- 0:54Speaker 2: the hour, I'm going to replay an interview I did
- 0:57Speaker 2: back in September with author John Bacon. His book is
- 1:00Speaker 2: called Gales of November. It's on the wreck of the
- 1:03Speaker 2: Edmund Fitzgerald. Why am I doing that today? Fifty years
- 1:08Speaker 2: ago today, approximately seven pm, twenty nine souls were lost
- 1:14Speaker 2: when the Edmund Fitzgerald went down. We will play that
- 1:17Speaker 2: interview phone the neighbors, wake the kids, and in the
- 1:22Speaker 2: second hour, Rusty and Caesar here for the writer's roundtable.
- 1:27Speaker 1: We have topics for you.
- 1:29Speaker 2: So we got all of that going on for us,
- 1:31Speaker 2: which is nice, and we're going to give away a
- 1:33Speaker 2: prize coming up here in less than fifteen minutes to
- 1:36Speaker 2: our week eleven. Friday's Fearless winner, Mike Elko took great

- 3:51Speaker 2: weeks to potentially adopt a twenty year, two point four
- 3:55Speaker 2: billion dollar deal with a California pension fund and extend
- 3:59Speaker 2: the difference granted rights in additional ten years. The move
- 4:03Speaker 2: for a vote, supported encouraged by many university administrators, threatens
- 4:08Speaker 2: to drive a wedge between the teams and especially Michigan
- 4:14Speaker 2: and USC. Several university administrators, board members, and executive spoke

- 16:21Speaker 11: foundation here in, town and so just a great cause
- 16:24Speaker 11: and a great opportunity to be An Aggie On. Saturday
- 16:27Speaker 11: as we look back to recap The missouri, GAME i
- 16:30Speaker 11: always start with our players of the week Our scout
- 16:33Speaker 11: team players of the week offensively was Ty. Thomas on.
- 16:36Speaker 11: Defense we went With Aiden herrera and on special Teams
- 16:39Speaker 11: Tristan jernigan for the. Game lineman of The week Offensively
- 16:44Speaker 11: Demetrius crownover And Trey. ZOON i thought the challenge of
- 16:47Speaker 11: handling the outside edges was a big piece of that,
- 16:51Speaker 11: game and for the most part we were able to
- 16:54Speaker 11: kind of contain those two, kids AND i think that
- 16:57Speaker 11: played a huge role in our. Success and then obviously
- 17:00Speaker 11: The trey having to flip in and play center and
- 17:03Speaker 11: do a really good, job and it was awesome to
- 17:05Speaker 11: See Duce slathery pop in ready to roll and play
- 17:08Speaker 11: a big role at tackle for. Us, defensively again it
- 17:11Speaker 11: Was tyler On yetam five, tackles two, TFLs did a
- 17:15Speaker 11: really really good job in the middle of the run
- 17:17Speaker 11: defense and made a couple of plays that got them
- 17:20Speaker 11: off scheduled and help us get off the. Field players
- 17:23Speaker 11: of the Week, Offensively Casey conception obviously the touchdown on
- 17:27Speaker 11: the screen was such a huge play and again just
- 17:31Speaker 11: continues to be very electric with the football in his. Hands,
- 17:34Speaker 11: defensively want to give a shout out To Casius, howell
- 17:37Speaker 11: who was THE Sec Defensive lineman of the. Week Damian
- 17:41Speaker 11: sandford was the CO Sec Defensive player of the. Week
- 17:45Speaker 11: but internally we actually went With Tyreek chappelle as our
- 17:48Speaker 11: player of the week for the job he did on
- 17:50Speaker 11: their slot living And Kevin coleman basically did to one
- 17:54Speaker 11: catch for one yard on a jet, sweep and SO
- 17:57Speaker 11: i thought that Was tyreek's best game of the. Year
- 17:59Speaker 11: and then special, teams there was a lot of debate
- 18:02Speaker 11: on who the special teams player of the week. Was
- 18:05Speaker 11: some Thought Dalton, brooks some Thought Albert, regis depending on
- 18:09Speaker 11: who you believe on the on field fight that went
- 18:12Speaker 11: on about whether to keep the fake on or call it.
- 18:14Speaker 11: Off and So i'll let you guys decide who gets that.
- 18:18Speaker 11: One and so now we turn our attention moving forward
- 18:21Speaker 11: to a really CHALLENGING Uh South carolina. Team obviously a
- 18:25Speaker 11: team coming in who has played one of the most
- 18:28Speaker 11: challenging schedules in the country when you look at, it
- 18:31Speaker 11: this will be their fifth straight game against a team
- 18:33Speaker 11: ranked in the top twelve or. HIGHER i can't imagine
- 18:36Speaker 11: that that has happened very often throughout the history of college.
- 18:40Speaker 11: FOOTBALL i don't know what they did to the scheduling
- 18:42Speaker 11: gods to get the schedule that they've. Gotten, so in my,
- 18:45Speaker 11: opinion a team that is extremely, talented much better than
- 18:49Speaker 11: their record would indicate coming off of a bye, week
- 18:52Speaker 11: obviously with a lot of confidence based on what they
- 18:54Speaker 11: did to us last, year and so we're gonna have
- 18:57Speaker 11: a tremendous challenge On saturday and to come out and
- 19:00Speaker 11: play our best football to have a chance to. Win
- 19:02Speaker 11: and so it's kind of where we're. At so from,
- 19:04Speaker 11: there we'll open it up to.
- 19:05Speaker 18: Questions coach to the right through road Daven.
- 19:08Speaker 3: Coach, oko given how much you all have prioritized finishing,
- 19:11Speaker 3: games finishing the, season what is it about this team
- 19:13Speaker 3: that allows.
- 19:14Speaker 18: Them consistently to play their best at the end of?
- 19:16Speaker 11: Games, YEAH i, mean, OBVIOUSLY i think it starts with
- 19:21Speaker 11: the work that we do with Coach moffatt and the strength.
- 19:23Speaker 11: Staff you, know it's hard to say that that's not
- 19:25Speaker 11: a big piece of. IT i think they have a
- 19:29Speaker 11: maturity about them that understands the need to elevate their
- 19:32Speaker 11: level in the fourth. QUARTER i think that plays a.
- 19:35Speaker 11: Role and THEN i, think you, know when you have
- 19:37Speaker 11: an experienced veteran group to some, degree you would hope
- 19:41Speaker 11: that that would be the case because they've been through it,
- 19:44Speaker 11: enough they understand what it takes to elevate their game
- 19:47Speaker 11: at the. End, Uh and SO i think that probably
- 19:50Speaker 11: plays a role in it as.
- 19:51Speaker 18: Well stay to the right second, Route roland And.
- 19:56Speaker 22: Mike first of, all if it's not state, secret can
- 20:01Speaker 22: you give us an idea how that all did go
- 20:03Speaker 22: down to make that? Call is it something that Y'ALL
- 20:07Speaker 22: i have to, MEAN i didn't know it Was missouri
- 20:09Speaker 22: lining up like that the whole, game or you, know
- 20:11Speaker 22: how did that all? Unfold?
- 20:13Speaker 11: YEAH i think with most most things like, that you,
- 20:17Speaker 11: know there's always a mechanic to check it off if
- 20:19Speaker 11: you don't feel good about your ability to hit. It
- 20:23Speaker 11: that's something we talk a lot about with the kids
- 20:25Speaker 11: each week About, okay, hey those are the things that
- 20:27Speaker 11: maybe indicate this might not work the way we hoped it.
- 20:29Speaker 11: WOULD i think there was a little bit of an
- 20:32Speaker 11: on field debate about whether they had one of those
- 20:34Speaker 11: looks or, didn't and ultimately they decided to keep it
- 20:37Speaker 11: on and it worked.
- 20:38Speaker 22: Okay and then last, year you know you told us
- 20:43Speaker 22: About lenora's sellers and getting your guys to understand the
- 20:47Speaker 22: challenge that he. Presented is the challenge the? SAME i,
- 20:50Speaker 22: mean if they're not having he's not having as much,
- 20:53Speaker 22: success and they're not having as much success, offensively when
- 20:57Speaker 22: you when you when you look at the film of
- 21:00Speaker 22: and things like, that what do you see?
- 21:02Speaker 11: DIFFERENT i see the same, big, physical athletic kid that
- 21:07Speaker 11: ran all over us and threw all over us last.
- 21:10Speaker 11: Year SO i see the same, kid and so our
- 21:12Speaker 11: kids better see the same kid because he absolutely lit
- 21:16Speaker 11: us up last. Year and so if we want to
- 21:19Speaker 11: have any level of success On, saturday we will do
- 21:22Speaker 11: a much better job of understanding what the challenge actually
- 21:25Speaker 11: is this.
- 21:25Speaker 23: Year to the, Left alex's just what's the update On Scooby,
- 21:31Speaker 23: Williams just how he's doing.
- 21:32Speaker 11: Good getting better every week and we'll kind of see
- 21:35Speaker 11: how this week.
- 21:35Speaker 23: Goes, Gotcha and you know you mentioned how y'all had
- 21:38Speaker 23: to pivot on the offensive. Line just what maybe impressed
- 21:41Speaker 23: you the most that that unit was able to do
- 21:44Speaker 23: what they. Did y'all stuck with that kind of, look
- 21:46Speaker 23: seems like most of the.
- 21:47Speaker 11: Game, yeah obviously ourmaj was out in the second. Half
- 21:51Speaker 11: AND i think that's one of the reasons why we
- 21:54Speaker 11: play the way we. DO i think everyone always asks
- 21:56Speaker 11: questions about like the old, line like why do you
- 21:59Speaker 11: why do you if guys, around why do you? Rotate
- 22:01Speaker 11: are you serious About Trey zoon playing? Center and you,
- 22:05Speaker 11: know we do those things because at some point in a,
- 22:08Speaker 11: game something's gonna happen and you're gonna need the group
- 22:12Speaker 11: to go out and play a certain way to go
- 22:14Speaker 11: win a football. Game and when you're at this stage
- 22:17Speaker 11: we're at where there's so much meaning behind each, game
- 22:22Speaker 11: you imagine if we hadn't played trade at center at,
- 22:25Speaker 11: all or we couldn't put that lineup out there, together
- 22:28Speaker 11: or whatever the case may. Be and SO i just
- 22:30Speaker 11: think that's how we think about these things from a
- 22:33Speaker 11: big picture standpoint from day, one and so to, us
- 22:37Speaker 11: it's really important that you have enough continuity on that
- 22:40Speaker 11: line and enough guys ready to go that it's not
- 22:44Speaker 11: one injury that would rock your. World and so you,
- 22:47Speaker 11: know it's you, Know homage got dinged. Up he couldn't
- 22:50Speaker 11: go anymore to try to give us everything he, had
- 22:52Speaker 11: but he couldn't keep, going and so you, know we
- 22:54Speaker 11: went with the. Group that was what we felt like
- 22:57Speaker 11: gave us the best chance to win the rest of.
- 22:58Speaker 23: The, way all the way in the, Back, donna, coach
- 23:02Speaker 23: do you have an update On?
- 23:03Speaker 18: Homage, yeah he's, fine. Okay and then, also.
- 23:05Speaker 23: How have you been able to keep outside noise outside your?
- 23:08Speaker 18: Building?
- 23:09Speaker 11: Yeah, AGAIN i just think last year was such a
- 23:12Speaker 11: learning lesson for, us you, know And i've referenceded a,
- 23:15Speaker 11: bunch but like you, know nobody appreciated obviously because like,
- 23:21Speaker 11: me everyone was so disappointed with how the year. Ended
- 23:23Speaker 11: BUT i don't think anyone appreciated the challenge that was
- 23:27Speaker 11: being in that position really for the first time and
- 23:29Speaker 11: for those kids ever for the, program we hadn't been
- 23:32Speaker 11: in that position very much, either and so we think
- 23:36Speaker 11: we just learned a. LOT i think we learned a
- 23:37Speaker 11: lot about what would come with, it how to handle it,
- 23:39Speaker 11: all what it all really meant at the end of the.
- 23:42Speaker 11: Day and you, know again we've handled it the right
- 23:45Speaker 11: way for nine. Games there's still three more that we've
- 23:48Speaker 11: got to handle one at a, time and so let's Start.
- 23:50Speaker 18: Saturday, Coach we'll go right next to, Him, tyler or
- 23:53Speaker 18: right next to, Her, Sorry, Tyler.
- 23:56Speaker 10: Mike does it feel like forever since you've been at?
- 23:58Speaker 21: Home and then just how excited is it to have
- 24:00Speaker 21: this kind of momentum coming back To Kyle field this?
- 24:03Speaker 18: Week, yeah it's.
- 24:05Speaker 11: FUNNY i stood on the podium after The florida game
- 24:07Speaker 11: AND i, said you, know we're gonna go on the
- 24:09Speaker 11: road for about five, weeks and hopefully when we returned
- 24:11Speaker 11: To Kyle, field we'll return with a lot on the.
- 24:13Speaker 11: Line and certainly there's a lot on the Line, Saturday
- 24:16Speaker 11: and so certainly would anticipate the Twelfth man showing up really.
- 24:20Speaker 11: Well they always, do BUT i would imagine for this
- 24:22Speaker 11: one they'll show up even. Better And, yeah it's a
- 24:25Speaker 11: great opportunity for us to get back home and play a,
- 24:29Speaker 11: really really big game against a really talented football.
- 24:31Speaker 18: Team we're going to go to the left third, Row, Matthew.
- 24:34Speaker 5: Coach how telling is it of this team's character to
- 24:37Speaker 5: go and defeated on a three game sec road.
- 24:40Speaker 18: Stretch, YEAH i think it's.
- 24:41Speaker 11: HUGE i THINK i don't know anyone honestly looking in
- 24:45Speaker 11: the eye and tell me you thought we would do
- 24:46Speaker 11: that at the beginning of the, Year and, again not
- 24:49Speaker 11: in any bad. Way i'm not sure THAT i would
- 24:51Speaker 11: have looked in the mirror and SAID i thought we. Could.
- 24:52Speaker 11: Either you know those things you have to you have
- 24:55Speaker 11: to learn how to do those, things and this program
- 24:57Speaker 11: hasn't really done that, recently and SO i think it's
- 25:00Speaker 11: a testament to the. KIDS i think, AGAIN i think
- 25:03Speaker 11: they formed a lot of confidence when we went in
- 25:04Speaker 11: The south mand and got that one, done AND i
- 25:07Speaker 11: think they believe in what they're capable. Of but for
- 25:10Speaker 11: them to still go out there and do it three straight,
- 25:13Speaker 11: weeks it's extremely.
- 25:14Speaker 18: Impressive prompt, road, Right, Travis.
- 25:18Speaker 5: Yeah with the sack this, Weekend cassius only HAS i
- 25:22Speaker 5: Believed Mantrey moore And Miles garrett in THE sec or
- 25:24Speaker 5: as more single season. Sacks as a defensive, coach how do
- 25:28Speaker 5: you how do you appreciate the kind of season that
- 25:31Speaker 5: he's had and do you kind of root for him
- 25:33Speaker 5: maybe to get hit one of Those Miles garrett seasons
- 25:36Speaker 5: or something like.
- 25:36Speaker 11: That, yeah for, SURE i think it'd be great for.
- 25:39Speaker 11: HIM i think it'd be great for our. PROGRAM i
- 25:41Speaker 11: don't know That miles would like, it but maybe some
- 25:43Speaker 11: part of him would enjoy the program having. Success, NO
- 25:47Speaker 11: i think he. Has he has, really you, know helped
- 25:51Speaker 11: himself a lot coming back this. Year you, know we
- 25:54Speaker 11: talked about how important it was to flip the narrative
- 25:56Speaker 11: in this program with those guys that were fringe guys
- 26:00Speaker 11: making a decision to come, back actually seeing them develop their,
- 26:04Speaker 11: bodies go out and have a significantly better. Season you
- 26:09Speaker 11: can't speak to how much that means to our program moving.
- 26:12Speaker 11: Forward and so because of all of, THAT i would
- 26:15Speaker 11: love it to end with him setting the single season sack,
- 26:19Speaker 11: record with him getting a ton of national, recognition and
- 26:22Speaker 11: him ultimately feeling like he made a really good decision
- 26:26Speaker 11: for himself and his family by being part of this.
- 26:28Speaker 18: Program one more, Year we'll go to the, back, Right.
- 26:31Speaker 2: CHIP i know you have plenty of offensive, playmakers but
- 26:35Speaker 2: after Seeing Dalton brooks with the ball a couple of,
- 26:37Speaker 2: times and he thought of getting him involved on that
- 26:39Speaker 2: side of the ball, Anymore.
- 26:41Speaker 11: NO i shoot neither, one or he should have scored
- 26:43Speaker 11: on both of, them BUT i told, him but, no so, No,
- 26:47Speaker 11: yeah he's a really talented. Kid he's a really athletic. Kid,
- 26:51Speaker 11: obviously that's that's a game that you dream of when
- 26:53Speaker 11: you're playing, safety to be able to account for seventy
- 26:57Speaker 11: eight total. Yards and there's obviously two, huge huge place
- 27:01Speaker 11: For rushmore at them.
- 27:02Speaker 2: Standpoint so he didn't really say he was gonna Add
- 27:06Speaker 2: Dalton brooks to his offensive, package did. He all, right
- 27:13Speaker 2: that's part of Coach. Elko if we have time later
- 27:16Speaker 2: in the, week we'll do. That i'm guessing we're going
- 27:20Speaker 2: to hear From Kirby smart at some. Point i'm not
- 27:24Speaker 2: guessing it's my. SHOW i can do, it but we'll

- 31:26Speaker 2: Feeding As Gordon lightfoot nineteen seventy, six the wreck of
- 31:36Speaker 2: The Edmund fitzgerald the, win and for most of us
- 31:41Speaker 2: that is the only way we know about The Edmund.
- 31:44Speaker 1: Fitzgerald it was fifty years.
- 31:47Speaker 2: Ago tonight that The Edmund fitzgerald went down with twenty
- 31:53Speaker 2: nine souls sing In Lake. Superior John bacon has written
- 31:59Speaker 2: a book on that Called The gails Of. November this
- 32:04Speaker 2: is the INTERVIEW i did with him Before the book
- 32:07Speaker 2: came out about six weeks.
- 32:09Speaker 1: Ago right now we're.
- 32:11Speaker 2: Going to jump out to the player's Fun center phone
- 32:14Speaker 2: line and visit with Author John. Bacon his, book out
- 32:18Speaker 2: next week is Called The gaels Of, November The Untold
- 32:22Speaker 2: story of The Edmund. Fitzgerald, JOHN i don't want to oversell,
- 32:27Speaker 2: this But i've told my listeners this is one of
- 32:29Speaker 2: the best Books i've ever.
- 32:30Speaker 19: Read, hey over sell, away chip go.
- 32:33Speaker 2: Nuts let's start with just the, culture the freight along
- 32:42Speaker 2: The Great, lakes and the culture that existed then and
- 32:47Speaker 2: does some extent still.
- 32:48Speaker 1: Exists that's.
- 32:50Speaker 19: Correct, Look i'm From Annibra. Miskin we spent our summers
- 32:54Speaker 19: On Lake. MISCHKAN i have swam in all these, lakes sailed,
- 32:57Speaker 19: them motor botered, them et. Cetera AND i didn't know.
- 33:00Speaker 19: Anything so it turns out the culture these things are the,
- 33:04Speaker 19: greatest the biggest lakes in the world. Combined they're bigger
- 33:08Speaker 19: than all Of New england plus the state Of New.
- 33:09Speaker 19: York people have no sense of just how gigantic these things.
- 33:12Speaker 19: Are you can't see across, them they're that. Big they're like.
- 33:15Speaker 19: Oceans so when you're on, there of, course The Great lake.
- 33:19Speaker 19: Shipping pretty much all your stuff comes from These Great lakes.
- 33:23Speaker 19: Freighters the cement in your, basement the steel in your,
- 33:26Speaker 19: car the cereal on your, table it's all from The
- 33:29Speaker 19: Great lakes and off from these. Ships so the culture
- 33:32Speaker 19: is an intense. One ONE i knew almost nothing.
- 33:34Speaker 20: About.
- 33:34Speaker 19: IS i, said they're about three hundred, freighters and back
- 33:37Speaker 19: in those, days who did this. Work now it's about
- 33:39Speaker 19: one hundred and there for about nine thousand guys you do.
- 33:42Speaker 19: It and they're on these ships nine months out of the.
- 33:45Speaker 19: Year SO i was, wondering as a friend of mine,
- 33:47Speaker 19: said we know the, farmer the factory, worker the, miner
- 33:51Speaker 19: but no one knows the. Sailor AND i, thought why is?
- 33:53Speaker 19: That because they're never. Home you couldn't meet.
- 33:55Speaker 1: Them this, ship The Edmund.
- 34:01Speaker 2: Fitzgerald is it fair to compare it to The titanic
- 34:05Speaker 2: in its day and that it was? Unsinkable it was
- 34:08Speaker 2: the best of the.
- 34:09Speaker 12: Best it is completely.
- 34:12Speaker 19: Fair and that's another thing THAT i didn't. Know shame
- 34:15Speaker 19: on me AS i, say, ship is that this ship
- 34:18Speaker 19: really was all. That and you, know we're both football.
- 34:20Speaker 19: Guys oftentimes you dig back into you know the four, Horsemen,
- 34:25Speaker 19: well you read about The Four. Horsemen he realized they
- 34:26Speaker 19: won that game thirteen to. Nine that's not an, apocalypse
- 34:29Speaker 19: that's a couple of. Fieldals so it's not always that.
- 34:33Speaker 19: Way in this, case the fifth really was all. That
- 34:36Speaker 19: it was the longest ship in The Great, lakes the,
- 34:39Speaker 19: widest could carry the most, cargo is one of the,
- 34:42Speaker 19: fastest and set all the records for cargo year, in year,
- 34:46Speaker 19: out again and again and. Again and it was also
- 34:49Speaker 19: the nicest and most. Famous it was vip, quarters the
- 34:52Speaker 19: best food in The Great, lakes the best, crew the best,
- 34:55Speaker 19: captain and when they're going past some of the inlets
- 34:58Speaker 19: like The Sioux locks or The Detroit, river or crowds
- 35:01Speaker 19: would wait for them a day in. Advance sheer the
- 35:03Speaker 19: ship on this ship really was all.
- 35:05Speaker 1: That tell our listeners what taconite.
- 35:08Speaker 19: Is, Ah i've got some in a little jar on
- 35:11Speaker 19: my desk right, now AND i didn't know that either.
- 35:14Speaker 19: Beforehand so. Taconite if you think about how fracking has
- 35:19Speaker 19: restored drilling In america for, petroleum all the easy wells
- 35:23Speaker 19: have been, Taken so what do you do have to
- 35:25Speaker 19: do fracking? Well After World War, two all the easy
- 35:28Speaker 19: iron ore had been taken out of Northern, minnesota Northern,
- 35:32Speaker 19: wisconsin and the Upper peninsula Of. Michigan and here's a
- 35:35Speaker 19: fun fact for. You those, miners by the, way lived
- 35:38Speaker 19: in caves in the. Winter their nicknames were the gophers
- 35:40Speaker 19: In minnesota and the badgers In. Wisconsin, well, fans those
- 35:45Speaker 19: mascots come from, miners not from, Animals so how about that.
- 35:48Speaker 19: One but, anyway so After World war, two professor up
- 35:52Speaker 19: there In minnesota figured out how to take this, refuse this,
- 35:55Speaker 19: taconite the throwaway, stuff and turn it into these pellets
- 36:00Speaker 19: hand good radio Hunh, yes but they're about marble. Sized
- 36:05Speaker 19: and they put about five hundred million of these, things
- 36:09Speaker 19: twenty six thousand tons on one of these. Ships and
- 36:12Speaker 19: these pebbles basically cocoa puffs is what they look. Like
- 36:16Speaker 19: they pile on the ship and they get them off
- 36:19Speaker 19: At Ford Motor company And dearborn right off the the Tread.
- 36:21Speaker 19: River they smelt. Them they melt them down right then and,
- 36:24Speaker 19: there and those things become a car by the end
- 36:27Speaker 19: of the. Day so and on one of these, ships
- 36:30Speaker 19: on The, fitzgerald they could hold enough attackonite to build
- 36:34Speaker 19: a seven thousand cars per cargo. Load and they did
- 36:37Speaker 19: this fifty times a. Year that's one. Ship so that's
- 36:40Speaker 19: where a car comes.
- 36:41Speaker 1: From fifty eight million? Pounds DID i get that?
- 36:45Speaker 19: RIGHT i know you can't believe, it but it's. True
- 36:48Speaker 19: it's the equivalent of four thousand adult elephants on one
- 36:51Speaker 19: ship every, trip which is once per.
- 36:54Speaker 1: Week and the laws and they were a little bit.
- 37:02Speaker 2: Loose maybe The Edmund fitzgerald probably put more taconite in
- 37:10Speaker 2: the holes of that ship than probably they should.
- 37:13Speaker 1: Have is that fair to?
- 37:14Speaker 19: Say that is more than fair to, Say, CHIP i
- 37:16Speaker 19: love your, show BUT i love it for, football of,
- 37:19Speaker 19: course my, man your listeners better know that you've done
- 37:23Speaker 19: your homework. Here you do your, homework well, done exactly.
- 37:26Speaker 19: Right something called the Plim cell line From Great britain
- 37:30Speaker 19: in the eighteen fifties and. Sixties the line painted on a,
- 37:33Speaker 19: ship but you're not allowed to have that go beneath
- 37:36Speaker 19: the water, line so you lower your ship. Up if
- 37:38Speaker 19: you go belong that, line insurance is not going to cover.
- 37:41Speaker 19: You but every one in The Great lakes cheating in that.
- 37:43Speaker 19: LINE i got a whole chapter called cheating the Plim cell. Line,
- 37:46Speaker 19: yeah how you hose down the deck to cool it,
- 37:50Speaker 19: down which raises the ship amazingly in the. Middle you
- 37:54Speaker 19: dump the potable, water there's stuff you're drinking to raise the,
- 37:57Speaker 19: ship all kinds of ways to cheat this. Thing and
- 38:00Speaker 19: then the government itself gave you out of nowhere three
- 38:04Speaker 19: and a half more feet of what's called, freeboard which
- 38:06Speaker 19: means you allowed to sink in the water three and
- 38:08Speaker 19: a half more feet in the early late, sixties thirty,
- 38:12Speaker 19: seventies right before this. Accident so a ship not built
- 38:15Speaker 19: for this is now taking on much more than it.
- 38:17Speaker 2: Should let's talk a little bit about the, Captain ernest.
- 38:22Speaker 2: McSorley how would describe him as you did in your?
- 38:25Speaker 19: Book sure he was the short. Answer he's the best
- 38:29Speaker 19: captain on The Great, lakes flat. Out and his competitors
- 38:32Speaker 19: told me. That his former crew told me that that
- 38:35Speaker 19: was his. Reputation the best in rough, weather the best
- 38:39Speaker 19: pilot on The Great, lakes they said he could. Do
- 38:42Speaker 19: these things are seven hundred and twenty nine feet. Long
- 38:45Speaker 19: think about that for a. Second that's a seventy three
- 38:46Speaker 19: story building on its. Side it's the biggest building the
- 38:49Speaker 19: state Of, michigan The Renaissance.
- 38:50Speaker 2: Center it's like two and a half football fields two
- 38:54Speaker 2: and a half.
- 38:54Speaker 19: Football fields and it's only seventy five feet, wide so
- 38:57Speaker 19: two and a football fields and not even as wide
- 39:01Speaker 19: as a baseball passed. Wide it's, crazy so it's it's
- 39:06Speaker 19: a crazy. Design but, anyway this guy with two ships
- 39:09Speaker 19: on either side of a gigantic doc that goes half a,
- 39:12Speaker 19: mile he could land that thing without bumping into either
- 39:15Speaker 19: ship five feet gap on either, side as one guy,
- 39:18Speaker 19: said as though he's parking his forward f one fifty
- 39:22Speaker 19: in the parking. Lot he was that. Good so he
- 39:25Speaker 19: was the best in the. Lakes also the most revered.
- 39:28Speaker 19: Captain his crew loved. Him he's a good, guy and
- 39:31Speaker 19: each time he was promoted to another, ship his crew
- 39:34Speaker 19: very happily came with.
- 39:35Speaker 2: Him all, Right so you you describe in great detail
- 39:41Speaker 2: the weather on The Great lakes and On, superior and
- 39:45Speaker 2: the day this ship left was a bluebird?
- 39:49Speaker 1: Day was it? Not seventy?
- 39:50Speaker 20: Degrees exactly?
- 39:52Speaker 19: Right and trust, me you're In, TEXAS i believe, Correct,
- 39:54Speaker 19: Yes so all, right seventy degrees In. Texas you know
- 39:57Speaker 19: you call that What November december degrees In, Duluth minnesota is.
- 40:02Speaker 19: Strange that is at the very top of The United.
- 40:06Speaker 19: States it's the western point Of Lake, superior which is
- 40:10Speaker 19: so cold no one swims in it ever year. Round
- 40:13Speaker 19: it's just too cold for. That so seventy degrees sounds.
- 40:16Speaker 19: Great but here's the bad. News the longer winter takes
- 40:20Speaker 19: to arrive in The Great, lakes the angrier it. Arrives
- 40:23Speaker 19: it's like a dam. Breaking so it's a beautiful day On,
- 40:26Speaker 19: sunday seventy, degrees it turns nasty. Fast there are two
- 40:30Speaker 19: storms coming in one The Alberta clipper From edmonton And
- 40:35Speaker 19: calgary Hockey town to the. Course that's bringing, cold dry
- 40:38Speaker 19: air across the. Plains that's not unusual this time of.
- 40:42Speaker 19: Year what is unusual from where you are the southwest
- 40:45Speaker 19: The United, states From california Across arizona To, Texas, Oklahoma.
- 40:50Speaker 19: IOWA a, hot wet storm equally. Strong and these two
- 40:55Speaker 19: storm systems are going to collide right Over Lake, superior in,
- 40:58Speaker 19: fact right in front of what's Called Whitefish, bay this
- 41:03Speaker 19: little pocket at the end of the eastern end Of.
- 41:05Speaker 19: Superior as the song, goes that's the ship is. Heading
- 41:09Speaker 19: and these two storms set up shop At catcher guarding home.
- 41:12Speaker 2: Plate and until the storms. ARRIVE i want people to
- 41:20Speaker 2: know that the weather and The National Weather, service and
- 41:24Speaker 2: all of these things they weren't quite what they are,
- 41:28Speaker 2: today were.
- 41:29Speaker 19: They your phone has more power than they had fifty years,
- 41:34Speaker 19: ago and part of that was, technology but part of
- 41:37Speaker 19: that was simply complacency on both The National Weather services
- 41:41Speaker 19: part as well as the captain's. Part so two things
- 41:43Speaker 19: have improved dramatically since. Then forecasting ability and communicating that
- 41:47Speaker 19: with the captains did not exist. Then so these captains
- 41:50Speaker 19: knew very little of this. Storm they knew The Alberta
- 41:53Speaker 19: clipper was coming, Down they did not know about the southwestern.
- 41:55Speaker 19: Storm only at the last minute they decided to go
- 41:58Speaker 19: the safe, way the, northern the longer, way hugging the
- 42:02Speaker 19: shore Of Lake superior Through, canada and that safety measure unfortunately.
- 42:08Speaker 19: Ship it's kind of. Tragic this captain is known for
- 42:11Speaker 19: going go go go pedals in the. Metal he never
- 42:14Speaker 19: turned around in. Storms he never sought. Shelter this time
- 42:17Speaker 19: he finally takes the safe, route which he doesn't know as.
- 42:20Speaker 19: WELL a few problems. There, one you just gave the
- 42:23Speaker 19: storm fourteen more hours to beat you To Whitefish, point
- 42:27Speaker 19: AS i said Home, plate so didn't. Know. That second
- 42:30Speaker 19: thing is now he's not trained water that he does
- 42:33Speaker 19: not know nearly as, well including this little speck of
- 42:36Speaker 19: an island Called Cariboo. Island it's one mile by three.
- 42:39Speaker 19: Miles it's in the middle of a lake that is
- 42:41Speaker 19: thirteen hundred feet, deep and in front of that island
- 42:44Speaker 19: is what's called six fathoms. SHOAL a fathom is six,
- 42:48Speaker 19: feet six fathoms is therefore thirty six. Feet but this
- 42:51Speaker 19: thing is only eleven feet deep in certain. Places that's
- 42:54Speaker 19: no deeper than your backyard pool at that. Point and
- 42:57Speaker 19: this thing already has twenty nine feet underwater on a good,
- 43:01Speaker 19: day and this is not a good. Day thirty forty
- 43:04Speaker 19: fifty foot, waves one hundred mile per hour winds that
- 43:07Speaker 19: knock over trailer parks and cars and so, on and
- 43:11Speaker 19: he's walking into all. That he ended up in the
- 43:13Speaker 19: exact wrong place at the exact wrong.
- 43:15Speaker 2: Time there had been a similar storm years, before, Correct
- 43:21Speaker 2: but this is one of those every fifty to one
- 43:25Speaker 2: hundred year kind of storms that he sailed into exactly.
- 43:30Speaker 19: Right Chip and, again my, man you're passing the quid
- 43:32Speaker 19: is left and right, y.
- 43:35Speaker 20: So cheap it.
- 43:35Speaker 19: Up when he we'll talk, football, well you'll show off.
- 43:38Speaker 19: There you're nailing this. Stuff The storm of The century
- 43:42Speaker 19: was nineteen thirteen on four of the five. Lakes twenty
- 43:46Speaker 19: ships were, lost around three hundred men on The Great lakes.
- 43:49Speaker 19: Miserable but that storm of the century did not last
- 43:52Speaker 19: from the century only sixty two more. Years this storm
- 43:56Speaker 19: was the worst storm of the. Century november, tenth nineteen.
- 43:59Speaker 2: Seven and why is, It, john tell our, listeners why
- 44:05Speaker 2: these storms on this lake and on The Great lakes
- 44:10Speaker 2: are worse than the storms that we see the crab
- 44:14Speaker 2: catchers fighting out Of russia In.
- 44:17Speaker 1: Saltwater.
- 44:19Speaker 19: Man yet one more, Thing, CHIP i did not know
- 44:23Speaker 19: that The Great, lakes according to commercial sailors around these
- 44:26Speaker 19: big ships all the. Time John hayes did twenty three
- 44:30Speaker 19: years on The Great. Lakes in twelve on The, ATLANTIC
- 44:32Speaker 19: i talked about a dozen guys who sailed in both
- 44:35Speaker 19: The atlantic and The Great, lakes and they, said it's
- 44:38Speaker 19: not even. Close The Great lakes are far more. Dangerous
- 44:41Speaker 19: and anyone who's done both will tell you, that like
- 44:44Speaker 19: that's news to. Me and here's. Why salt water weighs
- 44:48Speaker 19: down the, waves so instead of being, plenty they're smooth on,
- 44:51Speaker 19: top they're spread. Out they come half as fast as
- 44:55Speaker 19: The Great lakes waves and they're hopping from a storm
- 44:59Speaker 19: one thousand mile the, way even an earthquake thousand miles.
- 45:01Speaker 19: Away great lake storms are right above, you including this,
- 45:05Speaker 19: one so their effect is immediate and. Intense the fresh
- 45:08Speaker 19: water waves are pointy at the, top not like roller,
- 45:11Speaker 19: coasters like mountain, ranges and they're also twice as close,
- 45:15Speaker 19: together so instead of coming every ten or sixteen, seconds
- 45:18Speaker 19: they come forward to eight, seconds which is disastrous because
- 45:22Speaker 19: now you've got your bow in one end of a
- 45:25Speaker 19: thirty foot wave and nothing in the, middle and then
- 45:28Speaker 19: a different, wave a second, wave has got your stern
- 45:31Speaker 19: lifted thirty feet in between you have four thousand elephants of.
- 45:35Speaker 19: Taconite that means your ship is going to crack but
- 45:38Speaker 19: nothing supporting, it and that happens all the.
- 45:39Speaker 2: Time so would we say thirty five to fifty foot?
- 45:45Speaker 2: Waves some people will, go, well you, know people on
- 45:48Speaker 2: the water tend to. Exaggerate you think that these waves
- 45:53Speaker 2: were exactly that, high and in some cases maybe even.
- 45:57Speaker 2: Higher from everybody you've talked to, researched that was a.
- 46:01Speaker 19: Central question chip and by the, way roltively short, interview
- 46:05Speaker 19: you're nailing all the high. Points kudos on.
- 46:08Speaker 18: That.
- 46:09Speaker 19: Yeah my first question, was, well first of, all who
- 46:12Speaker 19: the hell is measuring these things with a tape? Message,
- 46:14Speaker 19: yeah how do you measure a? Wave second of, out
- 46:16Speaker 19: who believes any of this? STUFF i, mean you know
- 46:19Speaker 19: who can say? Exactly, well it turns out they've done
- 46:21Speaker 19: studies on this stuff and they've discovered that unofficial, sailors amateur,
- 46:28Speaker 19: sailors and small boats exaggerate the, waves and study shows
- 46:32Speaker 19: that experienced sailors on freighters and big ships underestimate the.
- 46:36Speaker 19: Waves and then we've got scientists At Michigan Tech university
- 46:40Speaker 19: and The university Of michigan with buoys out there measuring this.
- 46:43Speaker 19: Stuff and now we have computer models and so on,
- 46:45Speaker 19: thirty forty and fifty foot waves they definitely face that.
- 46:49Speaker 19: Night we can prove that with technology and a fifty
- 46:52Speaker 19: foot wave hitting a ship with only ten feet above,
- 46:56Speaker 19: water that's a. Problem it's not the splashy whitewater was called.
- 47:00Speaker 19: Greenwater that means you are. Underwater, yeah and you hope
- 47:03Speaker 19: the ship bob's out each, time every four to eight,
- 47:07Speaker 19: seconds it keeps on coming. Up but eventually it.
- 47:09Speaker 20: Didn't and when.
- 47:10Speaker 2: We say this stuff came up, QUICKLY i mean we're talking,
- 47:15Speaker 2: immediate almost, correct and it just got.
- 47:17Speaker 1: Worse.
- 47:18Speaker 19: Exactly in, fact one hour away was The Arthur ANDERSON
- 47:21Speaker 19: i should have been, on actually traveled. On it was
- 47:24Speaker 19: one hour, away about ten fifteen miles communicating the whole.
- 47:29Speaker 19: Time it was seen different weather than The fitzgerald was
- 47:32Speaker 19: just being fifteen miles. Away so, again The fitzgerald was
- 47:35Speaker 19: in the wrong place the wrong time more than any
- 47:37Speaker 19: other ship that.
- 47:38Speaker 2: Night and McSorley being the, captain AND i think it
- 47:42Speaker 2: Was Captain Bernie cooper on The anderson who was following
- 47:46Speaker 2: him when he slowed. Down when McSorley slowed down The
- 47:52Speaker 2: Edmund fitzgerald in order for that ship to catch, UP
- 47:56Speaker 2: i think the captain knew there was something wrong going
- 47:59Speaker 2: on on The Edmund fitzgerald for that to.
- 48:02Speaker 1: Happen, yes exactly right.
- 48:04Speaker 19: Ship, look these nautical captains are kind of like airline,
- 48:07Speaker 19: pilots and we're used to. That no matter how much
- 48:10Speaker 19: your plane is bouncing, around what does the guy say
- 48:12Speaker 19: he gets on there with his Slow southern, Drills ladies and,
- 48:16Speaker 19: Gentlemen we'll have a little turbulence for the next half
- 48:18Speaker 19: an hour or. So that's what these guys are. Like
- 48:21Speaker 19: and in, fact they're more so like that because they
- 48:24Speaker 19: don't want to put anything on the radio to give
- 48:27Speaker 19: their competition information that helps them get to the port
- 48:31Speaker 19: before they do and then they can unload for.
- 48:33Speaker 5: Us they're very.
- 48:34Speaker 19: Competitive like football coaches. Basically so he's not putting much out.
- 48:38Speaker 19: There but even he's got to admit in two phone
- 48:41Speaker 19: calls to transmissions to The Arthur anderson that his fence
- 48:45Speaker 19: railing is, down his vent covers are, off some water's
- 48:48Speaker 19: coming in there. Now he's got a, list which means
- 48:50Speaker 19: he's leaning to the right heavily starboard. Side at, first
- 48:54Speaker 19: it's a passing. Concern two hours later it's the first
- 48:57Speaker 19: thing that he. Mentions that means that water is getting
- 48:59Speaker 19: into your ship and tilting it to the right four
- 49:02Speaker 19: to seven. Degrees that's bad.
- 49:04Speaker 2: News as good as McSorley, was you write about the
- 49:07Speaker 2: possibility of.
- 49:08Speaker 1: Fatigue he had been up.
- 49:09Speaker 2: A long, time and by the time this storm got,
- 49:12Speaker 2: bad he's in the middle of. It he doesn't know
- 49:14Speaker 2: where he, is he's turned, around the waves are. Crashing
- 49:18Speaker 2: he ends, up as you've, mentioned probably along this sixth
- 49:22Speaker 2: fathom shoal because one of the divers did he not
- 49:25Speaker 2: discovered maroon paint from the ship at the bottom of
- 49:28Speaker 2: that shoal.
- 49:29Speaker 19: Dead, right yes. You first of, all he's not slept
- 49:33Speaker 19: in thirty six hours because captains don't yes these. Situations
- 49:36Speaker 19: second thing is it's called motion. Fatigue The navy studies,
- 49:40Speaker 19: this and it's about the same as being. Drunk no
- 49:42Speaker 19: matter how experienced you, are if you're on a roller
- 49:45Speaker 19: coaster for a day and a, half your brain's a little.
- 49:47Speaker 19: Loopy you can't help. It and then you've got these old.
- 49:51Speaker 19: Charts they call them, Map we call them, maps they
- 49:53Speaker 19: call them. Charts he might have used the wrong chart
- 49:55Speaker 19: at the wrong, time which sent him directly over six fathom.
- 49:58Speaker 19: Shoal anderson thought he'd he did go over that show probably.
- 50:01Speaker 19: Hit if you, hit that's where the water came. From
- 50:04Speaker 19: and now you've got all kinds of. Problems and then
- 50:06Speaker 19: you also mentioned another safety measure he, took which might
- 50:10Speaker 19: have been the wrong. One, tragically he waited for an
- 50:13Speaker 19: hour for The anderson to catch. Up, well he's got
- 50:15Speaker 19: no long, radar no short. Radar that's. Out the lighthouse
- 50:19Speaker 19: he's looking. For the light and the radio beacon are both.
- 50:22Speaker 19: Out he's truly blind in a sideway snowstorm miserable one
- 50:27Speaker 19: hundred miles p hour. Wins it makes, sense, except all,
- 50:31Speaker 19: right the storm is going ahead of him To Whitefish
- 50:34Speaker 19: point and he's taken on. Water if he had gone
- 50:37Speaker 19: straight through like he usually would, have he might have made.
- 50:40Speaker 2: It so the only THING i knew about, this And
- 50:45Speaker 2: i'm guessing the majority Of americans who even know about,
- 50:49Speaker 2: it Was Gordon lightfoot song which came out a year
- 50:52Speaker 2: later in nineteen seventy, Six The wreck of The Edmund.
- 50:55Speaker 2: Fitzgerald you do a great job of talking about. THAT
- 50:58Speaker 2: i was really, interesting and when it first came, out
- 51:01Speaker 2: the families thought that he was capitalizing on their, tragedy
- 51:06Speaker 2: and it was far from, That wasn't it exactly?
- 51:09Speaker 19: Right he was a sailor himself on The Great. Lakes
- 51:11Speaker 19: he's actually a pretty good. Sailor he had great. Empathy
- 51:14Speaker 19: he was very concerned about the family's. Reactions he is
- 51:17Speaker 19: also extremely concerned about getting every detail, right and that,
- 51:21Speaker 19: song for a, song is ninety eight percent. Accurate he
- 51:24Speaker 19: did a great job and changed the lyrics a couple
- 51:26Speaker 19: times when more evidence came out as to what actually.
- 51:29Speaker 19: Happened so he was a very good guy about, that
- 51:32Speaker 19: and if you get On Rolling Stone Magazine today. Online
- 51:36Speaker 19: those two chapters are now. Online the first excerpt is running.
- 51:39Speaker 19: Today Nice i'm the unlike the creation of the song
- 51:42Speaker 19: and the even more unlikely success of the. Song here's
- 51:45Speaker 19: a fun fact for. You and you know this one.
- 51:46Speaker 19: Already he had never played it in. Public they're finishing
- 51:50Speaker 19: an album In toronto and they had a five day
- 51:53Speaker 19: contract for the. Studio they finished the album after three
- 51:56Speaker 19: and a half. Days he still has not recorded or
- 51:58Speaker 19: even played They gerald. Song and finally the guy and
- 52:01Speaker 19: the studio, says, look, Man i'm charging you whether you
- 52:03Speaker 19: played anything else or. Not you've got a day and a.
- 52:06Speaker 19: Half the studio's, here the guys are. Here why not try.
- 52:08Speaker 19: It so they played the song first. Time anybody But
- 52:12Speaker 19: gordon Life it had heard. It they finished the song and,
- 52:15Speaker 19: said you know, what that's not half. Bad they tried
- 52:17Speaker 19: ten more. Times it was never as good as that.
- 52:20Speaker 19: Time the song you hear on the radio is actually
- 52:24Speaker 19: the first time the group ever played the, song and
- 52:28Speaker 19: that never ever happens in. Recording so because they felt,
- 52:32Speaker 19: it that was the. Difference they felt.
- 52:33Speaker 2: IT i could probably do another, Hour, john BUT i
- 52:37Speaker 2: WILL i will not do. THAT i hope that we
- 52:41Speaker 2: have peaked the interest of. People this book is out next.
- 52:46Speaker 2: Week it is just a phenomenal. Story we just hit
- 52:50Speaker 2: a little of the high. Points he deals with the
- 52:53Speaker 2: entire crew that went down that, day and let's end with, This,
- 52:57Speaker 2: john there were lots of ships at the bottom of
- 53:01Speaker 2: The Great lakes when The Edmund fitzgerald went down in
- 53:05Speaker 2: nineteen seventy, five where they're.
- 53:07Speaker 19: Not there are least between eighteen seventy five and nineteen
- 53:11Speaker 19: seventy five at least six thousand commercial. Shipwrecks that's one
- 53:16Speaker 19: per week for a. Century and you know Where i'm
- 53:18Speaker 19: going with. This, yep not one. Since because that The
- 53:23Speaker 19: Memphis gerald A titanic going down so shocked the. Industry
- 53:27Speaker 19: they finally got right about, forecasting about, communication even about common.
- 53:32Speaker 19: Sense it's too, rough don't go. Out there's not been
- 53:35Speaker 19: one lost, since an amazing.
- 53:37Speaker 2: Record that Was november, tenth nineteen seventy. Five the book
- 53:42Speaker 2: is out next. Week it's Called The gales Of. November
- 53:45Speaker 2: John bacon wrote. It, JOHN i can't thank you enough
- 53:48Speaker 2: for the. TIME i really appreciate.
