- 0:45From Municipal Stadium in Cleveland, Gillette presents the fourth game of the World Series between the New York Giants and Cleveland Indians.
- 0:59Good afternoon baseball fans, this is Al Helfer speaking for the Gillette Safety Racer Company.
- 1:04Gillette is on the air the year round with America's leading sports events for your entertainment.
- 1:09These include the Friday night boxing matches and such classics as the Rose Bowl game and Kentucky Derby.
- 1:14It's our way of thanking you folks who used Gillette products for your patronage.
- 1:20Now we switch to the clubhouse for Frankie Frisch, the Fordham Flashers standing by with Bobby Avila and Hank Thompson to discuss highlights of yesterday's game and perhaps a few guests or two about today.
- 1:30Come in Frankie Frisch.
- 1:31Come in Frankie Frisch.
- 1:34Good afternoon fans.
- 1:36Well, our guest this afternoon is Henry Thompson, and folks I'd like to brag about this fellow a little bit before I ask him a question.
- 1:44Henry you don't mind, I want to talk a little bit about you.
- 1:46Here's a fellow we haven't heard too much about, but he's been doing a tremendous job, an outstanding job.
- 1:51He's got two of his routers here, Paul LaPorte and Arthur Suskin.
- 1:56They are really two great routers of yours.
- 1:59But here's a fellow who has done a tremendous job defensively, and he's been hitting the ball in the clutch, and the outstanding thing is the base running job he did the day before yesterday.
- 2:11Remember Henry when you were on first base?
- 2:13Yeah.
- 2:14And Dusty Rhodes hit the ball to left center field with a little blooper?
- 2:17Yes.
- 2:18That play was right in front of you, wasn't it?
- 2:20Yes, I could see that Larry couldn't have caught them all.
- 2:22You could see and you kept right on going?
- 2:24Yes.
- 2:25And piece of base running had a great deal to do with the guys winning that ball game.
- 2:29You went to third and Dusty Rhodes followed you right to second, right?
- 2:31That's right.
- 2:32Henry, how's this thing going to come out now?
- 2:34Well Frank, I hope we can win today and get on back to New York City.
- 2:38What about that Cleveland pitching? You've been hitting them pretty good, haven't you?
- 2:41I didn't hit them too good. They got good pitching.
- 2:43I know they got good pitching, but you are leading the club in scoring, aren't you?
- 2:48Well I don't know how I haven't looked up.
- 2:49Well I know you're not looking up the records, but I know you are.
- 2:52Henry, where did you start playing ball?
- 2:54Well I started down in Dallas, Frank. I used to work at the ballpark there and kept playing around and jagging balls and so on and so forth.
- 3:02Did you work around the ballpark in a parking lot or anything?
- 3:05No, I hit the ballpark.
- 3:06Oh, at the ballpark.
- 3:07I got a good friend of mine named John Hopps there. I hope he's looking at it.
- 3:10All right, Henry. And now look, I got this, how much do you weigh?
- 3:17170 right now.
- 3:18170, how tall?
- 3:205'8".
- 3:215'8". Little guys can play ball too. How well I can recall being back in the St. Louis Cardinals.
- 3:26Bill Shaddell, air-jagged pitchers, slow ball, change of pace.
- 3:30Arthur Neff, another great World Series pitcher.
- 3:33Arthur's living in Phoenix now, a terrific guy.
- 3:36And Harvey Haddix, Bobby Shands, and a number of other guys.
- 3:40And also Dick Ridon. And they've done a fine job.
- 3:44Henry, what are you going to do after the season's over?
- 3:46What are you going to do with your World Series money?
- 3:48Well, my wife, she got that all planned up. She'll take care of that, frankly.
- 3:52I mean, you're going to get a little bit of it, aren't you?
- 3:54Every now and then I will.
- 3:56Henry, it's well to have you on our program.
- 3:58But first, I'd like to present you with this new Gillette one-piece razor set and the 1954 World Series record book.
- 4:05And fans, look for this Gillette display at your favorite store.
- 4:09And Henry, will you take that, please?
- 4:12But this Gillette World Series record book is a dandy.
- 4:16You're going to find this big little book filled with baseball facts with diagrams of all the major league ballparks.
- 4:23And it's got 112 pages of real dope on World Series history.
- 4:29But there's a picture in here, and it's a picture of the 1953 Yankees, the World Series Yankees.
- 4:36It's a terrific picture.
- 4:38And Henry, nice to see you.
- 4:41Thank you very much.
- 4:41And have a good winter, boy, and keep bearing down.
- 4:43Thank you very much.
- 4:43Goodbye, everybody. See you later.
- 4:44Now, fans, we have another treat here.
- 4:47We have a fellow that's done a tremendous job all year long at second base for the Cleveland Indians.
- 4:56Bobby Avila. Do I pronounce that right?
- 4:58Yeah, this is right from the system with my name, Frankie.
- 5:00Let me have that again, please. Bobby?
- 5:02Bobby Avila.
- 5:03Avila. Avila.
- 5:05Well, I got it down then, didn't I?
- 5:07Yeah, you're right.
- 5:08Bob, what do you think you fellas are going to do today?
- 5:10Well, I'm going to try to win today and then take the next three games.
- 5:14You're going to win today and then take the next three?
- 5:16That's right.
- 5:17Who's going to pitch for you today?
- 5:18Lemon.
- 5:18Lemon is a good pitcher.
- 5:20Your pitching hasn't been too bad outside of yesterday. It was a little shaky.
- 5:24Well, I think the pitching's been wonderful. Yes, we don't score any runs for them.
- 5:28Pitching seems to dominate in all World Series.
- 5:31What do you think about the giant pitchers?
- 5:33Well, they didn't pitch a good ball.
- 5:34They think we don't score too many runs for them.
- 5:36I don't know if it is the pitching or maybe it is us. We've hit nothing.
- 5:39Well, you haven't. There's no secret about that, Bob.
- 5:41You fellas haven't been hitting in the clutch, isn't that right?
- 5:44That's right.
- 5:44And I think the Giants, I don't mean to say this because some people might say that your flash likes to see a good ball game.
- 5:50You know, I'm not crazy about who's going to win this thing, but I'd like to see a good, real hot ball game.
- 5:56Like all three have been good ball games.
- 5:58Pretty good.
- 5:59But the Giants have been running those bases pretty good, Bob.
- 6:03Well, the reason is because they're getting on base. We don't get on base.
- 6:06Now we're on the base.
- 6:09You've had some men on bases, but you haven't been getting that key hit.
- 6:13You haven't been really getting the hit that means something.
- 6:16That's right. We don't hit in the clutch so far in this series.
- 6:18How about the umpiring in this series?
- 6:20Well, I'd say they've been pretty good playing.
- 6:22And you know, can't tell because in three or four games, anybody can make a mistake and call a bad ball like anybody.
- 6:27They are human beings.
- 6:28That's right. And I think the umpiring has been outstanding in this series.
- 6:30I think they've been doing a fine job.
- 6:32Tell me something about a fellow that used to play for me that I thought was a grand guy and still is a great guy to me.
- 6:38Your manager, Al Lopez.
- 6:39Well, he's a really nice fellow and I'd say he's one of the best managers in the business right now.
- 6:43You like to play for Al, huh?
- 6:45Yeah, I wish I could play for a long time for him.
- 6:47Well, you will. How old are you now?
- 6:4828, Frank.
- 6:4928? You'll be playing until you're old second baseman. They just keep going.
- 6:54I wish I could play for a minute. You'll play, Frank.
- 6:56Wait a minute. You'll play. You'll play. The old flash is a second soccer.
- 7:00It's an interesting place to play, isn't it?
- 7:02I love to play second base.
- 7:03Yes, and stay at that second. Of course, when you get a little older, you can always shift over to the old man's home, you know, third base.
- 7:09Third base.
- 7:10That's not a bad spot. All you got to do over third base, you know, look in the glove, it might be there. That's not a bad place.
- 7:15But that Thompson has been playing a great ball, hasn't he?
- 7:18Well, certainly he's been catching a few balls that he put in hard to third base.
- 7:21He took a few off you, didn't he?
- 7:22That's right.
- 7:23Say, Bobby Avila. Here's a Gillette. Oh, now you're going to enjoy that. I know you will. And the record book is a dandy.
- 7:29And it's a, of course, you know, it's a one-piece razor. And a 1950 World Series record book goes with it.
- 7:36Fans, you can get your copy at your favorite store.
- 7:39Bob Avila, lots of luck to you, young man. And I hope you have many years in Big League Ball.
- 7:44Thank you, Frank.
- 7:45That's all we have time for now, folks. If this proves to be the final game, I'll be on the air after it's over with some of the stars of the winning team.
- 7:53Otherwise, we'll be back tomorrow with more pregame interviews.
- 7:57And now we switch to the Gillette broadcasting booth.
- 8:02And here at Cleveland, everybody, the weatherman has been specifically kind because we have a blue, cloudless sky overhead, very little breeze blowing, and bright sunshine.
- 8:12And the broadcast this afternoon is authorized under broadcasting rights granted by the Commissioner of Baseball solely for the entertainment of our listening audience.
- 8:18And any publication, rebroadcast, or other use of the descriptions and accounts of this game without the express consent of the Commissioner is prohibited.
- 8:25And the broadcasting of today's game, the fourth of the 1954 World Series, marks not only the 16th year in which these games have been aired over this network,
- 8:34but today the mutual broadcasting system is proud to be presenting itself on its 20th birthday.
- 8:40So it's sort of a joyous occasion, and we expect the same here at Cleveland.
- 8:45The starting lineup for this afternoon's ball game, the fourth in the series, three of them have been won by the New York Giants.
- 8:50And for the visiting New York Giants, Widy Loughlin will lead off at first base.
- 8:54Hitting second will be Alvin Dark at shortstop.
- 8:56The right fielder is Don Mueller.
- 8:58Hitting number four is the center fielder, Willie Mays.
- 9:01Hank Thompson will be the third baseman batting in the number five position.
- 9:04Hitting sixth is Marty Ervin in left field.
- 9:06David Williams, the second baseman.
- 9:08And the catcher is Wes Westrom.
- 9:10The pitcher here this afternoon is Mount Carmel, Illinois' little left-hander, Don Little.
- 9:14And we'll give you the Cleveland lineup just as soon as all stand to attention for the playing and singing of our national anthem.
- 10:45Now the movie star Jeff Chandler has sung our national anthem for us.
- 10:48We can give you the starting lineup for the Cleveland Indians.
- 10:51Al Smith will be in left field leading off.
- 10:53Hitting number two is Bobby Avila at second base.
- 10:56Hitting the number three position will be Larry Doby in center field.
- 10:59Al Rosen returns to third base this afternoon.
- 11:02For the Indians, he'll bat in the number four position.
- 11:04Then comes Victor Wirtz at first base.
- 11:06Vic Wirtz at first base.
- 11:08In right field is Wally Westlake.
- 11:10Sam Dente gets the call at shortstop this afternoon for Al Lopez Tribe.
- 11:14Jim Higgins, the catcher, and the pitcher is Bob Lemon.
- 11:16Coming back after having lost the first ball game in a series, it is he called upon this afternoon to see what he can do about stopping the onrushing New York Giants.
- 11:24Lemon has pitched nine in the third innings in this year's World Series losing the ball game.
- 11:29He's a 23-game winner from Long Beach, California.
- 11:32The umpire and chief behind the plate this afternoon from the American League is Johnny Stevens.
- 11:36Al Bartek of the National League at first.
- 11:38Charlie Berry of the American League at second.
- 11:40Jocko Conlon of the National League at third.
- 11:42And it's going to be Nathanael Warnocky on the baselines.
- 11:45And now before we turn the microphone over to our very good friend Jimmy Dudley for the first portion of the ball game, let's pause here 10 seconds for station identification.
- 11:54This is VIRTUO, the radio network for all America.
- 11:58WGN, your exclusive World Series station in Chicago.
- 12:10And so this afternoon it's a battle between the veteran Bob Lemon, the 23-game winner this year for Cleveland, and little Don Little, the low-pitching left-hander for the New York Giants.
- 12:20He's known for his low-breaking stuff.
- 12:23Well, let's see how the two are going to fare here this afternoon.
- 12:25And stepping up to the microphone is Jimmy Dudley.
- 12:29And Jimmy, this I guess we'll have to say is the do or die game as far as the Cleveland Indians are concerned.
- 12:35You're absolutely right, Al, and thank you very much.
- 12:38And hello again baseball fans everywhere.
- 12:41Yes sir, as Al stated, this is a do or die day for the Cleveland Indians trailing three games to nothing.
- 12:47Al Lopez is sending his ace right-hander Bob Lemon to the mound.
- 12:50He started the first game of the World Series at the Polo Grounds.
- 12:54Just a couple of days ago.
- 12:56It seems like an awful long time ago, I'm quite sure, to a lot of Indian fans all over the world.
- 13:02But then this is baseball, and a lot can happen.
- 13:05Even when you're trailing three games to nothing, Whitey Lockman steps into the batter's box, batting 154 left-hand batter.
- 13:11The first pitch of the ballgame is a strike to the outside corner waist-tie.
- 13:16Strike one called, Whitey Lockman, number 25.
- 13:20Only 28 years old, he's still one of the veterans of the Giant team.
- 13:30Here's the windup.
- 13:32Lemon's next pitch is fouled back into the stand, up to the left.
- 13:36And the count is strike two.
- 13:38On to the count on the batter.
- 13:41Lemon turned in a fine performance in the first game of the World Series at the Polo Grounds on Wednesday afternoon.
- 13:47But as we all know, lost on a home run to Dusty Rhodes, who has been without a doubt the hitting star of the 54 World Series.
- 13:58Lemon checks his sign, works into the windup.
- 14:02The 0-2 pitch, Lockman takes ball one low into the dirt.
- 14:05Ball one and strike two.
- 14:07Whitey Lockman joined the New York Giants back in 1945.
- 14:12An 18-year-old ballplayer out of North Carolina.
- 14:18But he's found the Polo Grounds and the rest of the Major League parks to his liking.
- 14:24Ball one and strike two, the count on him.
- 14:27Whitey stands deep in the batter's box.
- 14:29Here's the pitch.
- 14:30Strike three called with a fastball to the inside corner.
- 14:32He's struck him out.
- 14:34And lemon starting off today's game with a strikeout.
- 14:41And of course, in baseball tradition and superstition, that is the good sign for the pitcher.
- 14:51The opposite of course is walking the first man.
- 14:53They say he'll always come home to roost on you.
- 14:55Here's Captain Alvin Dark, number 19, the Giants shortstop, batting 333 in the series.
- 15:01Take ball one outside, curveball breaking down and away.
- 15:05Dark has four hits in the series thus far for a 333 average.
- 15:11Lockman, the leadoff man, had two so far.
- 15:15One out and nobody on.
- 15:16Lemmon's next pitch.
- 15:17Dark swings and hits a high fly ball into short right center.
- 15:21Bobby Abila goes back but Wally Westlake is in, calls him off and makes the catch.
- 15:26Alvin Dark, fly to Wally Westlake, the right fielder, coming in fast.
- 15:30To a short right field position.
- 15:32You know there have been only four home runs in this series, two for each team.
- 15:38There was a World Series that didn't produce a single home run.
- 15:41Though it had as its hero the greatest circuit platter of them all, Babe Ruth.
- 15:45I find in the Gillette World Series record book that was back in 1918.
- 15:49And the Babe Pidston won two games for the Red Sox.
- 15:52And now up is Don Hewler.
- 15:54He swings on the first pitch, hits a fly ball out into that center, dropping in there for a base hit.
- 15:59Harry Dolby made a run for it but couldn't get to it.
- 16:04So there is the first hit of the ball game, that's Hewler's.
- 16:06That's a top fly single into that center.
- 16:12That's Hewler's fifth World Series hit for this year.
- 16:16And it brings up Willie Mays.
- 16:20There's not much more that you can say about this board that hasn't already been said or written.
- 16:27In the thousands of articles that have acclaimed him as one of baseball's most exciting ball players.
- 16:34Right hand batter, Mays had three hits in yesterday's game.
- 16:37Swings on the first pitch, pops it up, foul, down the first base line.
- 16:41Vic Wirtz moves into foul territory.
- 16:43He has it and the side is retired.
- 16:47Mays foul to Vic Wirtz.
- 16:50And for the Giants in the first inning, no runs, one hit, one man left.
- 16:55And going into the last half of the first inning, the score is New York nothing, Cleveland nothing.
- 17:02You know fans, to be right in all the thrills that make this series the biggest thing in sports,
- 17:07you need the new Gillette World Series record book.
- 17:10You don't have to be a red hot fan to get a big boot out of this handy reference book.
- 17:14It's indexed so you can put your finger right on what you want to know.
- 17:17It's pocket size and crammed full of scores of past series games.
- 17:22It names the record of every player, all the basic rules and scoring tips,
- 17:26modern record breaking performances, this year's player rosters,
- 17:30and a lot of baseball information you won't find in any other book.
- 17:34With it you get more fun out of the World Series and the Hot Stove League coming up this winter.
- 17:38And as far as that's concerned, next year's games too.
- 17:42Why don't you get this book?
- 17:44Remember it's free. It comes attached to the Gillette Super Speed Razor Set.
- 17:49You buy it for just one dollar.
- 17:51You better pick up a copy tonight though because that supply is going mighty fast.
- 18:02And now going into the last half of the first inning, the Indians coming to bat.
- 18:08And for the Indians this is the big play.
- 18:11I notice that Al Lopez is sending Mike Garcia early win his entire pitching staff to the both ends.
- 18:21We'll have them ready, ready for duty on a minute's notice.
- 18:27Leo DeRosha's in the spot to do the same thing.
- 18:30Stepping into the batter's box to lead off for the Indians is Al Smith, left fielder,
- 18:34batting 273 in the World Series thus far, has three hits.
- 18:39Fuzzy, his teammates call him, Fuzzy Tough.
- 18:42Little's first pitch to end this ball went inside and low.
- 18:46Little Don Little, the giant left-hander, noted for his pinpoint control.
- 18:52He's a curveball artist, one nine lost four during the regular season.
- 19:00Last half of the first, the next pitch is ball two, over but low.
- 19:05Umpire Stevens right on the ball, all the way down into the catcher's bow.
- 19:10This has been a series kept well in hand by the umpires.
- 19:23Little okays the sign. The two-and-nothing pitch is a strike of beauty right down the middle.
- 19:27The captain moves to ball two and strike one.
- 19:31American League umpire Johnny Stevens working back of the plate on the balls and strikes.
- 19:36Barlich at first base, Berry at second, Conlon at third.
- 19:41Knapp on the left field foul and Lahn-Wanakee on the right.
- 19:44The two-one pitch, ball three, high and outside, it's a fast ball, took off.
- 19:50Sailed out of the strike zone, the count is ball three and strike one.
- 20:01The fourth game of the 1954 World Series coming your way from Cleveland's big municipal stadium
- 20:07before better than 70,000 people.
- 20:10Here's the windup, the three-one pitch is a strike to the inside corner and the string is out.
- 20:18Full count of three and two.
- 20:22McCloud always sympathizes with the batter, of course, on that pitch when he starts toward first.
- 20:28But the yellow of the umpire, the strike two, calls him back.
- 20:33Full count.
- 20:35Little working carefully into the windup.
- 20:38The next pitch is swung on and a fireball is hit just back to second base.
- 20:42Into short center, second base from Davy Williams.
- 20:44Back under it, he has it, we're up number one. One away.
- 20:53That brings up number one, Bobby Avila, the Indian second baseman.
- 20:59Well, Willie Mays was hitless up until yesterday's game.
- 21:02He got three and his World Series average of 54 is now 300.
- 21:08Bobby Avila, American League batting champion, has only two hits in the three games played thus far.
- 21:14Average of 182.
- 21:21Right-hand batter, a fellow from Veracruz, Mexico.
- 21:25One out, nobody on, he takes the strike.
- 21:29Race-tide pitch.
- 21:34In less than ten days from the time the World Series has concluded,
- 21:38Avila will be in Mexico City playing baseball, the Winter Leagues.
- 21:43The next pitch joined, he swings and he misses, strike two.
- 21:47And Little crossed him up.
- 21:49He was looking for that famous little curve, but he got a fastball.
- 21:54Up around the shoulders and went for it.
- 21:56The count is strike two.
- 22:00The giant outfield, Irvin, in left, Mays in center.
- 22:04Mueller in right.
- 22:06They're shaded toward left for this right-hand batter.
- 22:11Oh, and to the count. Here's the windup.
- 22:13The next pitch is ball one high and inside. One and two count.
- 22:18Now, umpire Stevens wants to take a look at that ball.
- 22:27Avila won the American League Batting Championship with an average of 3.41.
- 22:31He packs a lot of power. Also hit 15 home runs during the regular season.
- 22:39Ball one, strike two, the count.
- 22:41One out and nobody on, no score in the last half of the first inning.
- 22:46Here's the windup.
- 22:47The next pitch is ball one and a line drive is hit to the second baseman, Davy Williams, for out number two.
- 22:53That brings up number 14, Larry Delby, the Indian center fielder.
- 23:09Delby has only two hits in the World Series.
- 23:13First three games. His batting average is 167.
- 23:20Two out and nobody on, left-hand batter.
- 23:23First pitch is ball one high and inside a fastball.
- 23:27Delby hit the dirt. Get out of the way of it.
- 23:32Little is not noted for his speed. Depends on his curveball, honestly.
- 23:37And excellent control.
- 23:39Two out and nobody on in the last half of the first inning.
- 23:41The next pitch, ball two inside. Ball two, no strikes.
- 23:51After watching Johnny Antonelli work the other day, especially pitching to Delby and Wirtz,
- 23:58we have a suspicion that Leo DeRoscia has told Little,
- 24:01stay away from the curveball when you pitch to these two boys.
- 24:07Wirtz and Delby, two left-hand batters.
- 24:10The next pitch is a strike to the outside corner.
- 24:14Ball two and strike one.
- 24:16Coaching at third base for the Indians, number 44, Tony Cuccinello.
- 24:21At first base, the coach here is Red Crest, number 42.
- 24:25Two out for the Indians in the last half of the first inning.
- 24:28The count of the batter, ball two and strike one.
- 24:30Next pitch, he swings and he misses. Strike two.
- 24:38On deck is now Rosen, the Indians' third baseman, back in the lineup.
- 24:47A beautiful day for baseball here in Cleveland.
- 24:51Skies are clear.
- 24:54Two-and-two count. Here's the windup.
- 24:57The next pitch is swinging and he misses. He struck him out on a curveball.
- 25:00Delby goes down swinging.
- 25:03And there is the first strikeout for Little.
- 25:06That is the fourth time that Delby has struck out in the World Series.
- 25:10For the Indians, no runs, no hits, nothing across.
- 25:15And at the end of the first inning, the score, New York Giants, nothing.
- 25:19The Cleveland Indians, nothing.
- 25:26You know, the New York Giants won the National League flag,
- 25:29but Walt Alston, the freshman manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers,
- 25:32certainly gave the Giants a battle for first place.
- 25:37And you should see Walt's beard. It's a mean one.
- 25:40But he says shaving isn't hard at all, and it's always refreshing with the one-piece Gillette razor.
- 25:46Walt Alston is mighty particular about the way he looks.
- 25:49Like everyone else, he wants quick, comfortable shaves.
- 25:53Why don't you try this convenient, easy shaving razor?
- 25:56It'll give you a slick-looking shave that'll last and last.
- 26:09Well, the first inning completed.
- 26:12No score for either team. One hit.
- 26:14That's far. That by Don Mueller.
- 26:18Coming up in the first half of the second inning for the Giants is number 16, Hank Thompson.
- 26:25He's batting 333 in the series with three hits.
- 26:30Mr. Henry, as the ballplayers themselves call him.
- 26:37He was the fellow that worked in 43 double plays back in 1950,
- 26:44equaling a record set by the famous Pytraner.
- 26:50That record had stood for some 25 years.
- 26:55Henry Thompson, left-hand batter.
- 26:58Lemon, into the windup. The first pitch, his ball went outside and low.
- 27:07And talking with many of the Indians this morning,
- 27:10they are disappointed that they are showing thus far against the Giants,
- 27:13but still in there to give it a battle all the way.
- 27:16Lemon pitches ball two inside with a curveball.
- 27:19Ball two and no strikes.
- 27:26The outfield pulled around toward right.
- 27:28Westlake deepened straight away back to the edge of the track.
- 27:31They'll be well over in right center.
- 27:33Nothing to nothing ball game.
- 27:35The two-and-nothing pitch. Thompson takes ball three outside and low.
- 27:43Coaching down at first base, number six.
- 27:46That's Freddie Fitzsimmons.
- 27:49At third base, Herman Frank.
- 27:53The two-one pitch to Thompson is ball four of the three-one pitch. Excuse me.
- 28:00Ball four. Thompson takes a walk.
- 28:07And Thompson now has five bases on balls in the Wales series.
- 28:21The next batter, number 20, Marty Irvin.
- 28:23Right-hand batter, left fielder, still looking for his first hit in the series.
- 28:27He takes a strike, a fastball right in there.
- 28:37Runner on first, Hank Thompson with nobody out.
- 28:41The walk to Thompson, the first of the game.
- 28:43Here's the stretch.
- 28:44The pitch is ball one outside and low, a curveball that almost got away from catcher Jim Hegan.
- 28:56Here's Irvin, one of baseball's real, steady ball players, day in and day out.
- 29:01He gives you that same fine performance.
- 29:05An all-star athlete from New Jersey, Orange High School.
- 29:10The one-and-one pitch is one of the best.
- 29:11There's a line drive, a vicious hit into left center, going for extra bases.
- 29:15Here's Thompson racing around second.
- 29:16He's coming to third.
- 29:17And Irvin goes for two.
- 29:19He's in there with a double.
- 29:20The Giants have runners on second and third with nobody out.
- 29:28Marty Irvin coming through with his first base hit of the season, the series.
- 29:33You always want to say season when you're thinking about the series.
- 29:38So that base on balls to Thompson, has Lemon in trouble, has Irvin followed with a double.
- 29:44Runners on second and third with nobody out in the batter is Davey Williams.
- 29:49The infield now closes in.
- 29:52They'll try to cut this run off of the plate.
- 29:55Williams is hitless in the series, right-hand batter.
- 29:58Swings on the first pitch, a line drive has hit the Wurz.
- 30:00Wurz goes to Davey and the throw goes over left field.
- 30:04Davey did not get back to second and Thompson comes on to score.
- 30:07Irvin moves to third.
- 30:12There's an error, charge to Vic Wurz.
- 30:16That was a rough break for Bob Lemon.
- 30:19Williams lined to Wurz.
- 30:21Indy could not get back to second in time to cover on Irvin.
- 30:26Wurz attempted to throw anyway and threw badly into left field.
- 30:31So Thompson scores and the Giants lead one to nothing.
- 30:40One out, the batter is Wes Westrom.
- 30:42The infield is still in, one out.
- 30:44Westrom has three hits in the series for 300 average.
- 30:48Lemon works into the windup.
- 30:50First pitch is thrown and there's a fly ball out into right field.
- 30:54Westlake moves in, 100 now.
- 30:56The runner tags up, there's the catch.
- 30:57Westlake drops the ball and the runner comes on to score.
- 31:00And I believe Westrom is going to be called safe at first on an error.
- 31:14Now Lopez comes out of the Indian dugout.
- 31:18Hump by Charlie Burry, back to second base.
- 31:22Motion safe on the ball hit by Westrom.
- 31:26In other words, he is stating that Westlake did not have complete control of the ball.
- 31:36He got the ball in his glove all right, but in shifting from the glove's hand to the throwing hand,
- 31:40he let the ball drop to the ground.
- 31:42And that is an error on Wally Westlake, the right fielder.
- 31:45The Indians' second error in this inning.
- 31:48And the Giants lead by a score of two to nothing.
- 31:53Westrom is on first as a result of the error.
- 31:59Actually, it turns out to be a rough break on Westrom as far as getting credit for a run that at illness concerned.
- 32:06The error takes away the RBI, unless the official score could want to make a ruling in that particular case.
- 32:18An error takes away the RBI.
- 32:29We'll check with the official score now to see whether Westom is given a sacrifice five.
- 32:40Now the score is New York 2, Cleveland nothing.
- 32:43First half of the second inning, only one out.
- 32:45Westom is on first base.
- 32:50That is a ruling based on umpire's judgment.
- 32:52You must have complete control of a ball, even though you just catch it.
- 32:56It's like a swan-o'-can of corn in any ball game.
- 32:59In shifting from the glove's hand to the throwing hand, you must control it at all times and get that throw away.
- 33:07The batter is Don Little, the pitcher.
- 33:12He gets him on first, two runs are home.
- 33:18Now the outfield, moving around toward left.
- 33:21Two very costly errors have allowed two giant runs to score.
- 33:30Westom takes the lead off first.
- 33:33Little is the left-hander all the way.
- 33:35Left-hand batter cuts over the plate.
- 33:37First pitch to him, he tries to bunt and fouls it off to the left of the plate out of play.
- 33:42Strike one.
- 33:47Batter on deck is Whitey Loughlin.
- 33:52Strike one to count.
- 33:53Rosen, the third baseman for the Indians, moves in.
- 33:58Right near the infield grad in case of a bunt try.
- 34:05Here's the stretch.
- 34:06The next pitch is strike two, calls.
- 34:09Little had the bat out there for the bunt, but pulled it back.
- 34:12Takes strike two.
- 34:13Going to the count.
- 34:20Where's the cap?
- 34:21Very gently on his head.
- 34:23Reminds you a little bit of the Yankees' famous Whitey Ford.
- 34:28Strike two count.
- 34:29Westom ready to travel from first.
- 34:31One out.
- 34:32The pitch is ball one, high and inside.
- 34:34Ball one and strike two.
- 34:36The score is New York two, Cleveland nothing.
- 34:47Left batter to the infield and close.
- 34:49The next pitch is ball two, over but low, and the count is even, two and two.
- 34:56Little steps out now, looks down to his coach at third base, Herman Franks.
- 35:04Lemon juggles the ball in the glove.
- 35:10Worst is holding against the runner, Westom at first base.
- 35:16Two and two count.
- 35:18Fourth game of the 54 World Series.
- 35:20The Giants lead three to nothing in the series.
- 35:23The next pitch, ball three, outside.
- 35:26Full count of three and two on the batter.
- 35:28Had two strikes on him.
- 35:30Now Little has worked it to the full count.
- 35:37Let's watch Westom at first base.
- 35:40He may be moving, with caution, the count three and two in the pitcher up.
- 35:45One out.
- 35:46The next pitch is strike three call, right in there, and he's stuck him out.
- 35:50Little called it on strike.
- 35:52Westom holding at first base, very wisely so, against that very thing.
- 35:58That's the second strike out for Lemon, both on a call, third strike.
- 36:04That brings up number 25, Whitey Lockman.
- 36:09Lockman, a left-hand batter, will call that on strikes in the first inning.
- 36:13The Giants lead two to nothing.
- 36:16Lemon's first pitch to Lockman is ball one, outside and low.
- 36:20They're now playing straight away.
- 36:24Fine bleacher crowd today with the sun out, nice and warm,
- 36:29and a lot of folks in the area back of the fence, between the bleacher and the fence.
- 36:34Lemon checks the runner.
- 36:36The pitch is a strike three high to the outside corner.
- 36:40Ball one and strike one to count.
- 36:47That's Bob Lemon, the Indian base right-hander from Long Beach, California.
- 36:53Here's the catch.
- 36:55The pitch is inside and low, ball two, two and one to count.
- 36:59On deck is the other dangerous Alvin Dowd.
- 37:10Pepper in the Indian infield, Al Rosen, Sam Bendy,
- 37:13and the other starting in for the pitcher.
- 37:17A walk and a double. That Lemon and Trouble, two others, didn't help.
- 37:21The next pitch, ball three, over but low, and the count is three and one.
- 37:29Ball three, strike one.
- 37:36That's Weston, there's the runner at first.
- 37:39Now it's moved away from the bag.
- 37:41The three-one pitch, the runner's on the go, swinging a miss, a photo second.
- 37:45Bendy takes it and taps it on the runner, he's out.
- 37:49A hit and run was on, and Weston is out.
- 37:53A second base, he's in to Bendy, two-pitch.
- 37:58The Lachman will get another chance in the third inning.
- 38:03In the second, now for New York, markup two runs.
- 38:07A hit with one rock, two Indian errors, very costly, and nobody left.
- 38:13Going into the last half of the second inning, the score is New York two,
- 38:17proven nothing.
- 38:19Look shot, feel shot, be shot.
- 38:27We spend a lot of effort, sir, to make sure you're jealous.
- 38:33Align the blade exactly right, so fast with shape you'll get.
- 38:40It's mighty sturdy, made to last, but if you drop it, brother,
- 38:46and spoil the blade alignment, then it's time to get another.
- 38:52To look shot, every time you take two, feel shot.
- 38:57On the ball, we see the just be shot, in the whiskers, off with the mighty Gillette,
- 39:04two first feet.
- 39:08Buy one now, folks, and get with it.
- 39:10The handy vest pocket Gillette, well through his record books.
- 39:18We're heading into the last half of the second inning, a nice big hand for Al Rosen as he steps up.
- 39:24He's leading off for the Indians, right hand batter,
- 39:28was out of yesterday's game with that bad leg.
- 39:34Here's the windup, and the first pitch to him is a set call, inside corner, way side.
- 39:39Rosen has two hits in the series, the first two games he did not play in number three,
- 39:45batting average 250.
- 39:49The Giants lead in this game by a score of two to nothing.
- 39:52They lead in the World Series, three games for nothing,
- 39:55and a victory for them today would close the book on this year's classic.
- 40:00The Indians hope, of course, to prevent that.
- 40:06The next pitch, Rosen swings the ground ball over the pitchers head out of the second base,
- 40:09knocked down by Williams, there's a throw to first, and in time on a beautiful play.
- 40:13Rosen is out.
- 40:19Fine play by Baby Williams, who had Rosen take perfectly,
- 40:25the play in, over close court second, one out.
- 40:33That brings up the quarks, number 23, the Indian first baseman.
- 40:37There's a batting average of 500 for this season.
- 40:42In the series thus far, he has six hits, 500 batting average.
- 40:48Six out of 12.
- 40:56Big left hand batter, swings on the first pitch, and fouls it back into the upper deck out of play.
- 41:11Right one, the outfielders are pulled around toward right for work.
- 41:21The Giants coming up with two runs in the half of the second inning, the lead to the nothing.
- 41:28Little's next pitch, ball one high and inside, one and one to count.
- 41:35That foul off the bat of Vic Woods back into the upper deck here.
- 41:41Hank Greenberg, the general manager of the Indians, tried for it, up to charge him an error I guess.
- 41:47The one and one pitch to work, there's ball two inside with a curve that failed him, ball two and strike one.
- 42:03Right side of the infield playing deep back to the edge of the outfield grass is David Williams, the second baseman.
- 42:08Deep along the line at first is Wiley Lachman.
- 42:11The two one pitch is ball three, over but high.
- 42:14Tried to get him with a fastball.
- 42:18Three and one.
- 42:25John Little, wearing number 37.
- 42:33He's a pick-pick pitcher, a fellow you like to watch.
- 42:37Very smooth delivery, good follow through.
- 42:41Check back to his outfielders now, taking the position to count three and one.
- 42:46Works maybe gunning and he knows it.
- 42:48One out and nobody on, here's the windup.
- 42:50The pitch and work attempts to pull away from it, fouls it down the third baseline and the count is three and two.
- 42:56Ball was fielded by Tony Cucinello, going back into play.
- 43:00Works failed to get the bat back and he started his swing.
- 43:04Checked it, but still fouled it off.
- 43:09The Indians still looking for their first hit.
- 43:12Little has retired the first four men in a row, striking out Dobie for his first strike out of the game.
- 43:20In through the count, on deck is Wiley Lachlake.
- 43:23The payoff hit then works his, I believe the ball hit his bat, but it's rolled foul.
- 43:28Yep, it hit the handle of his bat.
- 43:30Umpire Stevens, very alert on that play.
- 43:35Very much alert.
- 43:37Now works his swing to the umpire, but the ball hit his fist.
- 43:45Umpire Stevens is probably not arguing against the fact that the ball hit him, what he is claiming.
- 43:51And from the crack of the ball on the bat, you have to say that Stevens made a great call on that.
- 44:01Now the ball hit the bat, and it's like the ball hit worse after you.
- 44:10It must hit you first.
- 44:17But there's the type of play that will give you some idea of how tough the job the men in blue have.
- 44:24They're on their toes, these umpires.
- 44:28Lopez came out to see if Wetz was all right, so they'd train a wally bat.
- 44:33Second position, went out, nobody on.
- 44:36The three-two pick, works his swing to miss the fireball out into short left field.
- 44:39Coming over fast with Monty Oven, he can't get it and drops on the line foul.
- 44:43Works outside the white shot ball.
- 44:50Umpire Larry Knapp, right out there on top of that play as the ball hits.
- 44:55Foul by Hitches, and Wetz now must again come back to the plate.
- 45:02Well, the fans are getting a big feel out of it, and that's baseball.
- 45:16In the last half of the second inning, the Giants lead by a score of two to nothing, one out.
- 45:21Wetz to bat it with a count three and two.
- 45:25An exciting time at bat, that's for sure.
- 45:30Now the fans calling for Wetz to come through.
- 45:36Little checks his sign into the windup.
- 45:38The big pitch, there's a line drive out into right center for a long base hit.
- 45:42Going all the way to the fence, Wetz makes the turn at first, he's going for two.
- 45:46The two outfielders run together. Wetz comes in the second with a standup double.
- 46:07And then the fans, there's one of the greatest examples of the basis of all baseball.
- 46:14A never-ending battle between Pitcher and Paddow.
- 46:19And Wetz won with a long double into right center.
- 46:25The stars, New York 2, three to nothing.
- 46:32That's the seventh series hit of this week.
- 46:38There's two doubles, one triple, and one home run.
- 46:41Among these seven hits, the second is one out in the batters, Wally Westlake.
- 46:46Westlake has one hit played in one game.
- 46:49Swings on the first pitch, it's a ground ball to the shortstop.
- 46:51Big hop taken by Darts, a throw to first and Westlake is out.
- 46:55Westlake rounding out, short to first, six to three.
- 47:04That brings up number 36, Sam Dente. The shortstop in today's ball game.
- 47:11First game in the series that Dente has started.
- 47:20He has been in two of the games, best ball.
- 47:24As a utility player, after second was lifted for a panchetta.
- 47:28It's a right-hand batter, has no average.
- 47:30Takes ball one low into the dirt, good stop by Westlake from the giant catcher.
- 47:35Block the ball with his check.
- 47:38Two out here in the last half of the second inning.
- 47:40The Giants lead by a score of two to nothing.
- 47:45Westlake is on second.
- 47:47He has the first Indian hit of the game.
- 47:51Outfield is a shallow.
- 47:53Little is ready, takes it back to the runner.
- 47:56The pitch to Dente, a trick to the outside corner, one and one to count.
- 48:01Right now it's past ten seconds for station identification.
- 48:05This is Mutuo, the radio network for all America.
- 48:09WGM, your exclusive World Series station, Chicago.
- 48:19Out set for the next pitch is strike two, foul, the curve ball breaking over at the knees.
- 48:25The count now is ball one and strike two.
- 48:30Umpire Stevens to take the heat off, dressing off home plate.
- 48:37Dente clapping home plate with the heavy end of the bat, flashes it around as he steps back in.
- 48:47Lads from New Jersey, fine utility ball player, good job, man.
- 48:53Runner on second. The next pitch is fouled into the stands, off to the right of the plate, and the count remains.
- 49:01Ball one and strike two.
- 49:03The two out.
- 49:06As the Indians come up with their first bit of excitement in the ball game, a runner on second.
- 49:11The two out. Dente the batter.
- 49:14The Giants showing two runs lead by that score two to nothing.
- 49:21On deck, hoping for a chance to come up, it's Jan Huygen.
- 49:27Little checks to the runner. The pitch is low into the dirt and gets away from Westrom.
- 49:31Rolls off to the left of the plate, which moves the third.
- 49:35Westrom recovers the ball and it's a wild pitch.
- 49:38Dodge to Don Little.
- 49:46The pitchers are really uncorking some wild throws in this game and in others of the 1954 World Series.
- 49:56Always get to thinking about records, but of course when you talk about records, just have your handy Gillette World Series record book with you, and you'll never be lost.
- 50:10Both lemon and wind come up with wild pitches.
- 50:15The runner's two and two. What's now is one goes closer to home.
- 50:18Two out. The two-two pitch.
- 50:21Dente swings and hits the far ball into right center.
- 50:24Willie Mays going back. I'm going to close it down and makes the catch.
- 50:29Dente slides to Mays in center.
- 50:33The fad is retired.
- 50:36Mays, evidently not realizing they were two out, turned and quickly threw into the infield.
- 50:42The Indians in the second. No runs, one hit. One man left.
- 50:47And at the end of two, the score is New York 2-0.
- 50:54The fourth game of the 1954 World Series, and Alton, the way things have started here in these first two innings, we could have a little bit of excitement.
- 51:03We certainly could, particularly with the New York Giants having the door open for them in the second inning by Peravere.
- 51:10After all, if it should be as tight from here on as it has been loose on the defense up until now, we could have a ball game that would cook along in the next inning this afternoon, couldn't we?
- 51:23You mean part of one of those wild scoring jabs, huh?
- 51:26That's right. I'm looking forward, aren't you?
- 51:28Well, there's nothing the fans like better than a wide-open ball game.
- 51:32And we certainly hope that you folks all around the world, the men at two, the men and women over three,
- 51:39as I'm drawing now play by play over mutual and the rest of the stations all over the world, bringing you to the count of the 1954 World Series.
- 51:48First from the Polo grounds in New York, now here at Municipal Stadium in Cleveland on the shores of Lake Erie.
- 51:58In two innings, the Giants had two runs, they've made two hits, no errors. The Indians have no runs, one hit, and they have made two errors.
- 52:10And now the first of the third, moving into the batter's box is number 25, Roddy Lockman.
- 52:16He was up when Westrom was out at second. The hitting run was called, but Lockman missed the hit. Westrom was out easily, he didn't get it.
- 52:30So lemon served in five pitches in the second inning. First one came here in the third is ball one, two low.
- 52:37Lockman was called out on strikes in the first inning. Here's the windup.
- 52:48The next pitch is one and the line drive is hit. Foul, down the left field line, landing on the track, rolling into the Giants' bullpen.
- 53:03Four umpires around the infield, two on the foul line, lying up.
- 53:09Let's drive the left field foul line. Way down the right field foul line is Lon Wanakee.
- 53:17Lemon is heading into the one and one, pitches fouled into the dead. Rolls back to the screen. The counters ball one and strike two.
- 53:26One and two counts.
- 53:33The Giants, of course, looking for that fourth victory that would wrap up the World Series for this year.
- 53:44Bob Lemon, Indian right-hander, versus Don Little, the Giant left-hander. Lemon okays the sign. The count is one and two.
- 53:53The pitch is swung on the ground ball to the right side of the infield.
- 53:56Wirtz moves over to cover. Throws to Lemon at first base and Lockman is out.
- 54:01Lockman grounding out. First baseman to pitch in. Three-one, Wirtz, three-Lemon.
- 54:11Every manager would like to have a Bob Lemon on the mound in every ball game.
- 54:16Lemon is not only a pitcher, he is that fifth infielder.
- 54:20He knows how to come off the hill to cover it first. Cover either left or right on the bunch.
- 54:27He knows that the batter is topped into the dead.
- 54:30He can get you into a lot of trouble if you can't see the position.
- 54:33Kerspick to Doc. He swings and hits the line drive into left field. A base hit.
- 54:38Hanging the old clothesline out there with a sharp single.
- 54:41Doc has his fifth hit of the World Series. On first.
- 54:46With one out and the batter is Don Mueller.
- 54:50Mueller dropped a single into left center in the first inning with two outs.
- 54:58They call them pop fly singles or bog and basement singles, but they all count just as big as the others.
- 55:07Mueller is a left-hand batter, one of the real pros of the game.
- 55:12Runner on first. Alvin Doc. One out. First pitch to Mueller. Ball went inside.
- 55:20Too close to the batter.
- 55:25Giant players. A lot of the writers around the league.
- 55:29Follow this for Don Mueller. Man breaks the magician.
- 55:33He's a magician with that bat most of the time.
- 55:36Runner up to maize for the batting crown.
- 55:39He's down the next pitch and lines run into right fielder. Base hit. Doc makes the turn.
- 55:42A second is going to third. Westlake's throw coming into the infield.
- 55:45He fumbled the ball just briefly. The Doc is in it third easily.
- 55:55Runner down first and third and only one out.
- 56:00The score is New York 2, Cleveland nothing.
- 56:11So Mueller now has his second hit. A single this time into right.
- 56:16That is the fourth hit for the Giants.
- 56:19They really have their hitting clothes on in this series.
- 56:22Going into today's game, the Giants as a team were batting 232 as compared to the Indian average of 196 for the
- 56:32the ends of the World Series.
- 56:34Willie Mays right hand batter is up.
- 56:36Hakes ball went outside and low.
- 56:40Activity on the Indian bullpen.
- 56:43Number 16, Hal Newhousey warming up.
- 56:51Westlake fumbled that ball just briefly in right field but it had no bearing on the play.
- 56:57One out. Next pitch.
- 56:59Ball two outside. Another curve.
- 57:01Mays is refusing.
- 57:04This is the different Mays.
- 57:08Train training. The first part of the year he was going for a lot of bad pitches but no more.
- 57:17No strikes. Batter on deck is Henry Thompson.
- 57:21Now Lemon comes up with a stretch.
- 57:24The pitch is a strike. A curve ball. Broken the shot blade.
- 57:27Mays started for it but changed his mind.
- 57:34Dark on third and Mueller is on first.
- 57:37With only one out in the first half of third inning.
- 57:40Outfielders are deep and around toward left for Willie Mays.
- 57:43Number 24.
- 57:45The 2-1 pitch. He swings and bounces one over the third baseman's head.
- 57:48Rolling down the line.
- 57:49A one run score.
- 57:50Here is Mueller racing around second going for third.
- 57:53And Mays goes for two. In there standing up with a double.
- 57:56A two base hit and the score is New York 3, Cleveland nothing.
- 58:02The bounce went off the plate and bounced it over the third baseman's head.
- 58:05Good for two bases.
- 58:07That's his fourth hit of the series.
- 58:09The third defending for the Giants and the fifth of the game.
- 58:13Only one out here in the first of the fourths.
- 58:22Mueller on third and Mays is on second.
- 58:26They're going to flip Henry Thompson on.
- 58:28An intentional pass for the Giants third baseman.
- 58:31He walked his last time up.
- 58:33This will load the bases and of course makes possible the fourth play at any base.
- 58:46Unbatted end for Willie Mays.
- 58:49There's ball three.
- 58:52Monty Irvin is on deck.
- 58:55There's ball four to Thompson and the bases are loaded.
- 58:58An intentional pass.
- 59:00Irvin is going to do his own hitting here.
- 59:03The Giants lead. He did nothing.
- 59:07Irvin is looking back toward the dugout.
- 59:09I have a suspicion that a lot of the fans were expecting to see Mr. Desi Rhodes come out.
- 59:18The manager Leo D'Orocha expressing confidence in his regular left fielder.
- 59:27Irvin got off to a fine start the first part of the season.
- 59:30It plumps a little bit.
- 59:32First pitch for him is going inside a fastball.
- 59:36He doubles hard into left center the first time up.
- 59:48One out. The bases are loaded.
- 59:50Newman walks into the winged up the pitch.
- 59:52Just swinging the miss just like one.
- 59:54One and one to count.
- 59:56Out the open.
- 59:58Just about straight away.
- 1:00:00Dolby is pulled off center toward left.
- 1:00:02A shade.
- 1:00:04Right side of the infield.
- 1:00:07Good way in on the thin part of the infield.
- 1:00:10Hoping of course for the double play.
- 1:00:13Mueller on third. Mays on second.
- 1:00:16Thompson on first.
- 1:00:17The pitch is ball two outside.
- 1:00:20Ten one to count.
- 1:00:24The Giants lead by a score of three to nothing.
- 1:00:31Batter on deck is Baby Williams.
- 1:00:37Newman taking of his cap.
- 1:00:41Tucks on the sign.
- 1:00:42The count's two and one.
- 1:00:43Here's the pitch.
- 1:00:45Fouled back into the stands.
- 1:00:46Off to the right of the plate and the count is even up.
- 1:00:48Ball two and strike two.
- 1:00:57Way in on lefty.
- 1:00:58Right-hander.
- 1:00:59Rookie right-hander.
- 1:01:00Cross ball out of.
- 1:01:02Starts warming up.
- 1:01:03Alongside Hal Uhozard, the veteran left-hander.
- 1:01:09And they've seen a lot of service in World Series play as a member of the Detroit Tigers.
- 1:01:18There's the winged up.
- 1:01:19The runners move out.
- 1:01:20The 2-2 pitch.
- 1:01:21And a cloud into the dirt, rolls back of the plate.
- 1:01:24The bat goes out to the shortstop position.
- 1:01:28That slips out of Irvin's hand when flying to the left side of the infield.
- 1:01:34The count is still ball two and strike two.
- 1:01:41Herman Franks searching at third base, shouting down to Monty Irvin.
- 1:01:47New ball is tossed into play.
- 1:01:50Lemon in a tough spot, working very carefully.
- 1:01:54Wheeler is on third.
- 1:01:55Mays on second.
- 1:01:57Thompson on first.
- 1:01:59With only one out.
- 1:02:01The count is ball two and strike two.
- 1:02:08Ready on the sign.
- 1:02:10The wind up and the 2-2 pitch fouled back to the test bounce.
- 1:02:18Fine catch by one of the television cameramen who has a glove, a baseball glove today.
- 1:02:33There's a fellow that really came to play.
- 1:02:44Ball two and strike two.
- 1:02:48The next pitch is ball three inside.
- 1:02:50Lemon tried to get that inside corner.
- 1:02:533-2 was mighty close and the string is out.
- 1:03:05Now Monty Irvin backs out of there.
- 1:03:08It's a tense moment in the ball game for the fans.
- 1:03:11And one for the batter, the base runners.
- 1:03:15One out and they will be moving.
- 1:03:17Here's the wind up and the big pitch.
- 1:03:20A swing and a miss.
- 1:03:21He's stuck in now.
- 1:03:24Got him on a curve ball.
- 1:03:26And that was the famed lemon slider.
- 1:03:29They're two gone.
- 1:03:32Third strike out for Bob Lemon.
- 1:03:36That one a mighty important one.
- 1:03:39Still a rough little customer, Davy Williams stepping in.
- 1:03:47The blonde kid from Texas out of Dallas.
- 1:03:51Right hand batter.
- 1:03:54Takes ball one, a curve ball over but low.
- 1:03:56Williams lined to the first baseman.
- 1:03:58Vic Wirtz his first time up.
- 1:04:04It's a very slick little field of this Davy Williams.
- 1:04:08$65,000 purchase from Atlanta.
- 1:04:10Swings on the next pitch.
- 1:04:11A ground ball is hit to Rosen.
- 1:04:12He takes it, races to the bag ahead of Willie Mays for the out that retires the side.
- 1:04:17And Bob Lemon pulls out of it as Williams hits into a force play.
- 1:04:21Forcing Mays at third.
- 1:04:23Rosen unassisted.
- 1:04:27And for the Giants in the third inning, one run on a total of three hits.
- 1:04:33They came in succession.
- 1:04:34There was one walk.
- 1:04:36No errors and three men left on the bases.
- 1:04:39Going into the last half of the third inning, the score is New York 3 Cleveland nothing.
- 1:04:45Say, would you like to hear from one of the greatest ball hawks going?
- 1:04:49Well, here's right fielder Jimmy Pearsall of the Boston Red Sox.
- 1:04:53Who's spectacular leaping catches really leaves them gassing.
- 1:04:56Say, what brings you to Cleveland, Jim?
- 1:04:58I'm a reporter, Jimmy.
- 1:05:00Covering a series for a Boston newspaper.
- 1:05:02A reporter?
- 1:05:03Well, man, I've got news for you.
- 1:05:05You know, Boston is home base for Gillette.
- 1:05:07You can report Gillette razors are selling like crazy.
- 1:05:10And most of these fine looking young guys playing out here today use them too.
- 1:05:14That's no news to me, Jimmy.
- 1:05:16Most big leaguers go for Gillette shave.
- 1:05:18They're fast, they're clean, and they sure give you a swell lift.
- 1:05:21Thanks a lot, Jim.
- 1:05:22Say, how about giving that new Gillette super speed razor a try, man?
- 1:05:26It's all in one piece for easy blade changing.
- 1:05:29It costs you only a dollar, and the Gillette World Series record book is attached free.
- 1:05:34Going into the last half of the third inning, it was a real pleasure visiting with Jim Pearsall,
- 1:05:40that fine ball hawk from up there in Boston.
- 1:05:43Good old Fenway Pop was the scene of a lot of fine ball games this year.
- 1:05:50Jim Hegan leading off.
- 1:05:52The Indians now will try to get back in this ball game, trailing three to nothing.
- 1:05:58Hegan, then the pitcher, and back to the top of the batting order.
- 1:06:01First pitch to Hegan is ball one outside and low.
- 1:06:10The pitching performance by Lemon will give you some idea of why the experts call him one of the game's great competitors.
- 1:06:17There's ball two inside.
- 1:06:19Ball two, no strikes on Jim Hegan.
- 1:06:24Little has struck out one man, giving up only one hit, a double to Vic Wirtz.
- 1:06:30As yet to walk a batter.
- 1:06:33The count ball to no strikes.
- 1:06:35The outfielders are around toward left.
- 1:06:37There's ball three, high and outside.
- 1:06:39A shade, the count is three and nothing.
- 1:06:48A few more standees have come in since the game started.
- 1:06:52There'll be a bigger crowd than yesterday's.
- 1:06:58Certainly gives you a great thrill to sit in with a big crowd watching a ball game.
- 1:07:03The players get a big boot out of it, too.
- 1:07:05They like to play before the big houses.
- 1:07:07Here's the windup.
- 1:07:09The three and nothing pitches a strike.
- 1:07:11Better high right in there.
- 1:07:15It's for sure this boy, Don Little, will not go too long without getting one in for a strike.
- 1:07:23Three and one to count.
- 1:07:24Hegan takes ball four outside.
- 1:07:29A base on balls.
- 1:07:33First walk, given up by Little, and Hegan becomes the second Indian base runner of the game.
- 1:07:42That brings up Bob Lemon.
- 1:07:48Henry Thompson, the guy in third baseman, and to talk with the pitcher, Don Little.
- 1:07:54Helping to settle down.
- 1:07:58Little, of course, knows he's facing a tough aggregation of ballplayers.
- 1:08:03A team that won 111 games to set a new American League record.
- 1:08:07Lemon, left-hand batter.
- 1:08:09Hicks ball one outside with a curve.
- 1:08:13Lemon, through the years, has proved himself a pretty good hitting pitcher.
- 1:08:21The Giants lead three to nothing.
- 1:08:25Hegan leads off.
- 1:08:27Nobody out.
- 1:08:28The pitchers a strike.
- 1:08:29Fast ball.
- 1:08:30Little high to the inside corner.
- 1:08:31He'll take a bit off his fast ball occasionally.
- 1:08:36One and one to count.
- 1:08:39Batter on deck is Al Smith, the leadoff man.
- 1:08:43Thompson, the third baseman, still expecting the bunters, in on the grass.
- 1:08:47Next pitch is strike two.
- 1:08:50Knee high.
- 1:08:51Count is ball one and strike two.
- 1:09:00Outfielders are straight away.
- 1:09:03Hegan started it off with a walk.
- 1:09:08Little checks his sign.
- 1:09:11Here's the stretch.
- 1:09:12He'll look to the runner at first.
- 1:09:14And the pitch is swung on and popped up to the left side of the infield.
- 1:09:17Alvind D'Arc takes charge.
- 1:09:19He's under this one now, and he has it.
- 1:09:21We're out number one.
- 1:09:22One away.
- 1:09:33That brings up the leadoff batter.
- 1:09:36Al Smith, number 32.
- 1:09:39First time up with a count three and two.
- 1:09:40He pops to the second baseman, Davy Williams.
- 1:09:50Now the outfielders moving around toward left, deep in all fields.
- 1:09:54Big hole open out in right center.
- 1:09:57First pitch, strike call.
- 1:10:00Better high.
- 1:10:05Here's a fastball working to the outside corner.
- 1:10:08Strike one.
- 1:10:09Bobby Avila moves into the on-deck circle.
- 1:10:11Off to the right of the plate.
- 1:10:15Whitey Lockman holding at first base against Jim Hegan with the right-hand batter up.
- 1:10:19Next pitch is swung on.
- 1:10:20A ground ball is to the third baseman.
- 1:10:22And nice stop by Thompson.
- 1:10:23A throw to second.
- 1:10:24One away.
- 1:10:25Back to first at the double play.
- 1:10:27Around the horn.
- 1:10:29Hank Thompson moving to his left to spare that ball as it was heading into left field.
- 1:10:34Of course, Hegan with a throw to Williams.
- 1:10:37Williams' throw to first was in time for the double play.
- 1:10:43For the Indians in the third, no runs, no hits.
- 1:10:46Nothing across.
- 1:10:47At the end of three, the score is New York three, Cleveland nothing.
- 1:10:55Thompson has come up with some great plays in this series.
- 1:11:24He's played great baseball at third, taking care of some rough chances.
- 1:11:30And there was a ball that would have gone by at many third basemen in the majors, into left field.
- 1:11:36He stayed with it, caught it in the webbing of his glove.
- 1:11:39Rifled his throw over to second.
- 1:11:42Back to first, it was a double play.
- 1:11:46Now Lemon out taking his warm-up throws.
- 1:11:48And the first man up for the Giants in the fourth inning will be Wes Westrom.
- 1:11:53A giant catcher.
- 1:11:58Tony Cucinello is taking Lemon's warm-up throws.
- 1:12:04Al Rosen, the third baseman, moves out on the grass right back to the pitcher.
- 1:12:10Talking to his infielders.
- 1:12:14Denty of Elam and Wirtz.
- 1:12:17Now here comes the Indian catcher Jim Hegan out.
- 1:12:21Takes a little time to get all that gear on.
- 1:12:24The shin guards, the mask, and the chest protector.
- 1:12:31Once around the infield and back to the pitcher on the mound with the ball.
- 1:12:34And it's Wes Westrom leading off, number nine.
- 1:12:47Westrom is having a fine world series for himself. Two RBIs, three hits.
- 1:12:53Takes the strike, a curveball breaking to the outside corner.
- 1:12:58It was safe at first on an error, charged to the right fielder, Wally Westlake, in the second inning.
- 1:13:05Had a run batted in.
- 1:13:08Next pitch is fouled back into the upper deck, landing in the press box.
- 1:13:14And the counter strike two, 0-2 on the batter.
- 1:13:19In case some of you are still wondering about it, the official ruling on the fly ball by Westrom in the second inning
- 1:13:25was a sacrifice fly and then an error charged to the right fielder, Westlake, who had the ball but dropped it.
- 1:13:33Next pitch is wide of a plate, gets away from the catcher, back to the screen.
- 1:13:37Strike one and strike two.
- 1:13:45The Giants have a total of five hits as against only one for the Indians.
- 1:13:49The Giants have three runs.
- 1:13:51An all-important baseball commodity.
- 1:13:56Outfield is a round toward left.
- 1:13:59The one and two pitch, a swing and a miss.
- 1:14:01He struck him out.
- 1:14:03Westrom goes down swinging.
- 1:14:05Strike out for Bob Lemon.
- 1:14:07Coming up is the pitcher, Don Little, while we're waiting for him.
- 1:14:11Let's pause ten seconds for station identification.
- 1:14:14This is Mutual, the radio network for all America.
- 1:14:19WGN, your exclusive World Series station in Chicago.
- 1:14:30Number 37, Don Little stepping into the batter's box. He was called out on strikes in the second inning.
- 1:14:40Lemon's first pitch.
- 1:14:42Ball one. Over but too low.
- 1:14:44Ball one to count.
- 1:14:51The fourth game of the 1954 World Series being played here at Cleveland.
- 1:14:55Next pitch to Little. He swings and hits it foul into the dirt.
- 1:14:58Hit him on the foot, in fact.
- 1:15:00He reaches down to the end step.
- 1:15:03Trying to shake it off.
- 1:15:07Those little foul tips can really hurt you.
- 1:15:17Count is even. Ball one and strike one.
- 1:15:21One out and nobody on right now.
- 1:15:25Lead off batter, Whitey Loughman, swinging the bat in the on deck circle.
- 1:15:33Lemon chewing that gum a mile a minute.
- 1:15:37Comes down to the next pitch, a strike call.
- 1:15:41Better high. Little step back from it.
- 1:15:45Ball one and strike two.
- 1:15:51Here's the windup.
- 1:15:53The next pitch, just swinging the mitts. He struck him out.
- 1:15:56Little goes down swinging.
- 1:15:59A total of five strikeouts for the Indian right-hander.
- 1:16:03And it brings up Whitey Loughman, who was a strikeout victim in the first inning.
- 1:16:08In the third inning he grounded out to the first baseman, Vic Wirtz.
- 1:16:22Barry Dolby pulled off center toward right.
- 1:16:25Wally Westlake is deep and straight away.
- 1:16:28Someone okays the sign. The first pitch to Loughman. A strike it is to the outside corner waist-side.
- 1:16:34Strike one and the count.
- 1:16:40Whitey Loughman still makes his home down in Charlotte, his native North Carolina.
- 1:16:45Next pitch, a line drive right back to them and he knocks it down, picks it up.
- 1:16:48Here's the total first in time. A fine recovery. Loughman is out. Pitcher the first.
- 1:16:55One-three.
- 1:16:57Boy, that's one of those line drives. You throw up your glove and say a little prayer.
- 1:17:05The Giants go down in the fourth inning. No runs, no hits, nothing across.
- 1:17:10And going into the last half of the fourth inning, the score is New York 3, Cleveland nothing.
- 1:17:18I know plenty of you men swear by Gillette's three-piece razor. And more power to you.
- 1:17:23Sure, you're getting slick shaves, but here's news for you.
- 1:17:26Today's Gillette's super-speed razor gives you all that and then some.
- 1:17:30It's made in one piece, so you don't take it apart and put it together again when changing blades.
- 1:17:35All you do is twist the handle, hook on a blade, and twist again.
- 1:17:39Blade changing is that easy, and a quick rinse cleans the razor for your next shave.
- 1:17:44Then you get this wonderfully convenient razor for just one dollar.
- 1:17:48We've been telling you about the new and large Gillette World Series record book, too.
- 1:17:53Well, it's attached and it's free.
- 1:17:55Better tie down your copy before the fast-moving supply is all gone.
- 1:18:01Last half of the fourth inning, and Don Little has finished his warm-up shows,
- 1:18:06ready to pitch to Bobby Avila, Indian second baseman.
- 1:18:13There's a more exciting atmosphere here at the ballpark in Cleveland today.
- 1:18:18Maybe it's the weather. Maybe it's the fans calling for the underdogs,
- 1:18:23hoping to help the Indians to that first victory that will carry the series into more games.
- 1:18:29The Giants lead three games to nothing, and are ahead in this fourth game.
- 1:18:33The score right now, three to nothing.
- 1:18:36First pitch to Avila is a strike, right in there at the knees with a curveball.
- 1:18:43Watching this little left-hander, you know now why they call him the boy with pinpoint control.
- 1:18:53Here's the windup. Next pitch, ball one, over but low. One and one to count.
- 1:19:00Avila laced into a pitch in the first inning, but lined it right to the second baseman, Davy Williams.
- 1:19:11Irvin, the left fielder, is deep and straight away.
- 1:19:14The one and one pitch is swung on and popped up.
- 1:19:16Back of second base, Alvin Doth, moving back onto the grass, is under it, and he has it.
- 1:19:22Out number one.
- 1:19:28Sort of looks like that Giants we've been talking about so often is following Bobby Avila.
- 1:19:34Many batting champions have found it very rough when they did get into a World Series,
- 1:19:39and certainly Avila is. He's had only two hits.
- 1:19:45Got one the first time up. Has had rough going since then.
- 1:19:49Larry Doby, the next batter, left-hand batter, takes ball one outside, a curveball breaking away from him.
- 1:19:56Doby struck out his first time up in the first inning.
- 1:19:59Little's only strikeout thus far.
- 1:20:03Last to the fourth, one out and nobody on.
- 1:20:06Next pitch, Doby pulls it foul, off to the right.
- 1:20:10Ball one and strike one. Even count.
- 1:20:18Little has been in no trouble thus far.
- 1:20:22The Indians open the third with a base on balls, but after them it had popped out.
- 1:20:26Smith hit into a double play.
- 1:20:28Wirtz doubled in the second inning for the only hit off the giant left-hander.
- 1:20:34The one-and-one pitch. Doby swings and hits a ground ball to the right side of the infield.
- 1:20:38Williams scoots over up with it, the throw to first, and Doby is out.
- 1:20:42Doby grounding out. Williams to Loughman, four-three.
- 1:20:49I don't know whether this series goes past four games, there's still anybody's guess.
- 1:20:53But you know something, back in 1887, under different rules, the series lasted fifteen games, believe it or not.
- 1:20:59You've got this and a raft of other dope in the Gillette World Series Record Book.
- 1:21:04Right-handed for you.
- 1:21:07Al Rosen steps in with two outs. Nobody on. He takes ball one high and outside.
- 1:21:15Last half of the fourth inning. The score is New York three, Cleveland nothing.
- 1:21:23Outfielders deep and around toward left.
- 1:21:26Next pitch is swung on. The fly ball hits foul down the right-field line.
- 1:21:29It'll be in the stands, but out of play.
- 1:21:34It's a long strike.
- 1:21:46Batter on deck is Vic Wirtz, the best of the only hit off Don Little.
- 1:21:54Rosen looking for hit number three in this series.
- 1:21:58There's the pitch. He swings, fouls, hits it into the catcher's glove for strike two.
- 1:22:04Ball one, strike two to count.
- 1:22:10Willie Mays playing over in left center.
- 1:22:12Monty Irvin back to the edge of the track, straight away in left.
- 1:22:19Little rocks into the windup. The one and two pitch is ball two.
- 1:22:25Missed by a half. Two-two count.
- 1:22:40Rosen steps back into the batter's box.
- 1:22:44He uses the closed stance, front foot up close to the plate.
- 1:22:50Then strides forward into the pitch.
- 1:22:52Here it is, swung on, a ground ball, a grass cutter.
- 1:22:55Hit to the shortstop. Donk is up with it. The total first in time.
- 1:22:58Rosen is out, and the Indians light the dust.
- 1:23:01One, two, three. No runs, no hits.
- 1:23:06And so at the end of pointing the score, the Giants have three runs on five hits.
- 1:23:11No errors. The Indians, no runs, one hit, and two errors.
- 1:23:15You know, folks, it may surprise you to know that every 20 seconds,
- 1:23:19there's a fire somewhere in this great nation of ours.
- 1:23:22Every year, fires kill over 12,000 people and cause $800 million of property damage.
- 1:23:29Now, to help prevent a fire in your home, why don't you try to observe these four rules?
- 1:23:34Number one, don't smoke in bed or discard lighted cigarettes or matches carelessly.
- 1:23:39Number two, clean out old newspapers, mattresses, broken furniture, and other flammable materials.
- 1:23:45Number three, promptly repair defective electrical equipment.
- 1:23:49Replace worn or frayed wiring.
- 1:23:51And number four, use cleaning fluids that won't burn.
- 1:23:54In other words, don't gamble with fire. The odds are against you.
- 1:24:05Bit of excitement down to our left here.
- 1:24:08Some of the folks peering into the giant dugout, trying to get a look at the boys.
- 1:24:13And of course, folks wanting to see what notables are around them, and there are a lot of them here.
- 1:24:19From everywhere, movie stars, stars of radio and television, notables in public life.
- 1:24:29Out on the field, the two championship teams, champions of the National League, the New York Giants,
- 1:24:34champions of the American League, the Cleveland Indians.
- 1:24:37The fourth game, the Giants taking the first three games.
- 1:24:42This one, they could lock it up.
- 1:24:45They lead by a score of three to nothing.
- 1:24:47And Bob Lemon is ready to work now as Alvin Dock steps into the batter's box.
- 1:24:51Dock has one out of two in this game.
- 1:24:53Fouls the first pitch back into the screen, strike one.
- 1:25:01The Dock is doing all right.
- 1:25:04He now has five hits in the 54 World Series.
- 1:25:08This is his 16th World Series game.
- 1:25:11Next pitch is too low.
- 1:25:13Ball one, one and one. The count is even up.
- 1:25:18Giants got two in the second.
- 1:25:21Loose Indian play. Added one in the third to lead three to nothing.
- 1:25:25Next pitch, Dock swings and hits a fireball going out into left center.
- 1:25:28It's going to drop in there for a base hit.
- 1:25:34He's single for Alvin Dock as he drops one into left center.
- 1:25:42Those are the ones the boys kid you about in the clubhouse.
- 1:25:49Come on and say, what are you hitting with, a bamboo stick?
- 1:25:54Banjo, Red Creston's favorite expression.
- 1:25:57What are you batting with? What are you hitting with?
- 1:25:59Sporting nudes?
- 1:26:04Don Mueller is up. A left hand batter with the runner on first.
- 1:26:07Nobody out.
- 1:26:10A pitch out called for, but Dock is holding it first.
- 1:26:14Two pitches again warming up in the Indian bulk then. Left hand to Hal Neuhauser.
- 1:26:18Right hand to Ray Nalesky.
- 1:26:24Outfield straight away for Mueller.
- 1:26:26He has two for two.
- 1:26:28Devin checks the runner.
- 1:26:30The pitch is swung and there's a line drive hit into right field for base hit.
- 1:26:33Dock races to second, makes the turn.
- 1:26:34West leg is up with the ball. The throw over the third is cut off by Dentie.
- 1:26:37Mueller holding it first.
- 1:26:42There's that man Mueller coming through with his third straight hit.
- 1:26:46The Giants now have a total of seven.
- 1:26:56This was the set up we had in the third inning.
- 1:26:59Dock single into left.
- 1:27:01Mueller moved into third with a single into right.
- 1:27:05Nobody out and the batter is Willie Mays.
- 1:27:09In the third inning they did have one out.
- 1:27:15Mays doubled his last time up.
- 1:27:18Infield back in normal position.
- 1:27:21Mueller leads off first. Dock on third.
- 1:27:24The pitch to Mays is ball one outside and low.
- 1:27:29Mueller now has seven hits in the series.
- 1:27:33That ties in with big work.
- 1:27:37Here's the stretch by Lemon.
- 1:27:39The pitch is too low for ball two. Two in no count.
- 1:27:48Three straight hits so that's a fine performance.
- 1:27:53Last two have been dropped singles into right field.
- 1:27:56Hitting behind that runner moving away from first.
- 1:28:02That's the reason the runs had left deep in all fields for Mays.
- 1:28:05And he can hit the all field.
- 1:28:07The turn up in pitch.
- 1:28:08Gouled off into the stands back of first.
- 1:28:10He was trying to hit the right field.
- 1:28:12He moved up on the pitch.
- 1:28:14The count is now two and one.
- 1:28:16Ball two, strike one to count.
- 1:28:26Seven hits for the Giants as against one for the Indians.
- 1:28:30The Giants have hit safely in every inning except the fourth.
- 1:28:33Lemon retired the minota.
- 1:28:39That's the only time that he has been able to do it.
- 1:28:44The Giants had three hits in the third inning.
- 1:28:46We had a like situation.
- 1:28:48That's what we have now.
- 1:28:51The two on pitch fouled back to the screen.
- 1:28:55Ball two and strike two.
- 1:29:00Mays in the first inning fouled out to the first baseman work.
- 1:29:04But in the third he bounced a double over Rosenfeld down the left field corner.
- 1:29:14Right now he's trying for a base hit or a fly ball.
- 1:29:18Sacrifice fly that would bring a run home.
- 1:29:21Rock on third.
- 1:29:23Mueller on first.
- 1:29:26Rock in yesterday's game showed us a brilliant bit of base running.
- 1:29:29And he trapped the team third and home allowing runners to move up to second third before he was tagged out.
- 1:29:35The two to pick is low into the deck.
- 1:29:37Good stop by Jim Hegan to avoid trouble.
- 1:29:41And the string is out.
- 1:29:43Full count of three and two.
- 1:29:47Semmon tosses the ball into the umpire who wants to look it over.
- 1:29:51Umpire John Sheevan of the American League umpiring staff.
- 1:30:03Long with the other American League umpires under Kyle Hubbard all season long.
- 1:30:08He did a great job of calling 154 games.
- 1:30:12In the case of the Indians, 156 they played two tie games.
- 1:30:18Count three and two. Here's the stretch. Semmon checks to the runner first.
- 1:30:21The pick fouled back into the stand.
- 1:30:24Count remains three and two.
- 1:30:28This is the first of the fifth.
- 1:30:30With the Giants leading by a score of three to nothing.
- 1:30:37They scrambled for the first two games in New York.
- 1:30:40Won yesterday's game easily.
- 1:30:43And came out slugging in this one.
- 1:30:46Time is called. A ball gets away from Bill Lobey,
- 1:30:50Indian captain coach who is working with Ray Narleski down in the bullpen.
- 1:30:59Lobey has been with the Indians for 25 years. He and Mo Harder,
- 1:31:03two of the men who have been around the Indians and Cleveland baseball picture for a long time.
- 1:31:12New York is on third. He led off with a single. Mueller on third. He singled in the right.
- 1:31:16The third, go here. Nobody else.
- 1:31:19Semmon has his time.
- 1:31:21There's the pitch.
- 1:31:23Ball four, up side and low with a curve. He walks in.
- 1:31:26And the bases are loaded. Here comes our locals.
- 1:31:29The manager out of the Indian dugout.
- 1:31:34Henry Thompson is the batter.
- 1:31:40And Thompson, now on deck, has walked five times.
- 1:31:45Three of them were intentional walks and he has scored five times.
- 1:31:57The pitcher being called in by our locals is Hal Neuhaezer.
- 1:32:02The change left-hander, Tommy Rupsey, the short-tiger, being called into the game to fix to Henry Thompson.
- 1:32:12We're talking about Thompson's bases on balls. He has walked six times.
- 1:32:15The last time up he got an intentional pass, remember?
- 1:32:23So that is us to Bob Lemmon.
- 1:32:25Leaving the game now.
- 1:32:29He has worked four innings, nobody out.
- 1:32:35Lemmon used 74 pitches in working four and the fashion innings,
- 1:32:41now he gets no credit for more than the four innings and for an in-out, the bases are loaded.
- 1:32:46To give up a total of seven hits.
- 1:32:56He walks three men, cuts out five, and has allowed three runs and is leaving the bases loaded.
- 1:33:04If any or all of these men score, they will be charged to him.
- 1:33:10And on the other side of the pitcher, the giant left-hander, John Little, wasn't given up a run yet, only one hit.
- 1:33:17Here back in 1905, Christian Matheson, hit three shutouts in one World Series.
- 1:33:23You're going to get worse without your fingertips in the Gillette World Series record books.
- 1:33:28Al Neuhauser, left-hander.
- 1:33:34And the first man to face him would be left-hand batter Henry Thompson.
- 1:33:38He's walked twice and scored one.
- 1:33:42The bases are loaded.
- 1:33:46Pitchers by one high and inside.
- 1:33:53He proved to be a very valuable asset to the Indians in 1944 during the regular season.
- 1:33:59He appeared in 26 ball games.
- 1:34:07He won seven and lost two.
- 1:34:10The next pitch, the base strike with a pair of letter highs to the left-hander and batter Henry Thompson.
- 1:34:18Neuhauser, about an 8-1 average of 2.51.
- 1:34:25In 1945, he took from the World Series as a member of the Detroit Tigers, working three games, one two and lost one.
- 1:34:36The one-and-one pitchers, no under the desk, good pick-up by Jim Hedon.
- 1:34:40The bases are loaded.
- 1:34:45Nobody out for the dance in the first half of the fifth inning.
- 1:34:48The score is New York 3, three to nothing.
- 1:34:56Neuhauser's shot from the play.
- 1:35:04Neuhauser will come on with the microphone shortly.
- 1:35:07We'll remember that 1945 series.
- 1:35:09He did it.
- 1:35:10The next pitch is ball three, outspout and low, and Neuhauser is in a block of trouble.
- 1:35:19The bases are loaded.
- 1:35:20No place to put this runner unless he won a left-hander and scored.
- 1:35:24That's what will happen if he walks in.
- 1:35:26Here's the windup.
- 1:35:27The 3-1 pitch bowed back to the screen.
- 1:35:30Thompson was swinging on that 3-1.
- 1:35:36The swing is out, four-counter, three and two.
- 1:35:39It's back on third, Neuhauser on second, and Neuhauser on first.
- 1:35:55Neuhauser tightens the cap on his head with his left hand.
- 1:35:57Here's the windup.
- 1:35:58The pitcher puts his ball for a high-hand inside.
- 1:36:01Failed to break that curve, and the course is in the run.
- 1:36:05The bases are still loaded.
- 1:36:06Still nobody out, and the Giants now lead by a score of 40-nothing.
- 1:36:12Run batted in for Thompson and his third walk in today's game.
- 1:36:20That brings up the right-hand batter, Monty Irvin.
- 1:36:24First pitch to Irvin is bow-one-two high.
- 1:36:33The run scored there by having bow to charge against Bob Lemon.
- 1:36:43Giants lead 40-nothing.
- 1:36:47Neuhauser checks his hand, moves the windup, and the pitch fouled out.
- 1:36:52They go out of the plate, going back into the stands.
- 1:37:04One-and-one the count.
- 1:37:11Now we'll have Neuhauser on third, Neuhauser on second, Thompson on first.
- 1:37:17Fast man on the bases.
- 1:37:18The next pitch is a strike to the inside corner.
- 1:37:21Irvin pulled out of the way.
- 1:37:22It is now bow-one and strike two.
- 1:37:30Batter on deck is Ovi Williams.
- 1:37:32Irvin opened up twice, a double in the second inning.
- 1:37:36He struck out in the third.
- 1:37:37The count, bow-one and strike two.
- 1:37:40Neuhauser rocks into the windup.
- 1:37:42The pitch is high for bow-two, two-and-two count.
- 1:37:45Try to get a fast ball in there.
- 1:37:49Neuhauser, he really had a quicker of a fast ball.
- 1:37:54He was a pitcher that really blown by a batter.
- 1:38:01All right, the pitcher picks.
- 1:38:02Irvin claims and wraps one into that field.
- 1:38:04A base hit.
- 1:38:05He looks for a good move.
- 1:38:06He's raising the round for it.
- 1:38:07He comes down to score.
- 1:38:08The throw by Alton is under the wind to loose that.
- 1:38:12Thompson at second.
- 1:38:13And here comes Al Lopez out of the Indian dugout.
- 1:38:17As two runs come home, a single in the left for Marty Irvin and the Giants lead by a score of six to nothing.
- 1:38:25Two runs batted in by the Giants left fielder.
- 1:38:28He started today's game with a zero batting effort.
- 1:38:32Now has two hits and two runs batted in.
- 1:38:39All three of these runs that are scored are charged to Bob Lemon.
- 1:38:42So he has given a fixed run in the four innings that he worked.
- 1:38:47The Giants lead fixed to nothing, and that is going to be all for Al Neuhauser.
- 1:38:51Ray Narlaski, a right-hander, is being called into the game.
- 1:38:56Runners on first and second with nobody out.
- 1:39:03So Neuhauser had a brief play on the mound.
- 1:39:08The Kings are just two men.
- 1:39:11The Giants lead with no innings, nobody out.
- 1:39:17They'll have one hook, one man.
- 1:39:20And while he was allowed no runs of drop, to be the lead for them in score, they will be charged to him.
- 1:39:31Ray Narlaski, the hard-nosed rookie, right-hander, coming on.
- 1:39:39He earned him 89 innings during the regular season.
- 1:39:43Now that's the first with a fine earned one average of 2.22, charging us 52 batting.
- 1:39:53Taking his warm-up pose now.
- 1:40:02Ray Narlaski, like all youngsters, wanted to be a starting pitcher.
- 1:40:07Down at Indianapolis in the American Association last year, Teddy Kovitz, then manager of that ball club, and Ted Wilk, a pitching coach, also on the roster during the season, last season,
- 1:40:20Wilk was then discussed it and recommended that he take over relief pitching for us.
- 1:40:27And under their tutelage and encouragement, Narlaski came on to be one of the fan relief artists of the American Association.
- 1:40:35And they did during the Indianapolis Spring training of this year.
- 1:40:43Runners were on first and second with nobody out.
- 1:40:46Three runs are home for the Giants. They lead by a score of 6-0.
- 1:40:50First half of the fifth inning.
- 1:40:52Stepping into the batter's box is Jody Williams.
- 1:40:55He goes for two.
- 1:40:57He hits the first pitch foul down the first base line out of place, like one.
- 1:41:13Thompson on second. Monty Irvin on first.
- 1:41:18So Irvin is a much happier boy right now than he was before today's game.
- 1:41:22John Hickness in the first three games lifted for a 10-20.
- 1:41:27Next pitch into Williams is Bowen inside. He was going to bounce back about out of the way.
- 1:41:34Even up front, Bowen in second.
- 1:41:38Williams, ever alert, back of the post, boom up over the plate, but the runners were holding.
- 1:41:43Thompson on second. Irvin on first.
- 1:41:46The refs will lose it. Round toward left.
- 1:41:52Batter on deck is Russ Weston.
- 1:41:57Now let's take the stretch.
- 1:41:59The Putschman has the bounce. Puts down the first base line.
- 1:42:01West is up with a 10-megapixel second.
- 1:42:03A third post to Putschman. Williams is out on the sacrifice.
- 1:42:08The runners on second and third went out, and the batter is Weston.
- 1:42:18Sacrifice for Williams. He goes out.
- 1:42:22And the ref is just going.
- 1:42:243-4, first baseman to second baseman covering the post.
- 1:42:29The Weston. Now steps into the batter's box. The infielder's in place.
- 1:42:33First pitch is by one, too low.
- 1:42:43Thompson on third. Irvin on second.
- 1:42:47Andrew Lindsay at in-place.
- 1:42:49The next pitch is done on a far ball going into shot right center.
- 1:42:52Weston closing their own movement.
- 1:42:54He's under now the runner third.
- 1:42:56The first coming in throws the runner in too late is the throw.
- 1:42:59Irvin moves to third.
- 1:43:00On the third of the plate is Thompson's third.
- 1:43:03Sacrifice for Weston, his second one today, and his second one batted in in today's game.
- 1:43:11Thompson's third, the first grand run of the inning.
- 1:43:17They lead now by a score of 7-0.
- 1:43:21On the third of the plate by Weston, Irvin moves to third base.
- 1:43:26They're two away and the pitcher down little is coming up.
- 1:43:38The Weston now has three runs batted in this game.
- 1:43:41Little left-hand batter swings and misses. Take one, the first pitch is in.
- 1:43:49Three runs in this inning, a charge to Lemon and one to New Yorkers.
- 1:43:53Looks like swing on a ground ball to the right side of the wimpy.
- 1:43:56The real charge is a batter with a plenty of time.
- 1:43:58The fellow person living his life as bad as he's had.
- 1:44:06Down they're kicking into the ground.
- 1:44:08Big better here.
- 1:44:10Four runs and a total of three hits and one man left on the base.
- 1:44:19There are a few walks in there.
- 1:44:22Coming into the last half of the season, he destroys New York's seven Cleveland Nets.
- 1:44:28Hey, man, there's something really special about a shaving cream field with today's
- 1:44:33alert super speed laser.
- 1:44:35Listen, it's clean. Just as clean as a shave possibly can be.
- 1:44:39And looks good for a long time, too.
- 1:44:42Yes, and it's wonderfully refreshing.
- 1:44:44Better give your lips when you're trying to get started in the morning
- 1:44:47or keep going in the evening.
- 1:44:49If you're not using this up to the minute, one to three minutes,
- 1:44:52then you're passing up a mighty good thing.
- 1:44:54The clean blades in their jiffy.
- 1:44:57A quick rinse, clean it.
- 1:44:58There you save time and you save batter.
- 1:45:01Be sure to ask for a deluxe super speed laser.
- 1:45:03This three-blade, the concern travel kit is just one dollar.

- 1:45:12So you better get yours right away.
- 1:45:13That's a plow. It won't last for long.
- 1:45:17Going into the last round for the fifth inning where at Cleveland's Municipal Stadium,
- 1:45:20the brand-new seven to nothing.
- 1:45:22And now taking over the microphone to tie on in this bargain over neutral
- 1:45:26and facing all over the world is Al Helfer.
- 1:45:29Al, come on in.
- 1:45:30How about Jimmy? It's been rough.
- 1:45:32Four and one half an inch so far as far as the three and the Indians are concerned.
- 1:45:35The Indians are eating in seven to nothing.
- 1:45:37Only one here having been surrendered here by Brown Middle.
- 1:45:40The left-handed delivers now.
- 1:45:41The Vick was the swinger and there's a high five ball hitting the straightaway center field.
- 1:45:44And the north-hundred makes the catch and we have outnumbered runs in the last half of the number five.
- 1:45:50And before Wally Westlake comes up to the plate, let's pause for a 10-second full-station identification.
- 1:45:55This is Newt Road, the radio network for all America.
- 1:46:00Seven to nothing, the Congress of the Indian State serving the Midwest.
- 1:46:10The plate steps to Wally Westlake. The big right hand here to take the first pitch, fired in there by Liddy.
- 1:46:15It blows a big one.
- 1:46:17Westlake came up in the second and he hit first time after the play today
- 1:46:20and the left side being thrown out by Sharks, Swab, Alvin, Vance.
- 1:46:43Westlake after the next pitch, cuts a high five ball after the right of the screen, coming back by the spectators and into the side.
- 1:46:49Great throw on Wally. One ball and two strikes.
- 1:46:56We were talking yesterday about a team that had won three games in the World Series.
- 1:47:05They'd won three games, they hadn't gone on to lose it.
- 1:47:08And there's several guys that come around to say that that was so.
- 1:47:13We'll tell you why it isn't in a moment.
- 1:47:15Two balls to the other Westlake to swing on. There's a half-up up off the first base line.
- 1:47:19They're just in foul territory outside of first. The catch is made by Westlake and Wally left.
- 1:47:30The better now is Sam Gendry. The set-up.
- 1:47:33The wind is coming up in the second. The wind goes really nice back in the center field.
- 1:47:36It's a good round-tile ball. Good play on it for both sides.
- 1:47:40We said the first team had overlapped three ball games and then come back to win.
- 1:47:47That's the first three.
- 1:47:49Well, some of the fans around the center said it's first in the 1925 World Series.
- 1:47:55It's held between Washington and Pittsburgh.
- 1:47:57The first pitch for Gendry is World Football 1.
- 1:48:00But it's, you'll go back to the World Series record books published by the Lefty of Congress through the period.
- 1:48:08Westlake swing under them far back to the back.
- 1:48:10The count is running out.
- 1:48:13In that World Series, Pittsburgh took the second ball game.
- 1:48:18All-rigged beating Kovaleski.
- 1:48:28Now they're set.
- 1:48:30Time comes to pitch. Gendry swings on it.
- 1:48:32He can never have a looping foul ball after the right of the play.
- 1:48:34The swings are back into the freshman side of the field.
- 1:48:37Down and for Gendry, his rim ball two strikes two down.
- 1:48:39Last half of the first inning, nobody on for Cleveland.
- 1:48:41Then the score is down to New York 7 and Cleveland's nothing.
- 1:48:45Don Little, not a surprise starter, but certainly a surprise to the Indians.
- 1:48:49The way he was hit here this afternoon has given up on a one-day hit.
- 1:48:52That's an awkward sort of double.
- 1:48:54As Jimmy tells you in his second inning, he's hit in the alley in right turn of field.
- 1:48:57All the way back to the fence.
- 1:48:59That's the only day's blowout, Don Little.
- 1:49:02The left-hander twists, hits and throws.
- 1:49:04That's a curve to Gendry, and it stays outside. That's all two.
- 1:49:08Two balls and two strikes.
- 1:49:12If I remember right, there was a score in that second game of the World Series in 1925.
- 1:49:15That's a curve to Washington.
- 1:49:16The score is three in favor of that third.
- 1:49:21The big deep end was a bit too much of an interesting time.
- 1:49:23It was all-rigged to Kovaleski.
- 1:49:24The put the swing on by Gendry, a bounding ball off the plate.
- 1:49:26Down first base to Joe.
- 1:49:27There it is.
- 1:49:28Little trying to cover a first base taking the cross from Yadie Loughlin, and it's not in time.
- 1:49:33Where did the forecourt look at that?
- 1:49:36We'll go on a minute.
- 1:49:37Whether it's going to go as an error or a base hit.
- 1:49:41Waiting for the officials for her to give us a verdict.
- 1:49:45It's going to be an error, but for him, is there a charge on the throw or is it a charge on the pitcher?
- 1:49:51It's a charge apparently on the throw.
- 1:49:57It's not done the pitcher.
- 1:49:58Thank you very much, Mr. Jones.
- 1:50:00Now, down the pitcher, there's Sam Gunter as the winner of first base.
- 1:50:05Don Hewley, failing to cut first base as he took one of the rocks and flew.
- 1:50:10Well, we have the first guy there here this afternoon, charge at the pitcher middle.
- 1:50:16Now, little is going to pitch to Jim Hegan.
- 1:50:18He dies and Jim takes a lot of cold ball from there for a start.
- 1:50:22He was a little early on the board, Dad.
- 1:50:24Don Hewley is known as a shot-off in front pitcher.
- 1:50:28And he does a lot of his pitching low, right down to the knees.
- 1:50:34Now, it's up to the pitcher.
- 1:50:35He can swing on it and loses it back a second.
- 1:50:38There is David Williams over there, caught it to the ball and all hands are safe.
- 1:50:41They made a nice knockdown but couldn't come up with it.
- 1:50:45They couldn't come up with the ball.
- 1:50:47So, the Indians have winners at first and second.
- 1:50:51And now, once again, we go to Mr. McCullough, Mr. Jones, and Mr. Comenco to see what they've decided on this play.
- 1:50:56It's a hard smash back to second base.
- 1:50:58David Williams over knocked it down, made a nice play of it, and he was being charged with the air.
- 1:51:04As when he tried to pull the ball out of his glove, connected flow, he got it on the wind field.
- 1:51:13So, Hans Magresti comes up now to bat for Naileski.
- 1:51:16Magresti batting for Naileski, who went winning here this afternoon.
- 1:51:20Then Magresti comes up to bat.
- 1:51:28The Indians are trying to make a little hay here while the Sun's trying down the Nistle Stadium.
- 1:51:32And here in the last half of the first inning, up comes Magresti, Hans Magresti to bat for Pitcher Lillian Naileski.
- 1:51:40That means we'll have the fourth pitcher in for the Cougar Indians.
- 1:51:48Magresti who played yesterday, coming up to the third right now.
- 1:51:54He has no batting for second. He is 0-5 in the third game.
- 1:51:57Swings on the first pitch and fires it back to the screen.
- 1:52:00Looks like that.
- 1:52:03Down the bullpen.
- 1:52:05Got a left hander, John Murphy, warming up.
- 1:52:07Looks like there'll be a few coming on.
- 1:52:09The first game, they drop out for second for third.
- 1:52:14Two errors. The two down here in the last half of the first inning have given the Redmond Indians the best opportunity of the entire day.
- 1:52:24One error tried to Pitcher Lillian, the other one tried to the second baseman, Williams.
- 1:52:30Now the Indians are both delivers.
- 1:52:32Magresti swings, hits a long drive deep in the left field.
- 1:52:34There's a pretty well-hit ball.
- 1:52:36It's a home run for Magresti.
- 1:53:06And this it is, the oldest eligible player here in this World Series.
- 1:53:18Hank Magresti comes running off the bench and puts Cleveland back into the ball game with a 3-1 home run.
- 1:53:24It's now 7-4 over the Giants.
- 1:53:26A guy Smith steps up here for the Cougar Indians.
- 1:53:28The two down in the base of the front. He takes the first pitch low for ball one.
- 1:53:32A hard smash by Hank Magresti.
- 1:53:35That'll be the third home run for Cleveland in the series.
- 1:53:38The pitch to play is taken high and off the shoulder by Smith.
- 1:53:41That's our two.
- 1:53:43And we have double-barred activity down in the bullpen for the New York Giants.
- 1:53:47We've got a right-hander up there for him.
- 1:53:49We'll have a left-hander in a moment.
- 1:53:51Brown Ridders.
- 1:53:52He's almost invincible up until his fifth inning.
- 1:53:55And certainly he has been cut.
- 1:53:56Two errors, of course.
- 1:53:58Open the door.
- 1:54:00These ones will not be earned.
- 1:54:01And Hank Magresti is not in here in the first inning or not to be earned.
- 1:54:05Brown comes to pitch to Smith to throw.
- 1:54:07That's the first pitch.
- 1:54:10So we've had two 3-1 home runs in this world series.
- 1:54:13One by Dr. Yorke, who was down from the first game.
- 1:54:16And here's Magresti this afternoon.
- 1:54:18I'd like to find the fouls he threw.
- 1:54:20Minister Shademan-Cubans with a 3-1 home run.
- 1:54:23Cranked over the left field barrier.
- 1:54:26Not even went high and couldn't make the catch.
- 1:54:29The left field bar was hit about 380 feet from home play.
- 1:54:34The house-maker was hit one of the home runs for Cleveland in this series.
- 1:54:37He's up at the plate now.
- 1:54:38The three-yard pitch is going to go fast.
- 1:54:40Lady North is straight.
- 1:54:46They look to stand for opportunity.
- 1:54:48Rapidly running through the man-net for the hourglass of time.
- 1:54:51Cleveland is trying to do something about it.
- 1:54:58The pitcher puts the plate, there's the fastball.
- 1:55:00It's open on the outside, goes right through.
- 1:55:06Good-ass pitch, right?
- 1:55:09That's the same number that our snooker was in about to be uniformed for from the 32.
- 1:55:14Looking up at the plate, right hand-header.
- 1:55:16Going in, drive, good play,
- 1:55:18Now down to the left side with his 3-2 pitch.
- 1:55:21Down at the whistle.
- 1:55:23And so it's coming on the hung of the center field.
- 1:55:25The pitcher's looking up into the fan out there, 3-2 chance for Willie.
- 1:55:28There's a basket catch to be tried to tie.
- 1:55:31There they go.
- 1:55:32Here in the first inning, the craving for three-up along.
- 1:55:34Takes up three runs.
- 1:55:35The justice thinks it's a hundred.
- 1:55:37That was the hit in the inning.
- 1:55:39There were two errors, and nobody was left behind.
- 1:55:42So the time now at the end of foul, full inning to play.
- 1:55:45What's going on at the World Series?
- 1:55:47It is the first in New York's giant seven.
- 1:55:51The Cleveland Indies three.
- 1:55:55The difference this time is the great man at the back.
- 1:55:59He's a great guy to know too, great.
- 1:56:01When asked in about 37 yards,
- 1:56:04if you make the world series this year, if you get the right, you feel right,
- 1:56:08you can forget about only those who've got the one thing to love.
- 1:56:12OK, now you've got a man up there.
- 1:56:18The official time attendance has just been announced here at the National Stadium.
- 1:56:2378,102.
- 1:56:2678,102 played here this afternoon.
- 1:56:30For the third game in the series, the attendance has reached 360,507.
- 1:56:38John Marcy comes in to fix for the Cleveland Indians now.
- 1:56:50John Marcy to Ricky LaCander.
- 1:56:53John Marcy from Redwood, Philly, California, 6195.
- 1:56:58As far as checking the missers is concerned,
- 1:57:01John Marcy has appeared in two ball games.
- 1:57:04He's got two innings.
- 1:57:05Two hits, check out one man.
- 1:57:10Coming up to the third half of the New York Giants, Reddy LaChan.
- 1:57:13It's a seven to four ball game.
- 1:57:15It goes suddenly, Cleveland exploded in the last half of their winning.
- 1:57:19That was two down, two errors were committed by the New York Giants,
- 1:57:23allowing two men to get on and then Hank Adeski came up to hit for an hour and a half.
- 1:57:26Let's go and crack a home run over the left field wall.
- 1:57:30Now Marcy's ready.
- 1:57:31Marcy had a lot to do since he's been in the Giants since like one.
- 1:57:38John Marcy, I'm here to fix you in the sixth inning.
- 1:57:42It's not his ball game as it now stands, but it could be.
- 1:57:52Marcy Reddy takes it down from here.
- 1:57:54He doesn't serve in the middle of the plate and LaChan pulls the bench down the first base line.
- 1:57:58Victor Chazak, that's his second up and goes to first base.
- 1:58:03Victor Chazak takes him on uniform block, goes to New York.
- 1:58:09And that's all for LaChan.
- 1:58:12A lot of times Reddy's led one down the first base line and did, but he missed a three-five.
- 1:58:16Well, we'll have one out here in the top of sixth inning and the batter coming up is Alvin Dard.
- 1:58:26Alvin Dard has had three base hits in three times, two things up to that field.
- 1:58:31Dives into a curve, doesn't often take to get over first strike.
- 1:58:37That's Alvin, one strike to come on Alvin Dard, one out, nobody on top of the sixth.
- 1:58:41Down side in front, seven to three and the Cleveland Indians literally battling here this afternoon.
- 1:58:45Not good mid of the curve and Dard's got to take that right here and go foul.
- 1:58:52We have a great minute here this afternoon, way back 11 years.
- 1:58:57As Jimmy Dudley told you, Hal Newhouser came on the set.
- 1:59:00Might remember very vividly saying Hal Newhouser wins two ball games and loses one against the Seville Cubs back in 1945.
- 1:59:08The road to delivery now to Alvin Dard.
- 1:59:10Swing on there to bounding ball, hit back the first base, put first up with it, races to first, first down first.
- 1:59:15And that's all for Alvin Dard.
- 1:59:16The two Giants fight to get here in the top half of inning number six.
- 1:59:2111 years ago, that's quite 11 years ago, I'm getting a little ahead of myself.
- 1:59:25Nine years ago, 1945 World Series.
- 1:59:30I've come up with the name of Bill Skater, very well known in the sports trade and the place of work in that World Series with Bill.
- 1:59:37He's a nice couple of years younger than J.B. Allen.
- 1:59:39I understand he's recuperating down in Florida and you can surely hope that he might be listening in today.
- 1:59:43John Mueller, old man, breaks up at the plate, swings on the first pitch,
- 1:59:46hit the plate, back to the nine, that's his cut across the first guess in time, and Mueller's out.
- 1:59:51Northbound eyelash.
- 1:59:55The Cleveland team is just working up here.
- 1:59:57The Giants are made down and order here.
- 1:59:59And a big turning by, Mueller without getting the ball out of the infield.
- 2:00:03That's nothing fast to Giants here, they have to take turning.
- 2:00:06And they're moving to basketball.
- 2:00:08Six, four at the end, about five and one half and the play remains.
- 2:00:13Two at seven, the Cleveland Indians three.
- 2:00:20Well, you know that attendance, that seven years past,
- 2:00:23could give us a record share to go to the ball players this year.
- 2:00:28We've found shares in the past year in the Flood World Series record books.
- 2:00:34Three million copies of last year's book were in the way to go around for Indians.
- 2:00:38Uh-huh.
- 2:00:39So has this year's edition moving out?
- 2:00:41It certainly is.
- 2:00:42That's because this year's records will get you a lot more fun, not a baseball.
- 2:00:47It has a score of every World Series game, winning hits, all-time records of every player,
- 2:00:52diagrams and dimensions and hitting ranges of every part,
- 2:00:56with your terror rosters and post-season scoring instructions,
- 2:00:59and you have up about everything.
- 2:01:01Five July FIFA Speedwriters set for just one dollar at a regular price.
- 2:01:05The bigger and better 1944 edition of the Flood World Series book
- 2:01:09will be a match in Jackson, South Carolina.
- 2:01:16The last half of the sixth inning, Bobby Avila.
- 2:01:19The captain's power of the bird series comes up to the plate here for the Cleveland Indians.
- 2:01:22And of course, anticipating that perhaps the Cleveland Indians have snapped out of their lethargy,
- 2:01:27the fans start the last half of the sixth inning with Bobby Avila coming up with a round of applause.
- 2:01:33Little tires the first six to Avila and gets it over to waste her third set.
- 2:01:37And there is over two this afternoon.
- 2:01:39She's super-focusing for the entire series.
- 2:01:42Two hits, but they're too not bad.
- 2:01:46Bobby batting right-handed, standing just off the plate.
- 2:01:49Holds up that way down to the nod.
- 2:01:51Little spins the pitch in, and the bill is slinged on,
- 2:01:53and there's a high-five ball hanging from the field.
- 2:01:55Willam-O's after he's left the front, it's great for it to come down, he's got it.
- 2:01:59There it is, out number one.
- 2:02:01Went out, the bottom of the sixth inning.
- 2:02:03The batter coming up to the plate is Larry Goebbich.
- 2:02:06Ron Kroesman here for a long time.
- 2:02:08He was known as the sense-buster.
- 2:02:10Kroesman here, let the home run, let the batter be back up and home run.
- 2:02:13He's going to start it in.
- 2:02:15So far in the series, Kroesman has had two very good hits.
- 2:02:21Four-thirteen times his back.
- 2:02:23Little Kroesman fast-balled through, and then picked up the knees on the right-side turnip,
- 2:02:26or called stretch.
- 2:02:28Kroesman has struck out a third with four-times, and he's lost twice.
- 2:02:34Larry Lovell got that off, left-hand hitter, turns it to the knees.
- 2:02:39Little Lovell's turn, puts it in line, there's a bounding ball hit,
- 2:02:42drive it around, little is off the field, tires to face, and baby is out.
- 2:02:47Well, the Indians, the three, have two men away here in the bottom of the sixth inning.
- 2:02:52The batter coming up is Rosen.
- 2:02:54Flip hasn't hit a ball out of the infield in two-times.
- 2:02:56That's the sustain out.
- 2:02:59In the second inning by second baseman, Baby Willam.
- 2:03:02And in the fourth inning he's just hard to drive by driving the third stop out and back.
- 2:03:10Rosen's trying to start a bad time, I think.
- 2:03:14Just got back to step in.
- 2:03:15Little throws up a big curve ball in the car, right off the peak of the tackle ball, then.
- 2:03:26Guess what? Guess what, then, here's what.
- 2:03:32There he is, over the giant in the fourth series, points the sign out for the living.
- 2:03:36Down is ready, goes over his head, six, throws the fast ball, and Rosen after sends in,
- 2:03:40help it on the third.
- 2:03:41Thompson's got it, fires over the first base, low end of the dote,
- 2:03:43why do you like them good with it, throws out number three.
- 2:03:46There, Rosen, down, drives out, round for the first,
- 2:03:49three-times the side, nothing in the car, super-cleaned in the last half of the sixth inning,
- 2:03:54and the fourth, he under-flicks, full in, and into play.
- 2:03:57There's New York seven and the Cleveland Indians three.
- 2:04:03Well, if the Indians could come back and take the base game,
- 2:04:05their all-time world series record will be 10-1 and 7-1 for a percentage of 5-88.
- 2:04:13So that is top-heavy record, who have won 71 and got 35 for a percentage of 6-70.
- 2:04:19Last time was left, Lord James Leckard, don't be scoffing at that now.
- 2:04:25Seven.
- 2:04:28The only number that's top of the seventh inning is going to be Mary Thompson Williams.
- 2:04:33Here he goes, back one, two, three, four, five, six, pitches.
- 2:04:36Six pitches in the last half of the sixth inning.
- 2:04:38By the way, that's the shortest women's world series so far.
- 2:04:43Six pitches.
- 2:04:47That's pretty quick. That's good when there are men in the hurry.
- 2:04:51Up to the plate now comes Willie May, the cap of the seventh inning is John Murphy.
- 2:04:54He goes back to work.
- 2:04:55Setting the Cleveland ball club for you defensively,
- 2:04:57John Murphy is on the down-tune, he can behind the plate.
- 2:05:00At first is Vic Wirtz,
- 2:05:02Fabio Villa at second,
- 2:05:03up short is Sam Zetti,
- 2:05:04at third is Al Roach,
- 2:05:06Al Smith in left field.
- 2:05:07Get the rest of them going in a moment.
- 2:05:08Murphy's third.
- 2:05:09Mays is up and over for his second.
- 2:05:12Willoughby is the center fielder for Cleveland.
- 2:05:13He likes his well-a-web play.
- 2:05:15It's a seven to three ball game.
- 2:05:17The Giants having seven runs on eight hits,
- 2:05:19the Indians three runs on two hits.
- 2:05:20Both sides are committed to errors.
- 2:05:22Murphy-Pickers, Mays takes outside and high for a ball one.
- 2:05:26One ball and one strike.
- 2:05:28Last half of the seventh inning.
- 2:05:35Mays shining inside against the plate.
- 2:05:37He drives straight ahead and he's got that time to the north.
- 2:05:40Mays has been blessed with that ball, as I expected he might have been.
- 2:05:43Willoughby's third.
- 2:05:45It's his family.
- 2:05:46Make sure he's outside for Murphy.
- 2:05:48Run the count to a one.
- 2:05:50He balls and one strike.
- 2:05:52The off field turns around the left for Willie Mays.
- 2:05:54Plays in deep.
- 2:05:57For quite a while during the regular season,
- 2:05:59he thought he had an opportunity of breaking the home run record.
- 2:06:04Set by their blue.
- 2:06:05Pitch to end.
- 2:06:06This time it's outside.
- 2:06:07Four, four, three, three and one.
- 2:06:11We're going to have a look at the number of runs in the match here.
- 2:06:13The player's share in this World Series will amount to $244,843.60.
- 2:06:21A three-one pitch to Willie Mays.
- 2:06:23Half ball.
- 2:06:24Willie Swinton bounces it down back a first base.
- 2:06:26Wirtz comes up with his steps on first and Willie Mays is out.
- 2:06:34So that's the first out.
- 2:06:37In the sixth inning, Rockman bounced down to Wirtz.
- 2:06:40And here in the seventh, Willie Mays bounced to it.
- 2:06:44So he's been a busy little fellow down that first base.
- 2:06:46Now hitting left-hander is Hank Thompson.
- 2:06:48One of the unsung heroes of this World Series.
- 2:06:52Great defensively.
- 2:06:54His storm is high up above the cap, right over the head for ball one.
- 2:06:58By the way, Thompson has walked seven times in this series,
- 2:07:01and if this series should end with this ball game,
- 2:07:04he will have set a record for the number of walks in a four-game series.
- 2:07:08Bases on both, record for four-game, six.
- 2:07:11Down the goal.
- 2:07:13There's another curve ball.
- 2:07:15This is Maddie the Moler.
- 2:07:17Thompson backed off from that one.
- 2:07:19He thought it was going to be way up there.
- 2:07:21Not too good.
- 2:07:22They curve up, but good.
- 2:07:26Dude, I wonder where first base.
- 2:07:28Down to one-one pitch on left-hander, batting constant.
- 2:07:30He runs up on it, spins it, and a fast ball, and doesn't get it.
- 2:07:32That's quite true.
- 2:07:35Very honest, he came in here yesterday, old hard nose, as Jimmy Dudley calls him.
- 2:07:40Really fired that rock.
- 2:07:42Today, Don Massey has come on, and he's been showing plenty of mastery with his catchers.
- 2:07:49The one-two delivery.
- 2:07:50Fast ball.
- 2:07:51Swung on, bounced down off the rubber for him.
- 2:07:52Played a bounding ball to Bobby Avila.
- 2:07:53He comes in, can't figure that pitch to ball away from him.
- 2:07:57And far from there, Thompson going to first to hold on.
- 2:08:00Right and low, alpha base hit.
- 2:08:01Bobby Avila coming in, tried to scoop it.
- 2:08:03It was one of those two-year-old players, and Bobby wasn't quite able to make it.
- 2:08:06It was always a base hit.
- 2:08:09Well, Thompson's on.
- 2:08:11That's the first pitch given up by Massey.
- 2:08:15That'll be hit number nine for the Giants.
- 2:08:25Down off the pitch to Monty Urban, with one out and one on.
- 2:08:28Massey checks his liners, delivers a big curve to the plate.
- 2:08:30Urban takes it outside and high for ball one.
- 2:08:36One ball, no strikes.
- 2:08:38One on, one out here in the top of the seventh.
- 2:08:40The Giants lead seven to three.
- 2:08:44Urban flails up back and forth, leans over the plate.
- 2:08:47Thompson leads it first.
- 2:08:49The fast ball is fired by Massey under the knees.
- 2:08:51That's ball two.
- 2:08:55The first world series, this guy Thompson, a third base, has been on 11 times.
- 2:09:00That's just about power for the course two.
- 2:09:04These big makes are here, loosening up down in the Cleveland Dope end.
- 2:09:08Yesterday's starter and losing pitcher.
- 2:09:10Massey delivers fast ball.
- 2:09:11Urban taps out at the hip, about to handle foul.
- 2:09:16Two balls, one strike.
- 2:09:18Top of the seventh inning, Giants leading the four runs, the score's 97-3.
- 2:09:22They're bidding to split this one in four.
- 2:09:30Andy Urban, who went until today, second inning before he got his first base hit in the series,
- 2:09:35and then he broke out with a double up there.
- 2:09:38Takes the fast ball up to the plate, that's ball three.
- 2:09:41Andy doubles to left corner field in the second inning,
- 2:09:44struck out in the third, and singled the left in the fifth.
- 2:09:47He's driven in two runs.
- 2:09:48That single belet in the fifth drove in two of the Giants' four runs in their big four runs this inning.
- 2:09:56Andy Urban, the world at number 20.
- 2:10:01Thompson steps away from first.
- 2:10:03Massey serves up the plate, and Urban taps out and hits the foul ball
- 2:10:06off to the right of the screen, and it's going back into the stretch here.
- 2:10:09He's out of the way.
- 2:10:11Over the collar, Andy Urban, it's three and two.
- 2:10:13Three balls and two strikes.
- 2:10:17Andy Urban, nine hits for the Giants.
- 2:10:19For the Cleveland Indians, three runs, two hits.
- 2:10:21One, a three-run home run by Hank Majewski.
- 2:10:23That was a pinch batter in the last half of the fifth inning.
- 2:10:28All through the Cleveland Runs, Andy and he were unearned,
- 2:10:31but nevertheless they're up on that score sheet for everyone to see.
- 2:10:34Massey's ready now.
- 2:10:35Go to three-two as he wants to make the pitch a song on.
- 2:10:37Hits down, Greener makes the nice shot, comes up to the court,
- 2:10:39and he's got a double play.
- 2:10:47Sam Denny, utility infielder, makes the pitch and look easy.
- 2:10:53The double play goes on the stretch that Sam Denny, who made a nice stop,
- 2:10:56over to Bobby Avila, who had the Phillips to be in a hurry to make the slowdown
- 2:10:59to first base, and he did.
- 2:11:01Thompson was caught on the front end of the double play.
- 2:11:03That's the race to side here in the top of the seventh inning.
- 2:11:06And that was the second double play the Indians had come up with.
- 2:11:08In the World Series, the runs one hit for the New York Giants in the top of the seventh inning.
- 2:11:14There were no errors, nobody was left on.
- 2:11:16And the score at the end, the prediction run happening to play now,
- 2:11:19it's New York seven, Cleveland three.
- 2:11:22Ladies and gentlemen, Gillette presents the sharpest edges ever honed.
- 2:11:28Every time you say to be a shot, and you off the ball just be a shot,
- 2:11:38Gillette's blue-grey for a quick-to-click in case of all.
- 2:11:44Gillette blue-grey for me to fit your razor to a piece.
- 2:11:50They're double-edged lines on the line for real economy, to love the shot.
- 2:11:56Every time you say to be a shot, and you on the ball just be a shot,
- 2:12:03you can't let you get all the quick-to-click in case of all.
- 2:12:11Gillette's blue-grey in modern defenses with used bench compartment,
- 2:12:14so 24.98 cents, 10.49 cents.
- 2:12:20Now to the last half of the seventh inning.
- 2:12:22West-hand hitter takes a throw from south far down middle,
- 2:12:26and it's loaded beneath for called strike one.
- 2:12:29Woods has done it for two hits.
- 2:12:33The Cleveland backs are picked up for tap in home.
- 2:12:35Both of them have been extra-base blow, exactly, ladies.
- 2:12:38Woods swings on the next pitch and he sends a foul right up over a microphone.
- 2:12:42That's strike two, and while we're getting the ball in play down,
- 2:12:45let's pause here ten seconds for station identification.
- 2:12:47This is Muriel, the radio network for all of America.
- 2:12:52WGM, the Chicago Tribune station, for the UniverWest.
- 2:13:01Right back to the diamond here at the Mississippi Stadium in Cleveland.
- 2:13:05The coach has one for two this afternoon, a double-edged right center.
- 2:13:08That's the end of the second inning.
- 2:13:09We fly the center in the first.
- 2:13:11Little works for another one, too.
- 2:13:12And throws the ball behind him, behind his head.
- 2:13:17Weston takes out the keeper from going through, and that's a one on Woods.
- 2:13:21Woods will be followed by one at west lake and then by Sean Dunning.
- 2:13:27Little push firing down there in the mound.
- 2:13:29Glovers will be in gray uniform, saturated.
- 2:13:33Little color gives you impressions of a little bull-legged.
- 2:13:39Coach takes time, slips back through, drives hands.
- 2:13:44Seven to three, end of the drive.
- 2:13:49Now a little skips and throws.
- 2:13:51Works, gets you the curve ball.
- 2:13:53That's a pretty high one off the floor of the ten.
- 2:13:55Ball through.
- 2:13:58Two balls, two strikes.
- 2:14:00Now it's half of the seventh inning.
- 2:14:02Bam, it's going short.
- 2:14:04No one knows when to go, the defendant's down there wearing those right home uniforms.
- 2:14:12The two-two pitch, an overhand curve to work the five of the letter.
- 2:14:17Around the ball pan, the lead rusher has left-hander Johnny Hanson, L.A.,
- 2:14:21who has won a ball game in this series, and points will help.
- 2:14:26He will lead to yesterday.
- 2:14:28Make one and ready in case Little should stumble here in the late stages.
- 2:14:33Ron Little from Montgomery, Illinois, ready to make his three-two pitch here to Vic Wirtz,
- 2:14:37the up-hander when you're born.
- 2:14:39In the drive, touch ball, swing on, jump out in the center field, left hand over the base hit.
- 2:14:43Works his arm.
- 2:14:49Works the line shot single into center field.
- 2:14:53That's here for Victor Wirtz.
- 2:14:55That's his eighth base hit.
- 2:14:58Eighth base hit, and 15 times up.
- 2:15:03This uphills batting percentage by dividing 15 into 8.0.
- 2:15:08You'll have it.
- 2:15:10One of us like coming up, he's over two.
- 2:15:13The Indians are trying to surge back a little.
- 2:15:18That's a third hit off Little.
- 2:15:23It's from the plate, the west lake is taken, and it's off the end. It's over for a strike.
- 2:15:31Up until today, Ron Little has pitched only one third of an inning in the World Series,
- 2:15:36which got him a relief.
- 2:15:38A couple of days back, over a total of rounds.
- 2:15:41That's his runner at first.
- 2:15:42The weather's a break.
- 2:15:43West lake takes the fast ball under the knees.
- 2:15:45That's ball one.
- 2:15:46One ball and one strike.
- 2:15:55West lake can be followed by Denny.
- 2:15:58Wirtz has opened his seventh with a single to center.
- 2:16:00He had authority. It was hit.
- 2:16:04West lake swings on the next pitch and trickles one out to the left of the plate foul.
- 2:16:08Two balls, two strikes on west lake.
- 2:16:21Little gets a new ball to work with.
- 2:16:23Looks around and checks his in-heel not to.
- 2:16:25Finds the out-heel, finds around the left.
- 2:16:27Going pretty deep for west lake.
- 2:16:29Hits up that long ball.
- 2:16:32A little power.
- 2:16:36Red bird's moving off the first base.
- 2:16:38In comes the pitch.
- 2:16:39West lake swings on the run-up third ball.
- 2:16:40There's the edit.
- 2:16:41That's that game.
- 2:16:46Strangely enough, Little has only two strikeouts for his credit here this afternoon.
- 2:16:51He's got Dobian first and he now has west lake here in the seventh.
- 2:16:55One out, one on for Cleveland.
- 2:16:57Last half, the seventh inning, and Sam Denty coming up to the plate.
- 2:17:01The ball is to two, slide out in the second inning through center field, and there's a base runner on the pitcher's yard in the fifth.
- 2:17:09Sam's chipping up on the hand with the bat, stands just off the plate and strikes.
- 2:17:13Turns it to me.
- 2:17:14Little turns him.
- 2:17:15There, it's over.
- 2:17:16Right under the letters on the outside plate.
- 2:17:18Right run.
- 2:17:25Nothing in one.
- 2:17:26A down on Sam Denty.
- 2:17:27Down on house of the seven, score seven to three in favor of New York over Cleveland.
- 2:17:33Little checks his runner.
- 2:17:34Works it first.
- 2:17:35Delivers the ball.
- 2:17:36Pitchers in there under the leaves, Denty, for a ball one.
- 2:17:39One ball and one strike.
- 2:17:42Delivered in, working around out of the man.
- 2:17:43Takes the work.
- 2:17:44Cuts the particularly sharp steps up on the rubber.
- 2:17:45Looks down at Denty.
- 2:17:47Works his nut being held down by Randy Loughnan.
- 2:17:50Raddy's cut way back in fielding that.
- 2:17:54Down on the stretch.
- 2:17:55Hits and throws.
- 2:17:56And a miss by Denty for track two.
- 2:17:59Finally, the monitor.
- 2:18:01Drops the drone at that low wind.
- 2:18:07Towers one and two on Denty.
- 2:18:13Out there to go next will be catcher Jim Heaton.
- 2:18:18Down at his nuts.
- 2:18:19Down he goes and jumps through pitch.
- 2:18:21Swing on there, he's going to try to hit out into the left field.
- 2:18:23And the monitor makes the grab and works hard to come back to first base.
- 2:18:27Denty hits the ball a while, but hits right where monitor Irwin.
- 2:18:30He's got his hands on it.
- 2:18:32So they have two outs in the last of the sevens.
- 2:18:33And Jim Heaton moving up to the plate.
- 2:18:36Jim started today, one for ten, hitting at 100.
- 2:18:40He had a double.
- 2:18:42Today he has lost them in the fifth and eighth base run-in.
- 2:18:47And an error committed by second baseman David Williams.
- 2:18:50So Heaton's 0 for 1 today.
- 2:18:521 for 11.
- 2:18:54Now he's trying to get to the plate right now.
- 2:19:07Little tries to pass the ball on him and he can't get back to the left field, so they hit.
- 2:19:12And second goes low to hold on.
- 2:19:14Not even comes up to that bound unless he even feels it in.
- 2:19:19And the Indians now have runners at 13 seconds.
- 2:19:24And sluggers have come up to the plate going massive.
- 2:19:27Let's see what our low-priced is going to do.
- 2:19:29He's got the best food down in the bowl pan, warmed up and ready, all heated.
- 2:19:34And it looks as though Rudy Regalado is coming up the bat.
- 2:19:38Here's the announcement.
- 2:19:40The match is 52 innings here this afternoon.
- 2:19:51He gets by giving up only one base hit.
- 2:19:53Rudy Regalado is coming up.
- 2:20:05This is just thinking a little bit ahead everybody, but if the Indians can do anything here,
- 2:20:08and this is all about tying it up or running perhaps in their trainings,
- 2:20:13Rick Ward for second base right now may get a second chance at the high-race record of 10 hits in four games.
- 2:20:19Jake right now has eight.
- 2:20:25Rick established that record back in 1928 in the World Series.
- 2:20:30Rudy Regalado batting for down-mess.
- 2:20:33They're hitting right-handed.
- 2:20:38And time is all.
- 2:20:39The good doctor was in there.
- 2:20:40Besides a little of second glass, he's taking too much time.
- 2:20:46Regalado has 0-0-0 over batting percentage if he takes the first pick high and tries to ball one.
- 2:20:59Tries to save him the first to second, two down, last half of the seventh.
- 2:21:03Seven to three in favor of the Giants.
- 2:21:05Steven making her base.
- 2:21:09And a 1-0 pick by Don Little.
- 2:21:11An overhand fastball taken on the outside corner, and a half-or-fifth.
- 2:21:21One ball, one strike on Pinchmutter Rudy Regalado.
- 2:21:26Woods ready to set Taylor second.
- 2:21:29Higgins ready to step out to first.
- 2:21:32Regalado leads over.
- 2:21:33Little comes in with a fastball.
- 2:21:35Tom, a good back-to-the-middle in the centerfield for a base hit.
- 2:21:38Woods coming around third.
- 2:21:39Willamette still goes to third.
- 2:21:40There goes Higgins into third.
- 2:21:43Taylor's a first-and-third in the run for.
- 2:22:01Now it's a seven-to-four ball game by Steven.
- 2:22:06And starting back, and Leo DeRosa calls for Tom and comes out with a giant dugout.
- 2:22:17Jim Higgins at third base.
- 2:22:19Rudy Regalado batting for Don Maffey.
- 2:22:21Singles back to the middle.
- 2:22:24And hardly coming out with a giant dugout and going down to the bullpen is right-hander Mark Berkham,
- 2:22:29who leads so magnificently in the first game of his World Series and picked up the win.
- 2:22:35It's a relief for Magley.
- 2:22:43I don't think there's another opportunity to lead Magley.
- 2:22:45And Leo DeRosa is going to call on Hope Wilhelm.
- 2:22:51Hope Wilhelm is coming on.
- 2:22:52He relieved here yesterday.
- 2:22:55And Hope Wilhelm is coming on to pitch here in the seventh inning.
- 2:22:58As John Wibble, who pitched magnificently up until the fifth,
- 2:23:02the ball game started to pop a little on him in the fifth inning.
- 2:23:06And Cleveland squared three runs after two hours.
- 2:23:09Two hours committed, allowed two men on, and Hank Magetsky came up to hit a three-run home run for the Cleveland Indians to get them back in the ball game.
- 2:23:16Then the eighth to the sixth inning was rather routine.
- 2:23:18And the seventh inning here, it has been trouble again for Don Little.
- 2:23:21So he goes out of there after having hit six and two third-anys of balls.
- 2:23:27He's given up four runs.
- 2:23:28He's given up four base hits.
- 2:23:29He's left one man stuck out two wild hits one time.
- 2:23:32But the two men on the bases right now are the responsibility of the now-departing Don Little of Mount Carmel, Illinois.
- 2:23:37There's a round of applause for him.
- 2:23:38He's picked a good ball game today.
- 2:23:44I'm going to go to the third inning.
- 2:24:04Hank Wilhelm coming on to make his second appearance in the 1964 World Series.
- 2:24:09They came on in yesterday's ball game after Gomez had gone seven and one third innings and finished it out.
- 2:24:15New York winning the ball game 62.
- 2:24:17Now it's Wilhelm coming on to try to stay vigilant for the drive and for the starting 50-pound middle.
- 2:24:23And it looks as though he's going to come up and do a little batting here for the Cleveland Indians.
- 2:24:27Here's Dr. Smith.
- 2:24:28There he is home.
- 2:24:38Joe Schoepf, a left-hand hitter, coming on the back for Al Smith, a right-hander.
- 2:24:42Schoepf may stay in the ball game to play out in left field or he may have a realignment of the outfield position for Cleveland.
- 2:24:50Well, let's see.
- 2:24:51It's a seven-four ball game.
- 2:24:52And the guy stepping up to the tape, Schoepf, represents the tying run for Cleveland.
- 2:24:57Higgin is up first.
- 2:24:59Regalado, who singles back through the middle to drive in the run, is in charge at first.
- 2:25:03A pretty good runner.
- 2:25:05Well, this is a left-hander, Joe Schoepf is coming up now.
- 2:25:08Let's see what happens with him with two down and two on.
- 2:25:11Last half for the seventh inning.
- 2:25:12Cleveland making their move in the seventh, trying to do the same thing they did in the fourth inning.
- 2:25:21The reason for Schoepf being sent in this spring, Joe Schoepf looks like Wilhelm pretty well in the spring exhibition game.
- 2:25:28Jimmy Dudley rubs his pants together.
- 2:25:30He's on his home ground here.
- 2:25:32Let's see what folks are going to do, and I know there are thousands of crazy fans going to fans.
- 2:25:36That was a giant fan call over the country.
- 2:25:38They have their fingers crossed right now.
- 2:25:40Well, let's see what happens with Higgin Wilhelm with relief.
- 2:25:42Down little.
- 2:25:43The knuckleball and right-hander gets up.
- 2:25:45Shecksey is the runner at first and second.
- 2:25:47Look down at folks at the pinch battle.
- 2:25:48Delivered to him, the knuckle.
- 2:25:49And looks outside, way outside.
- 2:25:50And that's him.
- 2:25:52Almost had the ball get away from him.
- 2:25:54And he's got a pretty tense situation here in the last half of seventh inning.
- 2:26:06And that's Wilhelm, the left-hander, and that's Schoepf.
- 2:26:26Third time, it's gone.
- 2:26:27While a ball is retrieved out on the right field, it's got away from the ball point crew working for Cleveland.
- 2:26:31That's him still throwing down there for Cleveland.
- 2:26:36There will be heat coming on here for Cleveland in the top of the eighth inning.
- 2:26:40Wilhelm with runners at first and third.
- 2:26:42Second is open.
- 2:26:43Delivered to folks, the knuckleball.
- 2:26:45Punched by up to the left-handed fan.
- 2:26:47Comes down those pins and the ball catch him loose.
- 2:26:51Two balls, one strike on folks.
- 2:26:53He tried to hold up on it.
- 2:26:54Swung that down, but it went too far around.
- 2:26:56Wilhelm with the wind.
- 2:27:01Two balls, one strike.
- 2:27:02Wilhelm below number 49, a big flip arising bag.
- 2:27:07A serious take, young fellow, steps up.
- 2:27:09Makes his start, checks his runners.
- 2:27:10He can step that up for him.
- 2:27:13Regalado out first.
- 2:27:14Down comes the pitcher, knuckleball, swung on.
- 2:27:16Again, punch foul.
- 2:27:17Richmond out for his third base line, way back into the second tier on the play.
- 2:27:21A hard ride for two balls and two strikes on Dave Pope.
- 2:27:24A good starting for Al Smith, the leadoff man, the president.
- 2:27:29Regalado batted for Massey and hammered a run in by ripping his finger right back through the middle.
- 2:27:37Oh, there it was.
- 2:27:38Gave up four runs and five hits.
- 2:27:39He's responsible for the two men on right now.
- 2:27:42Wilhelm trying to send the tie.
- 2:27:45Get out the far.
- 2:27:48Two to six now, a very quick left-handed hitter.
- 2:27:52Here's the knuckleball, swung on and punched foul again.
- 2:27:54Looking down the left-hander line.
- 2:27:56That goes into the tie-down play.
- 2:27:59That saves the two and twos.
- 2:28:00Wilhelm puts the tie on the match.
- 2:28:01He's giving Wilhelm a workout.
- 2:28:22Now away to the yard again.
- 2:28:23It's a good time, stocking battered box.
- 2:28:25Wilhelm, that's his winner.
- 2:28:26Goes to the top of the stretch.
- 2:28:27Comes down, has a take, kicks and blows.
- 2:28:29Knuckleball, swung on, he goes back to the yard.
- 2:28:32Wilhelm has a par space base for Roddy Rockman.
- 2:28:35Focus out on the enemy hook.
- 2:28:38So Wilhelm comes on here to get the last shot for Gordon Dunning.
- 2:28:42The Indians body back, picking up one run.
- 2:28:46On three base hits.
- 2:28:47There were no errors and two men were left behind.
- 2:28:51He's got the score here at the end of seven full innings of play.
- 2:28:55Now they know that Giants seven and the Cleveland Indians four.
- 2:29:02That's right.
- 2:29:03Cleveland's doing these two teams a lot of hammer and tongs.
- 2:29:07They're at Minnesota Stadium.
- 2:29:09Seven or eight thousand, a hundred and two folks have come in here to see the excitement we've been telling you about.
- 2:29:14And Cleveland Stadium here is one of the two perfectly proportioned ball stocks in the majors.
- 2:29:19Quite a few of them here.
- 2:29:21In the Third World Series record book, you see that a home run has to travel just as far and just as high to clear any fence in right field or right center as one in a comfortable direction in left field or left center.
- 2:29:34And there's a many people saying that that should be in all ball stocks.
- 2:29:38And if that be true, then the record should be much more even.
- 2:29:42Ball law there has been a great move in that direction.
- 2:29:46The ball stock here is a very fine one.
- 2:29:48The ball stock is at Chicago.
- 2:29:51The one down in Baltimore is going to be a ball stock that will have dimensions.
- 2:29:55That is just about the trend.
- 2:29:59Now, Gauffer has won the left field at the
- 2:30:03and Gauffer has been on the pitch for the Cleveland Indians here in the eighth inning.
- 2:30:05So Gauffer on the mound.
- 2:30:08Gauffer the right-hander.
- 2:30:10Lost yesterday's ball game so he's also won.
- 2:30:14No win, one loss.
- 2:30:15Won the World Series up until now.
- 2:30:17So Gauffer comes on and Dane Polk remains out in left field.
- 2:30:20Being on the back of Smith.
- 2:30:23And the first man to come up here in the eighth inning for the New York Giants will be Dave Williams.
- 2:30:34So moving to the top of the eighth inning with the Giants leading 74.
- 2:30:37They left seven runs on nine hits.
- 2:30:39That's committed two errors.
- 2:30:41The Cleveland Indians four runs on five hits and they're up also two errors.
- 2:30:48Dave Williams still looking for his first World Series base hit to go for 11.
- 2:30:53Such a far successfully his last time out that was his fifth inning.
- 2:30:57Comes on the right-hander's batter from Dallas.
- 2:30:59Brings back from Bursfield fastball and takes it off the hips and sides to ball one.
- 2:31:09Bursfield going around the trade with the big ball.
- 2:31:13Picks and throws another fastball.
- 2:31:14Williams cuts the foul off to the right of the plate.
- 2:31:18Goes way back up into the second tier.
- 2:31:21One ball and one strike.
- 2:31:25That's a very number eight.
- 2:31:26Giants having a front for three runs.
- 2:31:28Trying to wind us up.
- 2:31:31That's a very close and overhand curve at the end there for strikes and the count is one and two on Williams.
- 2:31:35One ball and two strikes.
- 2:31:38What's going to come back to go next?
- 2:31:40It's going to be the pitcher Wilhelm.
- 2:31:48First thing with fouls.
- 2:31:49Got your curve in there low.
- 2:31:50That's ball three.
- 2:32:01That's air pumps.
- 2:32:02Picks.
- 2:32:03Throw a sweet tour.
- 2:32:04Fastball inside off the knees.
- 2:32:06That's a back six ball three.
- 2:32:09That's first count on Williams with three balls and two strikes.
- 2:32:13That's going to be a training, the first run up for the Giants.
- 2:32:16Bursfield falling away out there at the end there.
- 2:32:19Six counts.
- 2:32:20Egan.
- 2:32:22Three two pitches to plate.
- 2:32:23Overhand curve.
- 2:32:24Come on by Williams.
- 2:32:25There's a long drive deep in the left field.
- 2:32:26It's curving and it goes foul into the seat.
- 2:32:29That's Mrs. Dana home run for Davy Williams.
- 2:32:32She tagged that ball pretty well.
- 2:32:36That's about as close as he'll ever come to making a home run and that's actually getting it.
- 2:32:40You can see the kid's shoulder sort of sag when that ball first foul down at the 320 foot line.
- 2:32:46Davy hasn't hit too many home runs this year.
- 2:32:48Actually he's battled that stick all year long.
- 2:32:51His batting percentage hasn't been anywhere near where he or the Giants think it should be.
- 2:32:56But he's been really stuck to it all year long.
- 2:32:59He's shot in the arm for the kid had that ball gone in.
- 2:33:02Didn't quite make it.
- 2:33:05Three two pitch drive.
- 2:33:06I got to see an overhand fastball taken by Williams.
- 2:33:08Blowing foul at the ball four.
- 2:33:10Ball Williams gets some compensation by drawing the off.
- 2:33:13Out front here the first base on balls.
- 2:33:16First base on balls given up here.
- 2:33:18And through the knee outside.
- 2:33:20And Weston comes off.
- 2:33:22He's going to pass the pass right field in the second inning.
- 2:33:25He's got his batting in the run.
- 2:33:26He's stuck out in the fourth.
- 2:33:28Passed by the right field in the fifth.
- 2:33:30He's driving his second run.
- 2:33:31Well he's driven in a pair today.
- 2:33:33And has gone 0-1 action.
- 2:33:36Stuck out in the fourth inning.
- 2:33:38Weston can give that ball for the right too.
- 2:33:41Minnesota ball so glad about his bat.
- 2:33:44Right there.
- 2:33:45Firestorm and expecting the bunt.
- 2:33:47The infield comes charging in.
- 2:33:49It's the Giants running.
- 2:33:50It's too close up against the uniforms now.
- 2:33:52It's a fastball run.
- 2:33:57He's got a jet up overhead here.
- 2:33:59He's really going through a lot of tricks and tactics.
- 2:34:05All set.
- 2:34:06Weston scores off the bunt.
- 2:34:07Both puts the bunt down the first base now.
- 2:34:09And Wirtz plays it.
- 2:34:10His only play is back to Avila covering at first base.
- 2:34:12And Williams has to pass the pass down the second.
- 2:34:15So Weston runs and takes the pass to the second.
- 2:34:18Wirtz handling.
- 2:34:19Avila taking it at first base.
- 2:34:22So it's a 3-4 put out if you're scoring with it.
- 2:34:25Williams runs for his position second and the batter coming up is quite well held.
- 2:34:29Up ahead first at bat.
- 2:34:30He came in and pitched one third of the seventh inning.
- 2:34:36But moving up to the plate.
- 2:34:37He's not a great shaker to the batsman.
- 2:34:40And a friend wave at him anyway.
- 2:34:46If you're looking into the last half of the eighth inning and would like to know who's coming up for Cleveland,
- 2:34:50it'll be Avila, Joby, and Williams.
- 2:34:53If you're looking at that order, anybody else neither, it'll be a bit worse.
- 2:34:57I know many times putting in the ballpark folks like to look at the programs
- 2:35:01and see who's going to come up the next inning.
- 2:35:04Now they're ready.
- 2:35:05So it's the real home of the Coons on the first pitch and dribbles it foul.
- 2:35:08Off to the left of the plate, beat me down in the ground.
- 2:35:10That's the second.
- 2:35:15Seven runs, nine hits.
- 2:35:16Good job.
- 2:35:24Down the set.
- 2:35:25Garcia overhands the pick.
- 2:35:27Pass ball.
- 2:35:28Fires with the knee to Wilhelm for a strike.
- 2:35:30That's the second one.
- 2:35:31Down they're going two.
- 2:35:34Garcia checks his runner back at second.
- 2:35:36Delivers the plate.
- 2:35:37Puts a swing on the Wilhelm and misses.
- 2:35:39That's the pass ball.
- 2:35:41Wilhelm goes down striking out for Garcia.
- 2:35:43That's the second out here in the inning.
- 2:35:45Garcia has walked him in, struck him out out.
- 2:35:49About to coming up is Whitey Lachman hitting left handed.
- 2:35:53Starting to flip batting around for New York.
- 2:35:56Whitey hasn't hit a ball out of the infield today.
- 2:35:58He's called out on strikes in the first inning, tapped back to Wurtz in the third
- 2:36:01and was thrown out to the pitcher covering.
- 2:36:03And with the reverse when he came up in the fourth inning,
- 2:36:05he hit a smash back to the mound and was thrown out by the pitcher.
- 2:36:09And in the sixth inning, rolled to Victor Wurtz for the first out of the sixth.
- 2:36:13Whitey choking up on the bat handle, steps in.
- 2:36:17Garcia checks Williams back at second.
- 2:36:19Big ball chested right handed delivers.
- 2:36:21There's a curve inside and low.
- 2:36:23Right into the dirt.
- 2:36:24Higgin comes up with a nice hit.
- 2:36:25That's ball one.
- 2:36:28The most sacrifice hits in a game held by Joe Pinker of Chicago,
- 2:36:31but actually 1906.
- 2:36:34And West Western is credited with three here this afternoon.
- 2:36:38Two sacrifice flies to right hander sacrifice.
- 2:36:42So I imagine that that will tie it up right.
- 2:36:45The pitch to Whitey Lachman is over but low and this time it's two balls, no strikes.
- 2:36:52Of course you know the sacrifice fly just came back into existence.
- 2:36:56And it has to be figured along I would imagine with the tabulation of a sacrifice.
- 2:37:01So Western has three.
- 2:37:02That will tie Pinker.
- 2:37:05Overhand pitch is swung around by Lachman and hits foul.
- 2:37:07Off to the left of the plate.
- 2:37:09Up into the second here out of goal.
- 2:37:10Somebody humble that one and drops it back down to the lower deck.
- 2:37:24Two ball one strike counter Lachman.
- 2:37:26Two down.
- 2:37:27Baby Williams still at second.
- 2:37:31In comes the pitch.
- 2:37:33Lachman takes it low.
- 2:37:34That's ball three, three and one.
- 2:37:43Williams driving away from second now waiting for Garcia to wheel that next pitch up to Lachman.
- 2:37:53Garcia settles.
- 2:37:55Looks at his runner and delivers the plate and overhand curve.
- 2:37:57Lachman swings on it.
- 2:37:58Hits a high fly ball to deep right field.
- 2:38:00Wally Westlake back on the center track.
- 2:38:08That's all here in the eighth inning for the Giants.
- 2:38:09No runs, no hits.
- 2:38:10No Cleveland errors.
- 2:38:11One man, the sixth man, in the front of the Giants and going about eight times.
- 2:38:16Throw the score at the end.
- 2:38:18About seven and one half innings of play.
- 2:38:20It's New York seven and Cleveland four.
- 2:38:24Well, only one way to get crisp invigorating shaves that look fresh and feel that way too is with shaving cream and a Gillette razor.
- 2:38:33Now that's why nine million Gillette razors were brought last year in these United States alone.
- 2:38:38Just think of it.
- 2:38:39That means one for every six men who shave.
- 2:38:42Enough for the million or more young men who begin shaving each year.
- 2:38:46Plus the men who discard other razors that don't give the comfort and convenience of the modern Gillette superstition.
- 2:38:52To pick you up and make you look on top, you can't match a Gillette shave.
- 2:38:56Buy a one-piece Gillette super speed razor that shaves so easily, changes blades so quickly, and comes simply by rinsing.
- 2:39:03Complete with blue blade dispenser and styrene travel case, it's one dollar.
- 2:39:07And hold everything.
- 2:39:09With it, you'll get the new Gillette World Series Record Book, free.
- 2:39:16Now to the last half of any number eight here in Cleveland. Has a total of just six more hours remaining.
- 2:39:23We'll do something about free run deficit.
- 2:39:26As we told you, the last half of the eighth inning, we'll find Bobby Avila, Larry Doby, and Al Rosen coming up in that order.
- 2:39:33But Wilhelm has his work cut out for him. At least a whole list of them.
- 2:39:38And a round of applause for Bobby Avila as he steps up to the plate.
- 2:39:41A coaxer Cleveland trying to get something started and cooked up.
- 2:39:45Wilhelm, the knuckleballer delivers, and there is that knuckle. It's high inside to Avila, for ball one.
- 2:40:00Wilhelm ready, delivers again, Avila takes. There's the fastball.
- 2:40:03Down across at the waist, first ball strike.
- 2:40:06And the wind kicking up now from behind left center for you, blowing right across the diamond out behind first.
- 2:40:12So to poke it into that breeze, you're going to have to hit the ball pretty stiffly.
- 2:40:18Bobby Avila holds it free this afternoon. Wilhelm delivers, there's the knuckle.
- 2:40:21Avila runs up, knocks the ball, takes the fix, and it's in there anyway.
- 2:40:24Strike two.
- 2:40:27Run ball, two strikes on Avila.
- 2:40:29Doby on deck to follow.
- 2:40:34Aggress and down in the bullpen, along with Johnny Antonelli going for the chance in case Wilhelm should have trouble.
- 2:40:40White pitchers one and two.
- 2:40:42Curveball, it's one-one, and this is just away from West Western.
- 2:40:45He comes back to the screen, picks up, and throws.
- 2:40:48The first base for the Blue Lanes there.
- 2:40:53There's the first, a brilliant, on-the-wire one.
- 2:40:56On the first strike.
- 2:40:58And of course, it's going to be charged to the pitcher.
- 2:41:02Avila will be charged to the pitcher for throwing that one wide.
- 2:41:19So, hook well out, a charge with the error.
- 2:41:22Throwing that one wide, way back to the screen.
- 2:41:25Western couldn't hold it.
- 2:41:26On strike three.
- 2:41:30Avila went down the post.
- 2:41:33Up the plate is Goebb, he takes the first pitch in there for a strike.
- 2:41:37So, Avila.
- 2:41:41Goes on on first base.
- 2:41:48Well, that's the end of all game, and the way to get on.
- 2:41:51There, Doby up there, is a round of the cross.
- 2:41:53The woodland clapping starts to the stands here.
- 2:41:56Wilhelm checks his runner at first, Bobby Avila.
- 2:41:59Throw to the plate.
- 2:42:01A knuckle that's outside.
- 2:42:02As Doby starts to go and changes his mind.
- 2:42:05One ball and one strike to count on the eye of Doby.
- 2:42:16One ball, one strike to count on Doby.
- 2:42:20Wilhelm in trouble, by his own making.
- 2:42:23Delivers a knuckle, or Doby takes it low into the dirt.
- 2:42:26That's ball two.
- 2:42:27Two balls and one strike.
- 2:42:37The Giants have seen here this afternoon their 7-0 lead.
- 2:42:40Lindelbauer now to a three run lead at 7-4.
- 2:42:45Wilhelm on here in trouble in the eighth inning.
- 2:42:48Avila at first.
- 2:42:51Doby is on.
- 2:42:57That's your on.
- 2:42:58That's the plate.
- 2:42:59Takes the pitch outside.
- 2:43:00That's ball three.
- 2:43:01Two balls, one strike on Doby.
- 2:43:03On the ball pan is Wiccan and Johnny Atamela going hard.
- 2:43:06Johnny ready for the Giants.
- 2:43:11Now one thing about it, these Indians haven't given up here this afternoon.
- 2:43:14No battling.
- 2:43:18Wilhelm ready for the three one pitch.
- 2:43:20That's the ball two.
- 2:43:24So instead of his knuckle, Wilhelm came in with his fast ball.
- 2:43:31There it is, down on Doby.
- 2:43:39Avila steps away from first base.
- 2:43:41Will he be running three to eight?
- 2:43:42Does not.
- 2:43:43That's a swing arm.
- 2:43:44There's a half-foul ball after third base time.
- 2:43:45Thompson's going to get this one that's over behind the dugout, out of play.
- 2:43:52Avila playing it safely down there, first base.
- 2:44:00Now for the next three-two pitch on Larry Doby, the center fielder.
- 2:44:03Avila on.
- 2:44:08That's out of course.
- 2:44:09Doby waits.
- 2:44:11Wilhelm delivers.
- 2:44:12There goes the other little pitchers.
- 2:44:13Here we go.
- 2:44:15That's one to rip right through the broadcasting booth.
- 2:44:17Didn't hit you did it, Jimmy.
- 2:44:19How about you?
- 2:44:20Scared you all right?
- 2:44:21Okay fellas.
- 2:44:22I thought you would hit somebody.
- 2:44:24Ripped right through the broadcasting booth.
- 2:44:28Almost hit our start of session.
- 2:44:30Frank Zuzalo in the face.
- 2:44:36Three-two pitch now, coming up, Larry Doby.
- 2:44:41Wilhelm ready, checks his runner.
- 2:44:43Throws over, first base.
- 2:44:44Keep Avila close.
- 2:44:46Robbie was well enough on that last three-two delivery.
- 2:44:51So was the crew up here in the broadcasting booth running.
- 2:44:54The pitch, the other break, pitch swing arm there.
- 2:44:56The line's out deep in the center field.
- 2:44:57William Mays back is under.
- 2:44:58It makes his throw all the way to first base.
- 2:45:00And Avila has to hurry back.
- 2:45:03Well Doby lines up.
- 2:45:04William Mays in center.
- 2:45:05We're at number one here in the eighth inning.
- 2:45:08Still have a base runner.
- 2:45:12Spongum really got us slowly now.
- 2:45:15Just a little under two and a half hours old.
- 2:45:17You know they passed the series game in history.
- 2:45:20It was played with the Tigers and the Cubs back in 1908.
- 2:45:24It lasted just an hour and 25 minutes.
- 2:45:27With teams records like this, as well as all the important individual series records,
- 2:45:31a handy source I know is, well, that's where I got this one.
- 2:45:35In the threat world series record book.
- 2:45:42Now we're home ready.
- 2:45:44Breshtove, Flip Rosen.
- 2:45:47He does the right hand hitter takes a curve inside under the chin for ball one.
- 2:45:53Now Rosen, who hasn't caught the ball out of the injury on the side,
- 2:45:55he's gone over three.
- 2:45:57Runner first, one out, last half of the eighth.
- 2:46:00Seven to four in favor of New York.
- 2:46:02Knuckleball swung on the roads.
- 2:46:03Rosen hammered him to let center field.
- 2:46:05Bobby Avila, fast second.
- 2:46:07He's on his way.
- 2:46:08Coming in the third.
- 2:46:09Willie Mays, up the ball, throws in.
- 2:46:10Avila slides, he's safe at third.
- 2:46:11Rosen, that's a win.
- 2:46:31Leo DeRosa coming out of a giant dugout now.
- 2:46:34Out the box to Holtwell Hell.
- 2:46:39Right has ran to a snag here in the last half of the eighth inning.
- 2:46:43The Indians have runners at first and third.
- 2:46:45Second is open, one out.
- 2:46:47Nick Wirtz is scheduled to beat about her,
- 2:46:49and Leo DeRosa says let me go out there and talk to my pitcher.
- 2:46:52Down the bullpen, it's Gwysum and Antonelli, both warmed and ready.
- 2:46:56Should DeRosa need either one of them.
- 2:46:58And I think he's going to bring in Jeremy Antonelli.
- 2:47:00Yep, here he comes.
- 2:47:01Johnny Antonelli is going to be called upon as the fireman here this afternoon.
- 2:47:05So Wilhelm pitched one third of the seventh inning, pitched one third of the eighth inning.
- 2:47:08He's pitched two thirds of the inning.
- 2:47:13And coming on will be Johnny Antonelli.
- 2:47:23Johnny Antonelli has won one ball game.
- 2:47:26And the series, Johnny Young called up on Massachusetts, came called on again.
- 2:47:32Antonelli in winning his ball game for New York,
- 2:47:36the second game of the series that was back in the 30th of September.
- 2:47:39The league concludes in Indians 3-1.
- 2:47:42He gave them eight base hits.
- 2:47:47They stranded 13 men on that afternoon.
- 2:47:52Johnny Antonelli comes on in the lead.
- 2:47:59That's the business is picking up in the Wigwall.
- 2:48:03Antonelli comes on, hits the works.
- 2:48:06Take Wilhelm out of the ball game.
- 2:48:11Johnny Antonelli relieves him.
- 2:48:13He's a fair kicker to the viewers by DeRosa.
- 2:48:20He's drawing a few warm-up pitches down in the mound now.
- 2:48:22What a number 43.
- 2:48:24It's quite a lot of difference.
- 2:48:25Johnny Antonelli's a fastball pitcher.
- 2:48:27He's got a good curve and a good slider.
- 2:48:29Weston and Fernando are catching the knuckleballs to put Wilhelm out.
- 2:48:33Well, Jimmy Dudley, you said before this ball game started that we can expect a lot of fireworks.
- 2:48:39I guess you're absolutely right.
- 2:48:41Before I have to really pass away here to the courts, let's pause ten seconds for placement identification.
- 2:48:56This is Mirage World, the radio network for all America.
- 2:48:59This is WGN, your exclusive World Series station in Chicago.
- 2:49:12Ripworth's standing just outside of better spots.
- 2:49:14Well, Antonelli goes his warm-up pitches, gets field to my arm.
- 2:49:21Things are sort of broken loose here for Cleveland in the fifth and the seventh.
- 2:49:24They scored three times in the fifth, once in the seventh, and they're bidding here to score again in the eighth.
- 2:49:29Ripworth's coming up.
- 2:49:30There's one home run for the Cleveland Indians in this series.
- 2:49:33The series would say a pick-up three.
- 2:49:38Now, with anticipation, the fans are beginning to give applause for Victor Wirtz.
- 2:49:43He represents a tying run for Cleveland.
- 2:49:49I was on the first. I'll be available at third with one out and second open.
- 2:49:56Four is seven to four and play for the Giants.
- 2:49:59The Indians make it come right down to the wire.
- 2:50:06Wirtz has eight base hits in this series.
- 2:50:08He can get his length right now.
- 2:50:11Ten is a record of base hits in a four-game series.
- 2:50:16Of course, this would go more than four now.
- 2:50:20Down comes the pitch to Wirtz, the fastball off the shoulder inside.
- 2:50:27Come down those strikes on Wirtz.
- 2:50:29Wirtz has three runs batted in.
- 2:50:31Majestie has three runs batted in.
- 2:50:34So they're tied in the RBI department in this series for Cleveland.
- 2:50:39Anthony ready. Wirtz back and deals off the fastball.
- 2:50:46One dollar, one strike as Anthony goes for the fastball.
- 2:50:52Now we've got John McCall, the left-hander in the bullpen, and Mark Grissom, the right-hander for the Giants.
- 2:50:58That is the first and third to Cleveland here in the last of the eighth.
- 2:51:00One out.
- 2:51:01Big word's up there.
- 2:51:02This afternoon he's two to three, double and a single.
- 2:51:05The curveball to him is overnice with the waste of his time.
- 2:51:09A half-dollar chip.
- 2:51:11He's good all the time and put in the change-up curve.
- 2:51:15One ball and two strikes.
- 2:51:19Also, this is going to be one wheeler, remember.
- 2:51:23Show us which way the cat jumps in this one.
- 2:51:28Lots of ball games in this series.
- 2:51:30That's really been exciting.
- 2:51:33Ratnello sets, delivers. It's a big curveball.
- 2:51:36We'll see the misses.
- 2:51:37Ball strike three.
- 2:51:39That's the big out.
- 2:51:41Ratnello comes on, strikeout Victor Wirtz.
- 2:51:44That's the third strikeout against Cleveland.
- 2:51:46The batter coming up now is Wally Wesley.
- 2:51:56Wilson steps out in front of the plate and shots words of encouragement to John Ratnello.
- 2:52:01Ratnello standing at third base, ready to step out now.
- 2:52:04Wally Loppen goes back to his steaming depth and allows Al Rosen to take his lead at first.
- 2:52:12And now he settles down in the position, checks his runners.
- 2:52:15Here's the pitch into the plate and Westlake takes it low and outside for ball one.
- 2:52:21Last half of the opening, Cleveland, two men on, two down.
- 2:52:25Score seven to four in favor of the New York Giants.
- 2:52:29They're trying to sweep this series in four.
- 2:52:33Ratnello sets, kicks, throws a lot of curveball, slam foul down the third baseline.
- 2:52:39Westlake scops, one ball and one strike.
- 2:52:51Westlake, a big right hand hitter, feet wide spread apart.
- 2:52:54Stands about three quarters deep at the plate.
- 2:52:59Pretty much close up on it.
- 2:53:02Ratnello asks Westlake for the sign again and gets it.
- 2:53:07Avila taking a slight lead at third.
- 2:53:09Now Linton's at lead.
- 2:53:11Rosen is first.
- 2:53:12Ratnello pitches fastball, swung on and hit foul.
- 2:53:17Goes right back into the stands.
- 2:53:22Down on Westlake is the ball and two strikes.
- 2:53:26Score seven to four in favor of the Giants.
- 2:53:35Seventy-eight thousand, a hundred and two pair of eyes looking on here this afternoon.
- 2:53:41Waiting to see what Johnny Abnall is going to do.
- 2:53:44Waiting to see what Wally Westlake is going to do.
- 2:53:47Johnny checks his runners, delivers one and two.
- 2:53:50A curve over for 12-strike three.
- 2:53:53That had Westlake all tied up.
- 2:53:55So Westlake is calling out on strikes.
- 2:53:57After five to five here in the eighth, no runs.
- 2:54:00There was one base hit, there was one error, there were two men left off.
- 2:54:05So the score at the end of eight, four, and these are playing now.
- 2:54:07It's New York seven and Cleveland four.
- 2:54:13Do you show? Do you show? Do you show?
- 2:54:24Look sharp, feel sharp, be sharp and listen, this is how I do it.
- 2:54:30Oh, Blade, do you have bladings? How are you big?
- 2:54:33Oh, Blade, you better check. Please make sure you have enough.
- 2:54:38Cause a worn out blade makes shaving mighty tough.
- 2:54:43How are you big? Oh, Blade, you better look. You'll look too great with me.
- 2:54:52It's to the top of the ninth inning.
- 2:54:54And the first man up for the Giants will be Al Bindar.
- 2:54:57We'll have Mueller and then Mays following it in that order.
- 2:55:00Well, just a minute ago, we were talking with Jimmy Dudley.
- 2:55:04And we're asking him some questions about what he could expect in the last portion of the ballgame.
- 2:55:09Did he expect fireworks? And what did Jimmy Dudley tell us?
- 2:55:13Well, Big Al, I thought you had it there for a while.
- 2:55:15Those fireworks were in the making, but all of a sudden that Antonelli came on.
- 2:55:19And you know something? He did today just what he did the other day.
- 2:55:22Against the Indians, he had two men to stop in the lineup.
- 2:55:25Those two men were Dobie and Wirtz, the two tough, long ball-hitting left-handers.
- 2:55:30And he turned in the trick again today.
- 2:55:32And yet, as so many people have said all over the world, they're probably still saying,
- 2:55:36the ballgame is never over until the last man is out.
- 2:55:39And there's three more outs to go for both teams.
- 2:55:42Well, that's right, Jim. And the Giants are sending up now in the ninth inning Al Bindar,
- 2:55:47John Mueller, and Willie Mays, and if anyone else has made a touch.
- 2:55:51Al Bindar has had two for four here this afternoon, two singles for left field.
- 2:55:54And he's facing Mike Garcia.
- 2:55:57Yesterday he got a single off Mike in the third inning at the left center field.
- 2:56:01One for two off Mike yesterday.
- 2:56:04See how he fares today with the big right-hander.
- 2:56:07Michael came on in relief in the ballgame.
- 2:56:11Comes down with first pitch and it's swung on.
- 2:56:14There's a long drive into center field. Good for a base hit.
- 2:56:17O'Dark is on.
- 2:56:19This is Alvin Dark's 16th World Series game, as Jimmy Dudley has already told you.
- 2:56:25By the way, talking about World Series games, a guy we all know pretty well,
- 2:56:29Jolton Joe DiMaggio, appeared in 51 World Series games.
- 2:56:32That's an all-time record.
- 2:56:34That even tops the Great Bay Brookes by ten games and Lou Gehrig by 17.
- 2:56:40Mike Garcia pitching down to Don Mueller, who squares off,
- 2:56:42funds the ball back to the mound.
- 2:56:43Garcia has it, clips it over to Bobby Avila at the second baseman covering it first.
- 2:56:47And Dark has been sacrificed on down.
- 2:56:51So we have one Giant out here in the ninth inning.
- 2:56:53They're playing for an insurance run.
- 2:56:59Mays coming up to the plate.
- 2:57:02And so you can find every player's World Series record in the new Gillette World Series record book.
- 2:57:12Willie Mays moving in.
- 2:57:15He has one hit in three times, a double.
- 2:57:17Swings on this pitch and hits a one-hopper to Bobby Avila.
- 2:57:20The play goes over to first base to Vic Wirtz as Alvin Dark moves on over to third.
- 2:57:26So we have the second out here, hitting number nine, drives up at bat.
- 2:57:32Hank Thompson coming up to the plate.
- 2:57:36Thompson, who has walked a total of seven times,
- 2:57:41has had one base hit, a scratch hit in the seventh inning, second base.
- 2:57:49Thompson hitting left-handed.
- 2:57:52Garcia over his head, pumps, throws the fastball.
- 2:57:54There's another bounding ball.
- 2:57:55This one hit down to second.
- 2:57:56Avila has it on the second hop, throws to first, and the inning is over.
- 2:58:00So for the Giants, they have Alvin Dark open with a single to center,
- 2:58:03but he goes to third and gets no farther.
- 2:58:05No runs, one hit.
- 2:58:06The Giants had one man left on.
- 2:58:08That was their seventh left on here this afternoon.
- 2:58:11And there were no Cleveland Bears.
- 2:58:13So the score at the end of eight and one-half and he's a play.
- 2:58:16It's New York 7 and Cleveland 4.
- 2:58:20When the last man is out here in this ballgame,
- 2:58:22Bill Corm, one of the nation's number one sports columnists,
- 2:58:26will make a mad dive for the press box to get up here to the broadcasting booth.
- 2:58:30He'll be primed with the expert's view of the game,
- 2:58:32not only his own but that of the other top newspaper guys.
- 2:58:36You'll get a new picture of the game when you hear him.
- 2:58:38Stay tuned now for Bill Corm, will you?
- 2:58:53Now for the last half, opening number nine.
- 2:58:54Johnny Antonelli comes out.
- 2:58:56Just a little note we'd like to pass on to you.
- 2:59:00The most men left on bases, the record that is,
- 2:59:03in World Series play for a four-game series,
- 2:59:0664 men left on by both teams.
- 2:59:08That was the Yankees and the Cubs in 1932.
- 2:59:11And these two teams here playing in this World Series have already tied that one.
- 2:59:18The last half of the ninth inning, Sam Dente,
- 2:59:20is going to be the first man up for Cleveland.
- 2:59:22They have four runs on six bases, six and two errors.
- 2:59:25Four, six, two. Four Cleveland.
- 2:59:27Let's see, they have left one, two, three, four, five men so far.
- 2:59:32Five men have been left on. The Giants have stranded seven.
- 2:59:36First pitch by Johnny Antonelli to Sam Dente.
- 2:59:38It's a fast ball. It's outside for ball one.
- 2:59:41Seven runs, ten hits, three errors for New York.
- 2:59:46Seven left.
- 2:59:50Next pitch by Antonelli is another fast ball.
- 2:59:53It's high for ball two, and Dente's count now is two balls, no strikes.
- 2:59:57Last half of the ninth inning, Dente, Hegan,
- 2:59:59and probably a pinch better for Garcia.
- 3:00:06In comes the pitch to Dente.
- 3:00:08Antonelli's fast ball is good at the knees for a strike.
- 3:00:21Antonelli tries again, and Dente strides into a lot of fast ball.
- 3:00:26Takes it high for ball three. Three balls, one strike.
- 3:00:37Plus Weston takes his sign from the dugout, relays it on out to Antonelli.
- 3:00:43Gets down, pops the mid up as a target.
- 3:00:45Antonelli starts his pumping motion for the three-one pitch.
- 3:00:48Rears back, deals it off. Fast ball outside for ball four.
- 3:00:51So Sam Dente opens the ninth, little off.
- 3:00:54Off Antonelli, that's the first place on balls,
- 3:00:56and Strangeling up and with the second.
- 3:00:58The Indians have picked up here this afternoon.
- 3:01:05That's Jim Hegan, Leo DeRoscher.
- 3:01:07Lost the time, comes out, wants to talk to his catcher.
- 3:01:10Not his catcher, he wants to talk to West Weston.
- 3:01:13West has cut the entire series.
- 3:01:17DeRoscher standing in the circle just off the left home plate.
- 3:01:24Bumping their gums together and cooking up a little strategy for Jim Hegan and the Indians.
- 3:01:30Sam Dente, open the ninth with a walk.
- 3:01:33Hegan coming up there.
- 3:01:35Hegan himself walked in the third.
- 3:01:38Was a baserunner in the fifth on an error.
- 3:01:40And singled the left in the seventh.
- 3:01:42So he's had one for two today.
- 3:01:45Super 12 all told in the series.
- 3:01:47An overhand fastball to Jim.
- 3:01:48It's pulled right through off the fifth.
- 3:01:49Good first strike.
- 3:01:53No balls, one strike.
- 3:01:54It's a count on Jim Hegan.
- 3:01:57Right down to the last three outs for Cleveland.
- 3:02:00The Sands are really running through the arc last night.
- 3:02:04An overhand run up pitch is swung on.
- 3:02:05A pop foul off to the right of the plate.
- 3:02:07There comes Wadie Loughman in.
- 3:02:08He calls for it and Weston falls away
- 3:02:10and allows Loughman to come all the way down from first to make the catch and foul territory.
- 3:02:13Of course Dente holds on at first.
- 3:02:15That was a little number.
- 3:02:16A little pop foul off to the right of the plate.
- 3:02:19Weston would have had a tough time with that one.
- 3:02:21Wadie Loughman had to jump on the ball.
- 3:02:23And run it on through.
- 3:02:27All right, we're going to have a bench fighter now for Garcia.
- 3:02:30Dave Philly.
- 3:02:37He's a switcher.
- 3:02:41Fouting here in the ninth inning for Mike Garcia.
- 3:02:46One out, one on.
- 3:02:48Score seven to four in favor of the New York Giants.
- 3:02:50They have seven runs on ten hits, three errors.
- 3:02:53The Indians four runs, six hits.
- 3:02:54They have two errors.
- 3:02:59Giants trying to sweep it in four.
- 3:03:02The member serves me rightly, Mr. Corum, told us before this series started to look out for something like this.
- 3:03:07There's a fastball.
- 3:03:08Fired to Philly, hitting right handed and he swings and it doesn't get it.
- 3:03:17Dave Philly standing just off the plate.
- 3:03:19Keeps his feet pretty much together.
- 3:03:22At Nellie, very careful with his delivery.
- 3:03:24Looks at Dente at first.
- 3:03:25Delivers a lot of pitch to the plate.
- 3:03:26Philly swings and misses.
- 3:03:27All strike two.
- 3:03:29Dave is going to hit that one clear out into Lake Erie.
- 3:03:36Sam Dente is not being held on at first base by Wiley-Lockman.
- 3:03:44So the result is that Sam can take a pretty good lead.
- 3:03:48I'd like to say once again, here's we have the opportunity that the umpires that have been assigned here have done a magnificent job in calling the plays in this series.
- 3:03:59Now the O2 delivery.
- 3:04:00An overhand fastball off the face.
- 3:04:02Little high for ball one. One ball and two strikes.
- 3:04:15Now we're set.
- 3:04:16At Nellie checks his runner Dente.
- 3:04:17Delivers the play to fastball.
- 3:04:18Philly swings and misses for strike three.
- 3:04:20And that's all for Dave.
- 3:04:21Finch batting for Garcia.
- 3:04:23At Nellie, strikeout number two.
- 3:04:25The fourth man to go down in the Cleveland batting order by strikeout.
- 3:04:29Dave Pope.
- 3:04:31Who batted in the seventh inning for Al Smith and stayed on the play in left field in the eighth.
- 3:04:36Maybe that's a Dale Mitchell. Yes he is.
- 3:04:38Dale Mitchell was coming on the bat here in the ninth inning.
- 3:04:51What kind of batting Dale Mitchell comes on?
- 3:04:53The bat for Pope who batted for Smith in the seventh.
- 3:04:59The attendance as we are told here is 78,000.
- 3:05:02Here is the boost of the total.
- 3:05:05The ball going to 161,507.
- 3:05:08The pass is directed to established 1927.
- 3:05:10That record going to be 201,705 between Pittsburgh and the New York Yankees back in 1927.
- 3:05:19Now at Nellie the pitch to Dale Mitchell.
- 3:05:20He swings on the first pitch to Dale and touches a foul.
- 3:05:23That act is a lot to buy broadcasting.
- 3:05:24Dave right up over on your left microphone.
- 3:05:29Last half of the ninth inning.
- 3:05:30One on, two out.
- 3:05:34Starts from right down to the last out.
- 3:05:371954 World Series drawing rapidly to a conclusion right here at Municipal Stadium in Cleveland.
- 3:05:47That now is set.
- 3:05:48Brothers a curve taken by Mitchell over for a second.
- 3:05:52That was a great big jib handle curve.
- 3:05:54Mitchell fell away from it and slipped right over.
- 3:05:58Dale one of the nice guys in business out of Oklahoma City.
- 3:06:03Down and in.
- 3:06:07Ready for the row to pitch.
- 3:06:09Gently leaps away from first.
- 3:06:11Seven four score giant.
- 3:06:12At Nellie's pitching.
- 3:06:14Higher on the inside.
- 3:06:15McHale one ball two strikes.
- 3:06:18Mitchell batting for Pope.
- 3:06:21And Nellie trying to close it out and pick the win up for Liddell.
- 3:06:27If it should end this way, Lemon will be charged with a second loss in the 54th period.
- 3:06:33Lemon, Neuhausen, Nalersky, Martin, Garcia have all worked.
- 3:06:37Set on curve ball.
- 3:06:38Swing on and top down the third base man Hank Trotkin comes over and fouls.
- 3:06:41Gets the ball and the Giants are the World Champions of 1954.
- 3:06:46That's it.
- 3:06:47It's all over.
- 3:06:48Johnny Atteneley does it.
- 3:06:51And there they are.
- 3:06:52The Marlins are at Justin McJohn and Atteneley right now.
- 3:06:54While the Panthers score the New York Giants seven runs, ten hooks, three errors.
- 3:06:58The Cleveland Indians four runs, six hits, two errors.
- 3:07:01The winning pitcher is John Little.
- 3:07:02The losing pitcher is Bob Lemon.
- 3:07:04Now in just a moment Bill Cohn will review the highlights of today's game for us.
- 3:07:10The new VIV lipstick by Tony.

- 3:08:05VIV, new VIV lipstick by Tony.
- 3:08:11Well the Giants did with a play didn't they?
- 3:08:14For the first time since the 1914 Miracle Waves against the Athletics and the second time in World Series baseball history,
- 3:08:23the National League team has won a World Series in 4th State Games.
- 3:08:27It's been a couple of games, a series where it was 4-0 in a tie,
- 3:08:31one by the American League and one by the National, or maybe both by the National, but it doesn't matter.
- 3:08:36This is the second team ever they sweep for and that was way back in 1914 when the Braves did it.
- 3:08:42This is a good ball team, but not a great one in this World Series.
- 3:08:46Fine kicking, how about that little 23 year old kid from Massachusetts named Johnny Annanelli
- 3:08:52who walked out there in the finish in trouble brood and they had to hold that lead that they had built up in the early innings
- 3:08:58from 1.7 to nothing and struck out three men in the last two innings.
- 3:09:02The Pudas chasing in the eighth and winning the ninth and then finally a music pop up to Hank Thompson
- 3:09:07to send the Giants home singing in the sunshine.
- 3:09:11Now I may be on you a little bit later, but right now I want to wish to thank our engineers Jim Wigan and Al Ravdick,
- 3:09:19our statistician, Greg Giro and this program was directed and produced under the supervision of mutual sports director, Paul Jonas.
- 3:09:27This broadcast is authorized under broadcasting rights, founded by the Commissioner of Baseball,
- 3:09:32solely for the entertainment of our listening audience and any publication, any broadcast,
- 3:09:37are of the use of the district and the account of this team without the express consent of the Commissioners is prohibited.
- 3:09:44And now to wind up this World Series World Cup let's pick up Flanky Flake and some of those victorious Giants in their dressing room.
- 3:09:58We're in the Giants Clubhouse, the World Champions and before we have the captain of the Giants, Mr. Alvin Dock, high five for the most valuable player of the year. Alvin congratulations, you did a wonderful job. What about this World Cup?
- 3:10:15Oh it's been great, everyone on the ball has done a wonderful job, I'm just proud of everybody.
- 3:10:21Oh you did a wonderful job, Alvin what are you going to do this winter? I'm going to work for Megabore, my company, out of Houston, Texas. Great, congratulations, get my best of your parents, thank you guys.
- 3:10:32Here now let's get Mr. Leo, Leo D'Orocha, and oh this club did a tremendous job and it's marvelous to have the way these boys played, it was terrific. Hey, Monty, Monty Urban, come on over here.
- 3:10:55Monty, come on out here. Hey what did you hit Monty? What did you hit those balls with today? I hit a fast ball with curve ball.
- 3:11:04Really felt good, I'm real happy right now. Now I've got to get Mr. Harris Donovan over here. Mr. Commissioner won't you come up here please. Oh he's got a little commotion here. And the Commissioner of Baseball, Mr. Frank.
- 3:11:26Look at this, what a terrific series Frank, it really was a marvelous series, the Giants played a beautiful ball, Cleveland I know is kind of downhearted, I do feel that that club probably is a much better club than they showed out there, but what a terrific series.
- 3:11:39It was an interesting series, thank you very much Mr. Commissioner of Baseball Frank. Now I'd like to have Mr. Warren Giles, the President of the National League. Warren Giles, this is terrific, this is terrific, this is great.
- 3:11:53It's great for a great reason, what did you think of your ball club? Wonderful, I knew they were in all the way but I wasn't sure about four but I think it's great.
- 3:12:02Mr. Giles, didn't you think this was sort of an underrated ball club all year long? Has been all along, they've been tugging along, they've had a lot of guts, they've been a solid ball club that's made very few mistakes. Thank you Mr. President.
- 3:12:16Hey Leo, come on up here. Here's a fellow who did a terrific job. Hey Leo, boy we're having a lot of fun in this clubhouse and before I have Leo say a few words I want to say a few words to Leo.
- 3:12:35You did a tremendous job Val and you did it, you worked hard all year, you were a great leader with a fine ball club, congratulations. Well Frank, I certainly am Frank and I've always dreamed and had an ambition to be on the same club that won a World Championship to be part of it.
- 3:12:52And I really am deeply grateful for the New York players and I'm sure Mr. Stoneman and all the New York fans out here Frank, they were wonderful all year and it was a great thing. Everything we did seemed to be right and everything that the Cleveland club seemed to be wrong and go against them.
- 3:13:07I will say that my pitchers, pitchers, the players were great and I'm very thankful to the New York ball club. Bye Leo, hey let me get a little kiss up here now Leo. Can I get a kiss up here? Come on Donald.
- 3:13:24How did you think your daddy did? He said bye Leo. I'm going to get Horace if I can. I've got to get Mr. Horace Stoneman here. Great folks, we're going to have a great time here in the clubhouse and thanks and I hope you fans have enjoyed hearing from the very happy New York Giants.

- 3:15:36Hello baseball fans everywhere. This is Bob Elston again, studying for Bill Stern.
- 3:15:40Well, it's all over with the Shouting and the Giants, our new world baseball champion. It's been a thrilling series, one that baseball will be talking about for a long time to come.
- 3:15:50And right now we're going to get to professional opinions of managers Bertie Pettis of the Cincinnati Redlegs and Lonnie Marion of the Chicago White Sox on how this year's football series looks through the eyes of a big league manager.
- 3:16:02Your host as always is your friend and neighbor, your off-state insurance company agent.
- 3:16:07I'll have more to say about him later, but I'll tell you why he's one of the nation's most successful insurance men and a mighty good man to know and do business with.
- 3:16:16And why Bill Stern always says, you're in good hands if your off-state is up at the edge.
- 3:16:22But right now let's join Bertie and Lonnie for a final review of the 1954 Earl of Cury and the two big league managers' thoughts.
- 3:16:32First we want to send our good wishes and congratulations to manager DeRosha and the New York Giants.
- 3:16:38And we've heard the jubilation in the Giants' clubhouse.
- 3:16:42Bertie, I'm wondering, and perhaps the fans are too, what the feeling must be like in the clubhouse of a loser that has just lost the World Series in fourth grade.
- 3:16:51Well, I went through that in 1940. We didn't lose in fourth grade games, but it's just a feeling of loneliness and frustration and the feeling that we'll do it next year.
- 3:17:03It's just something that's indescribable. It's a great luck down because the World Series is a great thrill.
- 3:17:08Lonnie, have you expressed that? Have you been on the leading team in the World Series?
- 3:17:12Yes, Bob, one time back in 1943 when the Institute is. That was the only time.
- 3:17:17But just like Barry said, it's a great luck down. Everybody's taking names today and saying hello, boys, and good-bye, and it's a way to do it next year. That's about it.
- 3:17:25Well, that's one thing about baseball and sports. It's part of a game. There has to be a winner and there has to be a loser.
- 3:17:31And to be a great disloyal loser is just as important as winning as long as you're going to have to lose.
- 3:17:36Now, the Giants really won this series, and they won it in Sadiqe. Bertie, what did you think of the game today?
- 3:17:41Well, I thought it was quite a ballgame from the point of view of excitement, and as I had said all the way along the line,
- 3:17:48the Giants took the staffel, grinded it out. They've got the starters. If they don't have the stuffers, they have the relievers.
- 3:17:55They still had this unless the next bullpen, Bob.
- 3:17:58A little, real good ball, and of course, Anfonelli coming in on the gate from the 9th century.
- 3:18:03He got them out of there when it took flight. They might be able to break through.
- 3:18:07He did a great job. He just did the kind of a job he's been doing all year.
- 3:18:12Well, today, it was course seven-nothing, Cleveland coming back and trying to make a big difference.
- 3:18:18The game was certainly a lot of excitement for the Giants. Cleveland, throughout the series, just didn't have their coach.
- 3:18:23The Giants had a great tour throughout the pitching, their defense, their defense, their hitting, their running, everything.
- 3:18:28The Giants had a great ball coming to go to win.
- 3:18:31What about the pitching of the New York Giants against the Cleveland ball clubs in the entire series?
- 3:18:38They had something that I think stood out, the effectiveness of their right-hand pickers against the Cleveland left-hand hitters.
- 3:18:45Well, it was the story of one man in the Cleveland ball club, Vic Wipps, who was called Hitty,
- 3:18:50and we know in the National League that Gomez with the screwball and Anfonelli and Litty can take care of the left-handed hitters.
- 3:18:57And I think that the failure of the right-handed hitters on the Cleveland ball club to get hot was the difference between the series.
- 3:19:03The Giants' pickers in hand were left-handed hitters to a fit.
- 3:19:08Monty, of course, everyone knows that it's easy to pick up heroes on a team.
- 3:19:13There's just four straight World Series fall games.
- 3:19:16It can almost go down the Giants' lineup because it certainly is obvious this was a real team victory.
- 3:19:22But what about the Cleveland ball club?
- 3:19:24You and I can talk them off this year. We talked about great clubs, and I think you'll still throw us back.
- 3:19:29Yes, they are a great club.
- 3:19:30They're a club that won $111 to be a good ball club.
- 3:19:34They had a bad World Series.
- 3:19:37The Ropes is not the only out-turning thing. I talked to them about the series.
- 3:19:41He was great. Other than that, I think they had a good season. They had a very good start in the series.
- 3:19:48Let's go back to the first game. The Giants won it five runs, nine hits, two errors.
- 3:19:54Gleamon, uh, Glickham won that game.
- 3:19:58And Cleveland had two runs, eight hits, and no errors.
- 3:20:01Let's quickly cut off the features of that first game. Bertie, do you recall the first game?
- 3:20:06I think the only thing that we can talk about in that first game is Ropes' base hit and his pinch hitting.
- 3:20:13Of course, May was getting on base and so forth, but Ropes came into his story in the first game.
- 3:20:20Oh, what about you, Marty? That's not going to get that good.
- 3:20:24The second game, New York won it three to one on three runs, four hits, and no errors.
- 3:20:29Cleveland won on eight hits, four errors. The winner, Anthony Nellie, and the loser, wins.
- 3:20:33Marty, what about the second game?
- 3:20:34The second game was down and hanging back, McNeely and it was Gordon Picking, and they, uh, they couldn't get it, Mr. Ropes.
- 3:20:41The third game, it was New York six runs, ten hits, and one error. Cleveland two runs, two hits, and two errors.
- 3:20:49And they made a circus. And they were very happy, Vernon Gomez, because he thought,
- 3:20:54we Gomez have not lost the World Series game, and Ruben Gomez was the winner.
- 3:20:58Uh, Mr. Ray, what did you think about in your opinion in the first game?
- 3:21:01Well, Gomez did a great job, but Ropes came in, and, and, and, and, and, and the baseball game,
- 3:21:06the, the base hit with the bases loaded, and Wilhelm came in and did a great job,
- 3:21:11but I think the play that I remember in that ball is Alvin Duck getting hung up and allowing his runners to advance into the position they did before.
- 3:21:19Well, that was, uh, I think, was caught there between the puck and the plate.
- 3:21:24That really took something. Uh, Duck was really a standout player in the whole series.
- 3:21:29Uh, you see a lot from when he, when he was in the 19th league, and you know that, and we're in the 11th league, but I heard so much about him.
- 3:21:36Certainly, that's what he's crowded to be. A really great ball player.
- 3:21:40The question about that is, as a matter of fact, he's out of the three alleys today.
- 3:21:44He's a real fine team ball player, and the New York Giants, as we have said earlier in this program,
- 3:21:50are a great bunch of professional baseball players.
- 3:21:54Back to the final game in just a moment. Now, as we all know, it's fun to discuss a world series or anything else,
- 3:22:01but to come up with the right answers beforehand really calls for an expert,
- 3:22:04and believe me, there's one man you can always count on for the right auto insurance answers.
- 3:22:08He's the all-state insurance company agent in this neighborhood.
- 3:22:12You know when you recommend any product or service to your friend, you like to make sure they'll be getting quality of service.
- 3:22:20That's why I always tell my friends, fix our auto insurance problems for the all-state insurance.
- 3:22:27So, the all-state agent in your neighborhood is founded by you because he has the insurance plan,
- 3:22:34which is enlightened by your state after long history and examination.
- 3:22:38He knows your problems and the kind of protection he needs for your family,
- 3:22:41because he's a family man himself, working actively in your community,
- 3:22:45with traffic safety, vet schools, recreation programs for your children.
- 3:22:50He carries this same sincere, conscientious attitude,
- 3:22:53finding the very best auto insurance program for you,
- 3:22:57and then backs it up to fast, dependable personal service.
- 3:23:01That's why Bill Stern, in over two and a half years,
- 3:23:04you're in good hands with your all-state insurance company agent.
- 3:23:08And here's more good news.
- 3:23:10Your all-state agent can provide complete fire insurance coverage for your home
- 3:23:16at a savings of up to 20 percent compared to most common coverage.
- 3:23:22In the state agent now, you'll find all state officers in most serious stores,
- 3:23:27in distant service officers, and other convenient locations.
- 3:23:30You'll also find your all-state agent listed in the yellow pages of your telephone directory.
- 3:23:36Let's get back to the final game today, the totals.
- 3:23:39The Giants, seven runs, ten hits, committed three errors.
- 3:23:42Cleveland, four runs, six hits, and two errors.
- 3:23:45The winner, little, and the loser, lemon.
- 3:23:48Now, Marty, today, Lopez came back with lemon after two days away,
- 3:23:53and he took quite a gamble.
- 3:23:55If you think you have it, if you flip it over again,
- 3:23:57knowing the lemons ability, you're thinking you've still got lemon.
- 3:24:01If you ever hear a word, Bob, Lopez is more by a picture than anybody in the world.
- 3:24:06There's no difference what you can do, and after all, lemons are better than they had.
- 3:24:10And when you have your back to the wall, you come back to do that, and that's just what they did.
- 3:24:14I find it, they say, but lemon just didn't even have it today,
- 3:24:17but don't forget, the New York Giants are up.
- 3:24:21They're really up.
- 3:24:22Today, they can get the game, but I just don't think they can play by everybody.
- 3:24:26How do you feel about that, Marty?
- 3:24:28Well, in 1951 and 52, I was a catcher on that bar club,
- 3:24:32and Lopez didn't have the depth in pitching that he had this year, and he pitched lemons last year and won
- 3:24:38many times with two days' rest, and to prove that they could do the job,
- 3:24:42the last part of the season, I believe we won around 21 out of our last 26 games
- 3:24:46on that two-day rest rotation.
- 3:24:49The reason we didn't touch the bench is because they had the same kind of a record, so
- 3:24:53Lopez knew that lemons could do it, and he just kept picking his best man to take you had to win.
- 3:25:01What about just a comment on next year's Senate race?
- 3:25:05Marty, what effect do you feel that this loss will have on Cleveland,
- 3:25:09and what about the chances of your team in the White Sox in the race in 55?
- 3:25:13Being beaten a little through a four-straight ballgame,
- 3:25:16Portland will take a little side job to put them in the district at their time.
- 3:25:20By the time the next year rolls around, the Cleveland club, maybe they'll forget all about this,
- 3:25:25and Portland will be out there trying to win the flag next year.
- 3:25:28But I can say this to the White Sox, Bob, we are, too.
- 3:25:30I think it would help with a little bit of things if we were working on the right math,
- 3:25:34the White Sox may be battling this race next year.
- 3:25:36Now, Bernie, what about the Cincinnati Reds?
- 3:25:38That was a team that gave everybody a lot of headaches this year.
- 3:25:40What effect do you think the team in fourth straight will have on DeRosia and the Giants?
- 3:25:44Will they go into the next campaign, let's say, overconfidence,
- 3:25:47or do you anticipate the second kind of real tough, rough-and-tough races you had in the national league this year?
- 3:25:52Bob, there isn't any club in our league that's going to be overconfident.
- 3:25:55We've had two couple leagues, and any one of the first seven ball clubs that finished among the first seven this year
- 3:26:01are allowed to win that national league tennis.
- 3:26:03Nobody's going to get two questions in our league.
- 3:26:06What are your plans now, Marty?
- 3:26:08I'm going to take my wife and we're going away for a 10-day vacation trip, then I'm going back to work.
- 3:26:15What are your plans, Marty?
- 3:26:17Well, Bob, I'm going out to Oregon on a vacation trip for about two weeks
- 3:26:20to actually South Dakota for a little second-hand, and that's the only way.
- 3:26:24Would you like to just say a word, Bertie, about this?
- 3:26:27It's almost hard to pick out one or two players, because I think we're pretty certain
- 3:26:32four-game win for the New York Giants was a team victory.
- 3:26:35Were there any clear other players that you would like to just comment on in getting closer?
- 3:26:40Well, I think Jesse Rhodes did a fabulous job, and what we were overlooking was the fact that DeRosia
- 3:26:49picked Jesse Rhodes for the spot that he needed him the most. As a matter of fact, he didn't use Rhodes today.
- 3:26:55The pass out was a very fine managerial position to place himself in, because if this thing ever did get tied up,
- 3:27:04we always had Rhodes for that hot spot.
- 3:27:07What about Cleveland? They're just in close, then, Marty?
- 3:27:11Back there, you put oil to them.
- 3:27:13Yes, I was, but I thought they could win.
- 3:27:15Bob, that's the only advice that Cleveland had throughout the entire series, just like the first phase.
- 3:27:20He did a good job, especially with his big bat. I'm sure the low pass did the best that he could.
- 3:27:24The ball did the best that he could.
- 3:27:26Thank you both very, very much. And, friends, that's it. A new bit of ball-hunting has been born,
- 3:27:32so it's all hail to the New York and Rio Duos, the New Kings of the baseball world.
- 3:27:40And, friends, that's the last of the World Series Roundup. I was thinking for Birdie Pettis, Marty,
- 3:27:45and the Dibbitts turning myself. You know, we was a real kick out of bringing the second series.
- 3:27:50We hope you've made this year's World Series a bit more enjoyable for you.
- 3:27:55Now, many thanks to our hosts. We offer $2,000 all to save the first couple of days throughout the United States and Canada.
- 3:28:03Once again, I want to recognize that before you buy or renew our insurance, you can also get insurance company

- 3:28:21It would be a real privilege for me to tell you about this outstanding insurance man and community leader.
- 3:28:28I'm very glad to join my good friend Bill Stern and the over $2.5 million policyholders who say,
- 3:28:34you are in trouble with your all-state insurance company.
- 3:28:40My name is Bob O'Hara. It's been a real pleasure for Bill Stern on today's Allstate Show.
