- 0:00Speaker 1: The Damapoda, Chapter one, the twin verses, All that we
- 0:07Speaker 1: are is the result of what we have thought. It
- 0:11Speaker 1: is founded on our thoughts. It is made up of
- 0:14Speaker 1: our thoughts. If a man speaks or acts with an
- 0:18Speaker 1: evil thought, pain follows him, as the wheel follows the
- 0:22Speaker 1: foot of the ox that draws the carriage. All that
- 0:27Speaker 1: we are is the result of what we have thought.
- 0:30Speaker 1: It is founded on our thoughts. It is made up
- 0:33Speaker 1: of our thoughts. If a man speaks or act with
- 0:37Speaker 1: a pure thought, happiness follows him like a shadow that
- 0:42Speaker 1: never leaves him. He abused me, He beat me, He
- 0:48Speaker 1: defeated me, he robbed me. In those who harbor such thoughts,
- 0:54Speaker 1: hatred will never cease. He abused me, he beat me,
- 1:00Speaker 1: he defeated me, he robbed me. In those who do
- 1:05Speaker 1: not harbor such thoughts, hatred will cease. For hatred does
- 1:11Speaker 1: not cease by hatred. At any time, hatred ceases by love.
- 1:17Speaker 1: This is an old rule. The world does not know
- 1:23Speaker 1: that we must all come to an end here, But
- 1:26Speaker 1: those who know it, their quarrels cease at once. He
- 1:32Speaker 1: who lives looking for pleasures only his senses uncontrolled, immoderate
- 1:38Speaker 1: in his food, idle and weak Marah, the tempter will
- 1:43Speaker 1: certainly overthrow him as the wind throws down a weak tree.
- 1:50Speaker 1: He who lives without looking for pleasures, his senses well controlled,
- 1:56Speaker 1: moderate in his food, faithful, and strong him Mara will
- 2:02Speaker 1: certainly not overthrow any more than the wind throws down
- 2:06Speaker 1: a rocky mountain. He who wishes to put on the
- 2:11Speaker 1: yellow dress without having cleansed himself from sin, who disregards
- 2:17Speaker 1: also temperance and truth, is unworthy of the yellow dress.
- 2:24Speaker 1: But he who has cleansed himself from sin, is well
- 2:27Speaker 1: grounded in all virtues, and regards also temperance and truth,
- 2:34Speaker 1: he is indeed worthy of the yellow dress. They who
- 2:39Speaker 1: imagine truth in untruth and see untruth in truth, never
- 2:45Speaker 1: arrive at truth, but follow vain desires. They who know
- 2:52Speaker 1: truth in truth and untruth in untruth, arrive at truth
- 2:58Speaker 1: and follow true desire. As rain breaks through an ill
- 3:05Speaker 1: thatched house, passion will break through an unreflecting mind. As
- 3:12Speaker 1: rain does not break through a well thatched house, passion
- 3:16Speaker 1: will not break through a well reflecting mind. The evildoer
- 3:23Speaker 1: mourns in this world, and he mourns in the next.
- 3:27Speaker 1: He mourns in both. He mourns and suffers when he
- 3:32Speaker 1: sees the evil of his own work. The virtuous man
- 3:37Speaker 1: delights in this world, and he delights in the next.
- 3:41Speaker 1: He delights in both. He delights and rejoices when he
- 3:47Speaker 1: sees the purity of his own work. The evil doer
- 3:53Speaker 1: suffers in this world, and he suffers in the next.
- 3:57Speaker 1: He suffers in both. He suffers when he thinks of
- 4:01Speaker 1: the evil he has done. He suffers more when going
- 4:05Speaker 1: on the evil path. The virtuous man is happy in
- 4:10Speaker 1: this world, and he is happy in the next. He
- 4:14Speaker 1: is happy in both. He is happy when he thinks
- 4:18Speaker 1: of the good he has done. He is still more
- 4:21Speaker 1: happy when going on the good path. The thoughtless man,
- 4:27Speaker 1: even if he can recite a large portion of the law,
- 4:31Speaker 1: but is not a doer of it, has no share
- 4:34Speaker 1: in the priesthood, but is like a cowherd counting the
- 4:38Speaker 1: cows of others. The follower of the law, even if
- 4:44Speaker 1: he can recite only a small portion of the law,
- 4:48Speaker 1: but having forsaken passion and hatred and foolishness, possesses true
- 4:55Speaker 1: knowledge and serenity of mind. He, caring for nothing thing
- 5:00Speaker 1: in this world or that to come, has indeed a
- 5:04Speaker 1: share in the priesthood, end of Chapter one,
