- 0:00All right. Um, I'll uh first start just
- 0:04addressing Tuesday night just to get it
- 0:07out of the way. Um, gonna keep it short.
- 0:09Um, because if you haven't noticed,
- 0:11Arkansas is really good. Um, and we've,
- 0:14you know, obviously got to turn the page
- 0:15to beat a really good try and beat a
- 0:16really good team. Uh, our administration
- 0:18and myself had extensive conversations.
- 0:21The SEC has reiterated to my
- 0:23administration that the three referees
- 0:25and the replay official in Birmingham
- 0:27had indisputable video evidence to
- 0:28overturn the call on the floor. We see
- 0:32it differently. Uh our feeling is that
- 0:34based on all the video and still shots
- 0:36that we were shown and reviewed that
- 0:38there was not disput indisputable
- 0:40evidence to reverse the call made on the
- 0:41floor that the basket was good. But
- 0:44again, while we would love to have that
- 0:46game in the win column, we've turned our
- 0:48focus on to obviously a very good
- 0:50Arkansas team. So, we'll just kind of
- 0:53leave it at that. Um, you know, and just
- 0:55kind of turn the page to Arkansas. Um,
- 0:58you know, Arkansas is obviously a damn
- 1:00good team. Um, and, um, you know, Coach
- 1:03K's done a great job putting this group
- 1:05together. They got eight just really,
- 1:07really good pieces that just do a lot of
- 1:09really, really good things. um you know
- 1:11off to a two and0 start in conference
- 1:13play so far you know beat Louisville and
- 1:16Texas Tech um in the non-conference um
- 1:19have a really prolific offensive attack
- 1:22um and uh you know they they're shooting
- 1:25it at a high rate you know I think
- 1:26they're shooting 40% from three so far
- 1:28this year um so um and have one of the
- 1:32best point guards in college basketball
- 1:34you know in Auff not just freshman point
- 1:36guards but just point guards in general
- 1:38so um you know present a lot of
- 1:42challenges um and it's really going to
- 1:43challenge our on the ball defense which
- 1:45is something that we struggled with. So
- 1:47you know we uh thought we made some
- 1:49progress in the last game defensively um
- 1:51you know guarding our yard um you know I
- 1:54think in the half court I think&m was
- 1:56like at one point per possession or 1.1
- 1:58points per possession in transition it
- 2:00was like 1.8
- 2:01and um you know they're really really
- 2:04good in transition so it's going to be
- 2:05really important for us to you know try
- 2:08and stop their transition attack because
- 2:09it's something they're elite at. Um and
- 2:11then you know obviously you know kind of
- 2:13limiting our turnovers is going to be
- 2:14important as well. Um you know in order
- 2:17for us to beat a really good team. So
- 2:19with that I'll take any questions.
- 2:23Stephen, I guess not to lament on on
- 2:26that call a little bit, but is is that
- 2:27they just said there's evidence. Did
- 2:29they present what they see as
- 2:32indisputable evidence or they're just I
- 2:34mean, did they say here's the still shot
- 2:36we see as indisputable evidence and this
- 2:38is what we went off of or they're just
- 2:39saying they have it and you just have to
- 2:41believe they have an angle different
- 2:42from yours or
- 2:44>> Yeah, they they've been in communication
- 2:46with with my administrators. um you know
- 2:50there I haven't they haven't called me
- 2:52or text me so I'm not really sure um but
- 2:56based on everything that we have seen
- 2:58you know that's just that's kind of our
- 3:00stance um so
- 3:03yeah I mean I can't really I'm not going
- 3:05to comment on what what's been shared
- 3:07from the league office and what's not
- 3:08been shared as far as you know video or
- 3:10still shots or things like that just you
- 3:12know all I can say is based on
- 3:14everything that we've seen we we didn't
- 3:16feel like there was enough to overturn
- 3:18what was called on the floor. And I I
- 3:21I'll take it a little bit a step
- 3:22further. If they had said on the floor
- 3:24that the shot was not good, I would have
- 3:27been sitting here saying the same thing
- 3:30because I I just don't I based on what
- 3:33we saw like it was blurry and I didn't
- 3:35think there was enough to turn overturn
- 3:37it in either direction. Um just based on
- 3:39what we saw. So
- 3:47>> yeah, he uh went and saw, you know, doc
- 3:49and got some imaging done on on that
- 3:52knee and structurally everything looks
- 3:53good. Um you know, Philip was on
- 3:55crutches yesterday, he's off crutches
- 3:57today. He'll go through stretches, he'll
- 3:59get shots up and it's more about pain
- 4:00tolerance at this point to kind of see
- 4:02where he's at. Um, but you know, I know
- 4:04Philip's gonna do everything he can to
- 4:06try and be available for Saturday, but
- 4:08as of right now, you know, he's just
- 4:09going to go probably half speed today,
- 4:11you know, through practice.
- 4:29Um, yeah. I mean, I don't think, you
- 4:32know, their their size isn't the issue.
- 4:36It's more their their quickness and
- 4:37their ability to get downhill. So, that
- 4:39that's not my primary concern. Um, you
- 4:43know, while they have bigs that are very
- 4:46versatile and do a lot of great things,
- 4:48they got, you know, Brazil can really
- 4:50shoot the ball now. You know, shooting
- 4:52at 40%, Malik Euan is a a handful down
- 4:54there. And, you know, we saw how
- 4:57effective Nick Pringle was last year at
- 4:59South Carolina. You know, he, you know,
- 5:02that was probably the only one of the
- 5:03only times all year that our fours and
- 5:05fives kind of got manhandled. Um, and he
- 5:07was a big reason for that, you know,
- 5:09happening. So he uh they present some
- 5:12challenges, but you know um I think you
- 5:16know we've obviously gone against three
- 5:17of the biggest teams in college
- 5:19basketball. So it's not going to be
- 5:20something where guys are going to be you
- 5:21know um surprised at seeing with how how
- 5:24good they are, you know. So um we just
- 5:27it's for me it's more about guarding our
- 5:29yard and keeping our man in front um
- 5:31than it is anything.
- 5:37You were saying like in half court the
- 5:40the defense you felt like I approved
- 5:41like what what kind of stood out to you
- 5:42all about that? Obviously the turnovers
- 5:44led to those, you know, open shots that
- 5:45they got in the second half, but did you
- 5:47feel like you guys did make some strides
- 5:48when you got to take care of the ball on
- 5:50defense?
- 5:51>> Yeah. Um, I thought, you know, in the
- 5:53half court, you know, um, we did a good
- 5:56job of sitting down and guarding and,
- 5:58you know, they they made some really
- 5:59tough shots in the half court late in
- 6:01that game, but I thought for the most
- 6:02part, you know, uh, we did a lot of good
- 6:05things as far as, you know, there there
- 6:06was, you know, a couple instances where,
- 6:09you know, they got downhill on us, but,
- 6:10you know, in their ball screens, like I
- 6:12think there was 35 ball screens in in
- 6:15that game and, you know, we were able to
- 6:18execute the coverage that we wanted to,
- 6:19I think, 25 times. In the 25 times we
- 6:22executed they scored four points. In the
- 6:25six or seven where we didn't, they
- 6:26scored 13. So every time we executed a
- 6:28ball screen coverage, they, you know,
- 6:30they they didn't get a lot of great
- 6:31looks. Um, and you know, um, I thought
- 6:35our one-on-one defense was better. A
- 6:38couple times they were able to get
- 6:39downhill to their right, but not nearly
- 6:40as much as they did in the Georgia game.
- 6:42So that's growth, that's improvement,
- 6:44that's paying attention to the scouting
- 6:46report. Um, but you know, ultimately
- 6:48like the difference in the game was, you
- 6:50know,
- 6:50a couple turnovers, you know, in
- 6:53transition. You know, I thought, um,
- 6:56when we, you know, there was 34
- 6:59possessions of us going against their
- 7:01pressure. Um, in 29 of those
- 7:04possessions, we did what we practiced
- 7:07and we broke it successfully 28 27
- 7:09times. We scored 28 points off those 29
- 7:12possessions. There was two non-shooting
- 7:14fouls and two turnovers. And one of the
- 7:16turnovers led to a big three. Um, but
- 7:20have 29 possessions to break it 27
- 7:22times. Like, you know, that that's
- 7:23really positive. The problem was when we
- 7:25kind of did our own thing on the other
- 7:27five possessions, uh, we only had one
- 7:29successful break that led to two points,
- 7:31but then we had four turnovers that led
- 7:32to 11 points. It's the difference in the
- 7:35ball game right there. So, um, there's
- 7:37not really a defensive game plan because
- 7:39here's the deal, like the way we break
- 7:41pressure, your two and your three man
- 7:43aren't involved in play. They're down
- 7:45the floor. So one, four, and five have
- 7:47to do a great job of, you know, breaking
- 7:48pressure. And for the most part, we did.
- 7:51The problem was the five times we
- 7:53didn't, they took full advantage of it.
- 7:55And that's a huge credit to them because
- 7:57they made three threes and and a layup
- 7:59off it. So they did a, you know, you got
- 8:02to give teams credit where credit's due.
- 8:04And when they turned us over, they took
- 8:06full advantage of it, which, you know,
- 8:08is a testament to, you know, what what
- 8:10that group has been able to do all year.
- 8:13I'm not sure if it was a focus in your
- 8:14conversations with the league, but I
- 8:16know you mentioned the free throw as
- 8:17well. You guys were kind of unsure about
- 8:18the time that came off on that free
- 8:20throw. Did you get any clarity on on
- 8:22that as well talking about Pop Isaac's
- 8:23free throw?
- 8:24>> Yeah, I tried not to focus on that, you
- 8:26know, because the the main the main
- 8:29thing was, you know, um the last play.
- 8:40What's the kind of the biggest challenge
- 8:41of facing this Arkansas team on offense?
- 8:43Obviously, they got Akuff, but I mean,
- 8:45plenty of guys on that that that team
- 8:47that are scoring
- 8:48>> for us defensively, you're saying?
- 8:50>> Yeah. I mean, they got, you know, you
- 8:52know, Akuff can get downhill and get his
- 8:54own. Malik Thomas is such a prolific
- 8:57shot maker and shot taker. You know,
- 8:59he's gonna I'm gonna tell the guys he's
- 9:01going to make some shots and you're
- 9:02like, "What the hell happened?" Like,
- 9:04you know, he just he's he's he's a such
- 9:06a special and unique shot maker. Um, so
- 9:10he's going to make some and you just
- 9:11can't like you got to get on the next
- 9:12play. Um, Brazil has just completely,
- 9:16you know, evolved his game and, you
- 9:17know, he's a he's a pick and pop four or
- 9:19five man now and shoots at a at a really
- 9:22good percentage. Billy Richmond is a guy
- 9:23that can really get downhill and finish
- 9:25around the rim and, you know, he's four
- 9:26for eight in his last five games from
- 9:28three. Um, you know, Carter Knox is a
- 9:30guy that's tremendously improved his
- 9:31three-point shooting. So they they they
- 9:34have a bunch of guys that have returned
- 9:36from a year ago that have all gotten
- 9:37better and then they got some really
- 9:39special freshman that just do so many
- 9:40good things. So um they're not
- 9:42onedimensional. Um you know they got
- 9:45guys that can shoot it, they got guys
- 9:46that can drive it. And while they don't
- 9:50analytically jump off the page from an
- 9:52offensive rebounding standpoint, they're
- 9:54a great offensive rebounding team. And
- 9:55the reason why analytically it doesn't
- 9:56look that way is because they're so damn
- 9:58efficient offensively. So they make a
- 9:59lot of shots, right? but when they miss
- 10:01shots, they do a great job of going and
- 10:02getting it. So, they're uh they're a
- 10:05handful and that's, you know, part of
- 10:06one of the reasons they're right now one
- 10:08of the favorites to win this league. Um,
- 10:10you know, so K's done a good job, great
- 10:13job with, you know, that staff uh with
- 10:14this group and, um, you know, it's going
- 10:17to be an unbelievable opportunity for us
- 10:18to go against another quality opponent.
- 10:25>> Just B, just keep the mic.
- 10:27>> Sorry, this is the last one. Uh you were
- 10:30saying the other night though about the
- 10:31fight all the way to the end. I mean for
- 10:33a team that has this many new guys.
- 10:35>> I mean how impressive have you been with
- 10:37the fact that they have been able to you
- 10:38know kind of hang in there because I
- 10:40know you've said throughout the year
- 10:41they've gone through a ton of adversity
- 10:43already and you know there's still 16
- 10:45games left to go in the regular season.
- 10:46How impressed have you been with that
- 10:48with with you know so many new guys and
- 10:50having to find new leaders?
- 10:51>> Yeah. Yeah. It's probably it's two
- 10:53parts. Like you're it's frustrating,
- 10:55right? Because we're putting we keep
- 10:57putting ourselves in these positions,
- 10:58right? Um you know, Houston, we missed
- 11:0212 free throws, lose by one. Um Georgia,
- 11:06we missed 12 free throws and we don't
- 11:08guard a soul, lose by four in overtime,
- 11:11right?
- 11:12um turn the ball over four times
- 11:17or we're up 16,
- 11:19lose by two right on the last second. Um
- 11:24so it's frustrating. Not surprising
- 11:26though with 10 new guys. That's part of
- 11:29that's part of a complete roster rebuild
- 11:31and a turnover is that sometimes it's
- 11:32going to happen.
- 11:34What I'll also look back and draw on
- 11:36though is we've won five close games
- 11:38this year, right? We beat Bthoon Cookman
- 11:40in overtime. Oregon was a really close
- 11:43game until the last probably two minutes
- 11:44and we were able to kind of extend it a
- 11:45little bit. St. John's, we were down
- 11:47nine at halftime. We're able to kind of
- 11:49blow that one, you know, open to in the
- 11:51last two minutes. NC State was a close
- 11:53game the entire game and to an extent.
- 11:55Chattanooga was, you know, a two or
- 11:56three possession game with a couple
- 11:58minutes left. So, we've won close games.
- 12:00So, you know, we're capable of obviously
- 12:01of finishing games, which is which is
- 12:03positive. Uh, but now to finally answer
- 12:05your question, yeah, I mean, it's it's
- 12:09It's really impressive um to be down
- 12:12four with.7 seconds left. And key,
- 12:15you're going to make two free throws and
- 12:17then you're going to miss this one on
- 12:18purpose. If you miss it left, KO, go run
- 12:20and get it. If he misses it short, I
- 12:24think it was Sebastian and Phillip.
- 12:27Maybe go get it off the front of the rim
- 12:29and just tap it in to execute that. Send
- 12:31it to overtime. Like that's that's
- 12:33incredibly impressive on a road
- 12:34environment against top 25 team.
- 12:37We weren't down 12 with five. We were
- 12:39down 12 with like three minutes left
- 12:40because they it had gotten up to 12 with
- 12:42like five, but when it was three and a
- 12:43half, I think we were still down 12. To
- 12:46be down 12 and, you know, to We haven't
- 12:50practiced running and jumping all year.
- 12:52And we ran we did run and jump like
- 12:54three times and they turned over two or
- 12:56three times and able to cut it to two
- 13:00and um obviously have a shot to to win
- 13:03the gamevious, you know. Umvious
- 13:05obviously shows that, you know, there's
- 13:08not any quit in this group. They still
- 13:10believe um in each other, in the staff,
- 13:13and you know, it's just like there's so
- 13:15much to play for. This league is this
- 13:18league is awesome because every night
- 13:20you have an opportunity to change your
- 13:22resume, you know, for the better.
- 13:24There's really not any opportunities to
- 13:26change it for the worse. Um, you know,
- 13:28and you just got to look back at if you
- 13:30look at half the Sweet 16 last year, you
- 13:33know, Purdue started the year four and
- 13:34five. Arkansas started the year 11 and
- 13:37seven, 0 and five in SEC play. Purdue
- 13:39was eight and four after we beat them um
- 13:42in uh in Birmingham. BYU was 11 and six,
- 13:45two and four in the league in all four
- 13:47made the sweet 16. So, it's like guys,
- 13:50it's a long season, right? Um, we've had
- 13:53we've had some bad luck. Some things go
- 13:55go go not go our way, but like how are
- 13:57we going to respond? Um, you know, it's
- 13:59not productive to live in the past. You
- 14:00know, we got to live in today and we got
- 14:02to have a great practice today to get
- 14:03ready for a really good Arkansas club.
- 14:30Yeah. I mean, I'm going to read off some
- 14:32of those stats I just gave you guys as
- 14:34far as like, you know, examples of teams
- 14:37that, you know, have gotten off to, you
- 14:40know, good starts, not great, right?
- 14:42And, um, how they've been able to bounce
- 14:43back. I mean, you know, our Final Four
- 14:45team was 13 and six. and four in SEC
- 14:47play uh six games in
- 14:51finished 30 and 10. That team, you know,
- 14:55had its warts, had it had its issues
- 14:57like you were around it, right? Found a
- 14:59way to just figure things out, figure
- 15:02out our roles and, you know, we had a
- 15:03great year. Those four teams I just
- 15:05mentioned, like, you know, not great
- 15:06starts, like figured it out. You know,
- 15:09um, you know, the past is entirely
- 15:10contained in your head,
- 15:13right? Um, you know, it's it's nowhere
- 15:17else. And, you know, for us, like the
- 15:19present is all that can exist. And, uh,
- 15:21you know, we just gota that's got to be
- 15:23the messaging. We got to come out and
- 15:24have a an awesome practice today. Um,
- 15:26and that's really all you can control
- 15:28because you know, the good thing about
- 15:31our non-conference is we uh, you know,
- 15:33we kind of put them through a gauntlet
- 15:34in November, December, too. So, they're
- 15:37they're used to it. But, I know at some
- 15:39point they'd like to see some, you know,
- 15:41some wins as we all do. But for us as as
- 15:44coaches, you know, we're just going to
- 15:45stay consistent and just keep plugging
- 15:47away and keep chopping and, you know,
- 15:49keep finding way because this team,
- 15:50listen, while we're owing to an SC play,
- 15:52we've gotten better over the last three
- 15:53weeks. Like, I I truly believe that and
- 15:55that's that's all you can really ask for
- 15:57at this point. Um, couple really tough
- 16:00results, but as long as we continue to
- 16:02get better as as a unit, you like we
- 16:04have been, you know, the wins will come.
- 16:08>> Thanks,
