- 0:07Speaker 1: Hello, everybody, Welcome to another edition of Cardinal Territory. Jim
- 0:11Speaker 1: Hayes next to Kyle Gibson and Lance Lynn Gentlemen. Hello.
- 0:16Speaker 1: I thought a good place to start this week would
- 0:19Speaker 1: be with our old friend Wilson Contreras. All right, so
- 0:23Speaker 1: he's had a big week. He hit a homer and
- 0:26Speaker 1: pimped a homer in historic fashion. I mean, just really
- 0:31Speaker 1: one for the record books. Right then he gets tossed
- 0:34Speaker 1: out of a game for some I think was ridiculous,
- 0:37Speaker 1: but he did the foe tap in his helmet walking
- 0:40Speaker 1: back to the dugout, gets tossed out of the game,
- 0:43Speaker 1: and then he gets into a fight with Kabali and
- 0:49Speaker 1: all the Nationals because after Kavali struck him out, he
- 0:54Speaker 1: said sit down, boy, and they went back and forth
- 0:58Speaker 1: verbally and and then Wilson got really mad through a helmet.
- 1:03Speaker 1: Myles Michael List got into the mix there, and I
- 1:06Speaker 1: think throw a punch or two. We'll have to check,
- 1:08Speaker 1: but everybody was kung fu fighting. We're now going to
- 1:11Speaker 1: wait to see if Wilson gets suspended. I thought we
- 1:15Speaker 1: on this episode kind of put out a little a
- 1:21Speaker 1: little lesson on how to understand Wilson Okay, So I'm
- 1:25Speaker 1: gonna start with you Lance, right. You know Wilson, he
- 1:28Speaker 1: was a teammate, one of those guys, in my opinion,
- 1:31Speaker 1: you hate him until he's a teammate, and then you
- 1:34Speaker 1: love Wilson Contreras. So just first tell us how best
- 1:39Speaker 1: to understand Wilson Contreras, who is a passionate man.
- 1:45Speaker 2: Wow.
- 1:45Speaker 3: So early on in his career he was on the Cubs,
- 1:50Speaker 3: which was the biggest foe you could have as a cardinal.
- 1:52Speaker 3: So I saw him as the enemy number one, and
- 1:56Speaker 3: then I also had him as a teammate. When he
- 2:00Speaker 3: is enemy number one. Uh, he plays that villain card
- 2:04Speaker 3: very well. He is not afraid of that villain card.
- 2:08Speaker 3: And as a teammate, I liked it. As an opponent,
- 2:14Speaker 3: I was like, this guy, here we go again. So
- 2:18Speaker 3: it is exactly what you think it's. Hey, when he's
- 2:21Speaker 3: on your side, you love him because you know his heart.
- 2:25Speaker 3: You know what he's about. He's about winning, and he's
- 2:27Speaker 3: about leaving it all on the field. Sometimes it gets
- 2:31Speaker 3: a little too much and that's when it over you know,
- 2:36Speaker 3: it explodes and he he uh, he can't. You know
- 2:39Speaker 3: that The anger and the emotion goes a little too high,
- 2:42Speaker 3: and it causes ejections and or blow ups that are
- 2:46Speaker 3: hard to uh control and will cause issues with the
- 2:50Speaker 3: other team. So I think you're seeing a little bit
- 2:52Speaker 3: of a hey, maybe not having the they're not having
- 2:55Speaker 3: the best season.
- 2:56Speaker 4: Uh.
- 2:57Speaker 3: He's also this kind of who he is and certain
- 3:00Speaker 3: things light him up, and when he gets lit up,
- 3:03Speaker 3: there's no stopping it until the fire finally burns out.
- 3:06Speaker 3: And I think this series with Washington is kind of
- 3:09Speaker 3: one of those things where you know, maybe we'll fizzle
- 3:11Speaker 3: out now that the series is over and he'll be
- 3:14Speaker 3: good to go again and then he'll regroup. But you know,
- 3:17Speaker 3: I think the worst time we saw him was in Chicago,
- 3:19Speaker 3: right when he wanted to go back to the Cubs,
- 3:21Speaker 3: and he just wants he just wants to prove everybody
- 3:24Speaker 3: that doubted him or has issues with him wrong, which
- 3:27Speaker 3: is a great way for him to play, but also
- 3:29Speaker 3: at times he might cause some issues. And as a
- 3:33Speaker 3: teammate I didn't have a problem with it. As opponent,
- 3:35Speaker 3: you're just like, all right, well, he's going to do something.
- 3:38Speaker 3: Just don't don't pay attention to it and try not
- 3:40Speaker 3: to let it become a thing.
- 3:43Speaker 1: How about you Kyle.
- 3:46Speaker 4: I thought Wilson was awesome as a teammate. There's not
- 3:49Speaker 4: a single perfect teammate out there, a perfect person out there,
- 3:51Speaker 4: so ithing for stuff like everybody else.
- 3:54Speaker 5: I disagree.
- 3:58Speaker 1: I did that with Telma.
- 4:00Speaker 5: You're close.
- 4:02Speaker 4: Uh, you know, I think that would be the thing
- 4:04Speaker 4: that it is important to remember, you know. I think
- 4:09Speaker 4: there was issues his first year in Saint Louis with
- 4:12Speaker 4: some of the catching and just you know, fitting into
- 4:14Speaker 4: the clubhouse and kind of getting used to being there.
- 4:17Speaker 4: So I mean, there's always things that happen and go on.
- 4:19Speaker 4: But he will fight his younger brother if he's playing
- 4:25Speaker 4: the Brewers, and he won't think twice about it, and
- 4:27Speaker 4: he will be very open in that locker room that
- 4:31Speaker 4: I am here for these guys next to me right here,
- 4:33Speaker 4: and you guys are my teammates and my brothers right now.
- 4:36Speaker 4: William is not, and in fact, he lets you know
- 4:41Speaker 4: I'm interested a little bit. I didn't see Miles throw punches.
- 4:44Speaker 4: I was really interested to see why he got ejected,
- 4:47Speaker 4: because in my mind, he went at William to Wilson
- 4:51Speaker 4: to try and cloone him down as a familiar face,
- 4:53Speaker 4: and I thought he was trying to like be a
- 4:56Speaker 4: little bit of the muscle. Miles is the big guy,
- 4:58Speaker 4: so I think he was trying to kind of calm
- 5:00Speaker 4: it down. I don't know what Miles was saying, so
- 5:03Speaker 4: maybe he wasn't. I also know that Miles, you know,
- 5:07Speaker 4: probably after seeing the context of the Homer pimp job,
- 5:10Speaker 4: with everything going on in Venezuela, I would think that
- 5:13Speaker 4: Miles probably understood that a little bit. I mean, Wilson
- 5:17Speaker 4: is emotional in the dougout after hitting that Homer because
- 5:19Speaker 4: of everything he's going through at the time with his
- 5:22Speaker 4: family and friends, you know, some possibly having fatal injuries
- 5:26Speaker 4: from the earthquake.
- 5:27Speaker 5: So there was a lot that went into that.
- 5:29Speaker 4: The thing that really kind of made sense for Wilson
- 5:33Speaker 4: because this is his personality. But when he ran so
- 5:38Speaker 4: close to Cavali, you could see on the video he
- 5:42Speaker 4: actually turned to the left to go toward him. Now,
- 5:46Speaker 4: is he going more directly to that awkwardly placed Fenway dugout? Yes,
- 5:50Speaker 4: the Fenway dougouts are way down the line, so yes,
- 5:53Speaker 4: when he veered to the left, he was going to
- 5:54Speaker 4: the dugout. But Wilson also knows that he can go
- 5:58Speaker 4: behind that starting pitcher and let him go or he
- 6:01Speaker 4: can stay on his course and loop to the dug
- 6:03Speaker 4: out and not get close to Cavali Right there, that
- 6:06Speaker 4: was a Wilson kind of in the moment, I'm gonna
- 6:11Speaker 4: wear close to you on purpose.
- 6:12Speaker 5: Now I didn't see the end of the video. Somebody
- 6:14Speaker 5: said he turned around and.
- 6:15Speaker 4: Apologize and realized that, Hey, maybe I wasn't the best
- 6:18Speaker 4: thing to do. I don't know, but Cavali is not
- 6:21Speaker 4: gonna forget that. And as soe he hits his chance
- 6:24Speaker 4: to punch his ticket, he's gonna punch his ticket and
- 6:26Speaker 4: let him know. And I'm sure everybody on that National's
- 6:30Speaker 4: pitching staff, regardless of the Venezuela situation and regardless of
- 6:34Speaker 4: being correct or not and pimping the hole, everybody wanted.
- 6:37Speaker 5: To crack a strike.
- 6:37Speaker 4: And I Wilson, and that's kind of what you bring
- 6:40Speaker 4: on yourself if you're gonna be a little a little
- 6:42Speaker 4: bit of a villain. And I just think there's certain
- 6:46Speaker 4: times that you got to be able to dial back
- 6:49Speaker 4: your emotion and you got to be able to understand, Okay,
- 6:52Speaker 4: I'm gonna be really emotional when I do something good,
- 6:55Speaker 4: I've gotta let the guy on the other side celebrate
- 6:57Speaker 4: because I put a target on my back every now
- 6:59Speaker 4: and then by by how else shall I play?
- 7:03Speaker 1: So you bring up good points to the background with
- 7:06Speaker 1: what's going on in Venezuela. And also you know, running
- 7:10Speaker 1: across by where Cavalig was, which is the next thing
- 7:14Speaker 1: I wanted to talk about. There are dudes and don'ts
- 7:18Speaker 1: when it comes to the picture's mouth and leaving the
- 7:21Speaker 1: picture alone. Now, Lance, I don't know what your reaction
- 7:25Speaker 1: would have been. We don't have suppruder film on this
- 7:28Speaker 1: right to see who might have gotten close to you.
- 7:32Speaker 1: But if someone buzzed your tower like that, you would
- 7:35Speaker 1: not have appreciated it.
- 7:37Speaker 5: Nobody did that, gim nobody.
- 7:39Speaker 4: There was nobody gotta do that to Big Bear because honestly,
- 7:43Speaker 4: Big Bear wasn't gonna let that guy get off the
- 7:45Speaker 4: field without getting thrown out.
- 7:46Speaker 5: And that's good.
- 7:48Speaker 3: Yeah, I've never had anyone run that close to me
- 7:50Speaker 3: on the field. I think it was a It was
- 7:54Speaker 3: definitely a flex on Wilson's part, and he you know,
- 7:59Speaker 3: and he knows that he might have apologized because it
- 8:02Speaker 3: looked worse than he probably wanted it to. But it
- 8:05Speaker 3: was definitely a flex trying to flex on the young
- 8:08Speaker 3: kid out there, he's kind of dominating you. You know what,
- 8:12Speaker 3: you end up with thirteen strikeouts on the day or
- 8:14Speaker 3: something like that. So you're just trying to, you know,
- 8:16Speaker 3: anything you can to do to get an edge. Wilson's
- 8:18Speaker 3: unafraid of it. But Wilson's also one of those people
- 8:20Speaker 3: that if it's you and him walking in a straight
- 8:23Speaker 3: line and you're not on his team, he's not gonna
- 8:26Speaker 3: he's not gonna.
- 8:27Speaker 2: Move out away.
- 8:28Speaker 3: So uh so you knew, you know what's going on,
- 8:31Speaker 3: and you know the thing of it. So I mean
- 8:35Speaker 3: usually at the end of the inning, you give your
- 8:37Speaker 3: helmet to the guy and you walk across the field
- 8:39Speaker 3: and they bring your glove. At first, I don't know
- 8:41Speaker 3: if he's dhent or not. So it was, uh, it
- 8:45Speaker 3: was a tactic. There really no other way to say it.
- 8:47Speaker 3: And it was because it was a young kid and
- 8:50Speaker 3: he felt like doing it. So that's then that's why
- 8:53Speaker 3: what happened. What happened later. And if you have the
- 8:56Speaker 3: chance to punch someone out after the pimp job and
- 8:59Speaker 3: what he did, run off the you're gonna say something.
- 9:02Speaker 3: And for Wilson to chirp back was probably like, hey,
- 9:05Speaker 3: you got me. I did what I did yesterday, and
- 9:08Speaker 3: I did what I did today, and you got me
- 9:10Speaker 3: and say whatever you want, I'm gonna walk back to
- 9:11Speaker 3: the dugout now. So I would say that's my biggest
- 9:14Speaker 3: thing is like, hey, if you're going to try to
- 9:16Speaker 3: flex on someone and pimp job the day before, when
- 9:18Speaker 3: you get shut when they strike you out, take your medicine,
- 9:21Speaker 3: and go on back to the dugout. And That's where
- 9:23Speaker 3: I'm at on that.
- 9:26Speaker 1: So you guys know this.
- 9:27Speaker 2: I want to.
- 9:29Speaker 1: Talk about Wilson because he has a big heart and
- 9:32Speaker 1: I know that's why you guys like him. But if
- 9:34Speaker 1: you go back to the first time he went back
- 9:36Speaker 1: to Wrigley as a Cardinal, right, the Cardinals had talked
- 9:40Speaker 1: to him about being an outfielder, he had to go
- 9:43Speaker 1: back to Wriggly And he's a proud guy as a
- 9:46Speaker 1: catcher no longer, right, And I was there, met with
- 9:49Speaker 1: the media, said all the right things, and then he
- 9:53Speaker 1: had a fantastic series. Right, instead of being ticked off,
- 9:57Speaker 1: instead of worrying about me, he led his team and
- 10:00Speaker 1: had a really good series. Cole of again, you were teammates.
- 10:04Speaker 1: To me, this guy sometimes goes too far because he
- 10:09Speaker 1: plays with his heart.
- 10:12Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, I think that's kind of where.
- 10:16Speaker 4: That's kind of where it's it gets a little tough
- 10:18Speaker 4: if you want to be this even keel person. Right,
- 10:22Speaker 4: I've seen players who can play with emotion and get upset,
- 10:25Speaker 4: and I've seen players who can't and it makes them worse.
- 10:28Speaker 4: Whenever you get too emotional or play too much with
- 10:34Speaker 4: your fart and I mean I mean that in.
- 10:37Speaker 5: The best way possible.
- 10:38Speaker 4: But like, just just like you can play with positive
- 10:42Speaker 4: emotion glowing from my heart, you can be upset and
- 10:45Speaker 4: frustrated and have something hurt so deeply that it causes
- 10:49Speaker 4: you to play the other way. So to me, that
- 10:52Speaker 4: is that.
- 10:53Speaker 5: Can be the danger of letting your emotions kind of
- 10:56Speaker 5: take over.
- 10:56Speaker 4: But yeah, he's he is an emotional pass teammate and
- 11:01Speaker 4: he does he does care for the people around him,
- 11:05Speaker 4: and he plays.
- 11:06Speaker 5: Like that.
- 11:08Speaker 1: Lance. You sometimes will get wound up with memory serves.
- 11:11Speaker 1: And you were a guy that fed off your own emotion.
- 11:15Speaker 1: Was there ever a time you were like, Okay, I'm
- 11:17Speaker 1: too fired up, Maybe I gotta I gotta tone this
- 11:21Speaker 1: down a little bit, or was that something that you
- 11:24Speaker 1: were looking to to bring you to the next level.
- 11:28Speaker 3: I think it is. You have to know the right
- 11:31Speaker 3: time to let it out and be done with it
- 11:33Speaker 3: so you have the regroup. Like early on in my career,
- 11:37Speaker 3: they wanted me to show no emotion, and I felt
- 11:39Speaker 3: like I was borrowed up and I couldn't be myself
- 11:42Speaker 3: and it just made me angry all the time, especially
- 11:45Speaker 3: with everyone around me, because they wanted me to be
- 11:47Speaker 3: something that fit their mold right. So it's a fine
- 11:51Speaker 3: line where you got to let a guy be him
- 11:53Speaker 3: self and make sure he uses his energy, his you know,
- 11:59Speaker 3: his passion or you know whatever you want to call
- 12:01Speaker 3: it in the right light the right time, without you know,
- 12:05Speaker 3: stirring up stuff too bad. I think as my career
- 12:07Speaker 3: went on, I learned to, you know, use it at
- 12:10Speaker 3: the right time. But I also figured it out along
- 12:12Speaker 3: the way. It doesn't matter what you do. As long
- 12:15Speaker 3: as you play really well, they let you do it
- 12:17Speaker 3: the hell you want. So I think, uh, that's the
- 12:20Speaker 3: gist of it. As long as Wilson's hitting home runs
- 12:23Speaker 3: and you know, hitting two hundred and eighty with you
- 12:25Speaker 3: know whatever, he's going to hit doubles and home runs
- 12:27Speaker 3: and playing good, first people look the other way. But
- 12:30Speaker 3: when you're not doing well and this and that, or
- 12:32Speaker 3: it starts taking it away from that, then that's a problem.
- 12:35Speaker 3: But for me early on in my career, it actually
- 12:38Speaker 3: hindered me because of them wanting me to be the
- 12:42Speaker 3: a quote unquote a way that doesn't doesn't fit my
- 12:45Speaker 3: personality and doesn't let me be who I am on
- 12:47Speaker 3: the field. So you got to, you know, as an organization,
- 12:50Speaker 3: as a staff and all that, you got to figure
- 12:52Speaker 3: out the right line. It's like, hey, we want you
- 12:54Speaker 3: to show it a little bit. We want you to
- 12:55Speaker 3: do all these things, but also don't bring any negative
- 12:59Speaker 3: that if you if you can, don't bring the negative
- 13:01Speaker 3: on yourself and be prepared for people to slap back.
- 13:05Speaker 3: If you are going to show emotions, you got to
- 13:07Speaker 3: be able to take it on the other way too.
- 13:09Speaker 3: And that's what I learned along the way is hey,
- 13:11Speaker 3: I'm going to do what I do and I don't
- 13:12Speaker 3: really care what you do. And if you do something,
- 13:14Speaker 3: I'm not going to sit here and say, hey, that
- 13:17Speaker 3: hurt my feelings, don't ever do it again, because I
- 13:20Speaker 3: plan on hurting your failings the next time I see you.
- 13:22Speaker 3: And she already did yours, I'm going to do mine.
- 13:26Speaker 1: Hey, future podcasters, watch for this. This is a professionally
- 13:29Speaker 1: executed segue. Hey, you know what, there are a ton
- 13:32Speaker 1: of great things to do out there this summer ride.
- 13:35Speaker 1: We've got World Cup games, Major League Baseball. That's where
- 13:39Speaker 1: our friends at sea geek come into the picture. How
- 13:46Speaker 1: about that seat geek has seventy thousand different events listed,
- 13:51Speaker 1: sporting events, concerts, festivals, you name it, probably NASCAR, probably
- 13:55Speaker 1: races that I know Kyle like loves. And we have

- 14:15Speaker 1: Major League Baseball. Every purchase is guaranteed. Thank you, Steak Geek.
- 14:21Speaker 1: All right, You guys are pitchers, and sometimes pitchers don't
- 14:26Speaker 1: get run starting pitchers. Sometimes we'll go out and throw
- 14:30Speaker 1: six innings, seven innings and end up with a loss.
- 14:33Speaker 1: Michael McGreevey is kind of in that situation. Believe he's
- 14:37Speaker 1: in the top three for lack of run support. He's
- 14:40Speaker 1: putting together a tremendous season at a great outing. Last night,
- 14:44Speaker 1: Era drops to three point one two for the season
- 14:49Speaker 1: and he's what three and seven. He's got a bad record,
- 14:52Speaker 1: but he hadn't pitched like it. So Kyle, as a pitcher,
- 14:56Speaker 1: how do you compartmentalize that where you're just focused on
- 15:00Speaker 1: getting out and you don't let it wear on you?
- 15:03Speaker 1: Because I would think, and that's why I think mcgreevy's
- 15:05Speaker 1: really mature. I would think after a while, you start
- 15:08Speaker 1: putting pressure on yourself to be perfect because you know
- 15:11Speaker 1: you're not going to get a lot of runs behind you,
- 15:14Speaker 1: and that could impact you.
- 15:16Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, it is pretty impressive that he does
- 15:19Speaker 4: a good job of not letting it bug him at
- 15:22Speaker 4: a young age. It's definitely something that ipa media talk
- 15:26Speaker 4: to me about it. You know, when I was on
- 15:28Speaker 4: the lower end, you know, and I've had years where
- 15:31Speaker 4: I was both. I was probably top five one year
- 15:34Speaker 4: in Minnesota and bottom five you know, a couple other years.
- 15:37Speaker 4: So it's something that you're constantly telling the media that
- 15:42Speaker 4: you're not thinking about. But the more the media asked
- 15:46Speaker 4: me about it, and then sometimes you and your teammates
- 15:48Speaker 4: will come up and be like, hey, sorry, we couldn't
- 15:50Speaker 4: get you the runs today, And yeah, I mean it's
- 15:53Speaker 4: very difficult to push it out of your mind. But
- 15:56Speaker 4: at the same time, there's a chance and maybe he's
- 16:00Speaker 4: been a little bit unfortune faced up with the ace
- 16:03Speaker 4: of the other team, and that's gonna make it more difficult,
- 16:06Speaker 4: you know.
- 16:06Speaker 5: And sometimes you're just the guy.
- 16:09Speaker 4: That has those off days for the offense, you know,
- 16:12Speaker 4: the second half of the season, he could be the
- 16:14Speaker 4: guy that you know, they they find a spark and
- 16:17Speaker 4: all of a sudden, now they're scoring five and six
- 16:19Speaker 4: runs a game for him, and it'll even out. But
- 16:22Speaker 4: I think if you're in a good place mentally, then
- 16:27Speaker 4: you are able to whether that storm and understand. Okay,
- 16:31Speaker 4: my goal here is to give our team a chance
- 16:32Speaker 4: to win. Sometimes that means you gotta go observe runs,
- 16:35Speaker 4: and sometimes you can give up four and still get
- 16:38Speaker 4: a team a chance to win.
- 16:39Speaker 2: Right.
- 16:39Speaker 4: So if he can, if he can keep chugging along
- 16:41Speaker 4: and saying my goals, they get a team a chance
- 16:43Speaker 4: to win.
- 16:43Speaker 5: Here today, what does that look like?
- 16:45Speaker 4: Okay, two runs, even if we leave, if I leave
- 16:48Speaker 4: the game more down two to one, team has a
- 16:50Speaker 4: chance to win.
- 16:51Speaker 2: Right.
- 16:52Speaker 4: You know, the couginals are playing well, and I think
- 16:54Speaker 4: as long as the team keeps playing well and they're
- 16:57Speaker 4: winning games.
- 16:58Speaker 5: You know, the starting pitcher I have the least amount
- 17:00Speaker 5: of run support.
- 17:01Speaker 4: You know, it's always gonna you know, be a little upset,
- 17:04Speaker 4: but yeah, I think it'll be easier to run.
- 17:10Speaker 1: Let's be honest. Were there times where it just pissed
- 17:12Speaker 1: you off?
- 17:13Speaker 6: Be honest, no, I mean if you're throwing the ball, well,
- 17:19Speaker 6: you did your job right, And so I think that
- 17:22Speaker 6: the day and age of the win loss and everyone
- 17:25Speaker 6: sees it, it's like, yeah, it sucks to be what
- 17:26Speaker 6: three and.
- 17:27Speaker 3: Seven or whatever, and you're just like whatever. But when
- 17:31Speaker 3: Kyle I will come up, you were like, how good
- 17:33Speaker 3: you were was based off your win loss record, so
- 17:36Speaker 3: kind of hurdle. It's stung a little bit differently. Nowadays,
- 17:39Speaker 3: they don't even care about it. Like technically, your win
- 17:41Speaker 3: loss record doesn't matter when you go in arbitration. It
- 17:44Speaker 3: doesn't matter when you go into free agency. It's all
- 17:46Speaker 3: about you know, whatever underlying stats that that organization likes
- 17:50Speaker 3: the most, and they'll use that against you or for you.
- 17:53Speaker 3: I guess that it doesn't matter because they'll be like, oh,
- 17:55Speaker 3: you're under five hundred pictcher, we can't give you that
- 17:57Speaker 3: much that's the only thing that will hurting moving forward.
- 18:00Speaker 3: So that sucks for him because they will find that negative.
- 18:03Speaker 3: But yeah, when you're out there pitching, you're like, man,
- 18:06Speaker 3: would be nice to get four so I can get
- 18:07Speaker 3: a win. But when you start thinking like that, that's
- 18:10Speaker 3: when you give up five. To be honest with you,
- 18:12Speaker 3: and then you're like, well, there's there's baseball right. It's
- 18:15Speaker 3: gonna kick you right in the sack when you when
- 18:17Speaker 3: you start talking talking to it like that. So you
- 18:20Speaker 3: try to stay in your lane, do your job, make
- 18:23Speaker 3: sure you throw up quality starts or give your team
- 18:25Speaker 3: a chance to win. And then, as we always say, Jim,
- 18:28Speaker 3: it will even itself out. He could mess around and
- 18:30Speaker 3: have a four ERA the rest of the season and
- 18:33Speaker 3: win eleven of fifteen starts, and everyone's like, oh, you
- 18:37Speaker 3: into the season at would that be fourteen and fourteen
- 18:41Speaker 3: and seven? He had a great year, but his erah
- 18:43Speaker 3: would be almost a four. And then you're looking at, oh,
- 18:46Speaker 3: would you rather have a four ERA? Would you have
- 18:48Speaker 3: a three point one two? It's a it's a weird
- 18:50Speaker 3: it's a weird game like that, and so we'll see
- 18:53Speaker 3: where it ends at the end of the season. It
- 18:55Speaker 3: does suck when you're going through it, but it does
- 18:57Speaker 3: even itself out. And I always say this, and I
- 19:01Speaker 3: was told this by a veteran friend of mine that
- 19:04Speaker 3: told me, don't worry about runs if you don't like it,
- 19:06Speaker 3: don't give up any and you don't have to worry
- 19:08Speaker 3: about losing games. And how's a good point.
- 19:12Speaker 1: And baseball does always even out, right now? The Cardinals,
- 19:15Speaker 1: by the way, minus ten and rough and run differential,
- 19:18Speaker 1: five games over five hundred, minus ten. That's kind of weird.
- 19:22Speaker 1: We're gonna take a quick break here, and we're gonna
- 19:24Speaker 1: know well that you don't like that. It's bad. It's
- 19:26Speaker 1: beyond weird.
- 19:27Speaker 3: What No, that's not good.
- 19:30Speaker 1: It's not good. It's not good, but it's weird.
- 19:32Speaker 3: You're coming down to five hundred.
- 19:34Speaker 5: That's why we're creeven to five hundred.
- 19:37Speaker 1: Nobody's even dead. Quick break here, we're gonna come back
- 19:40Speaker 1: and talk about where the Cardinals are headed to next.
- 19:43Speaker 1: That's wriggly. You're watching Cardinal Territory on the Foul Territory Network.

- 20:48Speaker 1: So after the Cardinals finish up in Atlanta, they will
- 20:51Speaker 1: head to Wrigley. Right now, the Cubs are on fire.
- 20:54Speaker 1: They've won nine to ten. I think they've won five
- 20:56Speaker 1: in a row. Wriggly is a fun placed to cover games.
- 21:02Speaker 1: I imagine it's a fun place even as a visitor
- 21:05Speaker 1: to play there. I have your numbers Lamp's career. You
- 21:09Speaker 1: were two and four five point four to Oho at Wrigley.
- 21:12Speaker 1: Kyle was one on one with a three point one
- 21:15Speaker 1: five era Wrigley.
- 21:17Speaker 2: Kyle.
- 21:18Speaker 1: Did you enjoy your Wrigley experience as a major leaguer? Uh?
- 21:23Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean I think it's they're going in there
- 21:26Speaker 4: at a time right now where it's heating up, and
- 21:29Speaker 4: every ball that's a flyball toward the basket ends up
- 21:32Speaker 4: in the basket, are just over it. So it sure
- 21:34Speaker 4: seems like there's gonna be probably some run scored this weekend.
- 21:39Speaker 4: But I can only imagine that being in Wriglely over
- 21:43Speaker 4: July fourth, on a two hundred fiftieth anniversary of Independence Day,
- 21:47Speaker 4: and that's gonna be a fun weekend. So I did
- 21:51Speaker 4: enjoy my time in Wrigley. The people in the bleacher seats,
- 21:54Speaker 4: they show up early, so when you're warming up out there,
- 21:58Speaker 4: you hear a lot of any comments. I one guy
- 22:02Speaker 4: just basically followed me out one day when I was
- 22:03Speaker 4: warming up, yelling about how Michael Bush or somebody was
- 22:07Speaker 4: gonna take me deep and how I wasn't gonna make
- 22:10Speaker 4: it out of the second or third inning whatever.
- 22:14Speaker 5: You know, those are the.
- 22:14Speaker 4: Fun conversations you gotta have and and you get to
- 22:17Speaker 4: you know, bans are back and forth.
- 22:18Speaker 5: So it definitely did you make it out of it?
- 22:21Speaker 1: Did you make it out of the second or third?
- 22:23Speaker 2: Did you well?
- 22:25Speaker 4: I mean, I'm I think with the one and one
- 22:27Speaker 4: in the three point one four, I think I definitely
- 22:30Speaker 4: made it out. Okay, all right, that's that's I do
- 22:33Speaker 4: think I gave up probably a run in the first,
- 22:35Speaker 4: but I think I had a couple a couple of
- 22:38Speaker 4: good ones there. Obviously I was on the short end
- 22:39Speaker 4: of one side, but yeah, a couple of good ones.
- 22:41Speaker 1: As now, you guys are old enough to have been
- 22:45Speaker 1: at Wrigley before they did renovation one, renovation two, renovation three.
- 22:51Speaker 2: I mean there were tons. Yeah, he was in the
- 22:54Speaker 2: al he didn't get he didn't get it. Well, that's true.
- 22:59Speaker 2: But Lance, you were there when that Visitor's clubhouse was
- 23:02Speaker 2: tiny and awful and made every I mean there was
- 23:08Speaker 2: there was like this tarp where you could push it
- 23:10Speaker 2: back and see the fans coming in and you could
- 23:12Speaker 2: hear them screaming at you. What was it like back
- 23:15Speaker 2: in the Glory days before they fixed it up for
- 23:18Speaker 2: the visitors.
- 23:20Speaker 3: It's great, you know, yeah, that you had like usually
- 23:22Speaker 3: the A seed didn't work, so it was extremely warm.
- 23:27Speaker 3: There's nothing like eating your breakfast because it's mostly every
- 23:30Speaker 3: day game.
- 23:31Speaker 5: Let's be honest.
- 23:32Speaker 3: I wasn't a day game guy. So that's why I
- 23:34Speaker 3: Wrigly sucked for me. There's really no other way to
- 23:36Speaker 3: say it. I was notoriously bad in day games. Don't
- 23:39Speaker 3: know why. I just wasn't. Wasn't my forte and there's
- 23:43Speaker 3: really no other way to say it. I got a
- 23:45Speaker 3: little better of the older I got. But early on
- 23:47Speaker 3: in my career, which was most of my starts at Wrigley,
- 23:49Speaker 3: was when in day games were not my friend. But
- 23:52Speaker 3: there's nothing worse than like eating your breakfast when it's
- 23:55Speaker 3: one hundred degrees out and it's just hot. Everything's there,
- 23:59Speaker 3: you say, Jim, You're just sitting there at a table
- 24:01Speaker 3: and then a guy comes in and his cheeks, but
- 24:05Speaker 3: cheeks are like right here where you're trained to eat,
- 24:07Speaker 3: because that's yeah, and it's just like, man, what's going
- 24:11Speaker 3: on here? So you know you can hear the guy
- 24:13Speaker 3: taking a ship in the bathroom while you're trying to
- 24:15Speaker 3: eat like it's just there was it was just not
- 24:18Speaker 3: it there really no way to say it. It has
- 24:20Speaker 3: gotten better at the end. It was it was really nice,
- 24:24Speaker 3: definitely compared to what it was. But it it's tough
- 24:29Speaker 3: early on. You just had to get through it.
- 24:31Speaker 1: And one that was one curse word one curse you's
- 24:35Speaker 1: got to do with hash cheeks right here?
- 24:36Speaker 5: Bank all right, all right, it's fun.
- 24:41Speaker 1: Last thing we're going to ask each each of you.
- 24:43Speaker 1: So Cardinals finish up with Atlanta right then they got
- 24:48Speaker 1: the Cubs and then five against the Brewers. Let's face it,
- 24:54Speaker 1: they're not rolling right now, Kyle, how do you think
- 24:57Speaker 1: this is going to go? Can the can the Cardinals
- 24:59Speaker 1: whether the store and come out of this gauntlet? What
- 25:02Speaker 1: around the All Star break looking like they have a
- 25:05Speaker 1: shot at getting into the postseason, if that, if that's
- 25:08Speaker 1: the goal.
- 25:10Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean they're not rolling right now because they're
- 25:12Speaker 4: playing you know, some of the best teams in the league.
- 25:15Speaker 4: There's not many teams that that would be rolling in
- 25:19Speaker 4: the stretch that they're in right now. Then on top
- 25:21Speaker 4: of it, you know they are facing Atlanta here, who
- 25:25Speaker 4: you know, they're they're struggling here since the middle of June,
- 25:27Speaker 4: so hopefully they can get a series one there and
- 25:30Speaker 4: move out. But I mean, the Cubs are playing as
- 25:34Speaker 4: good as anybody, so I think that'll be a tough weekend.
- 25:37Speaker 4: You know, if they can get back home going five
- 25:39Speaker 4: hundred over this road trip, I think everybody would take
- 25:42Speaker 4: that if you know you're going into Atlanta and into
- 25:44Speaker 4: Chicago and you come back going three and three.
- 25:46Speaker 5: So I think it's hard to lose sight of that
- 25:49Speaker 5: at times.
- 25:50Speaker 4: But as a fan and as people who talk about
- 25:53Speaker 4: the team, we can't lose side of that. We talked
- 25:55Speaker 4: about this three or four weeks ago that this time
- 25:59Speaker 4: of the season and going into the All Star break
- 26:01Speaker 4: was going to be a really tough schedule.
- 26:04Speaker 5: They did what they needed to do at the beginning
- 26:06Speaker 5: of June.
- 26:06Speaker 4: In my mind, when they played teams that they should
- 26:09Speaker 4: have played well against and should have taken advantage of,
- 26:11Speaker 4: they played really well. What on that streak got what
- 26:14Speaker 4: were they at one point ten games over five hundred,
- 26:16Speaker 4: nine games over five hundred. Yes, they've crept back to
- 26:19Speaker 4: five hundred, there's still five over, but they've gone through
- 26:22Speaker 4: this tough part of the schedule, and at times, you know,
- 26:25Speaker 4: it's It's been pretty tough, but I think they can
- 26:28Speaker 4: get through this, and after the All Star break they
- 26:30Speaker 4: can look and say, Okay, now let's regroup here, let's
- 26:33Speaker 4: get through the end of July. Put some pressure on
- 26:35Speaker 4: the front office, make them see that we're still a really,
- 26:38Speaker 4: really good team with the chance to make the playoffs
- 26:40Speaker 4: and do some damage, and and just see what the
- 26:42Speaker 4: front office does. That's how I would look at if
- 26:45Speaker 4: I was on the water.
- 26:47Speaker 1: I'd like to see him beat up on the Atlanta tonight,
- 26:49Speaker 1: then the Cubs, and and put some pressure on the
- 26:53Speaker 1: Brewers who have been just sailing along. Lance Like the
- 26:56Speaker 1: Brewers don't even have to look behind them at this point.
- 27:00Speaker 3: Yeah, And I think when we started the year that
- 27:02Speaker 3: was kind of You're thinking Cubs and Brewers are kind
- 27:04Speaker 3: of going to run away with this division. Cubs are
- 27:07Speaker 3: starting to get hot, as you saw yesterday. I think
- 27:09Speaker 3: it's going to be a tough series up in Wrigley,
- 27:12Speaker 3: as you said, with a holiday weekend everything. I think
- 27:16Speaker 3: the main thing that people have to realize is it's
- 27:18Speaker 3: a young team that's not getting swept on road series.
- 27:21Speaker 3: So they just need to keep doing that. Figure out
- 27:23Speaker 3: how to win some series. Here and there and not
- 27:25Speaker 3: get swept. Be a five hundred team on the on
- 27:28Speaker 3: the road, and then at home be a plus you know,
- 27:31Speaker 3: if they can be plus five or whatever it is
- 27:33Speaker 3: that they need to be home. You look at the
- 27:34Speaker 3: end of the year, and we all talked about this,
- 27:37Speaker 3: if they're an eighty six eighty seven win team, they
- 27:41Speaker 3: had a great year, So I think everybody needs to,
- 27:44Speaker 3: you know, pump the brakes. But with a young team
- 27:46Speaker 3: not getting swept the way that they're not getting swept,
- 27:49Speaker 3: I think it's it's huge for them. And that's why
- 27:51Speaker 3: they are have stayed afloat as they have so far
- 27:54Speaker 3: this year because they played really well on the road
- 27:56Speaker 3: for a young team. So they need to keep doing
- 27:58Speaker 3: that by sneaking series out and then not getting swept
- 28:01Speaker 3: and then taking care of business winning series at home.
- 28:03Speaker 3: Next thing. You know, you look up at the end
- 28:05Speaker 3: of the year, you could be a ninety win team
- 28:06Speaker 3: and you're right there in the thick of the wild
- 28:08Speaker 3: card spot and that would be a huge, huge, huge
- 28:12Speaker 3: season for him and should get Ali the Coach of
- 28:14Speaker 3: the Year.
- 28:16Speaker 1: Gentlemen, have a great holiday weekend. Everyone watching Happy Fourth
- 28:20Speaker 1: of July. That's gonna do it for this edition.
- 28:25Speaker 3: Saw don't converse, Jim, I, don't hold the fire with
- 28:31Speaker 3: your hand whatever.
- 28:33Speaker 1: That's fireworks safety. That's a great point.
- 28:36Speaker 5: Be careful.
- 28:37Speaker 4: You're got a text almost every year from Brian Doser
- 28:40Speaker 4: and it's the video and backup Terry. I'm so looking
- 28:43Speaker 4: forward to the getting that video because it's just it's
- 28:45Speaker 4: almost like a tradition at this point.
- 28:47Speaker 5: Back up Terror.
- 28:52Speaker 1: That's gonna do it for us. Hopefully the next edition
- 28:54Speaker 1: of Cardinal Territory won't suck.
