Latest / Kenny Wallace Media / Talking Racing With Jeremy Clements | Lights Out With John Roberts
Transcript
- 0:10And welcome everybody to the Paint X Studio and lights out
- 0:13with Johnny Roberts. Want to welcome in driver Jeremy
- 0:16Clements. And Jeremy, you're coming off a
- 0:17fantastic weekend man. We're what we're all pulling for
- 0:21you really hard. And to see you come home with
- 0:22that top five finish, man, that goes a long way for you and the
- 0:27guys that work with you. When you have a season like this
- 0:30and you can get a result like this, it makes for a better week
- 0:32doesn't. It Oh man, it most certainly
- 0:35does. You know, we left Daytona
- 0:37earlier this year with a fast crash race car and leaving
- 0:43Talladega with a Chevy that finished top five in one piece,
- 0:47fastest lap stage points. It was a solid day for us and it
- 0:52exactly what we needed. So now we can fine tune on that
- 0:56Chevy to make it better for Daytona when we go back there in
- 0:59August instead of just trying to, you know, fix it and get it
- 1:03back to where it was. So yeah, it it makes everything
- 1:06better. But I'm telling you.
- 1:07So certainly a much needed top five.
- 1:11Yep, no doubt about that. And man, I don't care where
- 1:14you're racing or what your what what level of NASCAR you're in
- 1:17right now. These top five finishes are so
- 1:19hard to come about. But one thing you said Jeremy
- 1:21stuck with me and I thought it spoke volumes.
- 1:24You said one of the best things for you and your race team is to
- 1:27get out of there with a race car that is in intact.
- 1:30It is in in one piece. And I think that also speaks
- 1:34volumes because you're racing against guys that have so much
- 1:36more resources. So when you do that, it's got to
- 1:39be so much more. But we'll just satisfying to do
- 1:42that against the big dogs. Oh, it certainly is.
- 1:45I mean, and it costs a lot to to fix these these cars these days
- 1:50especially. So definitely would love to to
- 1:53bring them home clean and and it makes everything go smoother.
- 1:57Like the crew enjoys that as well.
- 2:00They don't have to work as hard to get them fixed back up.
- 2:03So yeah, it just makes our whole world go around better for us as
- 2:08a race team. So now you guys are heading to
- 2:11another fast racetrack in Texas. What are your preparations like
- 2:16for that, Jeremy? What are you hoping?
- 2:17For I'm really looking forward to John.
- 2:20I mean, Texas has been a great track for us.
- 2:23It's we've had a lot of speed there in the past.
- 2:26It's a fun mile and 1/2 it, it doesn't look good for us for
- 2:30practice and qualifying. So sure, I'm hoping all the the
- 2:33same work we've done and all the data lines up, but man, that's a
- 2:38that's a tricky track. You know, turn one and two
- 2:40really tight, got to let off the gas all the way, get on the
- 2:44brake a little bit and then 3 and 4 is really fast and you can
- 2:49carry a tunnel throttle through there and it's pretty bumpy.
- 2:52SO2 extremely different corners. If you're good in one, you're
- 2:58genuinely going to be not as good as in the other.
- 3:01So there's a little give and take there as well.
- 3:03But I really feel like then R51 Alliance driveway solution Chevy
- 3:07have a lot of speed. It's the same car that we
- 3:10brought to Atlanta and Vegas and it had a lot of speed there.
- 3:14So I, I can't wait. I just, I wish we could get
- 3:17practice of qualifying in Friday, but it looks like as of
- 3:20this moment on a Tuesday, the week of the of Friday, it's
- 3:25going to be a washout. Yeah, that is certainly
- 3:29unfortunate. But Jeremy, you guys work really
- 3:32hard to get this thing to the racetrack week in and week out.
- 3:35And I know there's a lot of people out there and, you know,
- 3:37conventional wisdom says, hey, I'd love to drive for this huge
- 3:41race team with all these resources.
- 3:44But I, I think there's also for, for you and the other guys that
- 3:47have these small family operations, when you guys are
- 3:51able to do something like what you did last week there, there's
- 3:54got to be another sense of satisfaction because of what you
- 3:57had to do and, and really what went into it.
- 3:59You guys are doing more with less resources.
- 4:03Yeah, I would say so. You know, we've we've made the
- 4:07move to to the a lot Haas Alliance factory team that we
- 4:13have now. So we're certainly got a lot
- 4:15better equipment than we've ever had and that's certainly gave us
- 4:20more speed to to be able to compete and be upfront and and
- 4:24man this it's O'Reilly auto parts series is extremely
- 4:28competitive. I mean, there are there are 25
- 4:30cars that can run top 10 every week.
- 4:34It is extremely competitive. So they're most, most teams, it
- 4:38seems like have have an alliance now with with a big team, a cup
- 4:42team or whatever. So it it is extremely
- 4:45competitive. So for us to to be still
- 4:48fighting each and every weekend and running up front, I think
- 4:52it's it's, it's really cool and it's definitely what I want to
- 4:56do as a driver and a team owner. So Jeremy, 541 races over 21
- 5:02years in the O'Reilly Series that that that's extremely
- 5:06impressive, first of all, for anybody to last that long in it.
- 5:09But you've seen from the driver's seat a lot of things,
- 5:13especially in this series, change.
- 5:15And I think like you mentioned just a moment ago, the
- 5:17competition level is so high, but also this series has an
- 5:21identity now of all of its own. It's no longer Cup light.
- 5:26How have you seen this whole thing change over that many
- 5:29years? Oh man, like you said, it's been
- 5:32a long time. I've seen a ton of change from
- 5:36the cars, the engines less little less power than we used
- 5:39to have a long time ago now, but we still have a good amount of
- 5:42power. But the cars, the car we, I
- 5:45think right now we have the best that probably the best we've
- 5:50ever had it as far as competition.
- 5:54Our TV partner, our we, we I sure do miss Xfinity having
- 6:00O'Reilly Auto parts as the title sponsor is is been great.
- 6:06I just feel like we've got a lot going for us right now.
- 6:09We put on amazing races. We've got a great group of
- 6:14drivers that are hungry and are wanting to make a name for
- 6:18themselves. And then you got, you know, old,
- 6:22old veterans like me and Justin Allgar that have been this
- 6:24Series A long, long time that can still get it done.
- 6:28And, and even guys like JJ Yaley, who who's been racing
- 6:31with us here recently come back in and out.
- 6:33So the the series is top notch. So I just, I just hope we don't
- 6:38mess with it. You know, we, we hear some
- 6:41rumors here and there with some things and I'm like, Oh, no,
- 6:43let's not do that. So I really like where the
- 6:47series is and, and it's, I think it's just, it's we're, we've
- 6:52only gone up since I've been in it.
- 6:55And I, I think having its own identity is, is what it needs.
- 6:58And it that's kind of besides, you know, we're running the old
- 7:03or the Cup cars they used to run and, and they just, they just
- 7:06put on great races. Yeah, and, and absolutely a week
- 7:10in and week out, I think of, you know, everybody wants to focus
- 7:14on the Cup Series, but man, the trucks and the O'Reilly Series,
- 7:17they put on such great competition.
- 7:19But Jeremy, you spoke about partners and how important that
- 7:22is. It's unlike any other sport
- 7:24where you do have to have those partners.
- 7:26I think it'll probably be easy for somebody to walk into that
- 7:29boardroom and say, hey, I drive for Joe Gibbs Racing O'Reilly
- 7:34series and and you know what we need sponsorship for, for you
- 7:38guys, Is it a little bit bigger of a cell to go in to talk to
- 7:41somebody about this and say, hey, what?
- 7:43We are a smaller organization, but you will get the bang for
- 7:46your buck out of a sponsorship. We certainly try.
- 7:50I mean it's, it's a tough, it can be a tough sale, but there's
- 7:54been a lot of partners come through other partners and you
- 7:58know, our deal is a lot smaller than a, than a big team like a
- 8:02Joe Gibbs race, some type. So I feel like it's a handshake
- 8:05deal. It's a little easier deal.
- 8:07I mean, so it and we get we let them have access they probably
- 8:11wouldn't have with the, with the other teams as well.
- 8:14And we have a good time, man. We we're, we just we're fun.
- 8:18We like to have fun after the race, before the race.
- 8:22And so it makes it all go around and it, it's, it's a little
- 8:26easier to sell, I feel like then then maybe trying to get the,
- 8:30the big buck from for a big team to race.
- 8:33We can definitely race a lot less than a a big team races,
- 8:38that's for sure. So, Jeremy, when you were
- 8:41growing up, you were in a racing family.
- 8:43When did you get bitten by this racing bug?
- 8:45Was it something that was in you from the start?
- 8:48Oh heck yeah. I mean, I was driving carts in
- 8:53my in my parents yard, tearing up the yard at 3:00 and 4:00
- 8:59five years old. And then just in the shop in our
- 9:02race shop with my grandfather Crawford Clements, who was a
- 9:06crew chief in the 50s and 60s with with his brother Lewis.
- 9:10And they won. Lewis won the championship with
- 9:13Rex White 1960. Crawford won many races with AJ
- 9:19Foy. Just so many amazing drivers
- 9:24they work with. So they they put me in the shop
- 9:29and I would just mess with things and drive or hop in the
- 9:33cars and I. So yeah, I was a bit very early
- 9:36and wanted to do nothing but race and then by 7 years old was
- 9:40given a racing go Kart and taken to Buck Creek Speedway in
- 9:44Cheston, South Carolina and started racing.
- 9:47And from there on, man, it was just all I wanted to do and all
- 9:49I've ever done. I think that's such a great
- 9:52aspect about racing. I think sometimes, you know,
- 9:55we'll hear about it was the lose in baseball and it was the James
- 10:00family in basketball that it was just so big that there was a
- 10:05father and son competing in a Major League sport.
- 10:07But we see it shoot Jeremy almost every, well, not almost
- 10:11every weekend, but we see this a lot that father and son are
- 10:14competing, brothers are competing.
- 10:16I just really love the family aspect of racing.
- 10:20I do too. It's, you know, my, my sister
- 10:24works on my team. My father Tony still goes to
- 10:27each and every race as he still runs Clements racing in his
- 10:32along with his brother Glenn Clements.
- 10:34And they build phenomenal dirt, light metal engines, the best in
- 10:37the country. So, yeah, we the Clement, the
- 10:41Clements name has been in racing a long, long time and just hope
- 10:46to continue and continue that way.
- 10:50My nephew Luke Clements is racing now too.
- 10:53He's he's 22 racing, racing crate late models on dirt, doing
- 10:58really well, winning races each and every week.
- 11:00So yeah, I mean, we're, we're racers.
- 11:02And I've been blessed, John. It's all I've ever wanted to do
- 11:07and it's all I've ever done to, to make a living.
- 11:09So I I've definitely been blessed to to do what I want to
- 11:13do. Yeah, I know exactly what you're
- 11:15talking about, Sir, because there's a lot of us that people
- 11:18had the same thing on that. Jeremy, what's a week like for
- 11:21you? You mentioned something about
- 11:22doing some SIM work and I think a lot of people have a
- 11:25misunderstanding about the race car driver.
- 11:28It's not just about racing on Saturdays.
- 11:31You guys have a much more than a full time job.
- 11:35Well, yeah, every day is different for me.
- 11:37There's no set, set schedule I we had yeah, we have Sam each
- 11:42and every week, roughly. We go to the shop, make sure
- 11:46everything's going the right way there.
- 11:49Yeah, stay on the phone, e-mail and calling our partners, trying
- 11:54to find new ones, getting suits, hats, shirts ordered, getting
- 11:59the cars designed, talking to pit crew, I mean, you name it.
- 12:03Paying bills, it's kind of everything it takes to to do it,
- 12:08making sure the travel's done for our pit crew and our Rd.
- 12:14crew. So I kind of got my hand in more
- 12:18than I would probably want to, to be honest, but it is what it
- 12:22takes to run this team. So Jeremy, there was some shake
- 12:28UPS recently in the upper level of NASCAR right now.
- 12:32And I think over the past couple of years there's well, there,
- 12:35well, there's been a lot of off track stuff that has gone on.
- 12:38But you're one of the drivers that's out there.
- 12:39You're one of the faces of this sport.
- 12:42I see something a little bit different when we're yeah, we
- 12:45don't go to every race these days, but we get to go to a lot
- 12:47of races. I I don't think the excitement
- 12:50over racing amongst the fans has gone anywhere.
- 12:54I think, yeah, but maybe TV ratings are down here and there,
- 12:56maybe attendance is down. But we see these pack
- 12:58grandstands at Talladega and you see there are pairs of eyes on
- 13:03this thing. I, I think the sport is in a
- 13:05fantastic place right now, but I think you're in a better
- 13:08position to to tell that from your perspective.
- 13:11Where are we as a body? I feel like we're in a in a
- 13:17really good spot. I mean, obviously there's always
- 13:20things we can do better, but I know the love for the sport is
- 13:24out there. I see it each and every weekend.
- 13:26People are coming to these races, they love NASCAR racing.
- 13:31I love to give people the opportunity to come and
- 13:35experience it first hand, especially, especially if
- 13:38they've never been, to give them that glimpse into our sport on
- 13:44that level that they would never get.
- 13:46It's it's exciting for me to do that.
- 13:48So I love to try to do that. And so, yeah, I mean, with the
- 13:53way the economy is currently with, with our fuel prices,
- 13:57unfortunately, and just the cost of other things, I think that
- 14:01that hurts it. But yeah, people can afford it.
- 14:04They're going to come out and and watch what they love.
- 14:07And, and Talladega look like it was packed to me as far as all
- 14:12the motor homes and the camping there and all the people there
- 14:15on the Boulevard. Everything looked pretty good to
- 14:19me. So, yeah, NASCAR is a tough and
- 14:23they they can't ever do everything just right.
- 14:25Of course, us as competitors are always going to be, why are we
- 14:30doing this? And then the fans are going to
- 14:31be, why are they doing that? So they got a tough job.
- 14:34And I don't know. I don't, I wouldn't want to ever
- 14:38be any part of that, to be honest with you.
- 14:40I'm a racer, never had to worry about the things like that, so I
- 14:44just try to worry about how to go faster and put a good product
- 14:49on for our partners. But yeah, just I think our
- 14:52sport's in a good spot, but definitely always ways to make
- 14:55it better. So geographically, yeah.
- 14:58As a Spartanburg guy, how much time, if, if, if any, did you
- 15:02spend at Greenville Pickens? The, the little bit of time when
- 15:06I, I was in Spartanburg, we, we went down there on several
- 15:09different occasions. What a classic old race track.
- 15:13And I think now, Jeremy, we, we better never say never when it
- 15:16comes to getting one of these race tracks back.
- 15:19What What do you know about what's going on at Greenville
- 15:21Pickens right now? Yeah, I never raced there myself
- 15:25actually. You know, I, I grew up a dirt
- 15:27guy and my first race was on asphalt was at Talladega in ARCA
- 15:35car. So I never raced Greenwell
- 15:38Pickens, but I know it's historic.
- 15:39I've been there at a test or two before.
- 15:43I've actually never even driven it.
- 15:44So I know it's a great, great track and would love to see it
- 15:50thrive and it stay in business and out there.
- 15:54But yeah, as of right now, I know same.
- 15:58It seems like it's a it's a tall task, but hopefully someone
- 16:02makes it happen. And and that's that's really all
- 16:05I know. You know, it's it's saying
- 16:06there's so many rumors out there.
- 16:08You see, I don't know what to believe exactly, but hopefully
- 16:11somebody can get it that'll love it that that can afford it and
- 16:14make it and make it happen. I know Dale Junior's said he
- 16:18would love to bring the cars tour there.
- 16:19So somebody will just get it. I think it would thrive.
- 16:24Yeah, I believe so. And when it comes to reviving
- 16:27some of those old race tracks right now, we're we're sitting
- 16:29right here, Jeremy, we're right down the road from the Nashville
- 16:32Fairgrounds. And I would love to see that
- 16:34happen. But I think also what we touched
- 16:37on it just briefly with, with the new leadership that is in
- 16:40NASCAR right now, I think there's the opportunity for the
- 16:44innovation. I think again, people have
- 16:47always talked about that, you know, when on Sunday, sell on
- 16:51Monday, that's still around there.
- 16:54But the association with the fan and the love of the automobile,
- 16:58I think that's just never gone away.
- 17:01No, it certainly hasn't. You know, Chevy has these
- 17:04meetings and they, they talk about all the cars that they're
- 17:08they're making and selling and they're in racing because like
- 17:12you just said, to sell cars. So yeah, you, you're right.
- 17:15People love automobiles. And then I love I'll, I'll tell
- 17:19you what, John, I love racing Chevy.
- 17:21So I'm glad that we have manufacturers that want to be in
- 17:26NASCAR and they've been there so long and done so much for the
- 17:29sport and the teams and the competitors to make it happen.
- 17:33So I'm very grateful as a Chevy driver what they do and I see
- 17:37what the other manufacturers do and I I think it'd be good to
- 17:41even have him even more in there.
- 17:43Obviously we saw Dodge step back into the Truck Series and
- 17:48looking into coming the Cup series, I guess is what I hear.
- 17:52So I think that's nothing but good.
- 17:55So Jeremy, I almost hate to go here because it's it, it's
- 17:58almost, it's almost a stupid debate, but it rears his ugly
- 18:02head every once in a while When a guy like Stephen A Smith says
- 18:05that NASCAR drivers aren't athletes, it kind of reminds me
- 18:08of people saying, well, you know, that NASCAR is not, not a
- 18:12sport. I love when people say that.
- 18:14So, OK, maybe it's not a sport, it's a way of life.
- 18:17And maybe a NASCAR driver isn't an athlete, but the NASCAR
- 18:21driver can do something that the rest of us can.
- 18:26You need a skill set for that purpose.
- 18:29And I'm sure as as many years as I've known you, Jeremy, I'm sure
- 18:32it kind of rolls off your back. But the the concept of athlete
- 18:38or not, I don't think matters. I just think that a driver can
- 18:41do something the rest of us can't.
- 18:43And that's the most important part of it.
- 18:46I would certainly agree. I, I think Stephen A Smith has
- 18:51his opinion and until he steps or sits inside of a, an actual
- 18:58race car, he's, he's just, he's not going to have all the
- 19:01information needed to, to make the opinion that I would see
- 19:07the, you know, to be to drive these, these race cars each and
- 19:10every weekend And in the hot, in that hot environment, it takes,
- 19:16it takes a lot and there's certainly not everybody can do
- 19:20it. And like you said, it's a
- 19:21particular skill set. I'm not a golfer, I'm not a
- 19:24bowler. Those guys have those skill
- 19:27sets. And I think, I think golfers are
- 19:31athletes. So I'm saying, yeah, it's all
- 19:33different. But it takes particular skills
- 19:36to do the do the job. And it's certainly being a race
- 19:40car driver, you have to be physical it, it takes a lot to
- 19:44drive these these cars that fast for that long, mentally,
- 19:48physically, all of it. So in my opinion, I don't see
- 19:52how you couldn't call a race car driver an athlete.
- 19:56But everybody's entitled to their opinion.
- 19:59Yeah, so it was Jimmie Johnson, the general manager at Hendrick
- 20:02Motorsports, not the driver way back when, because every once in
- 20:06a while, Jeremy, I guess our ages show up as long as we've
- 20:08known each other and been around this sport.
- 20:11But Jimmie Johnson, the general manager at Hendrick Motorsports,
- 20:14told me, he said, you know, you've been covering the stick
- 20:16and ball sports for ages. But remember, when you're
- 20:19covering racing, you have to take it a different way because
- 20:22the other guys in the stick and ball sports, they practice their
- 20:27craft a couple hours a day for six months out of the year.
- 20:30Most racers practice their craft 7 to 7, seven days a week, and
- 20:35when they're not at the racetrack, they're thinking
- 20:36about it. So I think that sets an even
- 20:39higher bar, not just for the driver, but anybody else who
- 20:42competes. Yeah, good point.
- 20:46I know for myself, I'm thinking of what track am I going to, OK,
- 20:50I'm going to Texas. How am I going to attack that
- 20:53track when I get out there for practice?
- 20:54Because we don't have we don't have long to figure it out.
- 20:57You have to go out there and and usually, you know, the tie, you
- 21:01get one set of tires or you're going to push the car to its
- 21:04hardest that first lap or if not, you're going to waste the
- 21:08goody off the tires to to go fast.
- 21:10So you're thinking about how to attack each corner where you're
- 21:14going to let off and break and use the gas and how aggressive
- 21:18and the wheel input and what you're you're going to be
- 21:21looking at and thinking about. So there's a lot that goes on to
- 21:26to driving these race cars each and every week.
- 21:28And in the NASCAR from the Cup Series, O'Reilly Series trucks
- 21:32here, it doesn't matter what it is, you, you, you're definitely
- 21:35thinking about each and every day.
- 21:37Yep. And so much I know has to go
- 21:39into this because, you know, again, the great Tony Stewart
- 21:42once said there's probably a lot of better drivers out there than
- 21:46I am, which is kind of hard to believe from Tony, but he said I
- 21:49got my break. You not only as a race car
- 21:52driver do you have to have that skill set, but a lot of things
- 21:56have to come together, don't they Jeremy?
- 21:59Got to be a grinder, man. You got to, you got to, I don't
- 22:02know, John, you got to figure it out somehow.
- 22:04You know, if you're not coming from some kind of big money, you
- 22:09got to figure out how to get the funding to do it.
- 22:12You got to put yourself in different positions.
- 22:15It, it is, is probably one of the hardest sports to to get in
- 22:20and stay there. Really.
- 22:21You know, it's a, it's a small club and it, and it's tough.
- 22:25So I know I fight hard each and every day to be, to be where I'm
- 22:31at, to be honest. And sometimes you feel like you
- 22:34don't know how much longer it's going to last.
- 22:35And then it keeps you keep it going somehow, some way.
- 22:38So you just, if you love something, you're going to,
- 22:41you're going to try to push as hard as you can to keep it going
- 22:45and keep fighting. And, and that's what I know.
- 22:47That's what I've been doing my whole career.
- 22:50Well, Jeremy, you, you look good, you look young, but I know
- 22:53you're one of the real veterans of this sport right now.
- 22:57And most of the drivers that we do talk to you, they say I want
- 22:59to do this until I'm not competitive anymore.
- 23:01When you get a top five at Talladega, clearly you're
- 23:04competitive, but have you given thought to the other side?
- 23:08Or do you just want to ride the wave as long as you possibly
- 23:11can? I would say right now I'm just
- 23:14riding the wave. I certainly feel great, still
- 23:19feel in the car like I can get it done any day and I love
- 23:25racing. So I guess I guess when those
- 23:27things come, when it when it's when you don't feel good and you
- 23:32can't, you'll know it. I think as a driver, I could see
- 23:35that happening. You'll sit in the car, you might
- 23:38be in the middle of the race. You'll be like man, I don't
- 23:40know. I just don't.
- 23:41I don't know if I have what it takes anymore.
- 23:43I feel like it might hit you like that.
- 23:45I don't know that, but I'm just saying I feel like that's that's
- 23:49going to happen. So I guess until I physically
- 23:53can't do it or I'm not in my head, I know I can't do it well
- 23:57enough to my to my level that I have.
- 23:59Then that's when I'll hang it up.
- 24:01Well, Jeremy, I've always had a great appreciation for what guys
- 24:05like you do, the family organizations that battle
- 24:09against these huge race teams and have success.
- 24:12Got a ton of respect for you, man.
- 24:14Happy to call you a friend and thank you so much for joining
- 24:16us, Jeremy. It's great to talk to you.
