- 0:00Speaker 1: Ohio State travels to Iowa this weekend in our Big
- 0:05Speaker 1: Ten segment presented by Prize Picks. Tom, get us started
- 0:10Speaker 1: here on the Big Ten.
- 0:15Speaker 2: On mute again. On mute.
- 0:17Speaker 3: Pulling a Bud Elliott here. Shut up, Bud. I love
- 0:22Speaker 3: Cover 3.
- 0:24Speaker 4: Man, I've said for a long time, at Kinnick is
- 0:27Speaker 4: a terrifying pair of words when it comes to Big
- 0:29Speaker 4: Ten football. it doesn't feel as terrifying so far this
- 0:32Speaker 4: year for Iowa. It's just not the same Kirk Ferentz team.
- 0:36Speaker 4: And granted, this is a team that is coming off
- 0:38Speaker 4: of an emotional last second victory against Michigan in the
- 0:42Speaker 4: big house, a forward pass touchdown to win the game
- 0:46Speaker 4: of all things for Iowa.
- 0:48Speaker 3: Here's the thing. Iowa would need to make her cry.
- 0:52Speaker 4: They made Kirk Ferentz cry and happy tears, happy crocodile tears.
- 0:56Speaker 5: Happy tears.
- 0:57Speaker 4: He cries a lot though. I, Iowa, unconventionally, is not
- 1:00Speaker 4: running the ball well this year. The offensive line is
- 1:03Speaker 4: not what it's been in years past. They still produce
- 1:05Speaker 4: fantastic offensive linemen. It's just not what it's been. And
- 1:08Speaker 4: I don't think the running back talent is the same
- 1:10Speaker 4: as it's been. Ironically, Hank Brown in the passing game
- 1:13Speaker 4: has been kind of pushing this offense forward, but it's
- 1:15Speaker 4: not even necessarily an offense where they're putting up tons
- 1:17Speaker 4: of points, right?
- 1:18Speaker 3: At least against, you know, top flight competition.
- 1:21Speaker 4: I don't know necessarily where the points are going to
- 1:23Speaker 4: come from for Iowa in this game. We know when
- 1:26Speaker 4: it comes to Kirk Ferentz, you have to play all
- 1:28Speaker 4: three phases very, very soundly.
- 1:30Speaker 3: We saw that in the Michigan game.
- 1:31Speaker 4: If you can come up with a special teams touchdown,
- 1:33Speaker 4: a defensive touchdown off of an interception or a fumble,
- 1:36Speaker 4: Iowa is going to rely on something like that. Play
- 1:39Speaker 4: the field position game, time of possession, all that sort
- 1:42Speaker 4: of stuff. Just classic Iowa leather helmet football. The one
- 1:46Speaker 4: thing Ohio State has been susceptible to this year has
- 1:49Speaker 4: been running the football. So is Iowa consistent, at least
- 1:52Speaker 4: in that attack early on to see if there's some
- 1:54Speaker 4: room to negotiate?
- 1:55Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 1:56Speaker 4: I think Ohio State is slowly figuring things out defensively
- 1:59Speaker 4: to the point that.
- 2:00Speaker 3: They should be able to bottle up Iowa.
- 2:02Speaker 4: But again, playing on the road in that environment, it
- 2:05Speaker 4: should be a great environment in Iowa City. I think
- 2:08Speaker 4: Ohio State should have success against Iowa's running game. On
- 2:11Speaker 4: the flip side, What's the answer for Julian saying to
- 2:15Speaker 4: Jeremiah Smith?
- 2:16Speaker 3: I don't know. I really don't know.
- 2:19Speaker 4: Nobody really knows the answer to that at this point,
- 2:21Speaker 4: considering the offense is designed now to force feed big
- 2:24Speaker 4: number four, and he's breaking records for Ohio state and
- 2:27Speaker 4: within the NCAA football records every single week. I don't
- 2:31Speaker 4: see a way that I was defense has the guys
- 2:34Speaker 4: that can match up with him one-on-one and slow him
- 2:37Speaker 4: down enough to the point that Iowa can gain some
- 2:41Speaker 4: advantage here and there. I, I don't know where it is.
- 2:44Speaker 4: I think Ohio State is probably going to be able
- 2:46Speaker 4: to run the football, not at will, but enough to
- 2:49Speaker 4: give this a little bit of leeway for Julian Sane
- 2:52Speaker 4: to the point that he's in second and third and
- 2:54Speaker 4: manageable and just creates more options for this offense under
- 2:57Speaker 4: Arthur Smith. Yeah, it's not the same defensive line. It's
- 3:00Speaker 4: not the same pass rush that you've seen. It's not
- 3:02Speaker 4: the same talent in the secondary. You just know that
- 3:05Speaker 4: you're going to get a very disciplined defense out of Iowa.
- 3:09Speaker 4: Iowa's going to have to come up with some creative
- 3:11Speaker 4: ways to make Julian saying uncomfortable. And that's the one
- 3:14Speaker 4: thing we've learned about Julian saying during his time at
- 3:16Speaker 4: Ohio state as a starter is that, yeah, if you
- 3:18Speaker 4: can get him off his, his spot and you can
- 3:22Speaker 4: make him move around in the pocket and have to react,
- 3:25Speaker 4: that's your best chance. But this is not a defense
- 3:28Speaker 4: where they can send three or four, even five and
- 3:30Speaker 4: really feel like they can alter what the quarterback is doing.
- 3:33Speaker 4: So that's going to be on Parker to come up
- 3:35Speaker 4: with some things that make saying uncomfortable, but, I just
- 3:38Speaker 4: don't know where the points come from for Iowa against
- 3:41Speaker 4: Ohio State. The way that Ohio State is playing, the
- 3:44Speaker 4: way Jeremiah Smith is playing, my personal favorite to.
- 3:46Speaker 3: Win the Heisman this year.
- 3:48Speaker 4: I don't know about you guys, but I just don't
- 3:50Speaker 4: think Iowa has enough firepower to keep up with the Buckeyes.
- 3:53Speaker 1: I'll get right back to this clip from the Power
- 3:55Speaker 1: 2 on College Football Addiction. But first, I want to
- 3:58Speaker 1: tell you, we picked everything that you see right now.
- 4:01Speaker 1: I'll tell you, we all took the more on Jaden
- 4:03Speaker 1: Ball's touchdowns. We all took the more on Jeremiah Smith's touchdowns.
- 4:06Speaker 1: We all took the more on Jeremiah Smith and Jaden
- 4:08Speaker 1: Ball's rushing slash receiving totals that they have there.
- 4:11Speaker 2: We took the more on Malachi Toney.
- 4:13Speaker 1: I took the less on Ryan Coleman Williams. So go
- 4:16Speaker 1: check out the show. You can hear what our live
- 4:19Speaker 1: predictions were. You can hear our thought process behind all
- 4:21Speaker 1: of them. And then go get on the Price Picks app.
- 4:24Speaker 1: Use our code HMA. Play $ 5. Get $ 150 in lineups
- 4:28Speaker 1: instantly when you win. If you place a $ 5 lineup
- 4:32Speaker 1: and win using that code HMA only. Make sure that
- 4:35Speaker 1: you are on the PrizePix app.
- 4:36Speaker 2: All right, now back to the clip. Cole, go ahead.
- 4:43Speaker 5: It's so interesting because of Phil Parker defenses are known
- 4:45Speaker 5: for being able to get after quarterbacks and play sound
- 4:48Speaker 5: secondary play. And so far, I mean, there's still a
- 4:50Speaker 5: top 15 pass defense in college football, and they're only
- 4:54Speaker 5: allowing like it's 150 yards.
- 4:55Speaker 3: Per game through the year.
- 4:57Speaker 5: But then last week, they allow over 100-plus yards to
- 5:01Speaker 5: not just one receiver, but two receivers in that Michigan game. And, like,
- 5:05Speaker 5: you can go ahead and say, well, it was a
- 5:06Speaker 5: 20-19 finish. It was, but you still give up over
- 5:09Speaker 5: 400 yards of offense. Like, the score kind of makes
- 5:11Speaker 5: sense for what is supposed to be Iowa football. The
- 5:14Speaker 5: yardages aren't. And then the other thing is, like, I
- 5:17Speaker 5: love Phil Parker because if he develops defensive linemen that
- 5:20Speaker 5: just play— sound football they have nine sacks right now
- 5:23Speaker 5: so the inability to get to the quarterback i think
- 5:25Speaker 5: has been a major problem that has allowed guys like
- 5:28Speaker 5: even bryce underwood a week ago be able to find
- 5:31Speaker 5: a rhythm in the passing attack be able to connect
- 5:32Speaker 5: downfield and be fair jg mckinnon and andrew marsh are
- 5:36Speaker 5: good players they are very very very solid wide receivers
- 5:39Speaker 5: in the big 10 they're not jeremiah smith like jeremiah
- 5:43Speaker 5: smith just just just for anybody's recollection jeremiah smith made
- 5:48Speaker 5: illinois part ways with their defensive coordinator last week After
- 5:52Speaker 5: four games. They said quite literally, this is so bad
- 5:57Speaker 5: that you can never, and it's Bobby Hawk. He's like,
- 5:59Speaker 5: he's a respected coach from Montana. Like he was the
- 6:01Speaker 5: Montana Grizzlies coach for years. And it was like, thanks,
- 6:04Speaker 5: but no, thanks for done. Like, like it was at
- 6:06Speaker 5: that level. So do you have an answer for that
- 6:08Speaker 5: in the secondary? Do you have an answer to be
- 6:09Speaker 5: able to make an offense like Ohio state one dimensional?
- 6:13Speaker 5: How do you put pressure on Julian saying to throw
- 6:15Speaker 5: out a guys that aren't Jeremiah Smith? And is your
- 6:17Speaker 5: secondary good enough? If you take away Jeremiah Smith to
- 6:19Speaker 5: stop a Devin McEwen, stop a Chris Henry, stop what
- 6:22Speaker 5: you have.
- 6:23Speaker 2: With Brandon Innes.
- 6:24Speaker 5: And on the flip side, the offense has found a rhythm,
- 6:27Speaker 5: I think, with getting the ball to Tony Diaz as
- 6:30Speaker 5: much as possible. I thought that Vander Zee came up
- 6:31Speaker 5: with a big catch, you know, to kind of get
- 6:33Speaker 5: the karma win for everybody else in college football over Michigan.
- 6:37Speaker 5: But Hank Brown is definitely going to be going up
- 6:40Speaker 5: against arguably the best secondary he has seen up to
- 6:42Speaker 5: this point this season. And if you don't have a
- 6:44Speaker 5: run game, which wasn't there and it was non-existent in
- 6:47Speaker 5: the Michigan game, but it was also non-existent in the
- 6:49Speaker 5: matchup against Iowa State. And again, the Cy-Hawk Bowl is
- 6:53Speaker 5: also known as like, what is it? The Cy-Ass Bowl?
- 6:55Speaker 2: I forgot what it is.
- 6:57Speaker 5: It's like, it's something ass. I know that.
- 6:59Speaker 3: It's Iowa's answer to the Red River shootout and that
- 7:01Speaker 3: it's bizarro world. I'll say that.
- 7:03Speaker 2: Yeah, truly.
- 7:04Speaker 3: It really is.
- 7:04Speaker 5: It always comes down to the wire. But it's like,
- 7:06Speaker 5: if you can't run the football against Iowa State, who,
- 7:08Speaker 5: credit where credit's due, Iowa State's been a lot better
- 7:10Speaker 5: than I think that we've given for Jimmy Rodgers in
- 7:12Speaker 5: year one. But you can't run it against Michigan. You're
- 7:15Speaker 5: really going to figure it out against Ohio State? It
- 7:18Speaker 5: just feels like as much as the good that is
- 7:21Speaker 5: coming here, the fact that you got a win, you're 4-0,
- 7:23Speaker 5: you have college game day coming to Iowa City for
- 7:26Speaker 5: the first time in two decades. Kinnick Stadium is a
- 7:29Speaker 5: wonderful atmosphere. There still are so many things that go
- 7:32Speaker 5: against you in this game just because it's who you
- 7:35Speaker 5: are as a program, where you are right now as
- 7:37Speaker 5: a program. And I'll tell you what, you want to
- 7:40Speaker 5: know what would make me feel a lot better about
- 7:41Speaker 5: this game? If it was a night kick. And it's
- 7:44Speaker 5: not a night kick. It's a midday kick. So it's like,
- 7:46Speaker 5: even you throw that in the mix, it's a thing
- 7:48Speaker 5: to where Ohio State can play a B-minus game and
- 7:52Speaker 5: still cover the spread. You need a team like Iowa
- 7:54Speaker 5: to play an A-plus game to be able to make
- 7:56Speaker 5: this a four-quarter battle.
- 7:58Speaker 1: Playing an A-plus game against Ohio State, always a tough
- 8:02Speaker 1: challenge to ask for. Hey, here's an underrated part of this.
- 8:05Speaker 1: I had Zach Smith on wide receivers coach at Ohio State.
- 8:08Speaker 1: He was also at Florida when they won under Urban.
- 8:11Speaker 1: He talked about the wave. the wave to the hospital.
- 8:15Speaker 1: He said, it's, it's obviously a great thing. Like I'm,
- 8:17Speaker 1: you know, I'm not complaining about it. He wasn't complaining
- 8:19Speaker 1: about it. It's really cool that they do that. He
- 8:21Speaker 1: said the emotion, and I don't think this impacts the
- 8:23Speaker 1: game because I just think Ohio state's that much better,
- 8:25Speaker 1: but he said the emotional impact of being on the
- 8:28Speaker 1: sideline when that happens is something that.
- 8:31Speaker 2: They try to prepare their kids for all.
- 8:33Speaker 1: Week because you, and that's why I'm bringing it up here.
- 8:37Speaker 1: We get so wrapped up about, I put a video
- 8:39Speaker 1: out a few minutes ago, a little bit ago on,
- 8:41Speaker 1: Florida being under ranked in the AP poll, right? We
- 8:44Speaker 1: get so caught up in these stupid, you know, Iowa
- 8:47Speaker 1: versus Ohio state, Auburn versus Tennessee, all these things. And
- 8:50Speaker 1: then you wave at that hospital and he said, we're
- 8:53Speaker 1: on the sideline and we're beating them. And it's just
- 8:56Speaker 1: the most emotionally draining thing because you realize like, Hey,
- 8:59Speaker 1: this thing we spent 200 hours this.
- 9:00Speaker 2: Week, which there aren't even 200 hours in a week,
- 9:02Speaker 2: but this.
- 9:03Speaker 1: Thing we spent 200 hours this week preparing for is
- 9:06Speaker 1: literally meaningless. And, um, it's a, it's a cool moment,
- 9:10Speaker 1: but he's like, man, it, you know, I'm not comparing
- 9:13Speaker 1: my plight to theirs, but like, it's hard.
- 9:16Speaker 2: It's hard to go out and play football after that.
- 9:18Speaker 2: And so I do want to, we don't do a
- 9:20Speaker 2: ton of Iowa on here.
- 9:22Speaker 1: It is a really cool moment that they have, but
- 9:25Speaker 1: you know, who knows, maybe if I was kind of
- 9:27Speaker 1: in it, maybe something emotional could, could trigger with Ohio state.
- 9:30Speaker 2: I don't know if it impacts the game, probably not,
- 9:32Speaker 2: but a.
- 9:32Speaker 1: Cool moment that I've never really thought about it from
- 9:34Speaker 1: that perspective. That's not game analysis or a breakdown at all,
- 9:37Speaker 1: but it's a cool thing that they do.
- 9:38Speaker 2: It's a college football story kind of tradition.
- 9:40Speaker 1: And so, But I've never thought about it from that
- 9:42Speaker 1: perspective of like, yeah, it takes some wind out of
- 9:45Speaker 1: your sails because you realize how meaningless what you're doing
- 9:48Speaker 1: actually is.
- 9:49Speaker 2: So anyway.
- 9:50Speaker 4: No, human emotion is a very real thing. Kinnick is
- 9:53Speaker 4: very special. Iowa City is special. I know my good
- 9:56Speaker 4: friend Biggie is listening at tour. I apologize for the break.
- 10:00Speaker 3: Of Iowa.
- 10:00Speaker 4: I hope that they do better in this game. Their
- 10:02Speaker 4: path to victory is going to be special team success.
- 10:05Speaker 4: turnovers and they're going to have to get points off
- 10:07Speaker 4: of those turnovers offensively or the defense is going to
- 10:09Speaker 4: have to do it for them. And you're probably going
- 10:12Speaker 4: to have to hope for Julian Sane to have his
- 10:14Speaker 4: worst day as a quarterback in the Big Ten.
- 10:17Speaker 3: So I don't necessarily see the path.
- 10:20Speaker 4: Unfortunately, I think this is going to be Ohio State
- 10:24Speaker 4: 38-17 Iowa.
- 10:28Speaker 2: Yeah, I like your score. Maybe a little lower for me.
- 10:30Speaker 3: Give me 31-13.
- 10:31Speaker 1: Kind of right in that same line, but I think they,
- 10:36Speaker 1: I think they win. I think I'd take them to
- 10:37Speaker 1: cover the 13 and a half 14 that it is
- 10:40Speaker 1: right now. I'd love to be wrong on that because
- 10:41Speaker 1: it is a ranked matchup. There's a lot of excitement
- 10:43Speaker 1: around it because it's a ranked matchup. I'd like to
- 10:46Speaker 1: see Ohio state sweat a little bit in the big 10,
- 10:48Speaker 1: which it doesn't look like anybody's going to make them
- 10:50Speaker 1: this year, but we will see how the season progresses.
- 10:53Speaker 2: Um, but I'm hoping to be wrong here. I think
- 10:56Speaker 2: Ohio state rolls.
- 10:57Speaker 1: Cool.
- 10:58Speaker 5: Um, I think that the, I'm glad you brought it up.
- 11:01Speaker 5: I think the best tradition in college football actually is
- 11:02Speaker 5: the way of a Kinnick stadium. I really do think it's, it's,
- 11:05Speaker 5: it's second.
- 11:05Speaker 2: It's just more meaningful than anything else. It's like Tom
- 11:08Speaker 2: Petty and the swaps. Cool.
- 11:09Speaker 1: Obviously I love the stuff that they do at Doke
- 11:12Speaker 1: running through the smoke at my, there's a lot of
- 11:13Speaker 1: cool stuff.
- 11:14Speaker 2: Nothing is that meaningful.
- 11:15Speaker 5: No, I think that we also have to give credit
- 11:17Speaker 5: where credit's due. Iowa, I think was the best eight
- 11:20Speaker 5: and 14 we have seen in college football last season
- 11:22Speaker 5: in the last probably 10 years. They played Oregon, Indiana,
- 11:27Speaker 5: Iowa State, USC, and they lost by a combined 15 points.
- 11:30Speaker 5: They also outscored Nebraska, Wisconsin, Michigan State by 64 points.
- 11:35Speaker 5: Mark Rogers of the Voice College Football was the one
- 11:37Speaker 5: to send this on up, so I want to give
- 11:38Speaker 5: him credit where credit's due. They also beat a top-tier
- 11:42Speaker 5: Vanderbilt team that had Diego Pavia playing in that game.
- 11:44Speaker 5: So they're a physically sound team. It's just that I
- 11:47Speaker 5: don't think that team is currently on the sidelines. So
- 11:49Speaker 5: as much as I think that if you can win
- 11:51Speaker 5: this game, it will end up being a massive victory,
- 11:53Speaker 5: and I will not doubt Iowa the rest of the year.
- 11:55Speaker 5: I just don't see it happening. I think it's a
- 11:57Speaker 5: double-digit win. I think it's a 14-point win. I'm going
- 11:59Speaker 5: to take Ohio State. Give me something like 35-20. 35-17.
