- 0:36Speaker 3: A man walks into a hardware store holding a broken
- 0:39Speaker 3: toilet seat in his hand. He walks up to the
- 0:42Speaker 3: counter and says, I need to return this. The cashier
- 0:46Speaker 3: looks at the seat. It's cracked right down the middle.
- 0:49Speaker 3: She asked what happened to it. The man says, I
- 0:54Speaker 3: was sitting on it, minding my own business and it
- 0:58Speaker 3: just split in half. The cashier nods, okay, do you
- 1:03Speaker 3: have the receipt? He frowns no, but I'm hoping you'll
- 1:07Speaker 3: still take it back. She gives him a skeptical look
- 1:11Speaker 3: and says, sir, you brought back half a toilet seat
- 1:16Speaker 3: with no receipt, and you're hoping we'll give you a
- 1:19Speaker 3: new one. The man smiles and says, well, I'm an optimist.
- 1:33Speaker 3: Welcome to this week's episode of Positively three sixty five,
- 1:38Speaker 3: the podcast that reminds you that there's still good in
- 1:41Speaker 3: the world and in you every single day. I'm your host,
- 1:46Speaker 3: Joe Wattis, and today's topic is one that often gets
- 1:50Speaker 3: confused with wishful thinking optimism. Optimism isn't about ignoring the
- 1:57Speaker 3: hard stuff. It's the belief that somehow, some way we'll
- 2:02Speaker 3: find our way through it. It's hope with boots on.
- 2:07Speaker 3: Before we explore how optimism changes not just our outlook,
- 2:12Speaker 3: but our outcomes. Here's today's trivia question. Are you ready
- 2:16Speaker 3: for it? Here it is which famous inventor one said,
- 2:21Speaker 3: I've not failed, I've just tried ten thousand ways that
- 2:27Speaker 3: won't work. Think about it. We'll have the answer when
- 2:32Speaker 3: we come back. Hey, they're amazing listeners. Are you looking
- 2:42Speaker 3: for your next great read? Dive into the world of

- 4:03Speaker 3: You'll be so glad you did now, Thanks for listening
- 4:07Speaker 3: and happy reading. Welcome back. Do you know the answer
- 4:17Speaker 3: to this week's trivia question? The question was which famous
- 4:22Speaker 3: inventor once said, I have not failed. I've just found
- 4:26Speaker 3: ten thousand ways that won't work. The answer Thomas Edison.
- 4:32Speaker 3: Edison said this during the long process of inventing the
- 4:35Speaker 3: electric light bulb. He faced countless setbacks, materials that didn't work,
- 4:41Speaker 3: designs that failed, systems that burned out, but he never
- 4:46Speaker 3: saw those as failures, just feedback, just steps forward. That
- 4:52Speaker 3: quote is pure optimism, not delusion, but determination. Optimism gets
- 5:04Speaker 3: a bad rap. Sometimes people think it's all sunshine and denial,
- 5:09Speaker 3: ignoring problems and pretending everything's fine. But real optimism isn't
- 5:15Speaker 3: about pretending. It's about choosing to believe that challenges are temporary,
- 5:21Speaker 3: that growth is possible, and that the future holds something
- 5:25Speaker 3: worth working for. Optimism doesn't say this is easy. It
- 5:31Speaker 3: says this is hard, but I still believe it's worth trying.
- 5:35Speaker 3: Studies show that optimistic people are more likely to recover
- 5:40Speaker 3: from illness, cope better with stress, and even live longer.
- 5:44Speaker 3: Why because their mindset gives them momentum. Optimism gives us energy.
- 5:52Speaker 3: It opens our minds to solutions. It says this might
- 5:56Speaker 3: not be the end. This might be the beginning of
- 6:00Speaker 3: something newer, something better. That's not naive, that's powerful. Let
- 6:20Speaker 3: me close this week's episode with a little short story.
- 6:24Speaker 3: There's a farmer whose horse runs away. His neighbors say, oh, no,
- 6:29Speaker 3: what bad luck. The farmer shrugs and says maybe. The
- 6:34Speaker 3: next day, the horse returns and brings back three wild
- 6:38Speaker 3: horses with it. The neighbors say, wow, what good luck.
- 6:43Speaker 3: The farmer replies maybe. The following day, the farmer's son
- 6:48Speaker 3: tries to ride one of the wild horses and breaks
- 6:51Speaker 3: his leg. Again. The neighbors say, oh, no, such bad luck.
- 6:56Speaker 3: The farmer says maybe. Soon after, the army comes to town,
- 7:01Speaker 3: drafting all the young men for war, but they skip
- 7:05Speaker 3: the farmer's son because of his broken leg. You get
- 7:09Speaker 3: the idea. The story reminds us. We don't always know
- 7:14Speaker 3: what things mean in the moment, but when we choose optimism,
- 7:19Speaker 3: we give life the benefit of the doubt. We stay
- 7:23Speaker 3: open to the possibility, we keep moving forward. So today,
- 7:28Speaker 3: try this. When something goes wrong, pause and say, maybe
- 7:34Speaker 3: we'll see what happens next. That's optimism in action, not
- 7:39Speaker 3: because we know how the story ends, but because we
- 7:42Speaker 3: trust that there's more to come. Thanks for listening to
- 7:47Speaker 3: Positively three sixty five. Look for the good, expect the best,
