's drill down by the.
- 11:57Way just randomly if you were wondering what the girl from the
- 12:01cover were around the fur looks. Like now she is like a 40 year
- 12:05old woman, a 45 year old woman. Her birthday was this week.
- 12:08So very cool. I found this.
- 12:10Picture I was showed it last night in my other live stream.
- 12:12I thought it was fun. Let's just talk about Deftones.
- 12:16Facts. Some things if you're not, if
- 12:18you somehow are not familiar with the band or maybe you did
- 12:20not know the Deftones formed way back in the 80s and 1989.
- 12:25Steph Carpenter. Got in a skateboarding accident,
- 12:28he was hit by a car. I know there's been a lot of
- 12:30mythology around that, but that's when he.
- 12:33Learned how to play guitar. He taught himself to play guitar
- 12:36because he was. In a wheelchair.
- 12:37For a little while, he's fine. Otherwise.
- 12:40Continue to skateboard and. Damage his body for years, all
- 12:42the. Deftones guys loved BMX biking
- 12:44and skateboarding and graffiti and things.
- 12:48They have released 10. Studio albums in 30.
- 12:50Years since 1995 there was a. Series of Deftones demos.
- 12:55And pre release material they did.
- 12:58Put out a sort of an. EP before they put out
- 13:01Adrenaline on Maverick Records as I mentioned at the top.
- 13:05Their OG bassist and personal. Hero to me Chi Chang died in
- 13:092013. That was after he was in a
- 13:11persistent and vegetative state. For almost 10 years.
- 13:16Very tragic. Definitely altered the course of
- 13:18the band of their records. Obviously, die hard Deftones
- 13:22fans think every of the all of their records.
- 13:24Are great, but honestly white pony is considered.
- 13:26Their absolute. 9:50 Classic. I tend to agree.
- 13:30They have a lost unreleased album called Eros.
- 13:33We've been Talking. A lot about.
- 13:35Bands with records. They they're sitting on that
- 13:37they never put out. Slipknot is one of those bands.
- 13:40Eros is the record they were working on when she was.
- 13:43Injured in his car accident and was in a coma and then they
- 13:47scrapped. The record.
- 13:48They have occasionally played songs from Eros, including the
- 13:51song Eros at their Dia dello Stephomes festival.
- 13:55That happens every. Year they have 10 million albums
- 13:58sold approximately, depending on streaming.
- 14:01Their most streamed. Song I believe is changing the
- 14:04House of Flies at 582,000,000 streams on platforms like
- 14:09Spotify. Gore was ghost Colts album of
- 14:13the. Year in 2016 and Ohms was ghost
- 14:16cult album of the year in 2020 was kind of like an.
- 14:18Upset. I wouldn't say that the majority
- 14:21of our staff are Deftones fans, but I just.
- 14:24Think they recognize the? Album and it's it's qualities.
- 14:28The only other band to have won twice.
- 14:31Is Ghost? So it'll be very interesting to
- 14:33see with Ghost and Deftones both with the album that albums out
- 14:36this year. Will they compete against each
- 14:39other and? Or take votes.
- 14:40Away from each other maybe? It should be very interesting.
- 14:43We'll do our. Album of the year voting and
- 14:44reveal in December some facts about.
- 14:48Private Music. It was recorded over 2023 and 24
- 14:52band has toured. Played a lot of.
- 14:54Festivals. Much has been talked about Steph
- 14:58Carpenter not touring anymore. Not flying for sure, and
- 15:02certainly not going anywhere. A tour bus.
- 15:04Doesn't go. I mean, the guy feels like he's
- 15:06made a lot of money. He's.
- 15:07Talked openly about his. Anxiety and I think people I
- 15:10know it's. You know, people who are not.
- 15:12Deftones fans want to clown on Steph.
- 15:14Because he's, you know. Smokes a lot of weed and he's
- 15:17maybe a Flat Earth guy or whatever, he's got some.
- 15:19Radical thoughts about conspiracy theories but like he
- 15:21feels like. He's made enough money and if
- 15:23he's happy, staying home. Let him stay home.
- 15:26And make music. And he has launched a new band.
- 15:29A sort of supergroup. Called Solid Victo.
- 15:31Chino, of course, has crosses. I wonder if Chino.
- 15:35Won't do a solo album someday that sounds even.
- 15:37More different than all these other things.
- 15:40This album was produced. Co.
- 15:42Produced by the band. And Nick rescue Lennox Nick has
- 15:45produced Diamond Eyes and. Koi no Yo Khan, which are He's
- 15:49the only other producer to produce 3 Deftones records
- 15:52besides Terry Gate, the infamous producer of Pantera.
- 15:55And Soundgarden. Who has produced 4 Deftones
- 15:58records? Fred Sablen is played bass on
- 16:02the new record Private. Music, but he has not been made
- 16:04a. Full member yet?
- 16:06Replacing Sergio. Vega.
- 16:08We'll talk about him in a second.
- 16:09And I think. Before we heard the private
- 16:12music first music first single my.
- 16:15Mind is a mountain. I think a lot.
- 16:17Hey, Jamie, what's up? I think a lot of people, we're
- 16:20here talking. About the new Deftones record
- 16:22Private Music, I'm doing a little review and recap here.
- 16:26I think a lot of people. Were ohms was a.
- 16:28Predominantly, you know. Sue, Gazy and Dream.
- 16:32Pop It was heavy. For sure.
- 16:34But it was much more. You know, sort of.
- 16:36Romantic, you know, not that different than going to Yo Khan
- 16:41or Saturday Night Wrist. Which the band doesn't seem.
- 16:44To like very much because of the experience making it.
- 16:47With producer Bob Esperan of Pink.
- 16:49Floyd fame and I felt like maybe having seen them live the last.
- 16:56Few years. And watch them kill it.
- 16:58I felt like, oh, they're going. To ride this head, they're going
- 17:01to like. Do a heavy album.
- 17:02And I was right. This is a very heavy album.
- 17:05It definitely has some melodic. Stuff and and still the shoegazy
- 17:09deftone sound. Is still a part of this.
- 17:11Record, but I absolutely. I'm thrilled.
- 17:14With how much, how many bangers are on this?
- 17:16Record so. First and foremost.
- 17:17First thoughts about private music is it's heavier and more
- 17:21riffy like the first 3 Deftones records the heavier stuff
- 17:25there's. Definitely some new metal.
- 17:27Riffs. There's some.
- 17:28Thrashy riffs on here. But there's also some, you know,
- 17:33we'll talk about guitar layering and things like that, that, that
- 17:35stuff. Likes the different dichotomy.
- 17:38That lay within him as a as a writer and and song maker.
- 17:43You know. I think these are super
- 17:44interesting. Things.
- 17:46Industrial schlock is here. What's up?
- 17:48Cool name so also. You know, gave a new interview
- 17:53just this week. Where he said that a lot of this
- 17:55record is directly inspired by him becoming sober.
- 17:59After the pandemic, he was drinking too much during the
- 18:01pandemic and that maybe it was affecting him.
- 18:04And his work ethic. And maybe his abilities even.
- 18:08I think the last four or five years.
- 18:09Chino has obviously got very. Fit.
- 18:12And maybe drinking less is a big part of that.
- 18:14And he looks fantastic. He sounds fantastic.
- 18:17He's got tremendous stamina as a performer.
- 18:20Everyone who has seen Deftones knows he jumps all.
- 18:22Around the stage. The stage is actually like
- 18:25designed and built for him to jump around a lot on stage.
- 18:28Pretty cool. I feel like Chino is a lot more
- 18:33experimental. On this album comparatively.
- 18:36To the poems and even gore. I think those.
- 18:40Albums had a little more straight up vocal style from.
- 18:42Him and I think he really. Stretched.
- 18:44Himself out on this album in new ways.
- 18:48And also in very familiar ways. So if you love Chino and you
- 18:51love that tones and there's that.
- 18:52Familiar, romantic, sensual. Vocals by Chino.
- 18:56You're going to love. That, but I think there's also
- 18:59absolute killer screaming. There's a little less screaming
- 19:03than usually, but it's in places.
- 19:05There's some rapping that's like.
- 19:07Sneaking back in, you know Chino always wanted to distance.
- 19:10The band away from new metal, especially after Back to School
- 19:14and white. Pony in the 1st.
- 19:15Few albums. And there's even some vocal
- 19:18range stuff on here that I have. Never heard him do before, just
- 19:21very deep. And resonant.
- 19:23And surprising. I think will really shock.
- 19:26Even long time things. I think a few.
- 19:28People have noted that the bass lines.
- 19:30Are very old school deftone style like Chi Cheng used to do
- 19:35on. Adrenaline and around the fur.
- 19:37With like very rolly bass. Lines Ostinato.
- 19:40Bass, which is a classical music term that means kind of a
- 19:43repeating, throbbing bass. Line.
- 19:46Which gives a lot of movement to the songs, whatever the drums in
- 19:49the torch. Great drumming by Abe
- 19:52Cunningham. Absolutely beautiful.
- 19:54Guitar layering by Steph. They did not let any of the
- 19:57touring guitar players collaborate in terms of writing.
- 20:00Chino also plays. Guitar as you know.
- 20:02I think Frank also plays guitar. And Speaking of Frank, I think
- 20:06Frank has a much more prominent role on the.
- 20:09Band now like he's further up in the mix.
- 20:12Maybe that has to do with Nick in the band just highlighting
- 20:15Frank a lot more, which is really cool.
- 20:17I always. Felt he was an integral.
- 20:18Part of the band. He actually played on the 1st 2
- 20:21records and didn't become a full member until White Pony or right
- 20:24before it. So you there's definitely some
- 20:27surprising keyboard. And kind of turntablist stuff.
- 20:30Quite scratching, but things that you know he's doing.
- 20:33Creatively with cents and keys and turntables that Frank is
- 20:37known for. And again, like I said, Chino
- 20:40absolutely flirting with new metal.
- 20:41Again, rapping. Just a little bit.
- 20:43Just a little bit of that staccato.
- 20:45Delivery. He does so freaking well.
- 20:49So talking a little bit more about the album now, I'm just
- 20:52going to highlight some of the songs I have thoughts on every
- 20:54song. Obviously, we've heard my mind
- 20:56as a mountain as the. First single video is played a
- 20:58lot. Was teased on social media
- 21:00heavily. It's just an absolute banger.
- 21:02It does. What it needs to do, it opens up
- 21:04the record. They always have killer first.
- 21:06Tracks they never. Ease into anything really.
- 21:09That I can think of. They're all.
- 21:10Pretty raging lock. Club is very heavy.
- 21:14With another great Steph chop riff.
- 21:17Dice. This has been talked about as
- 21:18maybe the pinnacle track on the album by fans and I would tend.
- 21:22To agree also. I think it really is a
- 21:25phenomenal track and it is apparently directly referencing
- 21:29Chino. 'S sobriety, which again?
- 21:32I think has been a key thing for him to get healthy.
- 21:35And also to. Make better music.
- 21:37I think that's, you know, just a wonderful thing.
- 21:41Infinite has an absolute. Sick riff And really.
- 21:44Reminds me of Kono Yokan and Diamond Eyes with these.
- 21:47Big choruses, but I got. Very urgent verse.
- 21:52Source. Souvenir is the longest track on
- 21:55the album, is very Moody and interesting.
- 21:57Sex, spelled CXZ goes hard. Unsurprising.
- 22:04Deftones are frequently cited as being a very.
- 22:06Romantic and sexual. Inspiring band and I'll just say
- 22:11in concert. Eggs going to be dropping.
- 22:13If they play this one I think. About you all the time.
- 22:15It's very chill. It's got some white pony vibes
- 22:18not too far from. Changing the House of Flies.
- 22:22And digital bath, even without the beat.
- 22:25Nook of the Madonna we know. Second single, a super banger
- 22:29with a wonderful vocal hook. Cut hands as again.
- 22:32Got that? Early Deftones New metal.
- 22:35Sound just a bit. Just enough, not a. 100% turn
- 22:39into. It but just enough of an
- 22:41aggression I like and again very great and unique vocals by.
- 22:45Chino metal dreams of. Big ass rocker could be another
- 22:49single you know, you know, I think the was a in surprise.
- 22:56Today that they put another song out.
- 22:58But maybe Metal Dream will be. Another big, single, tremendous
- 23:02baseline. And that's where some of that
- 23:04rapping is. And then it closes.
- 23:07With maybe the most. Unique song the Deftones have
- 23:09done in about 10 years. It's like.
- 23:11So. Original and different for them
- 23:13to me. Departing the body.
- 23:15Absolute Moody, incredible range.
- 23:18Displayed by Moreno Vocali. And just, you know what a great
- 23:24way to close the record? Because I think.
- 23:27You know bands don't know. They have a.
- 23:28Couple of good tracks, but they don't.
- 23:30Really know how to finish off any.
- 23:32You know, records sometimes. I think that's a frequent
- 23:34problem with bands. What's your favorite song on
- 23:38this? Record do.
- 23:39Drop a comment and. Let us know.
- 23:40Whether during this live stream or after and you know, I mean, I
- 23:46think for 10. Albums in 30 years and a couple
- 23:50of live records and bootlegs and covers records and stuff.
- 23:53B Size and rarities. Very few bands are this
- 23:57consistent. I don't think the death tones
- 23:59have a bad. Record they obviously don't
- 24:01like. Saturday night risk because they
- 24:02did not like making it with. Bob Ezrin.
- 24:04They don't, you know. That's a very bad time for them.
- 24:08In the world, they probably will never put out Eros.
- 24:12As that as long as they're making new music as a band and
- 24:15they're active, I don't think this is.
- 24:17A farewell album I. Think this is the beginning of a
- 24:19new era and I think the next record will come.
- 24:22Faster and sooner because I think the.
- 24:24Outlets and side projects. Of Deftones help Deftones.
- 24:27They don't make it. Harder to be Deftones, so I.
- 24:30Think they're going to? Continue to do more.
- 24:32Music and probably have. Another record in three, three
- 24:35years or so, but I'm. I love private music.
- 24:38This is going to be one of my top albums.
- 24:39Of the year so far, our review at Ghost Cult gave it an 8.
- 24:43I would all, I would go higher and give it a nine if and I'm
- 24:46sure again, if you're just a Deftones stand, you're going to.
- 24:49Absolutely love this record because it's got.
- 24:52It's kind of like the greatest hits of Deftones classic.
- 24:54Sounds across their whole career, but I'm going to.
- 24:57Read this final quote from Majin Brutomesso's Deftones.
- 25:01Review, which is overall private music, showcases Deftones
- 25:05versatility and growth in experimenting with noisier
- 25:08shoegaze. Instrumentation while
- 25:10incorporating. The mix of dark.
- 25:12Grassy and sultry elements. We all know and love basically
- 25:15what I said better summed up because she is much more
- 25:19articulate than that. So yeah, let's talk.
- 25:23A. Couple of things going on with
- 25:26Deftones. They're.
- 25:29Picking off a new headline tour tonight in British Columbia and
- 25:31Vancouver. I saw them this.
- 25:33Spring, they were fucking. Flawless.
- 25:34Almost the best I've ever seen them.
- 25:36Their stage show is absolutely stellar if you.
- 25:39Have not seen them in a long time.
- 25:41You definitely want to go. Fred Rum is here.
- 25:43What's? Up Fred Rum.
- 25:45And. Let's see what else they're
- 25:48going to be playing. The big Danny Wimmer festivals,
- 25:54and they're kicking off this. Tour with the Barbarians of.
- 25:57California, and they're playing. The UK and Europe this winter I
- 26:03anticipate there will be another U.S. tour.
- 26:06Next spring or summer there will be European festivals.
- 26:08Next summer they already played some.
- 26:11I can absolutely see that happening.
- 26:12And of course, they are playing the Danny Wimmer.
- 26:14Festival. Louder than life.
- 26:16And Aftershock we are expecting to cover both of those, so I'm
- 26:19really looking forward to seeing Deftones.
- 26:21Headline. I believe it's day two of the
- 26:24festival on. Friday and yeah.
- 26:27Just super stoked for. Deftones.
- 26:29Really excited for private music.
- 26:32Absolutely one of my so far one of my top albums of the year.
- 26:35Not sure where it'll be in the end.
- 26:38Probably in the top five looking at the albums that have come.
- 26:40Out this year so far. And yeah.
- 26:43That's it for now. We'll be back.
