- 0:00Message that reaches read for us is in keeping with the tone that
- 0:042020 has set. What a weird year.
- 0:09It has been, I don't know how many of you are Watchers of the
- 0:14news or keepers of the social media.
- 0:17But if unless you've lived under a rock, I don't suppose you are
- 0:22unaware of the weird things that have happened across the world
- 0:27this year, and there's been a lot of About it.
- 0:30A lot of people have made a big deal about it.
- 0:33And I want to just kind of recap for you this morning.
- 0:36Some of the crazy things have gone on this year, you know, of
- 0:41course, we're all aware of the fact that we've all got masks
- 0:44on, or we've got masks in our pockets and we've been under a
- 0:49mask mandate for quite a while under our own State, other
- 0:54states having been under a mask mandate for perhaps even longer.
- 0:58But of course, we're all aware of This virus covid-19 that has
- 1:03swept through. Now, I guess the entire world at
- 1:07one particular Point as I recall, as it was going through
- 1:11Italy and you might remember little bit more about that than
- 1:14me, but I feel like the death rate was at like 16 percent at
- 1:18one particular point, or at least that's how it was being
- 1:20advertised through the, through the media to us.
- 1:23And, of course, that trickled on down.
- 1:25But you know what it is, you know, have any A of us lived
- 1:31through anything like this. I was talking to my dad, several
- 1:34weeks back and I was like, you know, I'm almost 40 years old.
- 1:40Now, I'm 40 and haven't experienced anything like this,
- 1:43in my lifetime and he said, I haven't experienced anything
- 1:46like this in my lifetime, you know, my dad is almost almost 70
- 1:50years old, but I don't know how many of you recall as 2020,
- 1:54began back in January. There was this whole thing about
- 1:59the murder her. It's do y'all remember hearing
- 2:01anything about the murder hornets and everybody thought,
- 2:03you know, kit kit in 2020? Get any worse.
- 2:05Somebody said back in January, shame on them for for even
- 2:10asking that question. But here's here's just a little
- 2:13tiny, quick list of a bunch of the crazy things that have gone
- 2:15on this year. Of course, after after covid,
- 2:19the worldwide pandemic, you had the the stock markets that
- 2:22crashed worldwide. The Olympics were eventually
- 2:27cancelled. You had the murder Hornet.
- 2:32She had all the Hurricanes and it seemed this year.
- 2:34And in fact, eventually there was talk of a double hurricane
- 2:37coming right up through the Gulf of Mexico.
- 2:39I saw one of the memes on social media that had a guy standing up
- 2:43at the at the bingo board with all these weird things in it.
- 2:46He turns around and he asked. All right, Who had, who had
- 2:49double hurricanes? Let's put that up there on the,
- 2:52on the list. All the shutdown's all the
- 2:55lockdowns. The stay-at-home orders, The
- 2:57Basque mandates, and, of course, let's not forget.
- 3:00About all the riots across our country.
- 3:03The presidential impeachment trial, the Boy Scouts of America
- 3:08went bankrupt, numerous celebrities musicians and
- 3:12athletes passed away. In various ways.
- 3:15There was the Iranian, the Iranian flight that was shot
- 3:19down 174, people perished in that in that plane crash and
- 3:25wildfires wildfires here in our country, but also the wildfires
- 3:29in Australia. Leah that was earlier in the
- 3:31year. I don't know if any of you have
- 3:33gone back and look, I was curious this week as I was
- 3:36prepping for some of this and I was wondering how many, how many
- 3:40acres are square miles, were burned in Australia in
- 3:43Australia. The forest fires destroyed,
- 3:46destroyed, 42,000 square miles of land Alabama.
- 3:53The state of Alabama is only 52 thousand square miles big.
- 3:57So almost a portion of Australia almost the size.
- 4:00Of Alabama burned up in flames and that's just a short list.
- 4:04You can go on the internet. I don't don't do it right now,
- 4:07but you can go on the internet and you can ask what crazy
- 4:09things have happened in 2020. And the list is really, really
- 4:13long. And of course, having social
- 4:18media or watching the news, we've been reminded of it almost
- 4:22every day all year long about how terrible how terrible this
- 4:26year has been a my, the Only one or have any of you grown, just a
- 4:32little bit. Tired of the amount of wine Enos
- 4:38and complaining of how bad the year has been hating out.
- 4:41Don't get me wrong. I've been guilty of sharing
- 4:43something from time to time on social media, as well about how
- 4:47terrible 2020 has been. So I've been one of the whiners
- 4:50like everyone else, but you know, at what point are we going
- 4:55to realize that? We're still really blessed and
- 5:00we should still be really thankful for the things that we
- 5:04do have. Maybe this year has been
- 5:06especially hard for you. Maybe none of those things that
- 5:10I've mentioned, have really affected you, but but maybe
- 5:13you've had things going on in your own life that has made this
- 5:17year. Very difficult.
- 5:20Maybe you lost your job. Maybe your health has been in
- 5:23Decline. Maybe you've had an injury and
- 5:25you've had to have surgery, or maybe you've been Diagnosed with
- 5:29cancer and you've had to start treatments.
- 5:32May be some loved one is very very sick, or maybe some loved
- 5:35one has passed away. You know, there are a lot of
- 5:38things that a lot of us have gone through this year that has
- 5:41nothing to do with that long list that I read a moment ago,
- 5:44that is affected. Maybe the way that we have felt
- 5:48about this year. Facing such circumstances can be
- 5:55tremendously difficult and it's easy to find ourselves being a
- 6:00complainer, isn't it? It's easy for us to to wine and,
- 6:05and wallow in our sorrow and, and sometimes, you know, I don't
- 6:08want to belittle the sorrow that we feel because, sometimes we
- 6:13have every right to feel sorry for the things that we're going
- 6:16through. But let's not allow the
- 6:19circumstances of life. To affect how we live our lives,
- 6:24as Christians, you know, the way the year has gone and the amount
- 6:29of dialogue that I have heard and the rhetoric that's been
- 6:32used in the media about this year.
- 6:36Really made me think a lot about the Israelites.
- 6:39I really want to real quickly. Give you some passages from the
- 6:41Old Testament, so you're not going to have time to turn to
- 6:43them, but I'll mention them really quickly, but you're
- 6:47called Israelites from the moment that Moses had helped
- 6:50them Escape. Up the clutches of the Pharaoh
- 6:53in Egypt to leave from about the moment that they left Egypt from
- 6:58being under hard, labor being slaves.
- 7:01And now they're, they're getting to escape.
- 7:03They're going to get to go start their own Nation from that time.
- 7:06They began to complain about all kinds of things.
- 7:10You're the first one that I recall is they get to the Red
- 7:12Sea and they can't cross it in Pharaoh's Army is, is bearing
- 7:17down on? They say, Moses.
- 7:19Look what you've done. You've led us out here to die.
- 7:22We'd be better off back back in Egypt and here's just a few
- 7:27extras extras 1524 and the people murmured against Moses
- 7:32saying, what shall we drink? They felt like they were dying
- 7:34of thirst, Exodus 16 to and the whole Congregation of the
- 7:38children of Israel murmured against Moses and Aaron in the
- 7:41wilderness, Exodus 17:3 and the people thirsted, therefore
- 7:46water, and the people murmured numbers 14 to and all the
- 7:50children of Israel murmured against Moses.
- 7:51And The whole congregation said to them, would God that we had
- 7:55died in the land of Egypt or would God, we had died in this
- 7:59Wilderness? They're saying he's been better
- 8:01off. Had we just died.
- 8:03Then what we're at what we're going through now numbers 14:29.
- 8:06This is what God says, your carcasses shall fill shall fall
- 8:10in the wilderness and all that were numbered of you according
- 8:14to your whole number from twenty years old and upward which have
- 8:17murmured against me number 16, 41 on the morrow.
- 8:21All the Congregation of the children of Israel murmured
- 8:24against Moses and against Aaron saying, you have killed the
- 8:26people of the Lord. What you've done that, the
- 8:30choices you've made Moses and Aaron they have caused us to
- 8:33come to a point where we're going to die.
- 8:35Exodus 16 7 in the morning. Then you shall see the glory of
- 8:39the Lord for for that. He heareth your murmurings
- 8:42against the Lord and what are we that you're murmur against us?
- 8:48Exodus 16 8 and Moses said this shall be when the Lord shall
- 8:50give you in the Evening flesh to eat.
- 8:53And in the morning bread to be full for the Lord hears your
- 8:57murmurings, which you murmur against him.
- 9:00And what are we? Your murmurings are not against
- 9:03us, but against the Lord Moses says, your, your whining against
- 9:06God. Numbers 14:27.
- 9:10How long shall I bear with this evil congregation?
- 9:13Which murmurs against me. I've heard the murmurings of the
- 9:17children of Israel, which they murmur against me, a numbers
- 9:201436 and the men which Moses sent to search the land you
- 9:24recall. This is when the spies were sent
- 9:25into the promised land when they returned and made all the
- 9:29congregation. All the people of Israel.
- 9:31They made them all murmur against him by bringing up a
- 9:36slander upon the land. They came back.
- 9:38The promised land and they stirred up the people to believe
- 9:41that. There's no way they could take
- 9:42it. They could, there's no way they
- 9:43can have it. And so they began to whine and
- 9:46complain and say to Moses and Aaron.
- 9:48You've led us out here to die. I read those passages.
- 9:52In fact, the word murmur is use like 87 times in the Bible.
- 9:56Most of which guess what are found?
- 9:59Right smack here. Where the Israelites are doing
- 10:02all of their complaining. Does it not sound reminiscent of
- 10:07what we have heard. All this year perhaps even from
- 10:10my own mouth. I think.
- 10:12Yeah, I've heard myself. Well, I didn't complain about
- 10:14how bad this year has been. But you know what, I think about
- 10:18it. Maybe my year has not been bad
- 10:20as bad as someone else's year. Just like the Israelites,
- 10:28perhaps, we have a lot to murmur about, but let's let's go back
- 10:37to Israel and put ourselves in the mind of God as he is
- 10:42listening to their whining and complaining.
- 10:43What is God. What is God thinking?
- 10:46As he hears? The Israelites do all this
- 10:48complaining? He's thinking, I've set you free
- 10:51from pharaoh and your hard laborers.
- 10:52I've given you fresh water every time that you've asked for it.
- 10:57Leslie, you know, from a rock from a see where Moses just had
- 11:02to throw a log into it and it turned it into fresh.
- 11:05I have, I've given you guidance by day and by night, I've legs
- 11:11you, I have fed you and even when you got tired of eating one
- 11:15thing, I gave you something else to eat.
- 11:17And now I have brought you to a land that you didn't cultivate
- 11:21the ground. You didn't grow the crops.
- 11:23You didn't, you didn't plant, The Vineyards, you didn't raise.
- 11:27The cattle and you didn't build the houses, but I'm about to
- 11:30allow you to have all of it and you've done no work worthy of
- 11:34having it all. I'm just going to give it to
- 11:36you. So God looks down from heaven as
- 11:39he hears the Israelites murmuring and complaining and
- 11:42whining. And what does he say you have so
- 11:45much to be thankful for you have so much to be happy about?
- 11:50Why can't you see it? So maybe just like the
- 11:55Israelites we have much to be thankful for maybe as we think
- 12:00about this year. Perhaps, we should put ourselves
- 12:02again in the mind of God and ask ourselves, how must he be
- 12:05looking down upon us. What must he be thinking when he
- 12:09looks at us complaining when we have so many blessings.
- 12:14There was a man, a long time ago.
- 12:15We found himself in prison, separated from his friends
- 12:20separated from his comfort separated from his freedom,
- 12:26unjustly accused brutally, treated as Reese, red force, a
- 12:31moment ago. Perhaps with every footstep that
- 12:35he heard coming down the hallway.
- 12:37As he waited in his in his prison.
- 12:40I've often wondered. If he heard these footsteps
- 12:44coming, was he thinking this might be it?
- 12:47This could be, this could, this could be the end.
- 12:50This is the time of my execution and maybe The cell opens or the
- 12:56door opens and it's just another meal time for him or just
- 13:00another visitor or just someone, they're asking questions about
- 13:04the gospel that he's been preaching about, but I wonder
- 13:06every time he heard footsteps, what must have Paul thought when
- 13:10he heard those not an hour, would pass when Paul was free
- 13:14from his constant, irritation of chains and shackles or cuffs, or
- 13:19whatever. You want to call them, the
- 13:21irritation of having them on his, his wrist, perhaps, Ankles,
- 13:25maybe even causing cuts and sores and blisters as day and
- 13:30night. He was chained to a guard if
- 13:34ever there was a person who had a right to complain to be
- 13:40unhappy. It had to be Paul.
- 13:42I mean, did you hear the scripture reading a moment ago,
- 13:44what Paul talks about it was his experiences as he was serving
- 13:48the lord five times. He received of the hands of the
- 13:51Jews, 40 lashes. Less 13 times.
- 13:56He was beaten with rods. He was once stoned three times.
- 14:00He was Shipwrecked a night. In the day.
- 14:04He was adrift at Sea. He was on frequent Journeys.
- 14:07He was in danger of rivers, dangers of robbers, dangers of
- 14:10his own people dangers, from the Gentiles danger, in the city
- 14:14danger. In the wilderness danger at Sea,
- 14:16Danger from false Brothers in Toil and hardship through many
- 14:20sleepless nights in hunger and thirst.
- 14:24Going without food, and cold and exposure.
- 14:26And apart from this is a verse 28, which I did not have Reese,
- 14:30read but verse 28 says. And apart from other things.
- 14:33There is the daily pressure on me of my anxiety for all the
- 14:36churches even amongst all these terrible hardships.
- 14:40He was facing one of his anxieties was.
- 14:43He was worried about the church. If ever a man had any reason to
- 14:49be a complainer, a murmur or a winery, it had to have been
- 14:54Paul. Yet, Paul didn't feel that way.
- 14:59Paul didn't speak as one who was a complainer or a murmur or a
- 15:04whiner Paul writes from prison in Philippians, chapter 4 verses
- 15:084 through 7. He says rejoice in the lord
- 15:11always. And again, I say rejoice, he
- 15:15writes that from prison, let your moderation be known unto
- 15:19all men. The Lord is at hand be careful,
- 15:21or do not be anxious in anything but in everything Thing by
- 15:26prayer and supplication with Thanksgiving, let your requests
- 15:31be made known unto God and the peace of God, which passes all
- 15:36understanding Paul had Paul had peace even amidst all the
- 15:40beatings and the whippings and the stonings, and the
- 15:43shipwrecks, and the hunger, and The Thirst and all the problems
- 15:46that he had from other people. He still was able to have a
- 15:49peace that passes all understanding shall keep your
- 15:53hearts and Minds through Christ Jesus.
- 15:55Jesus Paul wrote in another one of his prison Epistles and
- 15:58Ephesians chapter 5 and verse 20.
- 16:01Again from prison. Paul writes giving.
- 16:04Thanks always for all things unto God and the father, in the
- 16:08name of our Lord. Jesus Christ giving.
- 16:10Thanks always for all things. You mean even in prison Paul,
- 16:15even when you're swimming in the Deep for 3 days and 3 nights
- 16:19because your ship has Shipwrecked even during the
- 16:22scourgings and the whippings and the beatings in the stonings.
- 16:33Being thankful for God's blessings should be one of the
- 16:36most distinctive marks of a believer of Jesus Christ being
- 16:43thankful even in the midst of difficulty.
- 16:47And not just once a year on Thanksgiving.
- 16:49I hope this lesson doesn't seem so cliche being so, so close to
- 16:52Thanksgiving. But what caused me to want to
- 16:54want to do this lesson is the fact that I thought about 2020,
- 16:58just, you know, can we just get past it?
- 17:01You know, I was thinking Then I thought you know, we're really
- 17:05blessed. I think we all need to be
- 17:08reminded of that. Being thankful for what?
- 17:11We do, have not always thinking about what's on the other side
- 17:15that pasture is greener over there.
- 17:16But thinking about what we do have and being thankful for
- 17:19those things that we have is one of those distinctive traits that
- 17:23every Christian ought to have in their lives.
- 17:27Nothing turns us, bitter and selfish or dissatisfied more
- 17:32quickly than an ungrateful heart.
- 17:38You know, being being unthankful and on the flipside, nothing
- 17:41will do more to restore our contentment and the joy of
- 17:46Salvation than a true Spirit of thankfulness.
- 17:50And that's what we need amongst us.
- 17:52As Christians is a true Spirit of thankfulness for what God has
- 17:56done for us. Jason talked to us for just a
- 17:59few moments Wednesday night about Jesus encounter with the
- 18:04ten lepers as you recall. I don't mean, I don't know how
- 18:06many of you were here Wednesday night, but just real quickly,
- 18:10Jesus encountered 10 lepers who are begging to be to be healed
- 18:14and Jesus restores them to their their full bill of health.
- 18:19An amazing miraculous thing. It's something that every leper
- 18:24longed for was to have leprosy taken from them.
- 18:29You know, it is something that is completely depict
- 18:32debilitating it transforms. The figure of the person makes
- 18:35them oftentimes hideous looking and it separates them from
- 18:40normal society in. Jesus heals them but only one
- 18:43comes back. Only one comes back to thank
- 18:47Jesus for what he had done. You know, in gratitude and
- 18:51thankless necess. Was not just a problem.
- 18:55Then in gratitude and thankless. Nastas is a major problem in our
- 18:59society today. It's because we expect, we
- 19:04expect for this to be done and I shouldn't have to thank you for
- 19:07doing it because I deserve it. I have worked for it.
- 19:12It is mine. It is rightfully belonging to
- 19:17me. Therefore.
- 19:18I have no need to thank you for that.
- 19:24One of the Bible's indictments against rebellious.
- 19:27Humanity is found in Romans, 1:21.
- 19:30And in that verse we read for although they knew God, they did
- 19:35not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became
- 19:42futile in their thinking and their foolish Hearts were
- 19:45darkened. He wanted to accusations that
- 19:48Paul makes towards Mankind and their sin is is it's not just It
- 19:54people lied. It's not just that people stole.
- 19:57It's not just that people committed murder.
- 19:59It's not just the people committed adultery and on and on
- 20:02the list we could grow. But Paul says they did not give
- 20:07thanks to God. You start at the beginning of
- 20:11the Bible and read to the very end from one end to the other.
- 20:14The Bible is chocked full of commands to be thankful.
- 20:17In fact, thankfulness. It should be the natural out
- 20:21flowing from our heart. When we We truly know who God
- 20:25is. We talked about this a little
- 20:26bit in our Young Adult class this morning, but when we come
- 20:29to know. Who God is, what he gave for us,
- 20:34his son who Jesus is and what he gave for us his life.
- 20:40The natural thing. That should should come out of
- 20:43us. Is we're incredibly thankful.
- 20:48The psalmist declared in Psalm 147 and verse 7, sing to the
- 20:51Lord with Thanksgiving. Paul says in Colossians 3 and
- 20:56verse 15. The very last part of that
- 20:57verse. He says Be Thankful.
- 21:01They Spirit of Thanksgiving is always the mark of a joyful
- 21:06Christian and I started thinking about this a little bit.
- 21:08You know, what comes first. Is it?
- 21:11Is it? I am happy.
- 21:14I'm joyful. And therefore I'm thankful or is
- 21:19it the opposite? Is it?
- 21:21I am thankful. I am grateful, and therefore, I
- 21:26am joyful. And I'm happier thought about
- 21:28that, which comes first and my thankful because I'm happy.
- 21:34Or am I happy? Because I'm thankful.
- 21:36I believe what scripture teaches us is the the true joy and the
- 21:40true happiness that we get that comes from the almighty.
- 21:43Can only be had once. Thankful for what has been given
- 21:48to us. No, true.
- 21:50Happiness can be had apart from the Salvation that is found in
- 21:54Jesus Christ because if you have happiness and you're not right
- 21:57with God, if you have happiness and your sins have not been
- 22:00washed away by the blood of Jesus Christ, how can you truly
- 22:03be happy? Apart from the Saving Grace
- 22:07found in Jesus blood we need to learn to be thankful.
- 22:14And in doing that only. Then can we find true happiness
- 22:18and true Joy? When I want to give you the last
- 22:2010 minutes of the lesson this morning.
- 22:21I want to give you real quickly for things that I think that we
- 22:24should be thankful for their. You can make a big long list.
- 22:27So if I say, hey, jot down a list real quick.
- 22:29What should we be thankful for? In this life?
- 22:31You can make a really long list. I've tried to boil it down to
- 22:33just four things. I want to try and give those to
- 22:35you. This morning of time.
- 22:36Permits. Number one.
- 22:37We should be thankful for God's material blessings that he has
- 22:43given us. That's pretty simple, right?
- 22:44Know we talk about that all the time.
- 22:46Jeremy had asked me a few days ago.
- 22:48You know, what was my lesson going to be on?
- 22:50He wanted to try and plan some songs accordingly, accordingly,
- 22:52and you did a fantastic job and I liked learning the meaning of
- 22:57that word rapture in that first song that she did.
- 22:59That was, that was absolutely right in tune with what we're
- 23:02talking about this morning. I had had my lesson a little bit
- 23:08further down where I was going to try and do an example and I
- 23:11don't know if I ever really came up with a good one, but I'm
- 23:13going to use it before I go into some of these verses.
- 23:16I think it's easier to be thankful for the things that we
- 23:19have. Let's say material things.
- 23:23When we realize that we have them be not because of our own
- 23:28doings, but because someone else has given it to us, it's let me
- 23:34say it again. It's easier.
- 23:35To be thankful for the things that we have.
- 23:39When we are given given them by someone else other than from our
- 23:43own doing. And the only way that I think
- 23:45about it is this, it's Christmas Day.
- 23:48There's a present. It's got your name on it.
- 23:50You didn't know you were getting a present.
- 23:52You had not asked for anything and it's got you who got me
- 23:56this, you know, and everybody's like, oh, we don't know.
- 23:59It's a surprise, you open your present and you use Willis
- 24:03pretty neat. I didn't know anybody was
- 24:04getting many things. You pick up that box and you
- 24:07tear open the wrapping paper and you look down here.
- 24:11I've always wanted one of these. I don't know what it is.
- 24:13It's whatever. You've always wanted and you've
- 24:16got it. There it is.
- 24:17Who did this who knew I wanted this.
- 24:19And finally, someone sheepishly raises their hands.
- 24:22And you're like, thank you so much.
- 24:25You go over and you hug them now.
- 24:28Would you have been more happy? Had you gone to the store and
- 24:31bought it for yourself? No, it was way more fun to have
- 24:36gotten it as a surprise from someone who just knew.
- 24:39However, they knew they knew that you wanted it and they
- 24:41surprised you with it. You didn't buy it.
- 24:43You didn't go to the store and get it.
- 24:45It was given to you. I don't know how many of you
- 24:48ever flown on a plane flying on a plane is miserable.
- 24:51Especially if you're a poor person like myself and you ride
- 24:55with all the poor people towards the back of the plane, where the
- 24:57seats are all super close together and, you know, for us
- 25:01bigger folks, you know, you're having to ride.
- 25:03Like this, you know, there's no Elbow Room.
- 25:06The first thing you do when you sit down, as you want to click,
- 25:08this is my armrest, you know, total stranger.
- 25:10This is where my arm will be for the remainder of the flight.
- 25:13A few years back. A couple of missionary buddies
- 25:15of mine were flying flying somewhere and they were actually
- 25:19late to making it to the gate. They were the last people
- 25:22getting on the plane. They were running down, you know
- 25:26to the gate and they get there and they ask, you know, so
- 25:29sorry, we're late, they like no worries.
- 25:32We haven't closed it up. At your good.
- 25:33Can we see your tickets? And they hand them the tickets.
- 25:35And one of the one of the individual says, is there any
- 25:37way I could get a window seat, you know, is kind of, you know,
- 25:42kind of gutsy to be begging for something when you're the last
- 25:45one, getting on the plane, but the lady says, well, let me, let
- 25:47me see here for just a second. You know, they do the little tip
- 25:49toe. Tip it and she goes.
- 25:50Oh, yes, I think I can give you an upgrade and she prints out
- 25:53some new tickets hands it to this guy and his buddy and they
- 25:56go to get on the plane and guess where they're sitting.
- 25:59First class, they had two spots left.
- 26:03It was one of those. One of those spikes that was
- 26:04kind of like a pod that closes up and you're just in there in
- 26:08the seat reclines all the way down into a bed and they brought
- 26:11in one of these goody baskets with fresh fruits and drinks and
- 26:15snacks and chocolates. How excited you think that they
- 26:18were to be riding in that particular place.
- 26:21They were ecstatic. Was it of their own doing?
- 26:25No, they couldn't afford that. It was given to them.
- 26:29Them. We are happier and we're more
- 26:31thankful. When we realize, what we have is
- 26:33something that is not of our own doing, it is given, and let me
- 26:36tell you everything, that every one of us in here.
- 26:39This morning has we have it because God has given it to us.
- 26:45Let me give you some quick passages here where they go
- 26:48here. They are Psalm 24 and verse 1.
- 26:52A Psalm of David. The Earth is the Lord's and the
- 26:55fullness thereof the world and those who dwell therein
- 26:58everything. God's James 1 verse 17.
- 27:01Every good gift. How many?
- 27:03Good gifts, which could gifts every good gift.
- 27:05And every perfect gift is from above Psalm 15 verse 10.
- 27:11For every beast of the forest is mine says God the cattle on a
- 27:15thousand hills Ephesians 2 and verse 8, for by Grace, you have
- 27:20been saved through faith, and this is not of your own doing.
- 27:24It is the gift of God. Every single thing we have is
- 27:31from God. David writes in first
- 27:33Chronicles, 29 verses 12 through 14 both riches and honor come
- 27:37from you. He's talking to God both riches
- 27:39and honor come from you and you rule over all in your hand, our
- 27:43power and might and in your hand it is to make great and to give
- 27:47strength to all and now we think you are God and praise your
- 27:52glorious name, but who am I and what is my people that we should
- 27:57be able to the Offer willingly for all things, come from you
- 28:02and of your own. Have we given you?
- 28:06In fact you read a different modern translation and that last
- 28:10part end of your own. We have given you, you know, it
- 28:13David saying there? Everything God that we give to
- 28:16you. It was already yours, you know,
- 28:20the money that I gave on the first day of the week.
- 28:23You know, it was already yours, Lord, Romans, 13, and verse.
- 28:27One tells us that even the powers that be even the people
- 28:30that are in positions of leadership, or power.
- 28:33They're there because God has allowed them to be there.
- 28:38So when we come to a realization that everything that we have,
- 28:43it's been given to us. It makes us more thankful, more
- 28:47thankful more. So thankful than had.
- 28:49We thought? I've earned this.
- 28:51I got my own job. I went in for the interview.
- 28:54I nailed it. And now I've worked hard.
- 28:57I put in my time and I'm being paid.
- 29:00I can getting raises look at the good job that I'm doing.
- 29:03I'm a great worker, careful. Now you sound like
- 29:06Nebuchadnezzar. Nebuchadnezzar walking through
- 29:09his Palace, looking at all of his great things and all of his
- 29:11great feats and bragging about what he had done and God
- 29:14reminded him. Oh, no, Nebuchadnezzar.
- 29:17What you have is because of me. Thank God for the material
- 29:21blessings that he gives you. Number two.
- 29:23We're running out of time. Number to thank God for the
- 29:26people in your life. Very simple.
- 29:29Don't forget that, you are where you are because of the help of
- 29:33other people. There's a saying that that we
- 29:35always stand upon the shoulders of Greater. and then we I got a,
- 29:41I got a text recently, real small text.
- 29:44I won't name who it is. That might embarrass the person,
- 29:46but I got a text recently that simply said I am thankful for
- 29:50your friendship. Such a small statement.
- 29:55Such a small text, a simple text, but a mountain of
- 30:01encouragement. And we need to be thankful for
- 30:04the people that are in our lives.
- 30:06Do we let other people know that we appreciate them that we're
- 30:09thankful for them. You know how many relationships
- 30:11have been shattered and eventually just completely blown
- 30:15away because of the sin of ingratitude because we didn't
- 30:19let them know how appreciative we were of having them in our
- 30:23lives. Paul writes to the church at
- 30:26Philippi in Philippians 1 and verse 3, he told them I thank my
- 30:30God upon every remembrance of you.
- 30:33Can you imagine being one of the Christians and Philip I getting
- 30:36this letter from Paul while he's in prison and they open it up
- 30:39and they read it to the congregation.
- 30:41One of the first things that Paul says he says I think my God
- 30:43every time I think about you, I'm thankful for you in Acts 28,
- 30:48as Paul is on his way to Rome as he as he comes into Rome, a
- 30:53large crowd gathers to meet him there.
- 30:55Brothers and Sisters in Christ gather to meet him.
- 30:59People that he didn't even know and on seeing him acts 28 and
- 31:03verse 15 says on seeing them Paul thanked.
- 31:06God, and took courage. Paul was thankful for those
- 31:10people that he didn't even know. That we're in his life.
- 31:15We need to thank God for those people who touch our lives.
- 31:18And I think about the Ethiopian eunuch who Philip came and
- 31:21talked. And as he was baptized his sins
- 31:24were washed away. We're told that he went on his
- 31:27way rejoicing. Do you think that from time to
- 31:30time from then on to the end of the Ethiopian Unix life?
- 31:35Do you think every once in a while?
- 31:36He'd bring up this guy that he just met on the roadside.
- 31:39They taught him the gospel. How thankful.
- 31:40He was for that, man. I'm sure that he did number
- 31:44three. Thank God for even the difficult
- 31:47times. We've run out of time, and I'm
- 31:50not going to have time to go into all these.
- 31:53I was going to read you. I don't know how many of you are
- 31:54familiar with and I'll throw quotes around it, the poem
- 31:57because it doesn't really rhyme the poem.
- 31:59Prince or Footprints in the Sand.
- 32:01It's a beautiful story about this individual who they look
- 32:05back over their life and they see, two sets of footprints.
- 32:08One, is the Lord's and one is there.
- 32:09Then the person begins to complain that during difficult
- 32:12times of their life. They only saw one set of
- 32:14footprints as they looked back. And they asked the Lord, you
- 32:17know, why did you abandon me? And the Lord replies?
- 32:19Those Footprints were mine as I carried you for some I'm
- 32:24paraphrasing. You know, the difficult things
- 32:27that we face in life. There's a lot of them.
- 32:30I know that a lot of you are going through some of those
- 32:31difficult things in your life right now.
- 32:34I don't know what all of you are going through.
- 32:35But I do know this that even in the midst of hardships
- 32:39heartaches difficulties trials, we can thank God.
- 32:42We can thank God because we know he is there for us.
- 32:47We can thank God in times of Temptation because First
- 32:49Corinthians 10 and verse 13 tells us that God will supply.
- 32:52A way of Escape we can thank God in the midst of Trials because
- 32:56James one versus two. Three teaches us that they teach
- 32:59us patience. We need patience.
- 33:03We can thank In the storms of life.
- 33:05Because as Peter says in First Peter 1:6 through seven, it
- 33:08refines our faith, just as fire refines gold difficulties, makes
- 33:14our faith stronger and better and more refined we can thank
- 33:18God even in the midst of chastisement because Romans 12
- 33:21and verse 6 tells us that it is showing us, the love of God.
- 33:26Daniel and Daniel six when he's just learned about the law that
- 33:30has been signed, that is basically a death warrant for
- 33:33him. Self.
- 33:34What is the first thing that we see that he does?
- 33:36He goes to his room. He opens his windows towards
- 33:39Jerusalem and we read that he got down on his knees and he
- 33:42prayed giving God. Thanks.
- 33:46And the rest of the verse says, as he always had done in the
- 33:50good times, and even in the bad, Daniel Steel gave.
- 33:55Thanks 1st. Thessalonians, chapter 5 and
- 33:57verse 18 says in everything. Give thanks in everything give,
- 34:00thanks for. This is the will of God in
- 34:02Christ Jesus concerning. Serving you.
- 34:04I don't know what difficulties you face in life.
- 34:07I don't know what hardships and struggles that you that you all
- 34:10have going on, but I can tell you this right now.
- 34:11We can still be thankful. Jesus said in Matthew 11:28.
- 34:16Come to me all who labor and are heavy laden and I will give you
- 34:22rest. Take my yoke upon you, take my
- 34:25yoke upon you and learn from me for.
- 34:27I am gentle and lowly in heart and you will find rest for your
- 34:32souls. For my yoke is easy.
- 34:34Easy. And my burden is light.
- 34:36Now, that's in contrast to the burden and the yolk.
- 34:40That is in this world, what the world places upon us.
- 34:43It is heavy. And it is hard, and it is
- 34:45difficult. But Jesus says, come follow me
- 34:48and the burden, the small burden that you'll wear.
- 34:51As you follow me compared to what you're going to face alone
- 34:55without God in the world. My burden is light and my yoke
- 34:59is easy. Thank God, even for the
- 35:02difficulties in life and Only this morning and probably the
- 35:06most obvious. Let's thank God for the
- 35:09Salvation that we have in Jesus Christ.
- 35:13We should never let a day go by where we're not somehow reminded
- 35:17of the fact that Jesus Christ gave his life for our sins.
- 35:21We were able to remember it every first day of the week and
- 35:23we protect those emblems that represent his blood and his body
- 35:26but let's don't let Sundays. Let's don't let Thanksgiving day
- 35:29in November be the only times that we reminded of things that
- 35:32were to be thankful for Acts 4:12 tells us that salvation
- 35:37can't be found anywhere else except in the name of Jesus.
- 35:40Peter reminds us in John 6 and verse 6.
- 35:42Eight. That is it is only in Jesus that
- 35:45can be found the words of eternal life and Jesus tells us
- 35:50in John 14 and verse 6 that he is the way he is the truth, and
- 35:54he is the life. Let's be thankful for the
- 35:56Salvation that is found in Jesus Christ.
- 35:59Maybe you're here this morning and you're not a child of God.
- 36:02If you are not a child of God. I'm sad to tell you.
- 36:07But you don't have a whole lot to be thankful for you may be
- 36:09making millions of dollars. You may have all the friends in
- 36:11the world. You may have the fanciest cars
- 36:13and the biggest houses. But if you're outside of the
- 36:16body of Christ, if you're without the saving blood of
- 36:19Jesus, there can be no true happiness.
- 36:22We want to encourage you become a child of God, by repenting of
- 36:25your sins, confessing that Christ is Lord and be immersed
- 36:28by being immersed in water. So, those sins can be washed
- 36:30away. Maybe you already are a child of
- 36:32God. Maybe you have done as so many
- 36:35people do from time to time. Maybe you've taken for granted
- 36:38the blessings that you have in your life taking blessings for
- 36:42granted is a form of sin. Maybe you have sin in your life
- 36:46that you want the congregation here to know that your repenting
- 36:48of and you need encouragement. If we can help you in any way,
- 36:51please come, right now while we stand and sing.
