- 1:04What's up I? Don't know about the sooner
- 1:06you're doing it. Take it, Lewis.
- 1:08No, you go ahead. I'm we're doing technical stuff
- 1:12right now, so. Fair enough.
- 1:13Welcome into the Monday Night Rewind presented by Federated
- 1:16Auto Parts and ELH Detailing on top row Racing media live on a
- 1:20Monday. Having a little bit of technical
- 1:21issues behind the scenes, so Lewis dealing with that.
- 1:23On the other side, I'm Buju, host of the Monday Night Rewind,
- 1:26The Thursday Night throttle, The Buju Boring Chronicles.
- 1:31Yeah, welcome into Monday night Rewind.
- 1:33As I said, Lewis, dealing with a little bit of an issue behind
- 1:36the scenes with one of our guests.
- 1:37So slow start to the show here, awkward start to the show, but
- 1:41welcome into Monday. I, I, I know it's not the
- 1:44greatest start for you, Lewis, but otherwise.
- 1:47We're working on getting Wayne in.
- 1:49I just got his phone number. For some reason Stream Yard is
- 1:52not letting him do anything so it's fine.
- 1:57It's a Monday, who cares? We roll with the punches.
- 2:00So we'll be giving Wayne call here in just a little bit from
- 2:04Hartford. So you'll hear his voice.
- 2:05You won't get to see him because it's not doing anything for him,
- 2:08but you'll get to hear his voice.
- 2:09So I definitely share this out because he is a legendary
- 2:13announcer has been all over the place.
- 2:15So we will we haven't had to phone anybody in.
- 2:17So we'll see how all of this works.
- 2:19But anyways, we will be flexible because that's sometimes the
- 2:24nature of the beat. And then Taylor Haynes will be
- 2:28joining us at about 7:40. And obviously if you go to
- 2:32Russell's M40 Speedway, you definitely see him on Saturday
- 2:35nights. He has quite the story to tell
- 2:38where not only is he super educated just from an academic
- 2:42standpoint, but he also does coaching and bowling and has
- 2:47worked with professionals and all these kinds of things.
- 2:51So he has a, a pretty cool story to tell.
- 2:54And so today we have two guests. I did try to work on 1/3 guest,
- 2:58but there's AI racing thing that goes on on Mondays that keeps
- 3:02people busy. So a couple people that I asked
- 3:05apparently are doing that. So they're not available.
- 3:08So I thought, well there's one other who I did talk to Dalton
- 3:13Irish, that he wasn't available tonight, but he is available
- 3:17next week. So when Dalton couldn't do it,
- 3:19then I tried to scramble for a few others, but there's an eye
- 3:22racing thing going on. So since we're doing night
- 3:24racing stuff, that's where I'm like, OK, well that's that's
- 3:28fine, that's fine. It's all fine.
- 3:31It's fine. I'm just super tired.
- 3:33It's fine. Long day at long day at Slinger
- 3:37yesterday, huh? Yeah, so I mean, Sabrina, in
- 3:41fairness, Sabrina did have the longer day because she had to
- 3:44leave Augusta, you know, about an hour and a half before
- 3:48getting to me where I am in Michigan.
- 3:51And then from here, we left my house about 10 and went filled
- 3:59up, got all the things and then stopped at quick trip as soon as
- 4:03we got into this constant border, as I said, as
- 4:05advertised. But the getting there actually
- 4:08wasn't too awful. Not as much road rage.
- 4:11In fact, there's more on the way back because one thing that
- 4:14irritates the crap out of me is. OK, So you, have you ever been
- 4:19on the Illinois Toll road before?
- 4:21Yeah. So we're on 294, there's four
- 4:24lanes. So coming home at night, almost
- 4:26always anytime I've come home from Wisconsin, it's like wide
- 4:29open. I mean, we have like 7 or 8
- 4:30different sports cars speed by us doing 100 plus mph, right?
- 4:34Which I'll talk about the high speed chase that ended just
- 4:36behind Slinger as we were in. Reading the.
- 4:40Tire ends, all these things going on and then someone had a
- 4:43scanner, 'cause they're from Wisconsin, they said, Oh yeah,
- 4:46there's a high speed police chase had just ended.
- 4:47They put those strips out like the spike strips and cars 100
- 4:52off there in it when we went by there looks like some innocent
- 4:55cars got collected too and got cops squad cars all over,
- 4:59literally behind the tracks. So I'm like high speed chase.
- 5:02Who would have known in Wisconsin?
- 5:03But anyway, so you know, Illinois toll road wide open.
- 5:07I mean, I usually cruise in the 2nd lane, you know, then there's
- 5:11two on this side. We're going down, going along,
- 5:14going along. That's look like Chris Farley
- 5:15from Tommy Boy, right? But going along, all of a sudden
- 5:18there's this car here and there's others.
- 5:20I mean, traffic is picking up a little bit, right?
- 5:22So I'm now over in the 4th lane and there's this car just riding
- 5:29along. Just riding along and then they
- 5:34wait until I'm basically right there to then move over, even
- 5:39though they had time to move over.
- 5:41And Brandon's like, oh, it's coming out now.
- 5:43And I went, you know, I was born in Chicago.
- 5:45I can do the Chicago drive. I know how to do the Chicago
- 5:48drive. I can do all this, right?
- 5:50I mean, I did 4 lanes, 4 lane switch on our way there and in
- 5:55one swoop, right? I mean, I can do that, right,
- 5:57But I don't have to in Michigan. I don't need that skill set in
- 6:01Michigan, except for Detroit area, you know, where you got to
- 6:04do that kind of stuff. But I was I like, you know, this
- 6:10just not a thing. And I'm so there's actually
- 6:12more, more rage on the way home than there was on the way there.
- 6:15But but yeah, it was a pretty cool day at Slinger being there.
- 6:18It was nice to see some people from the year before that we got
- 6:22to touch base with their media team.
- 6:25I got to touch base with them again and they were super
- 6:27friendly as always. The staff was super friendly.
- 6:31I got to, I shadowed Drew Jack. He did some race directing and I
- 6:35asked others like, hey, I want to learn how to do this, you
- 6:39know, because I know tracks get short staffed and it's like if I
- 6:43can have one more skill set or one more something like my back
- 6:46pocket that in a case of emergency pinch hitter or
- 6:49whatever, you know, that hey, like he knows enough to do it or
- 6:54to get through it or can figure it out.
- 6:56And so I got to do that. But then I ended up helping with
- 6:59lineups and other things going on.
- 7:00So that's where I'm like, I went from kind of working, you know,
- 7:05as media to doing way more and which is fine, you know, I.
- 7:10Enjoyed it, and that's racetrack life.
- 7:12Yes, No, I like I said, I enjoyed it.
- 7:14It was, you know, I got to help cars line up.
- 7:17I don't know that I did good or bad or indifferent, but you
- 7:21know, nobody, nobody crashed in the pit area.
- 7:24Everybody got out into the track.
- 7:26So if anything it it worked. That's right, a for effort.
- 7:33You know, like that it was, I mean, we're getting ready to go
- 7:36and because I know at that time it was like they finished early.
- 7:40They finished before 10:00 their time.
- 7:42So it's 11:00 our time. They finished before that.
- 7:44But I, I couldn't pick up my brownie thing, my brownie shape
- 7:48from QuikTrip about 10:30. And so it's like, OK, we had a
- 7:51little time to kill. I mean, it's OK if we would have
- 7:54because I would have gotten something to eat or whatever.
- 7:56But then as the one race is finishing their their singer
- 8:01bees, all of a sudden you hear just bonkers lights, sirens,
- 8:05fire trucks, all these things. And next thing I'm like, OK, are
- 8:09they coming to the track? What's going on?
- 8:12What's happening? Like, did I miss something?
- 8:16And the process of walking around, you know, was there an
- 8:19accident because, you know, people were leaving the track,
- 8:22all these things? Nope.
- 8:23High speed chase ended right behind the track because Slinger
- 8:27is at the top of the hill and then there's a tree line and
- 8:29then there's a steep hill and then Hwy. 41 is right there.
- 8:34And so you couldn't see the lights or sirens in the air.
- 8:38You know, it's not like it was thick or anything to see that or
- 8:40cloudy where you'd be able to see like the flashing.
- 8:43But it's like you look at the at the road maps and see all the
- 8:47red. You're like, it's literally
- 8:48right behind us through this head area.
- 8:50So I don't think that person would have made it up the hill.
- 8:53It's a pretty steep hill. But I was like, do we need to
- 8:56when the someone with the scan like, oh, and now they're at
- 8:58gunpoint stuff, I'm like, do we kind of need to be mindful?
- 9:01Because I mean, but it is like, again, they would have had a
- 9:07steep hill to climb up and I don't think they would have made
- 9:10it with, I think there was 9 squad cars.
- 9:13So I don't know if one person outmaneuvers 9 squad cars, then
- 9:19I don't know, right? Like as most Wisconsin, you
- 9:23know, state troopers ride with two.
- 9:24So it's like, I mean, that's like at least 8.
- 9:27You would think if they all had two, that's 18 state troopers to
- 9:33however many people in the car. I mean, it can happen.
- 9:37OJ did it, but still. But that's kind of for show.
- 9:41I think that's more for ratings. Yeah, I don't think, I don't
- 9:44think the Wisconsin State Troopers would handle that quite
- 9:46the same as Los Angeles, no. Culverts for you come back one
- 9:50year, you know, no, no beer, no brats, no anything, you know,
- 9:56Yeah, 'cause it. I mean, like I said, steep hill,
- 9:58but it is pretty interesting. But again, we got home, so I
- 10:01got, we got back here at 3:20 and then Sabrina still had
- 10:06another hour, 1020 minute drive home.
- 10:08So, you know, she, she had the longer day out of all of us.
- 10:11But, but other than that, if you want to talk a little bit about
- 10:16your weekend, 'cause you're at M40, I'm going to give, I'm
- 10:19going to mute myself and give Wayne a call just to make sure.
- 10:22But again, just so everyone knows, to start the show, we
- 10:25were having technical difficulties in that it's not
- 10:29letting Wayne in. So you're going to hear his
- 10:31voice, but you won't get to see him.
- 10:34So we haven't had to do this. 23 episodes.
- 10:36We haven't had to do this. So we're going to figure it out
- 10:38and go with the flow. So I'm going to mute myself.
- 10:42You talk a little bit, you'll probably see my lips and all
- 10:45that moving on this side, but you won't hear me.
- 10:48All right, so I'm in charge now with my night rewind, but no, I
- 10:52spent my Saturday at the Russell's M40 Speedway.
- 10:55And I don't know if you, I don't know if you've seen over social
- 10:58media over the last few days since that feature at M4, since
- 11:01that night at M40. But that Judgement Day St. stock
- 11:04feature is something that you need to go back and watch if you
- 11:07haven't seen it yet. Logan Maynard and Brock Gain has
- 11:11put on one hell of a race for the top spot in that Judgement
- 11:14Day feature. And I mean shout out to the rest
- 11:15of the field. There was all heavy hitters top
- 11:18to bottom and it was great racing throughout the field.
- 11:20Nick Stramy told me after that he's never had to race so hard
- 11:23at the back in his life, but Logan and Brock really put on a
- 11:27great respectful race at the front.
- 11:29It was aggressive, but nobody wrecked each other when they
- 11:32very much had the opportunity to do so.
- 11:34So if you have not seen that feature at M40 from Saturday, go
- 11:37back and watch that. As far as the rest of that goes,
- 11:39another great car count and another great fan count at M40.
- 11:43It looks like we got everything set with our guests here.
- 11:45So yeah, great night at M40 and we'll talk about more about that
- 11:48later after I guess here, we'll throw it back over to Lewis, who
- 11:50has our guest now. Oh yeah.
- 11:52Well, I let Wayne know that we bring him in about it because
- 11:54you're talking about M40, so that you're you're talking about
- 11:57the race because I heard how exciting it was, but I obviously
- 12:01I didn't get to see it. I wasn't there or anything.
- 12:03But but that's where, you know, I was at New Paris and they did
- 12:08the enduro and that was pretty. I called you Jack right away and
- 12:12I said we need an enduro at New Paris.
- 12:15And I'd already talked to Chris about it.
- 12:17I said, do you guys have, you know, would you ever do another
- 12:21enduro? Because they did, you know, 3
- 12:24was wide open or backstretch wide open, three and four turns.
- 12:28But then you did it like an immediate left turn into the
- 12:32infield there and then came back out.
- 12:34And I kind of call it like a Pac-Man face, you know?
- 12:38And they said that's fun, you know?
- 12:40And so it slows down just a little bit and everything but.
- 12:45I was very curious how that went so.
- 12:48Yeah, it was, I mean, 451 laps. So you know what I'm saying
- 12:52Thursday when I said it's probably going to be more,
- 12:54right? And Trace Tracy was surprised
- 12:56because Tracy thought less, right?
- 12:58That's what she said on the stream is that she thought,
- 13:00well, it'll probably be less because they get 375 last year
- 13:04and I'm and in my head I'm, you know, I'm calculating right.
- 13:08So they were laying down, the faster cars were laying down,
- 13:1122nd laps, 21 second laps. And so Spencer Warninger, Troy
- 13:19Williams and Chris Fleming were the winning team.
- 13:22And obviously weekly racers, they know what they're doing,
- 13:24they're running cars. But Felicity or no not is it
- 13:29Felicity? Oh, someone correct me if I'm
- 13:32wrong. I think it's Felicity, Felicity
- 13:35Tabby and Megan Richardson. They took second and they they
- 13:39hung with everybody but Warninger and team.
- 13:42They had 2021 laps by then, a bit on top of everyone.
- 13:45So you know, they had to do pit changes because they had changed
- 13:49drivers. So next year they're going to
- 13:50change the format a little bit. It sounds like they're going to
- 13:52go down to two drivers rather than three, you know, 'cause
- 13:56there's obviously people, 'cause smart people do smart things,
- 13:59right? And like, oh, there's only 11
- 14:01cars. Well, there's 33 drivers, right?
- 14:04So when you're, you know, when you have 33 drivers, it may not
- 14:08look like that when you have 11 cars, but everybody had to get
- 14:101/2 hour in, next you're thinking do 2 per car.
- 14:16So that way some of these drivers who we had on teams and
- 14:20have cars instead, right? Yeah.
- 14:22So we're up to 1415 just based on this year, Billy, Yeah.
- 14:25Yeah, but that it was more than last year, right?
- 14:28So it increased. It was entertaining.
- 14:30There was 5 red flags total, but they were like wonky red flags.
- 14:34They weren't like crazy, nasty stuff.
- 14:38And so I mean, we did have one flip.
- 14:41I missed it. I heard it, but I missed it.
- 14:43One of the rum Runner cars hit the tire and feel tired just
- 14:46right and like did a barrel roll.
- 14:49They have it on their. You know.
- 14:53Cameras downstairs, but up to the top.
- 14:56I was following this way and then I heard it and I'm like,
- 14:59what did I miss? So I don't know how it happened,
- 15:02but but hopefully, you know, next year, more and more come
- 15:05out. I mean, Chris Fleming as part of
- 15:07his interview or was it Troy? One of them said that they would
- 15:10do this again, that they absolutely loved it, that it was
- 15:12super fun. That's what was it, Spessler
- 15:15that was talking about how it was on East for the last 45
- 15:18minutes or whatever it. Was so so that's where you kind
- 15:21of think like they held back a little bit.
- 15:24It's almost like, OK, they got to 451 laps holding back for
- 15:28about the last 45 minutes and there's long stretches it's
- 15:30loading on YouTube now there's long stretches like one of the
- 15:33stretches was 57 minutes just green.
- 15:37And so you're kind of thinking, OK, the last 45 minutes or so,
- 15:42if they're kind of coasting and they're just even when they put
- 15:45gallons, a couple gallons and it did like nothing, it's like we
- 15:48have gotten close to 500 laps. You know, if they're putting
- 15:5322nd lap down each time or at least 475, I mean, we would have
- 15:59definitely got up there. So if you think about it, I
- 16:01mean, that's definitely the longest enduro I've seen.
- 16:03You know, Drew Jack usually does, you know, 200 or 150 laps
- 16:08or whatever. Even if it's a 2 hour timed 1, I
- 16:12don't think it's been like a crazy number and that two hour
- 16:15time and with new parish red flags didn't count as part of
- 16:19that. So, but even the red flags, we
- 16:22started the race at about 5:15 or so we because they had to do
- 16:26transponder stuff and it wasn't picking up on some of them.
- 16:29My race pass had an outage anyways.
- 16:31I mean, all over my race pass had an outage or a lot of tracks
- 16:34complaining about it on some of the forums.
- 16:38And so, you know, they had an outage already, right?
- 16:41So you know, then they work through that.
- 16:43So it's about 5:15 and we were done by 8:30.
- 16:45So I put us at 9, I thought an hour for red flags, I mean,
- 16:50typical and dural stuff, right? So if you start right on time at
- 16:535 and you end right at time at 8:00, but you have red flags or
- 16:56whatever, you're going to be closer to 9, but we're done by
- 16:588:30. So I mean, the red flags added
- 17:01maybe 15 minutes or so. And the one red flag, the last
- 17:05one that they did, the driver's door was kind of exposed, but
- 17:08they're in infield in. And it's kind of one of those,
- 17:10Tracy felt like. Yeah.
- 17:13All that one it was tried to go Babe Ruth and didn't do Babe
- 17:19Ruth at the beginning of his career did Babe Ruth at the end
- 17:21of his career when it was a swing and a miss so and time to
- 17:25put him out on the farm, right. So so it was kind of one of
- 17:29those. I mean, that video is online and
- 17:31you know that, you know, so they called the red flag for that.
- 17:34But you know, probably didn't have to be 1.
- 17:38You understand why because again, driver door was facing
- 17:41and you never know, right? So but yeah, but other than
- 17:44that, so I know that's where I was, but I know we do have Wayne
- 17:47on. So again, I want to remind
- 17:48everybody that Stream Yard for some reason was not not working
- 17:53for him. Couldn't couldn't get past any
- 17:55screen or whatever. So he's on my phone.
- 17:58So I called him and we will be pulling him in because again, he
- 18:02has quite the story to tell. Obviously the announcer over at
- 18:05Hartford Speedway right now. But Wayne, can you still hear
- 18:08me? Yes, I can, Louis.
- 18:10And Buju, can you hear Wayne? All right, all right.
- 18:13So again, Wayne, welcome to the Monday night rewind.
- 18:15I, I know we're, this is the first time we've had to do a
- 18:18phone in, but at least we can hear you.
- 18:20So we'll let you know if anyone has questions in the chat area.
- 18:25So we'll pass those on to you. But other than that, Wayne, one
- 18:29thing that I always like to start off with in our, I call it
- 18:32the softball question of the night, 'cause this is a shoot
- 18:34first aim second show. Like we don't have a script.
- 18:37We don't follow anything. We just kind of go wherever the
- 18:39conversation goes. OK, But my one question I always
- 18:43like to start off with, just so you know, people who don't go to
- 18:45Gill or Hartford may not know you, but you announced at a lot
- 18:49of places. So why don't you give us your
- 18:51background? You know how you got into racing
- 18:53when you started going to races, how you found a microphone in
- 18:56your hand to now you're one of the legendary announcers in this
- 19:00area. OK, Well, I started working at a
- 19:04racetrack at Hartford Speedway when I was 14 years old and I
- 19:08had worked there up till I was 16.
- 19:11And Mick Schuler, the late Mick Schuler, who announced for many
- 19:14years at Kalamazoo Speedway, I kept pestering him when I was
- 19:1916. I I'd make out the payoff sheet
- 19:22for the drivers that night, what they get paid and so forth.
- 19:25And I kept pestering Mick. I said I want to announce, I
- 19:28want to announce. And he said come on up to
- 19:30Kalamazoo and I'll let you do some qualifying in a couple of
- 19:33heat races. And I went up there and it was
- 19:37on a Sunday and Pat Beebe was there from the old mark time to
- 19:42late Pat Beebe. And she came up there and she
- 19:45was really impressed right off the bat.
- 19:47And and then I I got on at Hartford.
- 19:54Nick left me one Sunday afternoon.
- 19:56He had to go to Kalamazoo and it was like a three 100 lap late
- 20:00model program at Hartford. And Mick says, OK, it's all
- 20:04yours. I got to go to Kalamazoo and I
- 20:06got on the, I got on the mic and I just, the first thing I said
- 20:10was blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
- 20:13I was 16 years old and Mick had me up to Kalamazoo.
- 20:18I became his announcer when I was like 18 or 19.
- 20:21I think he was promoting the track with Phil Burke at the
- 20:25time. And then I went over to
- 20:27Galesburg Speedway the year after that.
- 20:29Charlie Keckler was the track manager, Bill and Mary only on
- 20:33the track. And that was back in like the
- 20:37early 80s. And that was when Randy Sweet
- 20:39had the rocket car, the world famous rocket car with the big
- 20:43billboard on the side. Yep.
- 20:45And he turned like a 13.02 lap. And I was announcing there then
- 20:50and they had a lot of 100 or 50 lap specials paying 1000 a win,
- 20:55which drew a lot of the Kalamazoo cars.
- 20:57It was pretty much open competition rules and they they
- 21:01would draw like Bob Holly, Mike Benz, Perintech AG netting a
- 21:06Dick Barker and a lot of drivers from the east side of the state
- 21:10and I could go on. Am I going to Bramlin too much
- 21:13for him? No, you keep going.
- 21:14It's your time. OK, well, I, I, I wound up
- 21:19getting back announcing at Southwest Michigan Speedway in
- 21:24Montville. That was in the 80s from like 84
- 21:27to 90. Ralph McLaughlin on the track
- 21:31and they will run a Late model sportsman and and Andy Bozell
- 21:37and Bob Wroblewski had some classic battles back then and
- 21:41they did have an outlaw Super Late Model show when Denny Nyari
- 21:44was there. Larry's at Chuck Silva from
- 21:47Detroit. And then I proceeded to go, I
- 21:52think back to Galesburg. Warnings were on both Butler and
- 21:58Galesburg and they were running Butler on Friday nights, in
- 22:02Galesburg on Saturday nights and I wound up with a stint at
- 22:08Kalamazoo Speedway again back about 15 years ago.
- 22:12I can remember interviewing Scott Bloomquist at the
- 22:15Kalamazoo Clash, interviewing Johnny Benson Junior, who who I
- 22:20had a photo taken with his dad, Johnny Benson Senior who was
- 22:25legend at Berlin Raceway, one of the all time winners.
- 22:30And anyway, so I wound up, I've announced for about four
- 22:34different owners at Hartford, the Knight family, Jim Borden,
- 22:42now Tim and Lee a devil. And I've been there for the last
- 22:4613 years with the same ownership with the Dibble family.
- 22:50So and I've traveled around to a lot of different race tracks.
- 22:54I've been to Daytona, Pocono, MIS, I think one other NASCAR
- 23:01track. I've been to the Milwaukee Mile
- 23:03for the old ASA Badger Land 150 races.
- 23:07I was there one time when Bob Seneker what won that race and
- 23:11he was actually my probably my favorite driver growing up.
- 23:15I just watched him how smooth he was and he wound up winning like
- 23:196 dry power 4 hundreds in a row down at Winchester, Indiana
- 23:22Speedway. One of my favorite tracks, as
- 23:25dangerous as it is. So anyhow, that's part of it.
- 23:32So when you have, I mean, we've had Will Greenwell on the show,
- 23:36you know, he's an announcer all over.
- 23:38We've had a Joel from Kalamazoo, Jeremy Morninger from down in
- 23:43New Paris, we've had Frank Gasco on from M40.
- 23:46So we've gotten a lot of announcers on from almost every
- 23:50track for you. You know, you have such a
- 23:54legendary career where you've done so much for so long.
- 23:58And so this one, you know, you might have to jog a little bit
- 24:02or it might come right to you. What's 1 of the top moments in
- 24:08your career, you know, whether it was from, you know, a young
- 24:13age watching racing that got you hooked in or as an announcer
- 24:18where you're like, man, that was fun.
- 24:21And, and that's something I'm going to remember forever.
- 24:23And it could be multiple moments as it does have to be just one
- 24:25moment. But what stands out to you
- 24:28within your racing career, behind the mic and even as a
- 24:32fan? Well, at at Hartford we have a
- 24:36tradition that we try to get down and try and interview every
- 24:39feature winner. And when I was back announcing
- 24:43at Galesburg, like back in the 80s, I think it was NASCAR had
- 24:48been an MIS that day. And Charlie Keckler said I've
- 24:53got somebody for you to interview.
- 24:55It was Neil Bonnett, the late Neil Bonnett, who who lost his
- 24:58life in in 93, I think at Daytona.
- 25:02But he he had raced at MIS that day and he was there I think
- 25:07picking up some parts from Randy Sweet.
- 25:10And he came up there and I interviewed him and that was
- 25:13probably one of the top on the list for me.
- 25:16And I also introduced her. Interviewed Kasey Kahne when he
- 25:27was with the All Star Circuit of Champions Sprint Car Series,
- 25:30which is at Hartford on the 31st of this month, the week from
- 25:34Friday. But that was when Kasey Kahne,
- 25:38he was famous, but he hadn't even cracked in the NASCAR yet.
- 25:41This is like in 2002 and Kasey Kahne was at Hartford All Star
- 25:46Circuit Champions show and he demolished the field.
- 25:50He won by like half a lap and I remember I've got a picture of
- 25:54that interviewing him. I also interviewed Craig Kinzer,
- 25:59Steve Kinzer's son, when the Gum Out series was at Hartford back
- 26:04in the early 2000s, working with Rick Ferkel in the Tower at
- 26:09Hartford. He was the race director for the
- 26:13Gum Out series and he was a legendary racer.
- 26:16He drove the Zero car and he he raced World of Outlaws for many
- 26:21years and All Star Circuit Champions races.
- 26:24Just getting back for me, Lewis, it's, it's the people aspect of
- 26:28it to be able to go up to somebody like Danny Smith used
- 26:33to be from Chillicothe. OH, he had a hometown named
- 26:37after him. Danville, IN and just to be able
- 26:40to go back in the pits and Danny would come up for an open cap
- 26:43show at Hartford and just to be able to talk with him and to
- 26:47meet the people and even people like curse balding and go back
- 26:52in the pits. I know them personally to be
- 26:54able to talk to Tyler and his, his son, who they're both
- 27:02exemplary drivers in their own right.
- 27:04And you know, being able to go down in the pits and talk with
- 27:09Jeff Gannis at Kalamazoo, it's just fun.
- 27:13They'll recognize you. And I know one story I had back
- 27:18when I was announcing at Kalamazoo in the old Trisac
- 27:22super modified days, this was when I was about 18 or 19 years
- 27:26old and I, I went down to Sandusky.
- 27:30OH, they were running like Hartford on Friday night,
- 27:33Sandusky on Saturday and they were going to go to Kalamazoo on
- 27:37Sunday and I went up to the sky. I was going to sign in at the
- 27:41pet booth and he says, I thought you were coming down here.
- 27:46And I, I said, I'm sorry, I, I don't know who you are.
- 27:49And he says I'm Dean Best. And Dean Best was one of the top
- 27:53Sprint car drivers in in Trisac and he was from Ohio.
- 27:56He drove modifieds, pavement modifieds for a long time.
- 28:00But that that's pretty cool to a young 18 year old kid when a
- 28:04Dean Best recognizes. Who you are so.
- 28:07That was cool. Well, that's where Tina Lewis,
- 28:11you know, as you're talking and you're telling your stories and
- 28:14things that stood out, you know, even again and her, you know,
- 28:19question is that most memorable race?
- 28:21So you've talked about a lot of names, you talked a lot of
- 28:24people, but is there even with all those names and all those
- 28:27moments and all those things, is there a race that you're that
- 28:29when you're up in the top right and you're calling wherever,
- 28:34whatever track that may be, where you're like, that's what
- 28:37stands out or moments that stand out, whether it's the first win
- 28:41for you where you're like, you know, a man.
- 28:43I've called this guy's races for 15 years and they've been
- 28:47chasing the checkered flags all that time.
- 28:49They finally got one and they've been so close for so long or
- 28:52whatever it might be. So that's what Tina Lewis is
- 28:54wondering is your most memorable race that you've announced?
- 28:58One that I think stands out was the Kalamazoo Clash about 15 or
- 29:0320 years ago and it got rained out on Wednesday.
- 29:07They have the Kalamazoo Clash midweek on Wednesday and bad
- 29:11storms went through and it knocked out the, you know,
- 29:14they've got the big tower on the back straightaway at Kalamazoo
- 29:17and they ran the race the rain day.
- 29:20It was the next night on Thursday and I didn't have the
- 29:24advantage of having the tower back there, so I was just
- 29:27relying on how much I knew and not really having a score beside
- 29:34me because I was on the top side and they had the scores down the
- 29:37middle. But I had to tell the people.
- 29:40Who? I just tried to keep them
- 29:42abreast of who the top ten were and because they didn't have the
- 29:45scoreboard. And the next day in the
- 29:48Kalamazoo Gazette, Pam She Best who used to cover racing for the
- 29:52Kalamazoo Gazette. She said announcer Wayne Bunn
- 29:55kept the people informed with who was running in the top 10
- 29:59because the the school board tower went out.
- 30:02So that was one that kind of sticks out for me.
- 30:06There's a lot of them I've I was born out in New York State and
- 30:10I've been out to Orange County Fair Speedway in Middletown, NY.
- 30:15I was born in Middletown and I've been back many times for
- 30:18like the Eastern states 200, the Big 5 modifieds with like Jimmy
- 30:22Horton, Brett Earn, Bobby Botcher, Bob Melzon and they
- 30:28they'd start like 60 cars on a 5A smile dirt track with big
- 30:32black engines. So that was quite a rush.
- 30:36But Kenny Bright Bell, he, he had one at Middletown and there
- 30:42was there was just a lot of nostalgia there, so.
- 30:48Buju, did you have a question? I saw you're moving up towards
- 30:50the mic. I'm just I was curious who Wayne
- 30:53looks up to As for as an as influences at as from from an
- 30:57announcing standpoint, who he looks at, who he looks up to,
- 31:01and maybe who he styles himself after or fashions himself after.
- 31:06Well, make sure it got me started and I, I tried to almost
- 31:12pick up his voice inflections and stuff like that.
- 31:15I I think I eventually finally developed my own style, but
- 31:20there's a lot of a lot of good announcers around here.
- 31:23You know, Jason Seltzer has done a good job and he worked with
- 31:27Rob Goodman down at Kokomo. Rob was an excellent announcer.
- 31:32He was just a real race savvy person because if you could hear
- 31:36him talk at one of his drivers meeting, they were serious.
- 31:39When they they run a great it's probably the best non wing
- 31:45Sprint program in the country down at Kokomo and Rob was a big
- 31:49influencer with that. But I know Jason went down there
- 31:51and announced for several years. Nick Schuler, the late Chris
- 31:58Economaki, who was on, you know, CBS editor of the National
- 32:04Speech Corp News. Dick Bergeron, who was the
- 32:08editor of the stock car racing. He.
- 32:10Was. He was he was an announcer, but
- 32:13he was more of a color guy. And yes, but one thing that I've
- 32:18if I had to pass out advice to anybody that wants to announce
- 32:23is that Dick Bergeron wrote in his column one time.
- 32:27Any announcer that's worth the salt needs to spend at least an
- 32:32hour to two hours in the pits before the races because those
- 32:37drivers have a lot of good stories.
- 32:39You know, I can go around and before the GLSS show her friend
- 32:43go up to Dustin Daggett. Yeah, we won a merit last week,
- 32:47you know, and I'll bring that with me if you have stories you
- 32:50can tell. Yeah.
- 32:52You're winner at Merritt Speedway last week, Dustin
- 32:54Daggett, you know, and that's people eat that crap up, you
- 32:58know what I mean? Yeah, I appreciate as a as
- 33:02somebody who's dipping his toe into the announcing side of
- 33:04things, I appreciate that little bit of advice.
- 33:06So I'll remember that. And then one last question for
- 33:09me and all, all the racing you've seen over the years,
- 33:11obviously you've seen arguably the best years of short track
- 33:15racing in your time at the racetrack.
- 33:18So if you could go back and watch one race at one track with
- 33:21one person, what are you watching?
- 33:23Where are you watching it and who are you watching it with?
- 33:30That's a that's a good question. You go with me all the time to
- 33:34the to the races. And then we got married.
- 33:41Things change. But but anyway, my favorite race
- 33:44would probably be the Winchester $400.00.
- 33:46Winchester, Sure, probably, probably to watch it with my
- 33:52wife doesn't really go to the races that much, although she
- 33:55does work one of the concession stands on the of the nights of
- 33:58destruction nights at Hartford on the East End.
- 34:00Pam Pam is her name. God bless her God.
- 34:03Bless. Me, I probably like to watch it
- 34:06with my brother because he's he's as much of A Motörhead as I
- 34:10am. And I'd, I'd probably just like
- 34:12to watch it from the highest row in the grandstand because that's
- 34:18that's a death defying racetrack.
- 34:20You got to be real brave. You know, Carson, host of ours,
- 34:23the big deal in NASCAR now. And I went down to the
- 34:26Winchester 400 about five years ago.
- 34:29And Carson won the Winchester 400 that day.
- 34:33And he led 385 in the 400 laps. And Drew Jack went with me down
- 34:39there to watch it. And I told him I said, yeah, I
- 34:41think Carson's ready for NASCAR after that.
- 34:45And that was back in the 90s too.
- 34:49Jeff Gordon. I watched him when both the USEX
- 34:52Sprint and Midget features in the same day at Winchester.
- 34:56And then I was telling the people there the next, the next
- 34:59year, I don't know if you remember him in the Baby Ruth's
- 35:02number one car in the Bush National Series.
- 35:06Yeah. That he had won at Winchester.
- 35:07And then the next year he was running in the Bush Grand
- 35:10National Series, the the Baby Ruth's number one car.
- 35:14So. So Wayne, for you as an
- 35:19announcer, you know, we've asked a couple announcers a similar
- 35:22question. You know, what is it?
- 35:24What's the one thing about your job, that role, whatever you
- 35:28want to call it, you know, your passion that you get to bring
- 35:31each, you know, time you're on the mic, you know, what's
- 35:34something that you wish maybe fans understood that's like
- 35:38difficult or can be challenging that, you know, sometimes fans
- 35:43might be like, man, this announcer is this or this
- 35:45announcer is that you know, and what do you, you know, what's
- 35:48something that you hear all the time where you're like, man, I
- 35:50just wish fans understood like what you have to manage or what
- 35:54you know, what part of it can be difficult.
- 36:00The big thing, going back to when I was like 16, it was
- 36:05basically stage fright at the beginning.
- 36:07But now like let's say we have a night of destruction race at
- 36:13Hartford and there's 4000 people in the stands.
- 36:17That does not make me nervous. I had, I had speech class in
- 36:22high school and I was able, when I was a freshman, I was able to
- 36:25get up in the, in front of the class and deliver speeches.
- 36:29So I've never been afraid to be on the mic, maybe a little bit
- 36:33nervous in my younger years. And then my biggest fear
- 36:36probably would be of making a mistake as far as actual
- 36:41information. I don't want to give the wrong
- 36:43information out there, you know, like sponsors or hometowns or
- 36:47whatever. So I, I really, I know
- 36:50sponsorship is a big thing. You know you want them.
- 36:53Try and get the sponsors out as much as you can.
- 36:55The drivers enjoy hearing and the sponsors are in the stands
- 36:58too. It gives you something to talk
- 37:00about, you know. So I don't know if I answered
- 37:06the question or not. I think they did.
- 37:08Yeah, No, we've, we've asked that to a couple because like
- 37:10Will Greenwald talked about like the downtime, right.
- 37:13And obviously, like when you think of a night of destruction,
- 37:16you know, you, you have downtime and, and Hartford's pretty good
- 37:20about managing the downtime, but it's still like there's things
- 37:23you have to do where nowadays, you know, maybe back in the day
- 37:26you could tell a story or you could do this or you could do
- 37:28that or whatever, where nowadays people aren't entertained maybe
- 37:31by that kind of stuff, right. And so, you know, you kind of
- 37:35have to keep changing. And so kind of think about it
- 37:38this way to to dovetail off of that question is, you know,
- 37:42what's the biggest thing for you in your time?
- 37:45I was announcing what's like the biggest thing that has changed
- 37:49when it comes to when you first started announcing to today in
- 37:532026. Well, it used to be that a legal
- 37:59pad and a couple of pens, you could write down all your
- 38:02information and just have it right in front of you.
- 38:05But now Zach Heiser from GLSS, so he's another good announcer
- 38:10too. By the way, I'll put him on the
- 38:12list, Zach Heiser, but he, he's got a laptop computer in front
- 38:19of him and he's got the scoring monitor right in front of him.
- 38:24They do a good job with that. But it's probably the advent of
- 38:28technology computers more so than anything.
- 38:31I've always said my own computer was up here in my head, my
- 38:34brain. That's what I kind of relied on.
- 38:37And I'll put a laptop in front of me like at a GLSS show and I
- 38:41sometimes I won't look down at it very much, but sometimes it
- 38:44it'll keep you informed on who the top ten are and what lap and
- 38:48stuff like that. So I would say technology and
- 38:52and computers is probably the biggest advent of that as far as
- 38:56like transponders, they used to be all hand scoring, you know,
- 39:00especially like a Galesburg. But they even that now they have
- 39:05the the transponder scoring that never used to be around, you
- 39:09know, but it is now on every every track pretty much.
- 39:13Yeah, if you're hand scoring, you know, things hit the fans
- 39:18because and they've had to, I mean it, it does happen where,
- 39:21you know, things go down and all that and and you have to figure
- 39:24it out because you have a show to run.
- 39:26But, you know, Buju kind of asked you, you know what it's
- 39:33like being an announcer and and you know, some of the things
- 39:36that you might say to those who are doing it.
- 39:39And so, you know, to kind of end that, if someone asks you now,
- 39:44let's say someone from 2026 goes all the way back to your youth
- 39:49and says, Wayne, little Wayne, whatever you want to call
- 39:52yourself back then, you know, little Wayne, you know you're
- 39:55going to be an announcer someday and you're going to be
- 39:57considered one of the best to do it in short track racing,
- 40:03Midwest short track racing. What would your youthful Wayne
- 40:07self think or feel about that as you're sitting at the racetrack
- 40:11watching the races? Well, when I first started
- 40:14announcing, I'd never thought I would be announcing as long as I
- 40:17have. I started when I was 16 and I'm
- 40:2065 now. And do the math is different.
- 40:24I've been announcing for like 40 some years, but in six different
- 40:29decades, the 70s, eighties, nineties, 2000s, two thousand
- 40:3310's and 2020. So I think that's a pretty
- 40:36significant accomplishment. Not to brag or anything, but
- 40:41that's a long time. You know, I've seen a lot of
- 40:43different stuff, but tracks get paved and the pavement ripped
- 40:49off them and turn it to a dirt track.
- 40:50And a lot of the old racers are gone now.
- 40:55Guys like Danny Nyari, and I can't think of a lot of them
- 41:02right off the top of my head right now, but Tom Martin, who
- 41:06used to race at Kalamazoo #30 he passed away a few years ago.
- 41:13We lost Bobby Galloway. I worked with Bobby Galloway, he
- 41:16was a flag man, colorful. He, he kind of was under the
- 41:20tutelage of Larry Hartram at Hartford and Kalamazoo.
- 41:25And they were, they wore the bright gaudy outfits like purple
- 41:28pants, purple shirt or pink and pink.
- 41:30And Bobby just passed away a couple months ago.
- 41:33He was a good friend. So I like I said, Lewis is the
- 41:39the people aspect of it. For me though, now more than
- 41:43ever, ever, you know, it's just to meet.
- 41:46There's a lot of cool people in racing, I'll say that.
- 41:49So. Well, and Speaking of one of the
- 41:51cool people I know you haven't met this, you probably haven't
- 41:53met this person yet, but Benny Miller, he's he's part of
- 41:56Motörhead Miller Mafia Racing. They race at Springport when
- 42:00Spring Port's open, so they'll probably be returning back next
- 42:02year to Springport. And in the meantime they're at
- 42:05Corgan Oil and they've done Owosso.
- 42:08They're working on trying to get a race down at New Paris and
- 42:10other things. So they're short track racers
- 42:12who are definitely giving back. They have $1000 to win B
- 42:15features, you know, for the front row drives just to give
- 42:17them a big feel. And one of the questions he has
- 42:20that relates to this is, you know, over the years, what is
- 42:24the biggest, you know, or what are the biggest changes that you
- 42:27have seen in that time frame? Probably you realistically the
- 42:35amount of money that it cost to go racing, I think that might be
- 42:40why that's hurting the, the car counts.
- 42:44A lot of tracks are struggling and I, I think the money that
- 42:49even to get in and you know, everybody's on their phone
- 42:53anymore. If you look down, if I look down
- 42:55from, you know, any, if there's nothing going on, you know, a
- 42:59lot of people are on their phones.
- 43:01A lot of people have a lot of choices when it comes to going
- 43:07to the races, how they're going to spend their money.
- 43:10I think, I think there could be something to be said or how
- 43:16these tracks schedule their big races and why is it that
- 43:21sometimes Kalamazoo is going to have a 7500, a 7500 A dollar
- 43:28will be the Win Outlaw Super Late Mile Show and Hartford has
- 43:32their biggest fireworks show that I'd done the same night.
- 43:36It seems like with a little creativity during the winter
- 43:39moments, the tracks could get together and maybe work that
- 43:42stuff out a little more. I think so.
- 43:47Yeah, I think a lot of people echo those kind of things.
- 43:49And sometimes you might even hear tracks say, man, we just
- 43:53need to work together. But then you're like, but you're
- 43:56part of the reason that nobody's working together.
- 43:58You know, Like it's kind of those like, you know, you're
- 44:00the, you know, and I'm not saying any specific tracks that,
- 44:03you know, I, I get to connect with a lot of promoters and
- 44:06owners. Well, I probably shouldn't have,
- 44:07but. You didn't say, you didn't say
- 44:09specific. I mean, yet you gave a specific
- 44:11example, but you weren't, you know, you weren't going after a
- 44:15track. You're just saying like, hey,
- 44:16like Hartford has this, you know?
- 44:18I want all the tracks to do well.
- 44:21But I think that's the thing, right?
- 44:22Like sometimes, you know, there are tracks in Northern Indiana
- 44:24where one will purposely counter, you know, counter
- 44:27schedule another just to do it because they can.
- 44:30And, and it, you know, then also both tracks hurt, right?
- 44:34You know, and it's and it's on purpose.
- 44:36I mean, they can say whatever they want, but it's we we all
- 44:38know it's on purpose. And so, you know, that's just
- 44:42history. And so it's one of those things
- 44:44that, you know, you're like, you know, if a track has a schedule
- 44:47out in October and then you purposely do stuff on specific
- 44:50dates, it's like, yeah, you're just doing that to hurt for
- 44:52whatever reason it is. And, and, and, you know,
- 44:57obviously in Michigan there's so many choices, right?
- 44:59And so that's it's hard to get everyone's big schedule.
- 45:02But obviously, you know, like last weekend M40, you know, had
- 45:07their big St. Stock race right there,
- 45:08judgement day race. And so a lot of other tracks,
- 45:10they didn't really have a big race, but sometimes you will
- 45:13see, you know, 234 big races on the same day within an hour and
- 45:18a half of each other. And I know for fans, they get
- 45:20frustrated with that, right? And that's not yet again this.
- 45:23Seems like there's a lot of Saturday night tracks.
- 45:27I like Berlin I I like going to Berlin when I can.
- 45:32I may or may not go to that. They've got that one on August
- 45:3512th, 40,000 to win for the Battle of Berlin 250.
- 45:41I like big races like that, but you know, talk about Saturday's
- 45:45Butler. My brother went down there
- 45:47Saturday with his daughter and they had a $5000 to win special
- 45:52and he said it was really good. They had UMP modified with them.
- 45:56They had St. Stocks, which are kind of almost
- 45:58down there, like late model Sportsman and they had the four
- 46:01cylinders too. But then Jones, you know, I'm a
- 46:05senior citizen and I live about 18 miles from Jones, so I may go
- 46:10to Jones just because I can get in for $7.00, you know?
- 46:15But I know that Galesburg races on Saturday.
- 46:19They have a pretty good show. But I also look at car counts
- 46:23because they do put them videos on their YouTube videos and
- 46:29like, not trying to pick on them, but when a limited late
- 46:34model big race comes out onto the track, I'm counting cars as
- 46:38they're videotaping the race. And it's like I'm counting 2467.
- 46:44Is that all, you know? But you can have the same
- 46:48problem to be set at Galesburg too.
- 46:49But I, I've counted them before while they had 13, you know, So
- 46:54everybody's fighting it for the top class because you have to
- 46:57spend more money to go fast, you know?
- 47:00Yeah. But I think that's where a lot
- 47:02of times we've talked about that with front wheel drives.
- 47:03There was, was it Buju and I talking about her or maybe it
- 47:08was someone else, But I think it was one of our Monday night
- 47:10rewinds. We were talking with the front
- 47:12wheel drive racer and there was a front wheel drive at that time
- 47:14listed for four or 50 or 50,000 like 50,000 for sale.
- 47:21And what's funny is that if you went to my race pass like that
- 47:24car hasn't won anything anywhere.
- 47:26And as a $50,000 out essentially outlaw front wheel drive and
- 47:31it's like 50,000 for a front wheel drive and it was.
- 47:38It hadn't won. And then went, at least
- 47:40according to my race pass, didn't win anywhere.
- 47:42That doesn't mean that they didn't do a race monitor track
- 47:45and win, but at least on my race pass for three years, that
- 47:48driver hadn't done anything and it's like OK, and they raced a
- 47:52lot. I mean those the one season was
- 47:54like 30 races raced with that car.
- 47:56And so 'cause they said they had it for a couple of years, but
- 47:5950,000 you're like, I didn't even make that as a teacher.
- 48:03So I'm like a $50,000 front wheel drive car.
- 48:08That's not late model, that's not street stock, That's not you
- 48:10know, you would expect that for like maybe a street soccer late
- 48:14model, somewhat competitive, but front wheel drive outlaw the. 4,
- 48:19the 4 cylinder class came in as a another way to get people into
- 48:23racing and that's it's been probably 15 years now that
- 48:29they've been full-fledged outlaw cyber stocks or whatever you
- 48:33want to call them. But there's a lot of guys spend
- 48:37a lot of money on those cars. But it's it's also brought more
- 48:41talent. That was those guys don't want
- 48:44to be in those cars forever. They might move up to AI.
- 48:47Was just thinking of Josh Van Dusen, who's used to run St.
- 48:50Stocks at Galesburg, and now I see he's got a late model
- 48:54sportsman, the 42 car. What's it?
- 48:57Pearman? Yep.
- 48:58Jerry Pearman, yeah, he, he's really developed a nice guy to
- 49:04super nice guy. But he started out like in in a
- 49:08street stock basically and then moved up and now he's tearing
- 49:13them up in the Outlaw Limited late models at both Kalamazoo
- 49:16and Galesburg. So.
- 49:19Yeah, I'm a I'm a big Jerry Pearman fan.
- 49:21That's where watching him from spring Court, that's where I got
- 49:24to meet him for the first time. And, you know, watching him
- 49:28develop from that, you know, multi, multi time champion in
- 49:31the street stocks, small time time champion now in the
- 49:34sportsman late models. And then he moved up to limited
- 49:38this year. And, you know, it was bumpy,
- 49:40bumpy start, but you know, he's been on a pretty good run and I
- 49:44think he has the points lead right now at, over at Galesburg,
- 49:47like a comfortable points lead. And so, so to see him doing that
- 49:52and, and doing, you know, doing really well, again, he's a he's
- 49:55a driver that sometimes at Springport, and this is I'll
- 49:57kind of leave this into a question.
- 50:00So, you know, Springport got knocked a lot by a lot of
- 50:03people. And that's when I was, you know,
- 50:05I was there and, you know, some of our classes didn't have a
- 50:07strong, what you would consider like a strong car count.
- 50:10And we'd get knocked for it. And I would always tell people,
- 50:12but I'll put these cars against any car and just like I'd put
- 50:16their program up against any program.
- 50:18And you know, cuz Donnie Ritter does a really, you know, great
- 50:21job. He's been able to resurrect a
- 50:23lot of tracks, you know, to, I wouldn't call him glory days,
- 50:26but he's certainly made a huge impact.
- 50:28I mean, I think he's underrated by a lot of people and, you
- 50:33know, but it's like, you might say, well, you know, well,
- 50:37there's only, you know, six or seven of those Sportsman Late
- 50:40Models. Anybody can win that.
- 50:41And it's like, OK, but he just wanna Kalamazoo too.
- 50:44And he'd be Billy Shannon and Kenny had and Buddy had and Jeff
- 50:48Ganis and like he just beat all these cars that with 24 of them
- 50:53on the track. So, you know, sometimes it's
- 50:55like I'm and we've kind of talked about this Buju and I
- 50:58where I'm I'm more of a quality versus quantity, But I know
- 51:02sometimes you look at the quantity, you know, and that
- 51:04matters too. But it's like, I don't know, I
- 51:07I've seen a couple springboard people go around and whip some
- 51:09people. So, you know, and they maybe
- 51:11didn't have a lot of what people would see.
- 51:12There's a lot of competition, but they have that quality to
- 51:16them where they are stiff competition themselves.
- 51:18So sometimes the competition petition is in their own seats,
- 51:21not so much who's on the track with them.
- 51:24So for you, you know, you can't, you mentioned some names
- 51:27already. You know, what are driver or who
- 51:30are drivers that you've watched in your time.
- 51:32I mean, you miss, you mentioned Carson Hosevar, you mentioned
- 51:35Jeff Gordon, you know, who are some drivers that you've gotten
- 51:38a chance even at Hartford specifically, or it could be
- 51:41anywhere, Montville, wherever, where you said that's next level
- 51:45talent, where when you just watch them, you knew like
- 51:47they're going to go do something.
- 51:50Well, probably Kasey Kahne when he won that All Star show at
- 51:53Hartford. I've got Matt Frazier popping
- 52:01into my head. I can remember how he had a
- 52:04modest start to his career. He was running like late model
- 52:07sportsman at Kalamazoo and he ran into a guy one night, night
- 52:11he got the other guy, got a spot back and Matt had to go to the
- 52:15rear or something. And we had a good talk
- 52:18afterwards. I said just let this be a
- 52:19learning experience. But you can say I don't know if
- 52:22Matt's really in the superstar status.
- 52:24He's a good racer, but I mean, he has had some good finishes
- 52:28with the reveal. The hammer?
- 52:31Is that what it's called? Yep.
- 52:33Yep, the Outlaw Super Late Model series.
- 52:35But Phil Bozell, he's a good one.
- 52:45Not have a lot of names popping in my head right now all of a
- 52:47sudden so. Well, that's OK, but that's why
- 52:50I thought I would ask like, you know, who are, you know, because
- 52:53again, you've been doing it for so long.
- 52:55And so that's where it's like, you know, you've had a chance to
- 52:58see Hartford and a lot of different versions of itself
- 53:01from, you know, new grandstands to different surfaces to, you
- 53:06know, all the different sizes, obviously, which is we're just
- 53:10not going to go there because I know Leah's watching and she's I
- 53:12don't want to mention her most favorite phrase ever, but you
- 53:17know. Terry, Terry Seneker Junior and
- 53:22Steve Needles. They've they've won a lot of
- 53:24races with their Super Outlaw Late Models too.
- 53:29Talk about guys that have won races.
- 53:33How about this Tim DeVos from Berlin Raceway.
- 53:36Have you? Have you you?
- 53:37You've probably. Heard of him, haven't you?
- 53:40He's won he's 70 years old now and just when they had the
- 53:45reveal the hammer outlaw late models there he he set the new
- 53:48track record at 70 years old and he's also the all time
- 53:53winningest driver at Berlin ever for features all classes
- 53:59combined. So I'd say that's pretty good.
- 54:02Oh yeah, that's not too bad. But I was, I always tell people
- 54:05I went to school with Steve Needles.
- 54:07So I knew Steve Needles before he was super, super famous and
- 54:10the, and the lay models and all that.
- 54:12Like I, you know, I, I remember walking the hallways with him.
- 54:15So, you know, he was a, he was the class before me, you know,
- 54:20But you know, we're, we were both athletes.
- 54:23We were both, you know, in the same spots of the school at
- 54:27times. So I definitely knew who he was.
- 54:29And that's I, I was a Hartford fan at the time.
- 54:31So we were going and watching Jimmy Jackson and Jr.
- 54:35Hottavey and, you know, all those drivers, you know, back in
- 54:38those days in the early 2000s. But it's like, yeah, I, you
- 54:42know, I tell people I'm like, yeah, I, I went to school.
- 54:45Steve Needles. We walked the same hallways, you
- 54:47know, within the same three out of the four years.
- 54:49So because he he graduated one year before me.
- 54:52But but yeah, so that, you know, that's pretty cool to see
- 54:56everything that he's doing because again, you, you know,
- 54:58sometimes if you look back, you're like, you know, would we
- 55:00have known right when you that's why I wanted to ask you the
- 55:02question. Like if you know, if someone
- 55:04from now went all the way back then and said, Wayne, little
- 55:08Wayne, whatever you want to cover yourself back then as a
- 55:09kid, you, you know, you're going to be an announcer someday and
- 55:13you're going to be considered one of the best around, you
- 55:15know, what do you think about that?
- 55:16And so, you know, because sometimes it's nice to think
- 55:19back, you know, we all started as race fans at some point,
- 55:23right? So it's like as you're watching,
- 55:24you know, what hooked you at that moment in time.
- 55:27And so that's why I want to ask that is like, you know, if you
- 55:29if anyone went back and told me that, you know, I'd be doing
- 55:32media and doing all these things when I'm sitting at Santa Fe
- 55:35Speedway, you know, watching Tony Izzo and all them do their
- 55:38things and loving those cars. It's like I I don't know what I
- 55:42would think, right. I used to I always tell people
- 55:45I'm like, I used to be a Jeff Gordon fan, which I know is
- 55:47tough to, you know, claim nowadays, but you know, I used
- 55:50to be a Jeff Gordon fan drive, you know, driving or, you know,
- 55:53thinking of man, it'd be fun to win the Daytona 500 someday and
- 55:57all these things. And you know, you build your own
- 55:59race tracks in the dirt and you make your own races and you do
- 56:02your own All Star things. And but it's like, you know,
- 56:06what would you think about that? So that's why I wanted to ask
- 56:08that. OK, I I had a thought for.
- 56:11You. Yeah, yeah.
- 56:13One of the first years I was at Kalamazoo Speedway, there they
- 56:16were running TRISAC super modifies and sprints and kind of
- 56:21like a late model sportsman. And that late model sportsman
- 56:25field that they had had Mike, Dan Sperrentack, Jeff Travis,
- 56:29Bob Holly, Dick and Dale Harrington, Phil Lanson, Tom
- 56:33Martin, Bruce Lafountaine, Kim Heath.
- 56:37They were real Rangers. And I tell you what, Nick, Nick
- 56:41just had a way of announcing the call from the Super modified
- 56:44drivers. They sounded like super modified
- 56:47drivers. You know, Oscar Faye, Ron
- 56:50Samoka, Dean Best. They just sounded like they were
- 56:55super modified and sprinkler drivers to me.
- 56:58It was cool. Well, and I know again that Leah
- 57:02was on here and and she definitely sang your praise, You
- 57:05know, where you know, you're extremely knowledgeable of all
- 57:07things racing and he's the very best, all capitals, best
- 57:11announcer and we've been blessed to have him all 13 years with
- 57:15us. And obviously I know the devils
- 57:17have been super fun to work with.
- 57:19Lots of people have said that. And, and, and so I know you've
- 57:23definitely left your footprint on on short track racing and I
- 57:26definitely appreciate you working through all the
- 57:29technical, you know, glitches throughout the night.
- 57:32And you know, you're our first phone and we haven't had to do
- 57:35that yet, right? But now at least you know it
- 57:37works for the. Just in case you know, you go
- 57:39with the flow and. I appreciate that.
- 57:42Yeah, I know that because I'm like, man, we, we finally got
- 57:45you scheduled and it's like I, I definitely don't want to have to
- 57:47reschedule or anything. So we made it work and and now
- 57:50we at least we know we have a backup plan.
- 57:52But that's where again, for everything that you've done, you
- 57:55know, for short track racing in your time, still counting,
- 57:58right, you're not hanging it up anytime soon yet.
- 58:00But you know, that's definitely where I know in my time at
- 58:04Hartford. I've appreciate you, but I know
- 58:06so many fans have appreciated you and look forward to every
- 58:09time you get to call, you know, race so.
- 58:12I appreciate that. Thank you.
- 58:14Oh, no, you're very welcome. But again, thank you so much for
- 58:17joining us tonight and. Thanks for having me.
- 58:20Oh, absolutely. And good are do you guys race
- 58:22this Friday? I can't remember.
- 58:24No, we don't. No, that's because I fares.
- 58:26Yeah, fares are going. The 31st The 31st with the All
- 58:30Star Circuit of Champions, Sprint Cars and Cyber Stocks.
- 58:34August 8th is the another night of destruction free monster
- 58:39truck rides, and then I think the following Friday, I think
- 58:45we've got GLSS one more time again.
- 58:47All right, well, I know they always put on a good show too
- 58:50when they're there. And Yep, oh boy, those World of
- 58:53Outlaws. I got to stand on the infield
- 58:55and take pictures and everything during the hot laps and
- 58:57qualifying. And I told people, I said that
- 59:00was a different experience. That was kind of like an out of
- 59:02body experience when you're like, I almost feel like feeling
- 59:04like I'm cheating death, like it's just going to take one one
- 59:07thing to go wrong. Just to watch some of the videos
- 59:11and hear the sound of like a guy qualifying.
- 59:13Yeah, they sound like they're in some farm field that's about a
- 59:18mile long. Yeah.
- 59:20Definitely doesn't sound like they're on a 3/8 mile track.
- 59:23No, no, that, that was a different experience that I've
- 59:25never had before. I've never I've walked the
- 59:28Enfield on non race days, but on race days I've never been in an
- 59:31infield and I've heard so many people talk about it.
- 59:33So that's I asked Lee, I said, can I go do this one time?
- 59:36You know, like I don't need to do it all the time, but one time
- 59:39and shit, sure you go down, you don't you just don't get hurt or
- 59:43anything. Be smart.
- 59:44And but once I was down there, I talked with the track
- 59:47photographer too and I said that that was different.
- 59:49I've never, I don't think I've ever experienced anything like
- 59:52that before, and I don't know that I ever will again.
- 59:54But. The speed at ground level is
- 59:56really different, isn't it a lot?
- 59:58Faster, yeah, it was, but it was a lot cleaner So, you know, up
- 1:00:02top you get out of the dirt down below you didn't get any of the
- 1:00:05dirt at least at that time. So.
- 1:00:07But again, Wayne, thank you so much for joining us.
- 1:00:09And I know we kept you a little bit longer, but it also allowed
- 1:00:12Taylor. Taylor had to go do some things
- 1:00:14really quick and so he had to leave the.
- 1:00:17The stream and now he's back so you know that's where it all
- 1:00:20kind of worked out that we have the technical glitches that all
- 1:00:23the time and just kind of worked perfect for everyone tonight so
- 1:00:26great we. Appreciate it.
- 1:00:28And so does Tim and Lee. I know that too.
- 1:00:30Oh, absolutely. Again, thank you for everything
- 1:00:32that you're doing. Again, you can hear Wayne, not
- 1:00:34this coming Friday, but next Friday at the Hartford Speedway
- 1:00:37and every night at the Hartford Speedway whenever they race.
- 1:00:40And again, one of the legends in the game.
- 1:00:43So again, thank you so much, Wayne, for joining us tonight.
- 1:00:46All right. Thanks a lot.
- 1:00:48Right. So again, we've been talking
- 1:00:49with Wayne Bunn from Hartford Speedway and now we're going to
- 1:00:52go over. Wayne did mention Russell's M40
- 1:00:55Speedway in Jones, MI. And we have Taylor Haynes who's
- 1:00:58going to be joining us again. He had a little bit of a thing
- 1:01:01that he had to go do really quick.
- 1:01:02And so we'll bring on Taylor. Taylor, usually at this time I
- 1:01:05do my top of the hour since it is 8:00.
- 1:01:07So just a moment, we're watching the Monday Night Rewind
- 1:01:11presented by ELH detailing Federated Auto Parts and
- 1:01:15national Compact touring series. And so now we're going to track
- 1:01:18the national compacts. We'll be going to here in a few
- 1:01:20weeks with the Down syndrome on 9.
- 1:01:24So I know that's coming up, but welcome to the show, Taylor.
- 1:01:29It's great to be here. You know, I don't have social
- 1:01:32media at all that much, but I hear these are really
- 1:01:35successful, so I'm glad you guys were able to find a slot for me.
- 1:01:39Oh yeah, I don't know that when Buju and I, you know, really
- 1:01:43started this. I mean, Jude, Jack and I were
- 1:01:45the first couple episodes and we brought Buju on.
- 1:01:47I don't know that, you know, by through episode 23 we would have
- 1:01:50thought where we would have been.
- 1:01:51But what's so great about, and Buju said this and I said this,
- 1:01:55you know, the Monday night rewinds is that we bring a lot
- 1:01:57of people on who more than likely we could put pretty good
- 1:02:02money on it more than likely wouldn't be on other podcasts
- 1:02:06for one reason or another. And so we really pride ourselves
- 1:02:08on that, that it's not just superstars and All Stars and all
- 1:02:12the big names that you're going to hear all the time anyways
- 1:02:15that, you know, we brought on different series that are kind
- 1:02:18of small. We brought on different staff
- 1:02:19members, we brought on some different, I mean, we had a 2
- 1:02:22hour night of destruction conversation that did over 5 or
- 1:02:26over 6000 views. And so talk about night of
- 1:02:29destruction like you know, and so that was pretty cool and
- 1:02:33everything. So it's like, you know, I
- 1:02:34definitely know no night of destruction movie on any other
- 1:02:36podcast that's on Mondays and very rarely front wheel drive.
- 1:02:40So but we get to have now Someone Like You who's behind
- 1:02:44the scenes a lot and people may know who you are or may see you,
- 1:02:49but you would probably be, you know, someone who would be just
- 1:02:51kind of forgotten. You're in the background.
- 1:02:52But on the Monday night rewind, you get to be the star now.
- 1:02:55So why don't you introduce yourself to everybody?
- 1:02:58And I don't know if you heard the part with Wayne, but I kind
- 1:03:01of told you this when we talked to them 40 that this is a shoot
- 1:03:03first, aim second. You know, we go with the go with
- 1:03:07the flow. There's no script or anything.
- 1:03:09We go wherever, wherever the conversation goes.
- 1:03:12But I always like to start off with that of you know who you
- 1:03:15are and, and certainly remind everyone to share out like and
- 1:03:18all that to help get the podcast out there too, cuz that allows
- 1:03:22us to grow. Awesome.
- 1:03:24Well so for I know you guys know who I am, but for you guys that
- 1:03:28are watching, my name is Taylor Haynes.
- 1:03:31I've been working for Plymouth Motor Speedway and now recently
- 1:03:36Russell's M40 Speedway. I do double duty so Friday
- 1:03:40nights I'm at Plymouth Motor Speedway or South Bend.
- 1:03:43That's where I started, but on Saturdays you can catch me at
- 1:03:47Russell's M40 Speedway up in Jones, MI and I've been doing
- 1:03:51this for this is my 11th season. So I started out at South Bend
- 1:03:55as a gate worker, working the back gate, checking bags as a
- 1:03:59security guard. And then you know, a couple
- 1:04:02quick seasons later, Burn Sour gave me the opportunity to work
- 1:04:07on track crew. And then ever since then I've
- 1:04:09been with the Sour management family.
- 1:04:12Even when they proceeded to buy Plymouth, I proceeded to do
- 1:04:16double duty for South Bend and for Plymouth.
- 1:04:19The for that one season where they were trying to do both
- 1:04:23tracks. And then the Russell's bought in
- 1:04:2740. And originally they ran on
- 1:04:30Sundays. Well, I'm like, you know what?
- 1:04:33I'm already doing Plymouth on some nights, I'm doing South
- 1:04:36Bend on the other nights. Let's go do something on Sunday.
- 1:04:39So I went and I got in with the Russell's family and since then
- 1:04:44they have also presented me with a whole bunch of opportunities
- 1:04:48to where I can help make a difference in short track
- 1:04:51racing. Well, that's one thing that you
- 1:04:54talk about all the time. I know when you know you and
- 1:04:57I've had a chance to have a lot of different conversations.
- 1:04:59I know you and booze you have, and so why don't you talk a
- 1:05:02little bit about even what got you into short track racing?
- 1:05:05Like when did all this start like kind of go back to your
- 1:05:07roots? So like, how do you even end up
- 1:05:10at the track where you're being security, you know, And so like
- 1:05:14kind of go back to when did you really start getting into
- 1:05:16racing? So, OK, so a lot of people, this
- 1:05:21is going to be a shock for a lot of people if some people don't
- 1:05:24know, I don't know if you guys know.
- 1:05:26I know Blue Drew might know, but anyway, So what got me in the
- 1:05:29short track racing was it's no secret.
- 1:05:33Everybody sneaks into New Paris, let's be honest.
- 1:05:35So whether it's in the trunk of a car or under a blanket or in
- 1:05:40the back of the van. So my grandfather kind of
- 1:05:43throwing him under the bus. For you guys that don't know, my
- 1:05:46grandpa is Buford Haynes. He had a Dodge truck with a
- 1:05:50whole bunch of decals on it from head to toe.
- 1:05:53The running rumor at South Bend was that the stickers, the
- 1:05:56decals was what was holding it together.
- 1:05:59Which is probably true, but my grandfather would babysit me on
- 1:06:03the weekends and so he would take me into the race tracks.
- 1:06:08Mainly New Paris because I got in free, but I would go to New
- 1:06:13Paris and I never was at the playground.
- 1:06:16I mean sure, I may have snuck in a snuck away every now and then
- 1:06:19when I seen some friends, but I was sitting there, I was
- 1:06:22watching racing. I was watching Lou and Cindy
- 1:06:25racing, Lou and Cindy Strimy racing.
- 1:06:28I was watching, oh God, I mean everybody.
- 1:06:31I mean Rich Bowl. I had the chance to meet Dylan.
- 1:06:35I'm not Dylan Strimy, David Strimy.
- 1:06:38I see Dylan quite often, but I've gotten the chance to meet
- 1:06:42and watch David Strimy race. It is just that's where it all
- 1:06:47started was sneaking into New Paris when I was a young kid,
- 1:06:50watching some Saturday night racing.
- 1:06:52And then a couple years later down the road, I just became 15
- 1:06:57years old and my grandpa looks at me and he was working at
- 1:07:01South Bend as a gate worker. He would watch Boojoo, you know,
- 1:07:06South Bend and so you Louis, all the cars would come in the one
- 1:07:10gate. And so my grandfather made sure
- 1:07:13to check everybody's wristbands. Well, at some point, South Bend
- 1:07:17needed some more help Ramp. I asked me if I could do it and
- 1:07:21I said yeah, let's go. So he introduced me to Vern
- 1:07:26Sauer. Vern Sauer ended up hiring me on
- 1:07:29as a security guard. And then that's where I got
- 1:07:33introduced to Tony Eldridge. And then Tony, Kevin, Vern ever.
- 1:07:38I mean, everybody was my boss. I was the rookie.
- 1:07:40I mean, I just did what I had to do and then that's where it all
- 1:07:44started. My grandpa got me a job at South
- 1:07:47Bend and the rest is history. Actually did not know that
- 1:07:51Buford was your grandfather. I did not know.
- 1:07:54That a lot of people every weekend find out.
- 1:07:59I mean, you know, but he's, I mean, he used to work security
- 1:08:02too. So that kind of makes sense,
- 1:08:03right? Like, I mean, you know, knowing
- 1:08:05what he used to do and walking around and everything.
- 1:08:07I mean, he's always friendly to anybody that he walked by and
- 1:08:10all that, right. And so, so, yeah, I did not know
- 1:08:14that. That's when you said Buford.
- 1:08:15I'm like, he's at M40 now, you know, all these things.
- 1:08:20So is he sneaking you into M40 now or?
- 1:08:23No, God, no. I sneak.
- 1:08:25Myself in I actually end up volunteering.
- 1:08:27No, I'm joking. No, I good Lord, he's going to
- 1:08:31hate me for that if he's watching.
- 1:08:34I don't think there's anybody that's ever watched a show or
- 1:08:37been on the show that probably doesn't have a sneaking in a new
- 1:08:40pair of story at some point. Mom or dad, get under the
- 1:08:43blanket. I'll never forget I begged my
- 1:08:47little off topic about sneaking in.
- 1:08:50I begged my grandpa to take me to the Summer Sizzler and I was
- 1:08:54like, he was like a little hesitant and was, I don't know,
- 1:08:58this is a big show, like this is going to be a big risk.
- 1:09:01I said, come on. I got to see Super Late Models.
- 1:09:04All right, fine. He threw me in the bed of his
- 1:09:07van. He's like, all right, be quiet.
- 1:09:10OK, that's cool. I'm going to be quiet.
- 1:09:12And I was chilling and I was chilling.
- 1:09:13We got there early because grandpa loves being one of the
- 1:09:16first fans, which suck. When you were sneaking in and it
- 1:09:19was like 85° out and you have no AC.
- 1:09:22So I was just sweating like crazy in this trunk.
- 1:09:26And God, I hope he, I hope nobody turns me in for CPS or
- 1:09:30anything. Oh God.
- 1:09:31But I'm. Just I don't know that it would
- 1:09:34go, I don't know that it would go anywhere now, but.
- 1:09:36Yeah, I'm 26 now, so yeah. But yeah, no, he finally, after
- 1:09:42enough persistentness, my grandpa finally got me in to
- 1:09:46watch my first Summer Sizzler, which was 2008. 2008 was my
- 1:09:52first Summer Sizzler. Couldn't tell you who won
- 1:09:55because about halfway through the race I ended up knocking
- 1:09:57out. I went to sleep.
- 1:09:59I was exhausted, but I had a bunch of fun that day.
- 1:10:03And you? Flop in the van before the races
- 1:10:05started. I actually did take a nap in the
- 1:10:07van. That was funny thing.
- 1:10:09That was my, my, my downfall. But yes.
- 1:10:13So yes, my grandfather is Buford Haynes if you don't know him,
- 1:10:18and he is the reason why I love short track racing.
- 1:10:22All right, there you go. Well, since not to do cheap plug
- 1:10:24time, but usually on Mondays with you a Mick Foley, Mankind
- 1:10:27cheap plug time, and since you brought up the Summer Sizzler, I
- 1:10:30think it's a good time to say limited late models might be
- 1:10:34added to the Summer Sizzler. I can't give all the details on
- 1:10:37how that impacts the Great Lakes Truck Tour that was on the
- 1:10:40schedule, but I'll let people figure out that.
- 1:10:43But it would be 10 or 10,000. That's not the number.
- 1:10:47Settle down, Louis. Matt messed that up.
- 1:10:50Chris, Chris just jumped out of a chair, so I weren't.
- 1:10:52Yeah, yeah, yeah, but Tracy's gonna hunt me down.
- 1:10:55But that's what's gonna happen, right?
- 1:10:57But 1075 win. Plus they get a full case of
- 1:11:01bacon and a grill to go with the bacon.
- 1:11:05So it would be 275 to start if they add lemon lay models.
- 1:11:09So if you know any lemon lay model racers that might be
- 1:11:14looking to be a part of the Sizzler because you just it's
- 1:11:17the 25th 1. You just never know when it's
- 1:11:18the last one They might want to want to.
- 1:11:22Oh yeah, see, Tracy already said hung me down.
- 1:11:24So 25 like I said, you just never know when it might be the
- 1:11:29last one that, you know, Ray Miles added to this.
- 1:11:32I obviously I know you're at Russell's and so I'm kind of
- 1:11:34stealing that because I know they raised limits too.
- 1:11:36But but I figure, you know, you talked about the Sizzler and
- 1:11:40you're talking about sneaking into new pairs.
- 1:11:41So it almost kind of feels like this is a give back in a way,
- 1:11:44right? Like you, you know, but yeah, so
- 1:11:47I forgot to mention that earlier because we had all the technical
- 1:11:49difficulties that that's what I've got you at the top of the
- 1:11:51show before we brought on Wayne. But having the phone and do all
- 1:11:56the things trying to get it all figured out threw threw me off
- 1:11:59where I even realized just now my banner's not running at the
- 1:12:01bottom. So I am very poor at Management
- 1:12:04Today, but in production. So I I should be fired.
- 1:12:07Buju can just take over the show the whole way.
- 1:12:08But nothing has gone on time yet today so yeah, whatever.
- 1:12:15But anyways, one of the things that you know, definitely stands
- 1:12:19out about you, Taylor, and I know you don't have social
- 1:12:21media, but you heard through the Grapevine that you had that
- 1:12:23driver spotlight, short track spotlight come through.
- 1:12:26And I know Jason helped her set it too.
- 1:12:28And I definitely want to give your due diligence on this and,
- 1:12:31and, and shout you out is, you know, you get stuff done.
- 1:12:35And so how is it that just in life, 'cause if you want to peel
- 1:12:41the onion back a little bit and just say all the things that
- 1:12:47you're managing, I mean, you have a pro shop, you've coached
- 1:12:50bowling, you've done all these different things.
- 1:12:53You, you, you did college stuff like how are you managing all
- 1:12:57this? If you want to peel the onion
- 1:12:58back, But what because you're making to, whether it's to
- 1:13:00Plymouth or South Bend OR in 40, you know, 2-3 hour drives in
- 1:13:04traffic, right? You never know to go do what you
- 1:13:08love. So how do you manage all this?
- 1:13:10How do you do all of that? So to be honest, I'm a lot like
- 1:13:14my grandfather in some ways. My grandfather before he had his
- 1:13:18accident, he was a workaholic. I and that's, it's in my, it's
- 1:13:23in my veins. I don't want to, you know, waste
- 1:13:26my time. I want to make an impact in some
- 1:13:28way, whether that's in the bowling community or in the
- 1:13:31racing community. So I just I wake up, I take my
- 1:13:35shower, I do what I got to do in the morning and I just start
- 1:13:39with the right foot forward and I just I do my best.
- 1:13:43I mean, I try and be as honest as I possibly can be, but while
- 1:13:48being respectful and I just, I just do it.
- 1:13:51I can't really explain it. I just, I live to help the short
- 1:13:56track racing community. I live to help the bowling
- 1:13:59community and I do what I can to make an impact in anybody's
- 1:14:03life. What?
- 1:14:03And hopefully that's positive. So yeah, I mean, I can't really
- 1:14:08explain it. Like I just, I wake up and I
- 1:14:11just want to do it. I have such a strong passion for
- 1:14:16racing and for bowling and just just for anything.
- 1:14:20If I commit to anything, I give it 110% and I just, I go out
- 1:14:25there and I do the best I possibly can.
- 1:14:27And I've had a lot of rookie moments where I've definitely
- 1:14:30learned. But then I've also had a lot of
- 1:14:33great moments where I have been fortunate enough to look back
- 1:14:37and say, oh wow, I actually did that.
- 1:14:39That's great. Like I would have never seen
- 1:14:41myself like that five years ago. So I just, you know, to answer
- 1:14:47your full question, I really can't.
- 1:14:49I just, I wake up and I do it. That's all I can do.
- 1:14:53And I drop notes down. I learn and I just keep moving
- 1:14:57forward. Well, what a lot of people may
- 1:15:00not know either. So with all this, this is partly
- 1:15:02where I'm going with that, right, is that your passion for
- 1:15:05short track racing is evident. It's clear anyone who talks with
- 1:15:10you knows that. But there may be a lot of people
- 1:15:12watching right now, who knows that it wasn't all that long ago
- 1:15:16that you were involved in a very serious accident at the
- 1:15:19racetrack that I could get hundreds of thousands of views
- 1:15:24on. That is not touch the light of
- 1:15:26day just for the respect out of everyone who's been involved in
- 1:15:30that right. And so, you know, you went from
- 1:15:33being pinned behind a fence and thrown back at South Bend when
- 1:15:36you know, 2 Hornet cars came crashing through the gate there
- 1:15:40to still coming to the track. I think you it was what 2 weeks
- 1:15:44later you're back at the track. Maybe it was the following week,
- 1:15:46something like that, you know, and you're still at the track,
- 1:15:49still doing all these things that even though you experienced
- 1:15:53a very tragic, you know, and it wasn't tragic in that someone,
- 1:15:57no one would be passed away, but tragic.
- 1:15:59Tragic in the sense that there could be PTSD of like, the sound
- 1:16:02of a, especially a front wheel drive.
- 1:16:05You know, that gets a lot of control through TSB.
- 1:16:07But just, you know, just that, you know, that just gets too
- 1:16:12right. But yeah, it has to be on the
- 1:16:14racetrack. Just making that noise gets a
- 1:16:15lot of people frustrated. But right, you went from that
- 1:16:18where, you know, car coming close by.
- 1:16:19I mean, you're standing by cars all the time.
- 1:16:21You're flagging cars all the time.
- 1:16:22Like there's probably a lot of people watching who may not even
- 1:16:25know what I'm talking about because I'm the only one that
- 1:16:28has the video of it and it's never made it out in public.
- 1:16:31Right. So, you know, without getting
- 1:16:33too detailed, yes, that that was a scary night.
- 1:16:37OK, I still to this day, I don't remember.
- 1:16:42I so for many people that don't know, at South Bend, when it was
- 1:16:47still up and around and doing weekly racing, I was one of the
- 1:16:50gate workers. After I graduated from gate
- 1:16:53working and security and I became a part of the track crew,
- 1:16:57I would help wave the flag in turn 2, enter and exit gate for
- 1:17:04the racetrack. And so I was always right there.
- 1:17:07I helped open and close that heavy gate.
- 1:17:11But it had its pros sometimes, especially after Vern redid it.
- 1:17:16But that there's not too much that I can say on that night
- 1:17:21because I don't remember it. I had a chit chat with oh God,
- 1:17:30what was his name? Sorry, I'm drunk.
- 1:17:33It'll probably pop in here in a second.
- 1:17:35But that whole ordeal couple years later, I seen you at the
- 1:17:38summer sizzling and I asked you if I could see it and you were,
- 1:17:42you know. Yeah.
- 1:17:43Let me give me till the end of the night.
- 1:17:44We'll talk. Cool.
- 1:17:46We at the end of the night, we were under the tower at New
- 1:17:50Paris. And you showed me the video and
- 1:17:52I finally see it and I'm like, wow.
- 1:17:55I, I was, I was like 6 feet in the air and I flew back to the
- 1:17:59end of the hot shoe, which was probably a good 1015 feet away
- 1:18:03from where that gate was already shut.
- 1:18:06And I, I don't remember much from that night, but what I do
- 1:18:09remember is Michael Richardson. He was driving a street stock
- 1:18:15that season. When I finally came to,
- 1:18:19Richardson was standing over my head and I looked at him and I
- 1:18:23said, well, what happened? And he was like, yeah, nothing,
- 1:18:27don't worry about. It just happened.
- 1:18:29And I was like, what? And that's he was like, no,
- 1:18:32don't move your head, everything's good.
- 1:18:34I was like, dude, I can look around.
- 1:18:36He's like, I know, just be cool, talk to me, blah, blah, blah.
- 1:18:40And at that point, I didn't even realize my headset wasn't even
- 1:18:43nearby. Like my headset ended up falling
- 1:18:45off. And without getting too
- 1:18:50detailed, you know, we had two Hornet cars locked together sort
- 1:18:54of going into two. They locked together and they
- 1:18:56lined up with that gate. And I was fortunate enough to in
- 1:19:03the video, I was able to, it looks like I turned around at a
- 1:19:07good times. And when that gate exploded, I
- 1:19:11got launched and ended up taking a couple of barrel rolls.
- 1:19:15I'm assuming, I mean, I don't know for sure because the video
- 1:19:18didn't catch that, but I'm assuming I took a couple barrel
- 1:19:21rolls, stopped at the end of the hot shoot and I was out for a
- 1:19:25minute. There was he was hanging out in
- 1:19:30Eric Kaiser's pit because Eric Kaiser in South Bend days, his
- 1:19:34pad was like straight off right when you exited the track.
- 1:19:38And he, I can't think of his name right now, but it'll come
- 1:19:41to me again. He said he thought I was dead.
- 1:19:45And as did a lot of people that were near that incident, they
- 1:19:48thought the four of us that got hurt, not going to mention the
- 1:19:52other three's names, but the four of us that got hurt, they
- 1:19:56thought two of us were dead. And I was very fortunate enough
- 1:19:59to walk away from that. And then, you know, we ended up
- 1:20:03having to take a week off from racing because we couldn't get
- 1:20:06the materials. This is the story that I was
- 1:20:09told. OK, But I don't know the exact
- 1:20:11story but. Couldn't get the materials in to
- 1:20:14fix the gate because the right side of the gate, if you're
- 1:20:17looking towards the flag stand, it was off its hinges.
- 1:20:20Like it it fell on the ground like it was out of socket, like
- 1:20:24that whole part of the gate was destroyed.
- 1:20:27So we took a week off to get material back.
- 1:20:30And by God, that next week, yeah, my leg was still a little
- 1:20:34taped up, but I was still there flagging and sending cars out on
- 1:20:37the track. You're going to have to put me
- 1:20:39in a grave to get me away from a racetrack.
- 1:20:40I can promise you that. But yeah, I PTSD from that
- 1:20:45situation or having any form of fear of being near the racetrack
- 1:20:52or running that gate or doing anything trackside.
- 1:20:57I don't have it. Because when you love what you
- 1:20:59do, you just don't develop that type of fear we all know.
- 1:21:03Now, granted, I've never turned a lap in my life at South Bend,
- 1:21:07Plymouth, M40. Never done it OK, but there was
- 1:21:13an old saying and I think it was in the movie Days of Thunder or
- 1:21:16maybe it was even in Talladega Nights which isn't the best
- 1:21:19reference but we know the risk when we strap in.
- 1:21:24And now, granted, I don't strap into a race car, but I know the
- 1:21:27risk and I'm willing to take that risk to run a successful
- 1:21:31show and more or less make memories for not just myself,
- 1:21:36but for the fans and for the drivers and for the crews or
- 1:21:39even photographers and safety. I mean, we have a bunch of
- 1:21:43laughs. We've had a couple of moments
- 1:21:45where after we've dealt with some situations on track that,
- 1:21:49you know, we cried a little bit. I know I did.
- 1:21:53But I'm still fortunate enough to be here and continue doing
- 1:21:57what I love. So yes, the gate incident, it
- 1:21:59scared me, but it didn't chase me away.
- 1:22:02And now we're good. Well, that's why I wanted to,
- 1:22:06you know, I kind of wanted to bring that up.
- 1:22:08Just knowing your passion is that you know you experience
- 1:22:11something that. And, and yeah, I mean, well, I
- 1:22:15was, I was, I was 6 feet to Taylor's right when it would
- 1:22:18have happened. And to be honest, I don't even
- 1:22:20remember Taylor Taylor being there when it happened because
- 1:22:22he got flung. So he wasn't in my, he wasn't in
- 1:22:25my line of sight when I, so I mean, it's one of the scariest
- 1:22:29things I've ever seen in my life.
- 1:22:30The noise is something I'll never forget.
- 1:22:32And as Taylor said, it didn't look good at the time.
- 1:22:35So I mean, I took Taylor's credit and to, I mean, track
- 1:22:39workers credit everywhere. And to Taylor's point that it's
- 1:22:42not just driver safety that is important.
- 1:22:43Everybody has to have their head on a swivel and realize that
- 1:22:47it's an active racetrack and it's not just what happens
- 1:22:49between the walls and the grass that matters.
- 1:22:51Everybody's got it. And it's not anybody's fault
- 1:22:53what happened in South Bend, like tails.
- 1:22:54It's not, it's not South Bend's fault.
- 1:22:55It's not the horn's fault. Just one of those freak things
- 1:22:58that happens. But that's why everyone has to
- 1:22:59be on their toes. And yeah, just just wanted to
- 1:23:02reiterate Taylor's point while Because I was there as well.
- 1:23:05And yeah, it was a scary time, so.
- 1:23:08But to come back and keep doing what you're doing, they're,
- 1:23:11they're people who would have walked away that moment of time
- 1:23:13and been just done right. Never go back, never doing that.
- 1:23:16I mean, everyone has a different threshold.
- 1:23:18Everyone has a different experience.
- 1:23:19But I mean, that's something that, again, you know, there's a
- 1:23:22lot of people who probably work with you nowadays who may not
- 1:23:25even know that that happened and that you don't let it, you don't
- 1:23:28let it impact you and haven't let it impact you that you keep
- 1:23:31going on and still managed to do all these things and continue to
- 1:23:33do all that. So, you know, I think that's
- 1:23:35something that again, it just speaks to like who you are and
- 1:23:39that, you know, you just, you just have such a love for this.
- 1:23:42And so why, and I know Buju has questions, why don't you talk a
- 1:23:46little bit about, you know, you've gotten the flag, you've
- 1:23:49gotten to announce, you've gotten to do different things,
- 1:23:51like what is it ultimately in racing that you want to do?
- 1:23:56So I mean, I haven't really put too much thought in that my my
- 1:24:01main priority is to help benefit the track in any way I can.
- 1:24:08And so whether that's you need me in the flag stand.
- 1:24:10I was just at in the flag stand at Russell's M 42 weeks ago.
- 1:24:15Marky was able to give me his flags and I went up there 17
- 1:24:20heat races, 109 cars on the property.
- 1:24:23Loved it. My forearm was a little sore at
- 1:24:26by the end of the night, but I can jump in the flag stand.
- 1:24:30I've also gotten a privilege to announce That is awesome.
- 1:24:35Oh my goodness, I love announcing.
- 1:24:36If I could do it more, Frank, if you're watching this, let me
- 1:24:39have more. But you know, every time Seltzer
- 1:24:45comes and announces at M40, he's I always ask him.
- 1:24:48Of course, I never want to intrude because he is the voice
- 1:24:51that night. He lets me do the prayer, which
- 1:24:55is always awesome. You know, I, Russell's John
- 1:25:01Russell has been very, very patient with me and let me pick
- 1:25:06his brain for tech. So for there for a while it was
- 1:25:09just me and John in tech and then I got pulled every which
- 1:25:12direction to help benefit the show and John's smart.
- 1:25:16I mean, John knows his way around the race car, so he was
- 1:25:19cool with being in tech by himself sometimes.
- 1:25:23But then I was able to figure out a little bit more on details
- 1:25:27on what makes a street stock a street stock, What makes a late
- 1:25:30model, a late model Hornet road warrior.
- 1:25:32You know, depending on what class, what track you're at, you
- 1:25:36know, we call them Rd. Warriors.
- 1:25:38At other tracks, they're Hornets, you know, the Montville
- 1:25:41stocks, factory Fords. Those are a lot of fun.
- 1:25:44You know, I can do it all. And so, you know, to answer your
- 1:25:50question, what's my end game? I would love to be a race
- 1:25:54director one day. But you know what?
- 1:25:56If that never happens, that's OK because I am comfortable,
- 1:26:00confident and privileged to be at any spot on the racetrack as
- 1:26:05long as I'm there to help benefit the track.
- 1:26:08I'm down for the I'm, I'm down. Let's go.
- 1:26:10Like I'm ready. So yeah, so it's my end game,
- 1:26:16like I just said. I mean, there's really not much
- 1:26:20thought that I've put into it. I just know I want to help and
- 1:26:25that's that's what I strive for every Friday and Saturday when I
- 1:26:29can come to the track. And sometimes Sunday depends on
- 1:26:32like day of reckoning and stuff. All right, Buju, I know I was
- 1:26:36edging you a little bit there. Is is there a job you wouldn't
- 1:26:40do? Taylor seems like you've done a
- 1:26:41little bit of everything so far. Is there something you would say
- 1:26:43no to? Oh God.
- 1:26:46I saw as far as the racetrack goes.
- 1:26:51As far as the racetrack goes, not really.
- 1:26:53I mean, like I said earlier, if I can benefit a track, I will do
- 1:26:58it. If you need me to be a gate
- 1:27:00worker again, because there was a couple times at South Bend
- 1:27:03where they needed somebody at the back gate for a little bit.
- 1:27:06Thank you. That's my roots, that's where I
- 1:27:08started. Let's go.
- 1:27:09So I would go help out there. I mean, if you need me in the
- 1:27:12concession to collect money or put mustard on a hot dog or deep
- 1:27:18fried. Uncrustable finally had one.
- 1:27:20Pretty good. Come on.
- 1:27:21Though I never would have thought.
- 1:27:23That, But yeah, I mean, I literally if you just show me a
- 1:27:28few times, not saying show me once, just show me a few times
- 1:27:32so I can get a routine, boom, let's go.
- 1:27:35I can do anything. I mean how even if John asked me
- 1:27:39to clean the bath? John if you're seeing this.
- 1:27:41But if you need me to clean the bathrooms, like let's go give me
- 1:27:45a power washer and some non dish soap.
- 1:27:47That's probably not the right tools to use, but I'll get it
- 1:27:50done. So I think you not being on
- 1:27:54social media and being in the local racing scene probably
- 1:27:56gives you a different perspective than what a lot of
- 1:27:59us have that go to the track every week.
- 1:28:01So with and I'm not, I don't want to say it's all negativity
- 1:28:05all the time, but there is a lot of negativity sometimes on
- 1:28:07social media in the racing world.
- 1:28:08So it's from someone who doesn't have social media and you're
- 1:28:10just at the track and you're seeing what's happening at the
- 1:28:12track. What do you feel we're doing
- 1:28:14right right now instead of the other side where everybody where
- 1:28:17instead of the people who have something to complain about.
- 1:28:19What do you feel like race tracks are doing right,
- 1:28:21specifically maybe M40 or you're trying.
- 1:28:24What do you feel like they're doing right right now?
- 1:28:27So, you know, like what we're doing right now, that's right is
- 1:28:31we're being adults and we're talking about it.
- 1:28:33We're not going to go bash somebody.
- 1:28:35We're we're talking like gentlemen, whether that's in a
- 1:28:38private atmosphere or in a public atmosphere like this
- 1:28:42right here, you know, bringing brand awareness and positivity,
- 1:28:47I think is going to, one, help bring people back to short
- 1:28:49track. Because we all know, even though
- 1:28:52I don't have social media, I know there's a lot of negativity
- 1:28:55out there. You know, I don't like Joe Blow
- 1:28:57'cause he spun me out five years ago going into one at, you know,
- 1:29:01Galesburg. OK, how does that affect us here
- 1:29:06at Russell's or how does that affect it here at Plymouth?
- 1:29:08Like, get the hell over it. I'm sorry.
- 1:29:11Sure. I don't know if I can cuss.
- 1:29:12You're good. I dropped a few ones a few weeks
- 1:29:16ago. We're all.
- 1:29:18I really could do that. It's it's being adults.
- 1:29:25I mean, it's not having social media.
- 1:29:28When somebody brings something to my attention, I always, OK,
- 1:29:32where's your proof? Show me.
- 1:29:33I'm not saying you're wrong, but I need to know both sides of the
- 1:29:37story before I can do anything, whether that's making a call on
- 1:29:41the racetrack or handling something, you know, throughout
- 1:29:45the week with, you know, somebody had a bad experience at
- 1:29:49wherever, you know, I need to know both sides of the store.
- 1:29:53And if we can set down and have a reasonable, reasonable
- 1:29:56conversation, that's all I can do.
- 1:29:59I mean, I, I love what you guys are doing.
- 1:30:03This is a positive outlook for the racing community no matter
- 1:30:07which track you're promoting. It's Yeah.
- 1:30:12I just even if I did have social media, I'm not gonna be the
- 1:30:15first one to go bad mouth anybody.
- 1:30:19Like I don't see the point in doing it cuz yeah, but yeah.
- 1:30:24Yeah, so from someone who's been who spent time on the fan side
- 1:30:29and now working on being the utility man on the other side of
- 1:30:32the fence. Now, what do you think is a big
- 1:30:34the biggest misconception race fans might have about working on
- 1:30:37the other side or what happens on the other side of the fence
- 1:30:40or in the tower, whatever it may be?
- 1:30:42The calls, Oh my goodness, you know, wearing a headset all day,
- 1:30:47whether that's, you know, we need security here or, you know,
- 1:30:50we're just we're talking as a team to make a decision for
- 1:30:55something that happened on the track.
- 1:30:57In the fan side, you don't hear the radio chatter.
- 1:31:00I mean, so you can't really see our points of views.
- 1:31:05Like, you know, I don't really want to give some examples, but
- 1:31:08like, for example, if Joe Blow spun out Timmy going into one,
- 1:31:14all right, a lot of people may say Timmy had it coming and that
- 1:31:17he deserved it and he should be at the tail.
- 1:31:20Some people should say no, Joe Blow was in the wrong.
- 1:31:24Well, we can we connect as a team, whichever track I'm at,
- 1:31:28Plymouth, South Bend, M40, we talk over the radio and then we
- 1:31:34make a call as a team and then we all stand behind that call.
- 1:31:38And that's the big thing, you know, because I cannot tell you
- 1:31:42how many times I've ended a work night at Plymouth or M40.
- 1:31:47Hey, what happened with that call?
- 1:31:50Well, this was our point of view and this is what we made the
- 1:31:54decision on. You know, I, I see that now.
- 1:31:57OK, cool. Or they'd be like, well, I don't
- 1:31:59think that was the right call. That's fine, that's your
- 1:32:02opinion. But you know what, There's a
- 1:32:04bunch of eyes on the track that have many different points of
- 1:32:07views. We take everybody's opinion into
- 1:32:10consideration and then we make the call.
- 1:32:12I mean, it's sometimes we're in the wrong, sometimes we make a
- 1:32:16bad call, but 90% of the time, I promise you it's going to be a
- 1:32:19good call. I had a headset on yesterday at
- 1:32:23Slinger and because I've been asking learn how to be a race
- 1:32:27director too, because I'm like, and I've had sometimes I get,
- 1:32:30you know, a lot of Oh yeah, yeah.
- 1:32:32And then it doesn't happen, right.
- 1:32:33And so sometimes is that gets frustrating where it's like, you
- 1:32:36know, I'm willing to learn, like I'm willing.
- 1:32:40And so we had a situation at early in the national compact
- 1:32:48race that, you know, I knew from the drivers meeting what the
- 1:32:51rule was because I always tell Drew Jack and I tell there's
- 1:32:53people. I used to be the dumb fan.
- 1:32:55I used to be the one that would say they took my heat races
- 1:32:58away, you know, like, you know, all these things.
- 1:33:00For now I'm like, God help me, can we get rid of heat races?
- 1:33:03But on the other side where now I get it like, Oh yeah, the junk
- 1:33:07is getting all torn up, you know, like we're wrecking stuff
- 1:33:10for 20 bucks and heat racer, you know, yesterday we had a few
- 1:33:13close calls were $0.00 on the line and almost.
- 1:33:16For. $0.00 There's a call and so they have spinners spinning.
- 1:33:23And so I'm kind of like, well, you know, I've always wanted to
- 1:33:27know in this and Andrew and I were having a debriefing before
- 1:33:29we got onto the show where I said, OK, I understand a
- 1:33:32happened that caused BB cause C, which is what else we brought up
- 1:33:38caution. So I said in that case, you
- 1:33:40know, would you send like the one car back only 'cause, you
- 1:33:43know, clear cut, you know, although from his angle he
- 1:33:47didn't see that it was a flagstand call, ultimately flex
- 1:33:51and the flagger had a better angle than what Jude did.
- 1:33:53And so, you know, the Jude, the flagstand called it.
- 1:33:56And so I said I understood both ways.
- 1:33:58Like I understood why both cars went to the tail.
- 1:34:01But I'm like, at what point? And he said that's kind of
- 1:34:04sometimes that's like a gut call, right?
- 1:34:05Like you got to kind of go with your gut and, and Gary Howe used
- 1:34:09to say, you know, if you get like 70% of your things right on
- 1:34:12a night, because you're going to sell a hot dog, you can sell 100
- 1:34:15hot dogs, but one hot dog is going to be cold, right?
- 1:34:19And he and he said it's that it's, you're going to hear about
- 1:34:21the cold hot dog. You're not going to hear about
- 1:34:23the 99 hot dogs that you sold that were perfect, right?
- 1:34:25You're going to get the one out of 100.
- 1:34:28That's the one that you're going to hear about.
- 1:34:30And so I think that's something that, you know, even having the
- 1:34:33headset on yesterday, hearing receiver hearing, I wasn't on
- 1:34:36the other channel hear all that, but but that's where, you know,
- 1:34:40I asked him a lot of questions today and picked his brain on
- 1:34:43like different scenarios or different situations.
- 1:34:45And so I, I, I have learned so much on this side that I always
- 1:34:50tell people until you're on that other side, I, it's a whole
- 1:34:53different world, right? And so again, and I always tell
- 1:34:57people I was the dumb race fan, You know, I was the race fan who
- 1:35:00probably thought of a lot of things that nowadays I'm like,
- 1:35:04oh, if I could go back and hit myself with this steel chair, I
- 1:35:06probably would. And you know, because I didn't
- 1:35:09know, right? I've learned so much on the side
- 1:35:12purse where all that comes from and that sponsor money doesn't
- 1:35:15actually really like, like if you're a sponsor of a class,
- 1:35:19you're not covering stuff that night, like your first food
- 1:35:22order of the season. And that's about it.
- 1:35:25And, you know, and I think a lot of times people have a whole
- 1:35:28different philosophy of what it is, you know, because back in
- 1:35:30the day, well, you know, you wouldn't run a race unless you
- 1:35:33could cover the purse. Well, you need fans in the
- 1:35:35standstill to cover the purse, you know, And Tony Eldridge
- 1:35:38always does a nice little post usually once a year about this
- 1:35:40is the math people. So This is why we need 1600 fans
- 1:35:44in the stands for this race. Or if we have this race, we need
- 1:35:492300 fans in the stands or we need this many people in the pit
- 1:35:53area and this but you know, like it needs to math and that you
- 1:35:57might get a sponsor who's like here's $5000, but you got all
- 1:36:01these employees to cover. You got insurance to cover.
- 1:36:04So I think that's definitely one thing that even hearing you talk
- 1:36:06about like having a headset on and calls, I mean, there's still
- 1:36:09times that I, I don't always understand it.
- 1:36:11And I, and I'm right back to race director and I will ask
- 1:36:14like, what did you see? You know, because what I saw and
- 1:36:16what they saw, even though we're in the same vantage point or
- 1:36:19close to, they might have seen the start and I just saw the
- 1:36:23end. I saw like the second part of
- 1:36:25the initial. So it's definitely one thing
- 1:36:29that I've learned to appreciate on this side is that, you know,
- 1:36:32when, when drivers will come to me.
- 1:36:34I'm like, that's one, it's above my pay grade.
- 1:36:37But two, it's like, well, you know, this is what was seen, you
- 1:36:40know, and this is how it was seen.
- 1:36:42And so we may not have seen you, you know, playing Footsie on the
- 1:36:46back stretch. We saw you kissing on the front
- 1:36:48stretch. So you know no difference.
- 1:36:52No, yeah, I definitely agree with you on that.
- 1:36:54You know, actually you you bring up Tony Eldridge.
- 1:37:02I, I give a lot of props to Tony Eldridge.
- 1:37:07He put up with a lot of my dumb questions throughout the South
- 1:37:10Bend years and into the Plymouth years.
- 1:37:15And but I have mad respect for him.
- 1:37:17Like in a way, especially like if I get the chance to announce,
- 1:37:22I always try and generate my inner Tony because growing up as
- 1:37:28a kid and he was announcer at New Paris, he had a catch
- 1:37:31phrase, Holy son of a monkey. Love that.
- 1:37:35Still remember it to this day. I, you know, a couple weeks
- 1:37:41earlier this season, I do believe, or maybe it was last
- 1:37:43year, Tony was announcing for the mini wedges at Plymouth and
- 1:37:51his wife sent me a little video because we were just talking the
- 1:37:54day before or maybe it was the week before about how much
- 1:38:00positive memories of growing up and hearing that brought me joy.
- 1:38:05And I always said, if I ever get the chance to announce again and
- 1:38:09he gives me permission, I would love to say that catch phrase
- 1:38:12just one time on the mic as like a shout out to him because he's
- 1:38:16one of the many people that helped shape me and help me
- 1:38:22become this type of person than I am for the racing community.
- 1:38:25And so if he if he is watching this by chance, you know, shout
- 1:38:29out to him. Thank you for being patient with
- 1:38:31me. I mean, there was some pretty
- 1:38:33stupid questions in there, I promise.
- 1:38:36But he, he helped me understand, you know, there was some moments
- 1:38:42at Plymouth or even South Bend in those earlier days where I
- 1:38:46talked a little too much on the radio.
- 1:38:49But I, I wanted to learn and it, it was always, I finally got to
- 1:38:55the point to where I just was like, all right, let's hear them
- 1:38:59talk. Let's hear it.
- 1:39:01And then I tried quizzing myself before they make the call.
- 1:39:05I would tell myself internally, OK, this is what I see and to
- 1:39:09see if I was right. And sure enough, that's one of
- 1:39:11the ways how I managed to stop looking like this and started
- 1:39:16looking like this so I could see the bigger picture.
- 1:39:19Lisa Harts, she was our race director at South Bend for a
- 1:39:22long time. And her husband, Aaron Harts,
- 1:39:25who was a driver and also worked alongside the racetrack, she was
- 1:39:31a big help as well. She was very patient with me as
- 1:39:34well. And so shout out to both of
- 1:39:37them. And, and there's so many people
- 1:39:39I can name, but shout out to all those people that helped make me
- 1:39:43this person. So yeah.
- 1:39:47Well, Tony, one time he was doing, they were drying the
- 1:39:50track and I said, I don't know that anyone can make track
- 1:39:53drying sound like the most exciting thing you've ever seen
- 1:39:55in your, I'm sure if there was an Ant race.
- 1:40:00And they were racing and Tony got a chance to call it.
- 1:40:02It would probably seem like you would just, you would start
- 1:40:05cheering on one of those ants. And so that's something that,
- 1:40:09again, I know a lot of people could say a lot of things about
- 1:40:11a lot of people, right? And but that's one thing I
- 1:40:15always say, you know, no matter what you think of somebody, you
- 1:40:18know, you always got to give the respect for respect is earned.
- 1:40:22And from a flagging standpoint, announcing standpoint, promoting
- 1:40:25standpoint, there's just so many things that you can line up
- 1:40:28where you like. You have to give props from
- 1:40:29props as you no matter what your personal opinion of them is,
- 1:40:33because earns that right. And so when it comes to
- 1:40:36announcing, you know, if there's a school of Tony Aldridge, I
- 1:40:39think a lot of people would sign up for that, right?
- 1:40:41Just like I know Buju pulls from from past to, you know, the flip
- 1:40:47your mix and all the things right, like warning or do the
- 1:40:51same phrases. So you can kind of tell there's
- 1:40:53their tutelage that, you know, people they've heard announced
- 1:40:56in the past. And so I think it's one of those
- 1:40:58things that right, like you got to get props for props is due
- 1:41:01and that's something that obviously, I mean, I just I've
- 1:41:04heard some people say, Oh, he's you know, he's crappy at
- 1:41:07announced. He went on What?
- 1:41:09Planet are you on? Listen, me and Tony Elder, me
- 1:41:13and Tony Elder certainly had our differences.
- 1:41:14And there's things you can say about Tony.
- 1:41:16If you wanted to, you could not say that man's not the great
- 1:41:18announcer if not the best announcer.
- 1:41:20Tony's I couldn't believe it. I'm like, dude, I don't know
- 1:41:24what you consider great then, because I need to hear that.
- 1:41:29I need to hear what your benchmark is, because I, again,
- 1:41:32he made track drying sound like it was the most exciting thing
- 1:41:36ever in your entire life. And so find me somebody who can
- 1:41:41do that and then we'll talk, you know?
- 1:41:44And so. So again, I know you've
- 1:41:45mentioned him as one of your mentors in the past too and
- 1:41:48everything. So so let's kind of dive into
- 1:41:52Russell's a little bit and time on Saturday.
- 1:41:55You know, what is it there to kind of go with Buju's question
- 1:41:59and Buju, if you have more questions.
- 1:42:00I mean, just like say that, but but I want to dive off of what
- 1:42:05you said about what are tracks doing right, because we all I
- 1:42:08mean, we've even said the beginning, like Taylor isn't on
- 1:42:10social media, so he gets to miss a lot of stuff, especially
- 1:42:14Sunday mornings. But but that's something.
- 1:42:16What do you think Russell's? What do you think the magic of
- 1:42:20greeting it is there or many magic ingredients, because maybe
- 1:42:23there's not just one. You know, what is it that you
- 1:42:25think is making Russell's stand out so differently and not
- 1:42:29specific tracks others, but just in general, Like what are they
- 1:42:32doing that just seems to be hitting on all cylinders?
- 1:42:36You know, there's a lot. I mean, everybody's doing great
- 1:42:41things, but the big thing is no matter who you see, whether it's
- 1:42:46John, Penny, Megan, you know, Frank, Sarah, Drew, myself,
- 1:42:52Marky and the flag stand, we all show up.
- 1:42:55We respect one another. We respect our drivers no matter
- 1:42:59how much they can just frustrate us sometimes we respect them and
- 1:43:03we we kill them with kindness. Oh my goodness, we love racing.
- 1:43:07Each one of us love racing so much.
- 1:43:10I mean, Bill, he, he's arguably one of the most decorated short
- 1:43:16track racers in the area. And then John is a good racer
- 1:43:20himself and then everybody has great racing experience that we
- 1:43:25look forward to showing up every week and making memories and we
- 1:43:30try and pass on that positivity to our fans, drivers.
- 1:43:35I mean, I, I always said, if you see me without a smile on my
- 1:43:39face, something must have big happened.
- 1:43:43But you know what? I, I haven't been that person in
- 1:43:45a long time. You know, I try and kill
- 1:43:47everybody with kindness per SE. And you could be so upset
- 1:43:52because you just, you know, broke your front clip and you're
- 1:43:55done for the season. Hey, man, let's talk like I just
- 1:44:00we're, we're super nice. We're, we're doing what's right
- 1:44:03for the sport. We, we, we just try to do.
- 1:44:08We listen to our drivers, we listen to our fans, we try and
- 1:44:12find a compromise to meet in the middle.
- 1:44:15And I think that's the big that big next step.
- 1:44:19I mean, whether you're going into the tire barn to see Bill
- 1:44:22or you're coming to see me for whatever the situation is or you
- 1:44:26could be going up. Mark, he's not in the flag stand
- 1:44:29and we're talking about rock concerts.
- 1:44:31I mean, it's it's a family atmosphere.
- 1:44:34And even though we're not bloodline related, they're my
- 1:44:38family. I mean, if they asked me to go
- 1:44:41on vacation with them, where are we going?
- 1:44:43Like I'm ready, Like let's go. It's, it's, it's just listening,
- 1:44:50having the respect for our fans and drivers.
- 1:44:54And the big thing is just the compromising, you know, you know
- 1:44:57what, yeah, you're right. Let's not do this.
- 1:44:59Let's do this because this is going to, you know, help benefit
- 1:45:03the business and the overall experience.
- 1:45:06So I think that's what they're doing is just the passion and
- 1:45:10the heart that that's the big thing is they bring a lot of
- 1:45:12heart to the table and a lot of people respect that.
- 1:45:20I guess on the lighter side of things.
- 1:45:22In the microphone he has something to say, so it's
- 1:45:24getting closer. So I'm like, that's his towels
- 1:45:28that he gets. Go.
- 1:45:30Ahead. No, no, when you get closer, I'm
- 1:45:33like, I know he wants to ask a question, so that's why I look
- 1:45:35at him. And then sometimes there's an
- 1:45:37awkward silence. And I'm not a big awkward
- 1:45:39silence person, but I always feel like there should be kind
- 1:45:42of something, even though that's not true.
- 1:45:44But I, I watch him and he gets close to the mic when I know he
- 1:45:47wants to get something. So he got super close.
- 1:45:48So I'm like, I know he's ready. I think I was just finishing
- 1:45:51there, but I can go if you if you eliminate your track.
- 1:45:53So at Plymouth, South Bend and M40, if you can go watch it.
- 1:45:57And I've after he answers this question, Lewis, I found a
- 1:46:00surprising fact out about Taylor on Saturday.
- 1:46:02But if you, if you could eliminate your tracks, if you
- 1:46:05could go watch a race somewhere, where would it be?
- 1:46:11You know, I hear Slinger's a lot of fun, but boojoo, you already
- 1:46:14know what I'm going to say. I I got to go to Kalamazoo.
- 1:46:17He's never been to. Suit.
- 1:46:19Yeah. Oh.
- 1:46:20Oh yeah, that's, I mean. I I got to go like I I have to
- 1:46:25go. Plymouth's running down on
- 1:46:27Fridays, Taylor, so your time to go to Kalamazoo is coming up
- 1:46:30soon. I'll drag you up there myself if
- 1:46:31I have to. You got to go.
- 1:46:33Make the trip to Portage IN. I'm ready.
- 1:46:36I'll meet you halfway and then we'll go there.
- 1:46:37We. Go.
- 1:46:40You're thinking Super Shoe if you haven't been Michigan cop.
- 1:46:45Michigan, Yeah, at Springport. So is.
- 1:46:48Oh yes. So here's the way that I explain
- 1:46:51it. I'm a I'm Eileen, Michigan cop.
- 1:46:55I handle Super Shoe. Super Shoe is a party that has
- 1:46:58racing. OK up is racing that has family
- 1:47:03time, you know, So that's how I relate.
- 1:47:05They're both great racing, don't get me wrong, but the Super Shoe
- 1:47:09experience is almost like going to Las Vegas and.
- 1:47:14Been there a couple times you. Go to the beach to watch
- 1:47:17fireworks? OK, relaxing night.
- 1:47:20Watch a few things go boom in the sky.
- 1:47:22Right? Like so Michigan.
- 1:47:24Have a couple drinks. Maybe maybe you know, I don't
- 1:47:28get hit by golf carts or see golf or demolition.
- 1:47:33So I prefer the chill of Michigan Cup, but I don't mind
- 1:47:38super shoe. But it's just, it's a very
- 1:47:40different environment. But the racing's great.
- 1:47:43You get, you know, with Donnie in charge, we had the highest
- 1:47:47number last year in a long time at Super Shoe, which rivaled
- 1:47:51what Michigan Cup was doing. Michigan Cup a couple years beat
- 1:47:55everybody in the state of Michigan.
- 1:47:56Not last year. Last year's a different Michigan
- 1:47:59Cup vibe under different leadership.
- 1:48:01But this year the Ritter's will have it back.
- 1:48:03And so hoping that it gets close.
- 1:48:06I mean, I think they're going to probably need to, you know,
- 1:48:08another year to just really get ready.
- 1:48:09This is their first one. But if you if you experienced
- 1:48:13Super Shoe, go try Michigan Cup one week later in Springport.
- 1:48:17Give it a shot and then report back.
- 1:48:20Definitely. You know, I do a lot of working
- 1:48:23for. Modified to spring port.
- 1:48:25Modified to spring port that will sell the ticket alone and
- 1:48:29and spring ports like this. It's not quite Slinger banking,
- 1:48:33but it's it's up there. It's bank.
- 1:48:36We, you know you, you talk about modifieds.
- 1:48:39I know this is a little off track, but gosh, where are the
- 1:48:43modifieds at Like are where are they?
- 1:48:46Duh. I I want to see more modified
- 1:48:50racing. Oh my God, I feel like there's
- 1:48:52really I, I, I have flow racing. So sometimes I watch the wheel
- 1:48:57and modified door and those are fun to watch.
- 1:49:00But like other than the summer Sizzler, I don't really.
- 1:49:03I know Angola runs them a little bit, but like, where are they?
- 1:49:07Like is. 2 has 55 registered right now if I remember
- 1:49:10correctly for which is August 8th.
- 1:49:14I am Friday August 8th and then they have little shoe which is
- 1:49:20if you've never raised hot shoe, you get to do a little shoe
- 1:49:23which is on Friday the 7th. Like if Kyle Larson showed up,
- 1:49:28Kyle Larson could race Little shoe because he's never raced
- 1:49:33hot shoe. And so I'm still trying to
- 1:49:36understand. It all this is all breaking.
- 1:49:38News. Oh yeah, this is a sense.
- 1:49:40Hot shoe was at Owosso because everybody went to Owosso, right?
- 1:49:43Owosso was big. Let's get the chalkboard out.
- 1:49:45Teach us what's happening. So, you know, when Owosso was
- 1:49:49all shiny and everything, everyone went to Owosso because
- 1:49:52they just had all the money in the world to throw at things.
- 1:49:54And so they could do that, right?
- 1:49:55They made their own outlaw series.
- 1:49:57They made their own this, their own that.
- 1:49:58They probably made their own beer at some point too, but now
- 1:50:03there's some pulling away and that's something against Owasso,
- 1:50:05right? They do a lot of incredible
- 1:50:07things, so this is not a knock on them.
- 1:50:08It's just they got everything right.
- 1:50:11There's only so many dates that you can do stuff right So.
- 1:50:15That's another track I got to go to.
- 1:50:17So yeah, I mean, I'm not been Owasso, but you know, we've got
- 1:50:21we've gotten mad on here. You know, people get so mad out
- 1:50:24of Wassouver things. It's like the track could be
- 1:50:25closed. Rex Wheeler put in millions of
- 1:50:27dollars that he'll never make it back.
- 1:50:30And so you're going to criticize that guy.
- 1:50:32The track could be closed. So you'll be grateful for what
- 1:50:35you have. But anyways, you get big shiny
- 1:50:38things. It's like a head coach.
- 1:50:39You know, you go coach at Michigan, but you can go make
- 1:50:42you 5 million more at Alabama and get a bigger house.
- 1:50:45Alabama, you're going to go to Alabama, right?
- 1:50:46You're just chasing money and to get bigger and better things.
- 1:50:49So Wasel's bigger, better things, but then people want
- 1:50:52more, but you're not going to get more and you can't compare
- 1:50:55Wasel everyone else. But anyways, so that Hashu was
- 1:50:58at a Wasel for the last couple years.
- 1:50:59It says Spring Court before that.
- 1:51:01So it's coming to Kalamazoo for the first time to my
- 1:51:03understanding is first time and that's modified.
- 1:51:06So then they'll have St. stocks as a support class.
- 1:51:08So unfortunately they're going head to head with flagger boy.
- 1:51:12So I already know a lot of Kalamazoo cars that we I know
- 1:51:16Buju, I said the same face, but they so a lot of your Kalamazoo
- 1:51:20cars will be going to flagger boy that I already know that I
- 1:51:23already know the names her going to flagger boy.
- 1:51:24They're not going to do hot shoe, but hot shoe is about the
- 1:51:27modifieds with an extra class. And so they're going to have
- 1:51:31modified Sarah 55 right now. But a modified country is
- 1:51:34Springport, Owasso, a little bit of Corrigan like you get Central
- 1:51:38Michigan. That's where a lot of them are
- 1:51:41and that's where it's kind of funny because you come down this
- 1:51:44way, it's St. Stock racing.
- 1:51:46You know, you go to whether that is you know, Russell's, whether
- 1:51:50that is Kalamazoo, you know, whether it is new Paris,
- 1:51:53wherever, right? You like you get a lot you down
- 1:51:55here strong St. Stock racing where Central
- 1:51:59Michigan, the street stock racing I wouldn't consider very
- 1:52:02strong. Corgan had caught them because
- 1:52:03there was no St. Stocks.
- 1:52:05Springport would average 8 to 10 St. stocks bigger shows.
- 1:52:12They bring in outsiders, you know, so then you'd have like
- 1:52:16Michigan couple have C features for street socks, but on a
- 1:52:20normal night, you know, comfortably in the A feature and
- 1:52:23but modifieds you get those modifieds on that track.
- 1:52:29It's an experience. It is the only similar
- 1:52:32experience that I can compare to Springport modifieds is
- 1:52:35Lorraine. Ohio is watching this, watching
- 1:52:38them come off the backstretch at Lorraine.
- 1:52:40And I think if M40 ever did ever did modifieds, I think that
- 1:52:45would be a close. I know Bill talked about they've
- 1:52:49talked about modifieds at times, but I think I think you know,
- 1:52:52and they do well at Kalamazoo too.
- 1:52:54But if I were to compare modified racing to, you know,
- 1:52:57Springport and Kalamazoo, I would rather watch modifieds at
- 1:53:00Springport where I would rather watch St.
- 1:53:02Stocks at Kalamazoo, right? Like class by class, you know,
- 1:53:05you kind of go, which would I rather watch at?
- 1:53:07That doesn't mean I don't love them at Kalamazoo, that is, or
- 1:53:09like it just means if I had the preference and I had to pick a
- 1:53:14coin side, that's the way that I would lean.
- 1:53:16But that's where a lot of your modifieds are.
- 1:53:18That's modified country up there.
- 1:53:19So Wasso gets 30 some cars, you know, even for a normal paying
- 1:53:23night this Friday we this is one of the events that we borrowed
- 1:53:27from New Paris. So new Paris has the V8 classic
- 1:53:30V8 special. So this Friday they're doing AV
- 1:53:358 classic V8 special. So I know modifieds.
- 1:53:37I was trying to get Matthew also junior on here, but he's doing
- 1:53:41an eye racing thing. But he's racing and modified.
- 1:53:43But we have modifieds late models.
- 1:53:46I think St. stocks, Tina can correct me, but I know she was
- 1:53:49commenting at the same time. That's where I was also going.
- 1:53:51But but we're we'll have a lot because this is a hot shoe.
- 1:53:54Kind of this is the last chance for driver modified drivers to
- 1:53:57get on the track and practice. And we had an awesome a feature
- 1:54:01a few weeks ago. I mean, they were that's
- 1:54:03probably the best modified race that I have seen at Kalamazoo
- 1:54:05was a few weeks ago. And but man, you watch them at
- 1:54:09Springport just with the banking and everything and it's wide
- 1:54:13open and you're in the middle of 70 acres and there's.
- 1:54:16Just. Cows and goats and chickens
- 1:54:19around you. I mean, there's nothing around
- 1:54:21you at Springport. It's literally just farm field
- 1:54:25fun. So if you but I know we were
- 1:54:27talking about Super Shoe in the Michigan Cup, but then you
- 1:54:30brought up modifieds. But that yeah, that's that's
- 1:54:32modified countries, Central Michigan and probably Angola.
- 1:54:35Angola had what, 40 some a few weeks.
- 1:54:37I know they go down that way, but.
- 1:54:41I don't know if they dip into Ohio and stuff out that way or
- 1:54:43not, but yeah the the modifieds do miss our area.
- 1:54:46A lot of the times it seems to better unfortunately.
- 1:54:48Kind of up and around, although Nucleus does a pretty nice shot
- 1:54:51with modifieds. We've got a couple of drivers to
- 1:54:54come out. But yeah, 55 modifieds so far on
- 1:54:58the list. So over for hot Shoe, which is
- 1:55:01again, it's it's unfortunate that they're going head to head
- 1:55:04with with Flagger Boy 'cause that's going to split a lot of
- 1:55:08people. And I was, I was not a big fan
- 1:55:12when I heard St. socks would be racing.
- 1:55:14But Donnie had a fairpoint as did you Jack like, but it might
- 1:55:18get someone who doesn't usually went on a Friday night or
- 1:55:21whatever in a street stock, you know, a chance because a lot of
- 1:55:25the heavy hitters, I get it, booze you but plain and like
- 1:55:29that. But flagger boy, you know, but
- 1:55:33in fairness, the people who run hot shoe wouldn't probably even
- 1:55:35know flagger boy. So, you know, they're not
- 1:55:38affected in that way. So but I'm like of all things
- 1:55:42flagger boy. But but but yeah, so that So if
- 1:55:47you're not doing anything that weekend modify tech Kalamazoo
- 1:55:52hot shoe. Before we let you go, before we
- 1:55:54let you go, Taylor, it seems like we have to talk about
- 1:55:56bowling. Seems like bowling's a pretty
- 1:55:57big part of your life. So.
- 1:55:59So yeah, you mentioned that being you're as almost as
- 1:56:03passionate about that as you are short track racing.
- 1:56:05So what does bowling mean to you, Taylor?
- 1:56:08So bowling's a lot. Not too many people know this.
- 1:56:11In high school, I was an Indiana All Star.
- 1:56:15I, I have a sportsmanship award from high school bowling and
- 1:56:21then going into college, I was an All American in 2021.
- 1:56:25What else? I lost track of how many three
- 1:56:29hundreds I've had. I couldn't get them in high
- 1:56:32school. I had one.
- 1:56:34And then I go to college and then I just start lighting them
- 1:56:36up, which is great, but I'm assuming that's where I did a
- 1:56:39lot of my maturing. But bowling is a big part of my
- 1:56:43life. Bowling has allowed me to see 26
- 1:56:46states. So I've traveled to 26 different
- 1:56:50states, mainly on the East Coast, a couple on the West
- 1:56:53Coast. I've gone.
- 1:56:54I mean, majority of the states that I've been to have been east
- 1:56:57of the Mississippi. I have traveled West of the
- 1:57:01Mississippi like Missouri, Iowa, Nevada.
- 1:57:05Actually just the in 2020, April of 2025, I, me and my college
- 1:57:14team qualified for ITC Nationals, which is called the
- 1:57:18Intercollegiate team championship.
- 1:57:20And we went to Las Vegas and bowled in the stadium.
- 1:57:23That was awesome. So what's another one?
- 1:57:29Bowling is just a big part of my life.
- 1:57:31When I'm not at a racetrack, I'm at a bowling singer.
- 1:57:34If I'm not at neither, don't bother me because I'm sleeping
- 1:57:36at home. So, but yeah, bowling is a big
- 1:57:41part of my life. I actually just two weeks ago, I
- 1:57:44was at something called Bowl Expo in Nashville, TN and I went
- 1:57:48there with the business that I work for of Olympia Lanes.
- 1:57:52They own 2 bowling centers, one in Hammond, one in Michigan
- 1:57:56City. I run the pro shop in Michigan
- 1:57:58City as well, doing some other things.
- 1:58:01So my boss was able to take a lot of his higher ups and some
- 1:58:06of their spouses and we went to Nashville and had a great
- 1:58:10experience. Got to go to Bucky's for the
- 1:58:12first time. That was awesome.
- 1:58:14I got this nice little button up.
- 1:58:16I'm gonna wear it to the track one day, but that different
- 1:58:18story. I've had the chance to go there
- 1:58:21and see some of the the greats in the bowling industry, like EJ
- 1:58:25Tackett, who's arguably one been one of the hottest players in
- 1:58:29the world these last couple of years.
- 1:58:31Got to see him, Sean Rash, Parker Bond, the third, a whole
- 1:58:35bunch of big bowling names and just got to make friendships.
- 1:58:40And I sat in on some pro shop seminars so that I can be a
- 1:58:43better pro shop operator. So yeah, but bowling.
- 1:58:47Bowling has taken me places I never thought I would go.
- 1:58:51You know, before I graduated high school, I've only been to
- 1:58:55four states, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio and Michigan.
- 1:59:02And then after I go into college and then go to school for five
- 1:59:07years because I had a COVID year, so I got one year of
- 1:59:10eligibility back. So I furthered my education at
- 1:59:14Calumet College. It has taken me all over.
- 1:59:18Oh, my Lord has it taken me all over.
- 1:59:21I mean, every state I've gone to.
- 1:59:23I never had a suitcase packed for vacation.
- 1:59:27I had my bowling balls and I was competing at the collegiate
- 1:59:31level. So yeah.
- 1:59:33So one thing not too many people know about me is bowling is a
- 1:59:36big part of my life, just like racing.
- 1:59:38And it has taken me just as far as racing has and given me just
- 1:59:43as much memories as well. Have you snuck into a bowling
- 1:59:48alley? No, no, I I will say one thing.
- 1:59:54There is a tournament in Indianapolis called the Hoosier,
- 1:59:58and it's the biggest Tier 1 collegiate tournament in
- 2:00:02America. It's one of the last tournaments
- 2:00:05before postseason and there's a lot of stuff on the line.
- 2:00:09Your big schools are going to be there.
- 2:00:12So like Cal, you met. I always refer to as like the
- 2:00:15Notre Dame of collegiate bowling.
- 2:00:18We can always get to the big show and then we kind of shit
- 2:00:21the bed. But I'm a big Notre Dame fan.
- 2:00:25And all right, I'll let it go. Sorry, but no, it's college.
- 2:00:35Hoosier is always a lot of fun and one time when we were going,
- 2:00:41I lost my ID badge. So there's an athletic entrance
- 2:00:45where all the bowlers and coaches come in, and then
- 2:00:47there's the main entrance where your parents, your spectators,
- 2:00:51that's where they go buy a ticket if they haven't bought
- 2:00:53one previously online. Well, I forgot my badge back at
- 2:00:57the hotel, couple my teammates go in, set their stuff down,
- 2:01:01grab another badge, come out back to the van, gave me their
- 2:01:05badge, I come back in. Now granted I didn't sneak in.
- 2:01:09I was on the roster, but I kind of goofed.
- 2:01:17It it happens, but there's actually, I don't think a lot of
- 2:01:19people understand too. Like you talk about bowling,
- 2:01:21your passion, there's a lot of people in the racing world who
- 2:01:23are also bowlers like I think. There's a lot of crossover.
- 2:01:27Yeah, you know, he's a limited late model racer and a template.
- 2:01:31Kalamazoo, he does bowling. He went to Reno a few weeks ago.
- 2:01:34One of the modified drivers, Cody Hall, he does.
- 2:01:37He's been a flag man at Springport before, but races and
- 2:01:40modifieds help with all that. He's a collegiate bowler and.
- 2:01:44Has really. So, so there's a lot of
- 2:01:46crossover with bowling and racing that I've noticed there's
- 2:01:49quite a few people who I know are some parents coach bowling
- 2:01:54right. And, and so, so it's one of
- 2:01:56those that there's a, there's quite a few people who get into
- 2:01:59the bowling And I, I used to be a bowler way back when we lived
- 2:02:02in Chicago. They had leaked all over and I
- 2:02:04was pretty good back then. But then it's kind of like once
- 2:02:06you get out of it, I was. The same way, right?
- 2:02:10We played in leagues when I was a kid and I was pretty decent
- 2:02:13then, but I'm the worst bowler on the planet.
- 2:02:16I don't have the skills that I did when I was little, but but
- 2:02:19that's something in Chicago there was so many opportunities
- 2:02:22for bowling league wherever you went.
- 2:02:24And so as you move other places, those some of those same
- 2:02:28opportunities don't exist, right or you got to go a little bit
- 2:02:32further for them, but. Yeah, I literally right around
- 2:02:34the corner for me is where I grew up bowling Beacon Bowl and
- 2:02:37that's been. Gone for.
- 2:02:38Yeah, that's gone years now. Yeah.
- 2:02:40That was the Chippewa Home Center, you know, Yeah.
- 2:02:42When Ron Verash talks about his racing history, I kind of do the
- 2:02:47same thing with. The bowling, yeah.
- 2:02:50You guys got a moment? I can tell you one quick story.
- 2:02:53All right. So did you know back during the
- 2:02:56prohibition bowling was never 10 pins and the triangle that you
- 2:03:00see them now as how the pins are set up, it was originally called
- 2:03:049 pin bowling. So back in the prohibition,
- 2:03:08these guys would get their checks from unions, steel mills,
- 2:03:11whatever. They go to the bar and they
- 2:03:13gamble their whole check bowling.
- 2:03:16Well, they ended up making bowling illegal because it was a
- 2:03:20form of gambling. So to get around that, they
- 2:03:23added the 10th pin and made it into the triangular format that
- 2:03:28you see today. That's why technically there's
- 2:03:31many different forms of bowling, candle pin bowling, duck pin
- 2:03:34bowling. If you look up the correct term
- 2:03:37for my bowling, it's called 10 pin bowling and that's the
- 2:03:40reason why we call it 10 pin bowling.
- 2:03:42So just a little quick story. There, I appreciate that.
- 2:03:45That was cool. That's the.
- 2:03:45Stuff I like right there. I did not know that.
- 2:03:49There you go. And I like prohibition stuff
- 2:03:52like that era. I'm a history nerd.
- 2:03:53I know Bougie is a history nerd. So in fact, when I, you know,
- 2:03:56when I usually when I get off here, I go binge watch the Tom
- 2:04:00Hanks World War 2 stuff that's going on and it's on Hulu.
- 2:04:04You know, I haven't recorded all that, but you know, I like
- 2:04:08watching that kind of stuff. I mean, I'm, I'm watching
- 2:04:10History Channel things all the time, but I, they don't have
- 2:04:13things like that for bowling or I haven't found it yet, you
- 2:04:16know, but they do have like sports kind of things like.
- 2:04:20There's the P Weber documentary. You can watch that.
- 2:04:23That's a. Lot of fun.
- 2:04:25But yeah, so that's pretty cool. See how 10 Pen came in and
- 2:04:29that's where if you come to super Shoot, you'll have to try
- 2:04:31our bowling. Yeah, there you go.
- 2:04:33You take a bowling ball and you see if you can get it around the
- 2:04:37track the furthest you roll it. And I had so one of my bowling
- 2:04:41videos. I didn't get any last year
- 2:04:43because I was in the sling. I fell really hard on the track,
- 2:04:45and not because I was drunk or anything, but because I was
- 2:04:48trying to save a GoPro camera. No, I wish I had a damn good I
- 2:04:53fell in front of all the front wheel drives.
- 2:04:54It couldn't be the Crown Victor. There were like kind of, I mean,
- 2:04:56it had to be the 200 freaking front wheel drives that ready to
- 2:04:59practice that I fell in front of.
- 2:05:01Including all the people who come with front wheel drives.
- 2:05:04Oh Jesus, all of them, all of them right on the front stretch,
- 2:05:07right there, splat on the front stretch.
- 2:05:09I was bloody all over. Freddy Krueger would have been
- 2:05:12super jealous. I ended up in a sling at some
- 2:05:14point because you know, the adrenaline rush that like I got
- 2:05:18up, get up, get up, get off this ground, get off this ground.
- 2:05:20Go pros are OK every OK, go put you know, I I had 15 minutes to
- 2:05:24mount them on the wall around the track and I tried to be a
- 2:05:27superhero on my scooter and I super bit it and which Andy
- 2:05:31Bozell told me I'd be fine and you know, everybody follows and
- 2:05:33all the things. So I learned one of those many
- 2:05:35lessons from Andy Bozell. But but that's where, Yeah, but
- 2:05:40we have bowling. So I didn't get any pictures
- 2:05:42last or videos last year. But the year before when we
- 2:05:44first did it, the Kenny had brought it to Super Shoe.
- 2:05:47It had like 5 million views. Dylan Stovall throwing a bowling
- 2:05:51ball. It went almost all the way
- 2:05:53around to our backstretch, like the second big sign on our
- 2:05:56backstretch. And he last year I sponsored it
- 2:06:01was top roll bowling and that and that they also put me in
- 2:06:04charge of it, which I'm like, OK, I can't pick up bowling
- 2:06:07balls now. I can't do any of that.
- 2:06:08So I luckily I had how people did feel slightly sorry for me.
- 2:06:11And then also like, what'd you do?
- 2:06:12Where do you want me to start? But anyways, roll a ball that
- 2:06:17had five like over 5 million views on you or on Facebook and
- 2:06:22Europe was the number one country you're.
- 2:06:28Probably thinking look at these Americans the.
- 2:06:31European mind can't comprehend the.
- 2:06:34New so the new Paris fire truck is super popular in Canada, Nova
- 2:06:38Scotia, Canada and British Columbia, Canada.
- 2:06:43That's had there's only two videos on my page that have had
- 2:06:45a country, not a state, a country that was the number one
- 2:06:49region. Facebook calls it regions was #1
- 2:06:53Europe for bowling at Super Shoe and then the new Paris fire
- 2:06:57truck in Canada for whatever reason.
- 2:07:01But there's a bunch of Canadian firefighters fighting over foam
- 2:07:03and why were we putting Don Dish soap in a fire truck and all
- 2:07:06these things? And I'm like, OK, they're
- 2:07:10literally fighting over Don Dish hope, but whatever.
- 2:07:14I wasn't going to stop him. And went to like 7 different
- 2:07:16firefighter groups. I would, I'm like, really like,
- 2:07:19I would have never thought. I would have thought, you know,
- 2:07:23school of bus, you know, race of doom school bus with pyro coming
- 2:07:27off of it would go like all over the place.
- 2:07:28Nope, fire truck and bowling. But but yeah, so so you'll have
- 2:07:33to try super if they do it again this year, which they probably
- 2:07:36will Super shoot bowling. So last year Sage Hannah's
- 2:07:42boyfriend ended up winning. Yep, ended up winning it.
- 2:07:46And there's two of them who are going back and forth.
- 2:07:48But in fairness, because I they put me in charge of the Super
- 2:07:53shoot bowling, but they didn't really give me help.
- 2:07:54So Cody Geyer ended up helping chase balls around the corner.
- 2:07:58Then Sages boyfriend was doing the same thing but then he
- 2:08:02didn't get the bowl and he's a bowler and he knows what he's
- 2:08:04doing so. And I grew up bowling youth.
- 2:08:06League together. So I know.
- 2:08:09So I convinced the everyone else who got a chance, well, I said,
- 2:08:12you know, in fairness, he hasn't had a chance to.
- 2:08:15And then he is back and forth for like 10-15 minutes.
- 2:08:19They were really good sports about it.
- 2:08:20Because again, it's about fun. I mean, again, at Super Shoe you
- 2:08:23go for the partying, the stories and all the things.
- 2:08:25And then there's racing that just so happens to be a part of
- 2:08:27the weekend, you know, but that's, it's those kind of
- 2:08:30things that were that were pretty fun about it.
- 2:08:32So you'll have to, if you get up to super shoot this year, that's
- 2:08:35usually on a that'll be on Friday night after all the heat
- 2:08:38races or no set Saturday, Saturday night after all the
- 2:08:41heat races, you'll have to try the Super shoot bowling because
- 2:08:44that all right, that'll be fun. It was like $3 a ball I think it
- 2:08:48was, or $2.00 a ball, I don't remember.
- 2:08:51Real quick to connect racing and bowling.
- 2:08:53Since you brought up Kane, I don't know if you knew this, but
- 2:08:55he has a twin sister, her dad. Well, their dad is a big Casey
- 2:09:01Kane fan and his sister's name is Casey.
- 2:09:04So, Casey? And Kane.
- 2:09:06Yeah. That's pretty awesome.
- 2:09:08Yeah. So, yeah, See, like I said, I
- 2:09:11grew up bowling with them too, and at Country Club and so,
- 2:09:15yeah, in Elkhart. So yeah, it's, yeah, a little
- 2:09:18fun, little insight actually. We got to race not this past
- 2:09:22weekend, but the weekend before. Kane got out in his car and
- 2:09:25everything and got to race that new pair.
- 2:09:26So that was true fun for him to do because he hasn't been in the
- 2:09:30car in a while, you know, before that.
- 2:09:32So and and the last time he was in the car, he got kind of got
- 2:09:35beat up a little bit. So he was a little worried about
- 2:09:38getting in the car and everything, but he he held his
- 2:09:40own and did all that. So by the ways, I mean, Cain's
- 2:09:42at, he's at New Paris, anywhere the Hannahs are, he's.
- 2:09:45Generally. So, but yeah, he got to race.
- 2:09:48So he not only got to work, but he got to race too.
- 2:09:51So, but yeah, so that was fun 'cause I talked to him before,
- 2:09:56he said, So what do you think? And then afterwards, what do you
- 2:09:58think, you know, oh, that's more reason to get back in the car
- 2:10:01more often. So.
- 2:10:02And he already paid for a pit pass.
- 2:10:04So bring a car with same price, literally same price, yeah.
- 2:10:08You get some money back at the end of the night, you bring a
- 2:10:10race. Car yeah, don't bring anything
- 2:10:12there's tires, all these things there's.
- 2:10:16AI know Lewis? I was actually at Springport or
- 2:10:20not Springport and Singer was telling me, I won't say the
- 2:10:23driver, but they're telling me the tires, $1200 for their
- 2:10:26tires. I went, I fell over.
- 2:10:29I'm like, wait, what? So I'm like, oh, that that's a
- 2:10:34lot. So for especially for an Outlaw
- 2:10:36front wheel drive, basically that's what they are because
- 2:10:39that was an Outlaw front wheel drive Outlaw.
- 2:10:40Compact, yeah. Yep.
- 2:10:42But but yeah, that was 12-12 hundred.
- 2:10:46I went, oh, I'm in the wrong business, but but yeah.
- 2:10:53So anyways, I know we kept you a little bit past, but I know we
- 2:10:55started late. So you know, if everyone
- 2:10:57joining, just to remind, I know you see Taylor's on the screen,
- 2:11:00but if you missed our earlier conversation, once we got
- 2:11:02through all the technical difficulties and everything, we
- 2:11:04did have Wayne Bunn from Hartford St.
- 2:11:06Way. So once we're done on the line,
- 2:11:08you can certainly go back. I do have to catch up on
- 2:11:10Spotify, actually. Dalton Irish, I was talking with
- 2:11:13him yesterday and then we've been talking with Taylor Haynes
- 2:11:16from N 42. But I was talking with Dalton
- 2:11:18yesterday at Spring. Or if I say Springport, I mean
- 2:11:20Slinger at Slinger now I have two s s in my head, right, But
- 2:11:25at Slinger and he's one of our Spotify listeners.
- 2:11:27And so he was telling me, you know, when he listens to it and
- 2:11:31everything. And so I was telling Bujo, I
- 2:11:33said, I don't know if I'm going to do the Thursday 1:00 just
- 2:11:35because by the time people by the time people watch a Thursday
- 2:11:38one, I might be outdated and because it's events for Friday,
- 2:11:42Saturday and Sunday. But you know, we do also have
- 2:11:45conversation on there too that we'll talk about different
- 2:11:47things. So they said I'll go back and
- 2:11:49upload all those because that was one thing I thought, well,
- 2:11:52it doesn't make sense to put the Thursday one on Spotify, but
- 2:11:55then and talk with him like I never put the Monday up there
- 2:11:57from last week. So I'm like, sorry Taylor, sorry
- 2:12:00New Paris. You know, I mean, we don't have
- 2:12:03tons of Spotify users right now, but I found a chart, a podcast
- 2:12:08chart that has like Top Motorsports Podcast and we're
- 2:12:11kind of going up the chart here a little.
- 2:12:14There we go. So if you listen on Spotify or
- 2:12:16anything, which is free to listen to on Spotify, even I
- 2:12:19think a Spotify account is free to make you give us like great
- 2:12:23reviews and all that or the show.
- 2:12:25We'll, we can continue kind of moving up the chart there.
- 2:12:28So we're, we were, if I, the one that I looked at and I only came
- 2:12:32across because of another podcast that I follow mentioned
- 2:12:35it, that they're on it. And so is women's Motorsports
- 2:12:38network. We have Melinda Russell on she's
- 2:12:39in the comfortably in the top 70.
- 2:12:42I think she's like 75 or whatever.
- 2:12:44She's top 100. So I looked at our numbers and
- 2:12:47we're we're moving up. So I'm like, nice.
- 2:12:49Let's keep. This going so if you watch on
- 2:12:52Spotify, you know definitely you know give good reviews and all
- 2:12:55that because that'll just keep moving us up the chart so and
- 2:12:58you. Don't have a on Spotify?
- 2:13:00You can hit the follow button as well too so you get notified
- 2:13:02when the new episodes are posted as.
- 2:13:04Soon as we get done here, boom, I'm going to do that.
- 2:13:06Yep, and I'll be uploading this one probably right away just so
- 2:13:09I don't forget about it. Although the new Paris Enduro is
- 2:13:12already up that was 451 laps, but few caution or few red
- 2:13:16flags. I'm like OK, this is going to be
- 2:13:18pretty easy to get through so so people can go watch that now
- 2:13:21that's all up all three out 3 1/2 hours I think is total video
- 2:13:25time. But or no, that doesn't sound
- 2:13:27right 3 something. But there was there was 8
- 2:13:31minutes of interview, like a few minutes of driver introductions.
- 2:13:35They did driver introductions. So when you put the whole thing
- 2:13:37together, it's longer than a three hour race, but plus my
- 2:13:41entrance is a minute so you know, it adds up and all that.
- 2:13:44But but again, Taylor, thank you so much for joining us.
- 2:13:48You know, on a Monday and you're central time.
- 2:13:51So you get to live a time that we've already lived.
- 2:13:53So with that before I forget, while you're on here, you get to
- 2:13:56be part of the all the show running because at the start of
- 2:13:59the show, Buju, we also forgot to remind everyone to throttle
- 2:14:02up with us on Thursday. Again, the technical
- 2:14:04difficulties were throwing me off because I was trying to
- 2:14:06manage the podcast and also get Wayne connected with us.
- 2:14:10But so you can throttle up with us this Thursday where we'll
- 2:14:14preview the upcoming weekend. Rain doesn't seem to be a big
- 2:14:16factor this weekend. So we'll actually have shows to
- 2:14:19talk about and obviously the V8 special.
- 2:14:22But then I know there's just a lot of different events going on
- 2:14:26all all over. It's autographed night at a lot
- 2:14:28of places, so. New Paris, That's where I'll be.
- 2:14:31Saturday. So you throttle up with us and
- 2:14:34then of course, you've been listening to the Monday Night
- 2:14:36Rewind presented by the National Compact Touring Series,
- 2:14:39Federated Auto Parts and ELH detailing.
- 2:14:42And with us, we've had Taylor Haynes from M40 Speedway talking
- 2:14:45with us. And then like I said, Wayne
- 2:14:47Bunn, you can go back once we're off live to to watch if you miss
- 2:14:51his phone and interview our first phone and interview, we
- 2:14:53figured out it'll work too. So other than that, Boozoo, were
- 2:14:57there any other questions that you had for Taylor that we
- 2:15:00missed out on? No, Sir, I haven't the chat all
- 2:15:03night's been Taylor's the main. We love Taylor.
- 2:15:05Taylor gets it done. So I wanted to make sure you get
- 2:15:07your flowers from the chat here, Taylor.
- 2:15:08I enjoyed this conversation quite a bit.
- 2:15:10I realized we've we've talked at the racetrack for 5-6 years or
- 2:15:13whatever it is and I don't know a lot about you.
- 2:15:15So I I enjoyed tonight. It was really good.
- 2:15:17You're a great guest. So thanks for coming on Taylor.
- 2:15:19That's all I hey. Thank you guys for having me, I
- 2:15:21loved it and this is so far like a great highlight in my life
- 2:15:26when it connects to racing so. Thank you.
- 2:15:29Well, thank you. Well, yeah, definitely let all
- 2:15:31your family know because I, I don't know if they shared it out
- 2:15:34when I post it, but I know when I did your short track
- 2:15:36spotlight, I'm like who's all sharing this?
- 2:15:39And so you know a lot of names that I don't I don't see often,
- 2:15:43right. But definitely let everyone know
- 2:15:44you're on so they can go back and watch it.
- 2:15:46And if they don't have Facebook, they can get it on YouTube.
- 2:15:48And if they don't want to go to YouTube, like I said, I'll
- 2:15:51probably be putting it on Spotify tonight just so I don't
- 2:15:53forget because sometimes I just forget like last week I was
- 2:15:58super busy. I that's the most lapsed then
- 2:16:00until New Paris is Enduro that I'd ever edited.
- 2:16:04I mean New Paris is Enduro was the equivalent to three race
- 2:16:07programs last week. Oh wow.
- 2:16:09Yeah, so I went full Hartford night, full Kalamazoo night,
- 2:16:14full in New Paris night, plus the night of destruction.
- 2:16:18Then Duro from Saturday trumped all that.
- 2:16:21So that's the most in one weekend.
- 2:16:25And new pair said hold my hold my Amish fried chicken well up.
- 2:16:31Yeah. And so they they cleared, they
- 2:16:33cleared the house on Saturday. But again, incredible.
- 2:16:36And Duro, for those who missed it, obviously the day of
- 2:16:38reckonings where you'll get to see Taylor if you haven't done
- 2:16:40those yet. And there's a lot of people who
- 2:16:41haven't yet. Numbers went up.
- 2:16:43So let's keep getting those numbers up.
- 2:16:45The the Russell's are being super creative.
- 2:16:47They're doing their own thing, which is what's so fun is that
- 2:16:50they're not trying to be like other tracks.
- 2:16:52They're. Factory 4 double features were
- 2:16:54awesome on Saturday. I wanted to add that too.
- 2:16:56Those were fun, Yeah, on. That factory four group there
- 2:17:00again, I think you know, we have who do we have on that?
- 2:17:03We're talk about the factory Fords, but but you know, they've
- 2:17:06come around and and that's something Hartford had the bar,
- 2:17:10you know, Hartford had the most out of everybody.
- 2:17:12They figured it out where all the other tracks were struggling
- 2:17:15to get them and there's just weren't a bunch.
- 2:17:17I mean, people were trying to buy them, you couldn't find
- 2:17:19them, kind of build them, kind of do all that, you know.
- 2:17:23But then we start with the top row Triple Crown on April 11th
- 2:17:27at Russell's and we had that was the most at that time.
- 2:17:30And then I think it was what, 2 weeks later on season opening,
- 2:17:32we crushed that record and then held, you know, have held all
- 2:17:37season. So again, that that always tells
- 2:17:40me you're doing something right if you're holding and they keep
- 2:17:44coming back. But you know, it's also the
- 2:17:46advantage. There's only two tracks that are
- 2:17:48doing them weekly and so there's not a lot of places to go.
- 2:17:52But, but literally like Hartford's on its stretch where
- 2:17:55it has a couple nights off because of fares, they don't go
- 2:17:57head to head with fares or anything that if you race a
- 2:18:00Crown Victoria at M40 and you want it, like Ronnie Holloway
- 2:18:03has done this. He went to dirt last year to try
- 2:18:06it. Like take your Crown Vic and go
- 2:18:07over to Hartford on a Friday night.
- 2:18:09Or if you race at Hartford and you don't have anywhere to go
- 2:18:11for a couple weeks, do a few things.
- 2:18:13If you can fit the rules to go to M40 and give him 40 a shot
- 2:18:17and you know, then the car doesn't have to sit in the
- 2:18:19garage for a couple weeks. And I know there's some Michigan
- 2:18:21tracks, dirt tracks that do run Crown Vics, but for a lot of
- 2:18:24them, and 40 would be the closest, rather than driving a
- 2:18:27couple hours away, drive 50 minutes away.
- 2:18:30So, so again, I know seeing that and seeing the car counts at at
- 2:18:34M40 has been pretty cool too. Because as we've said on this
- 2:18:37show, as they've done in the short track spotlights, it was
- 2:18:40literally a track with the, with the Grim Reaper just standing
- 2:18:44right there getting ready to, you know, Abracadabra, you know,
- 2:18:47blow the house down. And you know, they July 23rd, I
- 2:18:51think was the date, something like that. 2023 they've been
- 2:18:54able to or 2020. Yeah, it's 2023.
- 2:18:58You know, they've been able to change all the fortunes around.
- 2:19:01So again, I always tell people, because I know everyone's
- 2:19:05sandbox a little different, like you might not like have the
- 2:19:07sandbox all the time, but at least it's a track that's open.
- 2:19:10And if anything, we all embrace that at least it's a track
- 2:19:12that's open. But other than I know who, was
- 2:19:16it the other day that stirred up some controversy because they
- 2:19:18had a picture of South Bend as a dirt track?
- 2:19:21Don't get me started on that. Don't get me fired up on that.
- 2:19:24Lewis I think it's next tremie who shared it and as a page, but
- 2:19:29then someone said what other track would you think an M40?
- 2:19:32And I'm going to tell you an M40 was for sale.
- 2:19:34Obviously I don't have the money to buy it, so I can't do it.
- 2:19:37But I made AI made a post in it. It got people so furious with
- 2:19:41me. But I'm like, I think M40 would
- 2:19:43be a really, really, really good dirt track just and I'm just
- 2:19:49picture the a la Sprint cars on it.
- 2:19:51You know, just that's all you need to do.
- 2:19:53Just picture that and dirt lane models slinging dirt around
- 2:19:56there. Booze you get over yourself.
- 2:20:00You can keep plugging on my page.
- 2:20:02You remember that? You know, I will say one thing
- 2:20:05about M40 is that track is very unique, and I feel like that's
- 2:20:10really the equalizer for a lot of the racing.
- 2:20:12I mean, it comes back to who's the best pilot at that point.
- 2:20:16I mean, setups can only help you so far.
- 2:20:18You still got to drive the thing.
- 2:20:19So yeah. Especially Turn 3, like you can
- 2:20:24tell God watching the Ohio Wheelman there I was telling
- 2:20:27their photographer and everything I said we'll figure
- 2:20:30out really quick who's raced here and who hasn't.
- 2:20:34Hot laps that bump. Is I can you, you even see it
- 2:20:38even like with the crown VIX when they decide to go 3 wide
- 2:20:41and they can hold three wide for like 2 laps.
- 2:20:44Good Lord. When they hit the when they hit
- 2:20:46the little bump, it just it's amazing what that little bit can
- 2:20:50do to the cars set up. It's just surprising.
- 2:20:54Yeah, Speaking of set up, Buju, what do you think about a dirt
- 2:20:57track in South Bend? Hey, teach their own you.
- 2:21:05Have material for your next episode on Sundays?
- 2:21:08There you go, I. Should.
- 2:21:09Yeah, that's a. That's a good point.
- 2:21:12He's writing a note. Well, let's ask that though.
- 2:21:14Like is there, is there? My forehead vein popping out
- 2:21:17yet? Yep, it sure is.
- 2:21:20Well, do you remember? When Berlin did it so way back,
- 2:21:23Berlin used to put dirt on Berlin for like a race.
- 2:21:27They were. They raced World of Outlaws
- 2:21:28there, if I if I remember his. World of Outlaws.
- 2:21:31Yeah, they put dirt on the Berlin.
- 2:21:33And so that kind of got people thinking because that was well
- 2:21:36before Bristol put dirt on. But that might have been when
- 2:21:39Bristol did dirt the first time. Because that was.
- 2:21:41Kind of like early 2000s. But, you know, it's one of those
- 2:21:46that, you know, people talk about.
- 2:21:48There's so many asphalt tracks in the area and Hartford and
- 2:21:51Butler kind of live in the dirt land.
- 2:21:53There's just not enough dirt. So when you look at the car
- 2:21:56counts, why would I build a dirt car?
- 2:21:58I hear you. I get I I hear what you're
- 2:22:01saying about dirt tracks. I get the I'm not, and I'm not
- 2:22:03bashing dirt tracks. I just think the asphalt tracks
- 2:22:06are asphalt tracks for reasons. So maybe let's.
- 2:22:08But remember, I'm trying. To turn them into.
- 2:22:10Dirt used to be dirt. They put asphalt on top of the
- 2:22:14dirt. Yeah, in the 1950s.
- 2:22:19Back to our roof, like Montville started as dirt track, new pair
- 2:22:22started as dirt track, Callum Zoo started as dirt track, I
- 2:22:25think Galesburg started as dirt track but I could be wrong on.
- 2:22:28Galesburg, most of them did start start as dirt tracks.
- 2:22:30That's and then they paved them. Because it's.
- 2:22:32Better. Oh Lord.
- 2:22:38This is great, right? You know, I don't know though,
- 2:22:40like you have to give it. You have to give it something
- 2:22:42out. If you watch the World of
- 2:22:44Outlaws at at M40 on a dirt track, you have to admit that in
- 2:22:50a different time, like Back to the future, like go back to the
- 2:22:53future and change course of history, that that would be a
- 2:22:57fun dirt. Track.
- 2:22:58Sure, I'll give you M40. Leave the other one alone.
- 2:23:05But but OK, let's ask this just because we're on topic and since
- 2:23:09you both have routes to South Bend if it kept it alive.
- 2:23:14I I don't think you'd have to widen the bottom so much and the
- 2:23:16top would be so dominant it wouldn't work.
- 2:23:18I was going to say if. The widen the bottom it would be
- 2:23:211/5 mile if that. I don't think it would work.
- 2:23:25You know there was a race. Have you been to Plymouth Dirt
- 2:23:27Track in Wisconsin? Fifth mile there that they did
- 2:23:30good. Sure, you know, going with what
- 2:23:33Boudre was saying. You know, I'm by all means I'm
- 2:23:35not opposed to dirt dirts. Fun to watch you sack.
- 2:23:38I just watched the Flow racing, had a race rewind where they
- 2:23:44were doing the Ohio Speed week. That was just like a month ago
- 2:23:49or something like that. And I was like, wow, these burn
- 2:23:52cars are amazing. You know when I see a car go
- 2:23:54sideways, there's a yellow flag usually.
- 2:23:57So to see them kick it sideways and just maintain it, it was
- 2:24:01just amazing to watch. Like all forms of racing are fun
- 2:24:04to watch, but I agree with Buju. If you South Bend went dirt,
- 2:24:08hypothetically they'd have to do a lot of work because it's
- 2:24:11narrow. And also good luck selling the
- 2:24:14neighbors in the auction lot across the street on that too.
- 2:24:16Oh, they would be mad. Oh.
- 2:24:21Yeah, You know, there was a race at South Bend in 2019, I do
- 2:24:25believe it was the final running of the Jim Blunt Memorial.
- 2:24:30Had a whole bunch of super late models there.
- 2:24:32Tyler Rorick, one of the cleanest racers you'll ever meet
- 2:24:36his, That was when he had the white paint scheme.
- 2:24:39It was the first season I think he did the white with the red
- 2:24:42number that he won the victory. He he won the race and then
- 2:24:47pulled off the track. And I guarantee you both side of
- 2:24:50that, the tire of his body, I mean, had tire marks all over
- 2:24:54it. And I just it never really put
- 2:24:56into perspective how tight South Bend is.
- 2:25:00And even working the gate and getting a perfect view of the
- 2:25:02backstretch, I never really paid attention.
- 2:25:05Until you see him go side by side going into 3 and it's like,
- 2:25:09you know, like, oh Lord. Perfect little race track and I
- 2:25:14love it the way it is. I'm it's hypothetical.
- 2:25:19I'm not hear you. I got hypothetical.
- 2:25:25I had my hypothetical response to the hypothetical.
- 2:25:27Situation, you know if someone buys it for 2 million or
- 2:25:32whatever it is. Yeah.
- 2:25:33Listen, I don't got money to buy it.
- 2:25:34So I don't have any decision that I don't have any say in the
- 2:25:36matter. Do what you want I guess, but
- 2:25:38I'll have my opinion. It could be.
- 2:25:41It would be unique to see though.
- 2:25:43Sure, you know so data center or dirt track?
- 2:25:47Oh yeah, I'm with you on that for sure.
- 2:25:49But. So you always have compared to
- 2:25:51the most, whatever the social media determines, it's the most
- 2:25:55evil thing of that day. Obviously data tenders are the
- 2:25:57most evil thing right now. Few weeks, it'll be something
- 2:26:01else. Dollar generals were it for a
- 2:26:03while, but. Flock cameras are moving up the
- 2:26:05list. Oh yeah, they are.
- 2:26:08That would be a big surveillance area if they did that right.
- 2:26:10You know, although it is long highway there, but but yeah, no.
- 2:26:15So I saw that picture and I'm like, I don't pick.
- 2:26:18I don't I agree with you, booze you.
- 2:26:20I'm just busting your balls here.
- 2:26:21I know, I know, I know. But yeah.
- 2:26:25It worked. No, it did.
- 2:26:29I kind of proud of myself, but but that's where you know, I I
- 2:26:33agree. I don't think South Bend would
- 2:26:35be an ideal dirt track. You'd have to do quite a bit of
- 2:26:37different things with it Doesn't make it impossible again.
- 2:26:40Plymouth, WI. I thought the same thing going
- 2:26:42there when my brother introduced me.
- 2:26:44If you've never been there, Sheboygan County Fairgrounds,
- 2:26:47they have tailgating all the way around it basically because the
- 2:26:50track was put in after the homes, the, the track of 2005.
- 2:26:55And so all the homes have balconies and they, you can
- 2:26:58smell the brats on the grill. You can smell all the things and
- 2:27:01they embrace the track like their neighbors and they're out
- 2:27:03there watching the track from their and so.
- 2:27:07And it's the only dirt track that I'll eat food at because I
- 2:27:10know my food won't have dirt in it.
- 2:27:12They have covered like any fairground, it's covered
- 2:27:14grandstands and those grandstands are damn clean.
- 2:27:16Like you'd think you're at a dirt track spotless, not not
- 2:27:20dirt anywhere. I didn't leave with dirt on me.
- 2:27:23It was really nice. I've I'm like, oh, this is
- 2:27:26awesome. I went to a dirt track and I'm
- 2:27:28leaving like I wasn't at a dirt track, but but yeah, that so
- 2:27:33that's a fifth mile. And I thought the same thing.
- 2:27:35They had 20, what was it, 23 or 24 Sprint cars, four 10s start
- 2:27:42their feature. And I thought, I looked at my
- 2:27:44brother and I said, this is going to be wild.
- 2:27:46Nope, just packing all over tight little bowl ring.
- 2:27:50So if you've never been there, I would highly recommend just for
- 2:27:53the environment. Even if you don't like the
- 2:27:55racing, I think you'll like the racing.
- 2:27:56But even if you don't like the racing, just environment, seeing
- 2:27:59a neighborhood embrace its track, be a part of the track,
- 2:28:03celebrate the track, embrace it. Definitely go check it out just
- 2:28:08for that. Yeah, One of my goals is even
- 2:28:11though I'm a big asphalt guy, I, I got to get to El Doro.
- 2:28:15I, I have to go. I hear that is just unworldly on
- 2:28:20how popular that is, so I got to get there too.
- 2:28:22I name my dog after Taylor, it's that good.
- 2:28:25All right, there was actually a just a little documentary.
- 2:28:30I watch a lot of flow racing when I'm home.
- 2:28:33There was a documentary on there on the history of flow racing.
- 2:28:36I mean, not flow racing of Eldoro, and that was pretty cool
- 2:28:39too. So it's just I got to go.
- 2:28:42I got to get out more now. While that while it's almost
- 2:28:47time to turn left right. So you know, because this is our
- 2:28:50favorite part of the because I see it's almost 9:30.
- 2:28:52So I'm like oh, trying to definite time to get.
- 2:28:55Yeah, it's 8:30 my time, so. Don't brag, but but yeah,
- 2:28:59Eldora, that's one that I do want to get to too.
- 2:29:01But I thought that was, I thought that was interesting.
- 2:29:04So I don't know how we, oh, 'cause we're just talk about
- 2:29:06dirt in general. But but yeah.
- 2:29:09But before Buju has like emotional breakdown and, you
- 2:29:14know, has to go on one of his big Dave Lacreca style rants on
- 2:29:18his new podcast, Yes. On Sundays.
- 2:29:21We'll save him the trouble so he doesn't have to curl up in a
- 2:29:25ball. It won't happen, it won't
- 2:29:28happen, it can't happen. We'll take the emotional trauma
- 2:29:32of even the thought of it. Dirt South Bend isn't real.
- 2:29:35It can't hurt you. He's going to have a nightmare
- 2:29:39about it. He's going to wake up screaming.
- 2:29:44It is not a effing dirt track, but and he won't know why.
- 2:29:48He'll just wake up yelling at and protesting.
- 2:29:50But but anyways, it's almost time to turn La Fuju and go fast
- 2:29:54again. Taylor, thank you so much for
- 2:29:56joining us tonight because. We'll see you at the races.
- 2:30:00And Taylor, have fun. We'll see.
- 2:30:02Everybody. Thank you.
