Latest / Patriots Unfiltered / Training Camp-Cast 8/5: Walkthrough Tuesday, Joint Practice Preview, Positions to Watch, Full Day 11 Recap
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: On Tuesday, the Patriots dialed back to a walk through place,
- 0:03Speaker 1: but we're gonna break down the upcoming joint practice with
- 0:06Speaker 1: the Washington Commanders. Let's do it. Welcome to the Patriots
- 0:16Speaker 1: Training Camp cast, everybody. I'm Mike do So, joined by
- 0:19Speaker 1: Paul Perilo and Evan Lazar and guys. Today the eleventh
- 0:22Speaker 1: practice of training Camp. Dial Back to walk through seem
- 0:25Speaker 1: like they're really getting prepared for the Washington Commanders who
- 0:27Speaker 1: are gonna come in here tomorrow for a nice set
- 0:30Speaker 1: of joint practice. Is always fun to watch, But Paul,
- 0:32Speaker 1: I think maybe the biggest thing that stood out to me,
- 0:34Speaker 1: aside from some of the attendant stuff, is just getting
- 0:36Speaker 1: ready for Jad and Daniels in that offense.
- 0:38Speaker 2: And listening to Jabrill Peppers talk about it a little bit,
- 0:41Speaker 2: it's a good test for them. It's a guy that
- 0:43Speaker 2: was obviously pretty dynamic as a rookie last year. Peppers
- 0:46Speaker 2: talked about wanting to make sure that the discipline, the
- 0:49Speaker 2: eyes were in the right place. They want to make
- 0:50Speaker 2: sure they maintain their containment on the outside. So I
- 0:53Speaker 2: do think it'll be a nice little test for the defense.
- 0:56Speaker 2: They will see a handful of mobile guys and you know,
- 1:00Speaker 2: obviously Daniels is as electric as any of them.
- 1:02Speaker 1: Yeah, anything stand out to you today, Well, it would.
- 1:04Speaker 3: Just be interesting to see if some of the carryover
- 1:06Speaker 3: the reps that we saw in today's practice with you know,
- 1:09Speaker 3: Marcus Bryant still mixing in, Javon Baker mixing in a
- 1:12Speaker 3: little bit, and do those guys start to get opportunities
- 1:16Speaker 3: with Drake May and with the top offense. We'll see
- 1:19Speaker 3: you because daylight tomorrow is a day that Javon Baker
- 1:22Speaker 3: could make the team theoretically if he has a great
- 1:24Speaker 3: day against the Commanders. And you know, Latimore and Sanders
- 1:28Speaker 3: still in a good cornerback room in Washington. So I'm
- 1:31Speaker 3: just interested to see if that was like kind of
- 1:33Speaker 3: setting the table for giving those guys some of those
- 1:36Speaker 3: opportunities tomorrow to maybe make a push that we've already
- 1:40Speaker 3: seen a little bit here.
- 1:41Speaker 1: Yeah, I want to set the table a little bit
- 1:42Speaker 1: for joint practices. But first let's just talk a little
- 1:44Speaker 1: about the attendance two guys who left practice yesterday, Marcellus
- 1:48Speaker 1: Dial as well as Jaquelin Roy. We're not out there today.
- 1:51Speaker 1: We did see Carlton Davis, who continues his pattern of
- 1:53Speaker 1: showing up for walkthroughs light participant. Wouldn't anticipate to see
- 1:57Speaker 1: him either tomorrow or Friday nights still, but overall, it
- 2:01Speaker 1: seems like some of the depth on the offensive line
- 2:03Speaker 1: that's where I'm most interested. Guys. You know, Citisow has
- 2:06Speaker 1: been out for a little while, Caden Wallace has been
- 2:08Speaker 1: out for a little while. They've had to sign it.
- 2:10Speaker 1: You know, they brought in Alec Lindstrom at center as well.
- 2:13Speaker 1: How much is Will Campbell gonna play? I'm not expecting
- 2:15Speaker 1: to see a lot of Morgan Moses, but when I
- 2:17Speaker 1: look at these tackle positions, we've seen, like you said,
- 2:19Speaker 1: have more of Marcus Bryant in recent days. Tray Jacobs
- 2:22Speaker 1: has continued to work in with that unit. Those are
- 2:25Speaker 1: two guys I'm just going to start with on the outside.
- 2:27Speaker 1: Bryant and Jacobs has two tackles who opportunity for a
- 2:30Speaker 1: swing tackle position, but also very valuable depth. And you
- 2:33Speaker 1: can tell through training camp the Patriots have kind of
- 2:35Speaker 1: been building towards having that depth by getting them reps
- 2:38Speaker 1: early on.
- 2:39Speaker 2: Yeah, I think the right tackle spot is interesting because
- 2:42Speaker 2: of exactly what you said. Morgan Moses has been out
- 2:45Speaker 2: there every day but I think lately we've seen less
- 2:48Speaker 2: and less of him in the actual team reps today
- 2:51Speaker 2: when they were doing the walkthrough stuff, there was a
- 2:53Speaker 2: lot of rotation between Jacobs and and Bryant the rookie,
- 2:56Speaker 2: who I love the phrase that Evan has tools the rookie,
- 3:01Speaker 2: you know, because he does have all the measurables. I
- 3:03Speaker 2: think you'll see a lot of those two guys on Wednesday,
- 3:06Speaker 2: and you know, I think there might be an opportunity
- 3:09Speaker 2: for a swing tackle if one of these guys can
- 3:12Speaker 2: can show that they can play both sides. We haven't
- 3:14Speaker 2: really gotten to see Baderian Low. I would expect him
- 3:16Speaker 2: to be into that competition as well, So good opportunity
- 3:20Speaker 2: for those guys. You know, two young guys, Jacobson and Bryant.
- 3:23Speaker 1: Have you talked a little bit about wide receiver position.
- 3:25Speaker 1: I just want to hammer down on that a little
- 3:26Speaker 1: bit because it seems kind of obvious who the top
- 3:29Speaker 1: five guys are maybe right now at this point, but
- 3:31Speaker 1: when you get into the second year guys, the rookies,
- 3:34Speaker 1: that's where it seems like the opportunities are going to
- 3:36Speaker 1: be not only Wednesday joint practices, but in the Friday
- 3:38Speaker 1: night Yeah, a lot.
- 3:39Speaker 3: Of teams nowadays carrying six receivers on their fifty three
- 3:42Speaker 3: man roster, and so who has the inside track right now?
- 3:46Speaker 3: I feel like it's Javon Baker based off of what
- 3:49Speaker 3: we've seen in the last couple of days. But does
- 3:51Speaker 3: that hold. Does e Fton Chisholm come into this conversation,
- 3:54Speaker 3: just Jalen Polk come into the conversation. We know kenner
- 3:57Speaker 3: Burn's probably not going to be out there with the
- 3:59Speaker 3: injury he's dealing with, So that's the name that we're
- 4:02Speaker 3: not necessarily going to see. But between that group that
- 4:05Speaker 3: I just named right there, they all feel like they're
- 4:07Speaker 3: probably competing for one spot, and it's a lot of
- 4:10Speaker 3: guys to compete for one spot. So what direction do
- 4:13Speaker 3: they want to go in? I think will probably come
- 4:14Speaker 3: down to skill set, you know. Do they want to
- 4:17Speaker 3: have a bigger body X receiver like a Jaymon Baker,
- 4:19Speaker 3: Do they want to go with the prototypical slot like
- 4:22Speaker 3: Efton Chisholm, And which direction does that end up going in?
- 4:25Speaker 3: We'll see. But I'm just fascinated to see who catches
- 4:27Speaker 3: passes from Drake, Like that's always the big thing in
- 4:29Speaker 3: these practices. If you are catching passes with Drake May,
- 4:33Speaker 3: and you're running routes with Diggs and Kyle Williams and
- 4:35Speaker 3: Pop Douglas and Booty. They probably have a plan for
- 4:38Speaker 3: you to be around. So we'll find out.
- 4:40Speaker 1: Tomorrow, ye, Paul, I don't know if we're going to
- 4:42Speaker 1: see Terry McLaurin. It's definitely not in the game, probably Friday,
- 4:45Speaker 1: probably not on Wednesday either, But I want to highlight
- 4:47Speaker 1: maybe in a Patriot, we don't know about that, but
- 4:51Speaker 1: I want to highlight the cornerback position, which Christian Gonzalez
- 4:53Speaker 1: has now been out for a week, not expecting to
- 4:55Speaker 1: see Carlton Davis. A lot of opportunity, opportunity at that
- 4:59Speaker 1: position right from the get go. You're gonna start with,
- 5:01Speaker 1: you know, DJ James, who had a good day yesterday.
- 5:03Speaker 1: Alex Austin has kind of been their their stalwart out there.
- 5:06Speaker 1: But it's gonna mean opportunities for guys like Kobe Minor,
- 5:09Speaker 1: you know, go right down the list, including that injury yesterday.
- 5:12Speaker 1: Marcellus Dialay, Yeah.
- 5:13Speaker 2: I think that has a you know, potential impact. I
- 5:15Speaker 2: think he was taking some reps in the slot, you know,
- 5:18Speaker 2: behind Marcus Jones, So you know, I think that that
- 5:21Speaker 2: job is probably still open. They probably want somebody that
- 5:23Speaker 2: they feel good about playing inside other than Marcus Jones.
- 5:27Speaker 2: Maybe Isaiah Bolden gets, you know, some more opportunities to
- 5:30Speaker 2: do some of that stuff. We've seen him sort of
- 5:31Speaker 2: move around a little bit in the secondary, seen him
- 5:33Speaker 2: in the back end even at times. But yeah, DJ
- 5:36Speaker 2: James would seem to be a guy. He was getting
- 5:39Speaker 2: some of the reps today in the walkthrough, you know,
- 5:41Speaker 2: behind those other three guys that you already mentioned. You know,
- 5:45Speaker 2: Kobe Minor is the guy I noticed really for the
- 5:47Speaker 2: first time on Monday, sort of been around the ball
- 5:50Speaker 2: a little bit, celebrating some pass defenses. So maybe he's
- 5:54Speaker 2: starting to get his feet wet a little bit, you know,
- 5:56Speaker 2: one of the late round draft picks this in this class.
- 5:59Speaker 2: So opportunities definitely, for sure, some of those younger secondary corners,
- 6:04Speaker 2: there might be one job. And right, DJ James certainly
- 6:07Speaker 2: gotten a lot of reps you know, in those spots,
- 6:11Speaker 2: But I don't think it's a done deal by any means.
- 6:13Speaker 3: That's a fun conversation because I think in Washington they're
- 6:16Speaker 3: talking about the receiver position behind Terry McLaurin and are
- 6:19Speaker 3: worried that they don't have a lot of depth at receiver.
- 6:22Speaker 3: So now with the Patriots corners, we're talking about their
- 6:25Speaker 3: depth corners because of the injuries the Gonzales and Davis.
- 6:28Speaker 3: So it's a fun little matchup there of two groups
- 6:31Speaker 3: that are going to be really competing to earn roles
- 6:33Speaker 3: and to earn roster spots on both sides of the balls.
- 6:36Speaker 3: So we've heard a lot about you know, Deebo Samuel
- 6:39Speaker 3: in the shape that he's in right now and whether
- 6:41Speaker 3: or not he says anything left, but behind that it's
- 6:43Speaker 3: it's not a lot right there in Washington of household
- 6:46Speaker 3: names besides Deebo McLaurin. So I'm interested to see what
- 6:49Speaker 3: that group looks like.
- 6:50Speaker 1: Yeah, last point I want to talk about is just
- 6:52Speaker 1: Drake May the quarterback for me. I'm looking at the
- 6:55Speaker 1: last couple of practices. We've started to implement some situational
- 6:58Speaker 1: football end of minute too in its situation, we saw
- 7:01Speaker 1: them walking through that today. Anticipation is based on the
- 7:04Speaker 1: joint practices we've seen in the past that they'll have
- 7:06Speaker 1: at the end of the game, at the end of practice,
- 7:08Speaker 1: probably a you know, one possession kind of thing. Got
- 7:10Speaker 1: to have at the moment, and you know, guys, for me,
- 7:12Speaker 1: for Drake, he's looked really good early on in a
- 7:15Speaker 1: lot of these practices. He looks comfortable in seven on seven,
- 7:17Speaker 1: But I've found that as we've gotten into the more
- 7:19Speaker 1: competitive periods, he hasn't quite been able to stick that
- 7:22Speaker 1: dagger in that you know, we're really looking for. Going
- 7:25Speaker 1: back to the interception that we ended off the in
- 7:27Speaker 1: stadium practice, and I know we're questionable on that touchdown
- 7:31Speaker 1: yesterday that they ended the game, but still it was
- 7:33Speaker 1: kind of as evanport, I think, kind of a heave,
- 7:35Speaker 1: kind of a lucky you know, it wasn't maybe they
- 7:37Speaker 1: finished with a touchdown, but still I want to see
- 7:39Speaker 1: Drake May in this joint practice, be on the ball
- 7:42Speaker 1: and be really tight in these The number.
- 7:45Speaker 2: One thing that I would be paying attention to. It's
- 7:47Speaker 2: a combination of what both of you guys have talked about,
- 7:49Speaker 2: you talking specifically about May and Evan bringing up the
- 7:52Speaker 2: receivers that are actually catching passes from May some of
- 7:55Speaker 2: those secondary targets, so those of them would be probably
- 7:58Speaker 2: first and foremost. I want to see some consistent on offense.
- 8:01Speaker 2: The pass protection I don't think has been really good
- 8:03Speaker 2: throughout the summer. I'd like to see that be better.
- 8:06Speaker 2: We all remember what happened last year against Philly, So
- 8:08Speaker 2: I want to see a dramatic improvement in that department.
- 8:11Speaker 2: And I like to see which of these receivers that
- 8:13Speaker 2: Evan talked about already starts to emerge. So let's say
- 8:16Speaker 2: I get an opportunity, there's four of us for one job.
- 8:19Speaker 2: I'm going to take the step forward and I'm going
- 8:20Speaker 2: to emerge as the leading candidate, and absolutely Drake May.
- 8:24Speaker 2: It starts with Drake May in his consistency.
- 8:27Speaker 3: Yeah, I couldn't agree more. I feel like in these
- 8:29Speaker 3: practices we see some really high end flashes from Drake May,
- 8:32Speaker 3: dropping throws in the bucket and making some real highlight
- 8:35Speaker 3: real passes. But at the same time, the consistency of
- 8:38Speaker 3: being able to string plays together to drive the ball
- 8:41Speaker 3: down the field hasn't necessarily been there. And that's unfortunately,
- 8:44Speaker 3: for better or worse. That's kind of like his m
- 8:46Speaker 3: right now as a whole, even going back to North Carolina,
- 8:49Speaker 3: where you have four or five plays a game that
- 8:51Speaker 3: make your jaw drop, but can he consistently put it
- 8:54Speaker 3: together late in games especially, will be the question, but
- 8:57Speaker 3: mentioned the offensive line. We got to talk about it
- 8:59Speaker 3: a little bit. On the left side, you know, Will
- 9:01Speaker 3: Campbell and Jared Wilson against this commander's defensive line. Von
- 9:05Speaker 3: Miller's over there now, Javon Kinlaw, Deron Paine, Doran's armstrong
- 9:09Speaker 3: old friend Detrich Wise. You know, they do have some
- 9:11Speaker 3: rushers up front that can get after the quarterback Newton
- 9:15Speaker 3: second round pick last year, another guy, So it's more
- 9:19Speaker 3: I would say there's strength in Washington's the interior defensive line,
- 9:22Speaker 3: not necessarily the edge positions, which is why they brought
- 9:25Speaker 3: in von Miller. But still you want to see, especially
- 9:29Speaker 3: those two rookies Wilson and Will Campbell hold up in
- 9:32Speaker 3: this practice tomorrow and face some different matchups, different body types.
- 9:36Speaker 3: You don't necessarily have the tells, and you know them
- 9:39Speaker 3: as well as your own teammates. So let's see how
- 9:41Speaker 3: it looks.
- 9:41Speaker 1: Yeah, well, a lot to watch tomorrow during joint practices.
- 9:44Speaker 1: If you're able to make it down here to Foxborough,
- 9:46Speaker 1: it's a great take. If not, we'll be live on
- 9:48Speaker 1: the air with Patriots Unfiltered as practice starts off to
- 9:50Speaker 1: set the scene for you, and then of course we'll
- 9:52Speaker 1: be back after practice with a full Patriots Training Camp cast,
- 9:55Speaker 1: recapping everything that went down at joint practices. We'll see
- 9:58Speaker 1: you then,
