- 0:12Hello friends, it's Sean here. It
- 0:15is the 30th of April, the very last day of the month
- 0:19of April. It is Tuesday, Tuesday Kayaobi
- 0:22in Japanese, which is the day of fire, which is
- 0:25fantastic after we made it through Monday and the
- 0:28energy can start to dip for Tuesday. No,
- 0:31this is the day where we fire up, get ourselves
- 0:34moving into the rest of the week. And
- 0:36I hope that's not too much of an effort for you today
- 0:39as we begin another day or we're halfway through or
- 0:42we're finishing another day wherever this finds you on
- 0:45this fine Tuesday. But irrespective of how you're
- 0:50going, we dip our toes back into this story of
- 0:54David and his family and their advisors and it is
- 0:58all going south for this family caught up in the
- 1:02consequences of sin and things are falling apart.
- 1:06It's not a good story, but it
- 1:09is what happened to this family as this dynasty
- 1:12began. So we continue to read and we
- 1:16open our hearts for the Holy Spirit to move in us
- 1:20and to teach us something more about God's character.
- 1:25So let's do that, shall we?
- 1:27Let us read together 2 Samuel
- 1:29chapter 17. Now,
- 1:42Ahaythophel urged Absalom, let me choose 12 ,000 men
- 1:47to start out after David tonight. I
- 1:49will catch up with him while he is weary and
- 1:52discouraged. He and his troops will panic
- 1:54and everyone will run away. Then
- 1:56I will kill only the king and I will bring all the
- 2:00people back to you as a bride returns to her
- 2:03husband. After all, it is only one man's
- 2:06life that you seek, then you will be at peace with
- 2:09all the people. This plan seemed good to Absalom
- 2:13and to all the elders of Israel. But
- 2:16then Absalom said, bring in Hushai, the Archite. Let's
- 2:21see what he thinks about this. When
- 2:23Hushai arrived, Absalom told him what Ahaythophel had
- 2:27said. Then he asked, what is your
- 2:29opinion? Should we follow Ahaythophel's
- 2:32advice? If not, what do you suggest?
- 2:36Well, Hushai reported to Absalom,
- 2:39this time Ahaythophel has made a mistake. You
- 2:43know your father and his men. They
- 2:45are mighty warriors. Right now they are as enraged as
- 2:49a mother bear who has been robbed of her cubs. And
- 2:52remember that your father is an experienced man of
- 2:55war. He might be spending the night
- 2:57among the troops. He is probably already hidden
- 3:00in some pit or cave. And when he comes out and
- 3:02attacks and a few of your men fall, there will be
- 3:05panic among your troops. And
- 3:07the word will spread that Absalom's men are being
- 3:09slaughtered. Then even the bravest soldiers,
- 3:13though they have the heart of a lion, will be
- 3:15paralyzed with fear. For all Israel knows what a
- 3:19mighty warrior your father is and how courageous his
- 3:22men are. I recommend that you mobilize
- 3:25the entire army of Israel, bringing them from as far
- 3:29away as Dan in the north and Be 'ersheba in the
- 3:32south. That way you will have an army
- 3:34as numerous as the sand on the seashore. And
- 3:38I advise that you personally lead the troops
- 3:40when refined David will fall on him like a Jew
- 3:45that falls on the ground. Then
- 3:47neither he nor any of his men will be alive. And
- 3:50if David were to escape into some town, you will
- 3:53have all Israel there at your command. Then
- 3:56we can take ropes and drag the walls of the town into
- 4:00the nearest valley until every stone is torn down.
- 4:04Then Absalom and all the men of
- 4:07Israel said, Hushai's advice is better than Ahaytophels.
- 4:11For the Lord had determined to
- 4:13defeat the council of Ahaytophels, which really
- 4:16was the better plan, so that he could bring
- 4:18disaster on Absalom. Hushai told Zadok and Abiathar,
- 4:23the priests, what Ahaytophels had said to
- 4:26Absalom and the elders of Israel, and what he himself
- 4:30had devised instead. Quick, he told them, find David
- 4:33and urge him not to stay at the shallows of the
- 4:36Jordan River tonight. He must go across once into
- 4:39the wilderness beyond, otherwise he will die and
- 4:42his entire army with him. Jonathan
- 4:45and Ahaymas had been staying at Enrogle, so as
- 4:48not to be seen entering and leaving the city.
- 4:51Arangents had been made for a
- 4:53servant girl to bring them the message they were to
- 4:55take to King David. But a boy spotted them at
- 4:58Enrogle, and he told Absalom about it. So
- 5:02they quickly escaped to Bohurum, where a man hid
- 5:05them down inside a well in his courtyard. The
- 5:08man's wife put a cloth over the top of the well
- 5:11and scattered grain on it to dry in the sun, so no
- 5:14one suspected they were there. When
- 5:16Absalom's men arrived, they asked her, have you seen
- 5:19Ahaymas and Jonathan? The woman replied, they were
- 5:23here, but they crossed over the brook. Absalom's
- 5:26men looked for them without success and returned to
- 5:29Jerusalem. Then the two men crawled out of
- 5:32the well and hurried on to King David, quick, they
- 5:35told him, cross the Jordan tonight. And
- 5:39they told him how Ahaythophil had advised that
- 5:41he be captured and killed. So
- 5:43David and all the people with him went across the
- 5:46Jordan River during the night, and they were all
- 5:49on the other bank before dawn. When
- 5:52Ahaythophil realized that his advice had not been
- 5:54followed, he saddled his donkey, went to his
- 5:59hometown, set his affairs in order, and hanged
- 6:03himself. He died there and was buried
- 6:06in the family tomb. David soon arrived in Mahanae. By
- 6:11now Absalom had mobilized the entire army of Israel
- 6:15and was leading his troops across the Jordan River.
- 6:18Absalom had appointed Amasa as
- 6:20commander of his army, replacing Joab, who had
- 6:24been commander under David. Amasa
- 6:26was Joab's cousin, his father was Jetha and
- 6:30Ishmaelite, his mother Abigail, daughter of Nahash,
- 6:34was the sister of Joab's mother, Jeruaya. Absalom
- 6:38and the Israelite army set up camp in the land of
- 6:41Gilead. When David arrived in Mahanae,
- 6:44he was warmly greeted by Shobi, son of Nahash, who
- 6:48had come from rubber of the Ammonites, and by
- 6:51maker, son of Amel from Lodebar, and by Barzali of
- 6:56Gilead from Rogelam. They brought sleeping mats,
- 6:59cooking pots, serving bowls, wheat and barley, flour and
- 7:04roasted grain, beans, lentils, honey, butter,
- 7:07sheep, goats and cheese for David and those who were
- 7:10with him. For they said, you must all be
- 7:13very hungry and tired and thirsty after your long
- 7:16march through the wilderness.
- 7:28Lord, you are a gracious and
- 7:30loving God and we come before you with hearts full
- 7:33of praise and with hearts full of gratitude for
- 7:37everything that you've done and everything that you
- 7:39are. Thank you that despite our
- 7:42busyness and the way we are consumed with our own
- 7:47plans and activities, you continue to be present and
- 7:52to be active, guiding and blessing, holding and
- 7:57nurturing in ways that we don't even know in all
- 8:01these behind the scenes spaces where you in your
- 8:05kindness are present, bringing about your kingdom
- 8:11priorities. So Lord, help us hold our own
- 8:15plans lightly, acknowledging that all that we do is
- 8:19but a small part of your much greater plan and we
- 8:23gladly surrender that to you, our loving, almighty
- 8:28God. And we pray all these things
- 8:31in the loving name of Jesus. Amen.
