- 0:08Speaker 1: This is Me Eat podcast coming at you shirtless, severely
- 0:13Speaker 1: bug bitten and in my case, underwear lessening podcast. You

- 0:26Speaker 1: Hunt app from the iTunes or Google play store. Nor
- 0:29Speaker 1: where you stand with on x Oh, Yanni? Can you
- 0:36Speaker 1: tell everybody about your road kill moose story? Sure? Can? Steve?
- 0:40Speaker 1: Go ahead? I was on my way home hard day
- 0:44Speaker 1: of work. Yeah, it was late, actually it was that
- 0:49Speaker 1: after six beautiful day though. I remember because I was
- 0:53Speaker 1: in my shorts and a short sleeved shirt and at
- 0:55Speaker 1: that time of the night it was still nice and warm.
- 0:57Speaker 1: I was actually on my way to meet my neighbor
- 0:59Speaker 1: because is the post production team needed a piece of metal, um,
- 1:06Speaker 1: sheet metal or something of the like to put underneath
- 1:09Speaker 1: some food that they were going to be shooting, and
- 1:11Speaker 1: they wanted a different background. And as you know, my neighbor, Okay,
- 1:15Speaker 1: you gotta plug his business right anyone living in there.
- 1:17Speaker 1: Barton of Southwest Montana, Barton Fabrication, You need any sort
- 1:21Speaker 1: of welding, cool metal work type done. Steve had a
- 1:25Speaker 1: what's that thing called it's a long list. He made
- 1:29Speaker 1: my three sixteen inch thick garden boxes on a welded
- 1:35Speaker 1: steel plate, which your coolest ship. Yeah, they looked nice.
- 1:38Speaker 1: He made. He he does like fancy houses, I should
- 1:43Speaker 1: point out, but I have him do like low grade stuff.
- 1:46Speaker 1: So he did that. He we. I had a stainless
- 1:49Speaker 1: steel trompo, which is like when you're in Mexico and
- 1:51Speaker 1: I got the the big thing of pork that spins
- 1:55Speaker 1: on a spindle and you order a taco and a
- 1:56Speaker 1: shave off to take like a machette and shave off
- 2:00Speaker 1: hunks of meat onto a street taco. I think more
- 2:03Speaker 1: people would uh understand it though, if you just said,
- 2:06Speaker 1: like a hero, like if you had a Greek place
- 2:08Speaker 1: and you look in the back and there's that big
- 2:09Speaker 1: hunk of meat, because that's where you like to go
- 2:12Speaker 1: for vacation. I don't. I've never been. I'd love to
- 2:16Speaker 1: check out Greece, though, but I'm just saying that most
- 2:19Speaker 1: people would. That's that's what you think of when you
- 2:21Speaker 1: think of a big hun good spinning meat. Yeah, well no,
- 2:25Speaker 1: sure if you do. Growing up in Missoula, Montana, there
- 2:29Speaker 1: were three euro places like yeah really yeah, a cropolis Greek,
- 2:36Speaker 1: and they all had a trumpo. Then it called a trumpo.
- 2:39Speaker 1: They probably call some Greek thing. Yeah, yep, correct. How
- 2:43Speaker 1: would you say it if you're goofing on like a
- 2:45Speaker 1: trompolo trumpo trumpolo, and if you put a Greek spin
- 2:49Speaker 1: on it, trumpoppopoca. So he yeah, mine was hand crack.
- 2:57Speaker 1: You had to hand turn. Ronnie Bain made it. We
- 3:00Speaker 1: used it once at my wedding, but it was hand turned,
- 3:03Speaker 1: and so he retro fitted it for a He retro
- 3:08Speaker 1: fitted it for a Rotistrie motor, did a beautiful job
- 3:12Speaker 1: of it. Then he made me twelve des and I
- 3:17Speaker 1: haven't do a lot of stuff's way beneath him. He
- 3:20Speaker 1: made me twelve snare supports, So weldon galvanized wire on
- 3:25Speaker 1: the rebar so that you pound the rebarn to the
- 3:27Speaker 1: ground in position the wire right where he wanted to
- 3:29Speaker 1: hang beaver snares whatever you're snaring um. And and now
- 3:35Speaker 1: he's doing something doesn't require welding where because he's got
- 3:38Speaker 1: a hoist. He's helping me mount uh Honda jet onto
- 3:42Speaker 1: my hog island shallow water skiff nice. And meanwhile he
- 3:47Speaker 1: does all kinds of fancy house stuff spartan fabrication. He is.
- 3:51Speaker 1: We can go on and on about this guy. I
- 3:52Speaker 1: mean he I'm so lucky to have him as a neighbor.
- 3:55Speaker 1: He is the world's best neighbor. I mean he just
- 3:59Speaker 1: he's a fire chief. He's a higher achieved so he's
- 4:01Speaker 1: like home half the time. And when he's at home,
- 4:04Speaker 1: it's like any problem you could think of at your house.
- 4:08Speaker 1: You're like, hey, Travis, uh my chains got one of these?
- 4:12Speaker 1: Come on down, you know, just bring the truck over,
- 4:14Speaker 1: We'll put on the lift. We'll just take those wheels
- 4:16Speaker 1: right off. Right now. That's not true though, because he
- 4:18Speaker 1: failed us on a thirty six inch chainsall bar. Yeah,
- 4:22Speaker 1: you're offered up a cross cut saw. Ye if you
- 4:27Speaker 1: can't help you out. He has a good sense of humor. Um.
- 4:32Speaker 1: But yeah, in my house for our remodel, I mean
- 4:34Speaker 1: there's a ton of Travis bartin work handrails. Um. What
- 4:41Speaker 1: do you call the pieces? The ballusters? You know that
- 4:44Speaker 1: all that is Travis is there's some I beams in there,
- 4:47Speaker 1: some shelving. My whole kitchen table countertop is made out
- 4:52Speaker 1: of steel. And I can't tell a good world. But
- 4:55Speaker 1: anybody that's ever come over that must have some sort
- 4:58Speaker 1: of background in welding. They look at that table and
- 5:00Speaker 1: they go, whoever did this knows their ship. That's funny
- 5:03Speaker 1: because Doug Dering took a look at my garden boxes
- 5:06Speaker 1: and the first thing he said is he made a
- 5:08Speaker 1: joke about the worlds, meaning like he made like a
- 5:11Speaker 1: reverse joke, commented on the shitty welds meaning holy sh it,
- 5:17Speaker 1: kind of like a dirt like a dirt joke. Yeah,
- 5:20Speaker 1: like he basically he was saying, like, what a phenomenal weld,
- 5:24Speaker 1: but instead of saying that, he acted like he was.
- 5:27Speaker 1: He was like, it must have been this guy's first day. Yeah, yeah,
- 5:31Speaker 1: you know I'm doing a horrible job. Yeah, yeah, we
- 5:34Speaker 1: get it though. So I was on my way to
- 5:37Speaker 1: Travis's house and um, right when I pulled off the pavement,
- 5:44Speaker 1: I forgot we're talking about yeah, talking about my road
- 5:47Speaker 1: kill moose, um travishes. They're waiting for me on the dirt,
- 5:53Speaker 1: which I thought was odd and specifically waiting for you. Yeah,
- 5:57Speaker 1: because he I was going to his house to meet him,
- 5:59Speaker 1: so he knew I was on the way, and uh,
- 6:02Speaker 1: he walks up to my truck and he just says, uh,
- 6:06Speaker 1: you want to moose. Kind of caught me off guard,
- 6:10Speaker 1: and but I quickly put two and two together, and
- 6:12Speaker 1: like you, I could I look down the road maybe
- 6:14Speaker 1: a hundred yards and I could see a blue four
- 6:18Speaker 1: pickup trucks sitting down there and pick up was it
- 6:21Speaker 1: as as a raptor rafter? Yeah? And um, what's the
- 6:26Speaker 1: reputation that? Like when you see someone driving a raft?
- 6:28Speaker 1: What do you do you have like a thing like oh,
- 6:30Speaker 1: he like I think they have a bigger gas budget
- 6:34Speaker 1: than I do, just generally, probably bigger budget because I
- 6:38Speaker 1: don't think that's a cheap truck. No, but I'm not
- 6:42Speaker 1: because I was about a regular old F one fifty
- 6:44Speaker 1: a year ago. Yeah. Man, you should have gone raptor
- 6:48Speaker 1: because yeah, because it goes faster. Yeah. I like go
- 6:53Speaker 1: nice and slow. Yeah me too. I have no use
- 6:55Speaker 1: for a raptor. They both probably go equally as fast.
- 6:59Speaker 1: One just excel at rates. I like to accelerate slowly,
- 7:03Speaker 1: kind of more angry looking, more aggressive looking. Yeah, well
- 7:06Speaker 1: I am angry. Something that's prime for like big sticker
- 7:08Speaker 1: on the back window. Our buddy JA runs one. He
- 7:12Speaker 1: likes that truck. Yeah, loves it. Go on, big big truck. Yeah,
- 7:16Speaker 1: One of the first things he said is, I was
- 7:18Speaker 1: contemplating going to look at this moose. He's not much
- 7:22Speaker 1: damage on the raptor. I'm thinking, well, you know, that's
- 7:25Speaker 1: probably good. Good for your Yeah, good for the mouse.
- 7:27Speaker 1: Probably not much damage on the moose either. He said
- 7:29Speaker 1: it was a calf um that had been hit, so
- 7:32Speaker 1: we went to check it out. And Uh. I had
- 7:35Speaker 1: one other experience, which I've told you before about with
- 7:38Speaker 1: picking up road kill. Buddy of mine, Jimmy and Colorado
- 7:41Speaker 1: once had gotten one from a herd that had been
- 7:45Speaker 1: demolished by I think actually a bunch of honeywagon trucks.
- 7:48Speaker 1: And he pulled up and they actually had a four
- 7:51Speaker 1: trucks carrying honey or carrying porter potties. Uh, just disposal trucks,
- 7:56Speaker 1: you know, I ain't. The company in Veil was called
- 8:00Speaker 1: racking Um. Anyways, a bunch had been knocked off the
- 8:05Speaker 1: interstate and they actually had like a bucket truck or something.
- 8:08Speaker 1: There's loading elk into people's trucks and um Jimmy Miller, Yeah,
- 8:14Speaker 1: Jimmy Miller, who once found a buck tangled up. I
- 8:21Speaker 1: think you only unbail, hey, like a guy might unbail
- 8:25Speaker 1: hay and throws all the corriage into a pile. Wasn't
- 8:28Speaker 1: that what happened? Yeah, that's right. And found a buck
- 8:30Speaker 1: all tangled up in the corridage, you know, and went
- 8:33Speaker 1: down here and caught it free. And then the buck
- 8:34Speaker 1: trying to kick his head once he got it freed up,
- 8:39Speaker 1: you know, fell right into his plan. So there are Um. Well,
- 8:46Speaker 1: but back to Miller's story real quick. When we went
- 8:49Speaker 1: I went to his house to help him peel that
- 8:52Speaker 1: thing out, and it was just when we peeled out,
- 8:55Speaker 1: it was purple from knows the tail peeling it out
- 9:00Speaker 1: being a yeah, and uh so we turned as much
- 9:04Speaker 1: as of it as we could into dog food. And
- 9:07Speaker 1: I don't think any of it was fit for human consumption.
- 9:10Speaker 1: And so I was a little little leary, you know,
- 9:13Speaker 1: going into it. But I looked at this calf moose. Um,
- 9:18Speaker 1: it's unfortunately I much I had the moose running around.
- 9:20Speaker 1: We've been watching it, you know, since it was born.
- 9:22Speaker 1: You know, the thing was probably only six to eight weeks.
- 9:25Speaker 1: I didn't catch that either. You were familiar with this
- 9:27Speaker 1: particular girl, Yeah, we had seen it maybe two days earlier.
- 9:31Speaker 1: Oh really, I didn't know she had to she had twins.
- 9:34Speaker 1: This is part remember the story I told about how
- 9:36Speaker 1: I saw the cow elk come and cut that one
- 9:39Speaker 1: calf out from underneath the cow moose with the two
- 9:43Speaker 1: remembered it. Really, I'm sitting there watching a cow moose
- 9:46Speaker 1: one night with her two babies. They come up the
- 9:48Speaker 1: dirt road and they kind of get off on the
- 9:50Speaker 1: edge and they're feeding along and out like my periphery,
- 9:53Speaker 1: I see something running and down the hill comes the
- 9:56Speaker 1: cow elk, and it's getting dusky. She comes down, goes
- 10:00Speaker 1: right up to him and then just stands there and
- 10:02Speaker 1: kind of an aggressive pose, and uh, I didn't know
- 10:06Speaker 1: what to make of it, you know, and the cow
- 10:08Speaker 1: moose just sort of pined her ears back, but like
- 10:11Speaker 1: became subordinate, definitely didn't stand up to this cow elk.
- 10:15Speaker 1: And the cow elk sort of starts chasing him a
- 10:17Speaker 1: little bit. It's like half play but half aggressive, and
- 10:20Speaker 1: she sort of starts cutting between the two uh calves,
- 10:24Speaker 1: and again these guys are like they looked like they
- 10:26Speaker 1: took their first steps a week ago, you know, and uh,
- 10:29Speaker 1: it's getting darker. But eventually the cow moose runs up
- 10:33Speaker 1: the hill with one of the calves and the cow
- 10:36Speaker 1: elk stayed with one of the calf. Moose pedophile kidnapping.
- 10:43Speaker 1: It was like that. Yeah, it was like it was
- 10:46Speaker 1: like in humans, you know, thought You're like, oh, she
- 10:49Speaker 1: must have lost her her cow elk or her cow
- 10:55Speaker 1: her elk calf, and now she's trying to pick up
- 10:57Speaker 1: another one from this moose. You know who knows. But
- 11:00Speaker 1: it was very odd, very odd animal behavior. Then Anthony,
- 11:03Speaker 1: better introduce yourself real quick, because, uh, you don't join
- 11:07Speaker 1: us all the time. I'm Anthony Locata. I'm editor in
- 11:11Speaker 1: chief here at meat Eater. There you go, olcome. Thanks, Yeah,
- 11:16Speaker 1: nice to have you first Meteator podcast. Yeah, yeah, I've been,
- 11:20Speaker 1: uh but you sat with us the other day. Ye
- 11:22Speaker 1: sat the other day, And I've been on a honey
- 11:25Speaker 1: collect a couple of times. But I've been working remotely
- 11:29Speaker 1: for the first couple of months here in the job.
- 11:31Speaker 1: But finally I'm here in Bozeman, so you'll be able
- 11:33Speaker 1: to editorialize. Yes in chief, you've been oh um, so yeah,
- 11:42Speaker 1: it's some history with uh, with this calf. So there
- 11:45Speaker 1: we are for ye and uh, it looks like the
- 11:49Speaker 1: calf has like a blow to the head and then
- 11:52Speaker 1: one of its back legs is you know, broken flopping
- 11:56Speaker 1: like below the knee and otherwise doesn't look messed up
- 12:01Speaker 1: at all. There's not a lot of blood on the road.
- 12:04Speaker 1: Chaffs is like, literally, well, now, why did he not
- 12:06Speaker 1: want it? He's not a big hunter, not a big
- 12:10Speaker 1: wild game guy. Um. His daughter had actually witnessed it happened.
- 12:14Speaker 1: It was kind of traumatic for her. She's I don't know,
- 12:18Speaker 1: not quite high school age. Um. So I was like, well,
- 12:22Speaker 1: do you want some to meat? He's like, well, yeah,
- 12:24Speaker 1: I just but just don't tell my daughter where it
- 12:26Speaker 1: came from, you know. Um. So I'm gonna get him
- 12:29Speaker 1: some meat. But yeah, that's just not his style, you know,
- 12:34Speaker 1: not his style um eating stuff he found dead on
- 12:37Speaker 1: the side the road. Yeah, but I don't. I just
- 12:39Speaker 1: don't think they eat a lot of while a game
- 12:41Speaker 1: in that house. He's too busy welding fires. Um. So yeah,
- 12:46Speaker 1: I checked it out and uh sort of uh talks
- 12:50Speaker 1: to Chavis about what it would take to get it.
- 12:52Speaker 1: I kind of knew the steps, and I said, well,
- 12:54Speaker 1: let me just call highway patrol. I think that's who
- 12:56Speaker 1: I called. And the Chavis kind of guy again to sort,
- 13:00Speaker 1: you know, build his character out a little bit. I'm like, yeah,
- 13:02Speaker 1: I'll call high Control and he just rattles off the number. Um.
- 13:09Speaker 1: So I call him and the guy says, yeah, man,
- 13:11Speaker 1: really easy. Just go onto the fish and Wildlife website
- 13:14Speaker 1: and there's an application, fill it out and make sure
- 13:16Speaker 1: it's filled out and submitted within like twenty four hours.
- 13:19Speaker 1: Have at it, um and so we uh, I try
- 13:23Speaker 1: to put it into the truck as it was, it
- 13:26Speaker 1: was too heavy for us to just two men get
- 13:28Speaker 1: into the back of the truck. So I gutted it
- 13:30Speaker 1: right there on the median. I'm sorry the shoulder. You
- 13:34Speaker 1: got a good point. It seems only a few months old. Yeah,
- 13:37Speaker 1: maybe not even two months old. Huh yeah, the sweetest,
- 13:42Speaker 1: that's an insane amount of growth. Oh, it is too amazing, amazing. Yeah.
- 13:48Speaker 1: I think about what that cow must have to do
- 13:50Speaker 1: to produce those calories, to have two of them, you know,
- 13:52Speaker 1: putting on that kind of weight. Yeah. And I mean,
- 13:56Speaker 1: you're the my mental picture of your neighbor as he
- 14:00Speaker 1: not a small dude either, nice tough guy. Beat his ass.
- 14:08Speaker 1: What amazing amount of growth. So I got it right there,
- 14:12Speaker 1: slide the guts down off the office shoulders. Kind of
- 14:15Speaker 1: a steep embankment goes down into the ditch grassy area.
- 14:18Speaker 1: Kind of we slung her in there. When did the uh,
- 14:22Speaker 1: you know, like I said, the permit application there online
- 14:24Speaker 1: and I don't know, thirty minutes later they sent me
- 14:26Speaker 1: an email and said, here's your salvage permit. Oh so
- 14:29Speaker 1: no physical inspection, Nope, no, no. Um. There was actually
- 14:34Speaker 1: a I think she was a sheriff. Maybe that rolled
- 14:37Speaker 1: in while we were working on it. She might have
- 14:39Speaker 1: been there right at the end to kind of help
- 14:41Speaker 1: push a little bit to get the moose in there.
- 14:45Speaker 1: And she didn't have much to say about it. She
- 14:47Speaker 1: said that good for you. Correct now the the awful,
- 14:52Speaker 1: the guts um with that salvage the law. Yeah, I
- 14:56Speaker 1: was gonna, what are you asking about that? With the
- 15:00Speaker 1: alvage permit? Right, aren't you supposed to remove anything that
- 15:03Speaker 1: could attract other animals too? There's something to that. Oh,
- 15:07Speaker 1: that's the logic behind that. And you put that together.
- 15:09Speaker 1: They they don't want like the bears, they don't want
- 15:14Speaker 1: them to bear and then you got like this whole
- 15:16Speaker 1: vicious cycle. Yep. I was wondered. Word. I felt like
- 15:19Speaker 1: like they didn't want people to see a gup popper honest,
- 15:22Speaker 1: is just downloading salvage permits all year Long's I got
- 15:25Speaker 1: bear moves on spot my truck Scott like two or
- 15:32Speaker 1: fifty miles on it, so you know with another ding.
- 15:35Speaker 1: But you broke the law by leaving the gut pile there. Yeah, yeah,
- 15:38Speaker 1: as I call it in the morning, and they said, yeah,
- 15:41Speaker 1: next time, you know, take the guts too, and um,
- 15:44Speaker 1: don't leave me on the side of the road. Otherwise
- 15:46Speaker 1: you're all sat man. So yeah, we let it. We
- 15:49Speaker 1: butchered it up that night quartered in got Luckily a
- 15:52Speaker 1: neighbor of mine had an empty fridge that was turned
- 15:55Speaker 1: on sitting in his Uh, it wasn't completely empty. He
- 15:59Speaker 1: has beer. Say you might have an energy efficiency chat
- 16:01Speaker 1: with that fella. Yeah, he's got some beer in there
- 16:04Speaker 1: staying cold. But we moved some things around were easily
- 16:06Speaker 1: able to get the whole moose in there. Yeah, let's
- 16:08Speaker 1: sit for a week and then butchered it the next weekend.
- 16:11Speaker 1: And uh, I gave you a package of the ground.
- 16:13Speaker 1: Did you eat it yet? Somebody can't believe you just
- 16:17Speaker 1: sent me like a package. I mean, that's great, thank you,
- 16:19Speaker 1: but just the package of ground, huh. I want to
- 16:22Speaker 1: be fair. On the text message chain, you were like, no,
- 16:25Speaker 1: I'm not gonna come help, but I'll take the tender lines. Yeah,
- 16:30Speaker 1: and I uh, I will admit. Also, your honest called
- 16:33Speaker 1: me right away and he's like, hey, if you can,
- 16:36Speaker 1: you want to come up and help. Did you ask
- 16:38Speaker 1: for help? Yeah, just with the uh just cutting it up.
- 16:43Speaker 1: You specifically asked for help when I said no, no, no, no, no,
- 16:47Speaker 1: just coult yeah, and I felt like trying to cut
- 16:50Speaker 1: me out. Hey, fill the engineer, What do you think
- 16:52Speaker 1: about all this? I think it's I've never had moose you.
- 16:56Speaker 1: I think you were about to go into the taste
- 16:58Speaker 1: of of the ground right, yeah, just as NUIs in general.
- 17:02Speaker 1: The smell before we even butchered it. I gotta talk
- 17:04Speaker 1: about this because it was the like the sweetest, most
- 17:09Speaker 1: like grassy fresh cut hay, like to the point where
- 17:13Speaker 1: it's almost like so pungent that it might turn some
- 17:16Speaker 1: people off. But I think once you get through the pungentness,
- 17:19Speaker 1: you just realize it's just like this sweet grass smell.
- 17:21Speaker 1: And I don't know if it's from the eight the
- 17:25Speaker 1: extreme young age of the animal, or if it was
- 17:27Speaker 1: just his diet at that time. It was definitely hanging. Yeah.
- 17:33Speaker 1: But and and that meat definitely it's nowhere near as pungent,
- 17:36Speaker 1: but it definitely carries that palette with it. You know
- 17:40Speaker 1: what you can tell me if you wanted to impress
- 17:42Speaker 1: the hell out of me, you tell me that you
- 17:45Speaker 1: drank the curdled mother's milk from its stomach. Yeah. Sorry,
- 17:49Speaker 1: I'm not gonna impress lose again. Um. Yeah, so I
- 17:59Speaker 1: got a I mean, I bet I didn't weigh it,
- 18:02Speaker 1: but I bet you we yielded um, well over a
- 18:08Speaker 1: hundred pounds. Are you serious? Yeah, more meat than you
- 18:12Speaker 1: would have gotten off a big meal in your buck.
- 18:14Speaker 1: Yeah it was you. No, it was definitely like a
- 18:17Speaker 1: small to medium cow elk. That's impressive. I think I
- 18:23Speaker 1: will take a little bit of that. Yeah, No, there's plenty.
- 18:26Speaker 1: I don't know why I only threw in the ground.
- 18:28Speaker 1: Maybe because that's always looking at when I was getting
- 18:30Speaker 1: your turkey and the ground was sitting right next to it. Yeah,
- 18:34Speaker 1: because I remember giving you some real nice uh hell
- 18:37Speaker 1: of it flas flames, choice cuts, choice cuts. I wasn't like, hey,
- 18:44Speaker 1: here's the guts off some salmon, Steve's choice cuts. Um good,
- 18:50Speaker 1: good on that quick nipple biting story. They flood in.
- 18:59Speaker 1: You wear this ant and they flood in. Guy guy
- 19:03Speaker 1: was sitting in the lake. I think it's a Massachusetts.
- 19:05Speaker 1: He wrote in we had talking about other people getting
- 19:08Speaker 1: their nipples bit by fish um, which started out, we're
- 19:13Speaker 1: talking about a woman tearing her nipple on. She wrote
- 19:16Speaker 1: in that she tore her nipple on a barbwar fence.
- 19:18Speaker 1: It was a mass and then all these nipple injuries
- 19:23Speaker 1: and she was in a hurry to go hunting, got
- 19:26Speaker 1: like some kind of she got out of some kind
- 19:28Speaker 1: of athletic event and was trying to get out in
- 19:31Speaker 1: the dove field hop the fence gas or nipple. She said.
- 19:34Speaker 1: Her ex husband called its scarface. She said, she's got
- 19:39Speaker 1: me like a fish if I gave her name, which
- 19:40Speaker 1: I never did, like her. Uh. And then more nipple
- 19:45Speaker 1: stories came in, but the most recent one is a
- 19:47Speaker 1: guy was he was sitting in the lake in Massachusetts
- 19:49Speaker 1: with his future with with who is now his wife,
- 19:53Speaker 1: and he said they were doing that thing where you
- 19:54Speaker 1: got your elbows kind of like up on a dock.
- 19:56Speaker 1: You picture I'm saying, like hot tub style, Yeah, hot
- 19:59Speaker 1: tub style in a lake, elbows up on dock and
- 20:01Speaker 1: all a sudden now looks now as nipples bleeding all over.
- 20:06Speaker 1: What's funny is he do must not know a hell
- 20:08Speaker 1: of a lot about fish, because he said he thinks
- 20:10Speaker 1: it could have been bluegills because he had seen Here's
- 20:12Speaker 1: the story gets weird, but I believe every bit of it.
- 20:15Speaker 1: He had seen some guys spitting dip spitting tobacco juice
- 20:22Speaker 1: into the water on the same dock, and bluegills are
- 20:25Speaker 1: eating it. So he figures, you know what, this sound
- 20:29Speaker 1: looks like a good place for me, my gal to
- 20:31Speaker 1: go soak a minute. But know that it happened before. Yeah,
- 20:36Speaker 1: I understand he's aware that there's so he's I feel
- 20:39Speaker 1: like a bluegill. But a blue guild does not draw blood.
- 20:41Speaker 1: A blue guild does not bite your nipple and draw blood.
- 20:45Speaker 1: So there's got to be a kind of a b
- 20:47Speaker 1: test go It's like, well, we are blue gill more
- 20:51Speaker 1: aggressive with a healthy dose and nicotine. Oh that's a
- 20:54Speaker 1: good point. Maybe they get so jacked up. I'm but
- 20:58Speaker 1: I think that that, yeah, there's blue was around. I
- 21:00Speaker 1: think there's a north around Northern Pike, and I think
- 21:03Speaker 1: the Northern Pike gashed his nipple. But the takeaway is
- 21:06Speaker 1: he suggested that you'd make a fish and luard to
- 21:09Speaker 1: look like a nipple and smelled like chew nipples look
- 21:15Speaker 1: like bait. They just do. Yeah, they do have a
- 21:17Speaker 1: bait like appearance. Man. I had to cist cut out
- 21:19Speaker 1: of my head, a sebaceous sits or whatever you call it,
- 21:23Speaker 1: like it was like on top. It was on top
- 21:25Speaker 1: of my like you don't want to sist in your skull,
- 21:28Speaker 1: between the skin and the skull, like a not scary one.
- 21:32Speaker 1: They cut it out and I had some little hairs
- 21:33Speaker 1: growing out of it still, and I kept it. I
- 21:35Speaker 1: asked me if I could have it, and I kept
- 21:36Speaker 1: it in this jar alcohol. It's about the size of
- 21:39Speaker 1: the end of your pinky. And I'd get to drinking
- 21:40Speaker 1: and get that thing out and tell people how I
- 21:43Speaker 1: was gonna catch a perch off that thing, and it
- 21:46Speaker 1: kind of overtime dissolved. That's too bad, and I never
- 21:50Speaker 1: got to never got to fulfill my my was back,
- 21:53Speaker 1: and I used to like to drink a lot more
- 21:54Speaker 1: than I do now. I still like to have a
- 21:56Speaker 1: little drinking on him, but it never goes so far
- 21:57Speaker 1: that I get out my cist and started, I don't
- 22:02Speaker 1: get off with sist anymore ts and rolled it in
- 22:05Speaker 1: some glitter A truth ain't no youth, So does that
- 22:10Speaker 1: guy rode in? Um oh, and Anthony talked about the
- 22:15Speaker 1: thing that you were going to talk about real quick. Bigfoot. Yeah, yeah,
- 22:18Speaker 1: one of my favorite subjects. Right. Uh So we have
- 22:22Speaker 1: this great report from the proceedings of the Royal Society,
- 22:26Speaker 1: some organization and uh great Britain, and their mission here
- 22:31Speaker 1: was to take all these samples of hair that have
- 22:35Speaker 1: been collected over the years that for one reason or
- 22:38Speaker 1: another I have been identified as possible bigfoot here, bigfoot
- 22:42Speaker 1: sasquatch yettie, you know, depending because they're all over the world.
- 22:47Speaker 1: So setting it up here that I think this is
- 22:49Speaker 1: really important. What I found was a very interesting point.
- 22:51Speaker 1: They kind of lay out the theories of what these
- 22:54Speaker 1: creatures could be. Right, They could be some kind of
- 22:58Speaker 1: um remaining population of some sort of humanoid you know,
- 23:02Speaker 1: chro magnet, not that exactly, but something like that. Um.
- 23:06Speaker 1: They could be some species of extinct ape. But here's
- 23:10Speaker 1: the one that I had never heard. One theory is
- 23:13Speaker 1: that they are hybreds between humans and some mammal, which
- 23:19Speaker 1: I heard that one by, Like, I like that. I
- 23:22Speaker 1: would love to know what kind of other mammal human
- 23:25Speaker 1: could The bear comes by and it looks kind of
- 23:30Speaker 1: like uh so, I thought that was pretty fascinating. I
- 23:38Speaker 1: like to think about that theory. Maybe it's changing my mind.
- 23:41Speaker 1: Um yeah, that one doesn't get thrown out. The one
- 23:44Speaker 1: that gets thrown out is it's like uh like the
- 23:47Speaker 1: I think the lead one is that it's some other
- 23:50Speaker 1: primate exactly hiding out exactly some primate that that is unknown,
- 23:55Speaker 1: or one of those other things. So they had fifty
- 23:58Speaker 1: seven samples of hair kind of up to real quick,
- 24:01Speaker 1: please no, you know, I'll do it as a follow up,
- 24:03Speaker 1: Go ahead, fifty seven samples hair. For one reason or another,
- 24:07Speaker 1: someone were kicked out some of carpet fiber, stupid stuff
- 24:11Speaker 1: like that. So but they're left. There was a there
- 24:13Speaker 1: was a bigfoot sample that turned out to be carpet fiber, right,
- 24:16Speaker 1: plastic fiber. They think it was carpet fiber. Right, So
- 24:21Speaker 1: they end up with thirty seven and use genetic testing
- 24:25Speaker 1: and all these other scientific methods to identify what they are.
- 24:29Speaker 1: And these these things came from Russia, from Arizona, from Washington, Texas, Oregon, India.
- 24:37Speaker 1: Turns out they're all animals we know and well, polar bear,
- 24:41Speaker 1: brown bear, horses, cows, black bears, a lot of black bears, raccoons.
- 24:47Speaker 1: One of the samples came from a human, so it
- 24:49Speaker 1: must have been somebody with very glorious locks, bigfoot like locks.
- 24:54Speaker 1: Maybe somebody with dreads. I don't know, um porcupine save
- 24:58Speaker 1: dirts back and probably get dude if I saw if
- 25:02Speaker 1: I wasn't with dirt, I saw him coming through the
- 25:03Speaker 1: was that shoot? It's real. Yeah, coyotes, cows, dogs, wolves,
- 25:12Speaker 1: but alas, not a single big foot. It sounds like
- 25:16Speaker 1: a conspiracy. Not one freaking big foot in the whole
- 25:19Speaker 1: stack of hair sample. No, not one big foot. They had.
- 25:22Speaker 1: They had three that they at first couldn't identify, and
- 25:27Speaker 1: they were thinking maybe it was like a highbread between
- 25:29Speaker 1: a grizzly and a polar bear. But it turns out
- 25:31Speaker 1: they were just polar bear hairs as well. You know
- 25:33Speaker 1: what the good part about this is what this will
- 25:38Speaker 1: not change anyone's no no like big big foot. Dude
- 25:43Speaker 1: is gonna be like, ah, never mind, I guess they're right.
- 25:46Speaker 1: There is no big foot. There's no there's somebody staring
- 25:49Speaker 1: in their shoe box right now, being like, yeah, but
- 25:51Speaker 1: they haven't seen that. They have to see what I
- 25:55Speaker 1: found bag in my yard. Uh, guy rode in um
- 26:03Speaker 1: tell about his dad was going to buy a motorcycle
- 26:06Speaker 1: and their lording down the trailer and one thing leaves
- 26:08Speaker 1: you another and uh, one thing leaves you another. Any
- 26:12Speaker 1: in the trailer shifts? No, the I don't know he's
- 26:16Speaker 1: lowing a motorcycle into a trailer. One thing leads another
- 26:20Speaker 1: and his finger comes off his His ring finger on
- 26:24Speaker 1: his right hand was severed between the distal interphilangeal joint
- 26:28Speaker 1: and the proximal inter philangeal joint. And the dude he
- 26:33Speaker 1: was buying the motorcycle off of his dog ate it
- 26:37Speaker 1: and he wants to know. Um, he doesn't. He's doing
- 26:42Speaker 1: more than just telling the story. He's like, this happened
- 26:44Speaker 1: to you. What feelings did you have towards the dog
- 26:47Speaker 1: partial ownership? Would you be piste? He says, Um if
- 26:57Speaker 1: someone later told me that man, had you just grabbed
- 27:00Speaker 1: that before that dog ate it, we could have just
- 27:02Speaker 1: reattached it and you wouldn't have it. Now I would
- 27:05Speaker 1: be pissed. Could you get that? Can you make that
- 27:07Speaker 1: dog puke, or get it out of its stomach and
- 27:10Speaker 1: put it on. That'd be even better. My brother's dog
- 27:12Speaker 1: Shifty ate it. You could have killed Shifty and cut
- 27:16Speaker 1: it open and that dog would have been fine. The
- 27:18Speaker 1: finger would have been fine, because that dog eats stuff
- 27:21Speaker 1: and doesn't chew it. You can give it a big
- 27:23Speaker 1: strip like whatever. The other day I had, I gave
- 27:25Speaker 1: it a we we were out hunting and we had
- 27:28Speaker 1: some smoke Canada goosebreast, and the dog was like dying,
- 27:32Speaker 1: you could tell as hungry as I'll get out. And
- 27:34Speaker 1: I peeled away the skin off of smoke goosebreast and
- 27:38Speaker 1: it like, I didn't even pretend to chew it. It
- 27:43Speaker 1: just gone, not even one chew. When I was a kid,
- 27:47Speaker 1: I had a lab that I was eating a popsicle
- 27:50Speaker 1: right yeah, and I said it too low. Lab came
- 27:53Speaker 1: out boom gone. Two days later, popsicle stick came out.
- 27:58Speaker 1: Strip stripped soccer right off at though as looking at
- 28:01Speaker 1: like you could like you could use it again, or
- 28:03Speaker 1: use it for a craft project, send it back in
- 28:06Speaker 1: for a refill. Another guy real quick, um. Another guy
- 28:12Speaker 1: rolled in. He's talking about like eating his own dog.
- 28:15Speaker 1: Would you eat your dog? Say, if my dog died,
- 28:18Speaker 1: I was thinking about eating it. He said, when he
- 28:21Speaker 1: factors all the expenses he's got into that dog, he
- 28:25Speaker 1: said that that dog, the meat would be two seventy
- 28:29Speaker 1: dollars a pound. I don't know why he just sent
- 28:34Speaker 1: that in. No one's interested in that. Well, you beating dog?
- 28:40Speaker 1: How it tastes? Right? I didn't like it. Yeah, I
- 28:42Speaker 1: didn't like it one bit. Okay, one last thing. No
- 28:45Speaker 1: one's interested in that story. I thought I was good. Uh.
- 28:49Speaker 1: We had talked about, you know what we're doing. We
- 28:51Speaker 1: we had Jason Phelps from Phelps Game Calls, that's right
- 28:54Speaker 1: as Buddy Dirk, and we got we got to pondering
- 28:58Speaker 1: who like kind of in vent of the diaphragm call,
- 29:02Speaker 1: and a listener sent in a little clue. Yeah, we
- 29:04Speaker 1: were guessing like fifties sixties from you know some of
- 29:08Speaker 1: the names we kind of know that are still alive,
- 29:10Speaker 1: like it must have been Will Primos. Yeah, Carlton, and
- 29:15Speaker 1: the guy rolled in with a clue. Yep, he says.
- 29:18Speaker 1: In the n w t F Museum, which I've been in, Yeah,
- 29:23Speaker 1: I'd like to go sometime stands for National Wild Turkey Federation.
- 29:26Speaker 1: There is a display showing a patent from February five,
- 29:34Speaker 1: eighteen sixties seven, submitted by S. McClane for the first
- 29:40Speaker 1: patent for a diaphragm type mouth call US Patent number
- 29:45Speaker 1: sixty one thousand, four eighty six. And there it looks
- 29:52Speaker 1: like a current diaphragm. Yeah, that's the that's the crazy
- 29:56Speaker 1: like takeaway is that the it's really nothing different from
- 30:01Speaker 1: what I've seen his little diagram from what we put
- 30:03Speaker 1: in our mouths now to make Alcolm Turkey seven what
- 30:06Speaker 1: year did he do the patent? Eighteen sixty seven? One year,
- 30:10Speaker 1: one year after the Fetterman massacre. Well, I mean just
- 30:14Speaker 1: that's a brutal massacre story. Everything that was going on
- 30:18Speaker 1: in the US, Like it just kind of goes to
- 30:21Speaker 1: show you that, Uh, sometimes it doesn't slow down hunting
- 30:24Speaker 1: and fishing, because especially especially yeah, like what do you
- 30:29Speaker 1: hear a hunt story from ninety three, Like shouldn't you
- 30:31Speaker 1: been off fighting the war? Yeah? What U eighteen sixty seven?
- 30:36Speaker 1: Especially if it's anywhere near where the NWTF Museum is located,
- 30:41Speaker 1: which obviously it has, Like shouldn't you been just coming
- 30:44Speaker 1: rolling out of the Civil War? Yeah, it's like fire boys,
- 30:49Speaker 1: I got an idea. Have you ever heard this gap?
- 30:56Speaker 1: That's what the rebel yelled. Since you mentioned it, can
- 30:59Speaker 1: you of us a quick synopsis of the Fetterman Oh,
- 31:03Speaker 1: I shouldn't call it. It's it's euro it's eurocentric. To
- 31:07Speaker 1: called the Fetterman massacre. I take that back, be the
- 31:10Speaker 1: Fetterman fight. It wasn't Wyoming the UM. I believe it
- 31:14Speaker 1: was a Sioux they had. There was a military fort
- 31:17Speaker 1: that was, you know, very much imposing on their traditional lands,
- 31:25Speaker 1: trying to you know, telling the way that would be.
- 31:31Speaker 1: I'm leading so heavy into this. There's a military fort
- 31:35Speaker 1: and there's like a contest of the whole West is
- 31:37Speaker 1: in contention. Who owns the West? Yeah? Well, the U. S.
- 31:40Speaker 1: Military sets up this fort, which would be like an outpost.
- 31:43Speaker 1: Yeah in the brass the top brass is like, hey, man,
- 31:46Speaker 1: no matter what, don't go over the top of that hill.
- 31:49Speaker 1: And and you know, don't like, don't do it. But anyways,
- 31:52Speaker 1: there's some uh, some you guys right up on top
- 31:55Speaker 1: of the hill and they're like, hey, screw you or whatever,
- 31:58Speaker 1: and then they runoff over the back of the hill.
- 32:00Speaker 1: And Fetterman could be getting parts this round, but the
- 32:03Speaker 1: most of them not fetterman like gets the bright idea
- 32:05Speaker 1: to chase after him over the top of the hill,
- 32:07Speaker 1: and him and all of the boys vanished over the
- 32:09Speaker 1: top of the hill and never come back. And they
- 32:10Speaker 1: eventually wander up there, and I don't know how many
- 32:13Speaker 1: him or all in there, And he was the one.
- 32:17Speaker 1: I wish I had the quote exactly, but he was
- 32:19Speaker 1: very confident and he said with his force he could
- 32:22Speaker 1: ride through the whole student nation, and that he couldn't
- 32:25Speaker 1: make it over that couldn't make it. And Crazy Horse
- 32:30Speaker 1: was very involved in that battle. But he was one
- 32:34Speaker 1: of the the ones who did the planning to set
- 32:37Speaker 1: up that ambush and was one of the sort of
- 32:39Speaker 1: decoys who came out and let everybody back in. And
- 32:41Speaker 1: it was a multi day thing, right, Like this part
- 32:45Speaker 1: of it, this part of it was astonishingly quick, I think,
- 32:48Speaker 1: really because I thought they had shown up on that hill.
- 32:53Speaker 1: But I mean, yeah, the the actual yeah, there was
- 32:56Speaker 1: like there was some preceding stuff and they had been
- 32:58Speaker 1: taunting them and torment them, and some I went out
- 33:00Speaker 1: to cut wood, I think, and they killed a couple
- 33:02Speaker 1: of the guys that went out to cut wood, and
- 33:04Speaker 1: one thing led another. But when the main thing happened
- 33:06Speaker 1: was a very well laid trap. Yeah, yeah, we hand
- 33:10Speaker 1: to hand fighting. Drove out Ben and I been on
- 33:13Speaker 1: Brian and I drove out to that Vortex Extreme which
- 33:16Speaker 1: is in was outside of Douglas, Wyoming this year, and
- 33:20Speaker 1: so there's a lot of Fetterman stuff out there. So
- 33:23Speaker 1: I was relaying the story of the bound So I
- 33:25Speaker 1: was just trying to fight of his men. Oh yeah,
- 33:31Speaker 1: he talked to like any of your Wyoming buddies. It's
- 33:34Speaker 1: so funny because I love that stuff, and like you
- 33:37Speaker 1: can just see like eyes rolled back in people's heads.
- 33:39Speaker 1: Like every single year growing up in Wyoming, you gotta
- 33:43Speaker 1: go out to Fort Federman. I would love it. Uh,
- 33:49Speaker 1: why are we talking about that? Oh? He brought up
- 33:52Speaker 1: the Fetterman man. It was at McClean year after. I
- 33:57Speaker 1: just have certain bench. Did this guy get rich off
- 34:02Speaker 1: his game call patent? I mean he should have been
- 34:04Speaker 1: born about a hundred years later. I think, huh yeah.
- 34:08Speaker 1: A quick internet starch did not reveal any more information.
- 34:12Speaker 1: I do find it humorous here thought of that being
- 34:15Speaker 1: the rebel Yell. Can imagine eight dudes from across Yeah,
- 34:20Speaker 1: go to the w go to the n WTF convention.
- 34:24Speaker 1: What people silence blowing turkey calls song like probably rattle somebody,
- 34:29Speaker 1: Oh check this out, Watch this transition, watch this pivot.
- 34:34Speaker 1: So uh Fetterman right, that was part of the Sioux War. Okay,
- 34:43Speaker 1: and some of the participants at the Sioux War. You
- 34:47Speaker 1: guys tracking stay with some of the participants at the
- 34:49Speaker 1: Sioux some of the participants at the Fetterman fight. We're
- 34:53Speaker 1: involved in the battle a Little Big Horn. At the
- 34:57Speaker 1: battle a Little Big Horn, one thing survived. Captain Keo's
- 35:04Speaker 1: horse Comanche had like bullet holes arrow holes in it,
- 35:09Speaker 1: but lift Captain Keo was one of I think two
- 35:16Speaker 1: people whose bodies were not mutilated after the Little Big
- 35:19Speaker 1: Horn battle. One because he's under a pile of dead horses,
- 35:23Speaker 1: and that they it seems like they may didn't find
- 35:24Speaker 1: him down there and mutilate him. And Kio was unmutilated.
- 35:28Speaker 1: And Kio had some like Catholic some like Roman Catholic
- 35:33Speaker 1: clan type thing around his neck, some piece of jewelry
- 35:37Speaker 1: around his neck, and is a theory is that they
- 35:39Speaker 1: saw that and and I wondered if he was like
- 35:43Speaker 1: a religious figure or something, and perhaps didn't mutilate Keyo.
- 35:49Speaker 1: And during the punitive expeditions. Uh, when we came out
- 35:55Speaker 1: to them enact vengeance on the tribes that were involved
- 35:57Speaker 1: in the in the Custer Fight. We set up a
- 36:02Speaker 1: military fort in present day Miles City and they bestowed
- 36:06Speaker 1: upon that fort the name Captain Kia or Fort Kyo,
- 36:11Speaker 1: which brings up the Fort Kyo Gate situation, the Fort
- 36:16Speaker 1: Kyo fight, the Four Kyo fight. Well done, Yeah, that
- 36:20Speaker 1: was like well done. You want to talk about some
- 36:22Speaker 1: phenomenal hosting? Is there no bill prize and host I
- 36:26Speaker 1: was gonna ask, is there an awards? Is there like
- 36:29Speaker 1: a Pulitzer and hosting? Yes? Um Pulzer prize for hosting? Uh, cal,
- 36:36Speaker 1: go ahead, you're supposed to be all up speed on this. Yeah.
- 36:40Speaker 1: So uh interesting situation. There is a lonely but well
- 36:45Speaker 1: used or was well used at one point. Um boat
- 36:49Speaker 1: ramp river access Um that is actually on U. S.
- 36:54Speaker 1: D A property which is part of Is it an
- 36:58Speaker 1: experimental station out there? Is that? What? Yeah, it's a
- 37:00Speaker 1: research facility called for Kyo for Kyo Research Facility. Um,
- 37:05Speaker 1: they're right out outside of Myle City. But um, yeah,
- 37:08Speaker 1: they do a bunch of great work, man, I mean
- 37:10Speaker 1: they work, They do a lot of they do cattle work,
- 37:12Speaker 1: they genetic work, range range land stuff, invasive plants. There's
- 37:16Speaker 1: a lot of valuable work comes out of Fort Key
- 37:18Speaker 1: full ecosystem focus really I mean really neat stuff even
- 37:22Speaker 1: like I know that there's research that comes out of
- 37:25Speaker 1: there too. And you having to do with after a
- 37:27Speaker 1: coal mining operation, Um, best best ways to re establish
- 37:33Speaker 1: shrubs and forbes and things when when you're in the
- 37:36Speaker 1: remediation process, so like you know, clean up stuff afterwards,
- 37:40Speaker 1: not clean up, but getting robust plant ecosystems back in
- 37:43Speaker 1: shape and disturb ecosystems. Yeah, and and ecosystem not like monoculture.
- 37:50Speaker 1: Uh tons of work range land, rangeland cattle and what
- 37:53Speaker 1: cattle e yeah yeah um and uh yeah. So anyway,
- 37:58Speaker 1: there used to be uh you know, general public access
- 38:02Speaker 1: to this boat ramp. Then a couple of bad apples
- 38:07Speaker 1: spoiled that access by um doing what every Eastern Montana
- 38:11Speaker 1: kid knows not to do, which is go out and
- 38:13Speaker 1: drive around after it rains out there in the hot
- 38:16Speaker 1: dog and around egg fields, tore up egg fields, tore
- 38:19Speaker 1: up the road. Um, and you know, as a lot
- 38:22Speaker 1: of folks would do. They said, well enough of this
- 38:24Speaker 1: and they closed it off and then uh, a handful
- 38:28Speaker 1: of groups got together while I unlimited, um general maybe
- 38:33Speaker 1: there's a general sportsman's group for Miles City. Uh, the community,
- 38:38Speaker 1: a lot of community members, community members, a lot of
- 38:41Speaker 1: businesses within Miles City. Uh, backcountry hunters and anglers all
- 38:47Speaker 1: got together. They raised a little over ten grand I
- 38:50Speaker 1: believe too, for these very specific purpose of getting this
- 38:57Speaker 1: river access open to the public on by finding a
- 39:01Speaker 1: middle ground of installing a key code gate. So there's
- 39:06Speaker 1: some accountability for folks using the access because you would
- 39:11Speaker 1: have to call in get a code, probably provide your
- 39:15Speaker 1: license plate number als you're you know, fishing license number
- 39:19Speaker 1: or something like that, and uh, everything was good to go. Yeah,
- 39:24Speaker 1: and this is uh did you cover this? I feel
- 39:25Speaker 1: like you did that. There's not a lot of reliable Um,
- 39:29Speaker 1: there's not much reliable river access in this area because
- 39:31Speaker 1: the river fluctuates. Yes, it's a it's a wildly fluctuating
- 39:38Speaker 1: water level. Yeah, and so there's oftentimes not a good
- 39:41Speaker 1: place to launch. And this is like one that's like always,
- 39:43Speaker 1: no matter what the river is doing, you can launch here. Yeah.
- 39:45Speaker 1: And I want to say there's like seventy plus you
- 39:48Speaker 1: gotta go about seventy miles give or take to the
- 39:52Speaker 1: next like very reliable access unless you use this kind
- 39:56Speaker 1: of below water mark access with which is like kind
- 39:59Speaker 1: of the legal exactly. So um, it's always better to
- 40:04Speaker 1: have these established things. It's just better for for everything
- 40:07Speaker 1: centralizes the human impact on areas. So um, everything was
- 40:14Speaker 1: going around well, and then the U s d A
- 40:19Speaker 1: came to the conclusion that this that it had to
- 40:23Speaker 1: be done through slightly different means, and it really slowed
- 40:27Speaker 1: the process down. So you meanwhile, people have spent a
- 40:30Speaker 1: lot of money specifically to address the problem, and they
- 40:33Speaker 1: had the goal line like right there, it's like this
- 40:37Speaker 1: is going to be done by this date, and we
- 40:40Speaker 1: have this money very specifically. It's not just going to
- 40:43Speaker 1: this general pot, it's going to this very specific thing
- 40:45Speaker 1: that everybody wants and everybody's behind it. And here's this
- 40:48Speaker 1: date coming down the road, and you know, government just
- 40:51Speaker 1: doesn't move that fast. Um. And so they're trying to
- 40:56Speaker 1: get basically an easement through U s d A land
- 41:02Speaker 1: that I believe Montana Fishing Game would then be in
- 41:06Speaker 1: charge of that ease month and people trying to work
- 41:10Speaker 1: through sort of a legal process by which this could happen,
- 41:12Speaker 1: and this donated money you could get put to the purpose.
- 41:15Speaker 1: But as you can imagine, if you're Joe Walleye or
- 41:19Speaker 1: definitely Joe Ducker goose Hunter and the seasons coming down
- 41:24Speaker 1: the pipe, and you were all fired up about this
- 41:28Speaker 1: access and you probably pitched a couple of bucks in
- 41:30Speaker 1: the pot at a point night or something. Now you're
- 41:33Speaker 1: starting to get pretty piste and fingers are starting to
- 41:35Speaker 1: get pointed, and um so, what would be very very
- 41:40Speaker 1: helpful if you like to recreate UH in a smart
- 41:45Speaker 1: state like the state of Montana that has awesome water
- 41:48Speaker 1: access laws, I would be very helpful if you contacted
- 41:52Speaker 1: your duly elected officials or you know, if you happen
- 41:55Speaker 1: to know a guy who looks like or knows Sonny Perdue,
- 41:59Speaker 1: or or if you know Sonny Perdue, you may want
- 42:01Speaker 1: to give him a call. That would be extremely helpful.
- 42:04Speaker 1: Um Here in the state of Montana, if you got
- 42:06Speaker 1: a hold of Steve Danes, UH Senator tester or Greg
- 42:11Speaker 1: gene Forte and so the senators testers Senators Tester and
- 42:16Speaker 1: Danes Representative Greg gene Forte and asked him to try
- 42:20Speaker 1: to help work with h f w P. Your Montana, Fish,
- 42:25Speaker 1: Wildlife and Parks in the U. S d A r
- 42:27Speaker 1: S Regional Planes Office in Fort Collins, Colorado, try very
- 42:33Speaker 1: helpful to try to navigate this thing and figure out
- 42:35Speaker 1: something that's gonna work for everybody. And this is all
- 42:38Speaker 1: like a very positive thing, is just moving slow and
- 42:41Speaker 1: and um, we got a lot of really good intention
- 42:45Speaker 1: folks with their money tied up. Yeah, it's not like
- 42:47Speaker 1: there's not like a bad guy, and it's just a
- 42:49Speaker 1: matter of you know, you gotta have mechanisms in place
- 42:51Speaker 1: to do this kind of stuff. And I think that
- 42:53Speaker 1: at this point it just seems like a little bit
- 42:54Speaker 1: of political muscle would go a long way and helping
- 42:57Speaker 1: grease this up. Because again, man, you get people to
- 42:59Speaker 1: come together with like this real common calls, like who
- 43:01Speaker 1: can argue with you know, the importance of good river access. Man,
- 43:05Speaker 1: Like people came in and pitched in the money, and
- 43:07Speaker 1: it's just kind of a shame to have that pot
- 43:08Speaker 1: of money sitting there. Yeah. And and again, like anybody
- 43:11Speaker 1: who's built anything, like you know, eventually you hit a
- 43:15Speaker 1: few speed bumps that slows down that finished construction date. Um,
- 43:21Speaker 1: and that's really what's happening here. So but phone calls, emails. Um,
- 43:28Speaker 1: you know, and again, if you know some folks who
- 43:31Speaker 1: know the folks, UM, don't be afraid to give them
- 43:34Speaker 1: a shout. It's a real good deal. Oh yeah, you know.
- 43:38Speaker 1: There's one more thing you can do if you go
- 43:40Speaker 1: to www dot Backcountry hunters dot org forward slash open
- 43:46Speaker 1: for Kyo and uh. I guess it's important to note
- 43:49Speaker 1: that Kyo has spelled k e O g h Um.
- 43:53Speaker 1: There's a bunch of good information on the whole story
- 43:56Speaker 1: that I just told you, and I think it'll leaven
- 43:59Speaker 1: give you us some outreach options, ladies and gentlemen, Ryan Calahan,
- 44:04Speaker 1: Oh if you want more from Cal Cal's Weeken Review. Yeah,
- 44:07Speaker 1: just the only good thing on the internet, it's the
- 44:11Speaker 1: only thing on the Internet that is of any value,
- 44:14Speaker 1: is Cal's Weeken Review. It's now being used in school curriculums,
- 44:19Speaker 1: Is that right, Cal, Yeah, we got I would honestly,
- 44:24Speaker 1: I would love love, love love if the person who
- 44:29Speaker 1: wrote the iTunes review for Cal's Weeken Review, what that
- 44:33Speaker 1: says you are making this mandatory listening for your high
- 44:38Speaker 1: school science class out to me? Yeah. Cal's Weeking Review
- 44:43Speaker 1: is a weekly roundup of wildlife and science news. It's
- 44:47Speaker 1: fun and hopefully you learn some good things to kids
- 44:50Speaker 1: love it because it's got good sound effects. Yeah, Coty
- 44:53Speaker 1: of Phil fills the sound of the engineer. Okay, next
- 44:57Speaker 1: time we have to talk about is I got Um?
- 45:01Speaker 1: If you if you came to me and said, who's
- 45:03Speaker 1: the person you would who's the person that you would
- 45:10Speaker 1: uh least want to be unhappy with you? I would say,
- 45:18Speaker 1: like the Massad, he's really Massad. And then I'd say
- 45:24Speaker 1: Doug durn if it was personal, that's like what I
- 45:29Speaker 1: would like like that would be the order. I want
- 45:31Speaker 1: to know where I fall on the list. Oh you've
- 45:33Speaker 1: been mad at me before, haven't you? Yeah? I would
- 45:38Speaker 1: if someone told if I came in to where someone
- 45:40Speaker 1: like Yanni's Maddie, I'd be like, I'll talk to him.
- 45:42Speaker 1: What could be? Uh yeah, I wouldn't be like worried
- 45:45Speaker 1: about it. I feel like we'd get through it. Yeah,
- 45:47Speaker 1: for sure. Um, Doug's all mad at me because we
- 45:51Speaker 1: were talking to and we're doing something we don't normally do.
- 45:55Speaker 1: Is Doug dug Duran has joined us by phone? Um
- 45:58Speaker 1: we kind of ambushed him. We we were talking to
- 46:03Speaker 1: some guys, some q d M A on a on
- 46:05Speaker 1: a recent episode I think it's called the episodes called
- 46:08Speaker 1: Managing Bambi. We were talking about a lot of stuff
- 46:11Speaker 1: around whitetail deer. Um oh, because it's kind of a
- 46:15Speaker 1: crash course in all things white tail deer in the
- 46:17Speaker 1: news and whatnot. And I made a mistake. I made
- 46:21Speaker 1: a regrettable. I made a regrettable. I was, you know,
- 46:24Speaker 1: when you're trying to make a point now and then
- 46:26Speaker 1: and you kind of oversell the point. There should be
- 46:28Speaker 1: word for that. I remember Limbaugh would rush Limbaugh what
- 46:34Speaker 1: once said something it's not quite it. He said, like
- 46:36Speaker 1: demonstrating absurdity by being absurd, meaning you like when you're
- 46:41Speaker 1: like arguing, you float some like intentionally like absurd point
- 46:46Speaker 1: as a rhetorical strategy. And I had said how and
- 46:49Speaker 1: I somehow we got on c w D chronic wasting disease,
- 46:53Speaker 1: which is very serious, and I made some I made
- 46:56Speaker 1: a comment that I regret. It was like it didn't
- 46:58Speaker 1: didn't capture my sense. Meant, I made a comment I
- 47:00Speaker 1: regret where I said the only thing I'm worried about
- 47:03Speaker 1: was c w DS, that someone would catch it, that
- 47:06Speaker 1: it would jump the species barrier. And I had said
- 47:10Speaker 1: some stupid thing like, oh, there's all kinds of stuff
- 47:12Speaker 1: that there's all kinds of stuff that kills deer, so
- 47:14Speaker 1: who cares, It's just one more thing that kills deer.
- 47:16Speaker 1: And what the point I was trying to make and
- 47:18Speaker 1: I didn't make it? Well, the point I was trying
- 47:20Speaker 1: to make it, I guess it's like it was that
- 47:21Speaker 1: I was saying. The thing that really really scares me,
- 47:26Speaker 1: The thing that really really scares me is that hunters
- 47:32Speaker 1: um would contract chronic wasting and disease from eating dear meat.
- 47:37Speaker 1: Like that is extremely scary to me. And somehow some
- 47:41Speaker 1: people interpreted that to be that I don't take c
- 47:44Speaker 1: w D seriously or I don't think it's a serious thing,
- 47:46Speaker 1: or I'm somehow not concerned about it. It's like, that's
- 47:50Speaker 1: definitely not true. But the thing that most scares me,
- 47:55Speaker 1: the thing that most scares me, was that dear meat
- 47:59Speaker 1: would somehow be determined to be or it would become
- 48:03Speaker 1: um essentially inedible from infected animals that super like that, Like,
- 48:14Speaker 1: I feel that you could hold that belief and my
- 48:16Speaker 1: my feelings on CRD are more complicated than that, but
- 48:19Speaker 1: you could hold that belief and use just that as
- 48:23Speaker 1: a thing for all the reason in the world why
- 48:25Speaker 1: we should be researching, fighting, stopping prevention of So I
- 48:30Speaker 1: don't know how that got taken to be like, I'm
- 48:32Speaker 1: like light on my concerns about c w D. But Doug,
- 48:37Speaker 1: who's joining us here? Doug explained to me, like, let's
- 48:41Speaker 1: say God came down and said, I hereby declare that
- 48:48Speaker 1: humans cannot get c w D. I've designed this disease
- 48:52Speaker 1: to be uh incapable of infecting a human. Why would
- 48:59Speaker 1: people Why if you knew that to be true, why
- 49:04Speaker 1: does c w D matter? Well, first of all, I'd
- 49:10Speaker 1: like to say that, Um, if I was to make
- 49:14Speaker 1: a list of people who were upset with that, I
- 49:16Speaker 1: wouldn't want mad at me. The first one would be
- 49:18Speaker 1: my wife and the second one would be Steve or Ellis.
- 49:21Speaker 1: So I guess, yeah, don't kill you well, thinking not
- 49:27Speaker 1: my life. UM. So to answer your question, the UM,
- 49:34Speaker 1: you know there's and you know the other thing that
- 49:37Speaker 1: is that there's all kinds of stuff that that killed deer,
- 49:39Speaker 1: and that is very true, and all of the different
- 49:42Speaker 1: diseases that killed deer. UM don't do it in a
- 49:46Speaker 1: pretty way. UM h D doesn't kill them in a
- 49:48Speaker 1: pretty way. It kills them click. C w D doesn't
- 49:51Speaker 1: kill them in you know, there's no pretty way of
- 49:53Speaker 1: deer dying. So it's beyond that. C w D UM
- 49:58Speaker 1: has a has an impact on the resource that isn't
- 50:03Speaker 1: UM just short term, because it persists in the environment,
- 50:08Speaker 1: because it persists within the herd. Once you have it,
- 50:12Speaker 1: essentially don't get rid of it. So UM that then
- 50:18Speaker 1: goes on too. If you don't have it, you don't
- 50:20Speaker 1: want it in your area. Yeah, it's not like like
- 50:23Speaker 1: meaning like e h D or what you know people
- 50:25Speaker 1: call sometimes refer to as blue tongue, like it passes through.
- 50:29Speaker 1: It passes through, do you get sick and do you die?
- 50:32Speaker 1: It goes away and then maybe you don't see it
- 50:34Speaker 1: again for twenty years, right, And it's all dependent on
- 50:38Speaker 1: whether and that midge and drought and all of that.
- 50:40Speaker 1: And interestingly, one of the things that I've learned recently
- 50:43Speaker 1: about e h D was that there were deer that
- 50:47Speaker 1: we're taken from northern climates and taken to um Texas
- 50:51Speaker 1: and places like that for breeding purposes, and those deer
- 50:56Speaker 1: were insured UM their lives were insured, you know, like
- 51:00Speaker 1: loads of London or some a insurance company like that,
- 51:04Speaker 1: and they would take those deer too, um, someplace like
- 51:07Speaker 1: Texas where they didn't really have a problem with the
- 51:09Speaker 1: HD because the deer had developed an immunity to it.
- 51:12Speaker 1: Over time, they take these bucks down there for breeding purposes,
- 51:16Speaker 1: they get the h D and die and then they
- 51:19Speaker 1: were collecting on the insurance policy. And now they don't
- 51:22Speaker 1: insure dear anymore. But of course what also has changed
- 51:25Speaker 1: is they now take those dear two um a breeding
- 51:29Speaker 1: facility in a little tube. Um. They actually take semen
- 51:33Speaker 1: there um now, so that's one of the things that
- 51:35Speaker 1: they've learned in that. So that's that is a big difference.
- 51:37Speaker 1: That the h D dies out and then if the
- 51:41Speaker 1: conditions have to be right for it again to appear
- 51:44Speaker 1: again a drought condition. And actually, Spencer really really good
- 51:48Speaker 1: of summary about HD the other day that I read
- 51:51Speaker 1: on website that I thought was really good. Yeah at
- 51:54Speaker 1: the media or dot com ladies and gentlemen. Yeah. Um,
- 51:59Speaker 1: So that's the biggest thing. Once you have it, you
- 52:02Speaker 1: have it so then um, and then it's going to
- 52:06Speaker 1: well then and then can have an impact on the
- 52:09Speaker 1: resource for both in the short and long term. Umsults
- 52:13Speaker 1: of me here UM prevalence in bucks, and we talked
- 52:16Speaker 1: about this on that with the two m guys. That
- 52:19Speaker 1: prevalence has gotten real high assault of us. We have
- 52:21Speaker 1: all the prevalence in the box. Um one of the
- 52:26Speaker 1: landowners down there who has reached out to me and
- 52:28Speaker 1: I've spent some time with all his land for to
- 52:31Speaker 1: manage for big Bucks and and and balance hurt and
- 52:34Speaker 1: all those QTM ideas UM, and his essentially stays not.
- 52:40Speaker 1: We don't see big Box anywhere. They don't get UM
- 52:46Speaker 1: of the of the box on the ground at one
- 52:49Speaker 1: given time are infective with c w D, which is
- 52:52Speaker 1: always fatal. That are always that is always fatal. Prevalence
- 52:58Speaker 1: is of course based on the data that they have
- 53:01Speaker 1: and the number of tests, and they're able to extrapolate
- 53:04Speaker 1: all these numbers. UM, that prevalence is that box an
- 53:10Speaker 1: adult does. UM, it's less both in yearling bucks in
- 53:15Speaker 1: arling does. But it's even shown up uh down there
- 53:18Speaker 1: in phones as well. So if all these fatal to
- 53:20Speaker 1: zero disease that's going to kill that deer in two
- 53:23Speaker 1: years or something related to that disease, you know, it's
- 53:26Speaker 1: like it's sort of like um, oh cancer or you know,
- 53:31Speaker 1: any any other kind of thing you get, you get
- 53:33Speaker 1: stick from it, and you're as your immunity system, your
- 53:37Speaker 1: body becomes weaker and end up dying. Maybe you don't
- 53:39Speaker 1: die of cancer, or you don't die you don't die
- 53:42Speaker 1: of lung cancer as a smoker, but you die of
- 53:45Speaker 1: of uh you know something else that pneumonia commune system
- 53:50Speaker 1: and your body pneumonia exactly. And that's actually what a
- 53:52Speaker 1: fair number of deer um with c w D die
- 53:56Speaker 1: from is things like pneumonia, um uh, you know, um
- 54:03Speaker 1: choking on their own um, you know, spit, vomit, things
- 54:06Speaker 1: that are not vomit but their own bodily fluids, that
- 54:09Speaker 1: sort of thing, because they don't have that ability to
- 54:12Speaker 1: to do it anymore. So that idea that well deer aren't.
- 54:17Speaker 1: But that dear didn't die a CD. It got um it.
- 54:20Speaker 1: It's died in pneumonia or you know, it's it it
- 54:24Speaker 1: got killed by a predatory more easily because it's a
- 54:27Speaker 1: defense system is down't or because of what it does
- 54:31Speaker 1: to their brain. They have walked, you know, maybe walking
- 54:35Speaker 1: out on the highland moor or something like that. So
- 54:37Speaker 1: there's all the number of things that both sickness is
- 54:40Speaker 1: and other things that can happen UM as a result.
- 54:43Speaker 1: So if you wound up, go ahead, But because that
- 54:48Speaker 1: deal thinks, but because that deer is going to die
- 54:50Speaker 1: of the disease within two years, imagine a year old
- 54:54Speaker 1: or a year link bocker of another buck, he's not
- 54:58Speaker 1: gonna make it to be uh, he's not gonna make
- 55:01Speaker 1: it to be a three year old deer. And that's
- 55:03Speaker 1: what we're starting to see now. So even though in
- 55:06Speaker 1: our area they predicted or saltum here of the endemic
- 55:09Speaker 1: area when they predicted that um seventeen years ago, may
- 55:13Speaker 1: being the Department Natural Resources and some of the other
- 55:16Speaker 1: efforts that this is going to have a huge impact
- 55:18Speaker 1: on the deer. Our deer population is still going out.
- 55:20Speaker 1: But what's happened because we just have such a great
- 55:24Speaker 1: place for growing deer that the models didn't maybe take
- 55:28Speaker 1: that into consideration. But what is happening is trending to
- 55:31Speaker 1: a younger deer population. And then of course so UM,
- 55:39Speaker 1: so there's that. I mean, that's really the biggest the
- 55:41Speaker 1: bigger impact on the resource is UM. You know, it's
- 55:45Speaker 1: my concern and I think Matt from qd M A
- 55:48Speaker 1: who you know, it did a great job, and I
- 55:50Speaker 1: actually talked with him, uh currently regularly about listen some
- 55:54Speaker 1: other issues. Um did a great job of sort of explaining, uh,
- 55:59Speaker 1: you know, some of those those things after the fact.
- 56:02Speaker 1: So if if if I know you're out working right now,
- 56:06Speaker 1: but quick question for you and we'll pick this up
- 56:09Speaker 1: because you you know you've been you're on the show
- 56:11Speaker 1: all the time. We'll talk more about it, but real quick,
- 56:13Speaker 1: like you've you've emerged as like a c w D crusader,
- 56:18Speaker 1: right like you're like the you might even be looking
- 56:21Speaker 1: like some people in your area might think you're like
- 56:22Speaker 1: the crazy c w D guy because you're really driving
- 56:26Speaker 1: awareness in your area. And I don't I'm not trying
- 56:28Speaker 1: to joke, because you're doing it in a very constructive
- 56:31Speaker 1: way of really looking for striving for solutions and striving
- 56:35Speaker 1: for consensus. But that's why I ask out all fairness,
- 56:37Speaker 1: because you were like pissed at me about what I said,
- 56:40Speaker 1: because in some ways it would be that that you've
- 56:43Speaker 1: kind of made this in a way your your life's work,
- 56:45Speaker 1: and then someone like demeaning that. But if you knew,
- 56:48Speaker 1: if you were in the scenario where let's say you're
- 56:51Speaker 1: a ten right now, you're like a on a number
- 56:53Speaker 1: one to ten. You're a ten and your fight on
- 56:56Speaker 1: c w D. If you knew that there's no chance
- 57:01Speaker 1: for human infection, do you think you'd still be a ten?
- 57:03Speaker 1: Or would you honestly be down in the seven eight range?
- 57:10Speaker 1: UM one, I'd like to think I'm a CWD avenger
- 57:14Speaker 1: um and who I would be attend really And the
- 57:19Speaker 1: reason for it is the impact on the resource. It's conservation.
- 57:23Speaker 1: I yes, I concerned myself about um eating venison, um
- 57:28Speaker 1: and and people eating venison, but the fact that what
- 57:32Speaker 1: it does to what it does to individual dear, but
- 57:35Speaker 1: then also the impact on the resource. UM, I really
- 57:40Speaker 1: would I mean honestly, some of the things. I mean,
- 57:43Speaker 1: you know, I used to do buck management. We don't
- 57:45Speaker 1: do it anymore. I'd love to be able to do
- 57:46Speaker 1: that again. UM And could I and could I do that? Well?
- 57:49Speaker 1: Sure we would still have and we killed some nice
- 57:52Speaker 1: bucks here last year, but um we would still that
- 57:56Speaker 1: that would continue to happen. But as that prevalence gets
- 57:59Speaker 1: higher and high year, we um, dear are they're dying
- 58:03Speaker 1: and they're they're and they're not reaching those older ages.
- 58:06Speaker 1: So we're not getting to that older older age class,
- 58:08Speaker 1: which debate whether deer actually need to have age class
- 58:13Speaker 1: uh dear a trust all the age classes or not,
- 58:15Speaker 1: whether that's important the resource or not. But I'd love
- 58:19Speaker 1: to see that again. I mean, there's nothing like seeing
- 58:21Speaker 1: a big giant buck um And so yeah, I would
- 58:24Speaker 1: be concerned about it, and I would like to continue
- 58:27Speaker 1: to concer no matter what. I would want to control
- 58:30Speaker 1: prevalence um, so the percentage of gear that have it,
- 58:35Speaker 1: but then also the spread so that it's not going
- 58:38Speaker 1: on to the next place. You know. One of the
- 58:40Speaker 1: analogies that people have used is you keep your kids home, uh,
- 58:45Speaker 1: keep your kids home from school, and they're six, so
- 58:47Speaker 1: they don't go and in fact other other kids. And
- 58:49Speaker 1: we're kind of at the point here where on the
- 58:52Speaker 1: north edge of the of the streat of c w
- 58:55Speaker 1: D that I'm trying to keep your kids home from
- 58:57Speaker 1: school so that folks north of us of their kids
- 59:00Speaker 1: aren't getting six so they're dearing, kidding sick. So it
- 59:02Speaker 1: makes sense. No, it makes total sense. Man again, Doug Well,
- 59:07Speaker 1: I yeah, what you're on all the time. We'll have
- 59:10Speaker 1: you on again to talk more about this. Uh forgive
- 59:13Speaker 1: the have to do over the phone. But I said,
- 59:16Speaker 1: I got an email from Doug that said, this is
- 59:18Speaker 1: an email I'd never thought I'd need to write to you,
- 59:22Speaker 1: which is not how I like to start my morning.
- 59:26Speaker 1: Well are we do we still? We still love each other? Right?
- 59:31Speaker 1: I love you, man, I really do. And I appreciate this. Um,
- 59:35Speaker 1: I appreciate the call and the opportunity and and uh,
- 59:41Speaker 1: I apologize for being a little heavy handed with some
- 59:44Speaker 1: of that, but I UM, you know, as I think
- 59:46Speaker 1: I told you, I've gotten a lot of contacts about it,
- 59:48Speaker 1: and every time I did, I got upset with you
- 59:52Speaker 1: more than I should have. And I tried to get
- 59:53Speaker 1: people and I hope some people have written to meet
- 59:56Speaker 1: either because I said, look, let them know, not just me.
- 59:59Speaker 1: So yeah, it was. It was dumping to say it was.
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: It was, I was. I was making a point. I
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: should have said what really scares me or what especially
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: scares me? But yeah, yeah, and I UM, I also
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: want to say that in the of all of the
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: work that you've done in conservation and and everything you've
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: done for conservation and the voice that you are, it
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: pretty hard to to fault you when we're talking about
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: thirty seconds of time in a really a lifetime career
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: and uh so um that's I guess that's part of
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: the part of the deal. But I appreciate the opportunity.
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: And you know, I love you like a brother, as
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: as the case with some of those other guys there.
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: So um, thanks very much. All right, thanks Doug. We'll
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: talk about more. I was wanting to clear the air
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: because I haven't been able to sleep at night. Think
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: he didn't love me. Alright, talk to dog. All right,
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: we're walking the way out of here. Man, I got
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: that taking care of now. Okay, who uh do you
- 1:01:02Speaker 1: want to tell your elk story? So I tell my
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: elk story. Um, depends on what you're looking for. You know,
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: mine's a big, fancy private land scenario. You're a everyday man,
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: the nails, blue collar hero. Let's hear your fancy one. Um.
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: So I got like very spoiled spoiled kid, um chance
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: to go hunt a big private ranch that is owned
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: and operated by the Nature Conservancy in eastern Oregon. It's
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: called the zoom Walt Prairie Preserve, and their mission statement
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: out there is to preserve the last um largest contiguous
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: chunk of bunch grass prairie. Um bunch grass prairie ecosystem,
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: and it is uh, really gorgeous. It's right outside of
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: joseph An Enterprise, Oregon UM, which I understand are getting
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: like more popular with um like your Portlands tourist crowd
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: out there. So folks is kind of starting to discover
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: that area. And I actually have some friends with a
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: ranch in that same spots. I've been traveling out there,
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: uh you know, every other year or so, and and
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: it is big, like Feeder Stream tributary country for uh,
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: Snake River Hills Canyon, and it's like big. So you
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: have those big flat top plateaus and then these big
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: banded kind of cliff band grassy drops all the way
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: down into like really dried um kind of desert country. Yes,
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: that's stuff that It's like those one of those areas
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: where you feel like you're in the mountains because there's
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: so much topography, but then you realize there's no like uplift.
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: Oh yeah, it's just like it's like a flat thing
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: that's been washed away rather than a jaggy thing that's
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: been shelved up. Yeah, I mean it's yeah, you could
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: travel the tops in a mountain bike, you know, with
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: with no trail almost so um. But so they're there
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: to this big private chunk with an access component there
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: cowell hunters starting out there at the same time. I
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: was the opening day in that areas August August. But
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: like in Alaska, their full swing by them. But here
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: it seems it feels weird. Tolorado starts archery elk in August.
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: Are they hard horned? Yeah? Yeah, we we spotted a
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: few that were like still had plenty velvet hanging off
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: of them, you know, but they had started to shadows.
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: It was cool. Um, but um, big bachelor groups of
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: bulls and uh not all playing grab bass yet there
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: is like a little bit of that winding up and
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: it I mean I would tell anybody who can you know,
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: I mean you got to diversify and like watch those
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: animals every opportunity you get, because it's just like really neat,
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: interesting her dynamic stuff when all those bulls are together
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: and where you can see like how everybody beds down
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: and the biggest bowls are like so covered up by everybody. Yeah,
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: like I'll take the middle boys, yeah exactly. You know
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: that spot right next to the rock that you can't
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: really see what's coming up behind you? Why don't you
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: take that. I'm gonna be down here in this hole. Um.
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: And then yeah, they're like they'd get up and stretch,
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: and then they'd like look at each other and go
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: over there and like gently gently tap antlers together. For
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: then they'd be like, I'm gonna eat some more, um.
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: And then but then get like real aggressive on a
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: tree and then somebody. It was just interesting. Can you
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: just like see the wheels starting to turn? Like, oh God,
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: that makes me want to do something, but I know
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: it's not quite time yet, and it's super fun. And
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: I will tell you never felt like such a bugling
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: pro because every I would say of my bugles were
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: responded to. But they're just getting to where they feel
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: like they want a bugle. Yeah, and so you'd like
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: you'd bugle and be like bloo bloop bloop, but you know,
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: nobody's like what did you say. It's all like, yeah,
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: I'm over here. They're not oh no no, but they
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: like they like doing it. Yeah. It was I mean
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: it was fun and uh, certainly not a situation where
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: you have that monkey on your back. Like, boy, I
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: only got a couple of days and I haven't found
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: ELK yet. You know, like it was. It was pretty amazing.
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: One spotted a couple of raghorn bowls underneath the tree,
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: went over there, checked him out and started looking and
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: there's like sixteen bowls in there. Sixteen you know, you're
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: just like, oh my god, like giants too or what? Um? So,
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: according to Chad Dotson, who was a preserved steward, so
- 1:05:59Speaker 1: if you have an ANTLERD tag out on the preserve,
- 1:06:03Speaker 1: you have to be accompanied by a preserved steward. Um
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: for what purpose? Uh? I think it's it's purely because
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: those tags are UM such high value because they're they're
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: used as UM fundraiser tags for UM all these local
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: So basically it's set up UM like a grant, so
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: all the charities in that area can basically apply for
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: one of these tags to then use as a major
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: fundraiser for that group. But they want to prevent what
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: from happening. Well, I think it's it's more of like, hey,
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: you have this very special thing, we want to make
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: sure it's a special thing for you to kind of
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: maintain the value of the tag. UM. And so the
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: preserve stewards go out and they're like, you know, I
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: would probably hold off on shooting that bowl, because is
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: if we just look a little bit longer, we're gonna
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: find something bigger and something older. Yeah, presumably they know
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: all the property boundaries and yeah yeah, I definitely know
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: the property boundaries and and um the uh to get
- 1:07:15Speaker 1: elk living a long time out there too, and the
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: individual get old. Yeah, and they um part of the
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: deal out there, Like if you're a rifle hunter, you
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: got to use non let immunition. Um, everybody is required to.
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: There's a big survey questionnaire that you gotta fill out. Um,
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: after the hunt you gotta send in um tooth so
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: they can buy ops yet um and uh yeah, I
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: mean it's all it's super neat stuff and and really
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: cool program. Didn't you trip and fall and almost land
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: on a bear school? Yeah yeah yeah, which was just
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: like a total So the interesting part here is, yes,
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: I shot now turned out to not be a good shot,
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: Like the interesting stuff came after and um, so I
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: shoot the bowl. It was a twenty four yard shot.
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: How was another good shot? I thought the fell right off. Yeah,
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: but this is like all this after the fact stuff,
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: So you know, I have this great shot. I have
- 1:08:24Speaker 1: all the time in the world take my time well
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: within my comfort range with your curve bow. This was
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: with the long bow. UM, and I shoot the bowl
- 1:08:37Speaker 1: reacts the sound of the arrow hitting the bowl, it
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: was very familiar as like that sounds like a very
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: good shot. Um. Like sounded like bone and lung and
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: you know because it kind of had that like crunch
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: kind of sound to it. Um, that was my like
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: a little deflation type sound. And um. And the this
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: is a huge bodied bull and he's got this really
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: distinct old man bugle um. But then when he stepped out,
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: he's like like not that big of a antlerd bull, um,
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: but you know, too good to pass up. And the
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: bull reacts like he is immediately falling over. And he
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: runs and this on a very steep slope, like I said,
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: like on the edge of the canyon. And uh, he
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: reacts like he's fallen over the whole time, and running
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: faster than any healthy animal would down this slope. Then
- 1:09:37Speaker 1: all of a sudden, somehow hits the brakes, makes a
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: ninety degree turn, takes a couple of steps on this
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: what turns out to be a game trail, and disappears
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: from site. Um. At that point, i'd ripped a big bugle.
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: Uh yeah. My theory is like bugle, particularly with big
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: bulls after their hit, um, because I find that they
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: re act better too, like their anger sense of anger,
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: like think you might think he might pause him thinking
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: that another bull hit him, right, um and so and
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: he turned and hit that trail went out of sight
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: and I'm waiting and then I hear crack boom move
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: boom boom boom boom, and I kind of like laughed
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: to myself like it sounds like you fell all the
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: way to the bottom. Har har and he had he had. Yeah.
- 1:10:38Speaker 1: So there the and there's a lot of logistics talk
- 1:10:41Speaker 1: on this Boston aidlers all the way down and whatnot.
- 1:10:44Speaker 1: It is pitch black by the time I start trailing,
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: but because of that crashing noise, I'm very confident that
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: I'm going to recover the animal. Um. You know, up
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: until now, like everything's like out of a dusty playbook, right,
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: I'm like, oh, yeah, this is an area, so go down.
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: I find it was actually easier to track in the moonlight,
- 1:11:06Speaker 1: um oddly enough or not in the head lamp light, um,
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: because like there's so much elk signe over there. But
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: like the big digger marks of this bowl running so
- 1:11:17Speaker 1: crazy just seemed to pop out more in the head lamp,
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: more in the light. Yeah, and uh the more in
- 1:11:25Speaker 1: the head lamp. It was pitch black. There is no Yeah,
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: I'm sorry, I misspoke, and uh so I'm tracking him.
- 1:11:32Speaker 1: Then I find the arrow and I'm like, oh, that's
- 1:11:35Speaker 1: not good. First of all, I'm like, I am the
- 1:11:38Speaker 1: best tracker in the world. I found the arrow on
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: the pitch black, and then I look at the arraw
- 1:11:42Speaker 1: on I'm like, I am a terrible shot because I
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: ended up hitting him in the front low on the
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: front left leg. So I mean the bottom basically like
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: the bottom of the shoulder um above above the elbow um.
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: And uh that leg broke. Oh but it didn't break
- 1:12:10Speaker 1: on impact. It broke when he This is all right
- 1:12:15Speaker 1: my assumptions here of the data I collected. But it
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: broke once he took a couple of steps on that
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: game trail. Um and you know, I have the bone
- 1:12:25Speaker 1: with the broadhead in it, and there's a big spiral
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: fracture up and the break was actually below the impact
- 1:12:33Speaker 1: of the broadhead. And then that sent that bowl tumbling downhill.
- 1:12:38Speaker 1: That called him to fall off the cliff and he
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: fell off three cliffs and I'm you know, I'm picking
- 1:12:45Speaker 1: my way down through this stuff. But that whole bowl
- 1:12:48Speaker 1: and this is the biggest bodied elk I have ever
- 1:12:52Speaker 1: certainly ever taken myself. But that whole bowl was you know,
- 1:12:57Speaker 1: somewhere between six and ten ft off the ground three
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: different times. And uh, I had to have with a
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: mount and go at one time who was like thirteen
- 1:13:07Speaker 1: pounds or something to meat. This was the I wish
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: I could I do, wish I could somehow contextualize this
- 1:13:15Speaker 1: properly and then and then show the pictures online because
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: the trauma is is just ghastly. And I didn't make
- 1:13:24Speaker 1: the comment I'm like, man, I wonder if Oregon Fishing
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: Game would slip me a cow tag because I don't
- 1:13:29Speaker 1: know if any of this is going to be usable.
- 1:13:31Speaker 1: But the rock slides um that the bowl had to
- 1:13:36Speaker 1: have gone through. He was traveling so fast that there
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: was very very little blood. Um there was zero hair,
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: which I found just unbelievable. Um. But I at first
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: like like, well, this is the way he had to go,
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: and I can't find any sign of It's all active
- 1:13:56Speaker 1: rock slides, so they're all smooth, and and then I
- 1:14:00Speaker 1: see this rock that looks like somebody hit it with
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: a hammer, you know, like all chipped white and broken.
- 1:14:06Speaker 1: I'm like, what, it's odd. And then I look and
- 1:14:10Speaker 1: I'm shining the head lamp around, and I can see
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: the bright white inside of an antler, like the core
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: of the antler is shining bright white. It's like reflective almost,
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: And I'm like, oh, okay, well, here's a chunk of
- 1:14:27Speaker 1: an antler. And then there's a chunk of an antler,
- 1:14:29Speaker 1: and then there's a chunk and then I can see
- 1:14:34Speaker 1: like more busted rock, just same same way, like you're
- 1:14:38Speaker 1: just whacking it with a hammer every ten ft. And
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: then I can see the roots of a tree tipped
- 1:14:44Speaker 1: over and I'm like, oh, that's fresh. And then yeah,
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: that was like really every bit of ten feet. But
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: I'm trying to like his body hit the tree and
- 1:14:53Speaker 1: uproot of the tree. Yeah, And then off this major
- 1:14:57Speaker 1: cliff and then and I have to like jump down
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: probably like a five ft drop section, and I'm trying
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: not to fall and slide off, and I look between
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: my feet and there's like a pinky size tip of
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: a horn, tip of an antler tip right in between
- 1:15:15Speaker 1: my feet and I'm like, oh, one piece of a time,
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: um like that Johnny Cash song and uh, I can't
- 1:15:23Speaker 1: stand that song. They's fitting under these circumstances, man, and
- 1:15:28Speaker 1: uh and yeah. So then I continue down the slide path.
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: But it's just so odd, right, and it's like that
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: when you're tracking at night. I'm like, Okay, here he's
- 1:15:38Speaker 1: gonna be and then he's no elt. I'm like, there's
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: just it's not I have dropped so much elevation, right,
- 1:15:46Speaker 1: And I'm always like very hesitant to drop elevation unless
- 1:15:49Speaker 1: I really know, but I'm so I'm crossing little side
- 1:15:54Speaker 1: gaps off the list and then going down and then
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: all of a sudden go through this next cliff band
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: and I slip and fall hard, and I look over
- 1:16:05Speaker 1: with my head lamp and there's this bear skull just
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: grinning at me. It's awful ominous warning. Warning really gave
- 1:16:17Speaker 1: me a stop, right, And it's like that bear had
- 1:16:21Speaker 1: laid down and died right there, because it is just perfect,
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: and like the canines sitting there eyes looking at me,
- 1:16:30Speaker 1: or the sockets looking at me, and he says, your
- 1:16:32Speaker 1: bullet is gone, and I was just like, you know,
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: I just it was like, what put you and me
- 1:16:38Speaker 1: here at the same same time? Like you should spot
- 1:16:42Speaker 1: I shouldn't be here or something, and so yeah, that
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: kind of just threw me for a loop, um, because
- 1:16:49Speaker 1: when do you ever see that? And I'd go a
- 1:16:53Speaker 1: little bit further. At that point, Um, Chad and uh
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: Waring had gotten all the way around to the bottom,
- 1:17:03Speaker 1: so they'd gone all the way to the back, and
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: I was like, hey, grab my chainsaw, um grab you know,
- 1:17:09Speaker 1: here's like the list of things to chaw for because
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: I didn't know the condition of the two track road
- 1:17:15Speaker 1: in the bottom. Um if we could use that saw
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: to like cut some dead timber out of the way
- 1:17:20Speaker 1: or just make things easier, you know, And they had
- 1:17:21Speaker 1: to go through there anyway, so I figured why not? Um,
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: And you know, at this point, I'm like two yards
- 1:17:29Speaker 1: off the bottom, like the bottom bottom, and Chad starts
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: hiking up and about a hundred feet from like the
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: actual creek bottom is that bowl all piled up? And
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: so he actually got to him before I did. In
- 1:17:45Speaker 1: a total mess. Yeah, in in a in a total
- 1:17:49Speaker 1: mass man. And just yes, that bowl could have been
- 1:17:52Speaker 1: a six by six, but now it's a two by three,
- 1:17:57Speaker 1: two by four. If the way it bro you would
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: count like the continuation of the main beam as a point.
- 1:18:07Speaker 1: There's the sheared off part of the main beam as
- 1:18:09Speaker 1: a point. Yeah, so um, what a disaster. Yeah. And
- 1:18:14Speaker 1: the thing is huge, like it is a huge bowl
- 1:18:17Speaker 1: and man, start cutting that thing and like and I
- 1:18:22Speaker 1: made the comment, I'm like, man, it looks like you
- 1:18:24Speaker 1: got shot with a shotgun because it's just like peppered
- 1:18:28Speaker 1: from that ride down the mountain. And uh so I
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: start at the anus, right and I'm cut up and
- 1:18:37Speaker 1: I start peeling that hideback and it you know, all
- 1:18:40Speaker 1: these bowls I've been watching through the phone scope and
- 1:18:43Speaker 1: like watching for days, and I'm just remarking the whole
- 1:18:46Speaker 1: time how fat they are. Oh my god, look at
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: the fat, Like you can see it ripple, you know,
- 1:18:51Speaker 1: And that's just not something you see even early in
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: that typical archery season because they've been doing a lot
- 1:18:57Speaker 1: of running and um, and this fat is like obliterated.
- 1:19:03Speaker 1: It is particulate fat. Oh like that was the cushion
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: and it is a mess and it's got awful and
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: I'm just sick to my stomach. But then you kind
- 1:19:15Speaker 1: of get through that that layer of fascia um right
- 1:19:18Speaker 1: above the meat, and everything started looking clean. Um. But
- 1:19:22Speaker 1: I just yeah, the pictures are yeah, I mean I
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: sent you guys. I think your honest is like what
- 1:19:27Speaker 1: am I looking at? It's just like but like the
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: anus was blown out of it. All the ribs were
- 1:19:33Speaker 1: broken right below the spine on one side. On the
- 1:19:37Speaker 1: opposite side. When I started to cut the loin out, Um,
- 1:19:43Speaker 1: I made like half a cut in that fashion layer
- 1:19:47Speaker 1: and the loin just dropped into my hands like it
- 1:19:49Speaker 1: had come It had detached from the spine and the ribs. Um.
- 1:19:54Speaker 1: You know. It's well, I think I told you probably
- 1:19:56Speaker 1: ten times. But when I had that mountain goat that fell,
- 1:20:00Speaker 1: its skull was opened, its brain was gone, and I
- 1:20:04Speaker 1: found its long tucked tucked up between its shank and
- 1:20:07Speaker 1: it's hide no his ankle, yeah, man, no skinning, no
- 1:20:15Speaker 1: necessary skinning coasts. The hide, it completely separated, was just
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: held on by the hoofs. Wow. No, but yeah, so
- 1:20:22Speaker 1: I didn't. This is just kind of one of those things, right,
- 1:20:26Speaker 1: It's like, uh, who knows, like the thing it's just
- 1:20:31Speaker 1: there's not a lot there's not like a lot of
- 1:20:33Speaker 1: lessons to learn here. I think the lesson is like,
- 1:20:36Speaker 1: had you just taken it at phase value and like
- 1:20:39Speaker 1: not being a heart eater, you would have been like, oh,
- 1:20:42Speaker 1: slipped her through the shoulder and whacked him in the heart.
- 1:20:45Speaker 1: But I dug the heart out and I'm like, there
- 1:20:49Speaker 1: is definitely not a broad head hole in this thing. Um,
- 1:20:52Speaker 1: I did find bruising inside the heart. And I asked
- 1:20:57Speaker 1: e m T. Buddy, I'm like, you, uh, figure like
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: if there's a cardiac arrest type situation, they'll be bruising
- 1:21:07Speaker 1: inside the heart. And uh, he said, typically it comes
- 1:21:10Speaker 1: from a blockage outside the heart, and so there's not
- 1:21:14Speaker 1: bruising inside the heart. But maybe somebody can write in
- 1:21:16Speaker 1: and let us know about that, Like really old Elk
- 1:21:19Speaker 1: freaked out had a heart attack, and that's you know.
- 1:21:22Speaker 1: But so you're you're saying this because you don't know
- 1:21:24Speaker 1: what killed it, that the arrow placement may have killed
- 1:21:29Speaker 1: it eventually, but it didn't kill it that fast, and
- 1:21:32Speaker 1: it fell. The lesson to be learned or the takeaway
- 1:21:36Speaker 1: from me or ad is like you aren't as good
- 1:21:38Speaker 1: as you think you are with that bow because you
- 1:21:40Speaker 1: definitely made a mistake. So um, that's that's a good
- 1:21:44Speaker 1: lesson and I got really freaking lucky. Man, So did
- 1:21:48Speaker 1: you try any of the meat yet? All I've all
- 1:21:52Speaker 1: I have eaten as the heart. And then I had
- 1:21:54Speaker 1: a couple of friends in town um that weekend, and
- 1:21:59Speaker 1: they helped, but true, and so I sent them with
- 1:22:02Speaker 1: some of the meat. Um, and they were there for
- 1:22:04Speaker 1: the butchering job. But like inside those loins there would
- 1:22:07Speaker 1: be um just if they it looked like actual like
- 1:22:12Speaker 1: burst blood vessels. And and so they they actually, um,
- 1:22:19Speaker 1: they were there like camping across the country, and they
- 1:22:23Speaker 1: cooked it up and they said it was really good,
- 1:22:25Speaker 1: exceptionally tender. But yeah, man, I mean and that's I'll
- 1:22:30Speaker 1: take a pack of that. That's yeah, definitely the I
- 1:22:34Speaker 1: don't know, I I one another takeaway is like you
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: just you're never as long as you hunt as many
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: of these scenarios as you see, they're all unique, and
- 1:22:43Speaker 1: you're never gonna get to a point where you're like, oh, yeah,
- 1:22:47Speaker 1: I've seen that, let me tell you what happened, you know.
- 1:22:49Speaker 1: So I like that part of last time I had
- 1:22:51Speaker 1: a big bull fall off cliff. Yeah, but we figured, um,
- 1:22:57Speaker 1: you know, every every bit of six vertical feet that bowl.
- 1:23:00Speaker 1: So yeah, yeah, you think about that filled the engineer. Uh,
- 1:23:09Speaker 1: I don't know. If it were on tracks, would be
- 1:23:10Speaker 1: a fun roller coaster. It sounds like the best phils got. Wow.
- 1:23:17Speaker 1: Did you like that story? Yeah, yeah, it was great.
- 1:23:20Speaker 1: I had heard some of some of it before, but
- 1:23:22Speaker 1: the bare skull is new. Like like that touch, that's
- 1:23:24Speaker 1: a good one. Yeah. So you're enjoining yourself down here, Yeah,
- 1:23:27Speaker 1: having a great time and it's so hot, you know,
- 1:23:30Speaker 1: we're we got that thing back and got the meat
- 1:23:33Speaker 1: all hung up cooling. Um uh three am. It was
- 1:23:41Speaker 1: probably in bed by a four am. Yeah. That's that's
- 1:23:45Speaker 1: what you sign up for when you're shooting bowls at
- 1:23:47Speaker 1: night and in the heat. Right. So I hate doing
- 1:23:52Speaker 1: that too, Like I've I've called her quits early many
- 1:23:56Speaker 1: nights because I'm like, man, I just don't feel like
- 1:23:58Speaker 1: doing that whole situation up. Man. Um, you know, next
- 1:24:04Speaker 1: week when we're hunting out together, I sure hope you
- 1:24:06Speaker 1: kill one in the morning and makes life that much easier.
- 1:24:09Speaker 1: That's that's the story I'm gonna tell right now. But
- 1:24:13Speaker 1: me and my brother went out elk hunting. You could
- 1:24:15Speaker 1: start off saying, let me tell you how it should be.
- 1:24:18Speaker 1: Let me tell you how it should work. So we uh,
- 1:24:24Speaker 1: opening morning here just not too long ago, oh a
- 1:24:28Speaker 1: week ago, where the hell was a little over a
- 1:24:31Speaker 1: week ago? Um, no week will be tomorrow week. Tomorrow. Well,
- 1:24:36Speaker 1: it opens on Saturday. And we on Friday night, not filming,
- 1:24:39Speaker 1: just out monkeying around like the old days. We on
- 1:24:42Speaker 1: Friday night in the afternoon start. We had we had
- 1:24:47Speaker 1: his llamas with us, We had four pack llamas, and
- 1:24:50Speaker 1: we started hiking up into the mountains to an area
- 1:24:51Speaker 1: he wanted to go and hit. Um. We start in
- 1:24:56Speaker 1: the afternoon is rainings, all muddy and just kind of nasty,
- 1:25:00Speaker 1: but we knew he had a good day touch nasty
- 1:25:02Speaker 1: weather that I was even looking at you guys, going man,
- 1:25:05Speaker 1: you might want to change direction to help change locations,
- 1:25:08Speaker 1: because it looks like a real ship day to walk
- 1:25:10Speaker 1: into the starting when you gotta like get when you
- 1:25:12Speaker 1: get out of the trunk and it's pouring rain and
- 1:25:13Speaker 1: you're going back in for a couple of nights. And
- 1:25:15Speaker 1: so I was like, oh really, but then you can't
- 1:25:17Speaker 1: back out because then what's the point being alive? So
- 1:25:21Speaker 1: we started going, um, and we get into an area
- 1:25:24Speaker 1: where he thinks, like he's expecting we should be seeing something,
- 1:25:29Speaker 1: seeing hearing something, seeing something. But then it's like hard
- 1:25:32Speaker 1: to rule out because well, it's raining. At first. He's like, man,
- 1:25:35Speaker 1: rains really putting them down, you know, like they're not out.
- 1:25:37Speaker 1: But then all of a sudden, it was like like
- 1:25:41Speaker 1: the sky's part and it's like this beautiful evening and
- 1:25:44Speaker 1: we're sitting there as it gets dusk and we got
- 1:25:48Speaker 1: a good advantage and just just like nothing nothing. So
- 1:25:52Speaker 1: nick is dark and we kick around like, man, you know,
- 1:25:54Speaker 1: maybe they'll be out in the morning. But we decided
- 1:25:56Speaker 1: to keep walking. And we walked another couple hours through
- 1:26:00Speaker 1: the dark, and um got the point where about seven
- 1:26:03Speaker 1: miles from where we parked, and then we were starting
- 1:26:08Speaker 1: to hear some ripping. Um like good buglan and set
- 1:26:15Speaker 1: up and slept there for the night, got up in
- 1:26:18Speaker 1: the morning and just kind of like got out of
- 1:26:21Speaker 1: eight in the morning, not eight in the morning. But
- 1:26:24Speaker 1: we ate breakfast in the morning, you know, we ate,
- 1:26:27Speaker 1: you know. Uh. That was pretty damn good man. Was
- 1:26:30Speaker 1: it a bunch of sinew and normal matt meal? No,
- 1:26:35Speaker 1: because I brought it. It was that what was that?
- 1:26:37Speaker 1: What's the heathers or pantry? Oh my head, there's choice.
- 1:26:41Speaker 1: The breakfast, dude, they're like rockets. That was good. We
- 1:26:46Speaker 1: ate some of those. I brought some of those. Yeah,
- 1:26:48Speaker 1: and Matt or beating like sin you. Oh you know
- 1:26:51Speaker 1: another quick Matt story. He doesn't normally eat. I don't
- 1:26:54Speaker 1: think he doesn't like to eat. He used he still
- 1:26:56Speaker 1: uses an old school alcohol stove, which I like. I
- 1:27:00Speaker 1: was like, hey, want me to grab my jet boil
- 1:27:01Speaker 1: and he goes no, because I like it to be
- 1:27:03Speaker 1: quiet when I'm cooking. I want to listen for bugles.
- 1:27:07Speaker 1: And he uses the alcohol because it makes zero noise
- 1:27:10Speaker 1: like at jet boils loud. Yes, but I would argue
- 1:27:13Speaker 1: that it's so such an inefficient use of time that
- 1:27:17Speaker 1: that jet louder jet boys. Sure, you might be not
- 1:27:19Speaker 1: hearing something for about two minutes, but at least you
- 1:27:22Speaker 1: get to eat before ten pm. Were you writing on
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: that alcohol stove man dinners late? Yeah, but he said
- 1:27:28Speaker 1: I pressed him on it. He said, I'm never in
- 1:27:30Speaker 1: a hurry, and when I'm cooking, I want to listen
- 1:27:33Speaker 1: for bugles. He just likes his alcohol sol but I
- 1:27:35Speaker 1: didn't argue with him. He likes algoslo. But he told
- 1:27:37Speaker 1: me a great story. He carries with them a portable
- 1:27:43Speaker 1: bow press. Have you seen one of these? Oh, it's
- 1:27:47Speaker 1: like a cable with a little screw attachment on the
- 1:27:51Speaker 1: hand crank. He carries a portable bow press with the
- 1:27:54Speaker 1: mountain the woods. Somehow he got he had ran into
- 1:27:57Speaker 1: some problem and wished he had one. Oh he was
- 1:27:59Speaker 1: with his white fue time and something happened and his
- 1:28:01Speaker 1: bow popped off. The came off one of the cams,
- 1:28:05Speaker 1: and him and his wife were able to rastle that
- 1:28:06Speaker 1: bow back into submission and got it real strong. So
- 1:28:10Speaker 1: then she goes out and buys him a portable bow press.
- 1:28:13Speaker 1: And he's working a group of elk. This is not
- 1:28:15Speaker 1: our this is this is just him alone. He's out
- 1:28:17Speaker 1: working a group of elk with and he had his
- 1:28:19Speaker 1: portable bull press and his wife bought for him with him.
- 1:28:23Speaker 1: He's working a group of elk and slips on a
- 1:28:25Speaker 1: rock and a stream channel and falls down and busts
- 1:28:28Speaker 1: the peep site off his bowstring. And he carries like
- 1:28:32Speaker 1: basic stuff like anybody was. But he doesn't care like
- 1:28:34Speaker 1: who carries an extra peeps Like maybe I'm sure thousands
- 1:28:37Speaker 1: of thousands of people do, but he doesn't have extra
- 1:28:39Speaker 1: peeps like check this out he's way to hell Bag
- 1:28:42Speaker 1: in the mountains. His peep site broke. He starts looking
- 1:28:46Speaker 1: around through all his gear and realizes that the button
- 1:28:49Speaker 1: on his pants has like that little rim around the periphery.
- 1:28:55Speaker 1: M okay hollows out the hole in the button i
- 1:29:00Speaker 1: his pants, takes his portable bull press and installs his
- 1:29:06Speaker 1: pants button in as his peep site, and then shoots
- 1:29:12Speaker 1: and kills a bull with it. Got some real stuff, right,
- 1:29:17Speaker 1: there's some woodsman show kills a bull and never never
- 1:29:22Speaker 1: say die, sony out. We get in the morning and
- 1:29:25Speaker 1: we start working these bulls and we're like it was
- 1:29:28Speaker 1: it was like, you know, like those days. It's like
- 1:29:30Speaker 1: the daisy dream of having right knowing around. We got
- 1:29:36Speaker 1: three bulls out in front of us, ripping, and all
- 1:29:38Speaker 1: of a sudden, we're like trying to keep track of
- 1:29:40Speaker 1: who's where Cole's going off, and also there's another bull
- 1:29:43Speaker 1: coming from behind us. We reposition like this. This new
- 1:29:49Speaker 1: bulls like shows up out of nowhere, bugling. He kind
- 1:29:53Speaker 1: of sweeps through it sort of bypasses us, but like
- 1:29:56Speaker 1: he's bypasses us because there's this whole circus going on
- 1:29:59Speaker 1: out in front of us, and he's like coming to
- 1:30:00Speaker 1: join the good times. But the main good times there
- 1:30:04Speaker 1: are the bulls that are in front of us, not us,
- 1:30:06Speaker 1: and he kind of but he still comes through, past
- 1:30:09Speaker 1: through the hundred yards, goes into join the whole ship
- 1:30:13Speaker 1: show going on out in front of us. Eventually, like
- 1:30:16Speaker 1: some of these more vocal bowls, they seem to go
- 1:30:18Speaker 1: up this slope. We're kind of looking down into a bottom,
- 1:30:22Speaker 1: and we were like they kind of bugle up and over,
- 1:30:24Speaker 1: and Matt he knows the area a little bit. He's like, man,
- 1:30:27Speaker 1: he goes, I know, I bad know where they're going.
- 1:30:29Speaker 1: So we circle around to try to get out ahead
- 1:30:33Speaker 1: of him, thinking like we'll just get out ahead him
- 1:30:34Speaker 1: and try to set up again. And we look across
- 1:30:36Speaker 1: the drainage and find this other bowl bedded down out
- 1:30:40Speaker 1: in the open, like and it's overcast, it's a cool day,
- 1:30:43Speaker 1: and uh, he just beat it out and the open
- 1:30:45Speaker 1: with two cows feeding right next to him, and we're
- 1:30:48Speaker 1: good looking at him all right, man, that thing the
- 1:30:50Speaker 1: way he's positioned, like the land features are such that
- 1:30:53Speaker 1: you just know right where he is, Like it's like
- 1:30:56Speaker 1: so obvious where he is. And there's this cliff band
- 1:30:58Speaker 1: behind him, and we just drop everything and circle back around.
- 1:31:03Speaker 1: It takes us about thirty minutes, and we just know
- 1:31:06Speaker 1: exactly where he is because the landscape features are like
- 1:31:08Speaker 1: you just can't mess it up. So we go back
- 1:31:11Speaker 1: around and get up on this cliff band above him,
- 1:31:15Speaker 1: and we know that we're a hundred ten yards. We
- 1:31:18Speaker 1: tell we're a hundred ten yards when we know that
- 1:31:19Speaker 1: bulls betted. And I'm on top of this little rock
- 1:31:23Speaker 1: pile cliff band. It's not big. You could throw a rock,
- 1:31:26Speaker 1: you know, and hit a grouse off the edge of
- 1:31:27Speaker 1: the cliff band. It's not too far. But I'm up there.
- 1:31:32Speaker 1: And Matt creeps down to the foot of the cliff band,
- 1:31:35Speaker 1: thinking there's no way, you know, to take like a
- 1:31:38Speaker 1: act of god right to call the bull up through
- 1:31:40Speaker 1: this thing. But he gets down in there and he
- 1:31:44Speaker 1: and he realized once he downs, he goes, man, I
- 1:31:46Speaker 1: feel like I could, He said, I could recognize the
- 1:31:48Speaker 1: tree that bowl was on under and I even thought
- 1:31:53Speaker 1: I could see part of it. It wasn't sure I
- 1:31:55Speaker 1: could see part of it. And I ripped a bugle
- 1:31:57Speaker 1: and he said, he's still like he's still trying to
- 1:31:59Speaker 1: be like is that the he goaes the minute I bagle,
- 1:32:01Speaker 1: that thing just stands up and beagles in his coming,
- 1:32:05Speaker 1: like just coming coming so hard that he draws his
- 1:32:08Speaker 1: bow back. Its because he doesn't want to have to
- 1:32:10Speaker 1: get busted when he goes to draw his bow back.
- 1:32:11Speaker 1: Did you even try? A cow calls, I was doing
- 1:32:14Speaker 1: the whole littany, I was doing, Yanni potell Us. It
- 1:32:17Speaker 1: wasn't until you bugle that he came. I feel like
- 1:32:22Speaker 1: the first thing I did. I know, the first thing
- 1:32:26Speaker 1: I did was ripped a bugle. I was doing a combo,
- 1:32:30Speaker 1: Yanni Phelps. The only thing that made it not a
- 1:32:34Speaker 1: Yanni p tells is I wasn't beating brush yet, but
- 1:32:37Speaker 1: I was gonna get to that in a minute. He
- 1:32:38Speaker 1: hadn't rolled. He probably didn't want rolling rocks And knowing
- 1:32:43Speaker 1: I got his damn dog tied up. So he hunts
- 1:32:45Speaker 1: that little dog. And the dog such a low riding dog,
- 1:32:48Speaker 1: that little corky the elk can't usually see it anyway,
- 1:32:50Speaker 1: And the dog like is the most obedient dog in
- 1:32:52Speaker 1: the world. He like, he goes so much like to
- 1:32:54Speaker 1: that dog. That dog stands behind him and walks behind
- 1:32:56Speaker 1: him like the dog knows what's up, and he knows
- 1:32:59Speaker 1: you're hunt Elk. He's part of the team. Part of
- 1:33:02Speaker 1: the team. But because we got two of us, and
- 1:33:04Speaker 1: and I'm calling and Matt's going out ahead, I grab
- 1:33:09Speaker 1: that dog's colling. The dog attacks me because he doesn't
- 1:33:12Speaker 1: like to be fired. He doesn't like to be far
- 1:33:13Speaker 1: from Matt. So I took a chunk of para cord
- 1:33:15Speaker 1: and tied a slipknot around that dog's neck so he
- 1:33:17Speaker 1: couldn't get away without strangling himself. And I tied him
- 1:33:21Speaker 1: to a bush. And at one point I was trying
- 1:33:23Speaker 1: to get a look down in there to see what's
- 1:33:25Speaker 1: going on, and I left forward. Bro that broke the
- 1:33:27Speaker 1: dog's heart because he's like, now that my owner's gone,
- 1:33:30Speaker 1: now this guy is leaving too. And I'm tied to
- 1:33:32Speaker 1: a noose. So then I backed up, and I felt
- 1:33:34Speaker 1: so bad for the dog. Just give me this horrible look.
- 1:33:36Speaker 1: But um yeah, so he's as Susie biggle, then I was.
- 1:33:39Speaker 1: Then I was calling to because then he starts bugling
- 1:33:40Speaker 1: and I can hear him down there just ripping. So
- 1:33:42Speaker 1: then I'm doing the whole I'm just making the whole show.
- 1:33:45Speaker 1: And mattes he draws back the bull acrosses in front
- 1:33:48Speaker 1: him at thirty two yards and he's gonna walk right through,
- 1:33:52Speaker 1: and Matt just game a little whistle noise just because
- 1:33:55Speaker 1: just to stop him. The bull stops and Matt shoots,
- 1:33:59Speaker 1: and I hear like the shot, I hear the boom,
- 1:34:01Speaker 1: the pumpkin thump, and I'm like, hell yeah, man, I
- 1:34:04Speaker 1: come running down and Matt's all distraught, see like he
- 1:34:08Speaker 1: didn't see the arrow hit. And he's like, man, I
- 1:34:11Speaker 1: feel like if it like if it didn't hit where
- 1:34:13Speaker 1: I was looking, I don't know where, you know. He's
- 1:34:15Speaker 1: all worked up. The dog. He's trying to trail the
- 1:34:18Speaker 1: out the dogs like already gone because his dog is
- 1:34:21Speaker 1: a trail. This dog trails elk. He like his dog
- 1:34:23Speaker 1: is incredible shifty. So he's like telling his dog to
- 1:34:28Speaker 1: get back. And we went and took a nap on
- 1:34:29Speaker 1: a rock um and I'm laying there taking my nap
- 1:34:33Speaker 1: and one point looking at dogs. It's got his nose
- 1:34:35Speaker 1: up in the air and his dog is like dying
- 1:34:36Speaker 1: to go, and he's like just sniffing air. And I
- 1:34:39Speaker 1: stipped to him like it smells like a dead whatever
- 1:34:41Speaker 1: a dead bull smells like. It smells like a dead bull.
- 1:34:44Speaker 1: It smells like hot blood bull is like the strongest,
- 1:34:49Speaker 1: most potent elk smell you could smell. And even the
- 1:34:53Speaker 1: dogs like, dude, what in the world, what are these
- 1:34:55Speaker 1: guys doing? And Matt's like curled up and think about
- 1:34:58Speaker 1: taking a picture of Matt sleeping out of in the
- 1:35:00Speaker 1: fetal position, and you know, you always go to negativity, know,
- 1:35:03Speaker 1: because it's the best place to go. Uh. And meanwhile,
- 1:35:07Speaker 1: the things just laying dead right there, like it wrapped
- 1:35:09Speaker 1: around the hill and fell over dead. And so when
- 1:35:11Speaker 1: I'm laying there thinking, like my god, that smells like
- 1:35:13Speaker 1: the windward shifting. I get the smell like that has
- 1:35:16Speaker 1: to be like an elk right there, We're laying like
- 1:35:18Speaker 1: forty yards from this elk was just like right there. Yeah,
- 1:35:21Speaker 1: because the way we went to find a rock to
- 1:35:24Speaker 1: sleep on, like when he shot the bull, the bull
- 1:35:25Speaker 1: wrapped around a little mound and we kind of went
- 1:35:28Speaker 1: on the mound, do you know what I'm saying. Then
- 1:35:32Speaker 1: we went like back down off the mound fund the
- 1:35:34Speaker 1: blood trail and basically wrapped around and a half loop
- 1:35:37Speaker 1: to like back around it almost like where we just were.
- 1:35:41Speaker 1: And we're going at first, there's no blood mats like
- 1:35:43Speaker 1: I knew it. I blew it on the worst person
- 1:35:45Speaker 1: on the planet. But also there's like a big pile
- 1:35:47Speaker 1: of blood, and I'm thinking, because I'm already in a
- 1:35:49Speaker 1: spotted negativity feeding off his negativity, that you don't even
- 1:35:52Speaker 1: get a bad hit on something that there's like no blood.
- 1:35:55Speaker 1: But then you find blood. It's only because it stood
- 1:35:57Speaker 1: there for an hour trying to figure out what's going on,
- 1:36:00Speaker 1: and you find that pile of blood, and you're like,
- 1:36:02Speaker 1: this will be the last blood we find, because he
- 1:36:04Speaker 1: stopped and stood here for forty five minutes seeing what's
- 1:36:07Speaker 1: going on, and then he clots up and walks off,
- 1:36:09Speaker 1: and it was just a muscle wound. And we see
- 1:36:12Speaker 1: this big pile of blood. And then I almost got
- 1:36:15Speaker 1: like a more negative feeling because I was like, oh,
- 1:36:17Speaker 1: he's stopped and stood. It's never good when they stop
- 1:36:20Speaker 1: and stand. But then I look and the dogs licking
- 1:36:22Speaker 1: up a pile of blood looks like the size of
- 1:36:24Speaker 1: a TV tray, and the dogs like eating blood. And
- 1:36:29Speaker 1: then the dog moves along and I look and here's
- 1:36:31Speaker 1: the bull all tangled up. I mean, this thing was
- 1:36:33Speaker 1: like we're like taking a nap like this, just like
- 1:36:36Speaker 1: it's all like very confined. It was all this right there.
- 1:36:38Speaker 1: He's just like land here dead or dead. I don't
- 1:36:39Speaker 1: know how he didn't hear it. Pilo got it all
- 1:36:42Speaker 1: caught up and Matt have any uh. He he gave
- 1:36:46Speaker 1: me a He gave me a hug. He wanted to
- 1:36:48Speaker 1: have a hug. He gave me a long hug. Mean
- 1:36:52Speaker 1: while the damn dog doesn't even realize that elk standing
- 1:36:54Speaker 1: there because the dog wants to eat all the blood
- 1:36:56Speaker 1: as it goes along. So it's like laughing up blood,
- 1:36:58Speaker 1: bulls lander every He's all happy. He had a big hug,
- 1:37:02Speaker 1: cut it all up when got his llamas um, brought
- 1:37:05Speaker 1: it back to where we were sleeping, hung it up
- 1:37:07Speaker 1: in a tree. Get the alcohol in a tree, so
- 1:37:11Speaker 1: let us go have a look. Worked another bowl, no
- 1:37:14Speaker 1: screaming his face off. He comes and I couldn't see
- 1:37:17Speaker 1: in the way he came in. He probably came seventy
- 1:37:18Speaker 1: seventy yards before he goldsted off, slept, woke up, and
- 1:37:22Speaker 1: here's where the here's what the bad part of the
- 1:37:23Speaker 1: story happens. All night. I can't sleep because the bulls
- 1:37:27Speaker 1: ripping like it's like they're it's like they're ripping in
- 1:37:31Speaker 1: our in our tent man, and then coles keep getting
- 1:37:36Speaker 1: like they know we're like sleeping there, so like you're
- 1:37:39Speaker 1: like you fall asleep and a like warning barking. You
- 1:37:43Speaker 1: think like they're all gonna leave, but they like don't leave.
- 1:37:46Speaker 1: It's the weird night. And I'm just like, dude, this
- 1:37:48Speaker 1: is the most amazing thing. And we get up and
- 1:37:52Speaker 1: we had to be hunting this place where is a
- 1:37:53Speaker 1: there's like there's seasonal motorized motorized used through this area
- 1:37:59Speaker 1: and this this kind of such a weird story. Man,
- 1:38:02Speaker 1: I almost hesitated to get into it. There's an outfitter
- 1:38:05Speaker 1: to hunts this area, but he does drop camp stuff.
- 1:38:07Speaker 1: But he has this very big gass drop camp and
- 1:38:10Speaker 1: he generally hikes in hike hunters and sets up this
- 1:38:13Speaker 1: big drop camp and guys hunt out of this big
- 1:38:15Speaker 1: drop camp. Somehow, this guy he used to not allow
- 1:38:19Speaker 1: dudes to do this, but somehow he opened it up
- 1:38:20Speaker 1: and allows motorcycle guys. Now, like a horse pack in
- 1:38:27Speaker 1: drop camp inhabited by guys on dirt bikes. Yeah, it's
- 1:38:34Speaker 1: just right. Whatever whatever he used not allowed, now he
- 1:38:37Speaker 1: allows it, right, Okay, so he'll pack in a big
- 1:38:40Speaker 1: he'll pack in his wall, tense and everything established this
- 1:38:44Speaker 1: big base camp where he can go fetch elk on mules.
- 1:38:48Speaker 1: But then guys can ride into the camp on dirt
- 1:38:50Speaker 1: bikes because they're scared of grizzlies. So they like to
- 1:38:54Speaker 1: have a big, elaborate place to go sleep at night
- 1:38:56Speaker 1: where they don't have to be scared of grizzlies. They
- 1:38:59Speaker 1: don't want to sleep out like just out in the mountains.
- 1:39:01Speaker 1: They want to sleep at like a big place with
- 1:39:02Speaker 1: all this hubbub going on. Yeah, and he's got a
- 1:39:05Speaker 1: big guy. He's got a big electric fence around the camp. Yeah.
- 1:39:08Speaker 1: So these guys, these dirt bike guys, are scared of grizzlies,
- 1:39:11Speaker 1: but they want to hunt the area. One of these
- 1:39:13Speaker 1: guys was saying once that he can't even go, uh,
- 1:39:16Speaker 1: he can't even go drop a deuce without bringing someone
- 1:39:19Speaker 1: with me, so scared of grizzlies. So he's not that's
- 1:39:23Speaker 1: not a comfortable experience. Now, and we're in this meadow
- 1:39:26Speaker 1: and he's elkmen ripping online in this meadow, and we
- 1:39:28Speaker 1: get up in the dark and we're getting we go
- 1:39:30Speaker 1: up into the edge of the timber, so we're looking
- 1:39:32Speaker 1: down and we're like, Okay, as soon as the light
- 1:39:34Speaker 1: comes up, we're gonna see what's going on and make
- 1:39:37Speaker 1: a plan and all some and again, man, this trail
- 1:39:43Speaker 1: is open up until something it's seasonally open, not to
- 1:39:47Speaker 1: its seasonally opened up to dirt bikes. And Matt's like
- 1:39:52Speaker 1: he just wants to drift off the trail, and I'm like,
- 1:39:55Speaker 1: I'm like mildly annoyed, and I stopped and express my
- 1:39:58Speaker 1: annoyance to the dirt biker. But it's like I feel
- 1:40:02Speaker 1: bad about it because it is legal. But it's like,
- 1:40:05Speaker 1: it'd be legal for me to be up there with
- 1:40:06Speaker 1: a marching band. Uh If if I determined that it
- 1:40:14Speaker 1: was most effective to hunt with a marching band, it
- 1:40:18Speaker 1: would be legal for me to be up there with
- 1:40:20Speaker 1: a marching band. It's not illegal as long as you're
- 1:40:23Speaker 1: not having like a gathering for oh, exp'd be oversized. Okay,
- 1:40:29Speaker 1: I could legally be up there with a five man
- 1:40:31Speaker 1: marching band with a trumpeter, like like I could have
- 1:40:34Speaker 1: a trumpeter, I could have the cavalry. I'm not breaking law.
- 1:40:36Speaker 1: So it's like we're not debating legality. It's not. It's like, sure,
- 1:40:41Speaker 1: there's all kinds of stuff that's legal, But is it
- 1:40:43Speaker 1: smart when you're in like the prime and I know
- 1:40:47Speaker 1: where they camp there's we're in it. The elk eventually
- 1:40:50Speaker 1: move out, but they're in it, Like is that smart? Like?
- 1:40:54Speaker 1: Or is it better to maybe wait till eleven in
- 1:40:56Speaker 1: the morning and do your travel on a motor cycle
- 1:41:00Speaker 1: and not blow through and you can't hear the thing.
- 1:41:03Speaker 1: It's hunting spots or hunting elk, right, It's like you
- 1:41:07Speaker 1: when you're when you're on it, you can't hear bugling,
- 1:41:11Speaker 1: so you're blowing through. You're you're like, you're blowing through
- 1:41:16Speaker 1: a meadow. Were elker ripping and you don't know they're ripping?
- 1:41:20Speaker 1: It's just what you said. The guy's hunting a spot,
- 1:41:23Speaker 1: he's not hunting elk, right, So he's like, I go
- 1:41:26Speaker 1: to this spot and there's usually elk there, so I
- 1:41:28Speaker 1: gotta get to that spot. And by making that choice,
- 1:41:32Speaker 1: you have then eliminated for most circumstances, you've you've eliminated
- 1:41:40Speaker 1: hunting elk in the transition zone between trailhead and the
- 1:41:45Speaker 1: spot that you're going. No, I feel horrible about it.
- 1:41:48Speaker 1: I feel horrible about you said where are you camping?
- 1:41:51Speaker 1: I said, right here? But did you ask the guy
- 1:41:55Speaker 1: what his motivation was to be ripped? Ripping on the
- 1:41:58Speaker 1: said he's headed off, he goes old works, we're headed
- 1:42:02Speaker 1: But yeah, I mean, how would he know. I just
- 1:42:04Speaker 1: feel bad about it. I feel bad about it. It
- 1:42:06Speaker 1: is because I've been at trailheads. I killed the bowl,
- 1:42:10Speaker 1: none of the we're nowhere near a trailhead. Um, but
- 1:42:14Speaker 1: I started at a trailhead with a guy unloading his
- 1:42:18Speaker 1: motorbike and I've thrown my backpack and start as I
- 1:42:22Speaker 1: have to go down the trail, and he gets like, well,
- 1:42:24Speaker 1: where are you going. I'm like, well, I'm heading down
- 1:42:27Speaker 1: the trail till I hear a bugle. Well, I was
- 1:42:29Speaker 1: going down this trail. I was like, man, you can.
- 1:42:32Speaker 1: And I knew that country very well, and I'm like,
- 1:42:35Speaker 1: you can drive a hundred and fifty miles on this trail.
- 1:42:41Speaker 1: I'm like, ums around, I'm not, I'm not gonna get
- 1:42:46Speaker 1: that far. I'm like, I'm sure you're gonna get further
- 1:42:49Speaker 1: than I am. Um, you know it's pitch black and
- 1:42:53Speaker 1: and um. I never did see the guy that that day,
- 1:42:56Speaker 1: but went about, um, several miles further than I should do,
- 1:43:01Speaker 1: and I killed a bowl that morning. Yeah, I don't
- 1:43:05Speaker 1: know what. I still don't know. I feel, like I said,
- 1:43:06Speaker 1: I feel guilty about it, because like you know, I
- 1:43:08Speaker 1: feel guilty about it, but I also feel like, come
- 1:43:10Speaker 1: on man, Yeah, but I mean that's the nice part though,
- 1:43:14Speaker 1: is you know that they're gonna miss plenty of opportunities
- 1:43:17Speaker 1: using that means to travel, and they're gonna find opportunities
- 1:43:20Speaker 1: that you're not using that means to travel. Yeah, the
- 1:43:23Speaker 1: smart thing would have been just to do it, just
- 1:43:25Speaker 1: to slip off, just the ghost off the trail and
- 1:43:28Speaker 1: then rip a big old bugle. What if he wasn't
- 1:43:30Speaker 1: hunting and he just decided to be at dawn, I
- 1:43:34Speaker 1: wouldn't have cared at all. Right, there's plenty of dudes
- 1:43:37Speaker 1: in those little evil kinevil suits driving those trails, and
- 1:43:39Speaker 1: during the daytime a motorbikes. I would look like, that's
- 1:43:44Speaker 1: not even that's not my business. Is like, yeah, there's
- 1:43:47Speaker 1: plenty of pleasure riders. But the thing the assumption you
- 1:43:49Speaker 1: make is like they're usually in the cold gray light
- 1:43:53Speaker 1: of dawn. Turn it out right, they kind of go
- 1:43:58Speaker 1: there like they ride out in the daytime pleasure cruising.
- 1:44:01Speaker 1: That's what struck me as weird as like you're hunting,
- 1:44:05Speaker 1: you're hunting that zoom Walt deal. We would get up
- 1:44:08Speaker 1: at normal wear ely archery, elk season hunting time, you know,
- 1:44:16Speaker 1: four am, wake up, and then basically have get our
- 1:44:22Speaker 1: gear ready, get sandwiches ready for the day. I have
- 1:44:25Speaker 1: a couple of cups coffee, wait for it to start
- 1:44:29Speaker 1: getting light, and then get going, just based off the
- 1:44:34Speaker 1: fact that we know if we tried to go anywhere
- 1:44:38Speaker 1: at night, we'd be bumping out the whole time. You know,
- 1:44:42Speaker 1: me and Yanni were in the exact opposite situation yesterday
- 1:44:44Speaker 1: where we were we went out in the morning to
- 1:44:47Speaker 1: a state chunk to do some rifle shooting. We met
- 1:44:50Speaker 1: up there at seven thirty am to do some gun shooting,
- 1:44:53Speaker 1: and it turns out there there was some dudes trying
- 1:44:57Speaker 1: to bow hunt, just eight section and they came and
- 1:45:01Speaker 1: expressed there. One of them came and expressed his displeasure. Yeah,
- 1:45:05Speaker 1: seven thirty in the morning, you gotta come out shooting guns. Yeah,
- 1:45:10Speaker 1: early September multi use and we're kind of like, yeah,
- 1:45:15Speaker 1: I got you, I got you. It's like I wasn't
- 1:45:19Speaker 1: like it's legal. I was like, yeah, that kind of
- 1:45:24Speaker 1: made me feel bad. It kind of makes me feel
- 1:45:26Speaker 1: like dah now for sure. And the thing is too, like,
- 1:45:29Speaker 1: if there had been any sign I think that somebody
- 1:45:31Speaker 1: was haunting it, we probably would have made Plan B. Definitely,
- 1:45:34Speaker 1: you know, but there we had no idea. No, and
- 1:45:37Speaker 1: if I had known, you know. But then I was like,
- 1:45:39Speaker 1: you know, it says you have these weird interactions. It's
- 1:45:41Speaker 1: it'd always be better if someone could tell you, hey,
- 1:45:43Speaker 1: tomorrow you're gonna have a weird interaction and here's what's
- 1:45:46Speaker 1: gonna happen. Then you can plan out like, oh, here's
- 1:45:48Speaker 1: what I'll do when I had that interaction, I'll be
- 1:45:50Speaker 1: real cool. Yeah, and I'll have you know, I'll express
- 1:45:54Speaker 1: this complex. That wouldn't be much fun. He said, you're
- 1:45:57Speaker 1: like dah legal. One last question here. I know we
- 1:46:05Speaker 1: got to wrap it up, but um, did you miss
- 1:46:08Speaker 1: your production crew? No? Just your brother. No, I didn't
- 1:46:13Speaker 1: miss anything about it. I took some cell phone videos.
- 1:46:17Speaker 1: It was so good being back out with my brother. Yeah, dude,
- 1:46:23Speaker 1: it was so good. That's why I didn't even want
- 1:46:24Speaker 1: to shoot. I just wanted to have, you know, let
- 1:46:29Speaker 1: him you know, party wasn't thinking if I just nose
- 1:46:33Speaker 1: over this Cliff a little bit. I might be able
- 1:46:34Speaker 1: to snag that bowl out from I was enjoying myself
- 1:46:37Speaker 1: so much I didn't want to shoot. That's awesome. I
- 1:46:41Speaker 1: love it, dude. It was fun. Man. He's a good hunter. Man. Yeah,
- 1:46:46Speaker 1: he's a good hunter, like just because like the just
- 1:46:49Speaker 1: the girl I love map out there an enormous amount
- 1:46:57Speaker 1: of gur It sounds like a headcase. So like he
- 1:47:01Speaker 1: does a lot of Like, dude, he bowls, having beat
- 1:47:03Speaker 1: before he gets on the trail. No, he's like mad Jack.
- 1:47:06Speaker 1: Remember Grizzly Adams. Yeah, he's like a crazy guy. Water
- 1:47:10Speaker 1: and the hill man, I'm sure he's got I'm sure
- 1:47:12Speaker 1: to be like. Oh, and there's an insane person that
- 1:47:14Speaker 1: wanders the hills out here. You'll see him. He uses
- 1:47:16Speaker 1: an alcohol stove and takes his time cooking. Yeah, like
- 1:47:20Speaker 1: to listen for bugles. He's got a button for he's
- 1:47:23Speaker 1: got his pants button. And you'll know his camp because
- 1:47:27Speaker 1: there would be fifty half gallon bottles of vodka and
- 1:47:32Speaker 1: gins thrown about. But he's not drinking at all. No,
- 1:47:35Speaker 1: he's for carrying water. That's one thing I laughed about
- 1:47:38Speaker 1: because he when he packs him as long as they
- 1:47:40Speaker 1: got they don't have that much to carry. So he
- 1:47:41Speaker 1: packs in tons of water and he drinks gin and tonics,
- 1:47:45Speaker 1: and so all his water bottles are two Leader tonic
- 1:47:48Speaker 1: bottles and in half gallon vodka bottles. And if you look,
- 1:47:52Speaker 1: you can see the ratio when he empties his panniers out,
- 1:47:55Speaker 1: you can see the ratio of like his ratio of vodka,
- 1:47:57Speaker 1: like it takes him like three. It takes him like
- 1:48:02Speaker 1: three two lead bottles a tonic to get through a
- 1:48:05Speaker 1: half gallon of vodka. So the ratio is like fixed
- 1:48:08Speaker 1: would be like six half gallons of vodka and eighteen
- 1:48:13Speaker 1: bottles of tonic, all full of drinking waters in a pile.
- 1:48:16Speaker 1: He just like throws him in a big pile. You're
- 1:48:18Speaker 1: always looking at a good time, are you? If you
- 1:48:21Speaker 1: roll'd be like one of these alcoholics. But they're all
- 1:48:24Speaker 1: like you can tell, he's been using all these bottles
- 1:48:26Speaker 1: for like years. At one time got him turned down
- 1:48:30Speaker 1: to these army water bottles, and he had some reason
- 1:48:32Speaker 1: he didn't like him, like he didn't like he's like
- 1:48:34Speaker 1: he much prefers a good two Leader bottle with the
- 1:48:37Speaker 1: label still at it. Dude, he's a good hunter man.
- 1:48:41Speaker 1: He's good hunter. He's good hunter because he's like methodic.
- 1:48:45Speaker 1: He's just a good hunter because just like the girl,
- 1:48:49Speaker 1: he just just goes and goes and goes and doesn't care.
- 1:48:55Speaker 1: It's like you could be like, oh, you know if
- 1:48:57Speaker 1: you woke up and someone stole his boot. Right, he's
- 1:49:01Speaker 1: just being but he's prepared for it. He's prepared. My
- 1:49:05Speaker 1: boot's gone and he would just still hunt. Man, he's
- 1:49:08Speaker 1: prepared for that. With the way at the rate that
- 1:49:10Speaker 1: he loses pieces of gear, he usually has two or
- 1:49:13Speaker 1: three pairs of foot wear with him. Yeah, he'd like
- 1:49:17Speaker 1: kill a lum and rapids, hide around his foot and
- 1:49:20Speaker 1: hunt another couple of days. Yeah, that cracks me up. Man,
- 1:49:23Speaker 1: get to taken care of thom. Uh yeah, good jobs.
- 1:49:28Speaker 1: That's probably the first boy you've ever called in for
- 1:49:31Speaker 1: for a kill. Yeah yeah, yeah, good job. I learned everything.
- 1:49:35Speaker 1: I learned everything. It's pretty sweet Montana home coming, right,
- 1:49:40Speaker 1: that's your first now, because we used to go out
- 1:49:42Speaker 1: and just try to get out and we killed elk
- 1:49:44Speaker 1: like that, but just go out and get out in
- 1:49:45Speaker 1: front of him and then that doesn't work and get
- 1:49:47Speaker 1: out in front of them. But dude, it's so much
- 1:49:48Speaker 1: more fun. So much more fun, cool cool, so much
- 1:49:53Speaker 1: more fun. Things last longer. Oh yeah, when I first
